Five subgroups of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were detected by PCR in three macrophyte rhizospheres (Polygonum densiflorum, Hymenachne donacifolia, and Ludwigia helminthorriza) and three subgroups in Eichhornia crassipes from La Granja, a floodplain lake from the upper Madeira basin. The SRB community varied according to the macrophyte species but with different degrees of association with their roots. The rhizosphere of the C4 plant Polygonum densiflorum had higher frequencies of SRB subgroups as well as higher mercury methylation potentials (27.5 to 36.1%) and carbon (16.06 ± 5.40%), nitrogen (2.03 ± 0.64%), Hg (94.50 ± 6.86 ng Hg g−1), and methylmercury (8.25 ± 1.45 ng Hg g−1) contents than the rhizosphere of the C3 plant Eichhornia crassipes. Mercury methylation in Polygonum densiflorum and Eichhornia crassipes was reduced when SRB metabolism was inhibited by sodium molybdate. 相似文献

Processes leading to the bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) in northern wetlands are largely unknown. We have studied various ecological niches within a remote, acidic forested lake ecosystem in the southwestern Adirondacks, NY, to discover that mats comprised of Sphagnum moss were a hot spot for mercury (Hg) and MeHg accumulation (190.5 and 18.6 ng g?1 dw, respectively). Furthermore, significantly higher potential methylation rates were measured in Sphagnum mats as compared with other sites within Sunday Lake's ecosystem. Although MPN estimates showed a low biomass of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), 2.8 × 10? cells mL?1 in mat samples, evidence consisting of (1) a twofold stimulation of potential methylation by the addition of sulfate, (2) a significant decrease in Hg methylation in the presence of the sulfate reduction inhibitor molybdate, and (3) presence of dsrAB-like genes in mat DNA extracts, suggested that SRB were involved in Hg methylation. Sequencing of dsrB genes indicated that novel SRB, incomplete oxidizers including Desulfobulbus spp. and Desulfovibrio spp., and syntrophs dominated the sulfate-reducing guild in the Sphagnum moss mat. Sphagnum, a bryophyte dominating boreal peatlands, and its associated microbial communities appear to play an important role in the production and accumulation of MeHg in high-latitude ecosystems. 相似文献

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) from the anaerobic sediments of the freshwater Baihua Lake (Guizhou Province, China) at eutrophicated sites polluted with heavy metals, particularly with mercury, have been studied. SRB belonging to the genus Desulfobulbus prevailed. A detailed study of the dominating Desulfobulbus isolate designated as strain BH revealed its difference in regards to genetic, morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics from the other species of this genus. Strain BH utilized a wide range of organic substrates, demonstrated a high level of hydrogen sulfide production, and could be considered an important component of the microbial community in the polluted lake. 相似文献

The standing crop and distribution of fish within the floating meadow habitat of Lago Mamirauá, an upper Amazonian floodplain lake, were studied during December 1993 when the water was rising and had just begun to enter the forest. The ichthyofauna was dominated by six groups, the Anostomidae, Gymnotiformes, Erythrinidae, Serrasalmidae, Synbranchidae and Cichlidae. For anchored meadow, total wet weight was estimated as 312 kg ha -1 and total number as 90 400 individuals ha-1 . This biomass estimate was probably below the annual maximum because some fish had already dispersed into the forest, but, the number of individuals was close to the annual maximum because of the recent arrival of juvenile Serrasalmidae and Cichlidae. For drifting islands of meadow fish biomass and density were estimated as 192kg ha-1 and 12 700 individuals ha-1 respectively. The Synbranchidae, Gymnotiformes and Erythrinidae avoided drifting meadow. In comparison, the Cichlidae and Anostomidae, while favouring marginal, anchored meadow, were frequently dispersed by drifting islands. The Siluriformes were unique in favouring drifting over anchored meadow. For this group the observed down-stream drift may be a seasonal migration to the main river channels. Juvenile fish avoided drifting islands, presumably to avoid being flushed from the lakes. Their abundance was lowest at the mouth of the lake. The generally abundant Serrasalmus spp. juveniles were absent from meadow at the mouth of the lake. 相似文献

