Summary To reveal the effect of photoperiod on insects under low temperatures, dormant females of Chrysopa carnea were exposed for 3 months (November–January) to cold (7°±2.5°C) and to long- or short-day conditions (18L:6D or 12L:12D). They were thereafter activated under short-day conditions at 25°C.The samples differed considerably in the incidence of ovipositing females, duration of pre- and post-oviposition period, and fecundity. All parameters evidenced a considerably higher reproductive activity of insects chilled under short-day conditions. It was thus confirmed that adults of C. carnea perceive photoperiod at cold. The action of short photoperiod at cold does not impair the subsequent oviposition; by contrast it promotes future reproduction, apparently also due to photoperiod changes. Development of the parasitoid Habrobracon hebetor (Say) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) at low temperatures was determined to identify rearing conditions that might result in adults that were in reproductive diapause. Diapausing adults would be expected to survive cold storage longer than nondiapausing adults for use in biological control programs. Only a few eggs were found in the ovaries when H. hebetor females were reared during the immature stages at 17.5 and 20°C with a 16-h photoperiod, and the ovaries were poorly developed and contained no eggs when females were reared with a 10-h photoperiod in these low temperatures. Rearing H. hebetor at 17.5 and 20°C did not result in diapause of immature stages, but did appear to result in possible adult reproductive diapause when the immature stages were reared with a 10-h photoperiod. Females reared during the immature stages at 17.5°C with a10-h photoperiod lived longer and took longer to lay their first eggs and to lay 50% of their eggs than those females reared at 17.5°C with a16-h photoperiod. Females reared during the immature stages at 20°C with a10-h photoperiod took longer to lay their first eggs and to lay 50% of their eggs, and they had a lower respiration rate, than those females reared at 20°C with a16-h photoperiod. Females that were reared in conditions that appeared to induce reproductive diapause resumed oviposition and their respiration rate increased soon after being transferred to a higher temperature (27.5°C). Thus, females reared at a 10-h photoperiod at 17.5 and 20°C appear to enter reproductive diapause.  相似文献

A rapid cold hardening response was studied in females and males of the olive fruit fly Bactrocera (Dacus) oleae. When laboratory-reared females and males were transferred and maintained from the rearing temperature of 24 °C for 2 h to –6.5 °C approximately 5% survived. However, conditioning of both females and males for 2 h at various temperatures from 0 to 10 °C before their exposure for 2 h to –6.5 °C increased survival to 80 to 92%. A similar rapid cold hardening response in both females and males was also induced through gradual cooling of the flies at a rate of approximately 0.4 °C per min. The rapid increase in cold tolerance after prior conditioning of the flies to low temperatures, was rapidly lost when they returned to a higher temperature of 24 °C. In the field, in late February and early March, females and males were capable of a rapid cold hardening response. After exposure to the critical temperature they suffered a high mortality when tested in the afternoon and low mortality early in the morning on consecutive days, probably because of differences in the prevailing field temperatures a few hours before testing. This plasticity of cold tolerance gained through rapid cold hardening may allow the flies to survive during periods of the year with great fluctuation in circadian temperatures.  相似文献

Development, reproduction and population growth of Thrips setosus Moulton (Thysanoptera, Thripidae), reared on a leaf of kidney bean, was studied under six different constant temperatures, and the effect on reproduction of short photoperiod during immature stages was examined. Survival rates from hatch to adult were more than 67.5% at temperatures between 17.5 and 27.5 °C, but less than 55% at 30 °C. Developmental rates increased linearly as rearing temperature increased. A total of 181.1 degree-days, above a developmental zero of 12.5 °C, were required to complete development from egg to adult oviposition. These data were related to records of field temperatures in Kurashiki in western Japan, and an estimate produced that, under outdoor conditions, a maximum of between seven and 12 generations could have developed annually between 1990 and 1999. There were no significant differences in mean adult longevity and mean fecundity among three temperatures (20, 22.5 and 25 °C). The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) was 0.1997 at 25 °C. Reproductive diapause was induced by a photoperiod less than 12 h at 20 °C.  相似文献

