In comparison with other bathydraconids, all species of the genus Bathydraco are poorly known from an ecological perspective. The diet of juvenile Bathydraco marri Norman, 1938 was studied for the first time in specimens collected in the southwestern Ross Sea during summer 1998. Fish were collected in a single otter trawl catch at 330–340 m depth. The stomach content analysis showed that this species fed exclusively on crustaceans. Overall, 20 prey taxa were identified to genus or species level. Mysids, amphipods and copepods were the most important prey in decreasing order of importance. Other prey, such as Euphausia superba, isopods and tanaids were eaten occasionally and in very small amounts. A multivariate analysis was applied to feeding data to assess ontogenetic or sex-related changes in diet. No difference was detected between sexes, whereas diet of small and large fish differed in some degree. An ontogenetic shift from small and pelagic crustaceans such as copepods to benthic–benthopelagic prey such as amphipods and mysids was observed. Relating present results with published data on physiological characteristics of B. marri, it was possible to infer their feeding behaviour and mode of life. Like other bathydraconids, this species appeared to be an inactive and sluggish fish, which relied on more or less motile benthic or epibenthic prey adopting a “sit and wait” feeding strategy. On the other hand, smaller fish seem to be more active, feeding also on pelagic prey such as copepods that can be seasonally abundant, thus reducing the intraspecific competition for food.  相似文献

The predator-prey relationship was investigated between the landlocked dwarf ayu (koayu; Plecoglossus altivelis) and three planktonic crustaceans, Daphnia galeata, Eodiaptomus japonicus, and Mesocyclops dissimilis, in Lake Biwa. The abundance of each prey species and daphniid size composition in the lake was compared with those in the stomachs of koayu collected at the same time and place. D. galeata was the main item of diet of koayu in spite of their low density, and the larger individuals were selectively preyed upon by the predator. In the stepwise multiple regression of the mean number of each prey species in the stomachs on prey densities in the lake and predator mass, the density of the prey itself was always selected as the predictor variable. The density of E. japonicus was also selected as the regressor of daphniid number in the stomachs with a negative slope. Multiple regression was also performed each for two size-classes of D. galeata, and a negative effect of large daphniids was detected for the consumption of small ones. The present results and additional information enable estimation of the collective predation rate by the koayu population on the prey populations.  相似文献

Prey exploitation was documented for Hippoglossoides platessoides, Pleuronectes ferrugineus , and P. americanus collected from southeast Sable Island Bank in February and June 1989. Diets varied significantly by sample and with fish species and length. Of 239 species consumed by flatfishes, 66 were determined to be principal prey. Crustaceans, particularly amphipods, were the most frequently exploited prey of all three flatfish species. Small H. platessoides fed on suprabenthic fauna, while larger fish exploited epifauna and hyperiid suprafauna. P. ferrugineus exploited epibenthic fauna, consuming crustaceans and tunicates when small and polychaetes when larger. P. americanus preyed on epifauna; smaller fish exploited polychaetes while larger fish usually consumed crustaceans associated with ectoproct colonies. Feeding intensity was dramatically lower in February, food being found in stomachs of only 36% of H. platessoides and 49% of P. ferrugineus , and lacking in the stomachs of P. americanus . In June, stomachs of 86% of H. platessoides , 94% of P. ferrugineus and 96% of P. americanus contained food. Results indicate that prey resources for the three flatfish species are partitioned by specific habitat and prey type preferences.  相似文献

