It was discussed the role of biodiversity in ecosystems capacity to control CO2 in atmosphere as the main reason not only of "greenhouse effect" but "greenhouse catastrophe". The necessity to perfect the preventive measures has been defined by time factor. This time may be so little for completing the evolution theory and models of biosphere management. The temps of contemporaneous species extinction exceed two orders as minimum ones how it has been known from planet history. It doesn't permit to discharge that evolutional process will be successful to create organisms which have been capable to stabilize biosphere in conditions of its changing status. It's possible that such change may be provocated with the crisis in civilization-biosphere interrelations.  相似文献

Humoral immunity, as a cause of damage to blood vessels, poses a major barrier to successful transplantation of organs. Under some conditions, humoral immunity causes little or no damage to an organ graft. We have referred to this condition, in which a vascularized graft functions in the face of humoral immunity directed against it, as "accommodation." In this paper, we review changes in the graft and in the host that may account for accommodation, and we consider that what we call accommodation of organ grafts may occur widely in the context of immune responses, enabling immune responses to target infectious organisms without harming self-tissues.  相似文献

TI I27, a beta-sandwich domain from the human muscle protein titin, has been shown to fold via two alternative pathways, which correspond to a change in the folding mechanism. Under physiological conditions, TI I27 folds by a classical nucleation-condensation mechanism (diffuse transition state), whereas at extreme conditions of temperature and denaturant it switches to having a polarized transition state. We have used experimental Phi-values as restraints in ensemble-averaged molecular dynamics simulations to determine the ensembles of structures representing the two transition states. The comparison of these ensembles indicates that when native interactions are substantially weakened, a protein may still be able to fold if it can access an alternative transition state characterized by a much larger entropic contribution. Analysis of the probability distribution of Phi-values derived from ensemble averaged simulations, enables us to identify residues that form contacts in some members of the ensemble but not in others illustrating that many interactions present in transition states are not strictly required for the successful completion of the folding process.  相似文献

Native plant species are routinely planted or sown in ecological restoration projects, but successful establishment and survival depend on where and how seeds are collected. Research suggests that it is important to use locally adapted seeds. Local populations often show a home-site advantage and non-local genotypes may be maladapted to local environmental conditions. Furthermore, intraspecific hybridisation of local and non-local genotypes may have a negative impact on the genetic structure of local populations via mechanisms such as outbreeding depression. Many species show a strong small-scale genetic differentiation between different habitats so that matching habitats of the restoration and donor site can be more important than minimizing geographical separation. It is a challenge to identify appropriate seed sources because strong small-scale population differentiation makes it difficult to delineate geographically defined seed zones to which seed exchange should be limited. Moreover, it is important to consider the genetic diversity of introduced material because it may be crucial to avoid genetic bottlenecks, inbreeding depression and poor establishment of plant populations. Repeated propagation in stock, which is often required to obtain a sufficient amount of seeds, can further reduce genetic diversity and may select for particular genotypes. Negative impacts of improper seed choice for nursery planting stock may become detectable only after many years, especially in long-lived and slow growing plants. Although scientific information on many species remains limited, the increasing demand for translocation of seed means that mandatory regulations are necessary. Guidelines should prescribe a specification of seed provenance, a record of genetic diversity of wild collections and rules for subsequent processing such as direct transfer and propagation of stock or seed orchards. We use a literature review to evaluate current legislation and to develop recommendations for herbaceous and woody species.  相似文献

