Three experiments are reported concerning the effect of rabbit grazing (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.) upon the recruitment of Acacia seedlings to populations in the South Australian arid zone. In western myall woodland (Acacia papyrocaqsa Benth.) under prevailing rabbit and sheep densities, seedlings exposed to grazing by these two herbivores or to rabbits alone were severely pruned, whereas totally protected seedlings grew unchecked. Seedlings of four Acacia species; A. papyrocarpa, A. oswaldii (F. Muell.), A. kempeana (F. Muell.) and A. burkittii (F. Muell. ex Benth.) were transplanted into four 50 m × 50 m rabbit-proof enclosures. Six rabbits were introduced into each enclosure and within 24 h half of the total seedling population had been grazed. This was at a seedling dry weight ratio of 1|150 000 of the total fodder on offer. In one of the enclosures no seedlings were eaten and there is evidence to suggest that a dense patch of grass had a buffering effect, reducing grazing pressure. Small shoots cut from old Acacia and transferred to the ground throughout 1000 ha of western myall woodland were grazed rapidly near rabbit warrens and progressively less rapidly with increased distance from warrens. The experiments demonstrated that even with the lowered post-myxomatosis population densities, rabbit grazing pressure would significantly affect recruitment in arid zone Acacia populations in the absence of stock.  相似文献

Resource heterogeneity may influence how plants are attacked and respond to consumers in multiple ways. Perhaps a better understanding of how this interaction might limit sapling recruitment in tree populations may be achieved by examining species’ functional responses to herbivores on a continuum of resource availability. Here, we experimentally reduced herbivore pressure on newly established seedlings of two dominant masting trees in 40 canopy gaps, across c. 80 ha of tropical rain forest in central Africa (Korup, Cameroon). Mesh cages were built to protect individual seedlings, and their leaf production and changes in height were followed for 22 months. With more light, herbivores increasingly prevented the less shade-tolerant Microberlinia bisulcata from growing as tall as it could and producing more leaves, indicating an undercompensation. The more shade-tolerant Tetraberlinia bifoliolata was much less affected by herbivores, showing instead near to full compensation for leaf numbers, and a negligible to weak impact of herbivores on its height growth. A stage-matrix model that compared control and caged populations lent evidence for a stronger impact of herbivores on the long-term population dynamics of M. bisulcata than T. bifoliolata. Our results suggest that insect herbivores can contribute to the local coexistence of two abundant tree species at Korup by disproportionately suppressing sapling recruitment of the faster-growing dominant via undercompensation across the light gradient created by canopy disturbances. The functional patterns we have documented here are consistent with current theory, and, because gap formations are integral to forest regeneration, they may be more widely applicable in other tropical forest communities. If so, the interaction between life-history and herbivore impact across light gradients may play a substantial role in tree species coexistence.  相似文献

Abstract. We studied the vertical structure of wet grazed grasslands in Tierra del Fuego (southern Argentina). A point quadrat method was developed using a fine needle graduated in cm. The vertical and horizontal frequency of species and organs was quantified in samples collected from non‐grazed and grazed plots in the field. There was vertical stratification in both types of samples, but only in the first eight cm above the ground in grazed samples, with a dominance of Caltha sagittata. In non‐grazed samples graminoids grew taller than forbs and their inflorescences were an important element of the canopy structure. In both treatments, vertical species diversity was maximum in the lower part of the canopy, although diversity was significantly higher in grazed pots. In grazed samples, Caltha sagittata was the dominant species in 46% of samples and its leaves occupied 35% of the upper canopy. In the non‐grazed samples, Hordeum pubiflorum and Festuca magellanica were dominant in 63% of the samples, with H. pubiflorum leaves occupying 55% of the upper canopy. Comparing species by pairs, significant differences in vertical position were maintained in non‐grazed versus grazed pots. It is concluded that vertical stratification occurs even in the shortest communities. In this community, forb species grew close to the ground in the grazed areas, while forbs grew in the gaps and grasses above them in the non‐grazed areas. The main differences were in the relative dominance of forb and grass species and the presence of inflorescences.  相似文献