Diet investigations were carried out on 0-, 1- and 2-year-old Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua) sampled in the Barents Sea during 1984–2002. Stomach-content analyses showed that the 0 and 1 group cod fed mainly on crustaceans, with krill and amphipods composing up to 70% of their diet. Krill (Thysanoessa spp. and Meganyctiphanes norvegica) and amphipods (Themisto spp.) were mainly found in cod stomachs sampled in the central and close to the Polar Front region in the Barents Sea where these prey organisms are reported to be abundant in summer. A shift in the main diet from crustaceans to fish was observed from age 1 to age 2. The diet of 2-year-old cod mainly comprised capelin (Mallotus villosus) and other fish, and to a lesser degree, krill and amphipods. Shrimp (mainly Pandalus spp.) was also an important prey in both age 1 and 2 cod. A statistically significant positive relationship was obtained between capelin stock size and the amount of capelin in the diet of 2-year-old cod. Results from this study also show that the larger age-2 cod preyed more on capelin in winter and that larger cod (>22 cm) prefer larger capelin (>12 cm). During periods of low capelin abundance, the 2-year-old cod shift their diet more to crustaceans, such as krill and amphipods. A positive significant relationship was also obtained between Total Fullness Index (TFI) and the amount of capelin in the diet and between TFI and the growth of 2-year-old cod, indicating that the growth of age-2 cod is to a large extent dependent on the amount of capelin consumed. The diet of juvenile chinook salmon and the foods available to them were studied during spring and summer in a large, braided, New Zealand river. During both sampling periods fish and potential prey were collected at dawn and dusk. Analysis showed that in spring the feeding rate increased at dawn, when aquatic taxa comprised the majority of their prey. Prey of terrestrial origin dominated the diet at dusk in summer but formed only about 1% of the diet during spring, when few such prey were available.
During spring the fish selectively preyed upon larger nymphs of the mayflies Deleatidium spp. However, in summer chironomids, other dipterans, and trichopterans were consumed to the exclusion of Deleatidium . Most of the chironomids and trichopterans taken were pupae or emerging adults and it is suggested that this may reflect differences in vulnerability during the diurnal emergence period.  相似文献

We carried out dietary analysis on five numerically abundant fishes, Sillago japonica, Ditremma temmincki, Tridentiger trigonocephalus, Hippocampus japonicus and Petroscirtes breviceps in an eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay, Korea. Comparisons between species demonstrated that the dietary composition of each fish species was significantly different from that of every other species. Although gammarid amphipods and caprellid amphipods were consumed by all species, their individual contributions to each species' diet varied. Furthermore, polychaetes contributed to the diets of S. japonica and T. trigonocephalusand crab larvae were consumed byD. temmincki. Algae and eelgrass were not consumed by four fish species and made only a minimal contribution to the diet of P. breviceps. The diet of each fish species except H. japonicus underwent size-related changes; smaller fishes consumed gammarid amphipods, mysids and copepods, while larger fishes ate polychaetes, gastropods, isopods and other fishes. Differences in the prey organisms consumed of each individual species could be often related to differences in mouth length and width. S. japonica, D. temmincki, T. trigonocephalus, and P. breviceps underwent also a significant diel changes that could be related to differences in foraging behavior and/or prey availability. Thus, use of vision to detect prey would account for the greater daytime consumption of copepods by S. japonica and of crab larvae by D. temmincki, whereas the nocturnal emergence of gammarid amphipods, polychaetes and isopods from the substrate explained their greater consumption by S. japonica, D. temmincki, T. trigonocephalusand P. breviceps at night. The feeding habits of Okamejei kenojei were studied using 592 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Taean, Korea from April 2008 to March 2009. O. kenojei is a bottom‐feeding carnivore that consumes mainly shrimp, fishes, and crabs. Its diet also includes small quantities of amphipods, mysids, cephalopods, euphausiids, copepods, isopods, and polychaetes. The total length (TL) of individuals in this study ranged from 8.2 to 49.0 cm. Cluster analysis based on %IRI (index of relative importance) identified three size classes. Group A (< 20 cm TL) ate primarily caridean shrimp and amphipods; group B (20–30 cm TL) ate exclusively shrimp; and group C (> 30 cm TL) ate penaeoidean shrimp, fishes, and crabs. O. kenojei showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Although shrimps were the primary food consumed by all size groups, the proportion of shrimp in the total diet decreased and the consumption of fishes and crabs gradually increased with the body size of O. kenojei. Size of the prey organisms also increased. Smaller individuals fed mainly on small prey, such as amphipods, mysids, and small shrimp, whereas larger individuals preferred larger prey, such as larger shrimp, fishes, and crabs. The size‐related diet breadth and the percentage of empty stomachs were significant; the diet breadth gradually increased with body size, whereas the percentage of empty stomachs decreased. Seasonal changes in the O. kenojei diet were not significant, but shrimp constituted 97.3% of the summer diet by %IRI. Seasonal changes in diet breadth and the percentage of empty stomachs were not significant.  相似文献

