In experiments on 18 sheep with a differentiated nitrogen intake (3.7, 6.2 and 21 g N/day), it was found that different enzyme activities--glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) (NADH- and NADPH-dependent) and glutamine synthetase (GS)--of bacteria adhering to the rumen wall and to food particles and the rumen fluid bacteria altered in correlation to the nitrogen intake. With a nitrogen intake of 3.7-6.2 g/day there was a significant increase, and of 6.2-21 g/day a decrease, in NADH- and NADPH-dependent GDH activity in the three given bacterial fractions, with the exception of NADPH-dependent GDH activity of the rumen fluid bacteria of sheep given 3.7-6.2 g N/day, in which the difference was nonsignificant. GS activity was significantly higher only in adherent rumen wall bacteria in the presence of a nitrogen intake of 3.7-6.2-21 g/day. The results show that the effect of the nitrogen intake on the given enzyme activities is strongest in the case of bacteria adhering to the rumen wall. The high GS activity and low GDH activities in these bacteria during lower nitrogen intakes (3.7 g/day) as well as lower rumen ammonia concentration (2.39 +/- 0.98 mmol.l-1) indicate that bacteria adhering to the rumen wall utilize ammonia at an increased rate by means of CS catalyzed reactions. Reduced GDH activity in the presence of a high nitrogen intake (21 g/day) and the relatively high rumen ammonia concentration (36.63 +/- 5.28 mmol.l-1) indicate that ammonia inhibits this enzyme in the rumen bacteria in question.  相似文献

The nitrogen retention and plasma amino acid concentration were determined in eight preterm infants (mean birth weight 970 +/- 130 g; mean gestational age 28 +/- 1 weeks) receiving successively total parenteral nutrition and their own mother''s milk. The nitrogen retention during both regimens was comparable to the fetal accretion rate. Plasma amino acid concentrations were lower during the enteral phase of the study than during parenteral nutrition. The metabolic response of small preterm infants is related to the quality of amino acids as well as to the route of intake.  相似文献

Three tropical tubers, raw or processed by steam-pelleting, were studied in the rumen in vitro or in the chicken in vivo in order to determine the effects of the nature and of the treatment of the tubers on urea utilization by rumen microflora, starch breakdown in the crop and the performance of growing chickens.Starch of cassava (Manihot utilissima) and of sweet potato (Ipomea batata) is characterised by an X-ray diffraction pattern of the A-type and is therefore similar to starch of cereals. In vitro these starches were well broken down in the presence of α-amylase from B. subtilis, and were good sources of energy for rumen microbial growth; in vivo they were completely digested by growing chickens. Compared to cassava, the fermentation of sweet potato in rumen and crop led to increased acidity. The cassava diet gave a better nitrogen retention and growth performance associated with higher food intake. In contrast, starch of yam (Dioscorea cayenensis) which is characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern of the B-type, and by large granules like potato starch, was less susceptible to α-amylase and promoted lower microbial proteosynthesis in vitro. Starch from a yam diet was more slowly degraded in the crop and its overall digestibility was only 83%. Yam reduced feed intake and gave lower nitrogen retention and lower food conversion ratio and consequently poor growth. The steam-pelleting treatment increased starch availability and permitted better urea utilization by rumen microflora. It improved N retention and feed efficiency of chicken diets, although not significantly. The greatest effect of the treatment was observed with yam.In conclusion, the digestibility of a given starch seems to be related to its structure, characterized by the type of X-ray diffraction pattern, which could be a help in tuber selection for animal nutrition. Simple processing such as steam-pelleting may improve the nutritive value of a tuber, especially when its starch has a B-type crystallinity.  相似文献

