The mean predation rate per day and the effect of the prey on the development and survival of the various nymphal stages ofPodisus maculiventris (Say) were studied under field-cage conditions. Third instar larvae of the Colorado potato beetleLeptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) and the large white butterflyPieris brassicae (Linnaeus) were used as the prey.
The results show that under climatic conditions similar to those occurring in the Thessaloniki region (N. Greece), the 5th instar nymphs and the adults of the predatorP. maculiventris would be promising agents for the biological control of larvae ofL. decemlineata andP. brassicae.

Searching behavior of the predaceous insect Podisus maculiventris (Say) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was investigated in the laboratory to verify assumptions made in a predator search model. Female predators were placed into an arena containing 30 lima bean plants (Phaseolus lunatus L.), each having five numbered leaflets. Prey were third-instar larvae of Mexican bean beetle (Epilachna varivestis Mulsant) at two densities. Predators were observed for 4 h periods as they searched the plant canopy. Results showed that predators searched a greater area and for longer at low prey density than at high prey density. Predators apparently searched plants without using cues, did not search areas of the canopy repeatedly after attacks, and spent approximately 1 h handling prey. Predators spent more time resting than searching, and attack rates were negatively correlated with rest time, but were not correlated with search time. Long resting periods by predators may be a result of energy conservation. The implications for using predators such as P. maculiventris against pests in crops are (i) the predators' searching behavior limits the number of prey attacked, and (ii) the predator may be able to persist at low prey densities better than species with different searching behaviors.

Spined soldier bugs, Podisus maculiventris, are heteropteran insects that feed voraciously on other insects, particular the soft bodied larval forms of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera. The response of P. maculiventris Malpighian tubules (MTs) to serotonin and known diuretic and antidiuretic peptides has been investigated, and is compared with that of MT from the hematophagous and phytophagous heteropteran bugs Rhodnius prolixus and Acrosternum hilare, respectively. A CRF-related peptide diuretic hormone (DH) from the termite Zootermopsis nevadensis (Zoone-DH) stimulated MT secretion, which was reversed by a member of the CAP2b family of peptides from A. hilare (Acrhi-CAP2b-2), an antidiuretic effect. Serotonin had no effect on secretion, neither did a representative calcitonin-like DH, kinin, tachykinin-related peptide, and an antidiuretic factor from the mealworm Tenebrio molitor (Tenmo-ADFb) in both P. maculiventris or A. hilare. Serotonin is a DH in R. prolixus, and its lack of effect on MT from P. maculiventris and A. hilare suggests this is an adaptation to hematophagy. On the other hand, the antidiuretic activity of members of the CAP2b family in all three bugs is consistent with this being a heteropteran feature rather than a specialism for hematophagy.

In vitro rearing of the egg parasitoidTrissolcus basalis (WOLL.) from eggs collected on the natural hostNezara viridula (L.) was initiated. Several oligidic diets containing insect material (Manduca sexta hemolymph or host egg content) were tested. Our initial medium with 50% hemolymph induced a high egg mortality, but by decreasing the hemolymph concentration, increasing the hen egg yolk concentration and adding 15% of free amino acids mixture, a hatching rate of 85% of the parasitoid eggs was obtained with 39% reaching the second instar and 33% the third instar. In a medium without hemolymph, but with 18% liquid from parasitized host eggs we obtained 90% to 100% hatching, 25 to 27% reaching the second instar and 8% the third instar. We did not obtain pupation from eggsin vitro, but did get pupae and adults from larvae rearedin vivo to second instar and transfered to anin vitro system.

Comparison of prey consumption by Dicyphus tamaninii reared conventionally, and on a meat-based diet
The zoophytophagous predator Dicyphustamaninii Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) hasbeen successfully reared for more than fivegenerations on a meat-based diet, and in theabsence of a plant as a substrate foroviposition and feeding. We compared thepredation efficiency of D. tamaniniiproduced on this diet with those rearedconventionally on Ephestia kuehniellaeggs (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) andtobacco plants. Their performances wereevaluated on two prey, the greenhouse whiteflyTrialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood(Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) and the cotton aphidAphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae). Their tendency to cannibalisticbehaviour was also evaluated.Nymphs of D. tamaninii produced on themeat diet consumed a similar number ofgreenhouse whitefly pupae after 24 and 48 hoursto nymphs reared by the conventional method.Diet-reared females consumed significantly morewhitefly pupae after 24 and 48 hours thancontrol females. When the cotton aphid wasoffered, diet-reared D. tamaninii nymphsand females consumed similar numbers of prey tocontrol D. tamaninii. There was nosignificant increase in cannibalistic behaviourof diet-reared D. tamaninii after 3 and 5days of interaction. These results show that, after fivegenerations, the predation efficiency and thetendency to cannibalism of meat-reared D.tamaninii is similar to that ofconventionally-reared individuals.

