The phyllosphere microbial populations inhabiting the needles of three conifer species, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), exposed to SO2 and O3, in an open-air fumigation experiment were analysed over a 3 year period using serial dilution after washing, direct plating and a fluorescein diacetate (FDA) enzyme assay. Total fungal populations ranged from 102 to 105 colonyforming units (CPU) g?1 fresh weight of needles. The dominant fungi isolated from needles varied with tree species and isolation technique; Aureobasidium pullulans (de Bary) Arnaud was most common on Scots pine and Norway spruce and white yeasts on Sitka spruce using the dilution plating method. However, direct plating of needle segments onto culture media indicated that Sclerophoma pythiophila (Corda) Hohnel was dominant on Scots pine and A. pullulans on Sitka and Norway spruce. Green needles of Sitka spruce were found to be endophytically colonized by Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii Bubak, but seldom by Lophodermium piceae (Fuckel) Hohn during extensive sampling in 1990. Statistical analyses revealed significant differences (P<0.05) between plots in the 3 year mean of the total fungal populations or the fungal biomass (FDA assay) on all three tree species. Differences between plots were also observed for a number of dominant component species. Data were also analysed for treatment effects. A significant effect of SO2 treatment was observed on the total fungal populations on Sitka spruce (P<0.05) which were reduced markedly by the low-SO2 treatment, while the O3 treatment caused a significant increase in total fungal numbers on Scots pine (P<0.05). The FDA activity on needles of both Scots pine and Sitka spruce was noticeably higher in the 03-only treatment plot, but the overall O3 effect was not significant. Treatment effects were also detected on the occurrence of component species. The serial dilution method revealed an SO2 effect (P<0.05) of a reduction in the occurrence of pink yeasts on Sitka spruce and an O3 effect (P<0.05) of an increase in the occurrence of S. pythiophila on Sitka spruce (P<0.01) but a decrease of Epicoccum nigrum Link and Cladosporium spp. on Scots pine. The direct-plating method revealed an SO2 effect of an increase in S. pythiophila on Norway spruce (P<0.05). Ozone treatment caused a significant increase in the isolation of a black strain of A. pullulans on Norway spruce (P<0.05). Endophytic colonization of Sitka spruce needles by R. kalkhoffii was found to be increased on two occasions by O3 exposure.  相似文献

Foliar elements were analysed in Scots pine, Sitka spruce and Norway spruce over a 6 year period before and during continuous exposure to SO2 and O3 in an open-air fumigation experiment. Sulphur dioxide treatment elevated foliar sulphur concentration in all species, and there were increases in foliar nitrogen in the two spruce species but not in pine. The concentrations of cations were frequently increased by SO2 treatment, but there was no correlation between the sulphur concentration of needles and their total cation charge. SO2-related elevations of foliar magnesium were correlated with the concentration of this element in soil solution, but the mechanism by which other cations were enhanced remains unclear. The only consistent effects on nutrient ratios were for SO2 treatments to increase sulphur/cation ratios.  相似文献

The carbohydrate metabolism of the needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) has been examined in trees that were exposed to SO2, and O3, in an open-air fumigation experiment located in the Liphook forest in southern England. Two-year-old seedlings were planted in 1985 in seven experimental plots. Five plots received fumigation treatments of SO2, O3 or a combination of these gases to give a 2 × 3 factorial design with one additional ambient plot Fumigation with SO2, occurred from May 1987 to December 1990 and O3, fumigation occurred from March to December 1988, May to December 1989 and February to December 1990. Five samples of needles for investigation of carbohydrate metabolism were taken between February and July 1989. The concentrations of soluble carbohydrates (including sucrose and hexoses) were greatly reduced in the needles taken from Scots pine growing in the treated plots, and were also reduced, but to a lesser extent, in the needles taken from Norway spruce. Little variation in the concentration of starch in the needles of either species was detected. The activities of the two final enzymes of sucrose synthesis, sucrose phosphate synthase and sucrose 6-phos-phate phosphatase, were greatly reduced in the needles of Scots pine and were also reduced, but to a lesser extent, in the needles of Norway spruce in the fumigated plots. These reductions could be correlated with decreases in rates of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation determined by independent groups of researchers working on the Liphook site.  相似文献