Stethorus japonicusKamiya (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an indigenous ladybird beetle in Japan, which feeds on many spider mite species. We evaluated the development, survivorship and life-history parameters of this lady beetle on a diet of eggs of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (red form) (Acari: Tetranychidae). In addition, the effect of short photoperiod on its reproduction was assessed. Survival rates from egg to adult were more than 71% at temperatures between 17.5 and 30 °C. The highest immature mortality was 100% at 35 °C followed by 76% at 15 °C and 52% at 32.5 °C. The lower threshold temperature for development from egg to egg-laying adult was 13.0 °C and the thermal constant was calculated as 238.7° days. Based on these data, the maximum number of generations that could complete development in a year under field conditions in Ibaraki, central Japan, would be between five and seven. The intrinsic rates of natural increase (rm) were 0.093 at 20 °C, 0.156 at 25 °C and 0.241 at 30 °C. Reproductive diapause was induced at photoperiods with light phases shorter than 13 h at 18 °C.  相似文献

The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata is a new, invasive pest of Platanus trees in China. Although C. ciliata is often subjected to acute low temperatures in early winter and spring in northern and eastern China, the cold tolerance of C. ciliata has not been well studied. The objectives of this study were to determine whether adults of C. ciliata are capable of rapid cold hardening (RCH), and to compare the benefits of RCH vs. cold acclimation (ACC) in the laboratory. When the adult females incubated at 26 °C were transferred directly to the discriminating temperature (−12 °C) for 2 h, survival was only 22%. However, exposure to 0 °C for 4 h before transfer to −12 °C for 2 h induced RCH, i.e., increased survival to 68%. RCH could also be induced by gradual cooling of the insects at rates between 0.1 and 0.25 °C min−1. The protection against cold shock obtained through RCH at 0 °C for 4 h was lost within 1 h if the adults were returned to 26 °C before exposure to −12 °C. Survival at both −12 and −5 °C was greater for RCH-treated than for ACC-treated adults (for ACC, adults were kept at 15 °C for 5 days), and the lethal temperature (2 h exposure) was lower for RCH-treated than for ACC-treated adults. The results suggest that RCH may help C. ciliata survive the acute low temperatures that often occur in early winter and early spring in northern and eastern China.  相似文献

An age-specific life table for the chicken miteDermanyssus gallinae (DeGeer, 1778) was based on various observations carried out at 25°C. The generation time was calculated to be 16.8 days; the intrinsic rate of natural increase was 0.12 per day, and the net reproductive rate was 7.2. A nonlinear function was found satisfactory to describe the developmental rate of the different immature lifestages at temperatures below 40°C. The stage-specific survival of the immature life-stages was generally high between 10 and 37°C, but decreased quickly outside this temperature range. Most of the eggs were laid during the first three weeks of the adult life. The proportion of surviving females rapidly decreases after moulting to the adult stage. At a temperature of 30°C, the highest number of eggs (3 eggs per day) was laid.  相似文献

The effect of four prediapause temperatures (18, 22, 26 and 30°C) on the photoperiodic response of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), was studied under controlled conditions. The highest rates of diapause were recorded, for all day-lengths, at temperatures of 22 and 26°C while relatively lower rates of diapause were elicited at 18 and 30°C. The same trend was demonstrated by projecting the values of the critical photoperiod which induces 50% diapause (=CPhP50) over the prediapause temperature. The change in diapause incidence as a function of photoperiod, at all prediapause temperatures, exhibited a response characteristic of long-day insects, i.e. high rates of diapause at short days (12–13.5 h) and a decrease in diapause incidence at long days (14–15 h). The results for temperatures 22, 26 and 30°C support the view that lower prediapause temperatures enhance diapause induction, at a give photoperiod, while higher temperatures tend to avert or diminish the process. On the other hand, the low rates of diapause obtained at 18°C contradict this view. Nevertheless, high correlation was found between the laboratory evidence and field data, indicating the adaptability of the Israeli codling moth to subtropical climate.  相似文献

