Historically, shooting has been a popular method for controlling foxes in Australia, but past research has shown it to be an ineffective method for significantly reducing fox population numbers. These past studies investigated shooting when conducted in isolated, one‐off programmes. In more recent years large, coordinated group fox management programmes has become popular in both agricultural and conservation areas. These landscape scale programmes give more chance of long‐term respite from predation damage by slowing down the immigration rates of foxes into the culled area. Studies have been conducted investigating the effectiveness of large‐scale group fox management programmes that primarily used 1080 baiting as the method of control to protect vulnerable livestock and small animal. This study investigated the potential of a large‐scale group programme that used shooting as the main form of control to reduce the impact of fox predation.  相似文献

Biological control offers a cost effective and ecologically sustainable tool for the management of invasive alien plants. Its implementation, however, has historically been slow and poorly co-ordinated. In South Africa, as in many other countries, most aspects of biological control programmes were done by researchers, but from 1995 onwards, with the advent of the Working for Water Programme, a more inclusive approach to biological control has been adopted. In this paper, we report on the development of community-based biological control implementation programmes in South Africa, after 1995, and highlight a number of initiatives, including employing persons with disabilities at mass-rearing facilities and in particular, we outline a suite of educational and outreach programmes for the general public and for schools, which have increased capacity, education and employment in the field of weed biological control.  相似文献

Antimicrobial misuse results in the development of resistance and superbugs. Over recent decades, resistance has been increasing despite continuing efforts to control it, resulting in increased mortality and cost. Many authorities have proposed local, regional and national guidelines to fight against this phenomenon, and the usefulness of these programmes has been evaluated. Multifaceted intervention seems to be the most efficient method to control antimicrobial resistance. Monitoring of bacterial resistance and antibiotic use is essential, and the methodology has now been homogenized. The implementation of guidelines and infection control measures does not control antimicrobial resistance and needs to be reinforced by associated measures. Educational programmes and rotation policies have not been evaluated sufficiently in the literature. Combination antimicrobial therapy is inefficient in controlling antimicrobial resistance.  相似文献

Biological control of insect pest and weeds using beneficial insects in resource poor areas is not very well supported. Poor funding has affected in particular the importation of classical biological control agents, quarantine, rearing, research facilities, and the research programmes. Donor agencies, commercial and semi-commercial enterprises in a number of African countries have, however, been able to contribute to biological control efforts using beneficial insects by providing some of the resources needed. This has led to biological control becoming a real possibility to control insect pests and weeds in several resource poor countries. Examples are provided of the “spin-offs” of such programmes for resource poor areas in South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Malawi, Benin and Nigeria. Conventional insect rearing, insect conservation and habitat management as an aid to biological control programmes are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  New World screwworm populations in North and Central America have been the targets of virtually continuous eradication attempts by sterile insect technique (SIT) since the 1950s. Nevertheless, in some areas, such as Jamaica, SIT control programmes have failed. Reasons for the failure of SIT-based control programmes in some locations are unknown, but it has been hypothesized that failure may be related to mating incompatibility between sterile and wild fly populations or to the existence of sexually incompatible cryptic species. This paper outlines the development of a suite of four new microsatellite loci which can be used to study intra-specific relationships between populations of Cochliomyia hominivorax from the Caribbean and South America, which represent those populations involved in, or earmarked for, forthcoming SIT control. Cross-amplification with the secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria , was also successful with three of the new loci. We present results which suggest that populations from Trinidad and Jamaica form distinct groupings of flies and that C. hominivorax from Trinidad appears particularly distinct.  相似文献

As a result of support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, schistosomiasis and intestinal or soil-transmitted helminth infections have been the subject of national control programmes in three Eastern and Southern African countries: Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia. Here, we review the significant progress made in their control efforts and highlight the different approaches being adopted to ensure programme effectiveness and sustainability. Although a positive start has been made to reduce morbidity resulting from schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections in these countries, it is imperative that support is identified to sustain the programmes until these infections are no longer a public health problem and children can therefore be given a healthy start to life.  相似文献

This review summarizes the progress towards control of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and onchocerciasis, focussing on the impact of mass drug administration (MDA) programmes, in particular those that have developed following the donation of ivermectin and albendazole. The contrasting strategies and objectives of the different programmes are compared, and the impact on transmission, clinical disease and public health assessed. The constraints on programme success are: (i) the absence of a macrofilaricide, which can be used in a public health context; (ii) the sustainability of high coverage of ivermectin over many years in onchocerciasis control; and (iii) the problem of treatment in areas where Loa loa (tropical eye worm) is co-endemic with onchocerciasis because of the rare severe adverse events. LF programmes are expanding rapidly in over 30 countries, where circa 60 million people received treatments in 2002. No serious adverse events have been associated with MDAs for LF elimination. Research on new approaches to treatment using antibiotics are showing promising results in pilot settings because doxycyline has been shown to have long-term embryostatic effects and sustained reductions of microfilaria loads in onchocerciasis and bancroftian filariasis.  相似文献

