New data on fish populations of a closed desert watershed of Mongolia were obtained in 1990 and 1991. For this region periodic droughts, with the accompanying disappearance of lakes and some parts of rivers, are typical. Two forms of a Cyprinid species Oreoleuciscus humilis (dwarf Altai osman) occur in this region during wet periods which usually last for 10-30 years. The dwarf form, is characterized by a maximum SL of 200 mm and early maturation (SL = 70 mm, four years of age). It inhabits small desert rivers in dry periods which last for 3–5 years and both rivers and the riparian zone of lakes during wet periods. The larger lake form occurs only in lakes during the wet periods. It can attain a maximum size of 450 mm and matures in six years, SL = 200 mm. These two forms of O. humilis differ in feeding habits, rates of growth, and morphology. The dwarf form feeds mainly on insect larvae and on plants. The lake form consumes the same food items until it reaches 180 mm SL and then becomes piscivorous. Populations of O. humilis in lakes are restored after a dry period, originating anew from river populations of the dwarf form.Currently there is a transition from a dry period to a wet one. Orog-Nur (one of the lakes of Lake Valley) has been filling with water since 1990. In July 1991 the depth of this lake reached 0.5–1.0 m and fish were found in the lake. The large individuals of dwarf form which came to the lake from the Tuyn-Gol River became cannibals, and their growth rate increased rapidly. The homogeneous environment and low food supply in the restored lakes are suggested to be the main causes of these phenomena.  相似文献

Abundances of white sucker, 100–500 mm FL, were not significantly different among the epilimnia, metalimnia and portions of the hypolimnia shallower than 20 m in each of two lakes. However, small suckers < 200 mm were captured most frequently in the epilimnion and no white suckers were captured in the deepest region, 20–38 m, of the two lakes. White suckers consumed prey from all three temperature zones in each lake. Prominent food items were Hyalella azteca and the chironomid larvae Heterotrissocladius, Djalmabatista and Procladius. Despite differences in relative densities of benthic invertebrates among thermal zones of the two lakes, suckers in neither lake foraged exclusively on prey of epilimnetic origin. Suckers captured in the metalimnia foraged on invertebrates that were common to all three thermal zones. And, only 0–4% of the suckers captured in the hypolimnia of the two lakes contained prey that were unique to the epilimnia. Suckers caught in the hypolimnia mainly consumed deep water invertebrates; 83% of the suckers foraged in the metalimnion and hypolimnion of Islets Lake and 45% foraged in the hypolimnion in Burnt Island Lake. Consequently there was little evidence of a massive inshore feeding migration followed by a post-feeding return to the hypolimnion. Northern pike and lake trout rarely fed on white suckers in these lakes and thus piscivory was an unlikely factor in the observed distribution of suckers.  相似文献

To compare the relative magnitude of variation in shell morphology within and among lakes, Elliptio complanata were collected from low and high exposure areas in each of four small lakes in south-central Ontario. Nested ANOVA's on shell length, height, width and weight revealed that shell morphology varied much more between sites of differing exposure within a lake than among lakes of differing alkalinity. Canonical variates analysis showed that clams from high exposure areas had larger and proportionately taller and heavier shells than those from low exposure areas. There was no relationship between alkalinity of lakes and shell morphology. These results suggest that the use of unionid shell morphology to predict long-term whole lake water chemistry (e.g. alkalinity) requires sampling designs which take into account within-lake variation in shell morphology.  相似文献

We studied the egg banks of Daphnia gr. longispina in four acidified lakes in the Bohemian Forest (Czech Republic, Europe). Daphnia had become extinct in three of the studied lakes due to anthropogenic acidification and we assessed the possibility of autochthonous recovery of the population after recent amelioration of the lake environment. We determined the ephippia distribution in eleven cores 10–30 cm long, and the state of Daphnia resting eggs in over 13 000 ephippia from eight cores. Apparently well-preserved eggs were used for hatching experiments and for DNA amplification. Vertical profiles of ephippia densities in several cores did not agree with historical data on the Daphnia presence in the lakes, as the sediment had been repeatedly disturbed by human activities in the past. Ephippia are present near the surface of the sediment in all lakes, and they might therefore receive hatching cues. We were not able, however, to prove that viable eggs are present in the ephippia banks of the lakes. The percentage of the well-preserved eggs in all but one core was below 1%. In addition, no egg hatched in the hatching experiments and we were not able to amplify DNA from the preserved eggs of lakes where Daphnia is extinct, although amplification from relatively young eggs from the fourth lake was successful in 60% of the cases. We conclude that the recovery of Daphnia populations in studied lakes from autochthonous sources is unlikely.  相似文献