Females of the migrant skipper, Parnara guttata guttata, that are reared under lower temperatures lay smaller eggs. The adaptive significance of egg size plasticity in response to temperature is unknown in this species. We suggest, based on the following experimental results, that P. g. guttata uses temperature as an indirect cue to predict the host condition (leaf toughness) of the next generation. First, larvae were reared under the typical conditions of temperature and photoperiod experienced during the immature stages in the first, second, and overwintering (third) generations (LD 16:8 at 25°C, LD 14:10 at 25°C and LD 14:10 at 20°C). Females reared under LD14:10 at 20°C produced more, smaller eggs than those reared under LD14:10 and LD16:8 at 25°C. Secondly, survival rates of first instar larvae derived from females reared under the three photoperiod/temperature treatments were measured on young soft rice leaves (soft), or tough, old rice leaves (tough). Survival rates of hatchlings reared on soft and tough leaves did not differ when females were reared under LD16:8 and LD14:10 at 25°C. However, hatchling survival was significantly higher on soft than on tough leaves when females were reared under LD14:10 at 20°C. Thirdly, we found that egg size plasticity in response to temperature in P. g. guttata may be a threshold response. Temperatures below 20°C experienced during the immature stages may be effective for production of smaller and more eggs in the overwintering generation of P. g. guttata.  相似文献