Question: Thorny shrubs play keystone roles in grazed ecosystems by defending non‐protected plants against herbivores, but their establishment in grazed ecosystems is poorly understood. Which factors control establishment of recruits of thorny nurse shrubs in grazed temperate woodlands? Location: Ancient grazed temperate woodlands (52°32′N, 6°36′E), The Netherlands. Methods: We surveyed biotic and abiotic factors for saplings of thorny nurse shrubs in plots with and without saplings. To disentangle these factors, we performed a transplantation experiment over two growing seasons with nurse shrub saplings (Prunus spinosa and Crataegus monogyna) planted in two dominant vegetation types – tall unpalatable swards and short grazed lawns – half of them protected from herbivory via exclosures. Results: Plots with shrub saplings had taller surrounding vegetation, higher soil pH and higher soil moisture than plots without saplings. These plots predominantly contained unpalatable sward species, while plots without saplings mainly contained palatable lawn species. After transplantation, sapling survival was higher in exclosures than in the open, and higher in sward exclosures than in lawn exclosures. Sapling growth was higher in swards than in lawns, higher inside than outside exclosures, and higher for Prunus than Crataegus, while browsing on saplings was higher in lawns. Conclusion: Unpalatable swards form essential establishment niches for thorny shrubs in grazed temperate woodlands: they protect against herbivores before thorns fully develop in saplings, and sapling growth is better due to improved micro‐environmental conditions. Once established and thorny, shrub saplings grow out of the protective range of the swards and in turn facilitate tree seedlings, which are essential for long‐term persistence of grazed temperate woodlands. This study shows that nurse plants may start as protégés before becoming facilitators for other plants in a later life stage. This may be common for nurse plants in various ecosystems. We argue that improved understanding of establishment of nurse plants and their constraining factors is crucial for effective conservation and restoration in various ecosystems.  相似文献

Over‐grazing or browsing by large herbivores may result in the loss of individual plant species or entire plant communities. Restoration schemes often involve exclusion of large mammals, but the resulting changes in vegetation may alter other important ecological processes such as regeneration, via changes in microsite availability for seed germination or increases in populations of seedling predators. Working within a large fenced area from which large mammals were excluded, we experimentally tested the effects of microsite, small herbivores, and their interactions on post‐dispersal seed and early seedling mortality of one nationally scarce (Salix arbuscula) and one nationally rare (S. lapponum) species of montane willow. Seeds were sown in three different microsites: natural vegetation, mown vegetation (mimicking grazed sward), and bare ground. Small exclosures and slug pellets were used to examine the effects of small mammal and slug predation, respectively. Survival of seedlings was monitored during the summer following planting. The presence of bare ground, rather than the absence of herbivores, was of over‐riding importance for early seedling survival and establishment. Protecting seedlings from small mammals made no difference to the levels of survival; however, protecting seedlings from slugs (Arion spp.) resulted in approximately 45% of seedlings surviving until the end of the summer compared to only 30% when seedlings were available to slugs. Although excluding large herbivores may increase seed production of existing individuals, the impacts of changes to plant communities on processes such as regeneration need to be considered if restoration projects are to be fully successful.  相似文献