Terpene, resin acid and total phenolic concentrations in five‐year‐old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were analysed after exposure to ambient and realistically elevated (2 × ambient) O3 and CO2 concentrations and their combination in open‐top chambers during two growing seasons. Under O3 exposure, limonene concentration in needles and isopimaric concentration in stems decreased significantly. As a response to elevated CO2, α‐pinene and total phenolic concentrations in needles increased significantly, while bornyl acetate concentration in needles and palustric + levopimaric and neoabietic acid concentrations in stems decreased significantly. Some terpenes and resin acids were found at lower concentrations in the combined O3 and CO2 treatment than in O3 exposure or elevated CO2. A negative chamber effect was found: seedlings growing inside the chambers with ambient air had significantly lower concentrations of some terpenes and resin acids than seedlings growing outside the chambers. There was a lot of between‐tree variation in terpene and resin acid concentrations, which is typical of open‐pollinated populations. The results of this study suggest that, at least in short‐term experiments, Scots pine secondary metabolites are relatively insensitive to climate change factors. Total phenolics in the needles were the most responsive group showing about 25% increase in elevated CO2, and O3 exposure did not mitigate this CO2 effect. Terpenes and resin acids were less responsive, although some individual compounds showed notable responses, e.g. α‐pinene in needles, which increased about 50% in response to elevated CO2. As a consequence, although there were only slight effects on total pools of needle secondary metabolites, considerable O3 and CO2 effects on certain individual compounds might have ecological significance via trophic amplification, e.g. in decomposing processes of needle litter.  相似文献

Effects of SO2, aqueous fluoride (NaF) and a solution of nitrogen compounds (NH4NO3) on the visible symptoms, pollutant accumulation and ultrastructure of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] seedlings were studied in an open-air experiment lasting for 3 consecutive years. Visible injury symptoms were most pronounced in combination exposures and whenever F was applied. Visible symptoms correlated well with needle pollutant concentrations. Exposure to NaF increased needle F contents particularly when F was applied with SO2 or NH4NO3. This suggests that a reduction in N or SO2 emissions, in F polluted areas, could improve the condition of conifers via decreased accumulation of phytotoxic F in the needles. Norway spruce needles accumulated 2 – 10 times as much S and F as those of Scots pine. Microscopic observations showed various changes in the needle mesophyll cell ultrastructure. In both species, exposure to SO2 increased significantly the amount of cytoplasmic vacuoles, suggesting detoxification of excess sulphate or low pH. F treatments resulted in a significant enlargement of plastoglobuli in Scots pine and a darkening of plastoglobuli in Norway spruce. All exposures enhanced the accumulation of lipid bodies. An increased portion of translucent plastoglobuli was most pronounced in N treatments. Many of the ultrastructural changes and visible symptoms appeared only as number of years exposed increased, indicating that long-term experiments are needed. Both visible symptoms and ultrastructural changes pointed to the more pronounced sensitivity of Norway spruce compared to Scots pine. Ultrastructural results mostly supported earlier qualitative observations of F, N and SO2 effects on needle mesophyll cell ultrastructure. However, no reduction of thylakoids in SO2 containing exposure or curling of thylakoids in F exposure could be detected in the present study. The effects of low‐level ozone exposure and suppression of natural mycorrhizas on the above‐ground chemical quality of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) needles and insect herbivore performance were studied in a two‐year field experiment. Seedlings were fumigated with the ozone doses 1.5–1.7 times the ambient, and natural mycorrhizal infection level was about 35% reduced in roots with fungicide propiconazole. On ozone‐exposed seedlings the mean relative growth rate (MRGR) of Lygus rugulipennis Popp. nymphs was lower than on ambient ozone seedlings, but Gilpinia pallida Klug sawfly larvae grew better on elevated ozone seedlings than on ambient ozone seedlings. MRGR of Schizolachnus pineti Fabr. and Cinara pinea L. aphid nymphs or Neodiprion sertifer Geoffr. sawfly larvae or the oviposition of L. rugulipennis and N. sertifer were not affected by ozone exposure. Although ozone exposure did not affect total phenolics, total terpene, total or individual resin acid, total free amino acid, nutrient or sugar concentrations in needles, MRGR of L. rugulipennis positively correlated with total terpenes and MRGR of G. pallida positively with total amino acids. In addition, ozone exposure increased serine and proline concentration and marginally also starch concentration in needles. When mycorrhizas were reduced with fungicide, only MRGR of L. rugulipennis nymphs increased, but performance of other insect herbivores studied was not changed. However, number of L. rugulipennis eggs correlated positively with mycorrhizal infection level and also with total sugars. Reduction of mycorrhizas did not strongly affect the concentrations of analysed compounds in needles, because only phosphorus and potassium and some individual resin acids were reduced by fungicide treatment. These results suggest that low‐level ozone exposure and moderately declined mycorrhizal infection do not drastically affect either the above‐ground chemical quality of Scots pine seedlings or performance of studied insect herbivores.  相似文献

