Controlled feeding experiments can provide valuable insights into food selection of herbivores. We conducted cafeteria trials on captive yearling white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) during 2 years to determine feeding preferences in relation to plant chemical constituents, i.e., nitrogen and fibers. We simultaneously offered 8 species of cultivated and wild plants in monthly foraging trials conducted from June to October. We predicted that species preferences would be positively related to protein content from June to August and to digestible energy in September and October. As predicted, crude protein (CP) was positively related to feeding preferences, particularly as summer progressed. Feeding preferences were also negatively related to fiber content, especially in early summer. Our results indicate high protein needs over the complete growing season for yearling deer but a decrease in overall plant selectivity as summer progresses. Our results also suggest that deer browsing on cultivated plants might be due to higher CP content of cultivated plants than wild plants. To prevent deer impact on crops, managers should favor regeneration of plants rich in CP content in forests. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

We observed the foraging behavior of orangutans in Central Indonesian Borneo during October, November, and December 1980, and analyzed food and nonfood items for water content, neutral detergent fiber, crude protein, available crude protein, and protein:fiber ratio and the presence of alkaloids and tannins. The diet of the orangutan during this season was unusual because it consisted predominantly of seeds and unripe, rather than ripe, fruits. Also, the major diet item, the seeds ofIrvingia malayana, had been ignored in previous years when it had fruited. In leaves, protein content was more closely associated with food choice than either neutral detergent fiber or the protein:fiber ratio. Flowers had the highest protein content and protein:fiber ratio of any food item. Tannins were found in most food items, but the presence of alkaloids was found in only one.  相似文献

Models of herbivore diversification rely heavily on adaptations that reflect the nutritional quality of foods consumed. In particular, browsers and grazers are expected to show dichotomous adaptations to deal with high quality (concentrate) browse-based and poor quality grass-based diets, respectively. In this study, we test the widespread assumption that browse represents a higher quality food source than grass. We analyzed plants from a South African savanna, collected over one dry and one wet season across several habitat types, for percent nitrogen (%N), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and acid detergent lignin (ADL) to compare variations in nutritional value of different food types. Results show consistently higher %N and lower NDF and ADF of tree foliage and forbs compared to monocots, but the former have consistently higher ADL, implying a higher fiber digestibility in grass compared with browse. Some fruit species have a high NDF and ADL content, implying poorer nutritional value than is commonly assumed. Our findings are in agreement with several other studies depicting relatively poor digestibility of browse (tree foliage and fruit) compared to grass. Reference to browse as high quality foods is therefore misleading, and models of herbivory that rest on this assumption require revision. The more efficient fiber digestibility recorded in grazers compared to browsers cannot be treated as an adaptation to poor quality diets, but rather to maximize benefits of higher fiber digestibility of grass. Spatio-seasonal variations in plant nutritional seem to reflect seasonal and spatial diet changes expected for grazers and intermediate (mixed) feeders. We propose that future studies require further detail on variations in diet, diet quality, and digestive efficiency to properly understand mechanisms of adaptation.  相似文献

Five white-rot basidiomycetes were evaluated for their potential to improve ruminal degradation of wheat straw.Polyorus brumalis, Lyophyllum ulmarium III,Trametes gibbosa, Pleurotus ostreatus, and aPleurotus ostreatus mutant were incubated on wheat straw for 30 d at 28°C. Detergent fiber, crude protein andin vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) were determined. The results showed increasing crude protein and ash contents in fungus-treated straw. IVDMD values were increased in straws treated withP. ostreatus, P. ostreatus mutant andT. gibbosa only. Relative to untreated wheat straw the detergent fiber content—neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) was reduced in fungus-treated straw and out of three fractions—hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin, hemicellulose showed the largest proportionate loss whereas lignin the smallest one in all 5 samples of fungus treated straw.  相似文献

