The intertidal brown macroalga Fucus vesiculosus L. acclimates its defense against reactive oxygen in response to both (1) growth at different temperatures in laboratory culture and (2) seasonal changes in environmental conditions. Fucus vesiculosus was grown in seawater at 0° C, 20° C, and at 0° C with a 3-h daily emersion at −10° C. Algae grown at low temperature, both with and without freezing, produced less reactive oxygen after severe freezing stress than those grown at 20° C. These differences were correlated with growth temperature-induced changes in activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase, and ascorbate peroxidase. The contents of tocopherols increased with increased cultivation temperature, whereas the activity of catalase and the content of glutathione and ascorbate did not change. Growth at 0° C increased the resistance of photosynthesis to freezing and reduced photoinhibition in high light at 5° C; the latter effect was further increased in algae subject to daily freezing. These data suggest that elevated activity of reactive oxygen scavenging enzymes, especially SOD, increases the resistance to photoinhibition, at least at low temperature, as well as being important for freezing tolerance. Seasonal changes in reactive oxygen metabolism showed a similar pattern to those elicited by temperature in laboratory culture. Summer samples had lower activities of most reactive oxygen scavenging enzymes than algae collected in autumn and winter when water temperatures were lower. In contrast to the laboratory experiments, ascorbate content did change and was lower during the winter than summer, whereas the content of glutathione was not influenced by season. Overall, the data not only indicate that temperature plays an important role in the regulation of stress tolerance and reactive oxygen metabolism but also suggest that other factors are also involved.  相似文献

The viability of three species of Fusarium pathogenic to winter cereals was differently affected by temperature. F. culmorum survived in vitro in soil for 4 months at 8, 20 and 30 °C, the number of colony forming units (CFU) recorded at these temperatures after incubation being 125, 185 and 624 % respectively when compared with the number present at the beginning of the experiment. F. avenaceum and F. heterosporum barely survived at 8 °C after incubation for 4 months but at 20 °C the numbers of CFU were 314 and 380 % respectively, while at 30 °C the corresponding number tor each of these species was 200 %.
At natural soil temperatures in winter, the number of CFU of F. culmorum after 4.5 months decreased to 60, 70 and 87 % of the number present at the beginning of this experiment when infested soil was buried at depths of 7–10, 15—20 and 30 cm respectively. In the upper soil layer where winter temperatures were lowest, survival of F. avenaceum and F. heterosporum did not occur. Survival rates for these two species at a depth of 15—20 cm were 20 and 5 % respectively. In the deepest layer of soil (30 cm) survival of these two species was 30 % for F. avenaceum and 10 % for F. heterosporum of the number present at the beginning of this experiment.
These results demonstrate that during the early spring stages of growth of winter wheat, inoculum of F. culmorum , unlike that of F. avenaceum and F. heterosporum , is also a source of infection in the top soil layer in our climatic conditions.  相似文献

In Chile, the demand of edible seaweeds has increased during recent years and Callophyllis variegata is one of the most demanded species. This study summarizes information on phenology, aspects, in vitro culture and vegetative propagation methods for Callophyllis. Results indicate that spore production occurs mainly during winter, and recruitment of new plants appear in nature in the spring. Culture studies indicate that spores presented higher germination and growth rates at 8° C and 10 to 12 μmol m−2 s−1. Furthermore, these results indicate that this species presents a high potential for regeneration from its holdfast. The manipulation of temperature, light and culture medium enhances the regeneration process and growth of Callophyllis in the laboratory.  相似文献