The objective was to investigate the effect of intake before fasting on concentrations of metabolites and hormones, respiratory quotient (RQ) and fasting heat production (HP) using the washed rumen technique and to compare these values with those from the fed state. Six Holstein steers (360±22 kg) were maintained at 21°C and fed three different energy intakes within a replicated 3×3 Latin square design with 21-day periods. Steers were fed alfalfa cubes to provide 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0×NEm during 19 days of each experimental period. Steers were placed in individual metabolism stalls fitted with indirect calorimetry head-boxes on day 20 of each experimental period (FED steers) and fed their normal meal. On day 21 of each period the reticulorumen was emptied, washed and refilled with ruminal buffer (NaCl=96; NaHCO3=24; KHCO3=30; K2HPO4=2; CaCl2=1.5; MgCl2=1.5 mmol/kg of buffer) aerated with 75% N2 and 25% CO2 before introduction to the rumen (steers were not fed; WASHED steers). Each gas exchange was measured over 24 h. HP for 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0×NEm were 479, 597 and 714 kJ/daykg0.75 (s.e.m. =16), respectively. The plateau RQ was 0.756, 0.824 and 0.860 for the 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0×NEm intakes for the FED steers, respectively. After rumen washing, fasting HP was 331, 359 and 400 kJ/daykg0.75 (s.e.m.=13) for 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0×NEm intakes before fasting, respectively. The RQ for WASHED rumen steers was 0.717, 0.710 and 0.719, respectively. Cortisol and β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations in WASHED rumen steers did not exceed threshold levels for severe energy deficit and stress as can be induced from prolonged fasting. This study demonstrates that a fasting state can be emulated using the washed rumen technique, minimizing the time required as opposed to traditional fasting methodologies, without causing a severe energy deficit and stress.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of extruded full-fat soybean (ESB) as a replacement for soybean meal (SBM) on nutrient intake, rumen fermentation, and growth performance of dairy calves. A total of 45 male Holstein dairy calves (42.0±0.5 kg of BW) were randomly assigned to one of three experimental diets: (1) 0% ESB (Control): 35.3% SBM no ESB; (2) 25% ESB: 27.0% SBM+9.0% ESB; and (3) 50% ESB: 19.0% SBM+19.0% ESB. All calves were weaned on day 56 of age and remained in the study until day 70 of age. During the pre-weaning and overall periods, substituting of SBM with ESB had no effect on intake of starter feed, metabolizable energy (ME), CP and non-fiber carbohydrate (NFC). Compared with the control, 50% ESB resulted in a decrease in starter feed intake, and intakes of other nutrients including CP, NFC and ME during the post-weaning period. Substituting SBM with ESB decreased intake of C16 : 0 and increased intakes of n-9 C18 : 1, n-6 C18 : 2 and n-3 C18 : 3 during the pre-weaning, post-weaning and overall periods. Using ESB as a replacement for SBM did not affect average daily gain, feed efficiency, rectal temperature and fecal score over the trial periods. Compared with control, the rumen concentration of NH3-N decreased for 50% ESB on days 35 and 56 of age but not when compared with 25% ESB. Rumen pH, total volatile fatty acids concentrations, and the molar proportions of ruminal acetate, propionate and butyrate were not different among treatments. Body measurements were not affected by the treatments. In conclusion, substitution of SBM with ESB may improve nitrogen utilization efficiency in dairy calves but slightly reduce post-weaning starter intake with no negative outcomes on growth performance and rumen fermentation.  相似文献

Three Polish Friesian bulls fitted with rumen and duodenal canulas were used in a 3 × 3 Latin square experiment to study the effect of Ca soaps of rapeseed fatty acids (CSRFA) on rumen fermentation, nutrient and fatty acid (FA) flow to the duodenum, and to investigate in vivo the possibility of using CSRFA as a means of protecting soya bean meal protein against degradation in the rumen. Treatments were (1) control, no fat (2) CSRFA, at 2% of dietary DM and (3) SBM protein coated with CSRFA (CSRFA:SBM, 1:1, wt/wt), at 4% of dietary DM. The animals were fed isonitrogenous diets, containing 45% meadow hay, 10% fodder beet and 45% concentrate mixture on a DM basis. Intake was limited to 80 g DM d−1 kg−0.75. There were no treatment effects on rumen fermentation, rumen liquid turnover rate or volume, suggesting that CSRFA were inert in the rumen. A slight decrease in ammonia concentration in the rumen fluid from the CSRFA:SBM diet and the degradability data do not confirm the protection of SBM protein by CSRFA. Treatments did not affect apparent OM digestibility in the rumen, total N and NAN (non-ammonia nitrogen) flow into the duodenum or microbial protein synthesis. However, rumen degradability of protein was increased by feeding CSRFA. Feeding CSRFA significantly increased the duodenal flows of C18:0, C18:1 and total FA, but when expressed as a percentage of intake, there were no significant treatment differences. The average duodenal flow of total FA was 81.7% of intake. Extents of biohydrogenation of unsaturated FA were decreased in diets containing CSRFA. Estimated net biohydrogenation of C18:2, C18:3 and total unsaturated C18 FA of CSRFA was 43.3, 60.4 and 59.4%, respectively. Postrumen and total tract digestibility of total and individual FA were not different between treatments  相似文献

