Cells of Spiniferomonas bourrellyi Takahashi have been shown to possess a chloroplast. A procedure for examining the same cells by both light and electron microscopy was developed so that the structure of silica scales (which is diagnostic for the species) could be confirmed for cells clearly possessing chloroplasts. A previously published proposal invalidated the genus Spiniferomonas because the type species ( S. bourrellyi ) was found to be colourless and the new genus Chromophysomonas was erected to include all remaining pigmented species of Spiniferomonas . The findings reported here support reinstatement of S. blurrily as the validated type of the genus; Chromophysomonas is considered a redundant synonym.  相似文献

The genus Synura was found to be an important member of the phytoplankton communities in many Connecticut lakes, present in more than fifty percent of the 113 collections made during 1984. Thirteen taxa, including a new forma, Synura petersenii f. truttae , were recorded for the first time in Connecticut waters using SEM. S. petersenii was the most important species, present in forty-one percent of the samples. Evidence for denoting S. petersenii var. glabra as a form, instead of a variety, is presented. Ecological preferences for some species are discussed.  相似文献

The wood-feeding cockroaches of the genus Cryptocercus occur in temperate forests. Of the seven known species, five occur in the United States and two in Eurasia. Until 1997, all populations in the United States were considered a single species. Populations in the western United States were elevated to a species status based on variation in DNA sequence and morphology. In 1999, three new species were described from the eastern United States based on variation in chromosome number and mitochondrial DNA, bringing the number of species in the United States to five. The objective of this study was to determine if the DNA sequence of nuclear rRNA also signals the existence of four species in the eastern United States and to compare the inferred relationships with those proposed based on mitochondrial sequences. We obtained the DNA sequence from a portion of the 5.8S and 28S rRNA genes and the entire ITS2 region from 38 individuals and 30 additional clones to assess intraindividual, intraspecific, and interspecific variation. We found extensive sequence variation among the various species and little or no intraindividual and intraspecific variation. Phylogenetic analysis indicated the existence of monophyletic lineages among the eastern United States samples, which largely corresponded to the four species previously described. The inferred relationships were well-supported by bootstrap analysis and decay indices. Although the nuclear rRNA sequences resulted in a coherent phylogenetic tree, the ITS2 region contained many insertions and deletions, which may introduce homoplasy and ambiguity in alignment as more taxa are added to the data set.  相似文献

Siver, P. A. & Skogstad, A. 1988. Morphological variation and ecology of Mallomonas crassisquama (Chrysophyceae). - Nord. J. Bot. 7: 99–107. Copenhagen. ISSN 0107–055X.
Mallomonas crassisquama is one of the most common and widely distributed species of Mallomonas . In this study we compare the morphology and ecology of the species based on 309 collections from 67 localities in Connecticut (U.S.A.) and Norway. The taxon produces a very complex siliceous coat consisting of four scale and two bristle types all of which have considerable structural variation. A new variety, M. crassisquama var. papillosa is described. Bristle production was found to be temperature dependent where cells formed serrated or helmet bristles under cold or warm conditions, respectively. M. crassisquama was found to exist over wide temperature, conductivity, phosphorus and pH ranges, however, was absent in samples with a pH <5.5.  相似文献

The silica‐scaled chrysophyte flora of Swedish Lapland (near Abisko) was examined. Chrysophyte scales were found in 18 of the 32 investigated water bodies (lakes and pools). Altogether, 28 taxa from the classes Chrysophyceae and Synurophyceae were found. The most abundant species was Synura echinulata. Three species were observed for the first time in Sweden: Mallomonas maculata, M. rasilis and Spiniferomonas serrata.  相似文献

A total of 34 scaled chrysophyte taxa (18 Mallomonas spp., 6 Synura spp., 2 Chrysosphaerella spp., 6 Spiniferomonas spp. and 2 Paraphysomonas spp.) were recorded by SEM techniques in 61 samples from 59 lakes locating in 8 national parks of southern and central Finland in July 1987. Most of the lakes were small forest and peat bog lakes with acid (pH 4.6–7.2) and soft-water and with variable water colour (10–350 mg Pt/l). The number of taxa per lake varied from 0 to 15 and it correlated very significantly with the water pH. The species structure was rather typical for the oligotrophic and acid lakes. Besides the eurytypic and common species like Mallomonus caudata (fr. 72.1% of lakes), M. crassisquama (65.6%), M. allorgei (62.3%) and M. akrokomos (52.5%) also M. canina (41.0%) and M. hamata (21.3%) were frequently observed. M. calceolus, M. costata, M. papillosa, M. pugio and M. paludosa were more rare but typical for acid lakes. Synuru splendida which occurred in two lakes was the most rare and a new species for Finland.  相似文献

