Development of tool use in a macaque and a gorilla   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The development of the capacity to use a stick as a tool was tested in a macaque (Macaca fuscata) and a gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) infants that had previously shown to be able to use strings and supports as dragging tools. Subjects were tested between 15 and 38 months of age. Different levels of competence between the subjects emerged over testing. The macaque developed a stereotyped strategy to cope with the problem, only getting random successes, whilst the gorilla developed a flexible strategy and revealed to be able to mentally represent the solution of the problem. In fact, when not successful using the stick, the gorilla thought out an alternative strategy, choosing and adapting a new object to use it as a tool.  相似文献

PURPOSE OF WORK: Soluble protein expression is an important first step during various types of protein studies. Here, we present the screening strategy of secretable mutant. The strategy aimed to identify those cysteine residues that provoke protein misfolding in the heterologous expression system. Intentional mutagenesis studies should consider the size of the library and the time required for expression screening. Here, we proposed a cysteine-to-serine shuffling mutation strategy (CS shuffling) using a Saccharomyces cerevisiae expression system. This strategy of site-directed shuffling mutagenesis of cysteine-to-serine residues aims to identify the cysteine residues that cause protein misfolding in heterologous expression. In the case of a nonglycosylated mutant of the taste-modifying protein miraculin (MCL), which was used here as a model protein, 25% of all constructs obtained from CS shuffling expressed MCL mutant, and serine mutations were found at Cys47 or Cys92, which are involved in the formation of the disulfide bond. This indicates that these residues had the potential to provoke protein misfolding via incorrect disulfide bonding. The CS shuffling can be performed using a small library and within one week, and is an effective screening strategy of soluble protein expression.  相似文献

The possibility of the evolution of cooperation backed by indirect reciprocity (IDR) in a one-shot, multi-player game is investigated focusing on two mechanisms. First of all, the reputation system with image score (RS with IS), as proposed by Nowak and Sigmund [Nowak, M.A., Sigmund, K., 1998. Evolution of indirect reciprocity by image scoring. Nature 393, 573–577], is investigated in various game structures. A numerical experiment demonstrates that the RS with IS is a robust mechanism for the support of IDR in various dilemma games, but whose effectiveness decreases with an increase in the number of players in a game. It is fair to say that the RS is an information mapping function to relate between player's cooperative fraction on his action and IS. As the second mechanism, a simple tag system which could be applicable to animals having no cognitive complexity is considered to support IDR. Computer simulations of the tag system's strategy for invading a population initially consisting of AllD, AllC, and Random strategies suggest several novel facts. The Tag strategy with plausible crossover and mutation probabilities can only invade to settle down if the game structure is not Trivial and contains a moderate dilemma. The Tag strategy's evolutionary competition takes place mainly in the presence of the AllD strategy. During the competition, the Tag strategy frequently metamorphoses to shake off the AllD strategy, but stops after winning in order to avoid a shrinking payoff due to fragmentation.  相似文献

The evolution of a facultative sexual strategy that simultaneously produced sexual and asexual individuals was studied theoretically, under negative frequency-dependence of fitness. The organism was considered to be diploid, characterized by two loci concerning fitness and determining sexual strategy, between which a certain degree of linkage existed. The locus concerning fitness was assumed to involve two alleles, resulting in three genotypes, the relative fitness of an individual being defined by a decreasing function of frequency of its own genotype on this locus in the population. The sexual reproductive strategy was considered to be determined by three alleles; asexual, obligate sexual and facultative sexual. Simulations under various linkages between loci and level of frequency dependence of fitness showed that a facultative sexual strategy was generally able to invade and increase in the population. In particular, when the level of frequency dependence was high to some degree, the facultative strain producing many sexual individuals tended to exclusively occupy the population. Namely, the frequency-dependent selection resulted in a predominance of obligate sexual strategy over asexual strategy, simultaneously causing a subordination of the former to the facultative sexual strategy. This indicated that the evolution of sex should be considered carefully with respect to the possibility of invasion of facultative sex.  相似文献