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine energy intake, energy expenditure, diet composition, and obesity of adolescents in Northern Greece. Research Methods and Procedures: Anthropometric measurements were taken for all participants. Height, weight, and skinfold thickness at two sites were measured. BMI and percentage body fat were calculated. Energy intake and macronutrient and micronutrient intakes were determined by a 3‐day weighed dietary diary. Energy expenditure was calculated based on calculated resting metabolic rate (RMR) 1 multiplied by an activity factor based on reported physical activity. Results: Thirty‐one percent of boys and 21% of girls had BMI corresponding to ≥25 kg/m2 at 18 years and were classified as overweight. Both overweight boys and girls reported a lower energy intake compared with their non‐overweight counterparts when expressed as kilocalories per kilogram body weight. Overweight children had a higher negative energy balance. Both overweight and non‐overweight adolescents had higher than recommended fat intakes. Mean daily carbohydrate, protein, and fat intake, expressed as grams per kilogram body weight, of overweight adolescents were significantly lower compared with the non‐overweight adolescents. Total daily carbohydrate intake, when expressed in grams, was found to be higher for non‐overweight adolescents. Both overweight boys and girls had lower iron intakes than their non‐overweight counterparts. Overweight boys had statistically lower fiber and niacin intakes than non‐overweight boys. Both overweight and non‐overweight adolescents had lower than recommended iron intakes. Furthermore, overweight adolescents consumed more snacks (potato chips, chocolate bars, pizza, cheese pie, and cream pie), more sugar, jam, and honey, and fewer legumes, vegetables, and fruits than their non‐overweight counterparts. Discussion: Reported energy intake of overweight adolescents was lower than their non‐overweight counterparts. Regarding diet composition overweight subjects had significantly lower intakes of carbohydrates compared with non‐overweight subjects. The food consumption pattern of overweight children showed less adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet.  相似文献

Goat living in harsh environments represents a climax in the capacity of domestic ruminants to adjust to such areas. This ability is multifactorial: low body mass, and low metabolic requirements of goats can be regarded as an important asset to them for it minimise their maintenance and water requirements, in areas where water sources are widely distributed and food sources are limited by their quantity and quality. An ability to reduce metabolism allows goats to survive even after prolonged periods of severe limited food availability. A skillful grazing behaviour and efficient digestive system enable goats to attain maximal food intake and maximal food utilisation in a given condition. There is a positive interaction between the better recycling rate of urea and a better digestion of such food in desert goats. The rumen plays an important role in the evolved adaptations by serving as a huge fermentation vat and water reservoir. The water stored in the rumen is utilised during dehydration, and the rumen serves as a container, which accommodates the ingested water upon rehydration. The rumen, the salivary glands and the kidney coordinately function in the regulation of water intake and water distribution following acute dehydration and rapid rehydration. Goats in the tropics, when possible, eat a diet composed of tree-leaves and shrubs (browse), which ensure a reliable and steady supply of food all year around, albeit, from a low to medium quality food. Some of the physiological features of ruminants defined as intermediate feeders like large salivary gland, the large absorptive area of their rumen epithelium, and the capacity to change rapidly the volume of the foregut in response to environmental changes are most likely responsible for the goat’s superior digestion capacity.  相似文献