The population behavior of Daphnia gessneri Herbst, 1967 in a floodplain lake (Lago Grande) of the lower Rio Solimões was investigated between April 1979 and March 1980 with regard to 1) predation by the fish called tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum, Characidae), 2) water level fluctuation and 3) water transparency. Zooplankton density samples were collected at two sites near mid-lake, where water depth and Secchi disc transparency were measured. In addition, qualitative samples of zooplankton and fish collections were taken at several sites in the adjacent floodplain areas. The author concludes that fluctuations in Daphnia gessneri populations correlate most with intense predation by fish and water turbidity. 相似文献

Uptake of ammonium and nitrate by plankton was measured in tropicalLake Calado, Brazil. Nitrate uptake was strongly influencedby light and was light saturated at {small tilde}340 µEm2 s1. In contrast, uptake of ammonium was lessinfluenced by light, and saturated at {small tilde}250 µEm2 s1. Uptake rates of both forms of nitrogenwere inhibited by up to 80% at light intensities higher thanthose required for saturation. Concentrations of ammonium andnitrate also had a strong influence on uptake rates. Half-saturationconstants (0.35 µM) were usually greater than ambientconcentrations (0.10.6 µM), indicating that uptakerates at ambient concentrations were less than one-half of thesaturated rates. Ammonium is the more important type of inorganicnitrogen for plankton of Lake Calado because nitrate concentrationsremain low to undetectable except during periodic inputs ofnitrate-rich water from the Amazon River. Using the observeddependence of uptake on concentration and light, maximum uptakerates per unit chlorophyll were computed to be in reasonableagreement with rates derived from PBm values for carbon uptake.

Planktonic regeneration and uptake of ammonium was measuredin Lake Calado on the floodplain of the Amazon River (Brazil).In the epilimnion of the lake, regeneration and uptake averaged0.86 ± 0.15 and 1.9 ± 0.4 µmol NH411h1 respectively. Uptake exceeded regeneration under theammonium-enriched conditions of our experimental incubations,but uptake and regeneration are in near-balance at in situ ammoniumconcentrations of <1 µM. In experiments that simulatedlake overturn, samples from the meta- and hypolimnion had higherrates of regeneration (1.4 ± 0.6) and lower rates ofuptake (0.89 ± 0.53) than epilimnetic samples. Duringinflow of water from the Amazon River and a local stream, ammoniumregeneration rates were similar to those measured in the epilimnion(0.84 ± 0.22), but the uptake rates were lower (0.49± 0.13). Although regeneration always exceeded uptakein the overturn and inflow experiments, ammonium did not accumulate.Rapid isotope dilution of the ammonium pool occurred in theincubations, and the effect of not accounting for isotope dilutioncould result in underestimating uptake rates by a factor of25 in the epilimnion of this tropical lake. 相似文献

Tissue-specific differences in cytosine methylation and their association with differential gene expression in sorghum 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
It has been well established that DNA cytosine methylation plays essential regulatory roles in imprinting gene expression in endosperm, and hence normal embryonic development, in the model plant Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Nonetheless, the developmental role of this epigenetic marker in cereal crops remains largely unexplored. Here, we report for sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) differences in relative cytosine methylation levels and patterns at 5'-CCGG sites in seven tissues (endosperm, embryo, leaf, root, young inflorescence, anther, and ovary), and characterize a set of tissue-specific differentially methylated regions (TDMRs). We found that the most enriched TDMRs in sorghum are specific for the endosperm and are generated concomitantly but imbalanced by decrease versus increase in cytosine methylation at multiple 5'-CCGG sites across the genome. This leads to more extensive demethylation in the endosperm than in other tissues, where TDMRs are mainly tissue nonspecific rather than specific to a particular tissue. Accordingly, relative to endosperm, the other six tissues showed grossly similar levels though distinct patterns of cytosine methylation, presumably as a result of a similar extent of concomitant decrease versus increase in cytosine methylation that occurred at variable genomic loci. All four tested TDMRs were validated by bisulfite genomic sequencing. Diverse sequences were found to underlie the TDMRs, including those encoding various known-function or predicted proteins, transposable elements, and those bearing homology to putative imprinted genes in maize (Zea mays). We further found that the expression pattern of at least some genic TDMRs was correlated with its tissue-specific methylation state, implicating a developmental role of DNA methylation in regulating tissue-specific or -preferential gene expression in sorghum. 相似文献

