Concurrent, rice-fish systems in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, are characterized by a rice field surrounded by a trench. Rice is direct seeded and fish are reared in polyculture. The most common species for polyculture are silver barb Barbodes gonionotus (Bleeker), common carp Cyprinus carpio L. and Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.). In a 1996–97 rice-fish experiment, the effects of (1) absence or presence of such a polyculture, and (2) different rice-seeding rates (100 and 300 kg pre-germinated rice per ha) on the field floodwater ecology were studied. Fish obtained from local nurseries were stocked in six out of 12 rice-fish plots at the Co Do experimental rice-fish station (10°10 N and 105°20 E). Silver barb, common carp and Nile tilapia were stocked in polyculture at densities of 3150, 310 and 550 fish ha–1, respectively. About 50% of the observed variation in the floodwater could be attributed to the fish stocked and to rice-seeding rate. The above-ground dry weight of the rice plants increased in the presence of fish and by an increase in rice-seeding rate. Greater shading by denser plants resulted in changes in variables related to aquatic primary production, including the amount of chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen concentration and pH. The presence of fish quadrupled the ammonium concentration, but decreased that of ortho-phosphate. Though fish increased the ammonium concentration, this did not result in a higher aquatic photosynthesis. Light, not ammonium, was the most limiting factor. However, increased ammonium concentrations in the presence of fish did have a positive effect on the density of Euglenophyta and the amount of chlorophyll-a, though only at the lower rice-seeding rate. At the higher rice-seeding rate, light seemed to be lacking. At the lower rice-seeding rate, fish also had a significant effect on the Cladocera–Rotifera ratio. Rotifera numbers increased as fish stimulated phytoplankton. We also demonstrated that fish most probably do not reduce ammonia volatilization losses. The lower rice-seeding rate seemed better for fish production than the higher rate: at the lower rate, dissolved oxygen concentrations were higher throughout the rice cycle. In addition, the amount of chlorophyll-a and the density of Euglenophyta were higher at the lower rice-seeding rate. Finally, we could show that even at high rice-seeding rates, fish had an impact on the aquatic environment. Fish access to the field is not hindered by dense rice stands.  相似文献

Planthoppers and leafhoppers are important rice pests. We tried to find out whether a polyculture of silver barb, common carp and Nile tilapia could control hoppers in intensively cropped rice fields. We used the data of five rice-fish experiments conducted between 1995 and 1998 at the Co Do rice-fish research station, Can Tho province, Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Our results showed that the number of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), Sogatella furcifera (Horváth), Nephotettix virescens (Distant) and Recilia dorsalis (Motschulsky) was the same in fields with and without stocked fish. We concluded that the three stocked fish species are not able to control hopper numbers. Other, predatory fish species might be more effective in hopper control.  相似文献

In the 1996-97 dry season, a rice caseworm (Nymphula depunctalis (Guenee)) outbreak occurred at the Co Do rice-fish experimental station, Can Tho province, Mekong Delta, Vietnam. A polyculture of Thai silver barb, common carp and Nile tilapia was able to reduce the number of rice caseworm larvae (P< 0.001) by at least 93%. As a result, the number of rice caseworm adults (P< 0.001) and the percentage of damaged rice leaves (P< 0.001) were also reduced compared with rice fields without introduced fish. As the pest reduction did not differ in fields with high and low seeding densities, it was concluded that the access of fish into the rice field was not severely hampered by high rice seeding densities. The presence of fish or rice caseworms had no effect on the rice yield. The broader acceptance of rice-fish culture could lead to a reduction of the number of pesticide sprays used against highly visible defoliators like the rice caseworm. This would enforce the concept that rice-fish culture and integrated pest management are complementary.  相似文献