Development and fecundity of Scymnus levaillanti(Mulsant) were recorded at fiveconstant temperatures ranging from 15 to 35 ± 1 °C in 5 °C increments, 60 ± 5% RHand 16 h of artificial light (5000 Lux). Developmentaltime (egg to adult) of S. levaillantisignificantly decreased with increasing temperatures,ranging from 63.9 days at 15 °C to 11.1 days at35 °C. Development from egg to adult required305.2 DD above a developmental threshold estimated as11.7 °C. Oviposition periods lasted 86.5, 76.1,47.2, and 31.5 days at 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C,respectively. No eggs were deposited at 15 °C.Higher temperatures resulted in shorter generationtimes (TO) and in decreased net reproductiverates (RO) of the coccinellid. S.levaillanti kept at 30 °C produced 0.151females/female/day, the highest per capita rate ofpopulation growth (rm). The `functional response'of larvae and adults of S. levaillanti matcheswell that described by Holling (1959) as Type 2.Daily number of eggs deposited by females increased toa plateau with increasing prey density. Summary The strain of Cothonaspis boulardi originating from a field collection at Guadeloupe (16° lat. N-West Indies) exhibits a facultative diapause that occurs at the final larval instar. The diapause was induced by low temperature (17.5° C) and was inhibited at 25° C. Diapause was independent of photoperiod. The termination of diapause was hastened in about 10 days by exposing larvae to a temperature of 25° C. Although a succession of sufficient cold days for diapause occurs only rarely in the collection area (Petit-Bourg), at higher elevations within 20 km of Petit-Bourg conditions that could induce diapause occur annually.This study is supported by research grant of C.N.R.S. Effects of photoperiod and cold exposure on diapause termination, post-diapause development and reproduction in Loxostege sticticalis were examined. Larvae were reared at diapause inducing condition (22 °C, L:D 12:12) consistently or transferred to long day photoperiod (L:D 16:8) and darkness (L:D 0:24) respectively, after entering into diapause. Diapause was terminated in approximately 40% of the larvae after 36 days, and no significant differences were observed between photoperiods, suggesting larval diapause was terminated spontaneously without being induced by photoperiods. Cold exposure significantly hastened diapause termination. The diapause termination incidence increased significantly with peaks of 98% at both 5 °C and 0 °C exposure for 30 days, as compared to 42% in controls not exposed to cold, while the mortality and number of days required for diapause termination decreased dramatically. The optimal low temperature exposure periods under 5 °C or 0 °C were 20 days and 30 days, showing a higher termination incidence and shorter time for diapause termination. This suggests that the low temperatures in winter play an important role in diapause termination under natural conditions. The threshold temperatures for post-diapause development in prepupae and pupae were 9.13 °C and 10.60 °C respectively, with corresponding accumulations of 125 and 200 degree-days. Adults that experienced larval diapause significantly delayed their first oviposition, oviposition period was prolonged, and the lifetime number of eggs laid was decreased, however both males and females have significantly longer longevity. The field validation of diapause termination, the degree-days model, and the relationship between diapause and migration in L. sticticalis were also discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was todetermine the biology and reproductivepotential of Euseius scutalis(Athias-Henriot) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) atvarious temperatures. These data are of valuein relation to mass rearing and the developmentof population dynamics models. The developmenttime, survival and fecundity of E.scutalis were determined at 20, 25 and30 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 10% RH and 16:8photoperiod. Total development times of E.scutalis were 6.7, 4.9 and 4.2 days at 20, 25and 30 ± 1 °C, respectively, using adiet of all life stages of the spider mite Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acari:Tetranychidae). In general, preoviposition andpostoviposition periods of E. scutaliswere shortened as temperature increased, butthe oviposition period was longer at 25 °C than at 20 and 30 °C. Theshortest survival time of E. scutalis, at30 °C, was 10.1 days, followed by 23.7days and 28.6 days at 20 and 25 °C,respectively. Mated females laid on average1.1, 1.4 and 1.7 eggs per female per day and21.5, 39.7 and 17.1 eggs over their entire lifetime at 20, 25 and 30 °C, respectively.The sex ratios of E. scutalis were2.11/1, 2.24/1 and 2.11/1 female/male at 20, 25and 30 °C, respectively. The intrinsicrate of natural increase (r m) increasedwith rising temperatures from 0.166 at 20 °C to 0.295 females/female/day at 30 °C. The net reproductive rate (R 0)was highest at 25 °C (26.03females/female) and lowest at 30 °C(12.95 females/female). Heat production by means of oxygen consumptionVo2 (at Ta = 6° C, 25° C, 30° C, and 32° C) and non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) were studied in individuals of a diurnal rodent (Rhabdomys pumilio) and a nocturnal rodent (Praomys natalensis). The studied mice were acclimated to cold at Ta=8°C with a photoperiod of LD 12:12. On the otherhand specimens of these two species were acclimated at Ta=25°C with a long scotophase LD8:16. The results were compared with a control group (Ta=25° C, LD 12:12) and winter acclimatized individuals of both species.Vo2 in cold acclimated mice of both species was significantly increased when compared to the control group and was even higher than the winter acclimatized group when measured below the lower critical temperature. Long scotophase acclimated mice of both species also increased their oxygen consumption significantly when compared to the control group. NST was significantly increased in long scotophase acclimated mice from both species when compared to the control group. The results of this study indicate that the effects of acclimation to long scotophase are similar to those of cold acclimation. As changes in photoperiod are regular, it may be assumed that heat production mechanisms in acclimatization to winter will respond to changes in photoperiodicity.Present address: University of Haifa, Oranim, P.O.   • 1 There is confusion in the literature concerning a possible reproductive diapause in the adult white pine weevil Pissodes strobi.
  • 2 We evaluated the effects of temperature, photoperiod, feeding substrate and mating status on the sexual maturation and oviposition of female white pine weevils.
  • 3 Less than 30% of female P. strobi became sexually mature and laid eggs without experiencing dormancy under a temperature regime of 2 °C for 4 weeks.
  • 4 Among the females that experienced a cold temperature treatment after emergence, 80% laid eggs after dormancy when exposed to a long‐day (LD 16 : 8 h) photoperiod and 17.6% laid eggs when exposed to a short‐day (LD 8 : 16 h) photoperiod.

This study investigated the effect of temperature on the development and overwintering capacity of the pupal parasitoid, Diadromus pulchellus Wesmael (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), a candidate classical biological control agent against leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Acrolepiidae) in Canada. It was estimated that 256.4 day-degrees, above a lower threshold temperature of 7.3°C, were required for D. pulchellus to complete development, from egg to adult eclosion. Laboratory and field experiments on the immature and mature parasitoids indicated that D. pulchellus overwinters primarily, if not exclusively, in the adult stage. Only adults were able to survive an entire winter under natural outdoor conditions in central Europe. Immature parasitoids developing inside their pupal hosts were capable of withstanding short periods of temperatures as low as −5°C or −10°C, but even much higher temperatures were lethal if sustained for several weeks. Among adults, females demonstrated greater cold hardiness than males. The LTime50 at −12°C, simulating winter temperatures without snow cover, was 4–5 and 6–7 days for males and females, respectively. The LTime50 at −4°C, simulating winter temperatures beneath an insulating snow layer, was 1–2 and 2–3 weeks for males and females, respectively, with maximum survival of eight weeks. It is likely that survival would be even greater in a natural environment where the parasitoids could select optimal overwintering sites and have the option to feed when temperatures rise enough to permit activity. Based on these results, D. pulchellus is expected to survive winters in the targeted release areas of Ontario and Quebec.  相似文献