In the conifer genus Juniperus (Cupressaceae), many species are increasing rapidly in distribution, abundance, and dominance in arid and semiarid regions. To help understand the success of junipers in drier habitats, we studied hydraulic traits associated with their water stress resistance, including vulnerability to xylem cavitation, specific conductivity (K(S)), tracheid diameter, conduit reinforcement, and wood density in stems and roots, as well as specific leaf area (SLA) of 14 species from the United States and the Caribbean. A new phylogeny based on DNA sequences tested the relationships between vulnerability to cavitation and other traits using both traditional cross-species correlations and independent contrast correlations. All species were moderately to highly resistant to water-stress-induced cavitation in both roots and shoots. We found strong phylogenetic support for two clades previously based on leaf margin serration (serrate and smooth). Species in the serrate clade were 34-39% more resistant to xylem cavitation in stems and roots than were species in the smooth clade and had ~35% lower K(S) and 39% lower SLA. Root and stem resistance to cavitation and SLA were all highly conserved traits. A high degree of conservation within clades suggests that hydraulic traits of Juniperus species strongly reflect phylogenetic history. The high resistance to cavitation observed may help explain the survival of junipers during recent extreme droughts in the southwestern United States and their expansion into arid habitats across the western and central United States.  相似文献

Knowledge of the tropical terrestrial cyanobacterial flora from the African continent is still limited. Of 31 strains isolated from soil and subaerial samples collected in Lagos State, Nigeria, three were found to be in the Oculatellaceae, including two species in a new genus. Subsequently, isolates from microbial mats in White Sands National Park in New Mexico, United States, and from a rock near the ocean in Puerto Rico, United States, were found to belong to the new genus as well. Cyanobacterial isolates were characterized microscopically, sequenced for the 16S rRNA gene and associated ITS region, and phylogenetically analyzed. Egbenema gen. nov., with three new species, as well as two new species of Albertania were differentiated from all other Oculatellaceae. Both genera belong to a supported clade within the Oculatellaceae that includes Trichotorquatus and Komarkovaea. The two new species of Albertania, A. egbensis and A. latericola, were from the same sample, but were evolutionarily separate based on 16S rRNA gene phylogenies, percent identity below the 98.7% threshold, and ITS rRNA percent dissimilarity >7.0%. Egbenema aeruginosum gen. et sp. nov. was phylogenetically separated from Trichotorquatus and Albertania but was in a clade with other strains belonging to Egbenema. The two Egbenema strains from the United States are here named Egbenema epilithicum sp. nov. and Egbenema gypsiphilum sp. nov. Our results support the hypothesis that further species discoveries of novel cyanobacteria will likely be made in soils and subaerial habitats, as these habitats continue to be studied, both in tropical and temperate biomes.  相似文献

The present study reports the chromosome number of 12 accessions belonging to 10 species of Salvia from the Sichuan Province in China. Most accessions have the chromosome number 2n=2x=16. However, three species ( S. evansiana, S. przewalskii and S. brevilabra ) are tetraploid with a chromosome number of 2n=4x=32. A B-chromosome was observed in S. tricuspis . The basic chromosome number x=8 was inferred for all accessions studied. The chromosome number of all the species was determined for the first time, except for S. evansiana, S. przewalskii , S. flava and S. miltiorrhiza . The chromosomes in this genus are mostly small (0.46–2.94 μm). The small size of the chromosomes, together with their unclear centromeres, has hampered a detailed karyotype analysis.  相似文献

