The phylloclade anatomy of nine Brazilian species of the genus Phyllanthus section Choretropsis was studied, and its systematic significance was analysed. The arrangement of epidermal cells varied according to the species, with the guard cells of the stomatal apparatus distributed randomly or with the longitudinal axis parallel to the branch. In both branch types, the stomata were distributed on the phylloclade surface, except in P. gladiatus which showed hypostomatic branches. In most of the species, phylloclades developed a vascular system surrounded by clusters of fibres and cortical parenchyma, which could differentiate into palisade‐like tissue and ground tissue like a true leaf blade. The distribution of the vascular system followed the cylindrical or flattened diameter shape of the branch. In subsection Choretropsis, the cylindrical branches of P. choretroides, contrary to other species, developed a second ring formed by clusters of fibres surrounded by large parenchymal cells. In subsection Applanata, the palisade‐like cells of P. flagelliformis phylloclades acquired an isodiametric shape. The highest level of specialization was observed in P. gladiatus, which developed phylloclades with a dorsiventral structure, a main vein, and small sets of lateral vascular bundles like a typical leaf blade. The tissue arrangement of different species showed a gradual pattern, which was correlated with the different branch morphology and plant architecture. Despite the transitional pattern, it was suggested that some of the phylloclades had an independent origin and convergent evolution in the Choretropsis section. The anatomy of different branch types was shown to be useful, either in isolation or in association with other morphological characters, to delimit the species and to further understand their relationships and phylogeny. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 157 , 91–102.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of Phyllanthus (Euphorbiaceae) section Choretropsis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The pollen grain morphology of the eight South American species of the genus Phyllanthus , subgenus Phyllanthus , section Choretropsis , endemic to Brazil, was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The high homogeneity in pollen shape, as well as aperture number and configuration, allowed the definition of a basic pollen type for this section, viz. prolate spheroidal or subprolate, zonocolporate with 4–5 invaginated colpi, sexine reticulate. Two subtypes have been observed, based on pollen grain apertures and exine sculpture. The first subtype is characterized by straight and narrow colpi provided with costae, lalongate endoapertures and a reticulum of rectilineous muri as in P. choretroides and P. spartioides . The second subtype has wider colpi without costae, circular endoapertures and a reticulum with curvilineous muri as in P. flagelliformis , P. goianensis and P. scoparius , or curvilineous-rectilineous muri as in P. angustissimus , P. gladiatus and P. klotzschianus . It was demonstrated that the pollen shape and the number of colpi varied within and between some of the species. The results suggest that pollen grain morphology, in association with plant architecture and the presence of phylloclades, constitute additional evidence to delimit the species of the section Choretropsis and to further understand their evolutionary origin within the genus Phyllanthus.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 144 , 243–250.  相似文献

In order to provide new insights into phylogenetic relationships among the neotropical taxa of Phyllanthus , 28 illustrations are provided of the pollen grains of 22 selected species studied from 11 sections of the subgenera represented in the neotropics. Special attention has been given to subgenus Conami because of its variability in pollen morphology: of eight species illustrated, the apertures are diploporate colpi in three species and pores in five species; exine ornamentation is vermiculate in two species and pilate in the other six species. The six species in the neotropical sections Pityrocladus and Microglochidion (subgenus Emblica ) are characterized by prolate grains with an increased number of colpi (4–8). Of particular interest are species in which the pollen exine is clypeate (with exine shields); clypeate pollen grains are illustrated in two species of subgenus Xylophylla and in one species of section Cyclanthera that has unique exine shields with single central pila. The pollen of the one Brazilian phylloclade-bearing species illustrated (in section Choretropsis ) has 3-colporate grains with reticulate exine, typical for subgenus Phyllanthus , and very different from the clypeate grains of the West Indian phylloclade-bearing species in section Xylophylla . This pollen evidence clearly demonstrates homoplasy in the origin of phylloclades in Phyllanthus . Pollen morphological data suggest that the neotropical taxa of Phyllanthus have arisen following colonization from Africa (subgenus Kirganelia ) and Asia (subgenus Emblica ). © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 138 , 325–338.

An efficient micropropagation protocol was developed for the medicinal plant Phyllanthus caroliniensis (Euphorbiaceae) using nodal segments for axillary shoot proliferation. Maximum multiplication (21–23 shoots per explant) was achieved on MS or AR media supplemented with either 5.0 μM BA, 1.25–5.0 μM kinetin or 2.5–5.0 μM 2iP. Rooting was achieved with 80–100% of the microshoots on MS medium without growth regulators, although 1.25 μM NAA and 1.25–5.0 μM IAA promoted significant increases in the number of roots per explant. Regenerated plants were successfully acclimatized and about 88% of plantlets survived under ex vitro conditions. Flowering was observed on in vitro grown plantlets and after 3–4 weeks of acclimatization. High frequency callus initiation and growth was achieved when nodal segment explants were inoculated in the vertical position on MS medium supplemented with 5.0 μM 2,4-D. Root cultures were successfully established on MS medium containing 1.1 μM NAA. The optimized micropropagation, callus and root culture protocols offer the possibility to use cell/root culture techniques for vegetative propagation and secondary metabolism studies. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

