Aim North America harbours the most diverse freshwater mussel fauna on Earth. This fauna has high endemism at the continental scale and within individual river systems. Previous faunal classifications for North America were based on intuitive, subjective assessments of species distributions, primarily the occurrence of endemic species, and do not portray continent‐wide patterns of faunal similarity. The aim of this study is to provide an analytical portrayal of patterns of mussel diversity in a hierarchical framework that informs the biogeographical history of the fauna. Location The study considered the mussel fauna of North America from the Rio Grande system northwards. Methods Patterns of mussel faunal similarity in 126 river systems or lake watersheds across North America were examined. The dataset was developed from the literature and consisted of recent species presence/absence (282 species) in each drainage unit; subspecies were not included. Patterns of mussel diversity were examined with hierarchical cluster analysis, based on a pairwise distance matrix between all drainage units. Results Cluster analysis revealed 17 faunal provinces within four major faunal regions: Mississippian, Atlantic, Eastern Gulf and Pacific. The Mississippian Region dominates the North American fauna with 11 provinces, including five not recognized by previous classifications: Mississippi Embayment, Upper Mississippi, Great Plains, Ohioan and Pontchartrain–Pearl–Pascagoula. Within the Eastern Gulf Region (containing three provinces), the Escambia–Choctawhatchee Province is distinctive from the Apalachicolan Province, under which it was previously subsumed. Patterns of diversity in the Atlantic Region (two provinces) and Pacific Region (one province) were similar to previous classifications. Main conclusions The classification proposed in this study largely corroborates earlier schemes based on the occurrence of endemic species but identifies additional heterogeneity that reflects unique assemblages of widely distributed species. The study proposes a hierarchical structure that illustrates relationships among these provinces. Although some provinces in the Mississippian Region have high endemism, all Mississippian provinces share a group of widely distributed species. The Atlantic and Eastern Gulf regions have distinctive, endemic faunas suggesting limited past connectivity with the Mississippian Region. The Pacific Region is the most distinct fauna in North America and bears close affinity to the Eurasian mussel fauna.  相似文献

Mexico's Late Neogene mammal faunas are largely known from localities in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt; those from other morphotectonic provinces are few and far apart. Thus, the discovery of Late Miocene vertebrates in western Sierra Madre Oriental at San Luis Potosí, the Paso del Águila local fauna, significantly adds to this meager record. The assemblage was collected from the floodplain facies of the San Nicolás Formation, a ∼1100-m thick, dominantly fluviolacustrine and calcilithitic, 15°–20° NE dipping sequence preserved in the Peotillos-Tolentino Graben, between 22°11’–22°19’ N and 100°30’–100°39° W. It includes remains of cf. Trachemys, a small to medium-sized emydid chelonian, a large camelid, a small cervid and a new species of the equini Pliohippus s.s., comparable in size, cranial morphology and odontographic characters to the Clarendonian-Early Hemphillian horses of the Pliohippus clade. Ar-Ar dates from ash-fall tuffs seemingly above and below the fossiliferous strata, bracket the age between 12.33 and 7.41 Ma (i.e., late Middle to Late Miocene), that is, within the Late Clarendonian-Early Hemphillian NALMA interval, making this fauna the first in Mexico from this age. The Paso del Águila local fauna is at least partly correlative with the Hemphillian local faunas from the TMVB and adjacent areas (e.g., Rancho El Ocote, Guanajuato and Tecolotlán, Jalisco), the Central Plateau (e.g., Arroyo Los Fragmentos, Zacatecas), and the Sierra Madre Occidental (e.g., Yepómera). Elsewhere, it is broadly correlative with the Late Clarendonian-Early Hemphillian faunas from the California Coast Ranges (e.g., North Tejon Hills, Ricardo and Dove Springs in the Mohave Desert), and the Gulf Coast Plain, Florida (McGehee Farm and Mixon). The Paso del Águila local fauna was part of a subtropical savannah and pine-oak forest (with a well-developed understory) biome that thrived on a climate regime much more humid than today.  相似文献

Several specimensof Hercoglossa popenoei have been found in a loose slab of Paleocene limestone near Holguin, in Eastern Cuba. A review of references to Tertiary nautiloids from Cuba reveals that all previous data relate to Oligocène and Miocene recordsof Aturia. Hercoglossa popenoei does not occur in the rich Lower Tertiary nautiloid faunas of the comparatively close Gulf Coastal Plain, but has been described from the Paleocene of Baja California. Thus the record supports the large-scale eastward motion of the Caribbean plate during the Tertiary suggested recently by tectonic and palaeobiogeo-graphic studies.  相似文献