Insular ecosystems all over the world have been negatively affected by the introduction of ungulates, and it is due to the dramatic impacts that extensive control/eradication programmes have been undertaken. Eradication programmes using sophisticated techniques were recently carried out on Mexican islands. However, the phase of absence confirmation is facing the challenges seen elsewhere: how much effort is needed to confirm success? We present the case of Guadalupe Island in the Mexican Pacific. Eradication of feral goats (Capra hircus) was conducted on this volcanic island of 250 km2 from 2002-2006. Since 2007 we have focussed on confirming absence through use of Judas goats. We discuss our results to date and how future assessments can be improved.  相似文献

Today, chemotherapy has a central role in the control of schistosome infections. Although the costs involved may be high in relation to local expenditures on health, externally funded mass treatment programmes can lead to large reductions in the prevalence and intensity of schistosome infections. But the benefits of treatment to a community that has been involved in a mass chemotherapy programme, or to an individual patient seen in a health centre, will be limited if reinfection after treatment is rapid and intense. Despite the efficacy of the available drugs few, if any, control programmes based on mass chemotherapy have interrupted transmission and come anywhere near to eradicating schistosome infection.  相似文献

In many New Zealand threatened species (birds, lizards, frogs, invertebrates) recovery programmes dogs are a significant conservation management tool. Protected species detection dogs have regularly been used to locate rare birds since the 1970’s and more recently lizards. They have been used to detect, but not capture, kakapo, takahe, kiwi, whio, pateke, taiko, skinks and geckos, for monitoring and translocation purposes. Kakapo would possibly be extinct today if dogs had not been used to locate birds on Stewart Island and Fiordland for translocation to predator-free islands before predators and old age eliminated these original remnant populations. Use of these dogs on the kiwi recovery projects has advanced the progress of these projects by about ten years. Predator detection dogs support threatened species recovery programmes and their role is to enhance other predator control methods. They have been regularly used since 2002 following a successful three-year pilot project to prove their usefulness. These dogs are used to detect the presence of mammalian predators including rodents, mustelids, cat and hedgehog. They are particularly useful when predator numbers are low when other predator detection methods (tracking tunnels, traps, gnaw sticks) have difficulty confirming their presence. Once detected by the dogs the predators are killed using toxins, traps or shooting. Dogs are used for: surveillance of supposedly predator-free sites; as a tool to focus predator a process of handler application and interview, and a two-step assessment and certification system for dogs and handlers guide these Department of Conservation dog programmes. There are currently 11 predator dog handlers and 26 protected species dog handlers in the programmes.  相似文献

In recent decades we have been given insight into the process that transforms a normal cell into a malignant cancer cell. It has been recognised that malignant transformation occurs through successive mutations in specific cellular genes, leading to the activation of oncogenes and inactivation of tumor suppressor genes. The further study of these genes has generated much of its excitement from the convergence of experiments addressing the genetic basis of cancer, together with cellular pathways that normally control important cellular regulatory programmes. In the present review the context in which oncogenes such as proliferation, cell death/apoptosis, differentiation and senescence will be described, as well as how these cellular programmes become deregulated in cancer due to mutations.  相似文献

The development of ex situ conservation work for Orthoptera is demonstrated by examples of two captive-breeding programmes at the Zoological Society of London. The field cricket Gryllus campestris and wart-biter bush cricket Decticus verrucivorus are both species that have been bred in captivity and reintroduced to field sites in attempts to strengthen dwindling wild populations. Despite a similar approach to both programmes, we have encountered significant differences in the practical applications of the captive management process for the two species. By reviewing these breeding programmes, we examine some of the practical considerations associated with ex situ orthopteran programmes and compare some of the different elements that can influence programme success.  相似文献

Genetic dissection of phenotypic diversity in farm animals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Farm animal populations harbour rich collections of mutations with phenotypic effects that have been purposefully enriched by breeding. Most of these mutations do not have pathological phenotypic consequences, in contrast to the collections of deleterious mutations in model organisms or those causing inherited disorders in humans. Farm animals are of particular interest for identifying genes that control growth, energy metabolism, development, appetite, reproduction and behaviour, as well as other traits that have been manipulated by breeding. Genome research in farm animals will add to our basic understanding of the genetic control of these traits and the results will be applied in breeding programmes to reduce the incidence of disease and to improve product quality and production efficiency.  相似文献