To estimate the susceptibility of conifer seedlings to aphids under future tropospheric ozone levels, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlings were exposed to ambient and elevated ozone levels in an open-air exposure system. Growth and reproduction of the aphids Schizolachnus pineti and Cinara pinea on Scots pine and Cinara pilicornis on Norway spruce were monitored. Levels of free amino acids in foliage and young shoots were used as indicators of host plant quality. In elevated treatment plots the ozone doses were between 1.2 and 1.7 times the dose in ambient plots in 1990–93. Half of the seedling material in 1992–93 was subjected to nitrogen fertilization treatment to evaluate the effects of increased N deposition. In 1990, population density of S. pineti on pine did not differ between ambient and elevated ozone treatments during growing season, but remained higher in the elevated ozone plot than in the ambient plot at the end of the growing season. This was associated with elevated levels of glutamic acid in foliage. In August 1992, the numbers of S. pineti were consistent between the two ambient ozone plots, but deviated highly between the two ozone-fumigated plots. Glycine concentration in pine foliage was elevated by ozone, but free amino acid concentrations were not related to aphid performance. In 1993, ozone and nitrogen did not significantly affect the relative growth rate (RGR) of S. pineti or C. pinea nymphs on Scots pine, but glutamic acid concentration in foliage was increased by nitrogen fertilization. On Norway spruce, fecundity of C. pilicornis females was higher in elevated ozone treatment, but RGR of nymphs was not affected in 1992. In 1993, RGR of C. pilicornis nymphs was increased by nitrogen fertilization in June, but not affected by ozone. Nitrogen fertilization increased the levels of total free amino acids, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and proline in elongating shoots of Norway spruce, and ozone reduced the concentrations of valine and γ-butyric acid. Our results suggest that availability of nitrogen from soil has a stronger impact on the concentrations of free amino acids in conifer seedlings than ozone. Some episodes of high ozone concentration may increase free amino acids in foliage. Aphid response to ozone was extremely variable, in agreement with previous laboratory experiments. The expected 20–70% increase in ambient concentrations of tropospheric ozone may in some occasions enhance aphid performance on Scots pine and Norway spruce seedlings, but in most cases the ozone effect on the susceptibility of conifer seedlings to sucking insect pests is not important.  相似文献

The effects of supplementary far-red sidelight on the formation of mycorrhizas and on the accumulation and allocation of dry weight and mineral nutrients were studied in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings. Starting one week after germination the seedlings were subjected to two different light quality regimes: control and simulated sparse-canopy conditions (FR+). In the FR+ regime, light reflected by neighbouring plants was simulated by means of supplementary far-red light sources, which reduced the horizontal red/far-red photon ratio (R:FR) without affecting PAR. Seedlings were harvested after three months of treatment. FR+ increased stem height and decreased the total dry weight of seedlings. Dry weight allocation to needles was not affected, whereas dry weight allocation to roots was reduced and that to stems was increased in FR+ treated seedlings. The total number of short root tips and developing mycorrhizas per seedling were lower in FR+ than in control plants. Most short roots were developing mycorrhizas, while non-mycorrhizal short roots and mycorrhizas with mantle or external mycelium were very scarce. Changes in the allocation of nutrients in general followed the changes in dry weight allocation, and changes in nutrient content followed those in total dry weight. However, mismatches among these changes resulted in significant changes in nutrient concentrations in some organs: the concentrations of nitrogen and potassium in needles and the concentration of nitrogen in stems were higher in FR+ than in control seedlings. Changes in biomass and nutrient allocation under low R:FR may promote rapid height growth during early development in stands of Scots pine seedlings, but concomitant reductions in growth of the root system and mycorrhizas may negatively affect tree performance over the long term.  相似文献