A population-genetic analysis is performed of a two-locus two-allele model, in which the primary locus has a major effect on a quantitative trait that is under frequency-dependent disruptive selection caused by intraspecific competition for a continuum of resources. The modifier locus determines the degree of dominance at the trait level. We establish the conditions when a modifier allele can invade and when it becomes fixed if sufficiently frequent. In general, these are not equivalent because an unstable internal equilibrium may exist and the condition for successful invasion of the modifier is more restrictive than that for eventual fixation from already high frequency. However, successful invasion implies global fixation, i.e., fixation from any initial condition. Modifiers of large effect can become fixed, and also invade, in a wider parameter range than modifiers of small effect. We also study modifiers with a direct, frequency-independent deleterious fitness effect. We show that they can invade if they induce a sufficiently high level of dominance and if disruptive selection on the ecological trait is strong enough. For deleterious modifiers, successful invasion no longer implies global fixation because they can become stuck at an intermediate frequency due to a stable internal equilibrium. Although the conditions for invasion and for fixation if sufficiently frequent are independent of the linkage relation between the two loci, the rate of spread depends strongly on it. The present study provides further support to the view that evolution of dominance may be an efficient mechanism to remove unfit heterozygotes that are maintained by balancing selection. It also demonstrates that an invasion analysis of mutants of very small effect is insufficient to obtain a full understanding of the evolutionary dynamics under frequency-dependent selection.  相似文献

The intertidal teleosts Gobius paganellus and Lipophrys pholis show endogenous circatidal activity rhythms when recorded in constant conditions. Under these conditions, the rhythm of L. pholis is the more precise which may indicate stronger coupling between underlying circalunadian oscillators in this species. In G. pagunellus the inter-oscillator coupling may be weaker and this could enable a more subtle interpretation of tidal fluctuations than in L. pholis . The oscillators may, however, be fundamentally different in the two species; circalunadian in G. paganellus and circatidal in L. pholis .
When exposed to hydrostatic pressure cycles of tidal frequency both species responded pre- dominantly to increasing pressure, which suggests that in the wild they are likely to be most active on the rising tide. Hydrostatic pressure cycles are confirmed as a zeitgeber for both species by the successful entrainment of some individuals. The lack of entrainment of others impIies that additional zeitgebers are required for complete entrainment.  相似文献

Conformity is an important aspect of many communication systems in which signals are culturally transmitted. We suggest that one reason for it to evolve is if nonconforming individuals are discriminated against, and we therefore investigated how this might arise. We designed a spatial simulation, in which individuals occupied a territory on a lattice, and played a territorial game with their neighbours in which one individual could challenge another and, if successful, obtain some of the latter's resources. We then examined the relative success of pairs of strategies. We found that aggression targeted towards nonconformers (conformity-enforcing behaviour) was more successful than randomly targeted aggression in both a simple model and a more complicated one in which the conditions were based on the specific case of song sharing between songbirds. The reason for this result is that individuals could use patterns of vocal sharing to gang up on neighbours with locally uncommon song types, increasing their own chances of success. In both models, a critical parameter was how the number of contests an individual was previously involved in altered the chance of winning: conformity-enforcing behaviour was the most successful strategy only if the more contests an individual had been involved in, the less likely it was to win. Our results may explain the origin of conformity-enforcing behaviour and discrimination in nonhuman animals and may have relevance to similar behaviour in humans.  相似文献

Species across the planet are shifting their ranges to track suitable climate conditions in response to climate change. Given that protected areas have higher quality habitat and often harbor higher levels of biodiversity compared to unprotected lands, it is often assumed that protected areas can serve as steppingstones for species undergoing climate-induced range shifts. However, there are several factors that may impede successful range shifts among protected areas, including the distance that must be traveled, unfavorable human land uses and climate conditions along potential movement routes, and lack of analogous climates. Through a species-agnostic lens, we evaluate these factors across the global terrestrial protected area network as measures of climate connectivity, which is defined as the ability of a landscape to facilitate or impede climate-induced movement. We found that over half of protected land area and two-thirds of the number of protected units across the globe are at risk of climate connectivity failure, casting doubt on whether many species can successfully undergo climate-induced range shifts among protected areas. Consequently, protected areas are unlikely to serve as steppingstones for a large number of species under a warming climate. As species disappear from protected areas without commensurate immigration of species suited to the emerging climate (due to climate connectivity failure), many protected areas may be left with a depauperate suite of species under climate change. Our findings are highly relevant given recent pledges to conserve 30% of the planet by 2030 (30 × 30), underscore the need for innovative land management strategies that allow for species range shifts, and suggest that assisted colonization may be necessary to promote species that are adapted to the emerging climate.  相似文献