Effect of dietary energy intake on tubular reabsorption of urea in sheep   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The aim of the experiment was to determine the effect of dietary energy intake on renal urea excretion in sheep with different nitrogen intakes. The control sheep, with a high nitrogen and energy intake, were given a daily feed dose of 21.18 g N and 15.2 MJ digestible energy (DE). The two experimental groups, with an equal, low nitrogen intake, were given diets with a different energy content. The high energy diet contained 3.63 g N and 14.18 MJ DE, the low energy diet 3.4 g N and 6.44 MJ DE. After nine weeks' adaptation to the diets, renal functions were measured by a standard clearance technique. It was found that, under stable urine flow conditions, both groups given the low nitrogen diet had a significantly lower glomerular filtration rate, fractional urea excretion and total urea excretion. A reciprocal comparison of these two groups showed that fractional urea excretion by the sheep with a high energy intake was significantly lower than in the group with a low energy intake. There were no differences in the glomerular filtration rate. A raised dietary energy intake in the presence of a low nitrogen intake caused marked natriuresis and kaliuresis. The results indicate that a raised dietary energy intake can be a significant factor in potentiating the renal effect of urea retention in sheep with a low nitrogen intake.  相似文献

Seventeen non-lactating dairy-bred suckler cows (LF; Limousin×Holstein-Friesian) and 17 non-lactating beef composite breed suckler cows (ST; Stabiliser) were used to study enteric methane emissions and energy and nitrogen (N) utilization from grass silage diets. Cows were housed in cubicle accommodation for 17 days, and then moved to individual tie-stalls for an 8-day digestibility balance including a 2-day adaption followed by immediate transfer to an indirect, open-circuit, respiration calorimeters for 3 days with gaseous exchange recorded over the last two of these days. Grass silage was offered ad libitum once daily at 0900 h throughout the study. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) between the genotypes for energy intakes, energy outputs or energy use efficiency, or for methane emission rates (methane emissions per unit of dry matter intake or energy intake), or for N metabolism characteristics (N intake or N output in faeces or urine). Accordingly, the data for both cow genotypes were pooled and used to develop relationships between inputs and outputs. Regression of energy retention against ME intake (r2=0.52; P<0.001) indicated values for net energy requirements for maintenance of 0.386, 0.392 and 0.375 MJ/kg0.75 for LF+ST, LF and ST respectively. Methane energy output was 0.066 of gross energy intake when the intercept was omitted from the linear equation (r2=0.59; P<0.001). There were positive linear relationships between N intake and N outputs in manure, and manure N accounted for 0.923 of the N intake. The present results provide approaches to predict maintenance energy requirement, methane emission and manure N output for suckler cows and further information is required to evaluate their application in a wide range of suckler production systems.  相似文献

The nutrient status of Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake in southeastern Kenya, has been rising since at least 1982. A potential effect of increases in nutrient supply to the lake's floating papyrus is increasing of the plants’ investment in above–water material and reduction of the amount of energy invested in uptake and storage. Biomass and its allocation between culms, panicles, roots, and rhizomes was measured in 17 sites around the 150–km2 lake. Although above–water biomass was greatest in sites closest to the lake's major nutrient inflow, the River Malewa, there was little evidence of corresponding decreases in the biomass of uptake and storage tissues. In August 1995, the average ± SD biomass of papyrus in the lake was 11,540 ± 3020 g/m2, with the papyrus containing about 4500 ± 1900 g total carbon/m2 and about 100 ± 70 g total nitrogen/m2. Plant nitrogen contents did not vary with distance from the main external nutrient supply. Together with low nitrogen concentrations in the plants (0.60 ± 0.26 in culms and 0.99 ± 0.50% in rhizomes), very high carbon to nitrogen ratios (49 ± 20:1) and nitrogen fixation in the rhizosphere explaining only about half of the plants’ nitrogen, papyrus is a likely net sink for nitrogen supplied from the lake's increasingly cultivated watershed. Despite this role, clearance of papyrus in favor of agriculture partly explains the reductions in the area of papyrus within the lake basin from 48 km2 in the late 1960s to 14 km2 in 1995.  相似文献

