A long-term record dating back to the 1960s indicates that Peridinium gatunense, an armored dinoflagellate, dominated the phytoplankton of Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee, Israel) until the mid-1990s, with a relatively stable spring bloom. However, since 1996, these blooms became irregular, failing to develop in 10 out of the past 16 years. During the later period, a significant correlation (R 2 = 0.605, P = 0.013) was found between annual peak P. gatunense biomass and riverine inflow volume. In-lake surveys showed that patches of high P. gatunense densities were associated with water enriched with fresher inflowing Jordan River water. Supplementing laboratory cultures of P. gatunense with Hula Valley water stimulated its growth relative to un-enriched controls. A likely explanation to the recent irregular blooms of this dinoflagellate is a hydrological modification that was made in the catchment in the mid-1990s, preventing Hula Valley water from reaching Lake Kinneret in most years—except for exceptionally wet years. We propose that until the mid-1990s, the Jordan River water enriched Lake Kinneret with a growth factor (a microelement and/or organic compound) originating in the Hula Valley, which in recent years has arrived in sufficient quantities to support a bloom only in high-rainfall years.  相似文献

1. Through analyses of a 34‐year record of phytoplankton, zooplankton and physicochemical parameters from Lake Kinneret, Israel, we show that distinct and persistent phytoplankton assemblage states occurred from winter to summer. 2. The most obvious characteristic of these states was the presence or absence of a spring bloom of the dinoflagellate, Peridinium gatunense. 3. Analyses of the data within the framework of the alternative states model revealed a possible complex triggering mechanism, and system hysteresis. 4. A change in zooplankton biomass and body size coincident with changes in predation pressure associated with the collapse of the Kinneret Bleak, Acanthobrama terraesanctae, fishery appeared to be the ‘slow changing’ variable in the context of the alternative states model. Alternative phytoplankton states were only possible after this variable crossed a threshold in 1993–94, following the collapse of the fishery. 5. When alternative states were possible, some physicochemical parameters and the structure of the zooplankton assemblage appeared to control which phytoplankton state emerged in a given year. In years without a P. gatunense bloom, important physicochemical parameters in winter included low NO3 loading, high water temperature, high water level, a deeper thermocline, low transparency, high concentrations of NO3 and Cl in the epilimnion, and low concentration of epilimnetic total phosphorus. In addition, the cladoceran Chydorus sphaericus and adults of the copepod Mesocyclops ogunnus were observed in winter in years without a bloom. 6. Zooplankton biomass and body size of some taxa have recovered since the 1993–94 collapse of the fishery, yet incidence of both phytoplankton states in Lake Kinneret was still possible. Within the framework of the alternative states model, this suggests that the slow changing variable threshold where alternative states became possible is different from the threshold where alternative states will no longer be possible. In other words, the system is characterised by a hysteresis.  相似文献

The aim of the study was a search for typical structure patterns of phytoplankton assemblages, based on the long-term dynamics analysis. As a test case we used the interannual phytoplankton variability of Lake Kinneret (Israel). The dominant phytoplankton species (Peridinium gatunense) structure was presented as the frequency-weighted taxonomic size spectrum (TSS) which describes the size distribution of the operational taxonomic unit (OTUj) occurrence frequencies. Using 24 years monitoring data, the TSS annual patterns of P. gatunense were compared. Typical persistent TSS patterns were evident even during years of pronounced deviations from the typical patterns of phytoplankton biomass dynamics and species composition. By correlation analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis and ANOVA the TSS variability was quantified and compared. While the TSS general shape was almost constant, its amplitude variations allowed us to distinguish between three levels of annual bloom intensity. Changes in phytoplankton community composition potentially affect the entire marine food web. Because of seasonal cycles and inter-annual variations in species composition, long-term monitoring, covering many sequential years, is required to establish a baseline study and to reveal long-term trends. The current study describes the phytoplankton biomass variations and species composition in relation to hydrographic and meteorological conditions in the Raunefjord, western Norway, over a 6-year period from 2001 to 2006. The extent of inflow or upwelling in the fjord varied from year to year and resulted in pronounced differences in water column stability. The annual phytoplankton community succession showed some repeated seasonal patterns, but also high variability between years. Two to four diatom blooms were observed per year, and the spring blooms occurring before water column stratification in March were dominated by Skeletonema marinoi and Chaetoceros socialis, and other Chaetoceros and Thalassiosira spp. Blooms of the haptophytes Phaeocystis pouchetii and Emiliania huxleyi were irregular and in some years totally absent. Although E. huxleyi was present all year round it appeared in bloom concentrations only in 2003, when the summer was warm and the water column characterized by high surface temperatures and pronounced stratification. The annual average abundance of both diatoms and flagellates increased during the six years. Despite the high variation from year to year, our investigation provides valuable knowledge about annual phytoplankton community patterns in the region, and can be used as a reference to detect possible future changes.  相似文献

