Echitriporites trianguliformis and E. suescae comb. nov. are two species of proteaceous-like triaperturate pollen that have been widely reported in several sedimentary sequences from northern South America, especially in Colombia and Venezuela. Despite their biostratigraphic significance and because of their morphological similarity, distinction between the two species has been difficult, leading to a biased understanding of their chronostratigraphic ranges. In this study, we compare 75 pollen grains spanning the Maastrichtian–Danian time interval through traditional and geometric morphometrics, and a newly proposed Procrustes-based method (index of pollen curvature). Traditional assessments show subtle variation between specimens; however, geometric morphometrics and the curvature index allow quantifying morphological differences in the degree of concavity-convexity through time. Therefore, geometric morphometrics and curvature index results enable us to constrain the stratigraphic ranges of both taxa. We suggest a coetaneous range for E. trianguliformis and E. suescae comb. nov. during the Late Cretaceous, but the presence of only E. trianguliformis after the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary event. In addition, we propose a threshold value of 1.5 µm for the curvature index as a tool for distinguishing between these two taxa. We conclude that the combination of geometric morphometrics and the curvature index provides a powerful tool to distinguish between morphological closely-related pollen taxa that are difficult to distinguish through both light microscope visual comparisons and statistical analysis of morphometric measurements.  相似文献

The goal for this project was to re‐examine key morphological characters hypothesized to differentiate Gila intermedia, Gila robusta and Gila nigra and outline methods better suited for making species designations based on morphology. Using a combination of meristic counts, morphological measurements and geometric morphometrics, morphological dissimilarities were quantified among these three putative species. Traditional meristic counts and morphological measurements (i.e. distances between landmarks) were not useful for species identification. Geometric morphometrics, however, identified differences among species, while also suggesting an effect of geographic location on morphological variation. Using canonical variate analysis for the 441 fish sampled in this study, geometric morphometrics accurately predicted true group membership 100% of the time for G. nigra, 97% of the time for G. intermedia and 91% of the time for G. robusta. These results suggest that geometric morphometric analysis is necessary to identify morphological differences among the three species. Geometric morphometric analysis used in this study can be adopted by management officials as a tool to classify unidentified individuals.  相似文献

The occurrence of a pre-imaginal caste determination represents a sort of “point of no return” to eusociality. In some social insect taxa, including Polistes species, the occurrence of distinct queen and worker castes is still debated. Before this report, no clear morphological differences between reproductive and non-reproductive individuals were known. Here we show that several pre-imaginal morphological differences of the Van der Vecht organ occur between foundresses (queens) and workers. Geometric morphometrics revealed that queens are characterized by shape deformations of this organ, which is responsible for a typical allometric growth of the secretory area. This organ is predicted to be larger in foundresses compared to workers because its secretion is involved in defense against ants, in nestmate recognition and in preventing workers from challenging for direct reproduction. The results presented here indicate the existence of an incipient morphological caste determination Polistes gallicus and suggest that this species may have passed the “point of no return” for eusociality.  相似文献

The rediscovery of the Minor Snake-eyed Skink, Ablepharus grayanus, from two different localities in Sistan and Baluchestan and Kerman Provinces, southeastern Iran is reported. A total of 24 specimens was examined based on morphometrics, colour pattern and pholidotic characters. One-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) based on morphometric measurements revealed significant differences in terms of the snoutvent length (SVL) and fore- and hind limb distances (GA) between eastern and western populations of Ablepharus pannonicus. The most distinguishing characters of Ablepharus grayanus are morphological features, especially ear opening status and scales around the midbody (18-20 versus 20-22). Based on morphological grounds, Ablepharus grayanus is clearly distinguished from A. pannonicus occurring in the eastern and western regions of the Iranian Plateau.  相似文献

