The thickness of the cranial vault at the midline on the mid-frontal squama, pre-bregmatic einence, frontal at bregma, parietal at vertex, occipital at lambda and the external occipita1 protuberance was recorded in 40 male and 7 female Northern Chinese crania, 47 male and 52 female Australian Aboriginal crania and 13 male European crania using specially nodified vernier calipers. Comparison of vault thickness data obtained through direct measurement with those obtained fron lateral radiographs indicated that direct measurenent provided consistently more accurate results.
Male and fermale samples were processed separately so that the extent of sexbased variation could be examined.Student's t test was used to compare the sample means and the percentage of sexual dimorphism for each dimension was calculated according to Garn et al, (1964).The possibility of an allometric association between the thickness of the bones within the cranial vault, size of the cranial vault and stature was examined using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and the Australian Aboriginal sample.
All but one of the mean thickness dimensions in the Australian Aboriginal male sample is significantly greater than the Northern Chinese and European means. The female results support those obtained with the males.In both males and females thickness at the external occipital protuberance, in all of the populations examined,did not correlate highly with that obtained from other parts of the cranial vault.This reflects the high degree of morphological variation in the position of the internal occipital protuberance and its influence on cranial vault thickness dimensions recorded at the external occipital protuberance.The European and Northern Chinese samples have similar cranial vault thickness dimensions. The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient matrix scores provide sone support for a biological association between vault thickness and overall cranial size. However, there appears to be little support for an association between stature and cranial vault thickness. The difference between the male and female mean vault thickness dimensions were significant at bregma, vertex and the external occipital protuberance in Australian Aboriginals and lambda and the external occipital protuberance in Northern Chinese. Some caution is needed in the interpretation of the Northern Chinese female data as the sample is extremely small.
Evidence of trauma, supressed fractures, is extremely common on the vaults of Australian Aboriginal crania from southern and central Australia. Traditionally Australian Aboriginals, males and females, involved in agressive dispute will use a substantial wooden implement and strike to the head of thir opponent(Meggitt 1962).The injuries that result from this are more common in females than in male. This form of social interaction must have rigorously selected against those individuals with thinner bones in their cranial vaults. To a large degree this may explain the greatly thickened vaults in Australian Aboriginals relative to Europeans and Northern Chines.This may also provide a clue to the factors resulting in the development of marked cranial vault thickness in Homo erectus.

This examination of a Mimbres-Mogollon pueblo skeletal sample reveals a surprising percentage of individuals with occipital lesions. Each lesion is located in the approximate center of the squama immediately superior to the external occipital protuberance. Notably, no child over the age of 1 year exhibits a lesion that would have been active at the time of death, but a number of older children and adults exhibit evidence of healed lesions in this same area on the occipital. The restricted nature of these lesions, in terms of both their locations and ages of those actively affected, suggests that the use of cradleboards may have been at least a contributing, if not initiatory, factor in their creation. Specifically, this study suggests that the pressure and friction of an infant's head against a cradleboard may have 1) produced ischemic ulcers, 2) produced the conditions favorable for bacterial infections such as impetigo or carbuncles, or 3) complicated the treatment of other infections appearing on the back of the scalp. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

A reexamination of Eyasi 1, a later Middle Pleistocene east African neurocranium, reveals the presence of a suite of midoccipital features, including a modest nuchal torus that is limited to the middle half of the bone, the absence of an external occipital protuberance, and a distinct transversely oval suprainiac fossa. These features, and especially the suprainiac fossa, were considered to be uniquely derived for the European and western Asian Neandertals. These observations therefore indicate that these features are not limited to Neandertal lineage specimens, and should be assessed in terms of frequency distributions among later archaic humans.  相似文献