Naturalization of Schinus molle (Anacardiaceae) has been observed in semi arid savanna of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. However, with high dispersal ability, the species is expected to achieve greater densities and invade more widely. The study involved a field manipulation experiment over 14 months using a factorial block design to examine transplanted seedlings in different savanna environments. The experiments examine the effects of soil type (sandy and clay), microsite, and herbivores on seedling performance (establishment, growth and survival). Seedlings were grown in a greenhouse and individually transplanted into four treatment groups: in open grassland, under tree canopies, and with and without cages to exclude large herbivores (cattle and game). The same experiment was repeated in two different soil types: coarse sand and fine-textured clay soil. Results suggest that protection provided by canopies of large indigenous Acacia trees facilitates S. molle invasion into semi-arid savanna. In the field, S. molle seedlings performed considerably better beneath canopies of indigenous Acacia trees than in open areas regardless of soil type. Whether exposed or protected from large herbivores, no seedlings planted in open grassland survived the first winter. Although, seedlings grew better and had higher survival rates beneath tree canopies than in the open sites, exposure to large herbivores significantly decreased heights and canopy areas of seedlings compared with those protected from large herbivores. The effect was greater on clay soil than on sandy soil. The results suggest that low temperature (frost), and possibly inter-specific competition with grasses, may limit S. molle seedling establishment, survival and growth away from tree canopies in semi arid savannas. Low soil nutrient status and browsing may also delay growth and development of this species. The invasive potential of S. molle is thus greatest on fertile soils where sub-canopy microsites are present and browsing mammals are absent.  相似文献

Abstract Exclosures were used to examine the impact of grazing upon the mortality patterns of populations of six indigenous grass species. The experiment compared unfenced areas with areas from which either sheep only or sheep, rabbits and kangaroos were excluded. There were large interspecific differences in mortality patterns, with Stipa nitida and Aristida browniana having relatively high mortality rates and Eragrostis eriopoda having relatively low mortality rates. Grazing-induced mortality was observed in treatment areas that were grazed by sheep, rabbits and kangaroos and in areas grazed only by rabbits and kangaroos. The short-lived S. nitida appears less likely to suffer grazing-induced mortality than species of intermediate longevity such as Monachather paradoxa. These observations help explain the decline in endemic perennial grasses that has taken place in the vegetation of western New South Wales since European settlement. Management of these rangelands to encourage these grasses must consider total grazing pressure and not simply the impact of livestock.  相似文献

The acorn-producing oak Quercus crispula Blume is shade-tolerant and its seedlings were found to be underdispersed on the forest floor, forming seedling aggregations near fertile canopy trees. However, 84.4% of the seedlings were dead within 2 years, with the highest mortality near the adult canopy trees of Q. crispula. This was mostly due to the high levels of herbivory by lepidopteran larvae. The most serious damage was caused by spring consumers, which fed on the leaves of canopy trees in June and, when the food quality of the leaves declined, fell down to the forest floor to consume the juveniles, including the seedlings. Contrary to the expectation of the herbivore–host arms race theory, most of the herbivores were polyphagous. The most dominant spring consumer Telorta edentata (Leech) was also polyphagous, and its distribution on the forest floor showed a high level of association with the distribution of dead oak seedlings.  相似文献

Summary The effect of tree canopy, understory, herbivores, and litter depth on seedling establishment, survival, and reproduction of the alien grass, Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass), was examined in a series of experiments in four forest habitat types in western North America. Higher recruitment, survival, and reproduction on clearcuts, which would be expected if the overstory alone is limiting the distribution of cheatgrass in forests, were not observed. Removing the understory in an otherwise undisturbed Pinus ponderosa forest did, however, increase the emergence of B. tectorum, but plants in these experimentally-created openings were more vulnerable to grazing by small mammals. In contrast, removing the sparse understory in an Abies forest neither enhanced recruitment nor increased the incidence of grazing of B. tectorum seedlings. Regardless of the forest habitat, most grazed plants died before maturity; even fewer grazed plants produced seeds. Litter depth influenced both recruitment and biomass production: both the rate of germination and the size of resultant seedlings were lower on thick litter (6 cm) compared to results on thin litter (1.5 cm). In the more open Pinus ponderosa and Pseudotsuga menziesii forests, cheatgrass colonization may often occur in openings in the understory alone. Colonization in the more shady A. grandis and Thuja plicata forests is unlikely, however, unless the opening extends through both the understory and the overstory. As a result, cheatgrass is unlikely to increase in any of these forests unless the scale and incidence of disturbance increases substantially.  相似文献