Encysted acanthocephalans belonging to the genus Centrorhynchus were found in the body cavities of Sorex araneus (common shrew) and Sorex minutus (pygmy shrew) from Boxworth, Cambridgeshire, U.K. Fifty percent of the male S. araneus and 67% of the male S. minutus examined were found to be infected, with the mean intensity (+/-SD) being 54.3 +/- 91.3 and 14.7 +/- 18.4, respectively. The species of Centrorhynchus in the shrews may be Centrorhynchus aluconis, which is distributed widely in tawny owls, Strix aluco, in the United Kingdom. Shrews appear to serve as paratenic hosts for C. aluconis.  相似文献

1. A multimetric index of fish assemblage integrity was developed and similarity analyses were conducted on fish species in two central Indian rivers and the effects of distance from municipal and industrial effluents on those indices then evaluated.
2. Five metrics from Karr et al . (1986 , Illinois Natural History Survey Special Publication 5 , Urbana, IL) were adopted: intolerant species richness, % omnivorous individuals, % top carnivore individuals, total number of individuals and % individuals with anomalies. Seven new metrics (native species richness, native family richness, benthic species richness, water column species richness, % non-native individuals, % tolerant individuals and % herbivorous individuals) were added.
3. Non-native individuals represented 1–55% of the assemblages at sampled sites which held fish.
4. Fish were present at eleven sites and not collected at two sites, despite heavy metal concentrations exceeding U.S. Environmental Protection Agency acute criteria at all sites.
5. Two types of metric scoring were examined. The traditional 5–3–1 method showed the same pattern as continuous scoring from 0 to 10, but produced a higher integrity class at one site.
6. Scores on our modified index of fish assemblage integrity increased with distance downstream from a major effluent source in each river. Jaccard similarity scores between the least disturbed downstream site and all other sites decreased with increasing distance and disturbance.
7. It was concluded that Karr's original index and its theoretical foundations are easily adaptable, even to an ichthyofauna containing no species, and only two families (Cyprinidae, Poeciliidae), in common with the midwestern United States.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers and other karyological features of Arceuthobium are reported for all species and subspecific groups in the United States and 7 of the 13 entities occurring in Mexico. The only chromosome number known in the genus is n =14 and the karyotype appears to be fundamentally symmetrical. The bivalents are significantly smaller than in the related genus Phoradendron. No supernumerary chromosomes, sometimes present in Phoradendron, were observed in Arceuthobium. The existence of strong isolating mechanisms, which apparently preclude natural hybridization, is advanced as a possible explanation for the absence of polyploidy in the dwarf mistletoes. The flowering characteristics of the American species are analyzed and classified into three principal groups: (1) winter and early spring flowering species with southern distributions, (2) summer flowering species with more northerly distributions, and (3) spring flowering species with the highest latitudinal distributions, but which essentially complete floral development during the previous summer. A fourth group is intermediate between the first and second categories.  相似文献

Fossil fruits including nuts and associated husk valves of a new species of Carya (Juglandaceae) are described from the latest Miocene to earliest Pliocene in northeastern Tennessee, eastern United States. The husk valves are elliptic, 1.2–4.5 mm thick, with a convex exterior face and a concave interior face; the nuts are globose to ovoid in shape, smooth and longitudinally ribbed on exterior surface, with a short protruding apex and a slightly 4-angled base; inner ribs, lacunae and primary septa are well-developed, while secondary septa are absent or weakly developed. The combination of these carpological characteristics clearly shows a close resemblance to the genus Carya in Juglandaceae. Detailed comparisons of carpological morphology and anatomy indicate that the present fossil taxon is different from both living and most other fossil species of the genus, and therefore warrants the designation of a new fossil species, Carya tennesseensis Huang et al., sp. nov. Carya tennesseensis displays a carpological similarity to C. ventricosa from the late Oligocene to early Pliocene in Europe, suggesting a potential species exchange of the genus between Europe and southeastern North America during the late Neogene. The new fossil species represents one of the few fruit fossil species of Carya from its modern distribution range in southeastern North America. It provides crucial information for better understanding the rapid diversification of the genus from the late Miocene to early Pliocene, and the origin and establishment of today's Carya biodiversity in this region.  相似文献