In this cross-sectional study performed on 147 healthy or osteoporotic, but otherwise normal premenopausal (n = 26 and n = 13, respectively) or postmenopausal (n = 40 and n = 68, respectively) women aged 40.1+/-9.9 and 61.9+/-8.9 years, respectively (range 20-82 years), serum ovarian and adrenal sex steroids and their relationship to bone mineral density (BMD) were evaluated. The levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), androstenedione (AD), and estradiol correlated positively with BMD at the hip and spine as did serum testosterone with BMD at the spine. An inverse relationship was found between sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels and BMD at the spine and hip. After adjustment for age, body mass, and sex steroid confounders, the bioavailable testosterone value (but not the DHEAS, DHEA, AD, or SHBG) values was demonstrated to be an independent determinant of BMD at the spine (beta 0.18, P<0.02) and hip (beta 0.24, P<0.02). Similarly, estradiol was found to be an independent determinant of BMD at the spine (beta 0.25, P<0.007). However, only SHBG levels (but not other steroid parameters) correlated positively with indices of bone remodeling, namely, serum osteocalcin and cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP). The present study suggests that a major decline in index of free testosterone (testosterone/SHBG) may influence the development of female osteoporosis. The clinical significance of circulating SHBG levels in the assessement of bone metabolic turnover remains to be established.  相似文献

The center of rotation (COR) of the upper cervical spine (UCS) is an important biomechanical landmark that is used to determine upper neck moment, particularly when evaluating injury risk in the automotive environment. However, neither the location of the UCS CORs nor the occipital condyles (OCs), which are frequently the referenced landmark for UCS CORs, have been measured with respect to known cranial landmarks. This study determines the CORs using pure bending (+/-3.5 N m), 3D digitization, and image analysis. Landmarks digitized included the OCs, external auditory meatus (EAM), infraorbital foramen, zygion, nasion, and the foramen magnum. The centroid of each occipital condylar surface (area 301+/-29.8 mm(2); length 25.4+/-3.2 mm) was located 18.4 mm posterior, 54.4 mm medial, and 31.0 mm inferior of the EAM. The UCS CORs were distinct: On average, OC-C1 CORs (22.5 mm posterior and 22.6 mm inferior to the left EAM) were superior and more posterior of OCs; C1-C2 CORs (7.4 mm posterior and 46.7 mm inferior to the left EAM) were inferior and more anterior of OC; and OC-C2 CORs (17.0 mm posterior and 33.1 mm inferior to the left EAM) were aligned with OC. There was a statistically significant difference between the percentage of UCS rotation in C1-C2 and OC-C1; 45% of the flexion and 71% of the extension occurred in OC-C1. Details of an anatomical variant with two pairs of distinct condylar surfaces are also presented.  相似文献

Instruments for measuring mobility in the cervical spine range from plumb-lines and inclinometers to sophisticated optoelectronic systems. In order to investigate the need and possible uses for an enhancement to a new diagnostic instrument, we examine some of the available diagnostic systems suitable for cervical motion analysis. These should be of practical use in a clinical setting for the diagnosis of soft tissue injuries. We begin by evaluating the respective roles of plain radiographs, cineradiography, computer tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging in examining the cervical spine. Then we consider Moiré photography, inclinometers, and some opto-electronic scanners, as well as the mathematical techniques needed to correlate skin and spine motion with these devices. We find that there does not appear to be an effective non-invasive tool for comprehensive clinical cervical motion analysis; in particular, coupled joint motion is inadequately quantified. Improperly diagnosed cervical spine injuries, such as hyperextension and hyperflexion, may result in chronic long-term effects. Therefore, instrumentation that would permit objective, routine clinical evaluation of patients could help to avoid such situations.  相似文献

Forty-one patients with rheumatoid arthritis involving the cervical spine had a posterior cervical arthrodesis. They were followed for a minimum period of seven years. The diagnoses prior to surgery included cranial settling, atlantoaxial subluxation, subaxial subluxation, and any combination of these three. All patients had posterior arthrodesis, with or without methylmethacrylate, and iliac crest autogenous bone graft. In addition, one patient had an anterior vertebrectomy, and two had transoral resection of the odontoid. Follow-up consisted of a subjective questionnaire, standard radiographs, and physical examination, including a neurologic exam. This information was compared to preoperative data available in the patient''s medical record, postoperative data, and the information obtained in a similar study undertaken in 1987. At the time of follow-up, thirteen patients were known to be dead. One patient could not be located. Of the remaining twenty-six patients, eighteen underwent the full examination, including physical exam and radiographs. The remaining nine patients were contacted and interviewed, but were unavailable for exam and radiographs. All patients considered the operation a success. Only one patient at follow-up had a non-union. This was stable over time. No patient had a deterioration in neurologic function. There was no significant degeneration or instability seen at levels adjacent to the fused segments as compared to the rest of the cervical spine. Posterior cervical spine arthrodesis for rheumatoid involvement of the neck is a safe, efficacious procedure with no significant deterioration of effects over time.  相似文献