This study aimed to test the ability of Tricholoma matsutake isolates to form mycorrhizas with aseptic seedlings of Pinus sylvestris L. and Picea abies (L.) Karst. Germinated seedlings of Scots pine and Norway spruce were separately inoculated with either isolates originating from Finland or Japan. Eight months after inoculation, the Finnish isolate had formed a sheath and Hartig net on both host species. Ectomycorrhizal Scots pine seedlings inoculated with the Finnish isolate showed the same shoot height and dry mass as the controls. Ectomycorrhizal Norway spruce seedlings inoculated with the Finnish isolate had similar shoot height but slightly less dry mass than the control seedlings. For both tree species, inoculation with the Finnish isolate resulted in reduced total nitrogen content per seedling, but carbon content was unaffected. Inoculation with the Japanese isolate resulted in an initial Hartig net-like structure in pine but not in spruce. No typical Hartig net was observed on either tree species. Furthermore, seedlings of both species inoculated with the Japanese isolate showed significantly reduced growth, dry mass, nitrogen, and carbon content per seedling and shoot height (in spruce) compared to the controls. This study documents and describes the in vitro ectomycorrhization between T. matsutake and Scots pine or Norway spruce and the variable mycorrhizal structures that matsutake isolates can form.  相似文献

Young Scots pine trees naturally established at a pine heath were exposed to two concentrations of CO2 (ambient and doubled ambient) and two O3 regimes (ambient and doubled ambient) and their combination in open-top field chambers during growing seasons 1994, 1995 and 1996 (late May to 15 September). Filtered ozone treatment and chamberless control trees were also included in the treatment comparisons. Root ingrowth cores were inserted to the undisturbed soil below the branch projection of each tree at the beginning of the fumigation period in 1994 and were harvested at the end of the fumigation periods in 1995 and 1996. Root biomasses were determined from different soil layers in the ingrowth cores, and the infection levels of different mycorrhizal types were calculated. Elevated O3 and CO2 did not have significant effects on the biomass production of Scots pine coarse (Ø > 2 mm) or fine roots (Ø < 2 mm) and roots of grasses and dwarf shrubs. Elevated O3 caused a transient stimulation, observable in 1995, in the proportion of tuber-like mycorrhizas, total mycorrhizas and total short roots but this stimulation disappeared during the last study year. Elevated CO2 did not enhance carbon allocation to root growth or mycorrhiza formation, although a diminishing trend in the mycorrhiza formation was observed. In the combination treatment increased CO2 inhibited the transient stimulating effect of ozone, and a significant increase of old mycorrhizas was observed. Our conclusion is that doubled CO2 is not able to increase carbon allocation to growth of fine roots or mycorrhizas in nutrient poor forest sites and realistically elevated ozone does not cause a measurable limitation to roots within a period of three exposure years.  相似文献

The data on Scots pine responses to elevated ozone (O3) mainly come from experimental studies with young seedlings and trees. Based on the 38 experiments reviewed here, Scots pine may be considered as an O3-sensitive conifer species, with mature pines more sensitive than younger trees. This is due to their relatively small proportion of current (c) year needles with the highest photosynthetic capacity. Moreover, young seedlings and trees seem to acclimate to slightly elevated realistic O3 exposures, and hence do not often exhibit growth and biomass reductions in spite of the visible and microscopic needle injuries and changes in needle chemistry. The O3 sensitivity in Scots pine is thought to relate to impaired water status due to the malfunction of stomata and subsequent increase in transpiration. This may lead to reduced wood biomass in the long term, if Scots pines try to maximise the biomass of c needles and root biomass to maintain efficient water and nitrogen (N) supply to support the photosynthesis of c needles. Tree water status also contributes to the spring-time recovery of photosynthesis. We call especially for studies on atmosphere–needle surface interaction that would yield novel information on the impact of O3 on epicuticular waxes and stomatal functioning, which both regulate O3 flux and tree water status and hence also modify photosynthesis. The need for flux-based field studies is especially important in the light of future climatic change, since the risk presented by O3 to Scots pine forests in Northern and Central Europe seems to be equal.  相似文献

