Secondary metabolites produced by plants for herbivore defence are often found in floral nectar, but their effect on the foraging behaviour and physiological performance of pollinators is largely unknown. Nicotine is highly toxic to most herbivores, and nicotine-based insecticides may contribute to current pollinator declines. We examined the effects of nectar nicotine on honeybee foraging choices and worker longevity. Free-flying honeybee (Apis mellifera scutellata) workers from six colonies were given a choice between multiple nicotine concentrations (0-1000 μM) in artificial nectar (0.15-0.63 M sucrose). The dose-dependent deterrent effect of nicotine was stronger in lower sugar concentrations, but even the highest nicotine concentrations did not completely repel honeybees, i.e., bees did not stop feeding on these diets. Nicotine in nectar acts as a partial repellent, which may keep pollinators moving between plants and enhance cross-pollination. In the second part of the study, newly emerged workers from 12 colonies were caged and fed one of four nicotine concentrations (0-300 μM) in 0.63 M sucrose for 21 days. Moderate (≤30 μM) nicotine concentrations had no significant detrimental effect, but high nicotine concentrations reduced the survival of caged workers and their nectar storage in the honey comb. In contrast, worker groups that survived poorly on sugar-only diets demonstrated increased survival on all nicotine diets. In the absence of alternative nectar sources, honeybees tolerate naturally occurring nectar nicotine concentrations; and low concentrations can even be beneficial to honeybees. However, high nicotine concentrations may have a detrimental effect on colony fitness.  相似文献

Social parasitism is widespread in the eusocial insects. Although social parasites often show a reduced worker caste, unmated workers can also parasitize colonies. Cape honeybee workers, Apis mellifera capensis, can establish themselves as social parasites in host colonies of other honeybee subspecies. However, it is unknown whether social parasitism by laying workers also occurs among Cape honeybee colonies. In order to address this question we genotyped worker offspring of six queenless A. m. capensis colonies and determined the maternity of the reproducing workers. We found that three non-nestmate workers dominated reproduction in a host colony and produced 62.5% of the progeny. Our results show that social parasitism by laying workers is a naturally occurring part of the biology of Cape honeybees. However, such social parasitism is not frequently found (6.41% of the total worker offspring) probably due to co-evolutionary processes among A. m. capensis resulting in an equilibrium between selection for reproductive dominance in workers, colony maintenance and queen adaptation. A leading hypothesis linking parasites to social evolution is that more genetically diverse social groups better resist parasites . Moreover, group diversity can encompass factors other than genetic variation that may also influence disease resistance. Here, we tested whether group diversity improved disease resistance in an ant species with natural variation in colony queen number. We formed experimental groups of workers and challenged them with the fungal parasite Metarhizium anisopliae . Workers originating from monogynous colonies (headed by a single queen and with low genetic diversity) had higher survival than workers originating from polygynous ones, both in uninfected groups and in groups challenged with M. anisopliae . However, an experimental increase of group diversity by mixing workers originating from monogynous colonies strongly increased the survival of workers challenged with M. anisopliae , whereas it tended to decrease their survival in absence of infection. This experiment suggests that group diversity, be it genetic or environmental, improves the mean resistance of group members to the fungal infection, probably through the sharing of physiological or behavioural defences.  相似文献

We previously identified a novel insect picorna-like virus, termed Kakugo virus (KV), from the brains of aggressive worker honeybees that had counterattacked a giant hornet. To survey the prevalence of KV in worker populations engaged in various labors, we quantified KV genomic RNA. KV was detected specifically from aggressive workers in some colonies, while it was also detected from other worker populations in other colonies where the amount of KV detected in the workers was relatively high, suggesting that KV can infect various worker populations in the honeybee colonies. To investigate whether the KV strains detected were identical, phylogenetic analysis was performed. There was less than a 2% difference in the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) sequences between KV strains from aggressive workers and those from other worker populations, suggesting that all of the viruses detected were virtually the same KV. We also found that some of the KV-infected colonies were parasitized by Varroa mites, and the sequences of the KV strains detected from the mites were the same as those detected from the workers of the same colonies, suggesting that the mites mediate KV prevalence in the honeybee colonies. KV strains had approximately 6% and 15% sequence differences in the RdRp region from deformed wing virus and Varroa destructor virus 1, respectively, suggesting that KV represents a viral strain closely related to, but distinct from, these two viruses.  相似文献