It is often claimed that fish stocked in rice fields have a significant impact on the rice pest population. However, there is little experimental evidence for this. We used the data of six experiments to find out whether a polyculture of silver barb Barbodes gonionotus (Bleeker), common carp Cyprinus carpio (L.) and Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) has any effect on the population of rice leaffolders Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée) and rice caseworms Nymphula depunctalis (Guenée), two common pests in intensively cultured rice fields. Fish had no effect on the rice leaffolder population, but significantly lowered the number of rice caseworm adults and larvae. We concluded that fish have some effect on the arthropod pest population in rice fields, although, most probably, only on sluggish pests living in the water or on the water surface.  相似文献

Intensive polyculture of blue tilapia, Oreochromis aureus, and common carp, Cyprinus carpio was conducted to determine their growth capacity and the accompanying water quality transitions in a 376 m2 (207 m3) fish pond without aeration or water exchange. A total of 485 fingerlings (290 tilapia and 195 carp) averaging 72 g each (total 35 kg) was stocked and fed commercial floating pellets (36% protein-6%-N) at the approximate daily rate of 3% of the fish biomass six days each week. The total net fish growth was 159.4 kg (4.2 t ha–1) with an average growth of 199.5 g per fish through the 96 days feeding period — 6 June to 7 September 1984. The s conversion ratio for the commercial feed was 1.3.Physiochemical patterns in the pond water were directly related to the rise and fall of turbidity through the course of the production trial. During one period of low turbidity, a biological inversion was evident with pH and dissolved oxygen measured at higher levels near the pond bottom and increasingly lower toward the surface. It is postulated that settled phytoplankton formed a photosynthetically-active algal mat on the pond bottom. The implications for potential fish kills can be significant.  相似文献

Lake Ziway harbours indigenous and exotic fish species including Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Nile tilapia was the dominant and preferred fish. However, its contribution to total catch has dramatically declined from 89.3% in 1994 to 27% in 2014 while the introduced common carp has increased from 0% before 2012 to 25% in 2014. Common carp potentially compete with Nile tilapia for available resources and could be a cause for the decline. Thus, the study explored the dietary overlap of the two species from April to August 2017. Schoener's overlap index (α) revealed significant dietary overlap between the two species (α = 0.84, between juveniles and α = 0.63, between adults). Juveniles fed mainly on animal origin (zooplankton and insects), while adult Nile tilapia have consumed plant origin (macrophyte and phytoplankton), and adult common carp fed on macrophytes and detritus. The presence of significant dietary overlap between the two species, particularly due to intense competition among juveniles, might cause the reduction of Nile tilapia stock because the native species has shown a competitive disadvantage for food in the presence of common carp. This study provides baseline information to researchers and decision makers working towards the sustainable resource utilisation of the system.  相似文献

Sri Lanka is blessed with a large number of irrigation reservoirs. Depending on their hydrological regimes they are broadly categorized into perennial and seasonal reservoirs, and are secondarily used for inland fisheries. The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Sri Lanka initiated a programme to introduce culture‐based fisheries in minor perennial reservoirs (< 250 ha) whereby 15 minor perennial reservoirs situated in eight administrative districts were selected for introduction of culture‐based fisheries in its initial year of implementation. These reservoirs were stocked with fish fingerlings of catla Catla catla, rohu Labeo rohita, common carp Cyprinus carpio, Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus and post‐larvae of freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Stocking commenced in 2004; stocking data from 2004, 2005 and 2006 are considered in this study. Stocking densities varied from 217 to 870 ha?1 year?1, with an average density of 425 ha?1 year?1. Fish catch statistics for 2005, 2006 and 2007 were considered; high variability in fish yield among reservoirs as well as in some reservoirs between the years were observed. Mean annual fish yield from all 15 reservoirs increased from 57.3 to 208.1 kg ha?1 year?1 after the introduction of culture‐based fisheries. Overall fish production in all 15 reservoirs increased by 263%, ranging from 42.8 to 1344%. Overall contributions of Nile tilapia, catla, rohu, common carp and freshwater prawn to fish harvest were 47.4, 27.2, 16.9, 4.3 and 0.7%, respectively. Biomass gain per fingerling stocked with respect to catla, rohu, common carp and freshwater prawn are 0.51, 0.42, 0.26 and 0.04 kg, respectively, indicating attractive monetary gains through stocking of these species. Results indicate the viability of culture‐based fisheries in minor perennial reservoirs. Possible reasons for high variability in fish yield and areas for follow‐up studies are discussed.  相似文献