Range displacements by pleistocene ungulates, strongly linked to climatic variations, are apparent based on regional-scale examination of faunal assem-blages; either species appearances or disappearances, or variability in relative species frequencies is evidence for such displacement. Appearances and disappearances of species most often occur with major climatic changes, while frequency variations characterize environmental changes of lesser magnitude.Whenever it is possible to examine processes offaunal change in detail, it becomes evident that they were typically progressive even though they may appear abrupt on a geologic scale. In particular, the disappearance of a species occurs only after populations attempt to adapt to new environmental conditions on a regional level. Adaptative responses may not be successful when climatic shifts are great, involving significant alteration of the extant biosphere, but they may be successful when climatic variability is less radical or when change occurs slowly enough to allow animal populations to develop adequate new adaptative strategies. An example of successful adaptation is provided by the wurmian reindeer. The most humid periods during the early recent Wurm stadial, along with the very dry “inter Laugerie-Lascaux” phase, produced a temporary decrease in relative reindeer frequencies in Aquitaine faunal assemblages. The sharp cold of the Pleniglacial (22000–13500 BP), in contrast, led to a reduction in mean stature of reindeers.  相似文献

In the extent to which it is used, the concept of the potential natural vegetation (PNV) is one of the most successful novelties in vegetation science over the last decades. However, previous applications of the concept have shown that the theoretical principles were used inconsistently or interpreted in an incorrect sense. The present problems in application (which become evident when visualizing historical aspects of the concept) mainly result from (a) inconsistent treatment of the construction criteria; (b) failure to distinguish between the “potential natural vegetation”, the “reconstructed natural vegetation” and the vegetation developing during succession, (c) the lack of a precise definition for reference terms to construct potential natural vegetation (e.g. treating reversible vs. irreversible changes of vegetation). For a sensible application of the concept it is suggested (a) to construct the potential natural vegetation on the basis of natural site conditions as well as permanently effective site changes as a consequence of human impact, (b) to consider the PNV to be in balance with all site conditions taken as basis for its construction. In practice, however, the construction basis may also derive from a particular question underlying the making of a PNV-map. A suggestion for a re-definition of the term “potential natural vegetation” as well as a key for PNV-mapping (valid for landscapes of Northern Germany) are given.  相似文献

While mangrove restoration efforts are reasonably successful, failure often occurs in high wave energy situations. Due to differences in wave energy, seedling mortality rates vary strongly with position on the intertidal flat between high water spring and high water neap elevations. However, a local positive feedback can be present between the pneumatophores of adult mangroves and the survival of mangrove seedlings to trigger recovery. In this study, a mangrove population of Avicennia marina is modelled to determine the effects of seedling mortality and local positive feedback on mangrove recovery. The model uses life history data and dispersal to simulate population dynamics. The mangrove range limits are determined by high water spring and high water neap levels. The results indicate that within these limits mangrove populations with life-history parameter values as derived from literature are indeed capable of fast growth under conditions with low seedling mortality. Local positive feedback has then a small positive influence on population recovery after mangrove loss. If, however, mortality rates increase, such as in high wave energy situations, the importance of a positive feedback increases. The model shows that a positive feedback may, given high seedling mortality rates, be an important factor for mangrove recovery. While a positive feedback may enable mangrove persistence in unfavourable conditions, destruction of adult mangroves can remove the positive feedback, which would render the system uninhabitable and practically prohibits reforestation of such areas. The model results and the presence of positive feedbacks and their importance for population dynamics in harsh conditions indicate that investigating and understanding possible feedbacks could be crucial for successful restoration efforts.  相似文献