The goal of the present study was to examine the effects of slow and rapid changes of ozone (O3) concentrations on the physiological behaviour of current-year needles of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). For this purpose five-year-old spruce seedlings were exposed in growth chambers for 49 days to either charcoal-filtered air, slowly increasing O3 concentrations from zero up to 100 nl I?1 in weekly steps of 25 nl I?1, or immediately to 100 nl I?1 of O3. During the investigation period gas exchange, carbohydrate and antioxidant contents of the current flush were measured. In needles which experienced slowly increasing O3 concentrations, cumulative O3 uptake was approximately 30 % lower than in needles continuously fumigated with 100 nl I?1 of O3. The higher 03 uptake in the permanent 100 nl I?1 O3 treatment caused a pronounced decline in net photosynthesis, in the efficiency of CO2 uptake and in the starch content of the seedlings. Initially the ascorbate pool increased, but after 5 weeks of exposure ascorbate concentrations declined and were comparable to values obtained in charcoal-filtered controls, while the thiol contents were enhanced during fumigation with permanent 100 nl I-?1 O3. On the contrary, slowly increasing O3 caused a significant increase in total needle ascorbate throughout the fumigation period, which probably prevented an O3-induced decline in the photosynthetic machinery as photosynthesis was not affected although the thiol contents were not enhanced. Furthermore, starch content was slightly higher than in O3-free controls. These results suggest that seedlings of Norway spruce have the possibility to acclimate to O3 stress, as slowly increasing O3 concentrations seemed to increase resistance and the seedlings were able to compensate.  相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees, aged about 20 years old, growing on a natural pine heath were exposed to two concentrations of CO2 (ambient CO2 and double-ambient CO2) and two O3 regimes (ambient O3 and double-ambient O3) and their combination in open-top chambers during growing seasons 1994, 1995 and 1996. Concentrations of foliar starch and secondary compounds are reported in this paper. Starch concentrations remained unaffected by elevated CO2 and/or O3 concentrations during the first 2 study years. But in the autumn of the last study year, a significantly higher concentration of starch was found in current-year needles of trees exposed to elevated CO2 compared with ambient air. There were large differences in concentrations of starch and secondary compounds between individual trees. Elevated concentrations of CO2 and/or O3 did not have any significant effects on the concentrations of foliar total monoterpenes, total resin acids or total phenolics. Significantly higher concentrations of monoterpenes and resin acids and mostly lower concentrations of starch were found in trees growing without chambers than in those growing in open-top chambers, while there were no differences in concentrations of total phenolics between trees growing without or in chambers. The results suggest that elevated concentrations of CO2 might increase foliar starch concentrations in Scots pine, while secondary metabolites remain unaffected. Realistically elevated O3 concentrations do not have clear effects on carbon allocation to starch and secondary compounds even after 3 exposure years. The long-term effects of elevated CO2 and CO2+O3 concentrations on the growth allocation in northern provenances of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.], Scots pine [Pinus sylvestris (L.)] and pubescent birch clones (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) were examined in open-top chambers after a 4-year-long experiment. The total biomass responses of the tree seedlings to increased CO2 and CO2+O3 concentrations were not statistically significant and varied between the provenances and species. The seedlings of northern origin were the least sensitive in their response to treatments. The total biomass of the Norway spruce seedlings slightly decreased in response to CO2 in three provenances. Scots pine from the local provenance had a slight biomass increase after elevated CO2+O3 treatment. The slower-growing birch clone seemed to benefit from elevated CO2, whereas in the faster-growing clone, reductions in biomass accumulation were seen. The combined CO2+O3 treatment reduced the positive effects of elevated CO2, especially in the slower-growing birches. Observations of significant effects were limited to a few parameters. Carbon dioxide treatment decreased needle dry weight of Norway spruce in one northern provenance. The needle and wood dry weight increased (CO2 + O3) in local Scots pine. Significant birch response was limited to increased fine root density (O3 + CO2) in the inland clone. The diverse effects of elevated CO2 and CO2 +O3 on seedling growth and biomass provide evidence that exposure of northern trees to the enhanced variable CO2 and O3 concentrations of the future will have varied effects on the growth of these species. The direction and magnitude of those effects will differ depending on species and origins.  相似文献

Seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) of a northern provenance were cultivated in nutrient solution for 10 weeks in a climate chamber. The nutrient solution (renewed by solution exchange) contained 2.5, 10 or 50 mg N I?1. All other essential elements were added in optimal proportion to the nitrogen. Seedlings cultivated at 10 and 50 mg N I?1 were similar with respect to all characteristics studied. Seedlings cultivated at 2.5 mg N I?1 showed a lower growth rate, especially for the shoot, and an altered morphology, with high root:shoot ratios and long, slender roots. The nitrogen concentrations in shoot and needles as well as in whole seedlings were not significantly affected by the nitrogen supply, while the nitrogen concentrations in the roots were somewhat lower at 2.5 mg N I?1. Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.39) activity and the concentrations of carboxylase, total and soluble protein and of chlorophyll in the needles were consistently much lower for seedlings cultivated at 2.5 mg N I?1, than for seedlings grown at higher nutrient levels. A close correlation was observed between activity and concentration of the carboxylase (r=0.95). Carboxylase activity and protein were more sensitive to a low nutrient supply than was chlorophyll. The data show how activity and concentration of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase and the concentrations of soluble and total protein and of chlorophyll in needles of pine seedlings can be negatively affected by the nutrient supply, also when the nitrogen concentrations in the needles are close to those observed at optimal nutrient supply. It is suggested that pine seedlings store assimilated non-protein nitrogen in the needles when protein synthesis is under restraint. The nitrogen concentration in needles and seedlings could not be used as a measure of the physiological state of the seedlings.  相似文献

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and ozone (O3) concentrations have both been shown to affect plant tissue quality, which in turn could affect litter decomposition and carbon (C) and nutrient cycling. In order to evaluate effects of climate change on litter chemistry, needle litter was collected from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) saplings exposed to elevated CO2 or O3 concentration and their combination over three growing seasons in open‐top chambers. The decomposition of needle litter was followed for 19 months in a pine forest. During decomposition, needle samples for secondary compound analysis were collected and the mass loss of needles was followed. Main nutrients and total phenolics were analysed from litter in the beginning and at the end of the experiment. After 19‐month decomposition, the accumulated mass loss was about 34%; however, no significant differences were found in decomposition rates of needle litter between various treatments. Concentrations of total monoterpenes were about 4%, total resin acids 21% and total phenolics 14% of the initial concentrations in litter after 19‐month decomposition. In the beginning of litter decomposition, concentrations of individual monoterpenes –α‐pinene and β‐pinene – were significantly higher in needle litter grown under elevated CO2. However, concentrations of total monoterpenes during the whole decomposition period were not significantly affected by CO2 or O3 treatments. Concentrations of some individual and total resin acids were higher in needle litter grown under elevated CO2 or O3 than under ambient air. There were no significant differences in concentrations of total phenolics as well as nitrogen (N) and the main nutrient concentrations between treatments during decomposition. High concentrations of monoterpenes and resin acids in needles might slightly delay C recycling in forest soils. It is concluded that elevated CO2 and O3 concentrations do not have remarkable impacts on litter decomposition processes in Scots pine forests.  相似文献