In honeybee colonies, reproduction is monopolized by the queen while her daughter workers are facultatively sterile. Caste determination is a consequence of environmental conditions during development, during which female larvae may become either queens or workers depending on their larval diet. This bipotency introduces significant variation in the reproductive potential of queen bees, with queens raised from young worker larvae exhibiting high reproductive potential and queens raised from older worker larvae exhibiting lower reproductive potential. We verify that low-quality queens are indeed produced from older worker larvae, as measured morphometrically (e.g., body size) and by stored sperm counts. We also show, for the first time, that low-quality queens mate with significantly fewer males, which significantly influences the resultant intracolony genetic diversity of the worker force of their future colonies. These results demonstrate a reproductive continuum of honeybee queens and provide insights into the reproductive constraints of social insects.  相似文献

Forty-eight male lambs were used to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation of mannanoligosaccharide (MOS) with or without parenteral Escherichia coli injection on their growth performance, feed conversion efficiency, blood metabolites, total serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels and antibody response. Lambs were randomly assigned to four groups of 12 animals each. In groups C (control) and CE (E. coli challenged), animals were fed commercial concentrate pellets and hay (50:50), and in groups M (MOS) and ME (MOS + E. coli challenged), animals were fed commercial concentrate pellets including MOS at 0.2% and hay (50:50). At day 15 and 30, animals in groups CE and ME were injected subcutaneously with 1 ml of phosphate buffered saline (PBS) suspension containing 10(6) cfu of heat inactivated non-toxigenic E. coli O157:H7, while animals in C and M groups were injected subcutaneously with 1 ml of PBS. The experimental period was 45 days. Data indicated that body weight of lambs at the end of the study were statistically non-significant among the groups. Blood metabolites, i.e. total protein, albumin, calcium and phosphorus concentrations were not affected significantly by MOS supplementation. However, administration E. coli lowered (p < 0.05) total protein, albumin and calcium concentrations in the serum on day 30. The IgG level was not different between groups. However, on day 45, the total IgG level was found to be higher (p < 0.05) in lambs that had received MOS and E. coli than in other groups. Application of MOS did not have any effect on the antibody response to E. coli as OD values.  相似文献

The ability to clone hapten-specific B cells in agar and to subsequently trigger their clonal progeny to antibody synthesis was investigated. Fluorescein (FL) specific B cells were purified on FL-gelatin dishes and cultured in semisolid agar for 6 to 7 days; individual colonies were then picked for restimulation in microculture. FL-specific B cells could be cloned as efficiently as unpurified splenic B cells. The number of colonies formed depended on the presence of sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) or E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the cultures. An additive number of colonies were observed with SRBC + LPS compared to that of SRBC or LPS alone. The colonies obtained from SRBC-containing cultures were stimulatable at high frequency by various FL-conjugated antigens to yield anti-FL PFC. However, colonies grown with LPS as the only additive were not stimulatable by any of the antigens tested. On the other hand, addition of M phi or SRBC as additional "mitogens" along with LPS in the agar resulted in progeny colonies that could respond in vitro. Although M phi did not increase the number of colonies, their presence enhanced the size and in some cases the frequency of stimulatable colonies. These data complement earlier observations in suggesting that different B cell subpopulations may grow under different cloning conditions. Moreover, the ability to stimulate the clonal progeny of single B cells to antibody synthesis should permit further definition of triggering and tolerance events at the single-cell level.  相似文献

Mutual policing, where group members suppress each others' reproduction, is hypothesized to be important in the origin and stabilization of biological complexity. Mutual policing among workers in social insects can reduce within-colony conflict. However, there are few examples. We tested for worker policing in the common wasp Vespula vulgaris. Workers rapidly removed worker-laid eggs but left most queen-laid eggs (four out of 120 worker eggs versus 106 out of 120 queen eggs remained after 1h). Ovary dissection (1150 workers from six colonies) revealed that a small but significant number of workers have active ovaries (4%) equivalent to approximately five to 25 workers per colony. Consistent with effective policing of worker reproduction, microsatellite analysis of males (270 individuals from nine colonies) detected no workers' sons. Worker policing by egg eating has convergently evolved in the common wasp and the honeybee suggesting that worker policing may have broad significance in social evolution. Unlike the honeybee, relatedness patterns in V. vulgaris do not explain selection for policing. Genetic analysis (340 workers in 17 nests) revealed that workers are equally related to the queen's and other workers' sons (worker-worker relatedness was 0.51 +/- 0.04, 95% confidence interval). Worker policing in V. vulgaris may be selected due to the colony-level benefit of conflict suppression.  相似文献