The study on the population status and human impacts on the endemic and endangered Swayne’s hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus swaynei) was carried out in Nechisar Plains, Nechisar National Park, between 2009 and 2010. Direct and total count methods were applied in the population census. Data collected since 1967 were also examined to indicate trends of Swayne’s hartebeest populations and their translocation status. In eight illegal Guji Oromo settlements, a total of 134 household samples were identified for group discussion and interview. A trend on livestock population was carried out. The total count of Swayne’s hartebeest was 12, 11 and 12 during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd counts, respectively. The population has been decreasing and nowadays only 12 individuals remain. Most respondents had a negative attitude towards conservation areas. The increase in livestock population from 1985 to 1996 was 47.8%. It also increased by 49.9% and 56.5% during 2006 and 2010, respectively. There were 12,531 heads of livestock that depended on the grass plains illegally. Overstocking rate of livestock, illegal resource exploitation and loss of wildlife habitat were the major problems encountered. Active measures have to be implemented to control the human impact and safeguard the future of Swayne’s hartebeest.  相似文献

The effects of concentrate energy source on feed intake and rumen fermentation parameters of lactating dairy cattle, offered one of three grass silages differing in fermentation and intake characteristics, were evaluated in a partially balanced changeover design experiment involving four rumen fistulated dairy cows. Three silages were harvested using different management practices prior to and at ensiling. Silages A and C and silage B were harvested from primary or secondary regrowths either untreated or treated with a bacterial inoculant. For silages A, B and C, dry matter (DM) concentrations were 334, 197 and 183 g/kg (S.E. 3.1), pH values 4.00, 4.79 and 4.80 (S.E. 0.042) and ammonia nitrogen (N) concentrations were 123, 319 and 295 g/kg total N (S.E. 20.0), respectively. Two concentrates were formulated to contain similar crude protein, effective rumen degradable protein, digestible undegradable protein and metabolisable energy concentrations but using different carbohydrate sources to achieve a wide range of starch concentrations. For the low and high starch concentrates starch concentrations were 17 and 304 g/kg DM and acid detergent fibre concentrations were 170 and 80 g/kg DM, respectively. The silages were offered ad libitum, supplemented with 10 kg fresh concentrate daily. For silages A, B and C, DM intakes were 10.9, 7.2 and 8.6 kg/day and concentrate energy sources did not alter (P>0.05) intake. Increasing the level of starch in the concentrate decreased the molar concentration of acetate (P<0.05) and tended to increase the molar concentration of propionate (P<0.1). Silage type altered the molar concentration of acetate (P<0.01) and the acetate:propionate ratio (P<0.05). There were no silagetype×concentrate interactions (P>0.05) on silage intake or rumen fermentation parameters. It is concluded that when concentrate and silage form equal proportions of the diet, the composition of the silage has an over-riding influence on rumen fermentation parameters. Furthermore, the changes in milk fat concentration, observed in a concurrent production study, due to changes in silage and concentrate types can be accounted for by changes in the ratio of lipogenic to glucogenic precursors in the rumen fluid.  相似文献

The voluntary intake, digestibility and mean retention time of six temperate forages differing in their chemical composition by 12 adult castrated male Scottish blackface sheep, aged 15 months, and fibre-producing castrated male goats, aged 27 months, and of similar live weight, 40 kg, were described. The creation of a range of chemical compositions was effected through the use of barley straw, and a low- and high-digestibility hay, and the use of ammonia treatment of these forages. A wide range of voluntary intakes (42–78 g DM/kg W0.75/day), digestibility of dry matter (0.46–0.60) and mean retention times of undigested residues (36–72 h) was achieved through feeding the six forages. Across all the forages fibre-producing goats had higher voluntary intakes, expressed on a metabolic live weight basis, and lower digestibility values than sheep, whereas the mean retention time of the undigested residues was similar for the two species. Within forages goats selected a diet of potentially higher nutritive value, as predicted from chemical composition, with a smaller particle size than sheep. It was concluded that the differences in intake and digestion of temperate forages between sheep and fibre-producing goats are broadly similar to those observed in other experiments between sheep and goats ingesting tropical forages.  相似文献

