Depth profiles of Fe, Mn, (HS)t, Cu and Cd concentrations in pore water were determined on a seasonal scale in intertidal sediments of Ria Formosa. Concentrations of Cu and Cd were also determined in near-bottom water during the short period that water inundates the sediment. A maximum near the sediment-water interface was observed in depth profiles of Mn and Fe concentrations followed by a decrease with depth. Otherwise, depth profiles of (HS)t were irregular but peak concentrations was observed below Mn and Fe maximum. Although subsurface maximum was observed at deeper layers for Cu and Cd, the profiles shape varied among sites and sampling dates. This suggests site specificity and alterations associated with early diagenetic reactions. In order to assess exchanges of Cu and Cd across the sediment water interface, diffusive fluxes and advective transport were estimated. Both contribute substantially to the daily transfer of Cd from intertidal sediments to the water column of Ria Formosa. In the case of Cu, the flux associated with tidal flooding (advective flux) was the major contributor. Presumably, the exchange of trace elements between the sediment-water interface in intertidal areas of macro- and meso-tidal systems are underestimated since do not take into consideration the pulse contribution associated with tidal flooding.  相似文献

During an annual cycle, flux rates of oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate and silicate were measured in light and dark bell jars at three sites in Ria Formosa (Algarve, Portugal) enclosing either a natural macrophytic community (macroalgae on sand or mud, a seagrass bed of Zostera noltii) or bare sediments. The results are compared with a preceeding study in which the same bell jar technique has been applied in the Sylt-Rømø Bay of the northern Wadden Sea. Nitrate flux was mainly directed from the water column to the benthic communities in Ria Formosa, as well as in the Sylt-Rømø Bay. However, nitrate uptake was higher in the northern, more eutrophic study area. In Ria Formosa, nutrient concentrations were lower than in the Sylt-Rømø Bay possibly due to strong water exchange with Atlantic waters. High temperatures and strong insolation had a greater impact on nitrate fluxes in Ria Formosa than in the Sylt-Rømø Bay. Bioturbating macrofauna increased ammonium efflux in the Sylt- Rømø Bay while this effect was not as pronounced in the Ria Formosa study sites. Benthic phosphate uptake dominated in the Ria Formosa and was correlated to initial phosphate concentrations in incoming waters. At both study sites, oxygen and nutrient fluxes were correlated with temperature. Additionally, flux rates were strongly influenced by biotic components and levels of eutrophication. A literature survey showed that mainly in temperate regions, material fluxes increase with temperature, whereas in warmer areas, ammonium and phosphate fluxes between sediment and water were generally lower.  相似文献

Levels of tPCB and organic matter content were determined in surface sediments from Sado and Tagus estuaries and Ria Formosa lagoon, and in particles collected in sediment traps in Ria Formosa. Significant relationships (p<0.001) between concentrations of tPCB and organic matter content were obtained when the most contaminated samples and the less contaminated organic-rich sediments were excluded. The excluded samples originated from nearby PCB and organic matter sources. Organic matter appears, thus, the most important indicator of a sediment's sorptive capacity in these estuarine systems, except near the sources where the organic seeking effect is masked. On the basis of the relationship slopes one may conclude that Tagus and Sado estuaries are more contaminated than Alcacer channel (upper Sado estuary) and Ria Formosa.  相似文献

Ria Formosa lagoon in southern Portugal has an important population of seagrasses that includes Zostera noltii in the intertidal area. The area is classified as a Natural Park and supports a major economic activity – clam farming. This activity has a direct influence on Z. noltii populations by removal of seagrass beds and altering habitat. Geographic Information Systems and spatial analysis were used to produce the first distribution map of Z. noltii in the Ria Formosa and to analyse interactions between clam farming and the level of seagrass protection according to the Natural Park of Ria Formosa. Stakeholder analyses, using interviews, questionnaires and participant observation, were conducted to gain a better understanding of clam farming's influence on seagrass populations. Seagrass covers 45% of the intertidal area while clam farming covers 14%. An additional 75% of the total area of Z. noltii can be potentially converted into clam cultures. The current management of clam farming is largely ineffective, representing a significant obstacle to seagrass conservation.  相似文献