The effects of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) treatments on wheat straw (WS) and various cellulosic substrates were determined by measuring susceptibility to degradation by mixed ruminal organisms or Bacteroides succinogenes S85. In vitro incubations were used to measure differences in fermentation resulting from each successive step in the AHP treatment process. In vitro incubations through 48 or 108 h were conducted to measure these differences. The AHP treatment of WS increased (P less than 0.05) dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber degradation over control WS when these substrates were incubated with mixed ruminal microorganisms or B. succinogenes S85. Fermentations containing AHP-treated WS had greater (P less than 0.05) microbial purine (RNA) and volatile fatty acid concentrations by 12 h compared with those containing untreated or NaOH-treated WS. Xylose in AHP-treated WS was utilized more extensively (P less than 0.05) by 12 h compared with the xylose of untreated or NaOH-treated WS. Treatment with AHP removed 23% of the alkali-labile phenolic compounds from WS. When substrates with high levels of crystalline cellulose (raw cotton fiber, Solka floc, and Sigmacell-50) were treated with NaOH or AHP and incubated for 108 h with B. succinogenes S85, extent of acid detergent fiber degradation of cotton fiber and Sigmacell-50 was similar to that of their respective controls. Sodium hydroxide and AHP treatments were effective in increasing acid detergent fiber degradation of the Solka floc which contained, on average, 3.3 and 4.8 percentage units more acid detergent lignin and hemicellulose, respectively, than cotton fiber and Sigmacell-50.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Feeding preference trials conducted with male and female crayfish ( Orconectes virilis ) showed that out of ten submersed aquatic plant species, Chara sp. and Lemna trisulca were the preferred food sources, followed by Myriophyllum exalbescens or Utricularia vulgaris .
2. Analysis of plant fibre, alkaloid, total phosphorus, total and available nitrogen, and organic content showed that crayfish feeding preferences were not related ( P >0.5) to plant fibre or alkaloid content but were negatively correlated ( P <0.05) with plant nutrient content such that species of low nutritional value ( Chara and Lemna ) were consistently preferred.
3. Despite this preference for low nutrient food, daily intake rates by crayfish for phosphorus, nitrogen and organic matter were greatest when feeding on Lemna or Chara due to the large quantity consumed.
4. We suggest that feeding preferences of O. virilis are not determined by plant chemistry but, rather, relate to ease of handling small, short, bottom-dwelling plants such as Chara and Lemna as compared with large erect, roseate or floating-leaved forms. Because crayfish are selective herbivores, their introduction into waters where they do not naturally occur could have a dramatic effect on both the species composition and biomass of submersed plants.  相似文献

Summary In most plant breeding programs, selection of the best commercially suitable cultivars for a target group of environments is based on information obtained from evaluation trials cultivated in a sample of environments. Information on the performance of cultivars collected in a sample of environments can only be approximate and, consequently, selection of the best cultivar involves choosing among cultivars that respond uncertainly in many environments. The agronomic and/or economic value of a cultivar across environments may be considered the general or overall utility of the cultivar. Data from a sample of environments therefore provides only an estimate of any cultivar's overall utility, with the overall goal of selection among all cultivars being the maximization of the expected utility. Within this frame-work, expected utility maximization, an approach to decision making that has been well developed in the disciplines of economics and statistics, can assist the plant breeder in making such decisions. This research was initiated (1) to determine how expected utility maximization might be used to develop indices that are useful for selecting broadly adapted plant cultivars, and (2) to determine how the breeder's preferences might affect choice of the best cultivar. The data used in this research were from USDA Regional Soybean Tests. The results indicated that expected utility maximization, which explicitly incorporates into the selection rule the plant breeder's preferences regarding stability, can be a useful aid in the selection of stable plant cultivars.  相似文献

The kinetic aspects of amphiphile interaction with intact membranes (unilamellar and multilamellar liposomes, sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles) were studied, with the nonionic detergent octa(ethylene glycol) dodecyl monoether (C12E8) as a prototype. C12E8 was bound to these membranes noncooperatively and with a maximum of 0.6-0.8 mol per mole of phospholipid, before the onset of solubilization. Binding was not affected by ultrasonication to expose internal binding sites on the inner leaflet. All detergent could be removed from the membranes by treatment with hydrophobic beads. Furthermore, bound detergent, also from the inside of multilayered liposomes, comprising 10-20 bilayers, was quickly released by dilution of the membranes, followed by gel filtration. The time course of these processes was investigated with a rapid-filtration apparatus, using glass fiber filters to deposit membrane material. Both detergent binding and removal could be described by a monoexponential process with a half-time of approximately 350 ms for all types of membranes. Binding of detergent enhanced the intrinsic fluorescence of sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles. This occurred in less than 100 ms, probably as the result of direct interaction of C12E8 with Ca2+-ATPase at a few binding sites. The data show that flip-flop of C12E8 across lipid membranes is a rapid process that cannot account for incomplete detergent removal in reconstitution experiments [Ueno, M., Tanford, C., & Reynolds, J. A. (1984) Biochemistry 23, 3070-3076]. It is also suggested that other nonionized amphiphiles, including those with an anesthetic action, rapidly gain access to membrane proteins on the inside of the cell, even when used at low, clinical doses.  相似文献