Recent decline in the lesser scaup Aythya affinis population has been linked to changes in wetland conditions along their spring migration routes. In particular, the use of amphipod prey by lesser scaup has declined in many regions of the upper Midwest U.S.A. and has been linked to expanded fisheries, although empirical data on diet overlap are lacking. To explore patterns of prey use by lesser scaup and diet overlap with fishes, we quantified diets of scaup and fishes during the 2003 and 2004 spring migration in eastern South Dakota, U.S.A. We compared diet overlap between lesser scaup and fishes collected from Twin Lakes, South Dakota—an important stopover location for spring-migrating scaup. Plant seeds occurred in >95% of lesser scaup diets (n = 118) and represented an appreciable amount of consumed biomass (>70%). Gastropods, amphipods, and chironomids were the most abundant invertebrate prey taxa and occurred in 29–34% of lesser scaup diets. Although relatively frequent, these taxa each contributed only 4–27% of the diet by weight. Percent dry mass of amphipods, a preferred prey by lesser scaup, was low (4%) indicating that amphipod availability may be reduced during spring migration. Analysis of fish diets showed that black bullhead Ameiurus melas and yellow perch Perca flavescens had the highest diet overlap with lesser scaup at 94% and 92%, respectively. Moreover, mean size of amphipods and chironomids found in fish diets were significantly larger than that consumed by lesser scaup. Our findings support the notion that amphipod use by spring-migrating lesser scaup has declined and that size-selective predation by fishes may influence prey availability for lesser scaup. The dietary composition of juvenile Trematomus newnesi, trawled at Potter Cove, South Shetland Islands, in the summers 2004–2005 and 2005–2006 was analysed using frequency of occurrence (F%) and dietary coefficient Q (%) methods. The samples consisted exclusively of immature specimens in the range 4–15.4 cm (total length) and are complementary to those of larger fish from the same site, including adults, which were analysed in previous work. Benthic-demersal organisms such as gammaridean amphipods and harpacticoid copepods were the main (coefficient Q) and most frequent (F%) prey. The importance of the smaller and larger main prey diminished and increased, respectively, during ontogeny. Pelagic krill, being negligible in the diet of the small and medium size fish categories, became secondary food, but only for fish larger than 12 cm. Other taxonomic groups occurred scarcely and constituted occasional food. They were mostly benthic, such as gastropods, bivalves, isopods, cumaceans, and algae, with the exception of an insignificant number of pelagic ostracods and calanoid copepods. Unlike the more pelagic/planktivorous mode of life known for late juvenile-adult stages of T. newnesi, including cryopelagy, present results indicate that early juvenile fish remain sheltered among macroalgae beds preying on the associated community of demersal-benthic organisms.  相似文献