The 16 African large barb fish species of Lake Tana inhabit different ecological niches, exploit different food webs and have different temporal and spatial spawning patterns within the lake. This unique fish species flock is thought to be the result of adaptive radiation within the past 5 million years. Previous analyses of major histocompatibility class II B exon 2 sequences in four Lake Tana African large barb species revealed that these sequences are indeed under selection. No sharing of class II B alleles was observed among the four Lake Tana African large barb species. In this study we analysed the class II B exon 2 sequences of seven additional Lake Tana African large barb species and African large barbs from the Blue Nile and its tributaries. In addition, the presence and variability of major histocompatibility complex class I UA exon 3 sequences in six Lake Tana and Blue Nile African large barb species was analysed. Phylogenetic lineages are maintained by purifying or neutral selection on non-peptide binding regions. Class II B intron 1 and exon 2 sequences were not shared among the different Lake Tana African large barb species or with the riverine barb species. In contrast, identical class I UA exon 3 sequences were found both in the lacustrine and riverine barb species. Our analyses demonstrate complete partitioning of class II B alleles among Lake Tana African large barb species. In contrast, class I alleles remain for the large part shared among species. These different modes of evolution probably reflect the unlinked nature of major histocompatibility genes in teleost fishes.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at .An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the most widespread invasive fish species, and this species has successfully established populations in the major rivers of Guangdong Province, China. Field surveys and manipulative experiments were conducted to assess the impacts of Nile tilapia on fisheries. We determined that the increase of Nile tilapia in these rivers not only affects the CPUE (catch-per-unit-per-effort) of the fish community and native fish species but also reduces the income of fishermen. In the manipulative experiments, we observed that the growth of native mud carp decreased in the presence of Nile tilapia. Our results suggest that the invasion of Nile tilapia negatively affected the fishery economy and native fish species, and suitable control measurements should be taken.

Vulnerability of three fish groups (tilapia, common carp, mullet) to predation by Nile perch Lates niloticus was evaluated. The study was conducted in aquaria and in cages placed in concrete ponds. Common carp Cyprinus curpio was the more vulnerable to predation by Nile perch followed in order by mullet ( Mugil cephulus and M. cupito ) and Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloricus . Medium-size Nile perch (30–32 cm t.l. ) were able to consume tilapia up to 14 cm t.l. , while tilapia of 15 cm total length were not eaten. Ratios of 1 : 10 to 1 : 15 between Nile perch and ready-to-spawn females of O. niloticus were found to be adequate to control tilapia reproduction.  相似文献