Maize silage is a significant energy source for animal production operations, and the efficiency of the conversion of forage into animal mass is an important consideration when selecting cultivars for use as feed. Fiber and lignin are negatively correlated with digestibility of feed, so the development of forage with reduced levels of these cell-wall components (CWCs) is desirable. While variability for fiber and lignin is present in maize germplasm, traditional selection has focused on the yield of the ear rather than the forage quality of the whole plant, and little information is available concerning the genetics of fiber and lignin. The objectives of this study were to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for fiber and lignin in the maize stalk and compare them with QTLs from other populations. Stalk samples were harvested from 191 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of B73 (an inbred line with low-to-intermediate levels of CWCs) x De811 (an inbred line with high levels of CWCs) at two locations in 1998 and one in 1999 and assayed for neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and acid detergent lignin (ADL). The QTLs were detected on nine chromosomes, mostly clustered in concordance with the high genetic correlations between NDF and ADF. Adjustment of NDF for ADF and ADF for ADL revealed that most of the variability for CWCs in this population is in ADF. Many of the QTLs detected in this study have also been detected in other populations, and several are linked to candidate genes for cellulose or starch biosynthesis. The genetic information obtained in this study should be useful to breeding efforts aimed at improving the quality of maize silage.  相似文献

Abstract

This study compared the nutritional indices in third instar female nymphs of the tropical grasshopper, Poecilocerus bmtonius, after feeding on Calotropis procera or wheat seedling. Analysis of the main and interactive effects of feeding on C. procera indicates that nymph performance was not affected by the cardenolides present in C. procera. The rate of consumption and assimilation on C. procerawas higher when compared with that of wheat seedlings and weight gain of the nymphs on C. procera was correlated to higher assimilation. The relative consumption rate (RCR) and relative growth rate (RGR) were significantly higher in nymphs fed on C. procera than in those fed on wheat seedlings. Feeding on wheat seedlings significantly reduced the approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), and efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD). Feeding on wheat seedlings resulted in 60% mortality of nymphs before moulting to the fourth instar stage. The nutritional indices were also estimated after feeding on C. procera only by fourth instar nymphs.  相似文献

The acceptability and digestibility of a high-fiber biscuit-based diet was investigated using two adult male Colobus guereza animals. Although the animals were initially reluctant to accept the biscuit, it was eventually readily consumed. Apparent digestion coefficients for the diet (average composition, dry matter basis: 16% crude protein, 25% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 9.5% acid detergent fiber (ADF), 1.2% acid lignin) determined by total fecal collection were 0.871 for dry matter, 0.813 for NDF, 0.693 for ADF, and 0.208 for acid lignin. Fiber digestive capabilities in C. guereza generally exceeded those reported in ruminant species based on predictive equations. Use of acid lignin and Cr2O3 as markers underestimated dry matter digestibility by 3.9 and 6.0%, respectively.  相似文献

In different ecosystems herbivores highly prefer particular plant species. This is often explained in a stoichiometric framework of nutrient‐based plant adaptations to herbivory. We hypothesize that such super‐palatability can also arise as an evolutionary by‐product of osmoregulatory adaptations of plants to stressful environmental conditions, as salinity, drought and cold. Here, we investigate in a coastal salt marsh why some plant species are highly preferred by migratory brent geese Branta bernicla bernicla in spring while others are avoided. This salt marsh is an important spring staging site for the geese. Sufficient energy storage in a short period is critical to enable their northward migration to Siberia and subsequent reproduction. We test if geese prefer plants that balance their internal osmotic potential with the saline environment through energy‐rich soluble sugars over plant species that use (compartmentalized) salts for this. We find that plant nitrogen and acid detergent fiber content, classic predictors of herbivore preferences, poorly explain which plants the geese prefer. Instead, plant species that are highly preferred by the geese adapt to salinity by high soluble sugar concentrations while avoided species do this by high plant salt concentrations. Thus, the type of osmoregulatory adaptation to stress displayed by different plant species is a good predictor for the food preference of geese on this salt marsh. We suggest that variation in other types of osmoregulation‐based stress adaptations, as plant cold adaptations in tundras and plant drought adaptations in savannas, have similar important consequences for trophic interactions.  相似文献

