Cimetidine 1 g daily is often continued for a fixed period beyond the time of healing of duodenal ulcer on the assumption that it might reduce the subsequent relapse rate. To test this, 194 patients whose ulcers had healed after one month of cimetidine 1 g daily were allocated at random to three groups for further treatment with cimetidine 1 g daily for two months (n = 63) or five months (n = 66) or placebo (n = 65). Thereafter all patients received placebo. Endoscopy was done routinely every three months, or earlier if symptoms recurred. During follow-up in the placebo phase, which lasted for up to 25 months, the estimated total proportions of patients in the three groups with symptomatic recurrences of ulcer were 80%, 90%, and 77%, respectively; the corresponding proportions with silent plus symptomatic relapses were 92%, 90%, and 100%. The relapse rates were also similar in all three groups. Statistical analysis showed a significant variation in relapse rate but the differences were regarded as clinically unimportant. These findings show that full-dose cimetidine continued for several months beyond the time of healing of duodenal ulcer dose not decrease the risk of subsequent relapse.  相似文献

Many organisms respond to the heterogeneity of abiotic environmental conditions by plastic modifications of their phenotypes (acclimation or acclimatization). Despite considerable research efforts in this area, the beneficial (adaptive) effect of acclimation or acclimatization is still debated. We examined whether the development of newt larvae (Ichthyosaura alpestris) under different natural light and thermal conditions subsequently altered their susceptibility to predation in sun‐exposed versus shaded tanks in nature. During predation trials in various light and temperature conditions, newt larvae that developed in sun‐exposed warmer tanks consistently suffered from higher predation by dragonfly nymphs (Aeshna cyanea) compared to larvae from shaded or colder tanks. We conclude that higher sun exposure during embryonic and larval development negatively affects antipredator performance even in sun‐exposed tanks: this result is inconsistent with the beneficial acclimation hypothesis. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ●● , ●●–●●.  相似文献

The present study was aimed to test the hypothesis that increased endogenous CCK may interact with the anorectic serotonergic agent dl-fenfluramine to reduce food intake in rats. Previous studies, using selective CCK receptor antagonists, could demonstrate CCK-dependent 5-HT-induced anorexia. In the present approach, we used protease inhibitors to increase levels of endogenous CCK instead of blocking CCK receptors by antagonists. The protease inhibitors we used were soybean trypsin inhibitor (STI) and camostate. We hypothesized that combining the anorectic serotonergic drug dl-fenfluramine with either STI or camostate should result in an enhanced hypophagic effect when compared to single drug treatment. All feeding experiments were performed in non-deprived rats during night time feeding. Given alone, STI (500 mg/kg, po), camostate (200 mg/kg po) and also fenfluramine (1–9 mg/kg ip) reduced significantly food intake, with a more pronounced effect following fenfluramine. However, the experiments do not provide evidence for any additive or synergistic action between camostate or STI and the anorectic serotonergic drug dl-fenfluramine on food intake.  相似文献

A significant proportion of ewes mated in spring do not lamb because they return to anoestrus before conception. In a flock of 661 artificially inseminated Merino ewes, PMSG, the “ram effect” and progestagens were used to stimulate ovulation and oestrus in non-pregnant ewes. Injection of PMSG increased the proportion of non-pregnant ewes returning to oestrus from 56% to 82% (P < 0.001). Progestagen priming increased the proportion of ewes in the flock that lambed from 34% to 45% (P < 0.01). These two findings suggest ways by which the reproductive performance of ewes mated in spring could be improved.  相似文献