蜜蜂Apis mellifera L.蜂群中的工蜂卵巢发育和工蜂产卵现象受多种因素控制,了解其影响因素对养蜂生产具有重要意义。本研究将意大利蜜蜂蜂群设置为囚王群(tg1)、无王有子群(tg2)、无王无子群(tg3)以及正常有王蜂群(CK)4个试验组,通过对工蜂卵巢管的显微观察,确定不同处理组工蜂在不同时间段内卵巢的发育情况。结果表明:随着时间的延长,与CK处理组相比,tg3处理组中的工蜂卵巢发育水平最高,tg2次之,tg1最低;在31d时,4个处理组两两之间差异均达到显著水平(P<0.05)。tg1、tg2和tg3处理组中工蜂产卵前期时间分别为35、22和17d,而CK蜂群在试验期内未出现工蜂产卵现象;tg2和tg3处理组的工蜂产卵的封盖前期时间分别为8和6d,而tg1和CK组在试验期内未出现子房封盖现象。蜂群失王时间过长会刺激工蜂卵巢发育,并导致其产卵;蜂群的短期失王和蜂王老化也会刺激工蜂卵巢发育,但是刺激程度较低;蜂群中的蜂子能抑制工蜂卵巢管的发育,因此在蜂群短时间失王时可以适当地补充子脾延缓工蜂卵巢发育。  相似文献

Functional worker sterility is the defining feature of insect societies. Yet, workers are sometimes found reproducing in their own or foreign colonies. The proximate mechanisms underlying these alternative reproductive phenotypes are keys to understanding how reproductive altruism and selfishness are balanced in eusocial insects. In this study, we show that in honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies, the social environment of a worker, that is, the presence and relatedness of the queens in a worker's natal colony and in surrounding colonies, significantly influences her fertility and drifting behaviour. Furthermore, subfamilies vary in the frequency of worker ovarian activation, propensity to drift and the kind of host colony that is targeted for reproductive parasitism. Our results show that there is an interplay between a worker's subfamily, reproductive state and social environment that substantially affects her reproductive phenotype. Our study further indicates that honeybee populations show substantial genetic variance for worker reproductive strategies, suggesting that no one strategy is optimal under all the circumstances that a typical worker may encounter.  相似文献

The recent invasion by self-replicating socially parasitic Cape honeybee workers, Apis mellifera capensis, of colonies of the neighbouring African subspecies Apis mellifera scutellata represents an opportunity to study evolution of intraspecific parasitism in real time. As honeybee workers compete pheromonally for reproductive dominance, and as A. m. capensis workers readily produce queen-like pheromones, we hypothesized that these semiochemicals promoted the evolution of intraspecific social parasitism. Remarkably, the offspring of a single worker became established as a parasite in A. m. scutellata's range. This could have resulted from extreme selection among different clonal parasitic worker lineages. Using pheromonal contest experiments, we show that the selected parasitic lineage dominates in the production of mandibular gland pheromones over all other competitors to which it is exposed. Our results suggest that mandibular gland pheromones played a key role in the evolution of intraspecific social parasitism in the honeybee and in the selection of a single genotype of parasitic workers.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to compare the impact of febrile versus nonfebrile lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced bacterial infection at the time of global hemispheric hypoxic ischemia (GHHI) on the neural damage evoked by the GHHI insult. In the first study acute intraperitoneal (i.p.) sterile saline (SS) or LPS Escherichia coli (60 microg/kg) was given to groups of male, conscious Long Evans rats, and core (colonic, Tc) temperatures were monitored over 6 h postinjection. Peak febrile response occurred approximately 5 h after the LPS E. coli was injected. Upon sacrifice 7 days later, no hemispheric or regional brain damage occurred in the saline or LPS-injected groups of this first study. In the second study, GHHI was applied (ligation of right common carotid artery + 35 min of 12% O2) in groups of anesthetized, male Long Evans rats previously given an acute i.p. injection of sterile saline or 60 microg/kg LPS E. coli 5 h earlier. Temperatures (Tc) were monitored before, during, and 1.5 and 24 h following GHHI. The LPS-injected group was subdivided into a febrile (Tc > 38 degrees C before and (or) after GHHI) and nonfebrile (Tc < 38 degrees C before and after GHHI) subgroups. A significant correlation was found between the peak temperature rise from preinjection control values following drug administration of either saline or LPS E. coli and the resultant hemispheric damage caused by GHHI. Moreover, upon sacrifice 7 days later ipsilateral hemispheric and regional (i.e., hippocampal, thalamic) damage to GHHI of the febrile LPS E. coli group was significantly increased from respective hemispheric, hippocampal, and thalamic damage of the saline and nonfebrile, LPS groups given the same ischemic insult. Results suggest that the heightened Tc of a LPS infection at the time of global ischemia exacerbated the neural damage of GHHI, a finding similar to that reported with heightened core temperatures induced by external heating.  相似文献