Investigation of a small number of samples with representatives of the genus Diaphanosoma from the cladoceran collection of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C., U.S.A.) has revealed two new species, D. freyi and D. heberti, from Louisiana–Missouri and Newfoundland, respectively. The former looks like one of the most primitive species of the genus. Two other species, D. fluviatile and D. brevireme, are recorded from the southern United States for the first time. Members of the D. brachyurum and D. birgei species groups, which are morphologically variable and need further detailed investigations, were represented in the bulk of the material studied. The species richness of the genus in North America appears to be high and its composition is obviously complex but remains little studied.  相似文献

Seed size and germination requirements of eight (of nine) Sarracenia species, and 13 populations of S. purpurea were studied. All species except for S. purpurea are restricted to the southeastern United States, whereas S. purpurea ranges across Canada, southward along the eastern United States into Maryland and Virginia (S. purpurea ssp. purpurea), and from New Jersey southward into northern Florida and the coast of the Gulf of Mexico (S. purpurea ssp. venosa). I tested the hypotheses that dormancy-breaking requirements vary predictably among species across a latitudinal gradient. I also sought to determine whether seed size and germination requirements were useful characters for resolving systematic and phylogenetic questions within this genus. Seed size varied significantly among species, but variability in seed size within S. purpurea exceeded the variability in seed size observed across all eight species studied. Seeds of all species are morphophysiologically dormant upon dispersal. Length of required cool, moist pretreatment varied among species, and germination in higher latitude populations is enhanced with longer pretreatment. In contrast, variability in germination requirements of subspecies, varieties, and populations of the geographically wide-ranging S. purpurea was not related clearly to geographic location (latitude or elevation). Germination requirements do not map onto a proposed phylogeny of Sarracenia, but observed differences in germination requirements of S. purpurea ssp. venosa var. burkii relative to other populations of S. purpurea support the recent proposal to elevate this variety to species status.  相似文献

A new genusSpiniferomonas of the Synuraceae was established withSpiniferomonas bourrellii as the type species. The cells ofSpiniferomonas are solitary, freeswimming, biflagellated, and covered with siliceous scales and spines. The genus shows a similarity to theChrysosphaerella (Synuraceae) in the structure of scales and spines. In addition to the type species, six species were also described as the new taxa of this genus. They were named asS. abei, S. bilacunosa, S. trioralis, S. crucigera, S. conica, andS. alata, respectively. All the specimens were collected from ponds and lakes in Japan.S. trioralis was also collected from the Republic of South Africa. Sullivantia (Saxifragaceae) is restricted to the United States; its species occur in very specialized habitats such as wet cliffs and moist canyon walls in scattered localities from Washington and Oregon, eastward to Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, and Virginia. Relationships in the genus were reevaluated using data from morphology (including the use of greenhouse-grown plants), crossability, and flavonoid chemistry. The conclusion of this study is thatSullivantia comprises four morphologically similar allopatric taxa:S. oregana, S. hapemanii var.hapemanii, S. hapemannii var.purpusii, andS. sullivantii.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Most species in the genus Garrulax are found in subtropical or tropical areas of southeastern Asia, with few species adapted to temperate or high-altitude climates. We examined the behavior and reproductive ecology of Brown-cheeked Laughing Thrushes ( G. henrici ) from 1999 to 2005 at Xiongse Valley, Tibet. Cup-shaped nests located 0.4–2.6 m above ground were found in 13 different species of plants, with roses and barberries the most common nest substrates. Laughing thrushes were socially monogamous and no territorial behaviors were observed. Egg-laying was initiated in early May and ended by late August, with clutch sizes of either 2 or 3 eggs     . Incubation started with the first egg being laid and the incubation period lasted 13–17 d     . Young fledged at 14–16 d posthatching     . Of 38 nesting attempts with known fates, at least one nestling hatched in 32 nests (84%) and at least one young fledged from 21 nests (55%). The mean number of fledglings per successful nest was 2.2 (range 1–3; N = 21 nests). Compared to lowland congeners, Brown-cheeked Laughing Thrushes produced smaller clutches and larger eggs. Such differences suggest that laughing thrushes may invest more energy in fewer offspring at higher altitudes, as reported for other avian species and populations, and this may represent an adaptive response to high-altitude environments where climates are harsh and food availability may be limiting.  相似文献