Coastal and estuarine intertidal sediments are commonly colonized by dense populations of microphytobenthos. Due to wind and tides, important fractions of microphytobenthic populations may be buried. A mathematical model describing the depth variation of chlorophyll a in intertidal sediments was developed and experimentally tested. The model assumed first-order chlorophylla degradation and a constant mean burial velocity which resulted in a negative exponential variationC Z =C O exp{-k/vz} (C Z andC O =chlorophylla concentration at depth zand at the surface;k=specific degradation rate of chlorophyll a to pheopigments;V=mean burial velocity). Chlorophylla concentration depth profiles in different sediment types measured at the Tagus estuary and Ria Formosa (Portugal) were used to validate the model. The model was adjusted to field data. The chlorophyll a degradation rate was measured in a microcosm experiment under total darkness and no tidal action, and sampled during three months. This rate was shown to be independent of time and depth for the upper 0–15 mm depth interval. This result allowed the estimation ofV for each sampling site. Comparison of predicted and observed temporal data further confirmed the validity of the model andk andV values. Despite its simplicity, the proposed model adequately described the depth distribution of chlorophylla in different types of intertidal sediments. The model allowed the quantitative characterization of the buried microphytobenthic biomass (depth-integrated biomass) and the assessment of its importance as potentially productive stock of cells.  相似文献

Intertidal sediments of Ria Formosa have been surveyed at different time scales. Pore water of short sediment cores was collected bimonthly at five stations, from May 1993 to June 1994, around low-tide. One location was studied intensively every 1.5 hour, during a 6-hour air-exposure period, and during 20 minutes (1, 5, 10 and 20 minutes) immediately after tidal water had inundated the sampling site. Determinations of vertical profiles of pH, Eh, water content, O2, total dissolved Mn (Mndiss), total dissolved Fe (Fediss) and inorganic sulphur [(HS)t] were carried out in all samples. The results obtained indicate that daily variations of Mndiss, Fediss and (HS)t concentrations appear to be superimposed to the seasonal ones. Probably, the renewal of the pore water at periods of tidal inundation causes advective transport of manganese and exchange of iron, between the pore water and the solid fraction of the sediment that masks seasonal fluctuations induced by temperature and organic matter input variations.  相似文献

The dwarf seagrass Zostera noltii is an important primary producer in Atlantic coastal ecosystems from Mauritania to southern Norway and the Mediterranean Sea. Sessile intertidal organisms existing at the interface between marine and terrestrial environments may be particularly vulnerable to environmental change. In this study, we asked how near to thermal tolerance limits natural populations of Z. noltii are in the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon system in southern Portugal. We recorded the maximum temperatures in the Ria Formosa during the 2007 summer, and conducted experiments to determine the sub-lethal temperature of Z. noltii shoots sampled at two sites located at different tidal heights. Mortality rates and photosynthetic performance were recorded within a range of heat shock temperatures between 35 and 41°C. Survival was recorded ≤37°C, while higher temperatures led to a sudden drop in photosynthetic capacity followed by mortality (shoot loss) that occurred more rapidly with increasing temperatures. At 39°C and above, the rate of shoot mortality in both sites was close to 100%, occurring between 5 and 13 days after the heat shock. Survival was ca. 95 and 90% at 35 and 37°C, respectively. From these results for Z. noltii populations in the Ria Formosa we estimated sub-lethal temperature to be approximately 38°C for Z. noltii, close to the maximum of 36°C recorded in the summer 2007. Considering predicted trajectories in the coming decades, these results raise concern as to the future viability of intertidal Z. noltii populations near the southernmost edge of their distribution. Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (T-RFLP) of PCR amplified 16S rRNA genes was used to investigate microbial communities in the sediments of Ria Formosa, Portugal. Five replicates of surface sand sediments were collected at an artificial inlet to the sea, between June 2001 and July 2002. Restriction enzymes Msp1 and Hha1 provided 57 different terminal fragments (T-RFs). The sediments were essentially dominated by the same ribotypes throughout the year, with seasonal shifts attributed to minor ribotypes. Principal component analysis of the T-RFs profile revealed no consistent pattern of temporal variation and no consistent grouping of replicate sediment samples. The results suggest that the small-scale spatial variability outweighs the seasonal variability. Phylogenetic affiliations suggested that the dominant bacteria were representatives of the α-Proteobacteria group.  相似文献