Summary The acoustic behaviour of 15 sympatric and synchronically breeding species of frogs in an area of floating meadows near Manaus (Brazil) was studied for a period of 8 months. The calling positions of each species can be identified with certain physiognomic types of vegetation.Sound analyses were used to compare the mating calls. The main variables are dominant frequency, call duration and pulse repetition rate. Each of the 15 species has a distinct mating call and differs from the acoustic behaviour of each other one. Eleven species are separated in their dominant frequency ranges within their specific calling sites. Species sharing emphasised frequency ranges within identical calling sites differ greatly in at least two temporal variables.The roles of calling position, spectral, and temporal features of mating calls in species recognition and premating reproductive isolation are discussed. 相似文献

Soil respiration rates vary significantly among major plant biomes, suggesting that vegetation type influences the rate of soil respiration. However, correlations among climatic factors, vegetation distributions, and soil respiration rates make cause-effect arguments difficult. Vegetation may affect soil respiration by influencing soil microclimate and structure, the quantity of detritus supplied to the soil, the quality of that detritus, and the overall rate of root respiration. At the global scale, soil respiration rates correlate positively with litterfall rates in forests, as previously reported, and with aboveground net primary productivity in grasslands, providing evidence of the importance of detritus supply. To determine the direction and magnitude of the effect of vegetation type on soil respiration, we collated data from published studies where soil respiration rates were measured simultaneously in two or more plant communities. We found no predictable differences in soil respiration between cropped and vegetation-free soils, between forested and cropped soils, or between grassland and cropped soils, possibly due to the diversity of crops and cropping systems included. Factors such as temperature, moisture availability, and substrate properties that simultaneously influence the production and consumption of organic matter are more important in controlling the overall rate of soil respiration than is vegetation type in most cases. However, coniferous forests had 10% lower rates of soil respiration than did adjacent broad-leaved forests growing on the same soil type, and grasslands had, on average, 20% higher soil respiration rates than did comparable forest stands, demonstrating that vegetation type does in some cases significantly affect rates of soil respiration. 相似文献

Matched sets of gillnets of different mesh-sizes were used to evaluate the degree to which contiguous and connected flooded forest and floating meadow habitats are characterized by distinct fish faunas during the flooding season in the Peruvian Amazon. For fishes between 38–740 mm standard length ( L S ) (the size range captured by the gear), an overriding pattern of faunal similarity emerged between these two habitats. The mean species richness, diversity, abundance, fish mass, mean and maximum L S , and maximum mass did not differ significantly between flooded forest and floating meadows. Species abundances followed a log-normal distribution in which three species accounted for 60–70% of the total abundance in each habitat. Despite these similarities, multivariate analyses demonstrated subtle differences in species composition between flooded forest and adjacent floating macrophytes. In addition, the absolute number of species was higher in flooded forest, reflecting a higher percentage of rare species. The day–night species turnover was found to be greater in flooded forests than floating meadows. Further, nocturnal samples had higher abundances and greater species richness than diurnal samples in both habitats. Differences in habitat structural complexity between flooded forest and floating meadows may result in a higher abundance and species richness of day-active species in floating meadows. 相似文献

Mate choice matters for inclusive fitness, household economic efficiency, assimilation, stratification, and economic inequalities in society. In positive assortative mating, people pair with someone who resembles them along a trait, whereas in negative assortative mating, people pair with someone who differs from them along a trait. In industrial nations, people tend to follow positive assortative mating for fundamental demographic dimensions (e.g., age, schooling) and might practice negative assortative mating for economic outcomes (e.g., earnings). Research on assortative mating has focused on industrial nations, generally compared only one trait between couples, and paid scant attention to the effects of assortative mating for offspring well-being. If assortative mating enhances inclusive fitness, it might also enhance offspring well-being. Drawing on data from a farming–foraging society in the Bolivian Amazon (Tsimane') that practices preferential cross-cousin marriage, we (a) identify six parental traits (age, knowledge, wealth, schooling, height, and smiles) for which Tsimane' might practice assortative mating and (b) test the hypothesis that assortative mating enhances offspring well-being. Proxies for offspring well-being include height and school attainment. Tsimane' resemble people of industrial nations in practicing mostly positive assortative mating. Pairwise, mother–father and Pearson correlations of age, schooling, and earnings among Tsimane' resemble correlations of industrial nations. Correlation coefficients for the six parental traits were far higher than correlations that might happened just by chance. We found weak support for the hypothesis that assortative mating improves offspring well-being. 相似文献