自 2 0世纪 60年代 ,陕西蓝田地区就以连续的晚新生代地层及丰富的哺乳动物化石而成为研究中国晚新生代哺乳动物与地层划分对比的经典地区之一。李传夔等 ( 1 984)根据灞河组发现的哺乳动物化石建立了灞河期 ,并与欧洲的Vallesian期对比。邱占祥等( 1 990 ,1 995)认为化石证据不充分 ,而将其与保德期合并。近年来 ,黄土高原三趾马红粘土大量的年代学资料表明 ,红粘土沉积最早可能开始于约 8Ma前。因此 ,狭义的保德期可能只代表了晚中新世晚期 ,晚中新世哺乳动物分期的再划分问题又重新被提出。自 1 997年以来 ,我们课题组在蓝田地区共发现 52个化石地点 ,其中的 2 6个含有哺乳动物化石 ,大哺乳动物化石标本共计 1 666件。经过详细野外地层测量 ,绘制了综合地层剖面 ,并将主要含哺乳动物化石的地点对比标定到综合地层剖面上。经过对各门类化石的初步研究 ,以及对已有化石材料的初步修订 ,到目前为止 ,陕西蓝田灞河组共计发现哺乳动物化石 45种 ,蓝田组 2 0种。新的化石证据表明 ,灞河组发现的哺乳动物化石组合完全不同于典型意义上的保德三趾马动物群。大哺乳动物化石以灞河三趾马与贾氏三趾马为代表 ,牛科化石组合在种级甚至属级上有明显的区别。大量的陕西转角羚羊 ,小型的Protoryx、Dorcadoryx以及Ga  相似文献

Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) savanna characterized by open-canopy, diverse herbaceous vegetation, and high amounts of bare soil once covered much of the southeastern United States Coastal Plain. The unique structural and vegetative conditions of this ecosystem support endemic reptiles and amphibians that have declined as longleaf pine forests have been lost or degraded. Private working pine (Pinus spp.) forests managed for timber production now occur throughout the southeastern United States and have replaced much of the historical longleaf pine savanna. The examination of herpetofaunal (reptile, amphibian) communities in private working loblolly pine (P. taeda) landscapes, particularly in the western Gulf Coastal Plain is lacking. Using repeated field surveys and hierarchical community occupancy models, we examined occupancy and species richness of herpetofauna across 81 sites spanning gradients of management practices, vegetative conditions, and soil composition in northwestern Louisiana, USA, 2017–2019. Young pine stands (<6 yr) exhibited structural characteristics most similar to mature longleaf pine reference sites (>30 yr), while mid-aged stands (13–26 yr) often featured closed canopy and dense midstory. Vegetation conditions varied widely depending on landscape characteristics and site-specific disturbance regimes. We documented 43 species of herpetofauna, including 9 open-pine-associated species. Occupancy of open-pine-associated herpetofauna was positively associated with open-canopy and understory conditions, and sandy soil area. Sites providing open-canopy conditions were often occupied by open-pine-associated species regardless of overstory type and disturbance method. Overall richness of herpetofauna was greatest at sites with moderate canopy cover outside of sandy soil regions. Working pine landscapes in the western Gulf Coastal Plain can support diverse herpetofaunal assemblages, including open-pine-associated species, when management practices maintain open-canopy conditions on sandy, upland soils. More broadly, our results provide insight into how forest management practices affect herpetofauna and may guide practices that can contribute to conservation value of working pine forests.  相似文献

Togay, a locality from Ol’khon Island, Baykal Lake, Russia, has yielded a fauna of snakes of Late Middle or early Late Miocene age. It is located in a broad area from which no Neogene snake has been reported; therefore, it represents an important landmark. The fauna includes a non-erycine boid, two or three colubrids, a viperid of the ‘oriental complex’ of Vipera, and perhaps another viperid. This assemblage is astonishingly reminiscent of the snake faunas from the late Early and early Middle Miocene from western and central Europe, it being understood that Miocene faunas are practically unknown in the geographically intermediary area. It may be entertained whether a homogenous snake fauna inhabited Eurasia (except the southern part of the continent) during the Miocene.  相似文献