Although considerable effort has been made to understand the biomechanical behavior of the adult cervical spine, relatively little information is available on the response of the pediatric cervical spine to external forces. Since significant anatomical differences exist between the adult and pediatric cervical spines, distinct biomechanical responses are expected. The present study quantified the biomechanical responses of human pediatric spines by incorporating their unique developmental anatomical features. One-, three-, and six-year-old cervical spines were simulated using the finite element modeling technique, and their responses computed and compared with the adult spine response. The effects of pure overall structural scaling of the adult spine, local component developmental anatomy variations that occur to the actual pediatric spines, and structural scaling combined with local component anatomy variations on the responses of the pediatric spines were studied. Age- and component-related developmental anatomical features included variations in the ossification centers, cartilages, growth plates, vertebral centrum, facet joints, and annular fibers and nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral discs. The flexibility responses of the models were determined under pure compression, pure flexion, pure extension, and varying degrees of combined compression-flexion and compression-extension. The pediatric spine responses obtained with the pure overall (only geometric) scaling of the adult spine indicated that the flexibilities consistently increase in a uniform manner from six- to one-year-old spines under all loading cases. In contrast, incorporation of local anatomic changes specific to the pediatric spines of the three age groups (maintaining the same adult size) not only resulted in considerable increases in flexibilities, but the responses also varied as a function of the age of the pediatric spine and type of external loading. When the geometric scaling effects were added to these spines, the increases in flexibilities were slightly higher; however, the pattern of the responses remained the same as found in the previous approach. These results indicate that inclusion of developmental anatomical changes characteristic of the pediatric spines has more of a predominant effect on biomechanical responses than extrapolating responses of the adult spine based on pure overall geometric scaling.  相似文献

Whiplash injury usually occurs in traffic accidents. Persons experienced this injury might have an impairment of proprioception clinically expressed as inability to determine the exact position of their heads. The aim of this study was to examine the loss of proprioception in people who had a whiplash injury. The study included 60 subjects with cervical spine injury, aged 20 to 50 years and 60 healthy volunteers matched by sex and age. The instrument used for cervical spine mobility assessment was the Cervical Measurement System (CMS), which determines the ability of subjects to return their head in the exact position as it was before they turned it 30 degrees left or right. Patients with cervical spine injury showed significant impairment of proprioception in comparison with healthy subjects (P < 0.001). The results support the hypothesis that subject with recent cervical spine injury have incorrect perception of their head position. Therefore, their rehabilitation should include the correction of proprioception and head coordination.  相似文献

与面颅、脑颅和颅底不同,枕骨与人群间遗传信息的关系不明确且研究较少。传统形态测量方法对枕骨的研究难以全面反映枕骨的形态信息。为更加精细地探究枕骨形态与人群的关系,本文以亚洲、非洲和欧洲地区的103例现生男性头骨为研究对象,通过三维几何形态测量和多元统计分析的方法对枕骨三维形态和异速生长模式在人群间的差异进行了研究。研究结果表明,枕骨的大小和形状在现生人群中具有显著差异,然而这种差异并不足以区分不同人群。现代人枕骨的三维形态具有较大的变异,主要表现在枕外隆凸点的突出程度、上下相对位置以及枕平面与项平面的比例,其次表现在星点位置在前后、内外以及上下方向上的变化,斜坡的倾角变化等方面。异速生长的分析表明,不同人群中存在不同的异速生长模式,但是非洲和欧洲人群也存在相似的趋势。本研究认为枕骨三维形态在反映人群间遗传关系上作用较小,支持枕骨形态可能更多受到功能和环境等因素的影响。  相似文献