After evidencing the great importance of plants for animals and humans in consequence of the photosynthesis, several considerations on plant evolution are made. One of the peculiar characteristics of the plant is the sessile property, due especially to the cell wall. This factor, principally, strengthened by the photosynthetic process, determined the particular developmental pattern of the plant, which is characterized by the continuous formation of new organs. The plant immobility, although negative for its survival, has been, in great part, overcome by the acquisition of the capacity of adaptation (plasticity) to the environmental stresses and changes, and the establishment of more adapted genotypes. This capacity to react to the external signals induced Trewavas to speak of "plant intelligence". The plant movement incapacity and the evolution of the sexual reproduction system were strongly correlated. In this context, the evolution of the flower in the Angiosperms has been particularly important to allow the male gamete to fertilize the immobile female gamete. Moreover, the formation of fruit and seed greatly improved the dispersal and conservation of the progeny in the environment. With the flower, mechanisms to favour the outcrossing among different individuals appeared, which are essential to increase the genetic variability and, then, the plant evolution itself. Although the Angiosperms seem highly evolved, the plant evolution is not surely finished, because many reported morpho-physiological processes may be still considered susceptible of further improvement. In the last years the relationships among humans, plants and environment are becoming closer and closer. This is due to the use of the DNA recombinant techniques with the aim to modify artificially plant characters. Therefore, the risk of a plant evolution strongly directed towards practical or commercial objectives, or "an artificial evolution", may be hypothesized.  相似文献

Our results show that experimental evolution mimics evolution in nature. In particular, only 1000 generations of periodic recombination with immigrant genotypes is enough for linkage disequilibrium values in experimental populations to change from a maximum linkage value to a value similar to the one observed in wild strains of E. coli. Our analysis suggests an analogy between the recombination experiment and the evolutionary history of E. coli; the E. coligenome is a patchwork of genes laterally inserted in a common backbone, and the experimental E. coli chromosome is a patchwork where some sites are highly prone to recombination and others are very clonal. In addition, we propose a population model for wild E. coli where gene flow (recombination and migration) are an important source of genetic variation, and where certain hosts act as selective sieves; i.e., the host digestive system allows only certain strains to adhere and prosper as resident strains generating a particular microbiota in each host. Therefore we suggest that the strains from a wide range of wild hosts from different regions of the world may present an ecotypic structure where adaptation to the host may play an important role in the population structure. Traditional agro-pastoral practices are in decline over much of the Alps, resulting in the complete elimination of livestock grazing in some areas. Natural reforestation following pastoral abandonment may represent a significant threat to alpine biodiversity, especially that associated with open habitats. This study presents the first assessment of the potential effects of natural reforestation on dung beetles by exploring the relationships between the beetle community (abundance, diversity, species turnover and assemblage structure) and the vegetation stages of ecological succession following pastoral abandonment. A hierarchical sampling design was used in the montane belt of the Sessera Valley (north-western Italian Alps). Dung beetles were sampled across 16 sampling sites set in four habitat types corresponding to four different successional stages (pasture, shrub, pioneer forest and beech forest) at two altitudinal levels. The two habitats at the extremes of the ecological succession, i.e. pasture and beech forest, had the greatest effect on the structure of local dung beetle assemblages. Overall, dung beetle abundance was greater in beech forest, whereas species richness, Shannon diversity and taxonomic diversity were significantly higher in pasture, hence suggesting this latter habitat can be considered as a key conservation habitat. Forests and pastures shared a lower number of species than the other pairs of habitats (i.e. species turnover between these two habitats was the highest). The two intermediate seral stages, i.e. shrub and pioneer forest, showed low dung beetle abundance and diversity values. Local dung beetle assemblages were also dependent on season and altitude; early-arriving species were typical of pastures of high elevation, whereas late-arriving species were typical of beech forests. It is likely that grazing in the Alps will continue to decrease in the future leading to replacement of open habitats by forest. This study suggests therefore that, at least in the montane belt, reforestation may have potentially profound and negative effects on dung beetle diversity. Maintaining traditional pastoral activities appears to be the most promising approach to preserve open habitats and adjacent beech forests, resulting in the conservation of species of both habitats.  相似文献