为明确绢蒿荒漠草地牛粪的分解规律,分别在5月(春季)和9月(秋季)设置不同堆置时间点(0、7、29、48、58 h),明确粪便理化性质变化规律,同时设置不同开口的网笼(无网笼、上下开口、上开口、全封口),探讨各生态功能类群粪甲虫对粪便分解的影响。结果表明: 春季的粪甲虫种类数显著高于秋季,秋季的粪甲虫数量显著高于春季。春季粪便的水分、全碳、全氮、全磷下降主要集中在0~29 h,堆置29 h时粪便的水分、全碳、全氮、全磷分别降低39.4%、13.9%、32.1%、26.7%。堆置58 h时粪便的中性洗涤纤维和酸性洗涤纤维分别显著降低8.0%和16.0%。秋季粪便的水分、中性洗涤纤维、酸性洗涤纤维在0~7 h内下降速度最快,堆置7 h时分别降低85.6%、10.2%和20.2%。7~58 h内中性洗涤纤维和酸性洗涤纤维上升,58 h时粪便的中性洗涤纤维和酸性洗涤纤维分别升高20.0%和13.7%。全碳、全氮和全磷的分解主要集中在0~29 h内,堆置29 h时分别降低17.5%、55.0%和64.8%。不同开口的网笼有效阻止了相应生态功能类群粪甲虫的进驻,随着粪甲虫生态功能类群的增加,粪便分解速度加快,无网笼状态下的粪便分解速度显著高于其它处理。粪甲虫种类、数量以及粪便堆置时间均显著影响牛粪的分解过程。  相似文献

2008年9月至2010年8月,对广西宜州龙江河畔赤腹松鼠采食选择的季节性变化进行分析.赤腹松鼠对榕树的采食量最大,约占总采食量的36.53%,食物采食选择的种类存在显著差异(P<0.05),各季节采食的种类无显著变化(P>0.05);取食偏好分析、食物生态位宽度和重叠度结果表明,夏季的生态位宽度最大,为4.1545,秋季的生态位宽度最小,为3.5001,夏季和秋季的生态位重叠度最大,为0.9882,夏季和冬季的生态位重叠度最小,为0.9343.  相似文献

The plant cell wall may play an important role in defence against herbivores since it can be both a barrier to, and nutrient diluter of, the easily digested cell contents. The aim of this study was to investigate the digestibility of the cell wall of three grasses, Triticum aestivum L., Dactyloctenium radulans (R. Br.) Beauv., and Astrebla lappacea (Lindl.) Domin, by the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera Walker (Orthoptera: Acrididae, Acridinae) as determined by the Van Soest method [ Van Soest PJ, Robertson JB & Lewis BA (1991) Methods for dietary fiber, neutral detergent fiber, and nonstarch polysaccharides in relation to animal nutrition. Journal of Dairy Science 74: 3583–3597]. Determination of plant cell wall digestion by locusts required a precise methodological procedure to determine both the exact intake and the concentration of cell wall in the diet and the faeces. Plant cell wall determination is affected by the particle size distribution of the dried plant material. All three grasses differed in the percentage of cell wall per gram dry matter and the proportions of hemicellulose, cellulose, and acid‐detergent sulphuric lignin within the cell wall. The locust was unable to digest the cell wall of any of the grasses. Thus, plant cell walls are a mechanical barrier hindering locusts assimilating nutrients. That is, access, rather than nutrient concentration per se, may be limiting nutrient factor.  相似文献