The intracellular concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and chlorophyll a of phytoplankton and zooplankton in Lake Kinneret were determined from 1969 to 1973. The ratios C:P, C:N, chlorophyll a:P, chlorophyll a:N of the algae showed fluctuations which could be related to the nutrient conditions that influence the annual pattern of phytoplankton development, especially in respect to the dinoflagellate bloom of Peridinium cinctum (OFM) Ehr. f. westii (Lemm.) Lef. Relatively high intracellurar P values at the start of the bloom indicated adequate availability of this nutrient and luxury consumption over a short period of time. Later, Peridinium continued to grow despite unusually high C:P ratios (> 300:1). In most years, phosphorus may have eventually limited growth, however, in 1970, the bloom censed despite comparatively high intracellular P concentrations. These observations, together with supplementary evidence from nutrient addition experiments and determinations of specific alkaline phosphatase levels, indicated that, for most of the growth phase of the bloom, Peridinium cells were not directly limited by P. The decline of the bloom usually, but not always (e.g., in 1970), was marked by very high C:P ratios. Thus, a shortage of P may often be a contributory factor to the cessation of the Peridinium bloom and may be limiting phytoplankton growth in the fall. Over the years 1969–73, possibly due to an overall drop in salinity, there appears to be a trend to lower levels of biologically bound phosphorus in Lake Kinneret, without a concomitant decrease in carbon biomass.  相似文献

The phytoplankton community of a eutrophic reservoir   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The dynamics of the phytoplankton community of a eutrophic reservoir are described for a two year period. Fifty-eight species were recorded, 25 of them common. Bacillariophyta dominated during the winter and early spring and Chlorophyta during late spring, to be replaced by a bloom of Cyanophyta. The mean and peak biomass of phytoplankton was 8.6 mg 1–1 and 40.8 mg 1–1 in 1981, and 8.3 mg 1–1 and 37.6 mg 1–1 in 1982. Temperature accounted for 67.3% and pH for 8% of the variation in total phytoplankton biomass over the two year period, using a multiple regression technique. Both horizontal and vertical patchiness, measured as an index of mean crowding, were recorded in the reservoir. Horizontal aggregations were associated with spring blooms of Chlorophyta and summer blooms of Cyanophyta, while vertical aggregations were most marked during the summer bloom of Cyanophyta. Concentrations of phytoplankton were influenced by wind, the prevailing southwesterly wind accumulating algae in the northeasterly arm of the reservoir during much of the year.  相似文献

1. Lake Kinneret is a warm (13–30°C) monomictic lake. Between January and June a heavy annual bloom of the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense dominates phytoplankton biomass (250 g m?2). At the beginning of the summer, degradation and decomposition of the Peridinium biomass occurs, serving as a trigger for intense sulphate reduction in the hypolimnion and sediments. 2. The rates of sulphate reduction in the sediments varied seasonally from 12 to 1700 nmol SO4.?2 reduced cm?3 day?1 in December and July, respectively. The availability of organic matter and sulphate is high in June after the crash of the Peridinium bloom and the beginning of stratification and is lowest in December before overturn. 3. Sulphate concentrations in the hypolimnion range between 0.52 mM and 0.20 mM during mixing (January-April) and before overturn (December), respectively. The depletion in sulphate in the hypolimnion is stoichiometrically correlated to the increase in sulphide. The lake is not depleted of sulphate at any time, so the sulphate reduction process in Lake Kinneret is not limited by sulphate concentrations except in the sediments just before overturn.  相似文献