A technique for rearingAnaphes sordidatus (Girault) on eggs of laboratory-reared carrot weevil,Listronotus oregonensis (Le Conte), is described. Individual rearing was possible by using polyethylene embedding capsules that enabled easy manipulation
of parasitized carrot weevil eggs for use in subsequent experimental procedures. The technique described resulted in 65% parasitization
of carrot weevil eggs and 90 mn per day were sufficient to obtainca. 200 parasites daily.

In vitro rearing of the aphid endoparasitoidLysiphlebus fabarum (Marshall) (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) was attempted. Successful permanent cultures ofAphis fabae Sc. andMyzus persicae Sulz. cells were not obtained. Therefore, parasitoid larvae were reared in 2 unnatural media rone of which included cells
ofCeratitis capitata Wied. (Diptera, Trypetidae). A group of larvae was reared in a substrate to which parasitoid teratocytes had been added. SinceLysiphlebus fabarum females did not oviposit into paraffin droplets including the substrates, the larvae were directly transferred from parasitized
aphids into the rearing media. Several larvae reached the final instar, but only 2 out of the 48 tested in the 3 substrates
became adults. The meaning of teratocytes inin vitro rearing of Aphidiine, Braconids is discussed.

Summary The tenets of optimal foraging theory are used to contrast the behavior of the predatory snail Acantina spirata when feeding on the barnacles Balanus glandula and Chthamalus fissus under conditions of satiation and starvation. As predicted in optimal diet models, A. spirata is less selective (ratio of attack frequency on a prey species to number of individuals available) when the higher ranking prey has low abundance. When given a choice, starved snails attack both barnacle species equally, whereas satiated individuals preferentially attack B. glandula, the more profitable prey (ash-free dry weight of barnacles ingested per unit handling time). Under starvation conditions, equal attack frequency does not result in equal prey species consumption because Acanthina spirata is more successful at attacking C. fissus than B. glandula. The assumption of constant prey encounter rates in optimal diet models is not met when A. spirata goes from a state of satiation to starvation. The encounter rate on B. glandula is lowered due to a decrease in attack success. A loss of feeding skills in starved A. spirata is responsible for the greater difficulty snails have in gaining access through the opercular plates of B. glandula.Behavioral changes in A. spirata as snails pass from satiation to hunger translate into an energetic disadvantage during feeding for hungry snails for two reasons. First, higher prey handling times result in a decreased rate of biomass intake. Second, alteration in the relative attack frequency between barnacle species, combined with a decrease in attack success on the more profitable prey leads to more frequent ingestion of the less profitable prey.

Interaction between Podisus maculiventris and Harmonia axyridis two predators used in augmentative biological control in greenhouse crops
Intraguild predation (IGP) betweenthe pentatomid Podisus maculiventris(Say) and the coccinellid Harmoniaaxyridis (Pallas) in the absence or presenceof the extraguild prey Spodopteralittoralis (Boisduval) and Myzuspersicae (Sulzer) was studied in thelaboratory. Interactions were asymmetric infavor of the pentatomid. Podisusmaculiventris readily fed upon eggs and larvaeof H. axyridis, but adult beetles wererarely attacked. Success of attacks by P.maculiventris was stage dependent, fourthinstars and adults being more successful inkilling ladybeetle larvae than second instars.Attacks by H. axyridis on the pentatomidwere rare and none of them were successful. Theeffect of introducing extraguild prey on thelevel of IGP was tested both in petri dishesand on caged sweet pepper plants. Whensufficient numbers of S. littoralislarvae were present to satiate the pentatomid, predation on H. axyridis larvae decreasedsignificantly, indicating that the coccinellidis a less preferred or less vulnerable prey. When the aphid M. persicae was presentedas extraguild prey, levels of IGP were notaltered. Nymphs of P. maculiventrissuccessfully completed development whenexclusively fed on larvae of H. axyridis, but developmental time was longer than onlepidopteran prey. No pentatomid nymphs reachedadulthood on aphids alone. IGP by P.maculiventris on H. axyridis may be ofsome importance in greenhouse crops, where bothpredators are being used increasingly inaugmentative biological control programs.Nonetheless, it is expected that in practicelarger larvae and adults of H. axyridiswill escape most attacks by the pentatomid.

Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major pest of maize and sorghum in many countries of tropical Africa. Hitherto, research
on this important pest has been hampered by the occurrence of a six-month long diapause in the last larval stage and the lack
of an artificial diet for rearing the insect in the laboratory. Incorporating 4 to 8-week-old sorghum powder in a nutritionally
adequate diet and rearing larvae individually in vials at ambient laboratory conditions (25–30°C, 50–80% r.h., and L12: D12)
have made it possible to rear 15 successive non-diapausing generations ofB. fusca capable of producing between 35 to 40 healthy pupae/litre of diet and upto 70% pupation without loss of vigour or reproductive
capacity. Five to six generations were completed per year and the overall mean developmental period (egg-egg) was 68 days
(egg 6, larval 45, pre-pupal 1, pupal 14 and pre-oviposition 2 days). Larval period lasted 70 days in the first generation
compared to 32.3 days in the fifteenth generation. Average fecundity increased from 158.0 to 394.6 eggs per female with a
concomitant increase of egg hatch from 44.8 to 79.6% in the first and fifteenth generation, respectively.

The phytoseiid miteAmblyseius barkeri (Hughes) (=Amblyseius mckenziei Sch. & Pr.) was used for biological control ofThrips tabaci Lind. in 7 commercial glasshouses with cucumber (a total of 5780 m2). Predatory mites were introduced 3–4 times in densities ranging from 40 to 300/m2 at each release. In 6 of the 7 glasshouses, control of thrips was satisfactory throughout the growing season. Thrips densities
were kept below 15 individuals per leaf. In 1 glasshouse, thrips damage was seen on the fruits at densities of 25 thrips per
leaf, but the thrips population was quickly reduced and remained at low densities for the next 3 months.

The effects of five diets (larvae of Galleria mellonella L., larvae of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval), eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, cysts of Artemia franciscana Kellogg and an artificial diet based on bovine meat) on development, survival and reproduction of two predatory stinkbugs, Picromerus bidens L. and Podisus maculiventris (Say), were studied in the laboratory. Both species successfully completed immature development on the foods offered, except for P. bidens on cysts of A. franciscana. Significant effects of diet on developmental duration were found in both species. Total developmental time from second instar to adult ranged from 25.0 to 41.5 days and from 18.7 to 46.0 days in P. bidens and P. maculiventris, respectively. Nymphal survival of P. maculiventris was superior to that of P. bidens on all diets tested. Nymphal survival of P. maculiventris was greater than 92% on all diets except on A. franciscana cysts, yielding only 50% survival to adulthood. Survival of P. bidens fed on eggs of E. kuehniella was higher than that of conspecifics fed on caterpillar prey or artificial diet (89% on flour moth eggs vs. 68 and 80% on G. mellonella and S. littoralis and only 50% on meat diet). Fresh weight of newly emerged females of both pentatomids was affected by the diet offered to the predators during their nymphal stage. Females of P. maculiventris produced viable eggs on all diets except on cysts of A. franciscana and had mean fecundities of 691, 436, 608 and 344 eggs per female on S. littoralis, G. mellonella, E. kuehniella eggs and the meat diet, respectively. Females of P. bidens laid eggs only on live prey with mean fecundities of 94 and 38 eggs per female on S. littoralis and G. mellonella, respectively. The results indicate a lower nutritional plasticity of P. bidens as compared with P. maculiventris. An erratum to this article can be found at 相似文献

Biological control offers potentially effective suppression of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella, a serious pest of Brassica crops. Little is known of whether multiple natural enemies have additive, antagonistic, or synergistic effects on DBM populations. No-choice and choice tests were conducted to assess predation by Podisus maculiventris on DBM larvae parasitized by Cotesia plutellae and unparasitized larvae. In no-choice tests, P. maculiventris preyed on greater numbers of parasitized than unparasitized larvae and greater numbers of young larvae than old larvae. In choice tests with early third instar DBM, there was no difference in predation between parasitized or unparasitized larvae. However, in choice tests with older prey, P. maculiventris preyed on more parasitized than unparasitized larvae. Two field studies were conducted to test if this predator and parasitoid have additive, antagonistic or synergistic effects on DBM populations and plant damage in cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata). In 2002, DBM populations were significantly lower in the presence of C. plutellae but not in the presence of P. maculiventris. There was not a significant interaction between the natural enemies. Plant damage was reduced only with C. plutellae. In 2003, DBM populations were significantly lower in the presence of C. plutellae and P. maculiventris, although the combination of natural enemies did not lead to a non-additive interaction. Plant damage was unaffected by the presence of either natural enemy. Because of its greater predation on parasitized larvae, P. maculiventris could be an intraguild predator of C. plutellae. Yet, their overall combined effect in the field was additive rather than antagonistic.