The development times and survival of immature stages in rockwool and the fecundity and longevity of adult Scatella stagnalis were determined and stage-specific life-tables constructed for the species at constant 20 and 25 °C and at a fluctuating temperature (23–34 °C, mean 28.5 °C). Development time from egg to adult decreased with temperature, being 15.9±0.1 days at 20 °C, 11.4±0.1 days at 25 °C and 10.1±0.2 days at fluctuating temperature with mean of 28.5 °C. The lower threshold for egg-to-adult development was 6.4±2.7 °C and the total quantity of thermal energy required to complete development was 212.8±.0 °C. The proportion of females in two populations studied was 0.521. High temperature increased the mortality of pupae from 7% (20 °C) and 10% (25 °C) to 29% at 28.5 °C. At 25 °C, female longevity was 15.5±0.7 days and fecundity 315±19 eggs/female (20.4 eggs/female/day). Males lived for 22.0±1.1 days. At constant 25 °C, the net reproductive rate was 126.1 female eggs/female, generation time was 18.4 days, the doubling time of the population 5.3 days, and the intrinsic rate of increase (r m) 0.263 day–1.  相似文献

The course of diapause induction as well as of diapause termination infemales of the predatory mite Euseius (Amblyseius)finlandicus Oudemans (Acari: Phytoseiidae) in Northern Greece wasdetermined by transferring females during winter and early spring from peachtrees to a short day (LD 8:16) or a long day (LD 16:8) photoperiod both at 20°C. The first diapause females were found in mid September andby the first week of October all the females were in diapause. The mean numberof days required for diapause termination under the short day photoperiod LD8:16 was gradually reduced from 93.7 days in the beginning of October to lessthan 20 days in mid February and early March. Under the long day photoperiod ofLD 16:8 diapause was terminated in less than 20 days irrespective of the dateof collection. These results indicate that by mid February photoperiodicsensitivity of females was lost and diapause was terminated. However, femaleswere found in their overwintering sites until the second half of March,probablybecause of the prevailing relatively low temperatures and lack of adequatefood.  相似文献

C. rosaceana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) virgin females initiated calling in the first scotophase following emergence at both 15° and 20°C constant temperature under a 16L:8D photoperiod. As females aged, the onset of calling occurred much earlier, and the time spent calling increased significantly at both temperature conditions. For a given age, the onset of calling occurred significantly earlier at 15°C than at 20°C, but the duration of calling did not vary with temperature. Similar results were obtained under warm and cold thermocycles that simulated natural conditions prevailing during the summer and fall flight periods. A comparison of the degree of attractancy of different-aged females (0, 3, and 5 days old) in the field showed that the attractiveness of 0-day-old females relative to that of 3-day old females did not vary between flights. However, compared to day-5 females, the relative attractiveness of 0- and 3-day-old females was greater in the summer than in the fall flights. The potential adaptative value of these changes for seasonal mating success are discussed.  相似文献

Development, survival and reproduction of Euseius finlandicus Oudemans were studied at seven constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 27, 30, 32 and 34°C) in the laboratory. Within the temperature range tested, developmental period from egg to adult varied from 148 to 360.5h and 133.7 to 336.5h for females and males, respectively. The lower thermal threshold for immature development for females and males was 8.9 and 6.4°C, respectively. Survival during immature development exceeded 90% at all the temperatures from 15 to 32°C, but at 34°C an abrupt decline was recorded. Female longevity decreased gradually from 82.7d at 15°C to 12.2 d at 34°C. The mean generation time ranged from 44.3d at 15°C to 15.9d at 32°C. The highest r m value (0.2817) was obtained at 30°C and the lowest at 15°C (0.0976). Temperatures above 30°C had an adverse effect on population increase.  相似文献