The zooplankton communities of seven Rotorua, New Zealand, lakes of different trophic status were studied in 1977–78. They were generally dominated by the calanoid copepod, Calamoecia lucasi. Bosmina meridionalis occurred in all the lakes and Ceriodaphnia dubia in most. Only small numbers of Macrocyclops albidus ever occurred. Rotifers were not studied in detail. Community composition was similar to that in other northern New Zealand lakes. No well defined patterns of seasonal change in abundance were found and the timing of changes, which were of low magnitude, was different in each lake. Clutch sizes in all species were small. Calamoecia population parameters were analysed using multivariate methods and shown to be related to lake trophic level. Population densities were higher in more productive lakes whereas breeding levels were inversely related to indices of trophic status and population abundance. It is suggested that the populations, as in other northern New Zealand lakes, are food-limited, probably as a consequence of a lack of marked climatic seasonality and the absence of major predation pressures. Groupings of the lakes based on the Calamoecia data are in general agreement with those derived from parallel studies of water chemistry, phytoplankton and macrobenthos.  相似文献

Chemical and chlorophyll a concentrations of seven Ethiopian rift-valley lakes were studied during 1990–2000. Results were compared with studies made between 1960 and 1990 in an attempt to detect long-term changes. Three different trends are apparent in the salinities (and the correlates conductivity, alkalinity, sodium concentration) of these lakes over the last 40 years: three lakes (lakes Zwai, Shalla and Abaya) have maintained their salinity levels from the 1960s, two lakes (lakes Langano and Awassa) have become more dilute, and the salinity levels of Lake Chamo and the soda lake Abijata have increased. Concentrations of silicate decreased in almost all the lakes whereas soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) increased in most lakes. Chlorophyll a concentrations were higher in the recent samples from all lakes except two, which in conjunction with results from SRP and silicate analyses suggest eutrophication in four out of the seven lakes studied. The study relates salinization in lakes with closed drainage to increased human activities in their catchments, intensified by changes in climate during the last three decades in sub-Saharan Africa.  相似文献

Abstract The non-native rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) has invaded many lakes of northern Wisconsin, profoundly changing littoral zones in the process. There are other lakes that have been invaded, but do not exhibit these changes. We hypothesized that endogenous feedbacks could form involving rusty crayfish, the macrophytes they destroy, and Lepomis species whose abundance is positively related to macrophyte abundance and also consume juvenile crayfish. We assessed this proposal with long-term data from one lake, a regional comparative study, and a case study of Lepomis predation on crayfish. Through time and across lakes, abundances of rusty crayfish, littoral macrophytes and species of the genus Lepomis were related in a fashion that indicated a set of feedbacks that regulate the abundance of all three. Intense predation on juvenile crayfish by abundant Lepomis is capable of maintaining some crayfish populations at low abundance. Thus, some lakes display profound ecological changes where crayfish achieve high abundance, and others sustain crayfish at low abundance. Consequently, lakes invaded by rusty crayfish may take on the appearance of alternative ecological regimes. Direct experimentation is necessary to determine if, and under what conditions, a lake can exist in either regime. The aim of this study was to assess the value of phantom midge Chaoborus (Diptera: Chaoboridae) larvae as a palaeoenvironmental proxy in northern Europe. The presence of Chaoborus was examined in 80 small shallow lakes across Finland (60–70°N), based on their subfossil mandibles preserved in lake sediments. Chaoborus flavicans was present in 33 lakes, but was the most abundant midge taxon in only one of the lakes. Chaoborus crystallinus/obscurripes mandibles were present in two lakes. Statistical analyses showed that the distribution of Chaoborus was significantly correlated with lake depth and mean July air temperature. Chaoborus was absent in the northern study lakes, whereas the results indicated that C. flavicans was frequently found in small shallow lakes in southern Finland. Chaoborus flavicans was particularly abundant in fish-free, macrophyte-rich, dystrophic lakes, but absent in oligotrophic clear-water lakes having fish. The results of this study indicate that the subfossil mandibles of Chaoborus can provide valuable information in multiproxy palaeolimnological studies, especially when investigating past changes in water level and temperature in small shallow lakes in northern Europe. We examined the behavior of common loons, Gavia immer (Brünnich), breeding on small, shallow lakes in central Alberta, Canada that were naturally fishless or contained only small-bodied fishes (minnow lake). For both lake types, adults spent >90% of their time on the nesting lake and >50% of their time foraging. Adult loons on fishless lakes dove more frequently, but dives were of shorter duration than loons on lakes with fish. On two intensively studied fishless lakes, adults fed chicks macroinvertebrates, particularly leeches, whereas on a focal minnow lake, fish made up >70% of prey items delivered by adults. Chicks >36 days of age on a minnow lake spent >50% of their time foraging, whereas older chicks on fishless lakes were highly dependent on food provisioning by adults. Models based on observed foraging patterns indicated that prey size was a better predictor of success in meeting energetic requirements than was feeding behavior (e.g., dive rate, dive success). For most models, estimated energetic intake was higher for loons on minnow lakes than on fishless lakes. Our behavioral observations and model results are consistent with surveys in central Alberta that indicate that breeding Common Loons frequently establish territories on small lakes, but that chicks hatched on lakes completely lacking fish rarely fledge and only if sufficient large invertebrates such as leeches are available.  相似文献