Ammonium concentrations were determined in near-bottom water and intertidal surface sediments collected in February and July 1993 at five stations of Ria Formosa, a shallow meso-tidal coastal lagoon in southern Portugal. At each station, samples were taken a few minutes before tidal inundation, and subsequently 2, 10, 15 and 20 minutes thereafter. Ammonium concentration in near-bottom waters increased dramatically in the first 2 minutes followed by a decrease during the 18 minutes of flooding (maximum range 10.3-2.2 M). The highest levels in the flooding water were concomitant with a decrease of extractable ammonium recorded in the upper sediment layer (2 cm). Laboratory experiments indicated that ammonium is easily extracted from the sediment solids by physical perturbation, as one would expect when tidal water flushes over the intertidal area. This perturbation results in the export of ammonium from the sediment, by pulse mechanisms of short time intervals. On a daily scale this amount is two orders of magnitude higher than transport resulting from molecular diffusion.  相似文献

Energy equivalence assumes equal contribution of large and small species to production and energy flow in communities. As in a double logarithmic plot, physiological rates decline with body weight by –0.25, log biomass should increase by 0.25 and log abundance decline by –0.75 with log species weight, when this concept is valid. This was tested with annual data sets of the macrobenthos of 4 intertidal sites in the German Wadden Sea (Königshafen) and 3 sites in a south Portuguese lagoon (Ria Formosa). Only abundance data from two of these sites displayed significantly negative slopes with mean body size of the species. Biomass and secondary production data were significantly positively correlated with mean body size for all Ria Formosa sites and also for the biomass of a mussel bed in Königshafen. However, high variation in body size of the individuals of a species limits interpretation of these plots.It is preferable to test this concept by body weight classes regardless of its species composition. At Königshafen, biomass and production displayed two distinct peaks. One peak at small body size was caused by browsing species. The other peak at larger body size was caused by animals which potentially extract their food from the water column. This bimodality was only vaguely reflected at one station in the Ria Formosa, possibly because of a dominance of detritus feeding species. In a normalized form (log biomass or production / width of size classvs. log size class), these spectra imply a dominance of small individuals in biomass and production at all sites (except for a mussel bank at Königshafen). This is interpreted as a consequence of permanent disturbances.  相似文献

In order to separate the effects of reaction from those of transport on vertical porewater concentration profiles of nitrate at an intertidal groundwater seepage site (Ria Formosa, Portugal), a free-boundary solution of an Advection?CDispersion-Reaction (ADR) model was used to describe the shape of NO3 ? concentration profiles collected in situ. The model includes three sequential reaction layers, postulated with basis on the local distribution of the benthic organic C:N ratio and major identifiable changes in concentration gradients with depth. The advective nature of the system was used to propose a mass balance simplification to the constitutive equations permitting a free-boundary solution, which in turn allowed prediction of sediment?Cwater fluxes of NO3 ?. Sensitivity analysis confirmed that in similarly advective-dominated environments, both the porewater concentration distribution and the interfacial fluxes are strongly dependant on seepage rate and benthic reactivity. The model fitted the measured profiles with high correlation (usually higher than 90%), and model-derived sediment?Cwater NO3 ? fluxes were in good agreement to fluxes measured in situ with Lee-type seepage meters (0.9948 slope, R2 = 0.8672, n = 8). Nitrate oxidation and reduction rates extracted from model fits to the data (10?2?C100 mmol m?2 h?1) agreed with literature values. Because dispersive effects are not included in direct mass balances based on the porewater concentrations, the model presented here increases the accuracy of apparent reaction rate estimates and geochemical zonation at Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD) sites. The results establish the importance of sandy sediments as reactive interfaces, able to modulate mass transfer of continental-derived contaminants into coastal ecosystems. We suggest that tools such as the one described here might be used to advantage in preparing further experimental studies to elucidate how benthic reactivity affects nitrate distribution and fluxes in sediments affected by SGD.  相似文献

Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD) has been frequently ignored as a nutrient source to marine ecosystems because it is difficult to identify and quantify. However, recent studies show its ubiquity and ecological importance to the coastal zone, particularly when associated with contaminated continental aquifers. The Ria Formosa is a coastal lagoon located in the south of Portugal and surrounded by an intensely farmed area. Following a 12-month field study using seepage meters, we identified groundwater discharge in the intertidal zone of the lagoon. The seeping fluid was a mixture of two water types: one with low salinity and high nitrate concentration and another similar to local seawater. Based on the integration of monthly seepage rate measurements throughout the year, we estimate the mean discharge of submarine groundwater into the lagoon to be 3.6 mday−1 per linear meter of coastline with freshwater contributions (per volume) ranging from 10% to 50%. The results of this study suggest a continental origin for the freshwater component, thus linking the biogeochemical cycles in the lagoon to anthropogenic activities taking place in the neighboring coastal plain. We further identify SGD as an important nutrient source to the Ria Formosa, estimating annual loads of 36.2 mol (0.507 kg) of Nitrogen, 1.1 mol (0.034 kg) of Phosphorus and 18.6 mol (0.522 kg) of Silicon per meter of coastline. Based on these results, we suggest that SGD is a potential contributor to the observed nutrification status of the Ria Formosa lagoon. The ecology and mating system of two populations of the peacock blenny Salaria pavo that have been reported to differ in sexual behaviour were studied. In the Gulf of Trieste, a northern Adriatic Sea population lives in rocky shores, whilst in the Ria Formosa, an Atlantic population inhabits a coastal lagoon with sandy barrier islands. In the Gulf of Trieste, nest availability was found to be higher and nest aggregation lower than in Ria Formosa. Nesting males courted females more and in higher proportion, and inversely, females directed less courtship displays towards nest holders in the Gulf of Trieste than in Ria Formosa. The relative frequency of small female-like males that reproduce by parasitically fertilizing eggs in the larger males’ nests was lower in the Gulf of Trieste population. This variation in the sexual behaviour of nesting males and females is likely to reflect a plastic behavioural response to the varying ecological conditions. The difference between populations in the relative frequency of parasitic males suggests that the male alternative reproductive tactics are condition-dependent.  相似文献

Levels of p,p-DDT and its metabolites in surficial sediments of Tagus and Sado Estuary and lagoon Ria Formosa varied one or two orders of magnitude. In general, p,-DDE and p,-DDD were the dominant metabolites and p,-DDT was a minor component. While concentrations of p,-DDT, p,-DDD and p,-DDE were hardly related to loss on ignition, concentrations of total DDT (tDDT) in surficial sediments of each studied system were positively correlated to that parameter. Higher contaminated samples were excluded from these relationships: a few sediment samples from the Tagus outlet channel, most of the sediments from the upper Sado Estuary, and some particulate matter samples collected in sediment traps in the adjoining area to the Ria Formosa. Concentration of tDDT appears, thus, to be related to sedimentary organic matter of these estuarine systems except near the actual sources of pollution. On the basis of the relationship slopes, one may conclude that lower Tagus Estuary is more contaminated than Ria Formosa and lower Sado Estuary.  相似文献