We employed restriction site variation in mitochondrial (mt)DNA to determine if significant phylogeographic structure occurs in the North American cyprinid fish Cyprinella lutrensis. Digestion patterns from 16 restriction endonucleases identified fifty mtDNA haplotypes among 127 individuals of Cyprinella lutrensis assayed from localities in the Gulf Coastal Plain, the Great Plains, and the Central Lowlands. Nucleotide sequence divergence among haplotypes was highly variable (mean ± SE: 2.87%± 0.08; range: 0.14–9.24%). Maximum-parsimony analysis and the neighbour joining method of tree construction revealed three major groupings (clades) of haplotypes that differed in geographic distribution. Divergence estimates between the basal clade, comprised of haplotypes primarily from the Brazos River in east Texas, and the remaining two clades, place C. lutrensis in the western Gulf Coastal Plain prior to Pleistocene glaciation. Nucleotide sequence divergence between the second clade, comprised of haplotypes from the Trinity and Calcasieu rivers in east Texas and southwestern Louisiana, respectively, and the third clade (comprised primarily of haplotypes from localities north of Texas and affected directly by Pleistocene glaciation), suggest that C. lutrensis colonized gladated regions to the north during the mid- to late Pleistocene. This hypothesis is supported by levels of intrapopulational nucleotide diversity in geographic localities outside of Texas and by geological evidence. Despite marked geographic variation in morphometries, meristics, and nuptial coloration, mtDNA variation in glaciated regions was not geographically structured, and subspecies of C. lutrensis were not identifiable by phylogenetic analysis of mtDNA.  相似文献

Restriction-endonuclease-site variation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was used to investigate patterns of geographic and phylogenetic divergence within the rodent genus Onychomys. Onychomys has occupied arid habitats in the western North American deserts, shrub-steppes, and grasslands since the late Tertiary. A phylogenetic analysis of the total mtDNA restriction-site variation throughout the range of Onychomys suggests that the distribution of this genus has been affected by the same Quaternary pluvial-interpluvial climatic fluctuations that have resulted in the periodic fragmentation of arid habitats in western North America. Onychomys mtDNA haplotypes define at least five discrete geographical subsets, suggesting that there are five areas of endemism for biota restricted to arid and semiarid habitats in North America. The mtDNA-haplotype phylogeny can be used to infer an hypothesis of historical relationships among the five areas of endemism as follows: ([{(Wyoming Basin + Interior Plains + Colorado Plateaus) + (Columbia Basin + Great Basin)} + Gulf Coastal Plain] + Chihuahuan) + Western Deserts. The results of this study point to the potential use of mtDNA-haplotype phylogenies to reconstruct historical biogeographic events in Quaternary time. The utility of mtDNA variation depends in part on the ecology and distribution of the species being examined. Therefore, our hypothesized area cladogram can be tested by investigating regional relationships in other western North American taxa with distributions similar to Onychomys.  相似文献

Biostratigraphic correlation based on microfossil datum levels, directly or indirectly tied to the paleomagnetic time scale, provides a high resolution time control for the Miocene in the equatorial and middle latitude North Pacific. Faunal changes and abundance fluctuations of planktic foraminiferal species combined with the oxygen Pacific. Faunal changes and abundance fluctuations of planktic foraminiferal species combined with the oxygen isotope record of foraminifers, reveal the paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic history. The planktic foraminiferal assemblage change in the early Miocene, extinction of Oligocene fauna and rise of a highly diverse Neogene fauna, appears to be related to increased water mass stratification in the world oceans presumably resulting from the establishment of circum-Antarctic circulation. An increase in the siliceous productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific region between 20 and 18 Ma suggests that the vertical and horizontal circulation was intensified at that time. Climates cooled rapidly during the middle Miocene between 14 and 13 Ma suggesting the growth of a major east Antarctic ice sheet. Paleoclimatic conditions remained generally cool, although oscillating, during the late Miocene. In the late early to middle Miocene faunal provincialism developed between low and middle latitudes, and by late Miocene time a distinct provincialism similar to the present was established.  相似文献