 A scheme is presented that uses the self-motion of a robot, equipped with a single visual sensor, to navigate in a safe manner. The motion strategy used is modelled on the motion of insects that effectively have a single eye and must move in order to determine range. The essence of the strategy is to employ a zigzag motion in order to (a) estimate the range to objects and (b) know the safe distance of travel in the present direction. An example is presented of a laboratory robot moving in a cluttered environment. The results show that this motion strategy can be successfully employed in an autonomous robot to avoid collisions. The aim of this study was to evaluate methods for developing a Brazilian maize core collection. For an initial survey of the active collection, passport information, as well as characterization and evaluation of accessions, were taken into consideration, these then being divided according to geographic region and kernel-type. Multiple sampling methods were evaluated. The strategy of constant sampling generated extensive alterations in extract accession frequency. The multivariate strategy with dispersion graphs and principal components associated with the Tocher method was considered efficient for identifying the most divergent genotypes. The multivariate strategy generated greater alterations in the variance of traits. The average number of traits revealed few modifications with the various sampling strategies used. Therefore, the active collection could be considered as possessing a satisfactory amount of information for most of its accessions. Moreover, the multivariate strategy generated modifications in the variance of the traits, independent of sampling intensity.  相似文献

Unbalanced bipolar stimulation, delivered using charge balanced pulses, was used to produce “Phantom stimulation”, stimulation beyond the most apical contact of a cochlear implant’s electrode array. The Phantom channel was allocated audio frequencies below 300Hz in a speech coding strategy, conveying energy some two octaves lower than the clinical strategy and hence delivering the fundamental frequency of speech and of many musical tones. A group of 12 Advanced Bionics cochlear implant recipients took part in a chronic study investigating the fitting of the Phantom strategy and speech and music perception when using Phantom. The evaluation of speech in noise was performed immediately after fitting Phantom for the first time (Session 1) and after one month of take-home experience (Session 2). A repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) within factors strategy (Clinical, Phantom) and interaction time (Session 1, Session 2) revealed a significant effect for the interaction time and strategy. Phantom obtained a significant improvement in speech intelligibility after one month of use. Furthermore, a trend towards a better performance with Phantom (48%) with respect to F120 (37%) after 1 month of use failed to reach significance after type 1 error correction. Questionnaire results show a preference for Phantom when listening to music, likely driven by an improved balance between high and low frequencies.  相似文献

A predator which is preying on a model-mimic system can choose either the single-trial strategy or a multi-trial strategy as its behavior in learning to prudently harvest such a prey system. In this learning behavior, an important and often-posed problem is to determine which among these two strategies is better suited for the predator and why one is preferable over the other. We present in this article, using Markov chain methods, an extensive analysis of these strategies (and also of eat-everything, strategy). We conclude that the multi-trial strategy is the one that the predator should adopt (but we will also describe the situations when the single-trial strategy seems to be better). Our conclusions are based on the comparisons of quantities such as the mean benefit to the predator, energy derived by a predator from the model-mimic system and (a newly introduced notion of) contagion in eating mimics and models (these quantities are computed for different strategies). The first two quantities are functions of the abundancep and noxiousnessb of models. The contagion is a function of onlyp; and, though independent ofb, it is also in support of multi-trial, strategy. We introduce, in the present context, a biological analog of the d'Alembert principle and also derive functions describing the influences of eating a specified type of prey at a given time on eating any type of prey at a later time. Various results of Estabrook-Jespersen (single-trial strategy) and Bobisud-Potratz (multi-trial strategy) are re-derived as special cases of our more general results. Despite strong evidence that HDL-cholesterol levels predict atherosclerotic events in a population, attempts at using an HDL-based treatment strategy have not yet been successful. Most of the efforts to date have focused on raising plasma HDL-cholesterol levels. This brief review focuses on a different strategy, which is based on the use of 18-amino acid apoA-I mimetic peptides. The story of these peptides spans decades and illustrates the remarkable complexity of HDL-based treatment strategies, but suggests that such a strategy may still be successful.  相似文献