We hypothesized that increased feeding frequency in captive harbor seals would increase nutrient loads and thus reduce retention time and the digestive efficiency of natural prey. We measured daily feed intake and excretion during 6 feeding trials and fed herring (49% lipid), pollock (22% lipid) or an equal mix of each diet over 24 months. Animals were accustomed to feeding at either high or low frequency. Body mass and intake did not vary with season. Although mean retention times were similar between diets and feeding frequencies, solute and particulate digesta markers separated at high feeding frequency. Consistent dry matter digestibility resulted in greater gut fill from pollock than from herring. Digestible energy intakes from pollock were approximately 25% greater than from either herring or the mixed diet. Lipid digestibility of herring declined from 90% to 50% when lipid intake exceeded 60 g kg–0.75 day–1. Our hypothesis of a trade-off between intake and digestion was not supported for protein but was supported for lipid. Results of this study imply that a flexible digestive system for harbor seals can compensate for ingesting prey of lower energy density by increasing gut fill and enhancing protein and lipid assimilation, to sustain digestible energy intake.Abbreviations DM dry matter - DEI digestible energy intake - DIT diet-induced thermogenesis - FF feeding frequency - MRT mean retention time Communicated by: G. Bandicoots are opportunistic omnivores that feed on invertebrates, fungi and both epigeal and hypogeal plant parts. We examined the performance of the digestive tract of the long-nosed bandicoot (Perameles nasuta) in terms of intake and total digestibility, patterns of excretion of inert digesta markers, and likely sites of digesta retention, on two diets designed to mimic part of their natural plant and insect diets. On the insect diet (mealworm larvae), bandicoots virtually maintained body mass at a digestible energy intake of 511 kJ · kg-0.75 · day-1 and were in strongly positive nitrogen balance. In contrast, on the plant diet (shredded sweet potato), bandicoots ate only one-third as much digestible energy, lost 7% body mass, and were in negative nitrogen balance. Mean retention times of two particle markers on the plant diet (27.5 and 27.0 h) were more than double those on the insect diet (12.4 and 11.2 h), and on both diets the mean retention time of the fluid digesta marker was greater than those of the particle markers, indicating consistent selective retention of fluid digesta in the gut. It was seen radiographically than in mealwormfed bandicoots major sites of digesta retention were the distal colon and rectum, whereas in the sweet potato-fed animals the caecum and proximal colon were principal sites. It was concluded that retention of plant material in the caecum and proximal colon (the main sites of microbial digestion) and the preferential retention of fluid digesta (together with bacteria and small feed particles) in the caecum were important factors in the ability of bandicoots to switch between insect and plant foods, depending on relative availabilities, and thus to exploit nutritionally unpredictable environments.Abbreviations ADF acid-detergent fibre - bm body mass - Co-ED-TA cobalt-ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid - CWC cell wall constituents - DE digestable energy - dm dry matter - EUN endogenous urinary nitrogen - ICP inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy - MFN metabolic faecal nitrogen - MRT mean retention time - NDF neutral-detergent fibre - ww wet weight  相似文献

The digestion of plant material in mammalian herbivores basically depends on the chemical and structural composition of the diet, the mean particle size to which the forage is processed, and the ingesta retention time. These different factors can be influenced by the animal, and they can presumably compensate for each other. The pygmy hippopotamus, a non-ruminating foregut fermenter, has longer mean retention times than ruminants; however hippos do not achieve higher (fibre) digestibilities on comparable diets, which could be due to ineffective mastication. We performed feeding trials with six pygmy hippos (Hexaprotodon liberiensis) and six banteng cattle (Bos javanicus) on a grass diet. As predicted, both species achieved similar dry matter, organic matter, crude protein and gross energy digestibilities. However, neutral and acid detergent fibre digestibility was lower in pygmy hippos. Apparently, in these species, fibre digestibility was more influenced by particle size, which was larger in pygmy hippos compared to banteng, than by retention time. In spite of their higher relative food intake, the banteng in this study did not have greater relative gut fills than the hippos. Ruminants traditionally appear intake-limited when compared to equids, because feed particles above a certain size cannot leave the rumen. But when compared to nonruminating foregut fermenters, rumination seems to free foregut fermenters from an intrinsic food intake limitation. The higher energy intakes and metabolic rates in wild cattle compared to hippos could have life-history consequences, such as a higher relative reproductive rate.  相似文献