Only two species of the strigeid subgenus Apatemon (Apatemon) sensu Sudarikov (1959), Apatemon gracilis (Rudolhi, 1819) and A. annuligerum (von Nordmann, 1832), are known to infect British fishes. A. annuligerum is poorly characterised, with few life-cycle data available, since only the adult and metacercarial stages have been described. Both of these life-stages demonstrate only minor morphological differences from those of A. gracilis. The multidimensional approach of principal components analysis (PCA) was employed to determine the intra- and inter-specific morphological variation that exists for metacercariae of these species. Analyses revealed that metacercarial morphometrics cannot confidently discriminate between Apatemon gracilis and A. annuligerum specimens. Indeed, levels of intra-specific variation present between A. gracilis metacercariae originating from different piscine hosts were as marked for certain populations as those between the two nominal species. Individual populations of A. gracilis metacercariae differed most in the relative dimensions of their internal organs, whereas variation between the two nominal species was primarily in length-related variables. A. gracilis specimens originating from Welsh and Scottish stoneloach represented two populations with the most comparable total body lengths, yet clustered separately. Conversely, A. gracilis metacercariae infecting rainbow trout and salmon parr differed markedly in size, but demonstrated minimal composite morphological variation. Much, if not all, of the variation described between populations and species of parasites can be attributed to host or to metacercarial location within a particular host. These findings and the lack of strong life-cycle data for A. annuligerum place some doubt on its validity as a species discrete from A. gracilis.  相似文献

Feeding habits are important life‐history traits in animals; however, methods for their determination are not well established in many species. The larvae of the beetle family Carabidae are an example. The present study tested the utility of geometric morphometrics of mouthpart morphology to infer the feeding habits of carabid larvae. Using Pterostichus thunbergi as a model system, larval feeding habits were inferred using geometric morphometrics of mouthparts and the results were compared with those obtained from rearing experiments. The rearing experiments indicated that P. thunbergi larvae are carnivores that require snails as an essential part of the diet. Through geometric morphometrics, associations between mouthpart morphology and larval feeding habits were confirmed for species in which these two traits are known. A discriminant analysis using these associations classified P. thunbergi larvae as snail/slug feeders, which is a result compatible with the rearing experiments. Geometric morphometrics also revealed that morphological integration and ontogenetic shape change might play roles in the diversification of mouthpart morphology. Overall, these results demonstrate the utility of the geometric morphometrics of mouthparts to infer feeding habit and to clarify the mechanisms of mouthpart morphological diversification in the study group, and the results also serve as a basis for future studies of other insect groups.  相似文献

We describe a new genus of Mantophasmatodea, Viridiphasma gen. n. (Austrophasmatidae), represented by one new species, V. clanwilliamense sp. n. The new species differs from previously described species in features of the male and female postabdomen including the genitalia, in morphometrics and details of colouration. The new species occurs syntopically with another austrophasmatid, Karoophasma biedouwense Klass et al., 2003; this is the first well-documented case of sympatry of two mantophasmatodean species. We therefore survey the morphological differences between these two species, document the absence of any morphological evidence of hybridisation, and also report on differences in life history. While a previous molecular phylogeny using COI and 16S genes ambiguously placed V. clanwilliamense sp. n. near the base of Austrophasmatidae (but not as sister to all other Austrophasmatidae), morphological characters strongly support V. clanwilliamense sp. n. to be the sister taxon of a clade comprising all remaining Austrophasmatidae. This phylogenetic placement challenges the current hypothesis of a linear north-to-south diversification of Austrophasmatidae.  相似文献

