Despite the Roggeveldberge comprising the montane heart of the celebrated Hantam-Roggeveld Centre of Plant Endemism (HRC), this section of the southern Great Escarpment in South Africa is botanically poorly known. A detailed physical, historical and phytogeographical overview of the Roggeveldberge is thus presented, and a checklist of 513 plant taxa is provided as a contribution towards a more complete flora for the Roggeveld-Komsberg Escarpment. The HRC is considered in detail, including various delimitations, and all species purported to be endemic to the HRC are reviewed and separated into actual endemics, near-endemics and species incorrectly considered as endemic.  相似文献

Although it is common for ant surveys to uncover previously uncollected species, a recent study of subterranean ants in Amazonian Ecuador has indicated that an entire ant fauna may remain largely undiscovered. Here we report on the first systematic investigation of subterranean ants in northern Australia, in order to assess the extent to which the high abundance and diversity of subterranean ants in Amazonia is apparent in tropical Australia. We use a novel sampling technique that combines elements of an attractant bait and a pitfall trap, and allows many traps to be deployed simultaneously. Our main study was conducted at three closely approximated sites in Darwin, where the local ant fauna has been intensively surveyed using conventional (above-ground) sampling techniques. The 720 traps deployed resulted in 421 species records, representing 29 species from 17 genera. Sixteen of these species have cryptobiotic morphology, with four recorded here for the first time. Remarkably, one of these four (a blind species of Solenopsis) was the second most frequently caught species in subterranean traps, with 70 records. Ant abundance, species richness and composition varied markedly between sites, despite site similarity in soils and vegetation. Total ant records were greater in the middle compared with start of the wet season, declined with depth, and were greater after 4 days than one. Sampling at six sites in the Mitchell Falls area of the northern Kimberley region, 1,200 km southwest of Darwin, also revealed several cryptobiotic species new to science, including a new genus record (Pseudolasius) for Western Australia. Our underground sampling has therefore revealed an abundant and diverse subterranean ant fauna in northern Australia, containing many cryptobiotic species not previously collected. We use our results to provide methodological guidelines for most effectively sampling this fauna. Combined with the Amazonian study, our findings indicate that a specialist subterranean ant fauna, including numerous species remaining to be discovered, might be a feature of tropical landscapes throughout the world.  相似文献

Biodiversity in southern Africa is globally extraordinary but threatened by human activities. Although there are considerable biodiversity conservation initiatives within the region, no one has yet assessed the potential use of large carnivores in such actions. Surrogate approaches have often been suggested as one such way of capitalizing on large carnivores. Here we review the suitability of the large carnivore guild (i.e., brown hyaena Hyaena hyaena, spotted hyaena Crocuta crocutta, cheetah Acinonyx jubatus, leopard Panthera pardus, lion Panthea leo and African wild dog Lycaon pictus) to act as surrogate species for biodiversity conservation in southern Africa. We suggest that the guild must be complete for the large carnivores to fully provide their role as ecological keystones. The potential for large carnivores to act as umbrella and indicator species seems limited. However, self-sustaining populations of large carnivores may be useful indicators of unfragmented landscapes. Moreover, diversity within the large carnivore guild may reflect overall biodiversity. Although the global appeal of the large African carnivores makes them important international flagships, we stress that international conservation funding must be linked to local communities for them to be important also locally. In summary, we suggest that the flagship value of these large carnivores should be used to promote biodiversity conservation in the region, and that the suggested relationship between large carnivore diversity and overall biodiversity is empirically tested. Finally we suggest that direct conservation activities should focus on enhancing the keystone values of large carnivores through complete guild conservation and restoration.  相似文献

Albuca tenuifolia Baker was described and illustrated in 1872 from South African material sent by Peter MacOwan to William Wilson Saunders in England, without a precise locality. Since then this species has been cited in later works although with many uncertainties. In addition, no type has been designated for this taxon. After field work in the Great Escarpment in South Africa, some populations of A. tenuifolia have been rediscovered growing in rocky places at high altitude. Data on morphology, ecology, and distribution are reported, and a lectotype and epitype are designated to fix the use of the name. Affinities with other species are also discussed.  相似文献

The Boschberg and Groot-Bruintjieshoogde form the wettest and floristically most distinct section of the Sneeuberg mountain complex. As such they warrant a separate detailed investigation, particularly in terms of their connectivity between the main Sneeuberg in the west, the Great Winterberg-Amatolas in the east, and with the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) to the south and south-west. Following a detailed botanical investigation and overview we conclude that the Boschberg and Groot-Bruintjieshoogde are a floristic hub between the CFR and southern Great Escarpment, as well as between the moister eastern and drier western components of the Great Escarpment. Our data confirm that the Boschberg forms part of the south-eastern connection between the CFR and the Afromontane region in southern Africa, a connection first suggested by Weimarck (1941).  相似文献

The number of described species on the planet is about 1.9 million, with ca. 17,000 new species described annually, mostly from the tropics. However, taxonomy is usually described as a science in crisis, lacking manpower and funding, a politically acknowledged problem known as the Taxonomic Impediment. Using data from the Fauna Europaea database and the Zoological Record, we show that contrary to general belief, developed and heavily-studied parts of the world are important reservoirs of unknown species. In Europe, new species of multicellular terrestrial and freshwater animals are being discovered and named at an unprecedented rate: since the 1950s, more than 770 new species are on average described each year from Europe, which add to the 125,000 terrestrial and freshwater multicellular species already known in this region. There is no sign of having reached a plateau that would allow for the assessment of the magnitude of European biodiversity. More remarkably, over 60% of these new species are described by non-professional taxonomists. Amateurs are recognized as an essential part of the workforce in ecology and astronomy, but the magnitude of non-professional taxonomist contributions to alpha-taxonomy has not been fully realized until now. Our results stress the importance of developing a system that better supports and guides this formidable workforce, as we seek to overcome the Taxonomic Impediment and speed up the process of describing the planetary biodiversity before it is too late.  相似文献