The effects of Escherichia coli O55:B5, O127:B8, and O111:B4 serotypes' lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on body temperature were investigated in rats. LPSs were injected intraperitoneally at doses of 2, 50, and 250 microg/kg. A multiphasic and no-dose dependent increase in rectal temperature was observed in response to E. coli O55:B5 LPS at all doses, and in response to E. coli O127:B8 LPS at 2 and 50 microg/kg doses. The highest dose of the latter caused a dual change in rectal temperature, in which hypothermia preceded fever. E. coli O111:B4 LPS was either pyrogenic or hypothermic at 2 and 250 microg/kg doses; respectively, whereas a dual response was observed when the 50 microg/kg dose was injected. Although dual responses were observed after administration of all LPSs at 50 microg/kg dose when the body temperature was recorded by biotelemetry, the hypothermia induced by E. coli O55:B5 LPS was significantly smaller. These data suggest that LPSs induce dose and serotype-specific variable changes on body temperature in rats. This variability may be related to the structure of LPSs. The data also indicate that LPS causes hypothermia with or without fever in rats.  相似文献

Kin selection theory predicts that honeybee (Apis mellifera) workers should largely refrain from producing their own offspring, as the workers collectively have higher inclusive fitness if they rear the sons of their mother, the queen. Studies that have quantified levels of ovary activation and reproduction among workers have largely supported this prediction. We sampled pre‐emergent male pupae and adult workers from seven colonies at regular intervals throughout the reproductive part of the season. We show that the overall contribution of workers to male (drone) production is 4.2%, nearly 40 times higher than is generally reported, and is highest during reproductive swarming, when an average of 6.2% of the males genotyped are worker‐produced. Similarly, workers in our samples were 100 times more likely to have active ovaries than previously assumed. Worker reproduction is seasonally influenced and peaks when colonies are rearing new queens. Not all worker subfamilies contribute equally to reproduction. Instead, certain subfamilies are massively over‐represented in drone brood. By laying eggs within the period in which many colonies produce virgin queens, these rare worker subfamilies increase their direct fitness via their well‐timed sons.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of repeated oral exposure to LPS on humoral immune responses of periparturient dairy cows. Sixteen Holstein cows were assigned to two treatment groups 2 wk before the expected day of parturition. Cows were administered orally, twice weekly at wk -2, -1 and +1 around parturition, with the following treatments: 3 ml saline; or 3 ml of saline containing LPS from Escherichia coli 0111:B4. The amount of LPS administered during wk -2, -1, and +1 was 0.01, 0.05, or 0.1 μg/kg body weight, respectively. Multiple blood samples were collected by jugular vein and various immune and clinical variables were measured. Results indicated that, on one hand, concentrations of plasma IgG anti-LPS Abs decreased (P??0.05) in the concentrations of serum amyloid A, LPS-binding protein, haptoglobin, cortisol, IgA anti-LPS Abs in the plasma, feed intake, body temperature and rumen contractions rate between the control and treatment groups. To our knowledge, this study is the first to show that repeated oral administration with LPS from E. coli 0111:B4 has the potential to stimulate humoral immune responses in periparturient dairy cows.  相似文献