Since concepts may have different meanings in different contexts, students have to learn to recontextualise them, i.e. to adapt their meanings to a new context. It is unclear, however, what characteristics a learning and teaching strategy for recontextualising should have. The study aims to develop such a learning and teaching strategy for cellular respiration. The strategy consists of a storyline, consisting of three contexts, with embedded cognitive elements and some episodes focussed on recontextualising cellular respiration. Testing the strategy in two classes in upper secondary biology education showed that the strategy was largely practicable.  相似文献

A deductive analysis concerning replicator dynamics proved that a continuous strategy game (in which a player chooses an arbitrary real number between [0, 1] as a cooperative fraction) has the same equilibrium as a discrete strategy game (in which a player chooses only C or D), which has the same linear payoff structure as a continuous strategy game. The question of which strategy is employed in human decision making has been studied extensively in the context of cognitive tasks; however, this question has not been investigated systematically in the context of perceptual tasks. The goal of this study was to gain insight into the decision-making strategy used by human observers in a low-level perceptual task. Data from more than 100 individuals who participated in an auditory-visual spatial localization task was evaluated to examine which of three plausible strategies could account for each observer''s behavior the best. This task is very suitable for exploring this question because it involves an implicit inference about whether the auditory and visual stimuli were caused by the same object or independent objects, and provides different strategies of how using the inference about causes can lead to distinctly different spatial estimates and response patterns. For example, employing the commonly used cost function of minimizing the mean squared error of spatial estimates would result in a weighted averaging of estimates corresponding to different causal structures. A strategy that would minimize the error in the inferred causal structure would result in the selection of the most likely causal structure and sticking with it in the subsequent inference of location—“model selection.” A third strategy is one that selects a causal structure in proportion to its probability, thus attempting to match the probability of the inferred causal structure. This type of probability matching strategy has been reported to be used by participants predominantly in cognitive tasks. Comparing these three strategies, the behavior of the vast majority of observers in this perceptual task was most consistent with probability matching. While this appears to be a suboptimal strategy and hence a surprising choice for the perceptual system to adopt, we discuss potential advantages of such a strategy for perception.  相似文献

The huge conservation interest that mammals attract and the large datasets that have been collected on them have propelled a diversity of global mammal prioritization schemes, but no comprehensive global mammal conservation strategy. We highlight some of the potential discrepancies between the schemes presented in this theme issue, including: conservation of species or areas, reactive and proactive conservation approaches, conservation knowledge and action, levels of aggregation of indicators of trend and scale issues. We propose that recently collected global mammal data and many of the mammal prioritization schemes now available could be incorporated into a comprehensive global strategy for the conservation of mammals. The task of developing such a strategy should be coordinated by a super-partes, authoritative institution (e.g. the International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN). The strategy would facilitate funding agencies, conservation organizations and national institutions to rapidly identify a number of short-term and long-term global conservation priorities, and act complementarily to achieve them.  相似文献

Many macroparasites spend a crucial phase of their life-cycle as free-living infective stages. Despite their importance, however, little theoretical work has considered how evolution may shape the behaviour of these stages. Here, we develop what we believe to be the first stochastic dynamic programming model of parasite life-history strategies to investigate how a trade-off between resource depletion and host encounter rate may shape the optimal infection strategy of a macroparasite. The optimal strategy depends strongly on the probability of host contact and, depending on the relative costs and benefits, macroparasites should adopt either a passive 'ambushing' (sit-and-wait) strategy, an active 'cruising' strategy or a mixed strategy with an initial cruising phase, followed by a switch to ambushing when energy reserves fall to a threshold level. Under no circumstances does the model predict ambush-then-cruise. We use our model to help interpret previously published data on entomopathogenic nematode foraging behaviour, showing how this framework could facilitate our understanding of macroparasite behaviour during this key stage of the life-cycle.  相似文献