The Janzen–Connell hypothesis proposes that specialized herbivores maintain high numbers of tree species in tropical forests by restricting adult recruitment so that host populations remain at low densities. We tested this prediction for the large timber tree species, Swietenia macrophylla, whose seeds and seedlings are preyed upon by small mammals and a host‐specific moth caterpillar Steniscadia poliophaea, respectively. At a primary forest site, experimental seed additions to gaps – canopy‐disturbed areas that enhance seedling growth into saplings – over three years revealed lower survival and seedling recruitment closer to conspecific trees and in higher basal area neighborhoods, as well as reduced subsequent seedling survival and height growth. When we included these Janzen–Connell effects in a spatially explicit individual‐based population model, the caterpillar's impact was critical to limiting Swietenia's adult tree density, with a > 10‐fold reduction estimated at 300 years. Our research demonstrates the crucial but oft‐ignored linkage between Janzen–Connell effects on offspring and population‐level consequences for a long‐lived, potentially dominant tree species.  相似文献

Perennial C4 grasses, especially Miscanthus sinensis, are widely distributed in the degraded lands in South China. We transplanted native and exotic tree seedlings under the canopy of M. sinensis to assess the interaction (competition or facilitation) between dominant grass M. sinensis and tree seedlings. The results of growth, chlorophyll fluorescence, and ultrastructure showed that negative effects may be stronger in perennial dominant grass M. sinensis. Although M. sinensis buffered the air temperature, improved soil structure, and increased soil phosphorus content, these beneficial effects were outweighed by the detrimental effect, especially overshading. To ensure the establishment of target native species in M. sinensis communities in degraded lands of South China, restoration strategies should include removing aboveground vegetation, planting target species seedlings in openings to reduce the effects of canopy shading, and/or selecting competition-tolerant target species. Also, seedlings of exotic species used in restoration engineering cannot be directly planted under the canopy of M. sinensis.  相似文献

The response of semiarid grasslands to small, non‐colonial herbivores has received little attention, focusing primarily on the effects of granivore assemblages on annual plant communities. We studied the long‐term effects of both small and large herbivores on vegetation structure and species diversity of shortgrass steppe, a perennial semiarid grassland considered marginal habitat for small mammalian herbivores. We hypothesized that 1) large generalist herbivores would affect more abundant species and proportions of litter‐bare ground‐vegetation cover through non‐selective herbivory, 2) small herbivores would affect less common species through selective but limited consumption, and 3) herbivore effects on plant richness would increase with increasing aboveground net primary production (ANPP). Plant community composition was assessed over a 14‐year period in pastures grazed at moderate intensities by cattle and in exclosures for large (cattle) and large‐plus‐small herbivores (additional exclusion of rabbits and rodents). Exclusion of large herbivores affected litter and bare ground and basal cover of abundant, common and uncommon species. Additional exclusion of small herbivores did not affect uncommon components of the plant community, but had indirect effects on abundant species, decreased the cover of the dominant grass Bouteloua gracilis and total vegetation, and increased litter and species diversity. There was no relationship between ANPP and the intensity of effects of either herbivore body size on richness. Exclusion of herbivores of both body sizes had complementary and additive effects which promoted changes in vegetation composition and physiognomy that were linked to increased abundance of tall and decreased abundance of short species. Our findings show that small mammalian herbivores had disproportionately large effects on plant communities relative to their small consumption of biomass. Even in small‐seeded perennial grasslands with a long history of intensive grazing by large herbivores, non‐colonial small mammalian herbivores should be recognized as an important driver of grassland structure and diversity.  相似文献