Conservation biological control aims to enhance the efficacy of biological control agents, such as predators and parasitoids, by providing them access to key requisites, for example floral or other alternative food resources. However, the occurrence of floral resources in agricultural systems may have positive effects not only on natural enemies but also on the pests themselves. For this reason, we have studied in laboratory common Mediterranean plants as potential food resources for an important lepidopteran olive pest, the olive moth, Prays oleae. The effects of 15 wild flowering plants from olive grove ecosystems, and four sugars present in floral nectars, on key biological parameters of P. oleae (i.e. longevity, pre-oviposition and oviposition periods, fertility and fecundity) were evaluated. The three pest generations were analysed. Only few of the plants tested increased some reproductive parameters of the insect individuals compared to the water-fed controls, while sugars generally improved them. This could be due to a higher concentration of sugars provided by individual sugars than by flower nectar. These results indicate that, in general, P. oleae will not benefit from the availability of the floral resources tested.  相似文献

Loss of natural wetlands is a global phenomenon that has been a serious threat to the wildlife. A common practice is to construct artificial wetlands to compensate for the loss of natural wetlands. To test whether artificial wetlands as habitats for waterbirds are good alternatives to natural wetlands, we compared species richness, abundance, and seasonal dynamics of waterbird communities of natural (here tidelands) and artificial wetlands (here aquacultural ponds) on Chongming Island, China. Our results indicate that habitat preference of waterbirds showed seasonal difference: most of the shorebirds were found on tidelands in spring, whereas most of the natatorial birds were recorded in aquacultural ponds in winter. Waterbirds preferred the tidelands rather than aquacultural ponds in both spring and autumn, whereas they showed no preference for either the tidelands or the ponds in summer and winter. It is concluded that natural wetlands are better habitats for waterbirds than artificial wetlands on Chongming Island, while the artificial ones are also suitable habitats for waterbirds in winter. The waterbirds might use artificial wetlands only when natural wetlands are unavailable or of poor quality. An over-emphasis that artificial wetlands are suitable habitats for waterbirds might encourage land managers to convert natural wetlands into the artificial ones, resulting in considerable loss of bird diversity. Therefore, for the purpose of bird conservation, it would be a better practice to conserve natural wetlands rather than to construct artificial ones after destruction of natural wetlands.  相似文献

The Challenge Hypothesis postulates that male vertebrates can respond to social challenges, such as simulated territorial intrusions, by rapidly increasing their concentrations of plasma androgens, such as testosterone (T). This increase may facilitate the expression of aggressive behavior and lead to persistence of this behavior even after withdrawal of the challenge, thus potentially promoting territoriality and the probability of winning future challenges. The scope of the Challenge Hypothesis was tested by exposing free-ranging male Cassin's Sparrows, Peucaea cassinii, to conspecific song playback (SPB) at the beginning of the vernal nesting season. Exposure to SPB stimulated aggressive behavior but did not influence plasma T. Furthermore, plasma T did not correlate with the duration of exposure to SPB, and the behavioral response to SPB did not differ in males that were challenged a second time shortly after the first challenge. As birds were investigated at a stage of their reproductive cycle when plasma T is presumably seasonally high due to photostimulation, the lack of hormonal response to SPB may have been due to the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis secreting hormones at maximum rates. This was not the case, however, because administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone I rapidly stimulated the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and T, and treatment with ovine LH rapidly stimulated T secretion.  相似文献

Around 60% of pheasants released for shooting in the UK, an estimated 21 million birds, do not end up at their intended fate: being shot. This constitutes wastage, raising economic, environmental and ethical questions. We review what is known of the fates of released pheasants and consider why they do not directly contribute to the numbers harvested. We focus on four main explanations: predation, disease, starvation and dispersal, and highlight other important causes of mortality. For each explanation, we attempt to attribute levels of loss and identify timings or conditions when such losses may be heaviest. We review factors that exacerbate losses and methods available to mitigate them. Opportunities for amelioration may arise at all stages of the rearing and release of pheasants and involve changes to the conditions under which eggs are produced, the way young pheasants are reared or the management of the environment into which they are released. We found few studies investigating impacts of post-release management techniques on pheasant survival outside of the breeding season within a UK context. We found that a number of less commonly deployed practices focusing on early-life, pre-release management may improve survival. Given the scale of pheasant releasing in the UK, even improvements in survival of 1% would mean that ~?350,000 fewer birds die of natural causes. Complementing current post-release management with proven novel pre-release management interventions could reduce the number of pheasants required for release, whilst maintaining current shooting levels. Lowering release numbers would lower financial costs, benefit the environment and reduce some ethical concerns over the release and shooting of reared pheasants.  相似文献