Fish behaviour was monitored in 1-m2 tanks each stocked with three 67-g rohu (Labeo rohita). In addition, 80-g common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were stocked at 0, 1 or 2 fish per tank. All tanks were fertilized prior to stocking to stimulate natural food production. In addition, half of the tanks were fed a supplemental diet. Results confirm the general view that rohu mainly lives and feeds in the water column, while common carp is a bottom feeder. In the presence of common carp, rohu increased the time spend grazing on tank wall and bottom, and decreasing grazing time in the water column. Supplemental feeding had a similar, be it less pronounced effect. When both present, rohu and common carp spend 47–52% of their time together. Rohu spends more time close to the bottom in the presence of common carp than when no common carp is present, presumably to profit from increased zooplankton production, triggered by the resuspension of nutrients by burrowing common carp. This was reflected in a higher growth rate of rohu in the presence of carp. These effects were stronger with one common carp per tank than with two common carp. In this study, the results from behavioural observations in tanks nicely complemented results from a pond study analyzing growth, production and food availability. Behavioural observations in tank yielded useful additional information helpful to clarify species interactions and feeding ecology in polyculture ponds.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted during wet season to evaluate the performance of different fish species for biocontrol of weeds in rainfed waterlogged rice fields with fingerlings of three exotic carps – grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Val.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes), silver barb, Puntius gonionotus (Bleeker) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) and common carp, Cyprinus carpio (L.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) – and three Indian major carps – rohu, Labeo rohita (Ham.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes), catla, Catla catla (Ham.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes), mrigal, Cirrhinus mrigala (Ham.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes). A total of 13 major weeds under the categories of grassy, sedges, broadleaf and aquatic weeds were observed in the rice fields. Grass carp reduced maximum weed biomass (weed control efficiency [WCE] 63% at 60 days after transplanting [DAT] and 62% at 100 DAT) followed by silver barb and common carp. Among the Indian carps, only rohu was effective in control of weeds (WCE, 23% at 60 DAT). The grain yield of rice (variety Varshadhan) slightly increased (4.2–4.5 t/ha), but straw yield was significantly higher (10.2–10.7 t/ha) under rice-fish farming. Fish yield was significantly higher in exotic carps (270–288 kg/ha/90days) due to higher specific growth rates (1.8–2% body weight/day). The study indicated that exotic carps (grass carp, silver barb and common carp in order) were more effective than Indian carps for control of weed in rainfed lowland rice fields and among the Indian carps, rohu showed potential for weed control.  相似文献

The process of learning to associate a visual cue with food was studied in groups of common carp Cyprinus carpio and Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus by means of a classical conditioning paradigm. In the first phase of the study, fishes were conditioned in either single-species or mixed-species groups to associate a blinking blue light with food. In the second phase, group composition was altered so that only single species were reconditioned, composed of individuals previously paired with the same or the other species. In the first phase, in the single-species groups, Nile tilapia rapidly formed an association between the visual cue and food, whereas common carp failed to do so. In mixed-species groups, both Nile tilapia and common carp associated a visual cue with food. In the second phase of the study, Nile tilapia retained that ability irrespective of whether they had previously been trained in single-species or mixed-species groups, common carp previously trained with Nile tilapia, were not repelled by the blinking blue light and gradually approached it from a distance, whereas common carp previously trained in homogenous groups continued to be repelled by the blinking light. Fish arrivals and departures from the feeding zones as well as fish position in the testing apparatus were analysed and contrasted in single-species and mixed-species groups outside the training sessions, revealing mutual impacts of one species on the other in mixed-species groups. The findings of this study demonstrated interspecific social facilitation of learning to associate a visual cue with food.  相似文献

Two growth trials using a range of ration sizes from starvation to maximum feeding suggested that linear relationships existed between specific growth rate and ration size for Nile tilapia and givel carp. Continuous measurement of activity showed that activity level, in terms of distance swum per day, was not affected significantly by ration size in both Nile tilapia and gibel carp.  相似文献

Biomanipulation, or management actions aimed to structure biological communities to achieve certain goals, has often been used in the restoration of aquatic ecosystems. In 2000, The Nature Conservancy acquired the Emiquon Preserve, which included two former Illinois River floodplain lakes, to restore these ecosystems. Restoration included stocking to establish a native fish community commensurate with historical records. Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides, bass) were also introduced to control poor water clarity and invasive common carp (Cyprinus carpio, carp). We summarized fish community characteristics and tested whether bass contributed to water clarity maintenance and limited carp during 2007–2014. The fish community was dominated by species stocked in greatest abundance, 13 of 32 species initially stocked have not been collected, and species diversity increased. No carp were observed in bass diets, water clarity declined significantly, and carp relative abundance increased. Increasing water levels during 2008–2009 diffused bass predation potential upon zooplanktivorous fishes and carp and weakened potential trophic cascading interactions. Our findings suggest that water level management, greater stocking of piscivores to maintain predator densities, prevention of gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) introduction, and/or a more diverse fish community including other native piscivores may be required to achieve long-term restoration goals.  相似文献