In many species of social Hymenoptera, totipotency of workers induces potential conflicts over reproduction. However, actual conflicts remain rare despite the existence of a high reproductive skew. One of the current hypotheses assumes that conflicts are costly and thus selected against. We studied the costs of conflicts in 20 colonies of the queenless ant Diacamma sp. "nilgiri" by testing the effects of conflicts on labor and worker immunocompetence, two parameters closely linked to the indirect fitness of workers. In this species, the dominant female is the only mated worker (gamergate) and monopolizes reproduction. We experimentally induced conflicts by splitting each colony into two groups, a control group containing the gamergate and an orphaned group displaying aggressions until a new dominant worker arises. Immunocompetence was assessed by the clearance of Escherichia coli bacteria that we injected into the ants. Time budget analysis revealed a lower rate of labor and especially brood care in orphaned groups, supporting the existence of a cost of conflicts on labor. Fifteen days after splitting, a lower immunocompetence was also found in orphaned groups, which concerned workers involved and not involved in conflicts. We propose that this immunosuppression induced by conflicts could stem from stress and not directly from aggression.  相似文献

Honeybee workers, Apis mellifera, can reproduce in queenless colonies. The production of queen-like pheromones may be associated with their reproductive activity and induce nestmates to respond by feeding them. Such frequent trophallaxis could supply their protein needs for oogenesis, constituting a social pathway to worker reproduction. However, some individuals can develop ovaries without producing queen pheromones. The consumption of protein-rich pollen could be an alternative solitary pathway for them to satisfy this dietary requirement. In order to investigate the way in which workers obtain proteins for oogenesis, we created orphaned worker groups and determined ovarian and pheromonal development in relation to pollen consumption of selected workers. Individuals that did not consume pollen had significantly more developed ovaries and produced significantly more queen mandibular pheromone than workers that fed directly on pollen. Our results suggest that workers producing queen-like secretions are fed trophallactically. However, reproductive workers that lacked queen pheromones had consumed little or no pollen, suggesting that they also obtained trophallaxis. Although pollen consumption might contribute to sustaining oogenesis, it does not appear to be sufficient. Trophallaxis as a means of obtaining proteins seems to be necessary to attain reproductive status in queenless honeybee colonies.  相似文献

本文对蜜蜂群内生殖分工体系的形成及其维持机制进行综述。蜜蜂群体具有完善的劳动分工(包括生殖分工)体系,蜂王垄断生殖权力,而工蜂生殖器官发育不完全,在蜂王信息素和幼虫信息素的作用下产卵受到抑制。蜂王的多雄交配机制降低了群内个体间的亲缘关系,但也促进了工蜂间相互监督机制的形成。工蜂间的相互监督,结合蜂王和幼虫信息素对工蜂卵巢发育的影响,解决了蜂王与工蜂、工蜂与工蜂间的生殖利益冲突,保障了蜂群内的生殖分工体系,提高了群体效率,维护了蜂群的真社会性。  相似文献

Mutualistic associations among nonkin can form when animalsin groups have a greater chance of overcoming challenges presentedby the environment than do solitary animals. Colony foundingby small groups of unrelated queens, a habit documented in severalspecies of ants, is often interpreted as a mutualistic interactionselected by intense competition among incipient colonies. However,many new colonies in these species are founded in areas wheretheir chief enemies are mature ant colonies, rather than othernewly founded colonies. In this study, we tested whether groupnest-founding in the fire ant Solenopsis invicta improved theability of queens to survive attacks by mature colonies. Inthe laboratory, queens in groups of three were more likely thansolitary queens to survive attacks by workers of the nativefire ant Solenopsis geminata. When newly mated queens were establishedexperimentally in the field, workers from mature S. invictacolonies caused the majority of queen deaths. Queens in groupsof two, but not in groups of four, had higher survival ratesthan did solitary queens during the period between colony establishmentand the appearance of the first workers. The advantage of cooperativedefense approximately counterbalanced the disadvantages causedby competition within foundress associations of two to threequeens. Previous studies have shown that colonies founded bymultiple queens produce larger worker populations than coloniesfounded by solitary queens; however, experimentally increasingworker number in incipient colonies had no effect on colonysurvival in the field.  相似文献