Resource partitioning in two congeneric sparids, pandora Pagellus erythrinus and axillary seabream Pagellus acarne, was investigated using stomach content analysis integrated with data on stable isotopes (δ(15) N and δ(13) C). The study was carried out on coastal muddy bottoms in the Gulf of Castellammare (southern Tyrrhenian Sea, western Mediterranean Sea) in seasons (autumn, November 2004; winter, March 2005; spring, early June 2005), at depths between 50 and 100 m. Stomach content analysis suggested low trophic niche overlap between the two species. Pagellus erythrinus mainly preyed on strictly benthic organisms (polychaetes, brachyuran crabs and benthic crustaceans). Although it consumed benthic prey, P. acarne preferred suprabenthic prey such as peracarid crustaceans from the benthic boundary layer a few metres above the bottom. The two species showed different isotopic values, with P. erythrinus exhibiting higher δ(15) N and more enriched δ(13) C than P. acarne, in accordance with its marked benthic behaviour and high predation on carnivore polychaetes. Significant temporal variability in both diet and isotopic values caused trophic differences between the two species. The autumn and winter diet differed from the spring diet and the trophic levels of both species increased from autumn and winter to spring, in accordance with variations in food availability and changes in prey δ(15) N and δ(13) C. These temporal variations may be linked to an increase in energy requirements for reproduction, together with the differing availability of preferred prey throughout the year. Significantly, lower δ(13) C was recorded in fishes collected in winter (March), suggesting the influence of river inputs as a source of particulate organic matter in this zone after the flooding season. In conclusion, these sympatric congeneric fish species displayed clear food partitioning throughout the temporal scale analysed.  相似文献

Exposed rocky shores in Hong Kong are dominated at mid-tidal levels by a broad band of the mytilid Septifer virgatus. A 48-month study of a population inhabiting the shores at Cape d'Aguilar has been undertaken. The species matures at a shell length of ≅ 15 mm, about one year after recruitment. Septifer virgatus is dioecious with a slight, but insignificant, female bias overall. There is, however, a significant juvenile male bias. Generally, most adult individuals remain mature year round, although spawning is limited to two periods in spring (February to March) and autumn (September to December) with subsequent recruitment into the adult population. The species lives for ≅ 4–5 years, although older individuals, possibly up to 12 years of age and with a maximum recorded shell length of 65 mm, occur as solitary individuals lower down the shore. Mortality in winter mainly affects newly recruited juveniles. A heavy mortality of adults in summer is thought to be related to high rock temperatures at midday (≅ 50°C), concurrent with low spring tides.
The life-history tactics and sexual strategy of Septifer virgatus can be correlated with seasonal changes in hydrography. There are a number of similarities with other local mytilids, notably the dioecious condition and the bimodal pattern of spawning and recruitment. Such similarities are discussed in relation to the habitats occupied by these species.  相似文献

Spring is often the most suitable period for seedling establishment of temperate woodland species. Different physiological mechanisms resulting in spring emergence have evolved in seeds of such plants. The aim of this study was to determine the requirements for breaking dormancy and for seed germination of the European perennial spring geophyte Corydalis solida (Fumariaceae). Ripe seeds of C. solida contain an underdeveloped embryo, consisting of no more than a clump of cells. As a consequence, the embryo has to differentiate and grow to a critical length before germination can occur. In nature, seeds are dispersed in spring, while growth of the embryo starts in the autumn and continues in winter. Germination starts in late winter, immediately after embryo growth is completed, resulting in seedling emergence in the following spring. Experiments in controlled conditions showed that temperature is the main factor controlling dormancy and germination. Incubation at autumn temperatures (15/6 °C; 20/10 °C) for at least 8 weeks is required to initiate embryo growth, while a transfer to 5 °C is needed for completion of embryo growth and germination. Growth of the embryo of C. solida occurs at different temperatures over an extended period, a feature typical of temperate forest herbs. Our results indicate that the dormancy mechanism in seeds of C. solida is very similar to mechanisms in other Corydalis species studied thus far, suggesting that stasis in the dormancy trait has occurred.  相似文献