We combined a mass balance approach with measurements of air–water and sediment–water nitrogen (N) exchange to better understand the mechanisms attenuating N throughputs in a eutrophic coastal lagoon. We were particularly interested in how seasonal shifts in external versus internal N fluxes and the transition from diatom- to cyanobacteria- dominated phytoplankton communities influence N storage and loss to the atmosphere. We found that on an annual basis almost all of the N removed by the lagoon was due to sediment storage following the spring diatom bloom. This period was characterized by high riverine inputs of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, high rates of assimilatory conversion to particulate nitrogen (PN), and net accrual of N in sediments. By contrast, the larger summer bloom was associated with low sediment N storage, which we attribute in part to the presence of positively-buoyant cyanobacteria. Low settling rates during cyanobacteria blooms favored export of PN to the Baltic Sea over sediment accrual in the lagoon. In addition, summer dinitrogen (N2) fixation by cyanobacteria largely offset annual N2 losses via denitrification. These findings show that cyanobacteria blooms diminish N attenuation within the lagoon by altering the balance of N exchange with the atmosphere and by promoting export of particulate N over sediment burial.  相似文献

We studied the seasonal variation in concentrations of nutrients and phytoplankton in Lake Yogo for 2 years, from May 2000 to May 2002, in order to clarify the seasonal succession of phytoplankton and the effect of various manipulations on it. It was revealed that in spite of the installation of aeration systems and the pumping of mesotrophic water from Lake Biwa during the summer season, the trophic state of Lake Yogo overall has not improved during the past few decades. However, the pumping of water from Lake Biwa did affect the concentrations of nutrients and the periods of cyanobacterial bloom during the summer. The pumping period was different in each year, and the cyanobacterial bloom occurred during the period without pumping in both years. The aeration destratification was not strong enough to prevent cyanobacterial blooms. Cyanobacteria and Bacillariophyceae contributed most to the phytoplankton biomass in both years. Aphanizomenon, Anabaena, and Microcystis were the main genera among cyanobacteria. The bloom of Aphanizomenon or Anabaena occurred early in the summer, and was then replaced by Microcystis. Aphanizomenon was almost always present, and often formed bloom even in winter. The seasonal succession of Bacillariophyceae was almost the same in both years and was well categorized: winter-growing species such as Aulacoseira pusilla (F. Meister) Tuji et Houki and species of Thalassiosiraceae, spring-growing species such as Asterionella formosa Hassall, Fragilaria crotonensis Kitton, and Synedra cf. acus, and fall-growing species such as Aulacoseira ambigua (Grunow) Simonsen, and Aulacoseira granulata (Ehrenb.) Simonsen.  相似文献

Blooms of the cyanobacteria Nodularia spumigena and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae dominated the phytoplankton assemblages of the western Gulf of Finland and the eastern side of the northern Baltic Sea in late July–August, 1992. The bloom overlapped the peak seasonal contributions of the dominant mesozooplankton herbivores in the region, the copepods Acartia bifilosa and Eurytemora affinis and the cladoceran Bosmina longispina maritima. Using radio-labelling techniques; the copepods were offered one of the cyanobacteria, Nodularia, as well as the 10–54 µm fraction of the natural phytoplankton assemblage. In general, incorporation rates of the labelled phytoplankton into the copepods declined with increasing contributions of the cyanobacteria. For both copepods, incorporation was inversely related to total phytoplankton biomass, whether measured as chlorophyll, total cells or cyanobacteria biomass. The very low rates for Acartia (< 0.8 µl [copepod h]–1) indicated that this copepod was likely starving in the cyanobacteria bloom, consistent with the generally poor condition of the animal observed in the laboratory. The other major mesozooplanktor, B. longispina maritima, ingested substantially more cyanobacterial biomass than the two copepods, based on HPLC-identified cyanobacteria-specific pigment echinenone in the gut. Bloom carbon provided < 1% and < 4% of the daily rations for Acartia and Eurytemora, respectively. Total copepod demand in the cyanobacteria blooms was trivial, < 1% of bloom biomass consumed daily. These results suggest that copepod herbivory is relatively unimportant in dissipating summer cyanobacteria blooms in the Gulf of Finland.  相似文献