A provisioned chimpanzee group in the Mahale Mountains was observed. The characteristic feature of chimpanzee behavior is that many types of behavior occur at one time as a bout of interactions. This can be seen in the booming situation in the wild. Similar situations were observed at the artificial feeding place. The behavior of the initiators of the interactions differed according to age, sex and social status. The chimpanzees' behavior was studied as a system. The relationships between each behavior pattern were investigated by analysis of the sequential behaviors of the same individual, and that of chains of signal-response behaviors, as well as that of behaviors which appeared when a third individual joined the initial interaction. Appeasement behaviors were more flexible, while others were more stereotyped. Part of the appeasement behavior resembled begging behavior. Appeasement behavior is thought to have a rather new phylogenetic origin. It is suggested that the various chimpanzee behaviors have evolved as a harmonious system which can be observed in the booming situation. The origin of chimpanzee society based on the evolution of their behavior system is discussed. Analysis of triplet interactions indicated that the types of triplet interaction in chimpanzees are quite different from those of multiple male group species such as macaques and baboons.  相似文献

The biota of the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea has experienced dramatic changes in the last decades, in part as a result of the massive invasion of Red Sea species. The mechanism generally hypothesized for the 'Red-to-Med' invasion is that of natural dispersal through the Suez Canal. To date, however, this hypothesis has not been tested. This study examines the mode of invasion, using as a model the mussel Brachidontes pharaonis, an acclaimed 'Lessepsian migrant' that thrives along the eastern Mediterranean coast. Our findings reveal two distinct lineages of haplotypes, and five possible explanations are discussed for this observation. We show that the genetic exchange among the Mediterranean, Gulf of Suez and the northern Red Sea is sufficiently large to counteract the build up of sequential genetic structure. Nevertheless, these basins are rich in unique haplotypes of unknown origin. We propose that it is historic secondary contact, an ongoing anthropogenic transport or both processes, that participate in driving the population dynamics of B. pharaonis in the Mediterranean and northern Red Sea.  相似文献

In vertebrate somatic cells, the centrosome functions as the major microtubule-organizing center (MTOC), which splits and separates to form the poles of the mitotic spindle. However, the role of the centriole-containing centrosome in the formation of bipolar mitotic spindles continues to be controversial. Cells normally containing centrosomes are still able to build bipolar spindles after their centrioles have been removed or ablated. In naturally occurring cellular systems that lack centrioles, such as plant cells and many oocytes, bipolar spindles form in the complete absence of canonical centrosomes. These observations have led to the notion that centrosomes play no role during mitosis. However, recent work has re-examined spindle assembly in the absence of centrosomes, both in cells that naturally lack them and those that have had them experimentally removed. The results of these studies suggest that an appreciation of microtubule network organization, both before and after nuclear envelope breakdown (NEB), is the key to understanding the mechanisms that regulate spindle assembly and the generation of bipolarity.Key words: centrosome, centriole, mitosis, spindle, cell cycle, meiosis, plant cell, microsurgery  相似文献

Emission spectra of the photolabile Ca2+ chelators DM-nitrophen, nitr-5, and diazo-2 were studied alone, and in the presence of indo-1, to investigate potential interactions that would make the simultaneous manipulation and ratiometric measurement of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration difficult. Neither diazo-2 nor its photoproduct were found to be significantly fluorescent, and consequently concentrations of diazo-2 up to 20 times that of indo-1 did not distort the emission spectra of indo-1. DM-nitrophen was scarcely fluorescent, but its fluorescence did increase upon photolysis. In contrast to diazo-2 and DM-nitrophen, nitr-5 itself was found to be quite fluorescent, and this fluorescence was significantly increased upon photolysis. Thus, combined use of nitr-5 and indo-1 poses the most difficulty. The emission spectra of all the investigated compounds were used to define experimental conditions and calibration procedures that make possible simultaneous measurement and manipulation of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration.  相似文献