Three lakes near the southern terminus of the Lake Wales Ridge of south-central Florida were studied. The lakes, all connected by either natural drainage or canals, vary significantly in terms of shoreline development. All three lakes are soft water systems with low concentrations of dissolved nutrients; however, rates of primary productivity and chlorophyll a appear to be correlated with the degree of shoreline development. Nutrient enrichment bioassay experiments in the laboratory showed that, in general, water from all the lakes responded to additions of nitrogen and phosphorus in combination. Samples from only one lake responded to enrichment with phosphorus alone, and no samples to additions of nitrogen alone. Two of the lakes can be classified as oligotrophic while the third is most probably eutrophic.  相似文献

Traditionally, the ribeirinhoeconomy has been based on strategies of multiple resource use including agriculture, fishing, and small-scale stock raising. In the last two decades though, ribeirinhostrategies of resource management have undergone major changes due to the decline of jute production (the principal cash crop), and the intensification of the commercial fisheries. As a result of these trends, there has been a shift of ribeirinholabor from agriculture to commercial fishing. Today, the diversity which once characterized ribeirinhosubsistence strategies is disappearing, and fishing has become the primary economic activity for the great majority of varzeafamilies. As pressure on varzeafisheries has increased, ribeirinhocommunities have attempted to assert control over local varzealakes and exclude fishermen from outside the community. In a number of cases, ribeirinhocommunities have closed lakes to outsiders and established informal lake reserves under local community management. These lake reserves are a promising strategy for managing lake fisheries on a sustainable basis.  相似文献

The combined effect of temperature, food level and the presence of an invertebrate predator on the body size of the rotifer Brachionus havanaensis were tested in this study. B. havanaensis was cultured at 15, 20, and 25°C under three different Chlorella vulgaris levels (0.5 × 106, 1.0 × 106 and 2.0 × 106 cells ml−1) in the presence and in the absence of Asplanchna girodi. For each treatment we maintained three replicates and constant (0.4 ind ml−1) population density of B. havanaensis. In treatments containing A. girodi, the predator was separated from the prey by a mesh (pore size 50 μm). On the last day of the experiment, a portion of the B. havanaensis population was sampled for several morphometric measurements (adult lorica length, width, posterior spine length, body volume, and the egg volume). Size measurements were done by drawing the specimens using a calibrated camera lucida. Statistically significant impact of temperature as well as the predator’s presence was observed on the lorica length, posterior spine, and egg volume of B. havanaensis. The interactions of food × temperature, or predator′s presence × food × temperature were non-significant (P > 0.05) for lorica length, spine length, body volume, and egg volume. Regardless of the type of treatment, there was a direct positive correlation between lorica length and width. Egg volume was linearly related to the adult size. Notably long posterior spines were observed in treatments containing the presence of A. girodi. Guest editors: S. S. S. Sarma, R. D. Gulati, R. L. Wallace, S. Nandini, H. J. Dumont & R. Encysted embryos (cysts) of the brine shrimp, Artemia provide an excellent model system for the study of biochemical adaptation to environmental extremes. Here, we describe an experiment in which cysts of A. franciscana from the San Francisco Bay (SFB), California, U.S.A., were inoculated into experimental ponds in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam where water temperatures are much higher than the SFB. Cysts produced in each of three successive growing seasons (1996–1998) were collected and examined in the laboratory for resistance to high temperature and relative contents of three stress proteins (Hsp-70, artemin and p26). Thermal adaptation took place rapidly, during the first growing season. The increase in thermal tolerance was reflected in an overall increase in stress protein content, compared to SFB cysts used for the initial inoculation. Also examined were cysts of A. tibetiana collected from a lake on the high plateau of Tibet, PR China, almost 4.5 km above sea level. These cysts were very sensitive to high temperatures, and contained much lower levels of all stress proteins examined, compared to A. franciscana cysts from SFB and Vietnam. Cysts of A. sinica, collected from a hypersaline lake in Inner Mongolia, PR China, were examined in the same fashion and found to be similar to SFB cysts in terms of thermal resistance and stress protein content. The harsh environments in which Artemia are found, and the great diversity of its habitats, world-wide, provide excellent opportunities to relate the ecological setting of an organism to the underlying physiological and biochemical processes enabling its survival.  相似文献