Subsurface phytoplankton blooms fuel pelagic production in the North Sea   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The seasonal phytoplankton biomass distribution pattern in stratifiedtemperate marine waters is traditionally depicted as consistingof spring and autumn blooms. The energy source supporting pelagicsummer production is believed to be the spring bloom. However, the spring bloom disappears relatively quickly from the watercolumn and a large proportion of the material sedimenting tothe bottom following the spring bloom is often comprised ofintact phytoplankton cells. Thus, it is easy to argue that thespring bloom is fueling the energy demands of the benthos, butmore difficult to argue convincingly that energy fixed duringthe spring bloom is fueling the pelagic production occurringduring summer months. We argue here that periodic phytoplanktonblooms are occurring during the summer in the North Sea at depthsof >25 m and that the accumulated new production [sensu (Dugdaleand Goering, Limnol. Oceanogr., 12, 196–206, 1967)] occurringin these blooms may be greater than that occurring in the springbloom in the same regions. Thus, such blooms may explain apparentdiscrepancies in production yields between different temperatemarine systems.  相似文献

The effects of oils and oil components on algae: A review   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Plate structure analysis of the bloom-forming Peridinium of Lake Kinneret (previously identified as P. cinctum fa. westii) established its identity as P. gatunense. Peridinium cinctum was not observed. Material from different years and periods of the bloom, as well as specimens from cultures and P. gatunense from Lago Cristalino (Brazil), were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Peridinium gatunense from Lake Kinneret showed slight differences of the plate pattern as compared with specimens from other localities.  相似文献

1. Linking a regional climate model (RCM) configured for contemporary atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, with a phytoplankton community model (PROTECH) produced realistic simulations of 20 years of recent phytoplankton data from Bassenthwaite Lake, in the North‐West of England. 2. Meteorological drivers were derived from the RCM to represent a future climate scenario involving a 1% per annum compound increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations until 2100. Using these drivers, PROTECH was run for another 20 year period representing the last two decades of the 21st century. 3. Comparison of these present and future simulations revealed likely impacts on the current seasonal phytoplankton development. Under future climate conditions, the simulated spring bloom showed an increase in cyanobacteria dominance caused by greater success of Planktothrix. Also, the summer cyanobacteria bloom declined earlier because of nutrient limitation caused by the increased spring growth. Overall productivity in the lake did not change. 4. Analysis showed that these predicted changes were driven by changes in water temperature, which were in turn triggered by the higher air temperatures predicted by the RCM.  相似文献

The phytoplankton of Lake Kinneret, a warm monomictic lake,is dominated by a Pyrrhophyta-Chlorophyta assemblage. Four stagesof succession of planktonic algae occur in the lake, startingwith thermal and chemical destratification and ending with stratification. The index of diversity of the phytoplankton communities is highduring the destratification and mixed periods. The index reachesminimal values during late summer, when the ecosystem is subjectto strong physical, chemical and biological stresses. The diversityin Lake Kinneret increases with the increase in nutrients andnot with the increase in temperature. During most of the year, the nanoplanktonic forms are in greaternumbers than the netplankton species. This fact is correlatedwith the amounts of available nutrients in the lake. The annual averages of the wet autotrophic biomass in Lake Kinneretare very high in comparison with other warm lakes. The contributionof the nanoplanktonic species to the total algal biomass isvery small during the Peridinium bloom, but represents approximatelyhalf of the total algal biomass during the rest of the year. The concentration of nutrients in the water, together with theadverse competitive effect of Peridinium on other algae, areto a large extent responsible for the composition, successionand abundance of the phytoplankton assemblages in Lake Kinneret.  相似文献

Freshwater lakes are biologically sensitive to changes in the surrounding environment and the impacts that such changes have on their water quality are of considerable ecological, recreational and economic importance. In this study the phytoplankton community model, PROTECH, was used to experiment with the effects of elevated temperatures and increased nutrient load on phytoplankton succession and productivity. The response of a phytoplankton community to combined incremental changes in these drivers was analysed, in order to elucidate the resulting ecological changes. Annual mean phytoplankton biomass increased with increases in temperature and nutrient loading, although the latter had the larger effect. The phenology of the dominant phytoplankton taxa changed with increasing water temperature; the three spring blooming species all peaked earlier in the year. The simulated summer bloom of Anabaena became earlier in the year and the Chlorella bloom later. The increased phytoplankton biomass was largely dominated by the cyanobacterium Anabaena, which was especially prevalent during the summer bloom. This resulted in a progressive loss of phytoplankton biodiversity with increasing water temperature and nutrient supply. Model experimentation showed that whilst both factors greatly affected the community, the changes to nutrient loading generally had the greater effect and that at low nutrient levels the effect of water temperature change was reduced considerably. Finally, the model predicted that cyanobacteria have the potential to dominate the phytoplankton community, with clear consequences for water quality, and that this dominance was at its greatest when high water temperatures were combined with high nutrient loads.  相似文献

