Two comparable methods were used to study the feeding of four species of Daphnia on large spherical particles which differed in size and hardness. The first method used gut analysis to estimate the selectivities of daphnids feeding in a broad size range of a single particle type, including polystyrene beads (4–60 µm diameter) in the laboratory and Eudorina colonies (10–90 µm) in the field. In the second method, Daphnia of different sizes fed in a mixture of 6.5 µm Chlamydomonas and one of eight test particles. Smaller daphnids were less effective in feeding on large test particles. Nonlinear regression was therefore used to estimate the Daphnia body size at which the clearance rate on a test particle was reduced to 50% of that for Chlamydomonas. The results of both methods show that prey size and hardness are both very important in determining daphnid feeding selectivity. For a given particle size, soft algae (naked and gelatinous flagellates) are more readily ingested than hard algae (diatoms and dinoflagellates), and hard algae are more readily ingested than polystyrene beads. Daphnia can feed effectively on algae that are 2–5 times larger than the largest ingestible bead.  相似文献

In the shallow and eutrophic subtropical aquatic ecosystems, which it generally inhabits, the omnivorous copepod Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides encounters a wide variety of animal prey types including ciliates, rotifers, and cladocerans. We studied prey selectivity in laboratory-reared adult females of this species given a choice of (i) prey types belonging to different taxa (ciliates, rotifers, cladocerans, and cyclopoid nauplii), and (ii) different prey species within a taxonomic group differing in body size, morphology or behaviour. We also tested the effect of different proportions of prey species on its selectivity. Prey type proportion had no significant effect on selectivity of the copepod, nor was there any evidence of switching based on the relative abundance of prey. Among the ciliate prey species tested, the largest species, Stylonychia mytilus was positively selected regardless of its relative abundance, while the smallest, S. notophora was selected only when its density was higher. Offered a choice of three species of a brachionid rotifer differing in size, the copepod selected the largest of them, Brachionus calyciflorus, and avoided the smallest B. angularis. The evasive rotifer Hexarthra mira was also avoided. When prey choice included three cladoceran species Daphnia similoides, Moina macrocopa and Ceriodaphnia cornuta, the copepod selected the intermediate-sized M. macrocopa regardless of the abundance of the other two species. Although it fed on Mesocyclops nauplii when there was no choice, M. thermocyclopoides avoided them when alternative food was available. In a multispecies prey choice test, the copepod selected predominantly the rotifer B. calyciflorus and the cladoceran M. macrocopa. We suggest that the prey selectivity patterns shown by M. thermocyclopoides are adaptive in that they lead to ingestion of the most profitable prey.  相似文献

A major question in our understanding of eukaryotic biodiversity is whether small bodied taxa have cosmopolitan distributions or consist of geographically localized cryptic taxa. Here, we explore the global phylogeography of the freshwater cladoceran Polyphemus pediculus (Linnaeus, 1761) (Crustacea, Onychopoda) using two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16s ribosomal RNA, and one nuclear marker, 18s ribosomal RNA. The results of neighbour‐joining and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses reveal an exceptionally pronounced genetic structure at both inter‐ and intra‐continental scales. The presence of well‐supported, deeply divergent phylogroups across the Holarctic suggests that P. pediculus represents an assemblage of at least nine, largely allopatric cryptic species. Interestingly, all phylogenetic analyses support the reciprocal paraphyly of Nearctic and Palaearctic clades. Bayesian inference of ancestral distributions suggests that P. pediculus originated in North America or East Asia and that European lineages of Polyphemus were established by subsequent intercontinental dispersal events from North America. Japan and the Russian Far East harbour exceptionally high levels of genetic diversity at both regional and local scales. In contrast, little genetic subdivision is apparent across the formerly glaciated regions of Europe and North America, areas that historical demographic analyses suggest that were recolonized just 5500–24 000 years ago.  相似文献

Freshwater cladocerans and rotifers were used as prey to study functional response and prey selection by adult females of Chirocephalus diaphanus under laboratory conditions. For functional response studies, we offered three rotifer species (Brachionus calyciflorus, B. patulus and Euchlanis dilatata) and three cladoceran species (Alona rectangula, Ceriodaphnia dubia and Moina macrocopa) at various densities ranging from 0.5 to 16 ind. ml–1. We found increased zooplankton consumption with increasing prey density but beyond 4 ind ml–1 cladocerans and 8 ind. ml–1 rotifers, the number of animals eaten plateaued. In general, C. diaphanus consumed fewer large prey (cladocerans) and many more smaller zooplankton (rotifers). For prey selection experiments, we used B. calyciflrous, B. patulus, C. dubia and M. macrocopa, offered at the ratio of two rotifers: one cladoceran and at three prey densities (total zooplankton numbers: 3, 6 and 12 ind. ml–1). Prey selectivity patterns followed the functional response trends. In general, regardless of prey types, with an increase in the available zooplankton, there was an increase in the number of prey consumed. At any given prey density, C. diaphanus consumed higher numbers of rotifers than cladocerans. Among the prey offered, B. patulus and M. macrocopa were positively selected. Results are discussed in light of possible control of zooplankton by anostracans in temporary ponds.  相似文献