Seventy isolates of moulds and blue stain fungi ( Zygomycota and Deuteromycota ), isolated from discoloured outdoor softwood in Sweden, comprising of 27 different species, (the two largest genera Penicillium and Cladosporium ) were investigated for their linear growth at three different start-pH values (5, 7 and 9.5) at two temperatures (2°C and 24°C) on malt extract agar (MEA). At 24°C all isolates showed growth at all three start-pH values except for one isolate which did not grow at initial-pH 9.5. After 21 days at 2°C at the three start pH-values, only six isolates showed no growth indicating that 64 of the isolates were cold-tolerant (psychrotrophic). Of these 64 strains, 58 showed growth at an initial pH of 9.5. Lower pH optima at 2°C than at 24°C were found for most of the isolates. The reduction of the linear growth at initial pH 9.5 in relation to the growth at optimal pH was more pronounced (higher) at the low temperature.  相似文献

Several estimates of minimal energy requirements for yellowfin sole were made. Energy expenditures of 1.6, 4.1 and 8.3 cal g−1 day−1 were obtained from starvation weight loss, standard metabolism and maintenance ration procedures, respectively, at 6° C. The temperature effect on energy requirement was reflected in the Q 10 values for starvation weight loss (2.0), standard metabolism (6.3) and maintenance ration (6.5).
Both energy intake and weight of food were linearly related to, and good predictors of, laboratory growth. These relationships were used to estimate the food and energy intake necessary for yellowfin sole to achieve a year's growth in the natural environment. Based on a caloric value of 2.0 kcal g−1 of food (herring fillets), yellowfin would require 0.35 to 0.39% body weight day−1 at 3° C to achieve the mean growth rate exhibited in the Bering Sea. To achieve Gulf of Alaska growth rates at 5 to 6° C, yellowfin would require 0.63% body weight day−1. Based on a caloric value of 0.57 kcal g−1 of food (chopped octopus), yellowfin would require 0.83% body weight per day to achieve the Gulf of Alaska growth rate (6° C). These requirements based on the calorific value of herring fillets, which are three to five times higher than previous estimates of daily ration in this species, are probably conservative estimates since many of their prey species have a lower energy content.  相似文献

1. The effect of temperature on embryonic development was compared in four populations, two bisexual and two unisexual, of Ephoron shigae , including one each near the northern and southern periphery of the species range in Japan.
2. Eggs from every population were chilled at 4, 8 or 12 °C for diapause development after 50 days at 20 °C for pre-diapause development (experiment I). Some eggs hatched during chilling at 8 °C or 12 °C, whereas no eggs hatched at 4 °C. The rate of hatching in a given condition of chilling was higher for the eggs from warmer winter environments.
3. Chilling at 4 or 8 °C effectively facilitated diapause development. Chilling at 12 °C was, in general, not so effective, but relatively effective for the eggs from warmer winter environments.
4. Eggs were incubated at 8, 12, 15 or 20 °C after chilling at 4 °C to examine the effect of temperature on post-diapause development (experiment II). The eggs incubated at higher temperature after chilling hatched quicker and more synchronously and had higher hatching success.
5. The relationship between temperature and the days required for hatching after chilling was well described by the power function. There was no significant difference in the slope of the regression lines (i.e. temperature dependency) among local populations. However, a longer time was required for hatching at a given temperature for the population from the colder winter environment.
6. There was no detectable difference in the observed intraspecific variations between unisexual and bisexual populations.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption rates of three species of pleuronectids, the yellowtail flounder, Pleuronectes ferrugineus (Storer), the winter flounder, Pleuronectes americanus (Walbaum), and the American plaice, Hippoglossoides platessoides (Fabricius), were examined under simulated, land-based, aquaculture conditions. Routine oxygen consumption (ROC) rates for groups of each species were measured simultaneously using single-pass, flow-through respirometry. This study was conducted over three seasons at temperatures from 2°C to 14°C. An analysis of variance identified a significant interaction between temperature and species on the oxygen consumption rates of these flounder. The analysis indicated that at each temperature, ROC rates were significantly different among the three species (P < 0.05). A subsequent test of each species'ROC rate across the three temperatures indicated that both the yellowtail flounder and the winter flounder had significantly different ROC rates at each temperature experiment (P < 0.05). The ROC of yellowtail and winter flounder responded similarly to changes in experimental temperatures.  相似文献