1. The ideal conditions for a parasite are typically found with its preferred host. However, prior to transmission to a naïve host and successful infection, a parasite may have to withstand extrinsic environmental conditions. Some parasites have adapted to time away from hosts, for example, by co-opting vectors or by having drought-resistant growth stages. However, other parasites may have no obvious adaptations to persist during prolonged transmission cycles. Consequently, the environment may detrimentally impact parasite fitness and ultimately epidemiology. 2. Here, we investigate the impact of nectar-realistic sugar concentrations on the ability of the trypanosome parasite Crithidia bombi, which may be transmitted between conspecifics at flowers, to infect its bumblebee host Bombus terrestris and to reproduce during the infection (parasitaemia). Our results show, following 30 min exposure to our experimental nectars that as sugar concentration increases, infection prevalence and parasitaemia decrease. This is likely due to the increased osmotic stress C. bombi experiences in high sugar, aqueous environments. 3. Consequently, if C. bombi transmission is facilitated by nectar or a high-sugar environment, it may have a negative impact on parasite fitness.  相似文献

Cryopreservation of mouse sperm provides an economic option for preserving the large number of mouse strains now being generated by transgenic and targeted mutation methodologies. The ability of a spermatozoan cell to survive cryobiological preservation depends on general biophysical constraints that apply to all cells, such as the avoidance or minimization of the formation of intracellular ice during cooling. This action is typically achieved by use of cryoprotectant substances and by controlled, slow rates of cooling. Superimposed on those general constraints may be special characteristics of mouse spermatozoa, such as more narrow, osmotically driven volume tolerance limits and the fact that relatively successful freezing can be obtained without the use of a permeating cryoprotective agent. The lack of important information regarding sperm cells fundamental cryobiological properties, including their osmotic and membrane permeability characteristics, has hindered progress in developing anything but empirically derived methods. Genetic differences between inbred mouse strains are reflected in motility and fertility characteristics of mouse sperm and contribute to the difficulty of developing successful cryopreservation methods. Recovery of live young from frozen sperm has been much more successful with sperm from hybrid mice than from most inbred strains. There have been no published reports of successful cryopreservation of rat sperm. Nevertheless, in mice, success in deriving live young from intracytoplasmic sperm injection using sperm frozen under suboptimal conditions raises the possibility of using this technique for the ultimate rescue of sperm regardless of the success of cryopreservation. This technique, however, requires additional development and verification of its efficacy before it will be suitable for general laboratory use. Although cryopreservation of mouse sperm is not yet universally successful, it can be used reliably to supplement cryopreservation of embryos and other germline cells or tissues for preserving biomedically important strains of mice for research.  相似文献

Based on the experiences of two psychiatrists sharing a consultant post this article describes some of the problems in obtaining a job share. The most difficult part can be getting an interview, and once a post has been obtained the terms and conditions of service may have to be modified to suit job sharing. Stimulation of cell behavioral functions by ligand/receptor binding can be accomplished in autocrine fashion, where cells secrete ligand capable of binding to receptors on their own surfaces. This proximal secretion of autocrine ligands near the surface receptors on the secreting cell suggests that control of these systems by inhibitors of receptor/ligand binding may be more difficult than for systems involving exogenous ligands. Hence, it is of interest to predict the conditions under which successful inhibition of cell receptor binding by the autocrine ligand can be expected. Previous theoretical work using a compartmentalized model for autocrine cells has elucidated the conditions under which addition of solution decoys for the autocrine ligand can interrupt cell receptor/ligand binding via competitive binding of the secreted molecules (Forsten, K. E., and D. A. Lauffenburger. 1992. Biophys. J. 61:1-12.) We now apply a similar modeling approach to examine the addition of solution blockers targeted against the cell receptor. Comparison of the two alternative inhibition strategies reveals that a significantly lower concentration of receptor blockers, compared to ligand decoys, will obtain a high degree of inhibition. The more direct interruption scheme characteristic of the receptor blockers may make them a preferred strategy when feasible.  相似文献