The effects of aluminium chloride (AICI3) treatments (50 and 150 mg/l) on 3-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were studied in a sand culture during 2 growing periods in an open field experiment. Even by the end of the first growing period, a decline was observed in the concentrations of Ca, Mg and P within the needles, and of Ca and Mg in the roots. After the second growing period, increased N and K concentrations were observed in the needles of Al-treated seedlings. Both the needles and roots of Al-treated seedlings showed, after the second growing period, a decline in growth and increased concentrations of AI as the amount of AICI3 in the nutrient solution increased. Al-induced changes in needle structure were found to be symptomatic of a nutrient imbalance, particularly of Mg and P. Al-stress did not result in any observable changes in root anatomy or in the number of mycorrhizas. Scots pine proved to be rather resistant to Al-stress, indicating that direct Al-injuries are not likely in the field, though Al-stress may be a contributing factor in the formation of nutrient imbalances.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the interactive effects of ozone (O3) and drought on pigments and antioxidant enzymes of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis). Two‐year‐old seedlings were exposed in open‐top chambers to charcoal‐filtered air or non‐filtered air plus an additional 40 nL L?1 of ozone. After 20 months of O3 exposure, a subset of plants was subjected to drought stress by withholding water supply for 11 d. Ozone induced higher guaiacol peroxidase, catalase and KCN‐resistant superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in young needles, while drought stress increased glutathione reductase and CuZnSOD. One‐year‐old needles showed lower capacity to activate these enzymes in response to stress. Both ozone and drought activated the xanthophyll cycle pool and reduced chlorophyll contents in both current and 1‐year‐old needles. The combined effects of ozone and drought decreased antioxidant enzyme activities and the capacity of recovering after re‐watering. Similarly, interactive effects of O3 and drought reduced xanthophyll‐mediated photoprotection capacity in 1‐year‐old needles but induced a higher conversion of the cycle in current‐year needles. These results showed that ozone modified the Aleppo pine response to drought stress, suggesting that this pollutant might be reducing the ability of this species to withstand other environmental stresses.  相似文献

Elevated levels of both ozone and UV-B radiation are typical for high-altitude sites. Few studies have investigated their possible interaction on plants. This study reports interactive effects of O3 and UV-B radiation in four-year-old Norway spruce and Scots pine trees. The trees were cultivated in controlled environmental facilities under simulated climatic conditions recorded on Mt Wank, an Alpine mountain in Bavaria, and were exposed for one growing season to simulated ambient or twice-ambient ozone regimes at either near ambient or near zero UV-B radiation levels. Chlorotic mottling and yellowing of current year needles became obvious under twice-ambient O3 in both species at the onset of a high ozone episode in July. Development of chlorotic mottling in relation to accumulated ozone concentrations over a threshold of 40 nL L–1 was more pronounced with near zero rather than ambient UV-B radiation levels. In Norway spruce, photosynthetic parameters at ambient CO2 concentration, measured at the end of the experiment, were reduced in trees cultivated under twice-ambient O3, irrespective of the UV-B treatment. Effects on photosynthetic capacity and carboxylation efficiency were restricted to trees exposed to near zero levels of UV-B radiation, and twice-ambient O3. The data indicate that UV-B radiation, applied together with O3, ameliorates the detrimental effects of O3. The data also demonstrate that foliar symptoms develop more rapidly in Scots pine than in Norway spruce at higher accumulated ozone concentrations. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis Bong. Carr.) were planted as 2-year-old seedlings in an open-air fumigation facility at Liphook in southern England in March 1985. The soil was a humoferric podzol of pH 4. SO2 fumigation began in May 1987 and continued until December 1990. Long-term mean SO2 concentrations were 4,13 and 22 nmol mo?1. Three plots, one at each SO2 level, were also exposed to O3 at an average of 1–3.times the ambient level. O3 fumigation ran from March to December 1988, May to December 1989 and February to December 1990. Each species reacted differently to treatment. Scots pine showed no growth response to either pollutant, although other work on the site demonstrated a number of deleterious effects of SO2 on this species, including increased leaf loss and foliar injury. Stem basal diameter growth of Norway spruce was depressed in SO2-treated plots. In contrast, extension growth of shoots of Sitka spruce increased in SO2-treated plots, in apparent response to codeposition of NH3-N. However, diameter growth of Sitka spruce main stems did not increase. No effects of O3 on growth were recorded for any species.  相似文献