The seasonal cycle of phytoplankton biomass in the CantabrianSea (Bay of Biscay) is characterized by peaks produced duringthe spring blooms, as in most temperate seas. Although stratificationand light intensity variabilities were high throughout the year, only a small range of low water-column stability and light intensitywas associated with the biomass maximum. Out of this range, accumulations of biomass would be limited primarily by highturbulence and low light intensities in winter, and low nutrientconcentrations, sedimentation and grazing in summer. Associatedwith these periods six seasonal stages have been identifiedusing particle size distributions (PSD). These stages correspondedto three different spring types, and summer, fall and wintertypes. Most of the variability of the PSD was associated withthe maximum of biomass during the spring blooms. During theseblooms the distributions were dominated either by small, largeor by several sizes of particles. In summer the PSD were polymodal, while in winter the biomass was uniformly distributed withinthe considered particle size range. The transition between PSD types was paralleled by similar changesin phytoplankton species composition. The seasonal cycle ofphytoplankton species abundance was characterized by the alternanceof diatoms in water-mixing periods and dinoflagellates in stratificationperiods. However, microflagellates were abundant in diverseconditions throughout the year. As a result of microflagellateabundance and the formation of cell chains and aggregates, particlesize composition during the bloom period resulted largely unpredictableusing water-column stability data.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variation in phytoplankton community structure within a large flood-control reservoir (Sardis Reservoir, MS, USA) was investigated in relation to variation in physicochemical properties, location within the reservoir, hydraulic residence time (HRT), nutrient concentrations, temperature, and light conditions over a 14-month period. During periods of short HRT, phytoplankton communities throughout the reservoir were homogeneous in biomass, composition, and production. With a gradual increase in HRT from spring to summer, spatially heterogeneous phytoplankton communities developed along the longitudinal axis of the reservoir. During this period of longer HRT, diatoms and chlorophytes were a larger proportion of total phytoplankton biomass at shallow and more turbid locations near the head of the reservoir, whereas cyanobacteria were a larger proportion of the community at deeper and less turbid locations closer to the outflow. Seasonal succession of the phytoplankton community was represented by high abundance of diatoms in spring, increasing biomass of cyanobacteria through summer, and a secondary bloom of diatoms in fall. Species of Cyclotella, Asterionella, Nitzschia, and Ankistrodesmus were among the first colonizers in the early growing season, closely followed by Aulacoseira, whereas species of Staurastrum and Tetraedron appeared later in the spring. Species of Synedra, Crucigenia, Selenastrum, Scenedesmus, and Merismopedia occurred throughout the sampling period. As the diatoms started to decrease during mid-spring, cryptophytes increased, prior to dominance of species of Pseudanabaena in summer. Reservoir management of HRT, in combination with spatial variation in reservoir morphology and seasonal variation in temperature and riverine nutrient inputs, creates seasonally variable yet distinct spatial patterns in phytoplankton community biomass, composition, and production. Rapid economic development in China’s Lake Taihu basin during the past four decades has accelerated nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loadings to the lake. This has caused a shift from mesotrophic to hypertrophic conditions, symptomized by harmful cyanobacterial blooms (CyanoHABs). The relationships between phytoplankton biomass as chlorophyll a (Chla) and nutrients as total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were analyzed using historical data from 1992 to 2012 to link the response of CyanoHAB potential to long-term nutrient changes. Over the twenty year study period, annual mean Chla showed significantly positive correlations with both annual mean TN and TP (P < 0.001), reflecting a strong phytoplankton biomass response to changes in nutrient inputs to the lake. However, phytoplankton biomass responded slowly to annual changes in TN after 2002. There was not a well-defined or significant relationship between spring TN and summertime Chla. The loss of a significant fraction of spring N loading due to denitrification likely weakened this relationship. Bioavailability of both N and P during the summer plays a key role in sustaining cyanobacterial blooms. The frequency of occurrence of bloom level Chla (>20 μg L?1) was compared to TN and TP to determine nutrient-bloom thresholds. A decline in bloom risk is expected if TN remains below 1.0 mg L?1 and TP below 0.08 mg L?1.  相似文献