The perennial springs at Gypsum Hill (GH) and Colour Peak (CP), situated at nearly 80°N on Axel Heiberg Island in the Canadian high Arctic, are one of the few known examples of cold springs in thick permafrost on Earth. The springs emanate from deep saline aquifers and discharge cold anoxic brines rich in both sulfide and sulfate. Grey-coloured microbial streamers form during the winter months in snow-covered regions of the GH spring run-off channels (−1.3°C to 6.9°C, ∼7.5% NaCl, 0–20 p.p.m. dissolved sulfide, 1 p.p.m. dissolved oxygen) but disappear during the Arctic summer. Culture- and molecular-based analyses of the 16S rRNA gene (FISH, DGGE and clone libraries) indicated that the streamers were uniquely dominated by chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing Thiomicrospira species . The streamers oxidized both sulfide and thiosulfate and fixed CO2 under in situ conditions and a Thiomicrospira strain isolated from the streamers also actively oxidized sulfide and thiosulfate and fixed CO2 under cold, saline conditions. Overall, the snow-covered spring channels appear to represent a unique polar saline microhabitat that protects and allows Thiomicrospira streamers to form and flourish via chemolithoautrophic, phototrophic-independent metabolism in a high Arctic winter environment characterized by air temperatures commonly below −40°C and with an annual average air temperature of −15°C. These results broaden our knowledge of the physical and chemical boundaries that define life on Earth and have astrobiological implications for the possibility of life existing under similar Martian conditions.  相似文献

Melanosome-aggregating responses to noradrenalin in winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanm Walbaum, manifest different in vitro temperature characteristics compared with such activity in sailfln molly, Poecilia velifera Regan. Winter flounder off St John's are adapted to cold ocean temperatures between − 1° C and + 15° C associated with the Labrador current, whilst sailfin molly is a tropical species adapted to temperatures up to about 30° C. The experimental data indicate that melanophores from these two species are physiologically adapted to function in contrasting thermal environments. Consequently, the optimum temperature for melanosome aggregation in winter flounder is approximately 20° C, and that of the tropical species approximately 40° C. Also, flounder melanophore In vitro responses are relatively uninfluenced by low temperatures, which drastically inhibit sailfin molly melanophore activity.  相似文献

Tetreutreptia pomquetensis McLachlan, Fritz et Seguel, a quadriflagellated euglenoid isolated from a shallow-water embayment of the southeastern Gulf of St. Lawrence, is a common winter species where habitats are ice covered for 4 to 5 months. Growth in culture, which was similar to that of many euryhaline species, was limited at normal seawater salinities to temperatures between ∼0° and 7° C, and the alga could not be maintained at 10° C; thus, it is a strict psychrophile. The maximum growth rate (μ≅ 0.35·days−1) was around 5° C and, given its size (∼100 μm length), high productivities are indicated. The major fatty acids (FAs) identified were 18:4ω3, 16:4ω3, 20:5ω3, and 16:0. The overall FA spectrum does not align closely to other euglenoids but may reflect more the low growth temperature. The presence of 18:5ω3 is unusual, as this FA had been known previously only from dinoflagellates and haptophytes. The two most abundant sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerols (SQDGs) had pairings of [18:4/16:0] and [18:4/18:4] and together constituted 80% of the total SQDGs. The latter pairing is unique, not having been previously recognized. The FA data support the hypothesis that the degree of unsaturation is indicative of low temperatures and membrane integrity.  相似文献

The cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringiBaly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a serious pest of crucifers in China, undergoing an imaginal summer and winter diapause in the soil. The effects of host plants on diapause incidence were tested in the beetle. The ratio of adults entering diapause was significantly low when they fed on the mature leaves of Chinese cabbage Shanghaiqin (Brassica chinesis var communis) than those feeding on Chinese cabbage Suzhouqin (Brassica chinesis var communis), radish (Raphanus sativus var longipinnatus) and stem mustard (Brassicajuncea vat tumida) at 25℃ combined with 13:11 (L: D) h. Fewer adults entered diapause on young leaves compared to physiologically aged and mature radish leaves at 25℃ combined with 13:11 (L: D) h. The effect of host plant species on diapause induction was also evident under continuously dark rearing conditions or at different photoperiods. These experimental results demonstrate that host plant mediation of diapause induction exists in the cabbage beetle. However, at temperatures ≤20℃ or photoperiods of 16:8 (L: D) h combined with 25℃, all individuals entered diapause regardless of the host plants, indicating that the effects of host plants on diapause induction could be expressed only within a limited range of temperatures and photoperiods.  相似文献