Laboratory studies revealed that the acarid mite,Tyrophagus casei Oudemans is an adequate diet for development and reproduction of the stigmaeid mite,Agistemus exsertus Gonzalez. A combination of pollen grains of castor beanRicinus communis L. andT. casei is a sufficient plant-animal diet for the development and reproduction of the phytoseiid mite,Amblyseius gossipi Elbadry. When the later predator was restricted to such animal prey it developed to the adult stage, but females failed to lay eggs.

An experimental ‘closed’ rearing system, where egg and larval manipulations were eliminated, was developed for the in vitro rearing of Catolaccus grandis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) Burks, an important ectoparasitoid of the cotton boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis Boheman. In this rearing model, n-hexane (a synthetic ovipositional stimulant for this parasitoid), was smeared on the Parafilm® cover of a modified rearing chamber (a Multiwell®) tissue culture plate) to induce the deposition of uncontaminated eggs, on the inner side of this waxy membrane, and on or around an agar retained diet that had been dispensed into the individual chamber wells. When the efficiency of the in vitro rearing system was compared to the current in vivo rearing method for this species, the duration of the life cycle was significantly shorter in parasitoids reared in vivo, but this difference was less than one day (17.8 vs 17.1 days, respectively). On the other hand, the number of eggs laid in the in vitro rearing chamber during a 4 h period was c. 2.5 times greater than in the conventional in vivo rearing apparatus, and adult yields were c. 25% greater when using the in vitro closed rearing method. Male to female ratios were c. 1:9 when reared in vitro as compared to 1.0:1.5 for those reared in vivo. There were no apparent adverse effects of this in vitro rearing system on the parasitoid's general behavior and reproduction after two consecutive generations.

Clerid beetles are common natural enemies of bark beetles, and could potentially be used as biological control agents if they could be reared in sufficient numbers. We developed an artificial diet devoid of insect components for rearing Thanasimus dubius (Fabricius), a clerid that attacks several economically important bark beetles in eastern North America. We reared larvae of this predator using the artificial diet, and then used either natural or factitious prey to feed the adults so produced. Two different methods of presenting the diet were also examined. We then compared the performance of T. dubius reared on the artificial diet with newly-emerged wild individuals collected from the field. Our results suggest that adult predators reared on the diet are near in quality to wild ones, and high R0 values can be obtained. No difference in prey preference was found between wild and diet-reared individuals after five generations in the laboratory. Sufficient numbers of predators could be generated using these techniques to permit limited field trials of augmentative biological control.

Argyrophylax basifulva (Bezzi) (Tachinidae) has proved to be an effective parasitoid in the control of Greater Coconut Spike Moth (Tirathaba complexa Butler) in Fiji. However, its use elsewhere has been hampered by difficulties in its mass rearing, particularly in obtaining matings. Techniques for rearing the fly that overcome these problems are given in this publication.

Artificial and modified natural hosts were exposed to females of the gypsy moth [Lymantria dispar (L.)] hyperparasite,Eurytoma appendigaster (Swederus), to investigate its host recognition behavior on the primary host, which are cocooned larvae of the gypsy moth parasite,Cotesia melanoscela (Ratzeburg). Material(s) which caused drilling behavior by the hyperparasite on host cocoons were extracted with both polar and non-polar solvents. However, cocoons washed with large volumes of solvent still caused substantial drilling activities by females, suggesting that additional cues may be important. Results suggest that host recognition in this hyperparasite involves a variety of host characteristics.

In an effort to suppress the tuliptree aphidIllinoia liriodendri (Monell), approximately 2,000 eggs ofChrysoperla carnea (Stephens) from a commercial insectary were released 4 times on each of 8 tuliptreesLiriodendron tulipifera L. in Berkeley, California, during the spring of 1984.
On trees foraged by the Argentine antIridomyrmex humilis (Mayr), 98% of the eggs ofC. carnea were removed from the egg release tapes by the ants. A total of about 1,250 larvae per tree eclosed from the 8,000 eggs released
on each tree without ants. Fifty percent of the larvae that did eclose died due to cannibalism or entrapment in the sticky
egg release tapes and approximately 625 first instar larvae on each tree were free to forage for aphids.
Inundative lacewing releases ofC. carnea did not suppress populations ofI. liriodendri due to ant predation, the low viability of commercial eggs (0–73% eclosion),