The morphological and physiological differences between two morphotypes of Z. noltii Hornem. were studied in the intertidal meadows on the south-western Iberian Peninsula (Palmones river estuary and Ria Formosa). A small-leaved morphotype (SM) grows mainly at high intertidal sites, meadow edges or in recently deposited sandbanks, whereas a large-leaved morphotype (LM) generally thrives in well-structured beds or in deeper places. This study deals with the morphological, biochemical and physiological differences between these morphotypes as well as the ecological implications of the occurrence of different morphotypes in the same meadow. Shoot length, leaf width, rhizome internode length, roots per node, root length, leaf nutrient and pigment contents, and photosynthetic rates of both morphotypes were compared. The below-ground architecture (root and rhizome complex) of both morphotypes was more developed in sites characterized by higher hydrodynamics and/or a lower nitrogen content in sediments. Both morphotypes showed similar values for photosynthetic efficiency, dark respiration rate and compensation irradiance. On the other hand, the net photosynthetic capacity was much greater (5-fold) for the SM. This difference could explain the greater growth rate and faster leaf turnover rate of the SM compared with the LM. The occurrence of the SM in newly settled areas (and in the meadow edges) could be explained on the basis of its higher growth rate, which would allow a faster spreading of the meadow and/or better recovery after burial resulting from stormy weathers. Ria Formosa is a large (c.a. 100 km2) mesotidal lagoon system with large intertidal areas and several conflicting uses, such as fisheries, aquaculture, tourism and nature conservation. Its watersheds cover an area of approximately 864 km2, with a perimeter of 166 km and a maximum altitude of 522 m. There are about 100 different land use classes being divided among six major groups: (1) urban, (2) agricultural, (3) forest, (4) rangeland and pastures, (5) wetlands and (6) water bodies. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT model) has been applied to the catchment areas in order to simulate water discharges to Ria Formosa, providing forcing to a two-dimensional vertically integrated coupled physical-biogeochemical model, implemented with EcoDynamo—an object oriented modelling software. This model includes water column and sediment processes as well as their interactions and several biological sub-models (e.g. phytoplankton dynamics and bivalve growth). The main objectives of this work are to: (i) Evaluate the relative importance of land drainage, waste water treatment (WTP) plants and water exchanges, across the lagoon inlets, for nutrient dynamics; (ii) Analyse management scenarios related to changes in lagoon bathymetry and their potential effects on system dynamics. Model’ results are being used by the Ria Formosa Natural Park authority for management purposes and may be useful to feedback future updates of the watershed management plans, within the scope of the European Union Water Framework Directive. Maximum nitrate reductase (NR) activity was measured in two intertidal morphotypes of Zostera noltii (Hornem.) in Ria Formosa tidal lagoon, southern Portugal. The two morphotypes develop in the upper and lower limits of the intertidal meadows. The NR activity was measured using an in vivo method, without cell disruption. NR activity was 30-40 fold higher in leaves than in roots, which indicates that nitrate reduction is essentially made through the aerial part of the plant. The effects of assay temperature (5 °C steps, from 5 to 45 °C), pH (7, 8 and 9) and elevation (upper and lower intertidal) on leaf NR activity were tested in a factorial design (n=5). Both elevation and assay temperature had a significant effect on NR activity, but not pH. NR activity was always higher in the upper intertidal plants, at all temperatures. Activity peaks for upper and lower plants were, respectively, 6.12 μmol NO2 g−1 DW 0.5 h−1 at 25 °C, and 3.30 μmol NO2 g−1 DW 0.5h−1 at 35 °C. Further investigation on environmental factors concerning the intertidal environment must be developed, as they are probably responsible for the significant differences found between the values of NR activity in the upper and lower morphotype.  相似文献