The food selection and diet of juvenile three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) was studied in the littoral of a brackish-water sea area. The sampling stations were located in a eutrophicated area, where the plankton was characterized by rotifers, in a noneutrophicated zone, where copepods predominated, and in the intermediate zone, characterized by cladocerans. In all areas the fish preferred microcrustaceans to rotifers, but they did not feed strictly according to the size-selection hypothesis. Nor did they take the most abundant prey species. With some exceptions the species chiefly eaten by and also selected by fish, were those which had the largest biomass in the plankton.  相似文献

Competition experiments showed that the small cladoceran Scapholeberis kingi rapidly excluded the rotifer Synchaeta oblonga from mixed-species cultures, but was itself unaffected by the presence of S. oblonga. Short-term experiments testing the effect of S. kingi on the survivorship and reproduction of S. oblonga showed that the former imposed a high mortality on the latter, even though shared food resources were abundant. These results indicate that adult S. kingi mechanically interferes with S. oblonga either by ingesting, or by rejecting in a damaged condition, individuals swept into its branchial chamber. In contrast to many other small species of cladocerans, and like large species of Daphnia, S. kingi has the potential to markedly suppress populations of some rotifer species through a combination of interference and exploitative competition.  相似文献

Parabroteas sarsi is a predaceous calanoid copepod commonly found in South Andes lakes. Feeding experiments were carried out in order to estimate the predation rates and attack patterns on different cladoceran prey. Predation rates were related with prey sizes. The smallest prey, Bosmina longirostris, was ingested up to 5 prey pred–1 h–1 while the largest, Daphnia middendorffiana, only at 0.12 prey pred–1 h–1. The functional response of P. sarsi differed when confronted with different prey although in all cases, the number of kills increased with prey density. A saturation of ingestion rates at high prey densities was only observed for B. longirostris and Ceriodaphnia dubia juveniles. Remains seldom appeared at the end of the experiments, implying that the predator consumed prey totally. Yet, in all experiments carried out with Daphnia ambigua and D. middendorffiana, remains, including soft parts, were found. Direct observations of attack and of number and types of remains showed interference of handling by tail, helmet, and size of the prey.  相似文献

Publications in Russian on the influence of epibiontic rotifers on cladocerans as well as on predator-prey interrelations between cladocerans and rotifers are reviewed. Proales daphnicola and Brachionus rubens are common epibionts of Cladocera. The biology of these species is described including the choice of host, feeding, reproduction and impact on the host. Representatives of the families Daphniidae and Moinidae are most readily colonized. At high densities of epibiontic rotifers, a high percentage of young Cladocera die. Predators consuming cladocerans (mainly Bosminidae) belong to the family Asplanchnidae. Rotifers are consumed by the predatory cladocerans Leptodora and Polyphemus. The results of functional response experiments by the author with P. pediculus feeding on Synchaeta pectinata, Asplanchna priodonta, colonial and solitary Conochilus unicornis, and Platyias patulus are given. In the range of prey densities of 100–1600 1–1 a functional response was found in all the rotifers except P. patulus. Colonies of C. unicornis were not consumed. The highest level of feeding rate saturation was observed in Synchaeta pectinata. Various adaptations in prey morphology prevented effective predation: coloniality, large size of the prey and hard lorica with spines.  相似文献

Functional response curves of fourth instar larvae ofChaoborus flavicans preying on two size classes ofDaphnia longispina were examined throughout three summer seasons in a small forest lake. Data for each size class were fitted to Holling's disc equation. The parametersa (attack rate) andTh (handling time) were calculated for each prey size from these curves. Attack rate was greater and handling time was shorter for small (0.77 mm) than for large (1.82 mm)Daphnia. In 1:1 mixture of these prey size classes the predation rates ofChaoborus on smallDaphnia at prey densities above 20 l–1 were greater than predicted from the single size-class experiments. The observed predation rates on largeDaphnia were lower than predicted at all prey densities. Since both single size-class and two size-class experiments were run during the same period of time the difference in observed and predicted predation rates could not be attributed to seasonal changes in prey preference ofChaoborus larvae. In experiments with a concentrated mixture of lake zooplankton (dominated byD. longispina)Chaoborus preference forDaphnia decreased as prey body size increased. There was no obvious correlation between selectivity coefficients and size-frequency distributions ofDaphnia. When medium-sizedDaphnia were omitted from calculations the preference of small over large prey did not differ significantly from the predictions of the single size-class model.  相似文献