Recent years have seen the development of molecular‐based methodologies to investigate hybridization and its impact on the evolutionary process. However, morphological characterization of hybrid zones has only scantily been considered, especially in zootaxa. Thus, the level of congruence between molecular and morphological characters when attempting to detect hybrids remains a poorly tackled area. The genets (genus Genetta) provide an ideal case study for further investigation of the respective contribution of morphology and DNA in hybrid zone characterization because (1) their morphology has recently been exhaustively explored and (2) the existence of hybrid zones in southern Africa was proposed in the literature. We assessed levels of hybridization among the southern African genets, and questioned the role of ecological factors on the hybridization patterns detected. We used an integrative approach involving nine discrete morphological characters and a diagnostic discriminant function, geometric morphometrics and sequences of cytochrome b including collection specimens. The combination of independent materials allowed us to accurately reassess the level of hybridization in southern African genets, and revealed cryptic, interspecific gene flows. Morphology unambiguously detected a low number of G. maculata × G. tigrina hybrids and rejected the hypothesis of a large intergradation zone in KwaZulu‐Natal, thus supporting the species status of the two genets. Cytochrome b analyses revealed: (1) cryptic, massive hybridization between G. tigrina and the sympatric G. felina, and (2) a trace of reticulation (one sequence) between G. tigrina and the allopatric G. genetta. The type specimen of G. mossambica Matschie, 1902 is considered to be a morphological hybrid between G. maculata and G. angolensis. Remarkably, the morphological approaches (discrete characters and morphometrics) proved complementary to conclusions derived from cytochrome b sequences. Whilst morphometrics was generally unable to accurately identify all putative hybrids, this approach revealed diagnostic cranial shape differences between recognized species as well as the cryptic G. ‘letabae’ (included in the super‐species G. maculata). Morphometrics also confirmed the diagnostic value and age dependency of discrete characters. Our integrative approach appeared necessary to the detection of cryptic hybridizations and to the comprehensive characterization of hybrid zones. The recurrent detection of hybrids exhibiting tigrina‐like coat patterns may suggest (1) asymmetric hybridization of G. tigrina males to females of other species and (2) positive selection for tigrina‐like phenotype in South African habitats, but these hypotheses will have to be further tested using other sources of evidence. Despite the precise mosaic of hybrid zones identified in southern African genets, the environmental factors that shape patterns of distribution of hybrids remain unclear. Nevertheless, in the light of our range reassessment, it appears that seasonality of precipitation and periods of annual frost may play stringent roles in the distribution of genets. 太阳女神螺类(helcionellids)是寒武纪常见的一类软体动物,广布全球,多见于碳酸盐岩沉积地层中,而布尔吉斯页岩型生物群中却少有报道。贵州剑河凯里生物群是典型的特异埋藏化石库,产有700余件太阳女神螺类标本,这在世界各地同时期的布尔吉斯页岩型生物群中是很少见的。本文对贵州剑河八郎寒武系凯里组太阳女神螺类化石标本进行了系统研究,采用几何形态测量学的典型变量分析进行量化分析。几何形态测量学(Geometric morphometrics)是用界标点或轮廓线等来描绘生物的形态或者标记特征部位及器官,将生物形态特征归纳为数据变化的定量学方法,其中的典型变量分析(Canonical Variate Analysis)是多变量分析中进行判别分析的一个重要方法,可以用于多组数据之间的判别。CVA判别结果显示:利用壳体侧视轮廓线判别Dorispira属中三个种的正确率为92%,验证了Dorispira accordinonata、D.taijiangensis和D.cf.pearylandica化石种分类合理性。本文研究表明即使壳体形态较为相似的类群,也可以较为准确地使用CVA量化其中的差别,...  相似文献

Scaphinotus petersi Roeschke, 1907 (Carabidae) is a ground beetle endemic to Sky Islands in south‐eastern Arizona. Previous taxonomic studies described several subspecies with morphological differences inhabiting geographically isolated mountain ranges. We combined molecular sequence data and morphometric data, especially head and pronotum shape analyses, to examine the variation and divergence in subspecies and isolated montane populations. In this study, we employ a combination of distance morphometrics as well as geometric morphometrics to quantify the level of morphological variation, and to test the hypothesis that geographically distinct populations of S. petersi are phenotypically distinct. Results suggest that these isolated populations have diverged morphologically and genetically. Phylogenetic analyses identified two monophyletic lineages within the species that correspond generally to pronotum shape. We observed significant morphological variation among most montane populations in of S. petersi, with the pronotum shape as the clearest delimiting trait. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

An integrative taxonomic approach revealed two taxa within Chrysotoxum festivum (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera, Syrphidae), C. festivum A and C. festivum B. In addition to morphological differences, results also showed significant distinction in geometric morphometrics of wings and surstyli, and in DNA sequence data (nuclear ITS2 sequences) between C. festivum A, C. festivum B, and the closely related species C. elegans Loew, 1841. Phylogenetic relationships between taxa are not necessarily reflected by morphological data due to widespread homoplasy and convergence. However, combining morphological and molecular data provides insights into the evolution of biological forms and into the potential factors involved. Here we focus on a complex of three taxa of bats with unclear taxonomic affinities: Myotis myotis, Myotis blythii and Myotis punicus. Traditional morphometric methods failed to separate them, whereas recent molecular‐based studies suggested that they constitute separate biological species. In the present study, landmark‐based geometric morphometrics methods have been used to analyse the skull variability of 218 specimens belonging to this species complex. Patterns of size and shape delimitate three morphological groups that are congruent with the proposed taxonomic assignments, and therefore support species rank for all three major groups. These morphometrics results, however, suggest that M. myotis and M. punicus share shape characteristics in the rostrum and in the posterior part of the skull that differ from M. blythii. Because previous molecular phylogenetic analyses suggested that M. myotis and M. blythii are sister species, we interpret the similitude in skull morphology between M. myotis and M. punicus as a convergence probably related to their similar feeding habits. Within the taxon M. punicus, the skull of Corsican and Sardinian populations significantly differs from that of Maghrebian ones, suggesting the existence of further cryptic taxonomic diversity. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 529–538.  相似文献