About half a dozen obligate pollination mutualisms between plants and their seed-consuming pollinators are currently recognized, including fig-fig wasp, yucca-yucca moth, and the recently discovered Glochidion tree-Epicephala moth mutualisms. A common principle among these interactions is that the pollinators consume only a limited amount of the seed crop within a developing fruit (or fig in the case of fig-fig wasp mutualism), thereby ensuring a net benefit to plant reproduction. A novel obligate, seed-parasitic pollination mutualism between two species of New Caledonian Phyllanthus (Euphorbiaceae), a close relative of Glochidion, and Epicephala moths (Gracillariidae) is an exception to this principle. The highly specialized flowers of Phyllanthus are actively and exclusively pollinated by species-specific Epicephala moths, whose larvae consume all six ovules of the developing fruit. Some flowers pollinated by the moths remain untouched, and thus a fraction of the fruits is left intact. Additional evidence for a similar association of Epicephala moths in other Phyllanthus species suggests that this interaction is a coevolved, species-specific pollination mutualism. Implications for the evolutionary stability of the system, as well as differences in mode of interaction with respect to the Glochidion-Epicephala mutualism, are discussed.  相似文献

Efficient micropropagation, callus culture and root culture protocols were developed for the medicinal plant Phyllanthus urinaria(Euphorbiaceae) using single node explants. Maximum multiplication (16–20 shoots per explant) was achieved on Murashige and Skoog media supplemented with 5.0 M kinetin. Murashige and Skoog and Anderson Rhododendron media promoted significant shoot culture growth in terms of numbers of shoots and nodes produced per explant. Rooting was achieved with 93–100% of the microshoots on Murashige and Skoog medium without growth regulators, although 1.25–5.0 M -naphthaleneacetic acid significantly increased the number of roots per explant. Regenerated plants were successfully acclimatized and 91% of plantlets survived under ex vitro conditions. Flowering was observed on micropropagated plants after 3–4 weeks of acclimatization. High frequency callus initiation and growth was achieved when single node explants were inoculated in the horizontal position on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 5.0 M indole-3-butyric acid. Other auxins such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and -naphthaleneacetic acid promoted moderate callus fresh weight increase, when used separately. Root cultures were successfully established on Murashige and Skoog medium containing 1.1 M -naphthaleneacetic acid. The optimized micropropagation, callus culture and root culture protocols offer the possibility to use cell/root culture techniques for vegetative propagation and secondary metabolism studies.  相似文献

Premise of the study: Microsatellite markers were isolated and characterized in a medicinal plant, Phyllanthus emblica, to study population genetics for designing an effective in situ and ex situ conservation of genetic resources of the species. • Methods and Results: Six microsatellite markers were developed using an enrichment and magnetic separation protocol. They were characterized in two natural populations of P. emblica. Out of the six microsatellites, five showed polymorphism, with the number of alleles ranging from four to seven. Observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.360 to 0.760 and 0.499 to 0.806, respectively. • Conclusions: The five polymorphic microsatellite markers will be useful for studying the genetic structure, reproductive biology, and for identification of clones and provenances of this important medicinal plant.  相似文献

GOYDER, D. J., 1987. A revision of Arenaria section Plinthine (Coryophyllaceae). The systematics of Arenaria section Plinthine are reviewed and a classification is presented, based on detailed field and herbarium studies. Members of the section are found on the mountains of SW Europe and N Africa. Seven taxa are recognized within five species: A. alfacarensis, A. tetraquetra subsp. tetraquetra, A. tetraquetra subsp. amabilis, A. armerina, A. aggregata subsp. aggregata, A. aggregata subsp. erinacea , and A. querioides. Arenaria armerina and A. aggregata subsp. erinacea are extremely polymorphic and include minor morphological variants which have been treated as separate species in previous systematic treatments of the group.  相似文献

Seven phenolic compounds, 1 – 7 , including a new organic acid gallate, mucic acid 1‐ethyl 6‐methyl ester 2‐O‐gallate ( 7 ), were isolated from the MeOH extract of the fruits of Phyllanthus emblica L. (Euphorbiaceae). The structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison with literature data. Upon evaluated for their antioxidant abilities by 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′‐azinobis(3‐ethylbenzthiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The inhibitory activities against melanogenesis in B16 melanoma cells induced by α‐MSH, as well as cytotoxic activities against four human cancer cell lines were also evaluated. All phenolic compounds, 1 – 7 , exhibited potent antioxidant abilities (DPPH: IC50 5.6 – 12.9 μm ; ABTS: 0.87 – 8.43 μm Trolox/μm ; FRAP: 1.01 – 5.79 μm Fe2+/μm , respectively). Besides, 5 – 7 , also exhibited moderate inhibitory activities against melanogenesis (80.7 – 86.8% melanin content), even with no or low toxicity to the cells (93.5 – 101.6% cell viability) at a high concentration of 100 μm . Compounds 1 – 3 exhibited cytotoxic activity against one or more cell lines (IC50 13.9 – 68.4%), and compound 1 with high tumor selectivity for A549 (SI 3.2).  相似文献