Adult roach (Rutilus rutilus) (13–25 cm) from two shallow lakes, one turbid and one with high water transparency, were tagged with surgically implanted miniature radio transmitters and their habitat use was monitored. Repeated tracking series over the course of the year provided information on seasonal changes in behaviour of roach in the two lakes. The results showed that the roach generally used the lakes only as summer habitat, whereas they moved into specific sheltered, restricted areas during winter. This behaviour was most pronounced in the lake with clear water, where roach gathered in large numbers in the stream in- and outlets as well as in other sheltered habitats where they remained rather passively during the 48 h tracking periods. In the turbid lake, many of the tagged roach, were even found in underground channels during the tracking in November. We see this behaviour as a response to low food abundance, decreased food demand and high predation risk, especially from birds. The tracking data from the clear lake showed that some tagged roach undertook swift habitat shifts from one refuge to the other. The traditional perception of the roach as a `lake fish' with an important structuring role in the lake ecosystem is undoubtedly true, but the present results suggest that roach are able to migrate between different habitat types and will do so if they can profit from this behaviour.  相似文献

Chlamydomonas acidophila faces high heavy-metal concentrations in acidic mining lakes, where it is a dominant phytoplankton species. To investigate the importance of metals to C. acidophila in these lakes, we examined the response of growth, photosynthesis, cell structure, heat-shock protein (Hsp) accumulation, and metal adsorption after incubation in metal-rich lake water and artificial growth medium enriched with metals (Fe, Zn). Incubation in both metal-rich lake water and medium caused large decreases in photosystem II function (though no differences among lakes), but no decrease in growth rate (except for medium + Fe). Concentrations of small Hsps were higher in algae incubated in metal-rich lake-water than in metal-enriched medium, whereas Hsp60 and Hsp70A were either less or equally expressed. Cellular Zn and Fe contents were lower, and metals adsorbed to the cell surface were higher, in lake-water-incubated algae than in medium-grown cells. The results indicate that high Zn or Fe levels are likely not the main or only contributor to the low primary production in mining lakes, and multiple adaptations of C. acidophila (e.g., high Hsp levels, decreased metal accumulation) increase its tolerance to metals and permit survival under such adverse environmental conditions. Supposedly, the main stress factor present in the lake water is an interaction between low P and high Fe concentrations.  相似文献

This study identifies environmental predictors of the condition of two introduced tilapia species (Oreochromis leucostictus and Tilapia zillii) that are known to have divergent trophic niches (planktivore and herbivore, respectively) in 17 crater lakes in western Uganda. We asked whether fish condition differs among lakes characterized by differences in fishing pressure and catchment deforestation; and we related relative condition factor to gradients of environmental variation across lakes. Lakes characterized by severe catchment deforestation tended to be lakes with high fishing pressure, so it was difficult to explore independent and interactive effects. However, mean relative condition factor was higher in populations with high fishing pressure compared to populations with low fishing pressure for both O. leucostictus and T. zillii. The condition of O. leucostictus populations was higher in lakes with severely deforested catchments; but mean relative condition factor of T. zillii did not differ between deforestation categories. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to describe the major environmental gradients of variation among the lakes; and PCA factor scores were regressed against relative fish condition. The association between fish condition and environmental gradients was stronger for O. leucostictus than for T. zillii. For O. leucostictus, fish condition was related to PC1 (43% of the variance) and factors that loaded most heavily included Chl-a, water transparency, lake area and depth, suggesting higher condition in lakes characterized by higher primary productivity and smaller size. For T. zillii, PC3 (11%) was the only axis related to fish condition; and factors that loaded most heavily included lake area (positive), and conductivity and total nitrogen (negative). Some of the larger lakes are characterized by higher availability of macrophytes that may positively affect the food base for T. zillii.  相似文献