Twenty-four hour basal food and water intakes were recorded in Wistar rats. Diabetes was produced in a group of rats by injecting streptozotocin (STZ, 75 mg/kg, b.w., IP) and their post-diabetic basal food and water intakes were recorded. Noradrenaline (2 microg) and dopamine (2 microg) were injected separately into the nucleus accumbens through the implanted cannula in non-diabetic and diabetic animals and their 24 hr food and water intakes were recorded. Food and water intakes were also recorded following bilateral electrolytic lesions of nucleus accumbens in both the groups of rats. In diabetic rats, basal food and water intakes were significantly increased in comparison to basal intakes of non-diabetic rats. Following injection of noradrenaline, a significant increase in water intake but not food intake was seen in non-diabetic rats, whereas food and water intakes remained unchanged in diabetic rats. Following injection of dopamine, a significant increase in food and water intakes was observed in non-diabetic rats, whereas dopamine-induced increase in food intake was absent in diabetic rats. The bilateral lesions of nucleus accumbens resulted in a significant inhibition of food and water intakes in non-diabetic rats, whereas inhibition of water intake without change in food intake observed in diabetic rats. However, no difference was observed in the pattern of change in water intake following lesions or dopamine injections between non-diabetic and diabetic rats, whereas difference was observed for food intake. The results suggest that nucleus accumbens activity changes for food intake, but not for water intake in diabetes.  相似文献

In normal rats food and water intakes are associated in terms of time and quantity and their diurnal rhythms are synchronized. Intake behavior in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats (ID) with marked polyphagia and polydipsia and in diabetic rats with continuous insulin administration (IT) has been studied. The daily percentages of food and water intakes during the dark phase were lower in IT than in control rats (C), being even lower in ID rats. However, all three groups showed circadian rhythmicity in food intake, although with less amplitude in the ID and IT animals compared to the C ones. A loss of the normal circadian rhythm of water intake was observed in the ID rats and although the insulin administration recovered circadian rhythmicity, it did not restore the temporal relations between food and water intakes. These results may indicate that the circadian pattern of water intake is more influenced by insulin than food intake. The daily pattern of this hormone may play an important role in the circadian modulation of the homeostatic mechanisms integrating both intake behaviors.  相似文献

Papyrus wetlands around Lake Victoria, East Africa play an important role in the nutrient flows from the catchment to the lake. A dynamic model for nitrogen cycling was constructed to understand the processes contributing to nitrogen retention in the wetland and to evaluate the effects of papyrus harvesting on the nitrogen absorption capacity of the wetlands. The model had four layers: papyrus mat, water, sludge and sediment. Papyrus growth was modelled as the difference between nitrogen uptake and loss. Nitrogen uptake was modelled with a logistic equation combined with a Monod-type nitrogen limitation. Nitrogen compartments were papyrus plants, organic material in the floating mat; and total ammonia, nitrate and organic nitrogen in the water, sludge and sediment. Apart from the uptake and decay rates of the papyrus, the model included sloughing and settling of mat material into the water, mineralization of organic matter, and nitrification and diffusion of dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Literature data and field measurements were used for parameterization. The model was calibrated with data from Kirinya wetland in Jinja, Uganda which receives effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The model simulated realistic concentrations of dissolved nitrogen with a stable biomass density of papyrus and predicted accumulation of organic sludge in the wetland. Assuming that this sludge is not washed out of the wetland, the overall nitrogen retention of the wetland over a three-year period was 21.5 g N m−2 year−1 or about 25% of input. Harvesting 10, 20 and 30% of the papyrus biomass per year increased nitrogen retention capacity of the wetland to 32.3, 36.8 and 38.1 g m−2 year−1, respectively. Although the nutrient flows estimated by the model are within the ranges found in other papyrus wetlands, the model could be improved with regard to the dynamics of detrital nitrogen. Actual net retention of nitrogen in the sludge is likely to be lower than 21.5 g N m−2 year−1 because of flushing out of the sludge to the lake during the rainy season.  相似文献