In previous studies with tropical plant species, low root zone temperature (RZT) induced boron (B) deficiency, but it is not known if the same response to RZT will be expressed in temperate species, like oilseed rape, that are more tolerant of low temperature. The present experiments investigated the effect of RZT (10 and 20°C) on oilseed rape ( Brassica napus L. cv. Hyola 42) response to B in solution culture, in summer and winter. Regardless of canopy growth conditions, low RZT (10°C) promoted the partitioning of shoot B to the actively growing leaves, especially when B supply was low. However, low RZT did not significantly alter net B uptake rates or plant biomass. Low RZT decreased the shoot-to-root ratio, countering the effects of low B which increased it, leading to a decreased demand for B in the shoot at low RZT. At low B supply, B-deficiency symptoms appeared later at 10 than at 20°C, corresponding with higher B concentrations in the youngest fully opened leaves (YOLs) at 10°C RZT. Thus 10°C RZT increased the tolerance to low B supply. As a result, it is concluded that the effect of decreasing RZT on the responses of the temperate species, oilseed rape, to low B supply depends on whether the low RZT is above or below the optimal root temperature for growth.  相似文献

Frost tolerance has been reported in the shoots of wild, tuberiferous potato species such as Solanum commersonii when the plants are grown in either field or controlled conditions. However, these plants can survive as underground tubers and avoid unfavorable environmental conditions altogether. As such, leaf growth and photosynthesis at low temperature may not be required for survival of the plants. In order to determine the temperature sensitivity of S. commersonii shoots, we examined leaf growth, development and photosynthesis in plants raised at 20/16°C (day/night). 12/9°C and 5/2°C. S. commersonii leaves grown at 5°C exhibited a marked decrease in leaf area and in total chlorophyll (Chl) content per leaf area when compared with leaves grown at 20°C. Furthermore, leaves grown at 5°C did not exhibit the expected decrease in either water content or susceptibility to low-temperature-induced photoinhibition that normally characterizes cold acclimation in frost-tolerant plants. Measurements of CO2-saturated O2 evolution showed that the photosynthetic apparatus of 5°C plants was functional, even though the efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry was reduced by growth at 5°C. A decrease in the resolution of the M-peak in the slow transients for Chl a fluorescence in leaves grown at 12 and 5°C and in all leaves exposed to high light at 5°C indicated that low temperature significantly affected processes on the reducing side of QA, the primary quinone electron acceptor in photosystem II. Thus S. commarsonii exhibits the characteristics of a plant that is limited by chilling temperatures. Although S. commersonii can tolerate light frosts, its sensitivity to chilling temperatures may result in shoot dieback in winter in its native habitat. The plants may avoid both chilling and freezing temperatures by overwintering as underground tubers.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The objective was to compare variations in egg hatching between the two species (interspecific variations) and between populations of the same species (intraspecific variations). There were significant interspecific, but not intraspecific, differences in female size, adult life-span, egg production, hatching success, incubation periods and hatching periods.
2. The optimum temperature for hatching success within the range 3.8–22.1°C in the laboratory and the range over which at least 50% of the eggs hatched were lower for Chloroperia tripunctata (Scopoli) (8.5°C, 4.2–17.3°C) than for Siphonoperla torrentium (Pictet) (12.8°C, 6.1–19.4°C). Few eggs hatched at 22.r°C.
3. The relationship between incubation period (d days) and water temperature (T°C) was given by: d=1219/T1.368 for S. torrentium , d=253/T0.459 for C. tripunctata . Both equations successfully predicted incubation periods for eggs placed in a stream. The period over which eggs hatched was much longer for C. tripunctata than for S. torrentium at all temperatures.
4. The shorter incubation period (at r>5.6°C) and shorter hatching period for S. torrentium ensure that larvae of this species are already growing when eggs of C. tripunctata start to hatch, but the prolonged hatching period of the latter species ensures a long period of larval recruitment to the population. These differences in egg hatching may reduce competition between the two closely-related species.  相似文献