Haplochromis pharyngalis and Haplochromis petronius, two endemic cichlids from the Lake Edward system (Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo), are very similar in general morphology but have been reported to differ in pharyngeal jaw morphology and distribution. This study analysed 51 morphometrics and various qualitative characteristics of 48 specimens from different localities. The morphological traits of both species strongly overlap, and differences in the pharyngeal jaw morphology correspond to a geographic morphocline. We conclude that all specimens belong to one valid species, H. pharyngalis, and consider H. petronius to be a synonym.  相似文献

Diet, shape and their covariation were analysed in juvenile flounder Platichthys flesus and plaice Pleuronectes platessa specimens from a tidal inshore habitat (Dublin Bay) in the Irish Sea. Stomach content analysis revealed differences in the diet, suggesting a substantial degree of resource partitioning between the species. Geometric morphometrics detected significant and discriminating differences in body shape, particularly in the head region. Most interestingly, a high degree of correlation was detected between diet and shape. The ontogenetic and ecological implications of the diet and shape covariation pattern were discussed, suggesting that morphological differences, in particular in the head region, may represent the functional platform which allows for the existence of ecologically significant differences in prey search and capture between P. platessa and P. flesus.  相似文献

Several subspecies are defined within Codium fragile, including the invasive C. fragile ssp. fragile, first reported in New Zealand in 1973. An endemic subspecies, C. fragile ssp. novae‐zelandiae, is also found throughout New Zealand. The two subspecies exhibit morphological and molecular variation, although these have never been evaluated together. We compared variation between subspecies at locations in Auckland, identifying subspecies using rps3‐rpl16 DNA sequence data, and assessing gross morphological differences, anatomical utricle characters and morphometrics. The taxonomic utility of the morphometric data sets was assessed by linear discriminant analysis. Utricle characters and measurements varied within individual thalli and between different preservation methods. The phenotypes of both subspecies were highly variable and influenced by environment. Accurate subspecies delimitation using morphological data was not possible; the discriminant analyses performed no better than chance for all combinations of the morphological data. Specimens from New Zealand, Canada, Australia and Ireland were sequenced using both the rps3‐rpl16 and tufA plastid markers. The tufA elongation factor was shown to be a good candidate for differentiating subspecies of C. fragile. This marker is twice the length of the rps3‐rpl16 spacer, shows greater variation between ssp. fragile and novae‐zelandiae, and is less prone to sequencing error. A simple restriction enzyme digest of the tufA amplicon can distinguish ssp. fragile and ssp. novae‐zelandiae. Our study expands the known range of the ssp. fragile in New Zealand, including the first record of this subspecies from the west coast of Auckland, and points to a need to re‐evaluate morphological and molecular criteria for subspecies currently defined within C. fragile.  相似文献

The present study was carried out with two sturgeon species, Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) and sterlet (A. ruthenus) to compare spermatological parameters to better understand inter‐species differences. Significant differences between morphometric features were observed such as acrosome length, acrosome width, head length, midpiece width and flagellar length, while midpiece length did not reveal such differences. The sterlet has a shorter spermatozoon than the Siberian sturgeon. Ultrastructural parameters vary significantly in terms of length of the nucleus, diameter of the endonuclear canals (EC), size of posterolateral projections (PP) and diameter of flagellum. Mean values for density of spermatozoa in the semen, seminal plasma pH, osmolality (mOsmol kg?1), along with Ca2+, Na+, K+, Cl? ions concentrations (mm ) were determined to be 0.61 ± 0.37 × 109, 8.16 ± 0.18, 77.20 ± 52.28, 0.24 ± 0.06, 31.39 ± 10.21, 3.51 ± 1.10, 14.00 ± 4.30 in A. baerii and 0.41 ± 0.32 × 109, 8.13 ± 0.19, 50.74 ± 6.27, 0.16 ± 0.11, 20.11 ± 3.78, 1.26 ± 0.54, 6.11 ± 0.60 in A. ruthenus, respectively. Significant differences were observed in Na+, K+ and Cl? concentrations in the seminal plasma as well as in sperm velocity. The percentage of motile spermatozoa did not show any significant difference between the two species. Comparing the results of this study with published literature data on sturgeon spermatozoa reveals that morphological and ultrastructural parameters of spermatozoa together with some parameters of the seminal fluid and spermatozoa velocity can be used in comparative spermatology to better understand inter‐species differences. The observed biochemical and physiological differences should be also considered for the development of methods for controlled reproduction and for sperm cryopreservation techniques.  相似文献