Many of the most abundant small and juvenile fishes within shallow water estuarine nursery habitats consume other fish to some degree but have rarely been considered as potentially important predators in the functioning of these systems because of the low (<50%) average occurrence of fish in their diets. Predation by abundant minor piscivores on new recruits when they first enter the nursery may make a significant contribution to the predation mortality of this critical life-history stage. To determine the potential importance of minor piscivores as predators on new recruits, temporal patterns in the diets of 15 common species of minor piscivores were examined and related to the abundance of new recruits (≤20 mm FL) in biweekly seine samples over 13 months in shallow (<1.5 m) sandy habitats in the Ross River estuary in north-eastern Queensland, Australia. The high spatial patchiness of new recruits made it difficult to correlate their abundance with their consumption by minor piscivores, and there was no relationship detected between the abundance of new recruits and the occurrence of fish in the diets of minor piscivores. To gain broader insight into spatio-temporal patterns in the consumption of fish prey by minor piscivores, we utilised a collection of fishes sampled during various studies over 6 years from 17 estuaries in the region to examine the diets of >3500 individuals from 20 spp. of minor piscivores. Patterns in the consumption of fish prey by these minor piscivores, especially the highly abundant sparids, sillaginids and ambassids, revealed that the low average occurrence of fish in their diet greatly underestimated the predation pressure imposed by these on fish prey at particular locations and times. For most sampling occasions and locations few minor piscivores consumed fish prey (consumed by 0% of individuals examined), while occasionally a large proportion of individuals within a taxon did so (50–100% of individuals consumed fish prey). Often at such times/locations multiple species of minor piscivores simultaneously preyed heavily on fish. When minor piscivores consumed fish, they preyed mainly on small new recruits. Because many of these minor piscivores are relatively recent recruits, many of the small and juvenile fishes believed to gain refuge in shallow estuarine nurseries may themselves be important predators on fish subsequently recruiting to these habitats, and so potentially play a significant role in structuring estuarine fish faunas and the functioning of shallow water nurseries.  相似文献

The diet compositions of greater weever, Trachinus draco, from the eastern‐central Adriatic Sea, were investigated with respect to seasons, fish size and sampling locations. Analyzed were the stomach contents of 592 specimens, total length (TL) of 9.9–31.2 cm, collected by commercial bottom trawls from January to December 2008. The frequency of empty stomachs varied significantly with the season (43.3% maximum during winter; 6.8% minimum during summer). Prey items identified in the stomachs belonged to seven major taxonomic groups: Bivalvia, Cephalopoda, Decapoda, Mysidacea, Isopoda, Amphipoda and Teleostei. Decapods were the most important prey (%IRI = 72.8) followed by teleosts (%IRI = 16.4) and mysids (%IRI = 15.0); other prey groups were only occasionally ingested. Diet composition showed little seasonal variation; decapods were the most important prey in all seasons. Fish size was the most important factor influencing the composition of the diet. Small individuals (<15 cm TL) fed primarily on small crustaceans (mysids), whereas larger fish consumed bigger prey, such as decapods, teleosts and cephalopods. There was high dietary similarity between sampling locations. Based on the diet, greater weever can be a considered a generalistic predator.  相似文献

Pelagic North Sea whiting Merlangius merlangus preyed upon (pelagic) sprat and sandeel, while demersal whiting preyed upon (demersal) Norway pout and herring. Values of diet breadth were low for both feeding groups using Levin's index. Diet overlaps within layers were low ( D <0·25), while the between layer food overlap was moderate ( D =0·25–0·74) to high ( D >0·74) using Schoener's index. Selection of prey was density dependent. However, prey size also played an important role. The diet of whiting shifted from amphipods and mysids to fish with increasing predator length, and the length of prey consumed increased significantly with length of whiting. The fact that the stomach contents differed between the feeding groups demonstrates the need for a sampling design that includes both pelagic and demersal habitats when trying to quantify the diet of whiting.  相似文献

To clarify the feeding habits of reed fishes, the gut contents of 13 fish species collected in a Phragmites australis belt in Lake Shinji were examined. Six species showed ontogenetic and/or seasonal changes in food use patterns. Smaller individuals generally preyed on small planktonic items (e.g., calanoid and cyclopoid copepods) or small crustaceans (gammaridean amphipods), subsequently changing to other prey items (e.g., mysids and filamentous algae) with growth. The most important dietary items for the reed fish assemblage comprised planktonic copepods, gammaridean amphipods and mysids. However, the relative importance of these changed seasonally, gammaridean amphipods being the most important in autumn and winter, and planktonic copepods and mysids the most important in spring and in summer. Cluster analysis based on dietary overlaps showed that the reed fish assemblage comprised five feeding guilds (planktonic-copepod, mysid, gammaridean-amphipod, filamentous-algae, and detritus feeders). Of these, the three former guilds were the most abundantly represented, whereas detritivores were represented by a single species.  相似文献