Pelecus cultratus (razor fish), a cyprinid fish, has become a dominant species in Neusiedler See. Gut content analyses of 400 specimens collected in 1989 and 1990 showed that Pelecus fed mainly on large zooplankton (Diaphanosoma, Leptodora and Arctodiaptomus), although their diet also included Insecta (larvae, pupae and adults) and Arachnida (spiders), occasionally small fishes. Comparison of the relative abundance of the zooplankton species in the stomach to the lake indicated that Pelecus strongly selected cladocerans over copepods, and fed mostly on large-sized individuals of Diaphanosoma, Leptodora and Arctodiaptomus. The fish showed a significant positive selectivity only for individuals of Diaphanosoma > 1.0 mm and Leptodora > 4.0 mm. In contrast, selectivity increased continuously in relation to the diameter of the compound eye of both prey species. This suggested that prey visibility was a key factor in determining the prey selectivity by Pelecus. It also seems likely that the persistence of the Leptodora population in Neusiedler See can be attributed to negligible predation pressure on the smaller sized individuals of this species.  相似文献

Described are a method and apparatus that allowin situ measurement of predation on zooplankton byMysis relicta. The method, which can be generalized to other predators, involves lowering paired large-volume (30-1) plankton traps to the depth of interest, with subsequent trapping of the ambient zooplankton assemblage in each trap and release of predators into one of the traps. The statistical adequacy of the method was shown by error propagation theory to depend on the percentage of available prey consumed, on the number of prey captured by the traps, and on the distribution of zooplankton within the volume of water captured by the traps. Repeated casts of the apparatus showed that, in contrast to other studies of zooplankton distribution, various zooplankton categories were statistically underdispersed (evenly dispersed in space) or at least not more statistically dispersed (clumped) than was a random distribution at a space scale of 1 m. An error analysis of many replicated feeding experiments showed that the errors obtained were reasonably small and that they conformed with or were less than those predicted by error propagation theory that assumed random distribution of zooplankton. Thus, these results supported the practical application of the method and corroborated the conclusion of random dispersion or underdispersion drawn from the experiment of repeated casts of the apparatus.  相似文献

The mechanisms underlying differential prey selection of two microcrustaceans by the common bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris) were studied in the laboratory. Functional response experiments with single prey showed that Utricularia had a higher attack rate coefficient and a longer handling time coefficient with the cladoceran Polyphemus pediculus than with the cyclopoid copepod Eucyclops serrulatus. Observation of predation rate, defined as number of prey eaten per unit time, from direct behavioural observation on single prey species, showed a higher predation rate with Polyphemus than on Eucyclops, at low prey densities. The opposite pattern was found at high prey density. When the two prey were presented simultaneously to the predator, Eucyclops was preferred over Polyphemus. Results from the situation with two prey and some of the results from the direct behavioural observations support field data on the diet of Utricularia, which shows that cyclopoid copepods are selected more frequently than Polyphemus.  相似文献

Clumped patches of the oligochaete, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, were subjected to predation by the leech, Erpobdella punctata to determine how the dispersion pattern might change. Two separate experiments showed that worms left the patch in 39% and 48% greater numbers when the leech predator was present. This suggests that L. hoffmeisteri uses a antipredatory strategy of dispersal rather than clumping.  相似文献

Using silhouette video photography we have made the first quantitativeobservations of foraging behavior in Leptodora kindti, a predaceouscladoceran (Haplopoda). Leptodora swims with a mean velocityof 13.4?4.0 mm s–1 and initiates an attack only upon directcontact with potential prey. The attack sequence is as follows:Leptodora swims randomly through the water column with all fivepairs of thorac appendages spread to form a ‘feeding basket’and, seemingly by chance, encounters prey. Shortly after preymake contact with any part of Leptodora's body (usually ventral),the abdomen is rapidly pulled forward, clamping itself underthe feeding basket so that the telson closes it at the posteriorend. The duration of this movement is always the same and weconclude that it is an indiscriminate reflex. If the prey isencountered anywhere but a short distance directly in frontand slightly below the Leptodora, it is not captured. The speedof copepod escape responses effectively allows them to avoidcontact with the predator. Daphnia's escape response, particularlythat of juveniles, is slower and leaves them far more susceptibleto Leptodora predation.  相似文献