Hyper-longirostry, the character of having extremely elongated rostra, emerged in the early and middle Miocene among several different clades of echolocating toothed whales (odontocetes) followed by a rapid decline near the end of the middle Miocene, and postdated by a much lower number of occurrences in the late Miocene and Pliocene and a complete absence among extant odontocetes. New finds of unreworked fossils of Xiphiacetus cristatus (Eurhinodelphinidae) in the middle Tortonian Diest Formation in Belgium (9.54–8.8 Ma) allow for the documentation of the survival of a hyper-longirostrine dolphin into the early late Miocene. An extensive dataset of the rostral index (calculated as the ratio between rostral length and condylobasal length) of Neogene and extant odontocetes is compiled and presented here, which facilitates discussion of evolutionary trends of rostrum proportions during a time period spanning 23 million years. Of interest, the iterative survival into the late Miocene of a single different species of hyper-longirostrine dolphins in a number of paleogeographic regions (North Sea Basin, Atlantic Coastal Plain, and probably the southeastern Pacific) is noted, whereas hyper-longirostrine morphologies only seem to re-appear by the late Messinian in the Northeastern Pacific. A correlation between this pattern and a decrease in habitat size for coastal to estuarine dolphins linked to a major sea level drop is tentatively proposed; such a process may also have played a role in the ecological shift in several dolphin families to freshwater habitats.

简短报道了 2 0 0 0年和 2 0 0 2年采自内蒙古高特格上新统的一批哺乳动物化石。这些材料包括小型和大、中型哺乳动物 ,计有 7目 2 2科 41属 46种。在群体的结构上 ,这一哺乳动物群与最晚中新世二登图动物群、早上新世比例克和高庄动物群接近 ,但其时代比二登图和比例克动物群都晚 ,而可能比高庄动物群的上部稍早。高特格动物群似乎代表中国新近纪哺乳动物群序列中的一个新成员 ,时代应为早上新世晚期 ,或中国哺乳动物年代的榆社期早期 ,大体与欧洲陆相哺乳动物时代的早露西尼晚期或MN1 5a的时代相当。动物群的组合指示了一个以温带草原为主 ,局部地方有灌木丛林和水体的生态环境 ,与二登图和比例克动物群的情况相似。从晚中新世二登图动物群到早上新世高特格动物群的演替表明 ,内蒙古中部地区在这一时期的环境似乎渐趋干旱和草原化。  相似文献

Aim A small fauna of amphibious snails (genus Assiminea Fleming, 1828) living in association with highly mineralized springs in the Death Valley–lower Colorado River region (DVLCR) is thought to be a relict of the Bouse Embayment, a putative late Miocene–early Pliocene transgression of the ancestral Gulf of California along the lower Colorado River valley. We analysed the phylogenetic relationships of this fauna using mtDNA sequence data (1171 bp) to determine whether, as would be consistent with this hypothesis, it forms a substantially divergent unit sister to marine coastal congeners. Location South‐western Great Basin and lower Colorado River region, USA. Methods Two genes [mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA gene] were sequenced for 10 populations of DVLCR assimineas (Assiminea infima Berry, 1947 ; Assiminea sp.). We also sequenced an undescribed population from a spring in the Colorado River delta; western North American Pacific Coastal Assiminea californica (Tryon, 1865); the three other congeners that live on the continent; and three Old World assimineids (outgroups). Phylogenies based on the combined data set were obtained using Bayesian methods, and divergence times were estimated using a COI molecular clock for related gastropods. Results Composite haplotypes of the DVLCR assimineas, together with that observed in the Colorado River delta population, formed a weakly supported clade that was sister to a clade composed of populations of North American Pacific and Atlantic coastal species. The genetic distance between members of these two clades was 3.46 ± 0.47% for COI and 1.69 ± 0.38% for 16S. The former clade was composed of five subunits that differed from each other by 1.29–2.84% (COI) and 0.52–1.98% (16S) sequence divergence. Main conclusions Application of the COI clock suggests that progenitors of the DVLCR fauna diverged from coastal ancestors 2.13–1.89 Ma (late Pliocene), several million years after the Bouse Embayment would have been terminated by the establishment of the lower (freshwater) Colorado River. This finding, together with shallow genetic structuring of several DVLCR lineages that are widely distributed across the topographically complex regional landscape, suggests that the Assiminea fauna of this inland area was more likely to have been founded by coastal colonists transported on water birds than through a direct connection with the sea.  相似文献