Migration of populations to and from glacial refugia is responsible for various cases of speciation and subspeciation in Europe. The pattern of distribution and the degree of diversification between lineages originated by isolation in different glacial refugia usually depends on ecological traits, especially to their dispersal ability. Zerynthia polyxena is a philopatric species, scattered in small populations and rarely colonizing mountain areas. These characteristics probably caused repeated isolation during the Quaternary and may have favoured diversification. Actually two studies, based on both morphological and genetic data, suggest the existence of two highly distinct lineages in Europe having in Northern Italy their contact zone. In this study, I applied geometric morphometrics to male genitalia and demonstrated that (i) two morphotypes exist in Europe approximately facing on the two sides of the Po River; (ii) the two lineages probably survived glaciations in Italy and the Balkan Peninsula, respectively; then the Balkans lineage expanded to Central and Eastern Europe; (iii) no hybrid populations seem to exist in the contact area and, in one locality at least, the two lineages live in sympatry without any evidence of intermediates. These results suggest that (i) two sister species of Zerynthia exist in Europe. Accordingly, Papilio cassandra Geyer, 1828 is reinstated, as Zerynthia cassandra stat. rev., as the species to which the Zerynthia from Italy South of the Po River belong. Male genitalia differences with Zerynthia polyxena are described.  相似文献

Truncatelloid gastropods are one of the most species‐rich subterranean invertebrate groups. Their current taxonomy is based on morphological characters. However, this is not a comprehensive approach and does not take into account the degree of phylogenetic divergence between stygobiont populations inhabiting hydrologically isolated but geographically close caves. We studied two Paladilhiopsis populations of a small and isolated karstic area (Mecsek Mountains, Hungary) with two hydrologically separated cave systems, investigating morphological (shell morphometrics) and genetic (COI, 16S) divergence together. The populations differed both morphologically and genetically: we found strong divergence in the relative width of the shell (best described by the variable “shell angle”) and a 6.4% divergence in COI. This provides strong support for the presence of two distinct taxa; however, it is still doubtful whether they differ at the species or the subspecies level. In one of the caves, we found representatives of both haplotypes (and phenotypes), which can be explained by secondary contact after an allopatric divergence.  相似文献

Phenotypic variation is important for evolutionary processes because it can allow local adaptation, promote genetic segregation, and ultimately give rise to speciation. Lacustrine systems provide a unique opportunity to study the mechanisms by which sister species can co‐occur by means of ecological segregation. The fish genus Astyanax is characterized by high levels of phenotypic variability, providing an excellent model for the study of local specialization. Here, we analyze the morphological specializations through geometric morphometrics of two sympatric species described as different genera: Bramocharax caballeroi endemic to Lake Catemaco, and the widely distributed Astyanax aeneus. Additionally, we assess the correlation between phenotypic and genetic structure, and the phylogenetic signal of morphological variation. We examined body size and shape variation in 196 individuals and analyzed mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences in 298 individuals. Our results confirm the striking morphological divergence among the sympatric characids. Differences between them were mainly found in the body depth and profile and orientation of the head, where B. caballeroi in contrast with the A. aeneus, presented a fusiform body and an upward mouth. Moreover, different growth trajectories were observed among morphotypes, suggesting that a heterochronic process could be involved in the diversification of our study system. Morphological differences did not correspond with the molecular differentiation, suggesting high levels of homoplasy among the lineages of B. caballeroi morphs. J.