The Ria Formosa is a meso-tidal coastal lagoon experiencing enhanced nutrient concentrations. Assessment of sediment–seawater interaction is essential if nutrient dynamics and the risk of eutrophication are to be fully understood. Pore water concentrations of dissolved inorganic and organic phosphorus, ammonium, nitrate and nitrite were determined in cores from six sites. Changes in nutrients concentrations were measured in intertidal pools on sand and mud between tides. Dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentrations (~200 μmol l−1) and effluxes (123 ± 14 μmol m−2 h−1) were greater from sand than mud (37 ± 10 μmol m−2 h−1), possibly due to the binding of P with the <63 μm fraction. NH4+ effluxes were high outside the Anc?o Basin (821 ± 106 μmol m−2 h−1) and were associated with Enteromorpha sp. mats. The greatest NO3 efflux was from sediments near a salt marsh (170 ± 67 μmol m−2 h−1). These sediment fluxes of P were not sufficient to account for elevated P concentrations seen by other workers on the ebb tide from the Anc?o Basin. Intertidal pools were sinks for Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) and DIP over the 6 h exposure period. Thus, tidepools may be an important route of nutrients into sediments that enhances the effects of sediments on seawater nutrient concentrations.  相似文献

Aromatase, the key enzyme in the conversion of androgens to estrogens, regulates the availability of these hormones in tissues and controls many physiological and behavioral processes. In fish and other vertebrates, the regulation of aromatase expression in the brain has been implicated in the modulation of male sexual and aggressive behaviors. Here, the pattern of mRNA expression of the brain aromatase isoform (encoded by the CYP19A2 gene also referred as CYP19b) was quantified at the peak of spawning season in brain macroareas from males and females of the blenny Salaria pavo originated from two populations displaying male alternative reproductive tactics but differing in their mating systems. In Trieste (Adriatic) nesting males aggressively defend nests and take the initiative in courtship and perform sexual displays more often than females while in Ria Formosa (Southern Portugal) the pattern is reversed as a result of shortage of appropriate nesting sites. Nesting males from Ria Formosa had overall higher levels of brain aromatase mRNA expression than nesting males from Trieste, suggesting a higher brain estrogen synthesis in these males. Since in some fish species exogenous estradiol administration has been shown to decrease sexual and agonistic behaviors, the higher levels of brain aromatase in Ria Formosa nesting males may explain their reduced expression of sexual and aggressive displays when compared with nesting males from Trieste. Alternatively, the higher brain aromatase levels in nesting males from Ria Formosa could be a mechanism to decrease the putative androgen-induced activation of aggressive and sexual displays by reducing the local availability of androgens through their metabolization into estrogens. Although females and parasitic female-like males also differ in their displays between populations, the interpopulational pattern of brain aromatase mRNA expression was similar, suggesting that other neuroendocrine agents mediate the expression of female and female-like behaviors. In conclusion, brain aromatase availability seems like a probable mechanism to regulate the effects of steroids on the brain circuits underlying the expression of sexual and agonistic displays in S. pavo.  相似文献

Recruitment of seaweeds through small reproductive stages is limited on sediment inundated rocky shores and largely unsuccessful in soft sediment environments. Burial in sediment has several potentially negative effects for seaweed propagules, and these effects were differentiated in a laboratory experiment. We investigated how light deprivation, sediment type (grain size, organic content, and origin), and sediment chemistry (oxygen presence and toxicity through hydrogen sulfide) affected survivorship and growth of Fucus serratus L. embryos. Presence of hydrogen sulfide had overriding negative impacts on both survivorship and growth of Fucus embryos, independently of sediment type and light availability. In contrast, simple anaerobiosis generally did not impair survival or growth of the embryos. Fine sediments, 3 mm thick, significantly reduced embryo survivorship, presumably through accumulation of metabolic waste products in the immediate vicinity of the embryos as a consequence of constrained diffusion. This effect was equally pronounced in the presence of a 1‐mm layer of organically rich biodeposits. Irradiance levels did not affect survival of embryos but influenced growth. Decreasing thickness and increasing coarseness of sediments together represented a gradient of enhanced light penetration and diffusion. Growth of embryos increased along this gradient. In nature, soft sediment environments with organically enriched muds (e.g. tidal flats and salt marshes) represent habitats least favorable for colonization through small reproductive stages of seaweeds.  相似文献