The coconut hispine beetle, Brontispa longissima, is a serious invasive pest of coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) in Southeast Asia and the Pacific region. Recently, however, it has been reported that on Ishigaki Island, Japan, where C. nucifera is rare, the endemic palm Satakentia liukiuensis serves as a regular host. To explore this phenomenon, we examined the preferences of the beetle for the two palm hosts by choice tests and measurements of feeding amount using four different groups: naïve adults obtained from a colony reared on C. nucifera (NC); naïve adults from a colony reared on S. liukiuensis (NS); wild adults collected on C. nucifera on Ishigaki Island (WC); and wild adults collected on S. liukiuensis on Ishigaki Island (WS). Both NC and NS consumed significantly more C. nucifera leaves than S. liukiuensis leaves and were observed more often on the leaves of C. nucifera. These results suggest that B. longissima has an innate preference for C. nucifera. In contrast, field‐collected adults (WC, WS) initially showed preferences for the species on which they were collected, but after exposure to the other host plant for 2 weeks, their preferences for that host increased. These results suggest that the feeding experience of B. longissima adults affected their subsequent host preferences. This flexible host preference may have facilitated the beetle’s successful establishment in novel Japanese habitats where the original host plant was rare.  相似文献

Plant cell walls of forage provide a major source of energy for ruminant animals. Digestion of cell walls is limited by the presence of lignin, therefore the improving the digestibility of forages by reducing lignin content is a major goal in forage crop breeding programs. A recombinant inbred line maize population was used to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and acid detergent lignin (ADL) of leaf-sheath and stalk tissues. All traits were positively genetically correlated. The larger genetic correlations were between NDF and ADF in sheaths (r = 0.84), NDF and ADF (r = 0.96), ADF and ADL (r = 0.83), and NDF and ADL (r = 0.76) in stalks. Twelve QTL were detected for NDF and 11 QTL for ADF in leaf-sheaths. Eight QTL detected for both traits were defined by the same or linked marker loci. Eight QTL were associated with leaf-sheath ADL. Eleven QTL were detected for NDF and ADF, and 12 QTL for ADL in stalks. Nine of eleven QTL detected for both NDF and ADF in stalks coincided in their genomic position. A high proportion of QTL detected for these traits had the same parental effects and genomic locations, suggesting that it is only necessary to select on one fiber component (NDF or ADF) to improve digestibility. Favorable correlated responses of unselected fiber components are expected due to coincident genomic locations of QTL and the high genetic correlation between fiber components. Several QTL detected in this study coincided in their positions with putative cellulose synthase genes from maize.  相似文献

Feeding and oviposition preferences of the boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman, for four different cotton square size classes in field conditions of the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas were studied during 2002 and 2003. Percentages of large (5.5-8-mm-diameter) squares used for oviposition and feeding were greater than pinhead or match-head squares. The preference for large squares as food and associated accelerated fecundity explain the substantial boll weevil population buildups that occur after large squares form. Medium-sized (3-5.5-mm-diameter) squares also were used but less than large squares. Feeding and oviposition on pinhead (1-2-mm-diameter) and match-head (2-3-mm-diameter) squares were negligible. Although planting date did not affect oviposition or feeding preferences for squares larger than pinhead and match-head sizes, the least amount of either damage to large squares was found in the earliest plantings during both years. This study indicates that pinhead and match-head squares, regardless of planting date, do not require pesticide applications to protect against boll weevil feeding and oviposition.  相似文献

In an attempt to elucidate the role of the dietary fermentable fiber in reduction of hyperlipidemia, we substituted 30% wheat starch with 30% sugar-beet fiber in rats fed a fructose-based (41% fructose), low-fat (2% corn oil) diet. Male Wistar rats ate the test diets for 3 weeks. Feeding the sugar-beet fiber (SBF) diet resulted in a significant enlargement of the cecum; it also increased the concentration of volatile fatty acids compared with rats fed a fiber-free (FF) diet. Feeding SBF decreased plasma triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations in the postprandial as well as the postabsorptive period. In the liver, triglyceride levels were depressed in concert with the decreased liver lipogenesis and the post-Triton triglyceride secretion. Liver cholesterol levels were unaffected by SBF diet feeding. SBF-fed animals were markedly less fat compared with fiber-free-diet-fed rats. Adipose tissue lipogenesis was depressed in the postprandial period in SBF-fed animals. In short, this study suggests that substitution of easily digested carbohydrates by certain fermentable fibers may play an interesting role in the reduction of hyperlipidemia and obesity.  相似文献