The diet of Harpagifer antarcticus was studied at two localities of the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. The analysis of the stomach contents of specimens collected in tide pools at Potter Cove, King George Island, indicated that gammarid amphipods (mainly Gondogeneia sp.) were the main prey of this fish, followed by polychaetes, gastropods and isopods. By contrast, the specimens from Harmony Point, Nelson Island, which were recovered from stomach contents of Antarctic shags Phalacrocorax bransfieldensis feeding at depths of 46–110 m, preyed almost exclusively on the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba. Recent theoretical work suggests that predator impact on local prey density will be the result of interactions between prey emigration responses to predators and predator consumption of prey. Whether prey increase or decrease their movement rates in response to predators will greatly influence the impact that predators have on prey density. In stream systems the type of predator, benthic versus water-column, is expected to influence whether prey increase or decrease their movement rates. Experiments were conducted to examine the response of amphipods (Gammarus minus) to benthic and water-column predators and to examine the interplay between amphipod response to predators and predator consumption of prey in determining prey density. Amphipods did not respond to nor were they consumed by the benthic predator. Thus, this predator had no impact on amphipod density. In contrast, amphipods did respond to two species of water-column predators (the predatory fish bluegills, Lepomis macrochirus, and striped shiners, Luxilus chrysocephalus) by decreasing their activity rates. This response led to similar positive effects on amphipod density at night by both species of predatory fish. However, striped shiners did not consume many amphipods, suggesting their impact on the whole amphipod “population” was zero. In contrast, bluegills consumed a significant number of amphipods, and thus had a negative impact on the amphipod “population”. These results lend support to theoretical work which suggests that prey behavioral responses to predators can mask the true impact that predators have on prey populations when experiments are conducted at small scales. A total of 1145 stomachs from Atlantic salmon caught over the shelf off Helgeland/Trøndelag, and in the oceanic waters off Andenes, northern Norway during late winter–spring, 1969–1972 were examined. Food was found in 52.9% of the stomachs examined. The most important food items found in fish caught in the Helgeland/Trøndelag area were euphausids and hyperid amphipods while the myctophid Benthosema glaciale , the squid Gonatus fabricil and euphausids were found most frequently in the salmon caught off Andenes. Most salmon had preyed upon only one species, and few stomachs contained three or more prey species. The type of food did not appear to be related to the length of the fish. It is suggested that some mesopelagic feeding occurred.  相似文献

The diet of the red fox Vulpes vulpes was investigated in five regions of northeastern Poland by stomach content analysis of 224 foxes collected from hunters. The red fox is expected to show the opportunistic feeding habits. Our study showed that foxes preyed mainly on wild prey, with strong domination of Microtus rodents, regardless of sex, age, month and habitat. Voles Microtus spp. were found in 73% of stomachs and constituted 47% of food volume consumed. Other food items were ungulate carrion (27% of volume), other mammals (11%), birds (9%), and plant material (4%). Sex- and age-specific differences in dietary diversity were found. Adult males and juvenile foxes had larger food niche breadths than adult females and their diets highly overlapped. Proportion of Microtus voles increased from autumn to late winter. Significant habitat differences between studied regions were found. There was a tendency among foxes to decrease consumption of voles with increasing percentage of forest cover. Based on our findings, red foxes in northeastern Poland can be recognized as a generalist predators, consuming easily accessible and abundant prey. However, high percentage of voles consumed regardless of age, sex, month, or habitats may indicate red fox specialization in preying on Microtus rodents.  相似文献