Aims Successful invasive plants are often assumed to display significant levels of phenotypic plasticity. Three possible strategies by which phenotypic plasticity may allow invasive plant species to thrive in changing environments have been suggested: (i) via plasticity in morphological or physiological traits, invasive plants are able to maintain a higher fitness than native plants in a range of environments, including stressful or low-resource habitats: a 'Jack-of-all-trades' strategy; (ii) phenotypic plasticity allows the invader to better exploit resources available in low stress or favorable habitats, showing higher fitness than native ones: a 'Master-of-some' strategy and (iii) a combination of these abilities, the 'Jack-and-Master' strategy.Methods We evaluated these strategies in the successful invader Taraxacum officinale in a controlled experiment mimicking natural environmental gradients. We set up three environmental gradients consisting of factorial arrays of two levels of temperature/light, temperature/water and light/water, respectively. We compared several ecophysiological traits, as well as the reaction norm in fitness-related traits, in both T. officinale and the closely related native Hypochaeris thrincioides subjected to these environmental scenarios.Important findings Overall, T. officinale showed significantly greater accumulation of biomass and higher survival than the native H. thrincioides, with this difference being more pronounced toward both ends of each gradient. T. officinale also showed significantly higher plasticity than its native counterpart in several ecophysiological traits. Therefore, T. officinale exhibits a Jack-and-Master strategy as it is able to maintain higher biomass and survival in unfavorable conditions, as well as to increase fitness when conditions are favorable. We suggest that this strategy is partly based on ecophysiological responses to the environment, and that it may contribute to explaining the successful invasion of T. officinale across different habitats.  相似文献

THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF SHORT- AND LONG-RANGE MOVEMENT OF FLYING APHIDS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. Aphids are notorious pests of world agriculture. Even so, uncertainty persists as to their capacity for successful aerial dispersal. Evidence exists that, under some conditions, aphids can be wind-borne over long distances, i.e. hundreds of kilometers over desert or sea. It has been argued, in the recent past, that this phenomenon may be part of a strategy to locate fresh host plants in new distant areas. However, the proportion of these insects successfully colonizing new hosts is unknown. 2. Other work using meteorological backtracking has also indicated long-distance movement, but the accuracy of such predictions is dubious unless the altitude of transport is known. Mark-releaseecapture experiments with such small insects have limited potential due to large dilution effects. Static ‘snap-shots’ of demographic population densities, using suction traps, cannot accurately distinguish local aerial density fluxes and population movements from a distance. However, genetic and physiological markers may provide more direct information on population mixing; for example, some allozyme studies have shown a limited level of inter-population gene flow. 3. Under suitable conditions, aphids take off, maintain flight and alight in response to the appropriate visual and olfactory cues. Undoubtedly successful long-distance movement occurs from time to time, but its ecological relevance may have been overstated in the past. It may be selectively disadvantageous for aphids to move from areas containing their host plants. In contrast, it is advantageous for aphids to maximise their chances of survival and reproductive success by landing on suitable plant hosts at the earliest opportunity. 4. The clonal nature of aphids (a single genotype may comprise vast numbers of individuals) means that there may be advantages to phenotypic variation between individuals in the readiness to move. Recent evidence indicates that such a variation exists in the duration of the behavioural migratory phase, the initial period of maiden flight when host-plant cues are ignored and when landing is inhibited. 5. The relative biological importance of short- us. long-distance movements is reassessed with reference to plant virus epidemiology and the spread of new genotypes, e.g. insecticide resistance. It is concluded that the biological relevance of short-distance movements have a much greater impact on population and genotype distribution than long-distance movements, which may be comparatively infrequent.  相似文献