Dendrites and dendritic spine density regress extensively during aging in rats housed under standard conditions (SC), which can be ameliorated by housing in the enriched environment (EE). This event is particularly pronounced on neurons where high rates of plasticity are conceivable, such as on projection neurons of archicortical regions of dentate gyrus'. However, effects of EE on neocortical projection neurons are still poorly understood. Therefore, we investigated the effect of EE housing on a deep layer III (L3) and layer V pyramidal cell (L5) morphology in the associative occipital neocortex of male Sprague-Dawley rats at 24 months of age. Rats were randomly distributed in two groups and reared under either SC (n=5) or EE conditions (n=6) for 26 days. In depth quantitative analysis of dendritic tree morphology and spine density on occipital projection neurons, from Golgi-Cox stained sections, showed similar trend in both EE occipital layers L3 and L5. Significant increase was found in total number of dendritic segments (L3 - 37.5 %, L5 - 33 %) and in dendritic diameter of intermediate segments (for more than 20 %), while increase in total spine number was around the level of significance (p>0.55; L3 - 30 %, L5 - 64 %). These findings suggest an outgrowth of new dendritic segments, When compared to archicortical region of dentate gyrus, effects of aging in the associative occipital cortex were less pronounced. Taken together, these findings suggest that structures being more affected by the aging process are more susceptible to the environmental enrichment in old age.  相似文献

Finite element (FE) modeling is an important tool for studying the cervical spine in normal, injured and diseased conditions. To understand the role of mechanical changes on the spine as it goes from a normal to a diseased or injured state, experimental studies are needed to establish the external response of young, normal cervical spinal segments compared to injured or degenerated cervical spinal segments under physiologic loading. It is important to differentiate injured or degenerated specimens from young, normal specimens to provide accurate experimental results necessary for the validation of FE models. This study used seven young, normal fresh adult cadaver cervical spine segments C2-T1 ranging in age from 20 to 51 years. Prior to testing, the spines were graded in three ways: specimen quality, facet degeneration and disc degeneration. Spine segments were tested in flexion/extension, and the range of loads applied to the specimens was 0.33, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 Nm. These loads resulted in rotations in the direction of loading as the primary response to loading. In general, results for young, normal specimens showed greater flexibility in flexion and less flexibility in extension than results previously reported in the literature. The flexion/extension curves are asymmetric with a greater magnitude in flexion than in extension. These experimental results will be used to validate FE models of young, normal cervical spines.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to examine the level of sexual dimorphism exhibited in the foramen magnum and occipital condyles of juveniles, and to test the utility of this sexual dimorphism for estimating sex. Using five basicranial measurements taken from 36 juveniles of known sex and age from the Lisbon documented collection (Portugal), we evaluated sexual dimorphism in the juvenile cranial base. Our application of a method previously applied solely to adults indicated that the basicranium is sexually dimorphic in juveniles, with larger foramen magnum and occipital condyle dimensions observed in males. Significant univariate differences between males and females were found for length and breadth of the foramen magnum, and breadth of the left occipital condyle. Using these measurements, multivariate discriminant analysis indicated that sex was correctly assigned 75.8% of time. Obtained accuracy, however, was lower than reported by previous studies of adult samples. We suggest that this discrepancy is a result of population variability rather than age. An interest in pursuing new theories of the underlying etiology of migraine headaches has been sparked by previously published reports of an association between amelioration of migraine headache symptoms and corrugator resection during endoscopic brow lift. This theory has further been reinforced by recent publications documenting improvement in migraine headaches following injection of botulinum A toxin. There are thought to be four major "trigger points" along the course of several peripheral nerves that may cause migraine headaches. Among these peripheral nerves is the greater occipital nerve. For this reason, the authors have undertaken an anatomic study of this nerve to determine its usual course, potential anatomic variations, and possible points of potential entrapment or compression. The results of this anatomic study have enhanced further development of techniques designed to address these points of entrapment/compression and potentially lead to relief of migraine headaches caused by this mechanism. Twenty cadaver heads from patients with an unknown history of migraine headaches were dissected to trace the normal course of the greater occipital nerve from the semispinalis muscle penetration to the superior nuchal line. Standardized measurements were performed on 14 specimens to determine the location of the emergence of the nerve using the midline and occipital protuberance as landmarks. On the basis of this information, the location of emergence was determined to be at a point centered approximately 3 cm below the occipital protuberance and 1.5 cm lateral to the midline. This location can, in turn, be used to guide the practitioner performing chemodenervation of the semispinalis capitis muscle in an attempt to provide migraine symptom relief.  相似文献