Plasticity in growth rate may be driven by behavioural and physiological mechanisms. Although these underlying mechanisms have direct implications for the importance of ecological and physiological costs associated with rapid growth, the contribution of behaviour and physiology to temperature-mediated plasticity in growth rate has largely been neglected. We studied the temperature-dependence of growth rate and its underlying behavioural and physiological mechanisms in two congeneric damselfly species that differ in latitudinal distribution. Larvae were reared from the egg stage at three temperatures (17°C, 22°C and 27°C). Within each species, growth rates showed a quadratic response curve with an optimum at 22°C. Behaviour, as measured by food intake, and physiology, as measured by growth efficiency and heartbeat as proxy for metabolic rate, jointly contributed to this temperature-induced plasticity in growth rate. At each temperature, growth rates were higher in the northern species. In line with the few other studies that compared northern and southern populations, both an increased food uptake and growth efficiency caused this pattern. Together with previous studies that focused on the population level, our results tentatively suggest that not only the latitudinal patterns in growth rate but also the mechanistic basis are similar at the species and at the population level.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Newly-laid eggs of Coenagrion puella (L.) from a pond near Herzogenburg (Lower Austria) were kept at constant water temperatures (range c .3.5°C to c .28°C)in the laboratory. Hatching success varied with temperature; no eggs hatched below 12°C and nearly all hatched at c .l6°C. Hatching time decreased with increasing temperature and the relationship between the two variables within the range 12–28 °C was well described by a power law. The length of the hatching period was less than 12 days. Hatching times estimated from the power-law equations and those obtained in the field experiments were similar. Therefore both the hatching time and the length of the hatching period in the field could be estimated from the laboratory data for the range 12–28°C.
2. The maximum number of instars from egg to imago was 11; the average body length increment (mm) per moult was proportionately constant at c .26% and Dyar's rule was applicable. The interval between moults decreased with increasing temperature up to the seventh instar and the relationship between the two variables within the range 12–28°C was well described by a power law. The moulting interval for instars 8–11 ranged from 23 to 48 days and was relatively independent of temperature. No moulting occurred at temperatures below 12°C.
3. Larval growth was logistic in the laboratory and variations in mean logistic growth rate (range 0–2.5% length day−1) were related to mean temperature with no growth at temperatures <12°C. Larval growth rates in pond experiments were similar to those estimated from laboratory data, and therefore the regression equations obtained from the laboratory experiments are probably applicable to larval growth in the field.
4. Information on the life cycle of C. puella is briefly reviewed and it is concluded that C. puella from the pond near Herzogenburg has an univoltine life cycle.  相似文献

The development of a coral community was monitored for 6 years (1998–2004) on 46 m2 of artificial settlement substrate in Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. Growth and survival of recruits (n=1385) belonging to 16 different species were quantified in relation to characteristics of the benthic community developing around them. The early life history dynamics (i.e. growth rate, growth strategy and survival) of corals differed among species although these differences were small for species occupying similar habitats (i.e. underside versus topside of substratum). In contrast to recruit survival, juvenile growth rates were highly variable and unrelated to benthic community structure, at least at the scale of this study. Competing benthic organisms affected coral recruitment success through space preemption (mainly by macroalgae) or recruit overgrowth (mainly by sponges). The results highlight the small spatial scale (mm–cm) at which the processes responsible for recruitment success or failure occur and emphasize the need to include such small-scale observations in studies of coral early life-phase dynamics.  相似文献