The postglacial sediments of Kortowskie Lake contain well preserved chrysophycean cysts. Forty-six morphotypes were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). Ten new morphotypes of fossil chrysophycean cysts are described. Some of the most abundant taxa show clear trends associated with the increase in lake trophic status. The cyst flora is divided into four groups: eutrophic forms (Cysta globata, C. cortoviensis, C. vermicularis); oligotrophic forms (Cysta curvicollis); cool-water forms (Cysta carinifera, C. crassicollis, C. microspinosa, C. modica and Cysta stellata), and indifferent forms (all other morphotypes which did not show a clear tendency). The percentage abundance of chrysophycean cysts wa related to climate changes, showing a considerable increase during the Subboreal period. Two factors, lake fertility and water level changes affected the abundance of the fossil cyst flora in the sediments of Kortowskie Lake.  相似文献

Differences in reaction distance to prey fish by piscivorous salmonids can alter predator–prey interactions under different visual conditions. We compared reaction distances of three piscivorous salmonids commonly found in western lakes: cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarki utah, rainbow trout, O. mykiss, and the nonnative lake char, Salvelinus namaycush. Reaction distances to salmonid prey were measured as functions of light and turbidity in a controlled laboratory setting. In addition, predation rates and swimming speeds of lake char preying on juvenile cutthroat trout were measured experimentally under a range of light levels. Reaction distances for cutthroat trout and rainbow trout increased rapidly as light levels increased, reaching relatively constant reaction distances at higher light levels. Reaction distances for lake char were similar to cutthroat trout and rainbow trout at the lower light levels; however, lake char reaction distances continued to increase with increasing light intensity to asymptote at distances 65% higher than those for both cutthroat and rainbow trout. Predation rates by lake char were low for the darkest light levels, increased rapidly under low light levels (0.50–0.75lx), and then declined to an intermediate rate at all higher light levels. Swimming speeds by lake char also increased rapidly from extremely low light conditions to a peak and declined to an intermediate level at light levels above 1.00lx. These results suggest that, above the saturation intensity threshold, piscivorous lake char react to fish prey at greater distances than do cutthroat trout and rainbow trout. These differences may help explain the decline of native trout following the introductions of nonnative lake char in lakes and reservoirs of western North America.  相似文献

Many polluted lakes in Europe are being restored and phosphorus concentrations have dropped dramatically in these lakes. We studied the genetic structure of Daphnia galeata over the past 30 years in Lake Greifensee, Switzerland, a period during which the phosphorus concentration in the lake reduced dramatically. Distinct genotypes of D. galeata were hatched from diapausing eggs extracted from six different time horizons in dated sediments. We compared juvenile growth, size and egg production of D. galeata reared on high-P and low-P algae to investigate whether Daphnia have evolved to grow better on phosphorus-limited algae. Our results indicate that life histories of D. galeata differed significantly between both food types. We also found significant clone effects for size and egg number. But we found no significant interaction between the depth from which the clones were selected and food quality. This means that we found no evidence for adaptive micro-evolution in response to P reduction in the lake. We discuss our results in relation to other studies that found evidence for adaptive micro-evolution in comparable time frames.  相似文献

In Lake Wujka, a shallow, polymictic Antarctic lake situated at 15 m from the seashore, several yearly cohorts occur of the copepod Boeckella poppei and one of the fairy shrimp Branchinecta gaini. There is circumstantial evidence that the two species compete for food, and perhaps adult fairy shrimp feed on the nauplii of the copepod. Both species are positively influenced by a measure of salinity. However, when autumn storms massively sweep seawater into the lake, all fairy shrimp are wiped out; no hatching occurs until next spring. In B. poppei, some nauplii and copepodites survive or hatch after the salt flows out of the lake. This is an advantage to the copepod that may balance its coexistence with the shrimp. Its cycle is, however, aborted by the freezing of the lake. In contrast to many other Antarctic lakes, the life cycle of the crustaceans is therefore controlled by salinity rather than freezing.  相似文献