Abstract Changes in the abundance, species richness and assemblage composition of vertebrates due to grazing by domestic stock were investigated in the semi‐arid woodlands of eastern Australia. Analyses were based on the differences found at 10 fenceline contrast sites. Two species of amphibians, 22 species of reptiles and two species of small mammal were captured in pit traps during the surveys. Kangaroos (red and eastern grey), sheep, goats and 66 species of birds were recorded along line transects. Analyses revealed that abundance of diurnal reptiles and species richness of diurnal reptiles and birds were significantly lower on heavily grazed sites than they were on lightly grazed sites. At a local scale, the gecko, Gehyra variegata, was more abundant where grazing was heavier, while Diplodactylus conspicillatus, Diplodactylus steindachneri and Rhynchoedura ornata responded to variables indirectly related to grazing intensity (kangaroo density, sheep and goat dung mass and sheep density, respectively). Birds more commonly sighted on lightly grazed areas than heavily grazed areas were the apostlebird, brown treecreeper, crested bellbird, grey butcherbird, hooded robin, jacky winter, little woodswallow, Australian magpie‐lark, mulga parrot, splendid wren, white‐browed treecreeper and yellow‐rumped thornbill. Birds more commonly sighted on heavily grazed areas than on lightly grazed areas were the Australian raven and chestnut‐crowned babbler. Most variation in species composition between sites was due to spatial separation and no regional‐level indicator species of grazing were evident. A combination of direct grazing‐related changes (e.g. loss of ground cover) and indirect effects of the pastoral industry (e.g. introduction of artificial sources of water) lead to changes in fauna at different scales of analysis across regions.  相似文献

Abstract. Lower salt-marsh species occur more in the grazed than in the mown sites of a salt marsh in Schiermonnikoog in the Netherlands. This was demonstrated by a sowing experiment which determined which characteristic of the stand structure, height of the canopy or percentage of bare soil, is responsible for this difference. The total number of seedlings which emerged was negatively related to the height of the canopy and positively to the percentage of bare soil. The survival of seedlings of Suaeda maritima and Plantago maritima could be explained by the height of the canopy and for the latter species also by the percentage of bare soil. The survival of Aster tripolium and Plantago maritima was higher in grazed than in mown sites. Since the amount of bare soil was higher than seemed necessary for germination and survival, it was concluded that the taller canopy was responsible for the absence of lower salt-marsh species in the mown sites.  相似文献

Herbivores can dramatically diminish revegetation success, but associational refuge theory predicts that neighbouring plants could hinder browsing of planted seedlings. The key to strategic restoration using associational refuge is to define which patch variables are effective against the appropriate herbivores, at multiple scales, and to understand which stages of the foraging process these variables disrupt. Our study aimed to test the capacity of existing vegetation to act as associational refuge for planted seedlings by affecting search, detection and consumption decisions, and more generally influence herbivore foraging patterns. We conducted a field trial with free‐ranging, mammalian herbivores and nursery‐raised, native tree seedlings. We quantified seedling browsing damage over time in relation to a suite of existing patch variables at two spatial scales (100 m2 and 4 m2). After two months, 78% of seedlings were browsed, suffering mean foliage loss of 90.5%. Focal seedlings were almost exclusively consumed by swamp wallabies Wallabia bicolor, an abundant generalist browser. Once a swamp wallaby investigated a seedling, the probability of consumption was high (86%). At the large scale, browsing of seedlings was delayed in patches with lower canopy cover and fewer browsed plant species. Seedlings in fern‐dominated patches escaped browsing for longer than those in grass‐dominated patches. At the small scale, browsing was delayed with higher cover of understorey vegetation. Associational refuge was provided by vegetation with characteristics, and at spatial scales, consistent with disrupted search and detection of focal seedlings by herbivores. Thus strategic placement of seedlings in existing vegetation – based on understanding which herbivore species is responsible and how it responds to vegetation – can take advantage of associational refuge during restoration. However, given rapid seedling detection by herbivores, associational refuge may be inadequate in the long‐term under high browsing pressure unless high absolute numbers of seedlings are planted among refuge.  相似文献