In frequency-dependent games, strategy choice may be innate or learned. While experimental evidence in the producer-scrounger game suggests that learned strategy choice may be common, a recent theoretical analysis demonstrated that learning by only some individuals prevents learning from evolving in others. Here, however, we model learning explicitly, and demonstrate that learning can easily evolve in the whole population. We used an agent-based evolutionary simulation of the producer-scrounger game to test the success of two general learning rules for strategy choice. We found that learning was eventually acquired by all individuals under a sufficient degree of environmental fluctuation, and when players were phenotypically asymmetric. In the absence of sufficient environmental change or phenotypic asymmetries, the correct target for learning seems to be confounded by game dynamics, and innate strategy choice is likely to be fixed in the population. The results demonstrate that under biologically plausible conditions, learning can easily evolve in the whole population and that phenotypic asymmetry is important for the evolution of learned strategy choice, especially in a stable or mildly changing environment.  相似文献

We report here a site-specific terminal dual-labeling strategy for a transcribed RNA. The combination of 5′-thiophosphoryl and 3′-amino functionalities enables efficient RNA dual labeling with different fluorophores at both 5′- and 3′-terminal positions specifically. This dual-labeling strategy is applied to pre-miRNA for construction of molecular beacons. The RNA beacons in their native hairpin formation bring the fluorophore and quencher groups into close proximity, leading to fluorescence quenching by FRET effect. Ribonuclease (dicer enzyme or micrococcal nuclease) can efficiently cleave RNA beacons leading to concentration- and time-dependent fluorescence increase. The dual-labeling strategy for transcribed RNAs involves only commercially available reagents, enzymes and native RNA, making it more accessible for general applications.  相似文献

The development of efficient microbicides, the topically applied compounds that protect uninfected individuals from acquiring HIV-1, is a promising strategy to contain HIV-1 epidemics. Such microbicides should of course possess anti-HIV-1 activity, but they should also act against other genital pathogens, which facilitate HIV-1 transmission. The new trend in microbicide strategy is to use drugs currently used in HIV-1 therapy. The success of this strategy is mixed so far and is impaired by our limited knowledge of the basic mechanisms of HIV-1 transmission as well as by the inadequacy of the systems in which microbicides are tested in preclinical studies.  相似文献

Polygalacturonate lyase is a kind of enzyme that is abundantly used in the textile industry for cotton scouring. Previously, we reconstructed the polygalacturonate lyase gene in Pichia pastoris for the expression of this enzyme. To enhance the production of polygalacturonate lyase (PGL), a combined strategy was formulated by combining online methanol control and two-stage pH control strategies. For the two-stage pH control strategy during the growth phase, the pH was controlled at 5.5, and in the induction phase different pH levels were investigated for the optimum enzyme production. During the online methanol control strategy, the different levels of methanol (v/v) were investigated for the best enzyme production at pH 5.5. These two strategies were combined together for enhanced PGL productivity, and the induction phase was divided into two stages in which methanol concentrations were maintained at different levels online. The transition phase was introduced during the induction phase instead of introducing it after the growth phase. The two-stage combination strategy was formulated on the bases of methanol consumption of cells, optimal pH, cell viability and the production of polygalacturonate lyase by P. pastoris. By using this strategy, the production was doubled compared with common conditions, and the highest polygalacturonate lyase activity reached 1,631 U/ml. This strategy proved to be very useful for the enhancement of polygalacturonate lyase production by achieving higher cell viability, alcohol oxidase activity and phosphate-related compounds of the cells during the induction phase.  相似文献

Many studies have reported that adolescent girls and young women smoke to control their weight. The majority of these studies are cross-sectional and report on correlational data from quantitative surveys. This article presents data from ethnographic interviews with 60 smokers, interviewed in high school and in follow-up interviews at age 21. Contrary to previous research, this study found little evidence for the sustained use of smoking as a weight-control strategy. In high school, smokers were no more likely than nonsmokers to be trying to lose weight. In the follow-up study, 85 percent of informants replied that they had never smoked as a way to control their weight. One-half of informants at age 21 believed that smoking as a weight-control strategy would be ineffective, while the other one-half had no idea whether it would work or not. Researchers need to exert caution in propagating the idea that smoking is commonly used as a conscious and sustained weight-control strategy among adolescent females and young women.  相似文献