One of the leading causes of mortality in diabetics is myocardial disease. In the past few years this subject has generated a significant amount of interest with the result that myocardial problems associated with diabetes are far better understood. Though originally thought to occur as a result of atherosclerosis, various studies have shown that heart disease can occur in the absence of atherosclerosis, suggesting a diabetic cardiomyopathy. Using diabetic animals, it has been possible to characterize diabetes-induced myocardial abnormalities. Diabetic rat hearts do not respond to conditions of high stress as well as controls. The functional depression is accompanied by altered cardiac enzyme systems. A decrease in myosin ATPase activity which appears to be a result of diabetes-induced hypothyroidism is seen. Also, a depression of sarcoplasmic reticular calcium ATPase, along with a depression of calcium uptake by the SR, is seen in diabetic rat hearts. Na+, K+ ATPase activity has also been shown to be depressed and the depression appears to correlate with depressed atrial contractility. High levels of circulating fats in diabetics may alter the integrity of membranes leading to altered enzyme activities. Insulin treatment has been relatively successful at reversing or preventing myocardial changes in the diabetic rat. Other treatments that have been studied include thyroid hormone treatment, since the depression of myosin ATPase can be corrected by such treatment; and carnitine treatment, as the elevation of long chain acyl carnitines (LCAC) and the resulting depression of calcium uptake in the SR can be so normalized. These treatments have not been successful at normalizing cardiac function. A combination of the two treatments normalized function only partially, suggesting that factors besides myosin ATPase and SR calcium uptake are involved. Other treatments that have been tried include vanadate, methyl palmoxirate, and choline and methionine. Vanadate treatment has proved to be encouraging in that it normalizes both function and hyperglycemia. Methyl palmoxirate, a fatty acid analog, normalized only the elevation of LCAC but did not affect function. Methionine and choline were only partially successful in preventing the functional alterations of diabetic rat hearts. The purpose of the present article is to review our understanding of diabetes-induced myocardial problems and their possible causes. Findings from our laboratory and others are described in which attempts have been made to normalize cardiac function.  相似文献

Since agriculture began, drought has been on of the major plagues affecting crop production causing famine and death. Despite many decades of research, drought continues to be a major challenge to agricultural scientists. This is due to the unpredictability of its occurrence, severity, timing and duration; and to the interaction of drought with other abiotic stresses, particularly extremes of temperature and variations in nutrients availability; and with biotic stresses. Breeding has not been as effective in improving crop production under drought-stress conditions as it has in their absence — or where the stress can be alleviated by irrigation. This paper argues that the relative lack of success of breeding for stress conditions in general, and for drought-stress conditions in particular, can be partly attributed to use of the same breeding approach that is successful for favourable environments. A different breeding approach for drought-stress conditions is discussed in relation to the environment in which selection should be conducted, the germplasm to be used, and the experimental designs and plot techniques to be employed.  相似文献

Programmed cell death (PCD) plays an important role in plant growth and development as well as in stress responses. During male gametophyte development, it has been proposed that PCD may act as a cellular surveillance mechanism to ensure successful progression of male gametogenesis, and this suicide protective machinery is repressed under favorable growth conditions. However, the regulatory mechanism of male gametophyte-specific PCD remains unknown. Here, we report the use of a TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling-based strategy for genetic screening of Arabidopsis mutants that present PCD phenotype during male gametophyte development. By using this approach, we identified 12 mutants, designated as pcd in male gametogenesis (pig). pig mutants are defective at various stages of male gametophyte development, among which nine pig mutants show a microspore-specific PCD phenotype occurring mainly around pollen mitosis I or the bicellular stage. The PIG1 gene was identified by map-based cloning, and was found to be identical to ATAXIA TELANGIECTASIA MUTATED (ATM), a highly conserved gene in eukaryotes and a key regulator of the DNA damage response. Our results suggest that PCD may act as a general mechanism to safeguard the entire process of male gametophyte development.  相似文献