We explored consequences of spatial and temporal heterogeneity in herbivory on the survival, growth, and reproduction of the Californian native dune thistle, Cirsium occidentale, in coastal and inland sites, for 2 years. We assessed the relative impacts of insect and mammalian herbivores and compared the relative importance of herbivory in coastal and inland habitats and among locations with different microclimates across a coastal dune. Effects of insect and mammalian herbivores were tested with a combination of insecticidal spray and cage exclusion treatments in a factorial experiment at the coastal site. Mammalian herbivores strongly affected the population dynamics of C. occidentale in both years, and their effects were augmented by fungal infection (1991), herbivory by stem-borers (1990) and, to a lesser extent, by insect seed predators in both years. Mammals caused most plant deaths, but the mammal species responsible differed among sites. Rabbit herbivory altered the vegetative growth of coastal thistles and significantly modified other key aspects of Cirsium demography, including growth rate and timing of reproduction. Small, uncaged plants grazed by rabbits took at least 1 year longer to mature than did caged plants. Larvae of Pyrausta subsequalis were the only insects that killed established plants. In 1990 and 1991, the numbers of insects damaging seed heads before dispersal were low, but were sufficient to cause receptacle and seed damage. The number of mature, undamaged seeds (and percent successful seed production) was reduced significantly only for heads infested by fungi near the ocean in 1991: the fungus occurred in 37% of heads and caused a 77% reduction in mature seeds. Caloglossa species are widely distributed in mangroves and salt marshes around the world and their life history patterns are being investigated in laboratory culture. In Australia all isolates of C. monosticha, C. postiae and C. ogasawaraensis have Polysiphonia‐type (P‐type) sexual life histories. Among the 70 C. leprieurii isolates from Australia and New Zealand P‐type sexual reproduction also is dominant. However, ten isolates of C. leprieurii from the Spencer Gulf and the Gulf of St. Vincent in South Australia give rise to successive tetrasporphyte generations without gametophytes. Moreover, one isolate from Queensland is asexual. Only one South Australia isolate, obtained from Lake Alexandrina at the mouth of the Murray River, is sexual. South Australia and Pacific Mexico are two regions in which asexual reproduction is dominant. In another mangrove dwelling red alga Bostrychia moritiziana (Rhodomelaceae) non‐sexual reproduction also is frequent in Australia, New Caledonia and Bali (Indonesia). This asexual reproductive pattern of tetrasporophytic recycling appears to have arisen independently among individual populations of various red algal species in different regions. Investigations are underway on the molecular phylogeny of the Caloglossa leprieurii isolates.  相似文献

The scarcity of tree regeneration is a major concern for the long-term conservation of tree cover in the Aïr-Ténéré Nature Reserve (Sahara, Niger), and the causes of this shortage are poorly understood. We raised the hypothesis that livestock pressure is a key-factor in the mortality of tree seedlings and that facilitation processes among plants may enhance tree regeneration. We tested whether the tussock grass Panicum turgidum could facilitate the regeneration of a keystone tree species, Acacia tortilis var. raddiana, under a grazing regime. We transplanted 3-month-old seedlings of Acacia to plots representing different neighbourhood conditions (in areas without vegetation, amongst intact tussocks, among cropped tussocks, and under branches), which were either fenced or exposed to grazing by large herbivores. Survival and height of 160 transplants were recorded during one year. Acacia performance was much lower in the grazed plots, indicating that large herbivores had a strong negative impact on tree regeneration. Presence of Panicum tussocks had a positive effect on the height of seedlings, likely because they improved soil properties and water availability. No aboveground positive effect on Acacia was detected though the grass did reduce atmospheric aridity. We detected an indirect positive effect of Panicum on Acacia survival in the presence of herbivores when aridity and grazing pressure reached their maximum levels. We obtained evidence that indirect facilitation may occur in arid grazed areas, although it has been predicted to mainly exist in mesic competitive environments. Additionally, our results support the stress-gradient hypothesis against assumptions that competitive effects may dominate in extremely arid environments. Since most of the positive effect on Acacia survival is indirect (biotic grazing refuge) due to the presence of herbivores, transplantation of tree seedlings amongst Panicum may be a simple and low-cost technique for the restoration of Saharan ecosystems degraded by herbivore grazing.  相似文献