A new species of scorpionfish, Scorpaena brevispina , is described on the basis of a single specimen collected from off the east coast of Izu Peninsula, Pacific coast of Japan, at a depth of 45 m. Scorpaena brevispina is distinguished from other Indo–Pacific species of Scorpaena by the following combination of characters: pectoral-fin rays 17; longitudinal scale rows 44; scales below lateral line 13; gill rakers 17; anterior surface of preocular spine with three vertical or slightly oblique ridges; lateral surface of maxilla without a distinct longitudinal ridge; lateral lacrimal spine present; extremely deep occipital pit; occipital pit rectangular in dorsal view, length distinctly less than width (length 53·3% of width); numerous small papillae on surface of occipital pit; pectoral fin relatively long (33·3% of standard length, L S), posterior tip extending beyond verticals through last dorsal-fin spine base and second anal-fin spine base; relatively short third to fifth dorsal-fin spines (third spine length 14·6% of L S, fourth spine 15·5%, and fifth spine 15·8%, respectively).  相似文献

The degree of spheno‐occipital fusion has been used to assign a relative age to dentally mature hominoid cranial specimens. However, a recent study of captive individuals (Poe: Am J Phys Anthropol 144 (2011) 162–165) concluded that fusion of the spheno‐occipital suture in great ape taxa is of little utility for aging dentally mature individuals. In this contribution, I use dentally mature samples of extant hominoid taxa (Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus and Hylobates lar) to investigate a) the temporal relationship between spheno‐occipital fusion and dental maturity, b) whether there is an association between the degree of spheno‐occipital fusion and relative age, c) whether there are differences in relative timing of spheno‐occipital fusion between taxa, and d) whether there are sex differences in the relative timing of spheno‐occipital fusion. Results suggest that a) a substantial proportion of dentally mature wild‐shot chimpanzee, gorilla and orang‐utans have unfused or partially fused spheno‐occipital synchondoses, b) there is an association between the degree of spheno‐occipital fusion and age, c) there are interspecific differences in the timing of spheno‐occipital fusion, and d) there are significant sex differences in spheno‐occipital fusion in chimpanzees, orang‐utans and gibbons. Thus, contrary to previous work, degree of spheno‐occipital fusion is a potentially useful indicator of relative maturity, especially in great ape taxa. Specimens of a new genus and species of the stichaeid fish,Leptostichaeus pumilus, were collected from the Okhotsk Sea off Hokkaido in Japan. The present new genus and species clearly differs from all the other genera and species of the stichaeid fishes in the following characters: 3 or 4 pectoral fin rays; 10 or fewer caudal principal rays; 79–82 dorsal spines; no pelvic fin; last interneural spine supporting a single dorsal spine; infraorbital, occipital and lateral line canals absent; moderate size of dorsal spine shorter than eye diameter; membranes of dorsal and anal fins widely connected with caudal fin; a large black spot divided by a yellow band present just above gill cover.  相似文献

The spheno‐occipital synchondrosis is a craniofacial growth centre between the occipital and sphenoid bones—its ossification persists into adolescence, which for the skeletal biologist, means it has potential application for estimating subadult age. Based on previous research the timing of spheno‐occipital fusion is widely variable between and within populations, with reports of complete fusion in individuals as young as 11 years of age and nonfusion in adults. The aim of this study is, therefore, to examine this structure in a mixed sex sample of Western Australian individuals that developmentally span late childhood to adulthood. The objective is to develop statistically quantified age estimation standards based on scoring the degree of spheno‐occipital fusion. The sample comprises multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scans of 312 individuals (169 male; 143 female) between 5 and 25 years of age. Each MDCT scan is visualized in a standardized sagittal plane using three‐dimensional oblique multiplanar reformatting. Fusion status is scored according to a four‐stage system. Transition analysis is used to calculate age ranges for each defined stage and determine the mean age for transition between an unfused, fusing and fused status. The maximum likelihood estimates for the transition from open to fusing in the endocranial half is 14.44 years (male) and 11.42 years (female); transition from fusion in the ectocranial half to complete fusion is 16.16 years (male) and 13.62 years (female). This study affirms the potential value of assessing the degree of fusion in the spheno‐occipital synchondrosis as an indicator of skeletal age.