Vertical distribution of bacteria in Lake Vanda, an Antarctic meromictic lake, was examined by the acridine orange epifluorescence direct count method. Total bacteria were 104–105 cells · ml–1 in the water at 55 m depth and above, and increased drastically to 107 cells · ml–1 in the bottom water. Filamentous or long rodshaped bacteria occurred at a high frequency in the upper layers, but in the bottom layers most bacteria were coccoidal or short rods. Mean bacterial cell volume in water of between 10 m and 60 m deep was fairly large compared with common bacterial populations in seawater and lake water. Aerobic heterotrophic bacteria were recovered from the water of a depth of 30 m and above, and were assumed to belong to Caulobacter. Viable heterotrophic bacteria were not recovered from the high salinity deep water by media prepared with the same deep water. Phototrophic purple non-sulphur bacteria were isolated by enrichment cultures from water at 55 m depth. 相似文献

Lake Batata is one of many clear water lakes located on the floodplain of the Trombetas River in the northern Brazilian Amazon. Lake Batata is distinctly different from other lakes of this region because, for a period of 10 years, its waters received tremendous amounts of aluminum ore tailings from a bauxite mining operation. Approximately 30% of the sediments of the upper basin of the 2100 hectare lake were covered by tailings before dumping was curtailed. The goal of this research was to identify factors controlling denitrification in the natural and impacted sediments of Lake Batata. Rates of denitrification in sediments were estimated in the laboratory by the acetylene blockage method. Denitrification was measured under four conditions: without amendment; amended with glucose; amended with nitrate; and amended with glucose and nitrate. Denitrification was observed only in assays amended with nitrate suggesting that availability of nitrate is a principle factor for controlling denitrification in the sediments of Lake Batata. Effects of nitrate amendments are most pronounced when the water level is low, i.e. during the hydroperiods of draw-down and low-water. 相似文献

Diurnal distribution and behavioral responses of fishes to extreme hypoxia in an Amazon floodplain lake 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Synopsis Because of the need for surface access for aquatic surface respiration (ASR), fish density increases were demonstrated for the open water of a floodplain lake during severe hypoxia. This indicates an O2-induced diurnal pattern of horizontal migrations between the zone of macrophyte cover and open water. Supplemental experimental investigations seem to suggest that species such as characoids,Colossoma macropomum andSchizodon fasciatum, deviate from this pattern. During long periods of oxygen depletion, they return to the region of macrophyte growth and survive there without displaying the usual kind of ASR. Mortality studies in net cages exposed in natural water bodies confirmed that only these two species are able to survive severe hypoxia beneath macrophyte cover. The possibility of an O2-input through the root system of plants is discussed. The O2-concentration has a significant influence on the locomotory behavior and the frequency of opercular movement in characoids. There is significantly less locomotory activity beneath the macrophytes during periods of oxygen depletion among those species not forced to migrate than among those in the open water regions, where normal ASR behavior is possible. 相似文献

Effects of acidification on mercury methylation, demethylation, and volatilization in sediments from an acid-susceptible lake 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of experimental acidification on mercury methylation, demethylation, and volatilization was examined in surficial sediment samples from a weakly buffered northern Wisconsin lake. All mercury transformations were measured with radioisotopic tracers. Acidification of sediment pH with H2SO4, HCl, or HNO3 significantly decreased 203Hg(II) methylation. Acidification of pH 6.1 (ambient) sediments to pH 4.5 with either H2SO4 or HCl inhibited methylation by over 65%. The decreased methylation was due to the increased hydrogen ion concentration because methylation was not affected by concentrations of Na2SO4 or NaCl equimolar to the amount of acid added. Inhibition of methylation was observed even after prolonged acidification of sediments to pH 5.0 for up to 74 days. Acidification of sediments to pH 5.5, 4.5, and 3.5 with HNO3 resulted in a near complete inhibition of methylation at each pH. Similarly, the addition of equimolar amounts of NaNO3 resulted in a near complete inhibition of methylation, indicating that the inhibition was due to the nitrate ion rather than to the acidity. Demethylation of methyl mercury was not affected by pHs between 8.0 and 4.4, but sharply decreased below pH 4.4. Volatilization of 203Hg(II) from surface sediments was less than 2% of methylation activity and was not significantly different from that in killed sediments. This study indicated that acidification of sediments inhibits mercury methylation and that the observed increase in the mercury burdens in fish from low pH lakes is not due to increased production of methylmercury in sediments. 相似文献