Question: Can the geographic patterning of endemic plant species inform reserve selection in a region of high endemism? Location: The Southeastern Coastal Plain of North America, focusing primarily on the imperiled longleaf pine (Pinus palustris P. Miller) ecosystem. Methods: We documented the high level of plant endemism in the region, and characterized the endemic taxa into distributional subregions. Results: A total of 1630 plant taxa are endemic to the Coastal Plain, a large proportion of which are endemic to phytogeographical subregions within the Coastal Plain, with particularly large numbers of narrow endemics occurring in the East Gulf Coastal Plain and Florida Peninsula. Conclusions: This pattern of local endemism presents challenges in conserving the full biota of the region: a reserve system focusing on few and large conservation areas has theoretical benefits for long‐term management and viability, but will fail to capture many local endemics. We propose that the dispersed distribution of endemic species will require a mixture of large core reserves and smaller satellite reserves.  相似文献

A new gastropod fauna of Burdigalian (early Miocene) age is described from the Iranian part of Makran. The fauna comprises 19 species and represents three distinct assemblages from turbid water coral reef, shallow subtidal soft-bottom and mangrove-fringed mudflat environments in the northern Indian Ocean. Especially the reef-associated assemblage comprises largely new species. This is explained by the rare occurrence of reefs along the northern margin of the Miocene Indian Ocean and the low number of scientific studies dealing with the region. In terms of paleobiogeography, the fauna corresponds well to coeval faunas from the Pakistani Balochistan and Sindh provinces and the Indian Kathiawar, Kutch and Kerala provinces. During the early Miocene, these constituted a discrete biogeographic unit, the Western Indian Province, which documents the near complete biogeographic isolation from the Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Some mudflat taxa might represent examples of vicariance following the Tethys closure. The fauna also displays little connection with coeval faunas from Indonesia, documenting a strong provincialism within the Indo-West Pacific Region during early Miocene times. Neritopsis gedrosiana sp. nov., Calliostoma irerense sp. nov., Calliostoma mohtatae sp. nov. and Trivellona makranica sp. nov. are described as new species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Geographically isolated breeding populations of migratory shorebirds may be demographically connected through shared nonbreeding habitats. We used long-term (1998–2008) mark-recapture data on piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) collected from 7 separate studies located throughout North America to conduct a range-wide analysis of after hatch year apparent survival (φAHY). Our objectives were to compare concurrent survival estimates from disparate breeding sites and determine whether estimates followed similar trends or were correlated among breeding populations with shared wintering grounds. Average survival estimates were higher for Great Plains populations (range = 0.69–0.81) than for Great Lakes and Atlantic Coast populations (range = 0.56–0.71). Linear trend models indicated that apparent survival declined in 4 out of 7 populations, was unchanged in 3, and was generally highest among Great Plains populations. Based on a post hoc analysis, we found evidence of correlated year-to-year fluctuations in annual survival among populations wintering primarily along the southeastern United States Atlantic Coast and Gulf Coast. Our results indicate shared overwintering or stopover sites may influence annual variation in survival among geographically disparate breeding populations. Declines in piping plover survival are a cause for concern, and our results highlight the need for conservation efforts to include habitat used during the migratory and wintering periods.  相似文献

Continental biodiversity gradients result not only from ecological processes, but also from evolutionary and geohistorical processes involving biotic turnover in landscape and climatic history over millions of years. Here, we investigate the evolutionary and historical contributions to the gradient of increasing species richness with topographic complexity. We analysed a dataset of 418 fossil rodent species from western North America spanning 25 to 5 Ma. We compared diversification histories between tectonically active (Intermontane West) and quiescent (Great Plains) regions. Although diversification histories differed between the two regions, species richness, origination rate and extinction rate per million years were not systematically different over the 20 Myr interval. In the tectonically active region, the greatest increase in originations coincided with a Middle Miocene episode of intensified tectonic activity and global warming. During subsequent global cooling, species richness declined in the montane region and increased on the Great Plains. These results suggest that interactions between tectonic activity and climate change stimulate diversification in mammals. The elevational diversity gradient characteristic of modern mammalian faunas was not a persistent feature over geologic time. Rather, the Miocene rodent record suggests that the elevational diversity gradient is a transient feature arising during particular episodes of Earth''s history.  相似文献