Common yew (Taxus baccata L.) stands are recognized as prioritary habitats for biodiversity conservation within the European Union. The effects of browsing on the regeneration capacity and spatial dispersal of T. baccata recruits at the European southern limit of the species in the Mediterranean Basin have been herein studied. The efficacy of T. baccata recruitment has been evaluated at six localities in the Northern Sardinia mountains, which have similar altitude, climate, soil, and vegetation but have different types of uses (three were grazed by livestock and three were not). At each site, five habitats have been identified for T. baccata seed dispersal: reproductive female T. baccata canopy, reproductive female Ilex aquifolium canopy, non-fleshy-fruited tree canopy, fleshy-fruited shrubs, and open areas. The density of seedlings was found to be greater under fleshy-fruited trees (reproductive female T. baccata and I. aquifolium) than under shrubs, whereas the sapling density was higher in shrubby habitats, especially at grazed sites due to the mechanical protection afforded by the spiny shrubs against herbivores. Land use (LU) has been found to be the most important factor in determining the spatial distribution of seedlings and saplings in relation to forest habitats. Although browsers had an ephemeral but positive effect on seed germination through their trampling and the resultant scarification, this process eventually became ineffective as was shown by the occurrence of the lowest density of saplings in those habitats where the density of seedlings was the highest. The ultimate and most important effect of browsing was the sharp decrease in the density of saplings, and their almost complete extinction, in non-shrubby habitats. This study highlights the result that, in Mediterranean ecosystems, browsing constitutes the main negative factor on T. baccata seedling-sapling transition and furthermore confirms the necessity to preserve shrubby patches in the vicinity of reproductive female T. baccata and I. aquifolium to permit the regeneration of T. baccata in the presence of livestock. Moreover, at ungrazed sites, T. baccata is able to colonize non-shrubby shady habitats. The application of different management strategies to ungrazed and grazed sites should therefore be the main direction in the management and preservation of T. baccata stands in the Mediterranean region.  相似文献

To understand how plant communities are structured by herbivory it is essential to investigate the roles of different herbivores and the responses of a variety of plant species in different habitats. We examined the effects of mammalian herbivores on survival and growth of transplanted seedlings of two native trees (Eucalyptus albens and Callitris glaucophylla), and one native grass (Themeda australis) in white box (E. albens) woodlands in eastern Australia over 3 years. Herbivores were manipulated using four fencing treatments that successively excluded livestock, macropods, and rabbits from woodland and grassland (cleared pasture). Survival was highest in the absence of mammalian herbivores and in woodlands, and patterns differed among plant species. Survival of T. australis was low, especially in grasslands, and mortality by overgrowth was common in ungrazed treatments. All plant species were taller in fenced plots, and differences between treatments were greater in grassland. Rabbits and livestock had the greatest influence on C. glaucophylla, while T. australis and E. albens were most affected by livestock and macropods. We used field data to parameterize stage-classified matrix models to predict escape from herbivory (escape height >100 cm) for tree species. Reduced herbivory increased the proportion of individuals reaching escape height after 15 years. Rate of escape was greater in grassland, and this faster growth appeared to counteract much of the negative impact of herbivores. While T. australis was unable to escape herbivory, larger, ungrazed individuals were more likely to flower and therefore contribute to the maintenance of the population. Our results show that habitat and herbivore species strongly influence the effect of herbivory on vegetation.  相似文献