We investigated current diets of the six most abundant benthic fish in the northern Bering Sea. Our objective was to explore feeding strategies and potential competition with other top predators as ecosystem changes occur in the northern Bering Sea ecosystem. Our approach used stomach content data collected from field sampling during spring 2006 and 2007. Calanoid copepods and ampeliscid amphipods were important prey of Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) but in different proportions depending upon fish size, feeding location, and local environmental conditions. Snailfish (Liparidae) occupied a broad niche and fed on a variety of benthic amphipods. Arctic alligatorfish (Ulcina olrikii) and Arctic staghorn sculpin (Gymnocanthus tricuspis) consumed ampeliscid amphipods predominantly. Shorthorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus scorpius) had a less-diverse diet, with snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) most important by weight. Finally, all Bering flounder (Hippoglossoides robustus) sampled had empty stomachs. Our results indicate that ampeliscid amphipods, which have high biomass in the central region of the northern Bering Sea, are the most important prey for the dominant groundfish in the Chirikov Basin. Generally, all dominant benthic fish in the northern Bering Sea had narrow feeding niches, except snailfish. High diet overlap was found among many of the fish species, including Arctic cod and snailfish, snailfish and Arctic alligatorfish, and Arctic alligatorfish and Arctic staghorn sculpin. These findings are consistent with a relatively short food chain for benthic fish that are for the most part specialized feeders with narrow preferences for food and may be affected by changes in benthic prey distributions.  相似文献

Stomach contents were examined from 136 Amazonian wingfin anchovy, Pterengraulis atherinoides (Engraulidae), caught from intertidal mangrove creeks at diurnal neap tides between June and September 1997 (early dry season) near Bragança (northern Brazil). The study found that P. atherinoides are specialized predators of juvenile Natantia and Teleostei (mean: 67 and 28% by dry weight, respectively). On average, 5.2 g ha?1 day?1 of Natantia and 2.6 g ha?1 day?1 of Teleostei (wet weight) were eaten by P. atherinoides. Diet changed with fish size as well as by month. While smaller sizes still fed on several food items (e.g. the copepod Pseudiaptomus marshii, the brachyuran crab Pachygrapsus gracilis, amphipods), fish >13 cm standard length (SL) fed exclusively on Natantia and Teleostei. Copepods were especially abundant in July and August, dominating the diet of fish <9 cm SL in numbers (92%). Our results suggest a positive relationship between predator size and prey size, both in penaeid and piscine prey. However, the largest predator size class apparently selected fewer but larger Teleostei prey. More than 64% of Natantia were juvenile penaeid shrimps of commercial importance (Fenneropenaeus subtilis, F. schmitti, Xiphopenaeus kroyeri). Comparison with ichthyoplankton samples taken simultaneously showed that Sciaenidae and Mugilidae were positively selected while Gobiidae and Engraulidae were negatively selected. The presence of pranzia larvae in the stomachs of fish <10 cm SL, from July onward, suggests that these sizes fulfil a mutually beneficial ‘cleaning’ function on other fish. Block net sampling at neap tides showed that P. atherinoides were present in intertidal mangrove creeks throughout the submergence period, suggesting temporal optimization of the foraging time in the eulittoral.  相似文献

The stomach contents of 516 Pomatomus saltatrix and 506 Cynoscion guatucupa from southern Brazil were examined. Both species preyed primarily upon teleosts and crustaceans and occasionally squid. Seasonal variation in the diet was related to prey availability in the area, confirming the opportunistic feeding behaviour of both species. During the summer, P. saltatrix preyed upon four prey species (Loligo sanpaulensis, Artemesia longinaris, Mullus argentinae and Paralonchurus brasiliensis), whereas in the autumn and winter Engraulis anchoita was the predominant prey. C. guatucupa similarly preyed upon A. longinaris and P. brasiliensis during the summer, with juvenile C. guatucupa and E. anchoita also consumed. The latter species was an important dietary constituent during other seasons, as were A. longinaris (autumn), Umbrina canosai (winter), Trachurus latami and euphausids (spring). Although P. saltatrix had a broader diet than C. guatucupa during the summer, the latter species had a broader diet overall. Diet breadths were lower from autumn to spring, due to the predominance of E. anchoita in the diet of both species. This restricted diet resulted in significant intra- and inter-specific diet overlap during the winter but, because of the seasonal abundance of E. anchoita, the high levels of diet overlap do not necessarily indicate competition.  相似文献