Abstract Horning vegetation, an expression of aggression predominately among adult males, may be universal among horned ungulates. We found that horning by wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) males had an important impact on the Serengeti ecosystem, Africa, from the 1960s to the 1980s, as the wildebeest population increased from 0.25 million to 1.5 million. Between 1979 and 2003, we sampled 2,626 trees and bushes to assess horning impacts. In the 1986 survey, 57% (n = 1,416) of trees and bushes had suffered moderate to severe horning injury. Severe damage frequency was highest (68%) in open grassland, where a few trees were exposed to many wildebeests, and lowest (24%) inside savanna woodland where wildebeest rarely go. Horning by 300,000–400,000 adult male wildebeest contributed to converting savanna woodland into tree savanna and open grassland. Horning by wildebeest, in combination with known impacts such as grazing, manuring, and trampling, may result in ecological impacts to Serengeti ecosystems only exceeded by the elephant (Loxodonta africana) and fire. More research is needed to understand the ecological and management implications of horning.  相似文献

Tree cover is a fundamental structural characteristic and driver of ecosystem processes in terrestrial ecosystems, and trees are a major global carbon (C) sink. Fire and herbivores have been hypothesized to play dominant roles in regulating trees in African savannas, but the evidence for this is conflicting. Moving up a trophic scale, the factors that regulate fire occurrence and herbivores, such as disease and predation, are poorly understood for any given ecosystem. We used a Bayesian state-space model to show that the wildebeest population irruption that followed disease (rinderpest) eradication in the Serengeti ecosystem of East Africa led to a widespread reduction in the extent of fire and an ongoing recovery of the tree population. This supports the hypothesis that disease has played a key role in the regulation of this ecosystem. We then link our state-space model with theoretical and empirical results quantifying the effects of grazing and fire on soil carbon to predict that this cascade may have led to important shifts in the size of pools of C stored in soil and biomass. Our results suggest that the dynamics of herbivores and fire are tightly coupled at landscape scales, that fire exerts clear top-down effects on tree density, and that disease outbreaks in dominant herbivores can lead to complex trophic cascades in savanna ecosystems. We propose that the long-term status of the Serengeti and other intensely grazed savannas as sources or sinks for C may be fundamentally linked to the control of disease outbreaks and poaching.  相似文献

The lakes formed by large power dams are populated by basically riverine faunas. The African Great Lakes are populated by highly specialized endemic faunas containing the bulk of the world's lacustrine fish species. Examples from the fauna of Lake Malawi are considered to illustrate the utilization of various niches, and it is suggested that such specialized species should be introduced into large tropical impoundments to utilize niches probably not fully occupied at present. Such introductions would pose little threat to the ecosystem of the rest of the river system into which they are introduced because of their close specialization to lacustrine conditions.  相似文献

1.?To address effects of land use and human overexploitation on wildlife populations, it is essential to better understand how human activities have changed species composition, diversity and functioning. Theoretical studies modelled how network properties change under human-induced, non-random species loss. However, we lack data on realistic species-loss sequences in threatened, real-world food webs to parameterize these models. 2.?Here, we present a first size-structured topological food web of one of the most pristine terrestrial ecosystems in the world, the Serengeti ecosystem (Tanzania). The food web consists of 95 grouped nodes and includes both invertebrates and vertebrates ranging from body masses between 10(-7) and 10(4) kg. 3.?We study the topological changes in this food web that result from the simulated IUCN-based species-loss sequence representing current species vulnerability to human disturbances in and around this savanna ecosystem. We then compare this realistic extinction scenario with other extinction sequences based on body size and connectance and perform an analysis of robustness of this savanna food web. 4.?We demonstrate that real-world species loss in this case starts with the biggest (mega) herbivores and top predators, causing higher predator-prey mass ratios. However, unlike theoretically modelled linear species deletion sequences, this causes poor-connected species to be lost first, while more highly connected species become lost as human impact progresses. This food web shows high robustness to decreasing body size and increasing connectance deletion sequences compared with a high sensitivity to the decreasing connectance deletion scenario. 5.?Furthermore, based on the current knowledge of the Serengeti ecosystem, we discuss how the focus on food web topology alone, disregarding nontrophic interactions, may lead to an underestimation of human impacts on wildlife communities, with the number of trophic links affected by a factor of two. 6.?This study underlines the importance of integrative efforts between the development of food web theory and basic field work approaches in the quantification of the structure of interaction networks to sustain natural ecosystems in a changing world.  相似文献