Invasive alien weeds pose a serious threat to the biodiversity of natural ecosystems and a significant constraint to agricultural production worldwide. The use of co-evolved natural enemies, a strategy referred to as classical biological control (CBC), has proven to be a potentially efficacious, cost-effective, and safe option for the management of alien weeds. An analysis of CBC of invasive weeds in Latin America is presented, which shows that only 5% of the worldwide releases of agents, overwhelmingly arthropod, have been in this region. Fungal pathogens are increasingly being considered in CBC programmes, and there are now 11 examples of Latin American fungi having been released as biocontrol agents in other regions of the world. In contrast, only three weed pathogens have been deliberately released in the region. Possible reasons for the paucity of CBC programmes in Latin America are presented, despite the presence of a significant number of alien weed species (60 are listed). An analysis of these weeds reveals that many of them could be amenable to control using natural enemies, including nine weed species for which CBC programmes have been successfully implemented elsewhere in the world. In addition, for many of these 60 species, a co-evolved and damaging mycobiota has already been recorded. The prospects for management of invasive alien weeds in Latin America, using co-evolved fungal pathogens, are assessed with particular reference to selected species from the genera Ambrosia, Broussonetia, Calotropis, Commelina, Cyperus, Dichrostachys, Echinochloa, Pittosporum, Rottboellia, Rubus, Sonchus and Ulex. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The past 20 years have seen the development of bait technologies that enable livestock keepers to control tsetse flies and, hence, African trypanosomiasis. The techniques have, however, often been applied on too small a scale, without due regard to the realities of tsetse population dynamics. The consequent lack of progress has led to calls for a return to large-scale operations. Analysis of successful programmes to control or eliminate tsetse in southern Africa suggests that the combined use of recently improved bait methods and insecticide spraying will provide the building blocks for achieving the wider objective of the African Union, which is to create large tsetse-free zones.  相似文献

Despite the World Health Organisation''s spoken commitment to developing integrated primary health care, its most visible and successful activities are not integrated within countries; they are its disease specific intervention programmes, such as the Global Programme on AIDS and the programmes for the control of diarrhoeal and acute respiratory diseases. The 10 or so special programmes, all but one of which (the onchocerciasis control programme) are based in Geneva, have found increasing favour among donors, but critics say that they undermine WHO''s attempts to integrate its activities at country level and discourage countries from developing their own capacity.  相似文献

Regularization programmes for undocumented migrants are generally viewed as a form of transition from “illegality” to a secure legal status. Yet, as we argue in this article, in many countries, such as Mexico, this transition is often incomplete and reversible. This article discusses regularization programmes for undocumented migrants in Mexico before and after the introduction of the 2011 Migration Law and illustrates that the status migrants obtain is precarious, that is insecure and conditional upon their ability to meet requirements for status renewal. Focusing on Central Americans in Mexico, we suggest that many migrants have been unable to obtain or renew their status after new procedures were put in place in 2011. Coining the legality granted through Mexico’s regularization process “precarious legality”, we attribute it to the contradiction between Mexico’s stated respect for migrants’ human rights and the de facto commitment to immigration control.  相似文献

Although the vast majority of orthopterans are not pests, some species have the potential to cause serious damage to human interests. Management of pest populations frequently conflicts with conservation of orthopteran species and processes, particularly when the pest species or its ecological processes are susceptible to extinction or when the pest population is coincident with non-target orthopterans. With respect to chemical control, the greatest hazards are the broad-spectrum, highly lethal properties of most agents, which can be mitigated with formulation and application methods. Biological control risks permanent, large-scale changes to orthopteran species and processes which can be minimized with bioinsecticidal and other short-lived or selective formulations and reliable host-range testing. Cultural control may have large-scale, broad-spectrum impacts to non-target orthopterans, but these hazards can be diminished by appropriate testing and monitoring. Mechanical control methods may be impractically labour intensive, but they are highly target specific and therefore warrant further consideration. Social control measures such as education, insurance and compensation programmes appear to have little direct potential for harm to orthopteran conservation, but the complex socioeconomic and, ultimately, environmental consequences of such programmes have not been assessed. The melding of orthopteran pest management and conservation requires that we perceive these insects and their ecological processes to be vital elements of sustainable agroecosystems. Our management of orthopterans (both non-target and pest populations) must focus on keeping good stewards on the land.  相似文献

Biological control, using specialist insect herbivores and plant pathogens, can be a self‐sustaining, cost‐effective and low‐risk tool for the management of environmental weeds. Agents have been recorded attacking non‐target plants in New Zealand and elsewhere, but the effects are usually minor and/or transitory. It seems probable that only two cases, worldwide, will result in significant damage to non‐target plants (representing 0.5% of the nearly 400 insect, mite, or fungal species used in classical weed biocontrol). Both of these cases were predictable from host range testing. Negative indirect, or ‘downstream’, ecological effects from specific weed biocontrol agents are difficult to predict and measure. They are probably insignificant compared to the impacts of the invasive plants that the agents are introduced to control. However, it is necessary to balance the risks associated with any introduction against the environmental benefits from controlling a weed to a predicted level. Recent analyses suggest that success rates are better than generally perceived. For New Zealand programmes, where enough time has lapsed to allow assessment, we calculate a full/partial success rate of 83%. Many of the costs associated with environmental weeds are difficult to quantify. Detailed risk assessment will make biological control programmes more expensive and time‐consuming, so that reliance on non‐biological management methods for environmental weeds may actually increase. The costs of biocontrol programmes against some New Zealand weeds can be kept down by using research already carried out in Australia and other countries, and the process is reciprocal. Developing international consortia of sponsors is also a potential way to fund programmes against weeds shared by several countries.  相似文献