Summary Rhinanthus minor (Yellow-rattle) was grown in replacement series mixtures with Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens. The hemiparasitic interaction resulted in Relative Yield Totals (the sum of the yields in mixture relative to those in monoculture) considerably above 2. The hemiparasite caused a greater decrease in the yield of the legume and also performed better on the legume, indicating that T. repens was a better host for R. minor than L. perenne under the experimental conditions. When L. perenne and T. repens were grown in binary mixture with or without R. minor the hemiparasite affected considerably the competitive relationship between the two species by selectively parasitizing the legume. The effect of R. minor on competition between the two species was, however, dependent upon the nutrient status of the soil: the higher the level of soil nitrogen the fewer haustorial connections were made with T. repens and the less was the depression in its yield. In another series of experiments in which Festuca rubra, Holcus lanatus and L. perenne were grown in various binary mixtures with or without R. minor it was also shown that the yield of a preferred host was depressed to the advantage of a non-preferred host. It is suggested that the mediation of competition by the hemiparasite provides a mechanism by which it might affect the structure and diversity of plant communities.  相似文献

The alien Asian gastropod Rapana venosa (Valenciennes 1846) was first recorded in 1973 along the Italian coast of the Northern Adriatic Sea. Recently, this predator of bivalves has been spreading all around the world oceans, probably helped by ship traffic and aquaculture trade. A caging experiment in natural environment was performed during the summer of 2002 in Cesenatico (Emilia-Romagna, Italy) in order to estimate consumption rates and prey preference of R. venosa. The prey items chosen were the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck 1819), the introduced carpet clam Tapes philippinarum (Adams and Reeve 1850), both supporting the local fisheries, and the Indo-Pacific invasive clam Anadara (Scapharca) inaequivalvis (Bruguière 1789). Results showed an average consumption of about 1 bivalve prey per day (or 1.2 g wet weight per day). Predation was species and size selective towards small specimens of A. inaequivalvis; consumption of the two commercial species was lower. These results might reduce the concern about the economical impact on the local bivalve fishery due to the presence of the predatory gastropod. On the other hand, selective predation might probably alter local community structure, influencing competition amongst filter feeder/suspension feeder bivalve species and causing long-term ecological impact. The large availability of food resource and the habitat characteristics of the Emilia-Romagna littoral makes this area an important breeding ground for R. venosa in the Mediterranean Sea, thus worthy of consideration in order to understand the bioinvasion ecology of this species and to control its likely further dispersal.  相似文献

Summary Rhinanthus minor (Yellow-rattle) is a widespread hemiparasitic plant of grassland habitats throughout Britain. Association analysis of the dune vegetation at Holme-next-the-Sea in eastern England revealed only two potential host plants through positive association. In contrast direct examination of the root systems revealed haustorial connections with 20 host species. The number of species parasitized by one plant ranged from one to seven. Data from another four sites in Britain and one in central Europe indicate that the natural host range of R. minor encompasses at least 50 species from 18 families with 22% in the Leguminosae and 30% in the Gramineae. Comparison of the number of haustorial connections made to each species with the abundance of roots in the soil shows that R. minor is a highly selective parasite, but that the selectivity is not consistent between populations or between plants from different parts of the same population. The reasons for host selectivity are discussed.  相似文献

In spite of its wide distribution, Geoffroy's cat (Oncifelis geoffroyi) has been recently upgraded from Least Concern IUCN category to Near Threatened because of lack of knowledge. In this study, we examine at the Mar Chiquita Biosphere Reserve (37° 46`S, 57° 27`W; Argentina) their seasonal diet, and their feeding preference in relation to waterbird abundance, size, and distance of waterbird prey before attack. The diet, evaluated by feces analysis, was comprised of 42% waterbirds and 40% small mammals. The relative importance of waterbirds in the diet changed throughout the year associated with seasonal fluctuations in their availability. Predation on waterbirds increased from autumn to summer, while predation on small mammals decreased during this period. Trophic-niche breadth for prey occurrence was higher in autumn and lower in spring. We found that abundance, distance of waterbird prey before attack, and prey size were significant predictors of waterbird consumption by the Geoffroy's cat. This small cat appears to change its kill rate in relation to waterbird abundance changes. The overconsumption of prey close to vegetation and big prey indicates selective predatory behavior by this cat.  相似文献

Large planktonic Cladocera are typically the most important components of the diet of underyearling roach. Selection for large species and individuals by fish can result in a shift in the species composition of the cladoceran community as well as a reduction in the mean size of the individuals of large species and in the assemblage as a whole. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that underyearlings feeding on Daphnia hyalina smaller than 1 mm in length has a significantly lower intake of prey volume per unit time than when feeding on prey greater than 1.5 mm. A decrease in the nutritional quality of zooplankton prey, brought about by increasing predation pressure is suggested as the mechanism for density-dependent reductions in the growth of underyearling roach in eutrophic water bodies.  相似文献