Immunopharmacology is a hybrid science which has been founded upon the principles, theory, and technical developments of both immunology and pharmacology, but which has a unique identity incorporating both basic and applied areas of research. Basic immunopharmacological research is concerned with the underlying mechanisms by which endogenous and synthetic chemicals interact with the cells of the immune system. Important areas of research include the actions of chemicals such as lymphokines, cytokines, complement, kinins, autacoids, drugs, and even neuropeptides on immune function. Applied immunopharmacology is concerned with the development and testing of new immunomodulatory drugs which will be of benefit to clinical medicine but also as basic research tools. In the past, the two fields of immunology and pharmacology have contributed to each other in many significant ways. Immunology has contributed to pharmacological research by the development of antibodies which are frequently used today as specific probes for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of many different classes of chemicals of interest. Pharmacology has contributed to the field of immunology by providing basic pharmacological information on subjects such as the mediators of hypersensitivity reactions and inflammation. In the future, the truly hybrid field of immunopharmacology promises to have an expanding role in clinical medicine and basic research. This prediction is based on the observation that recombinant lymphokines and newly discovered immunomodulatory substances have begun to enter the clinic in ever increasing numbers. Future immunopharmacological research will include the study of the pharmacology of these lymphokines but also the rational development of new drugs that act as antagonists or agonists for the endogenous lymphokines that normally regulate the immune response.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Late life is a distinct phase of life that occurs after the aging period and is now known to be general among aging organisms. While aging is characterized by a deterioration in survivorship and fertility, late life is characterized by the cessation of such age-related deterioration. Thus, late life presents a new and interesting area of research not only for evolutionary biology but also for physiology. In this article, we present the theoretical and experimental background to late life, as developed by evolutionary biologists and demographers. We discuss the discovery of late life and the two main theories developed to explain this phase of life: lifelong demographic heterogeneity theory and evolutionary theory based on the force of natural selection. Finally, we suggest topics for future physiological research on late life.  相似文献

A new species of a phyllophorid holothurian, Neothyonidium arthroprocessum, is described from the shallow waters of False Bay, South Africa. The new species is distinct from other phyllophorids in possessing peculiar narrow transverse slits in the body wall, a calcareous ring with joined posterior processes to the radial plates, and short thick perforated rods as body wall deposits. The concept of biodiversity hotspot at the regional and global scale has contributed to the improvement of the conservation strategies. The need for precise evaluation is often hampered by lapses of knowledge in some Mediterranean regional hotspots. The objective of the present work is to analyse the diversity of endemic and rare flora in the northern part of Algeria. According to the bibliographical data that are available, the most remarkable areas for endemism are the Oran's coast, the Great Kabylia, and the Small Kabylia. As far as rare species are concerned, coastal Numidia comes first, then the Algiers surroundings. This group 'Kabylias-Numidia-Kroumiria' comprises an unrecognised regional hotspot, made of forests, mountains and coastal ecosystems and threatened by human activities. In the face of growing threats, it is urgent to reinforce national and international policies of conservation and to cooperate for a better floristic knowledge of all the areas mentioned above.  相似文献

Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. and the leading cause of dementia in the elderly population. Until recently, there was little hope of finding a way to prevent the underlying brain pathology from progressing toward the inevitable conclusion of the disease. However, new immunotherapeutic approaches have been described that are based on vaccination with the beta-amyloid 1-42 peptide (Abeta). The encouraging efficacy and safety of Abeta immunization in reducing neuropathology in animal models of AD has opened up new therapeutic possibilities for patients. Immunization with Abeta is aimed at reducing the Abeta-associated pathology of AD. It is hypothesized that this approach will also reduce the cascade of downstream events leading to neuronal cell loss and, ultimately, dementia. The ensuing articles in this issue describe various aspects of the Abeta immunization strategy and their potential relevance to AD treatment.  相似文献

A total of 1 457 recoveries and controls of European Swallows Hirundo rustica in the South African Bird Ringing Unit data bank were analysed to provide an update of the apparent origins and dispersion of migrant European Swallows in southern Africa, to investigate local movements within southern Africa, and to yield an estimate of the age structure of the visiting migrants. Although birds from the former USSR and from Britain and Ireland predominate, over 200 recoveries from 20 other European countries have been recorded. More than half of the swallows migrating to southern Africa are from the central third of the species' breeding range. The dispersion of recoveries of swallows ringed in Britain and Ireland is widespread, with 55% recorded from the Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. Controls of southern African-ringed swallows at roosts and recoveries elsewhere in the subcontinent suggest that the daily range of migrant swallows is encompassed within a circle of 100 km diameter, but wide-ranging intra-seasonal movements within South Africa have also been recorded. Conservative estimates of the age of European Swallows at recovery indicate that as many as 14% of migrant swallows ringed in southern Africa may Survive to more than three years of age. It is suggested that the experience of migrants that survive to return to Africa one or more times may permit some flexibility in choice of final destination and that mixing of populations in roosts may result in birds arriving at new destinations.  相似文献

Abstract

A TWINSPAN classification divides southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho) into two main bryofloristic regions: (1) a subtropical or palaeotropical region in the northern, eastern and southern parts, characterised by a predominantly mesophytic moss flora; and (2) a temperate or austral region in the central and western parts of the study area with a xerophytic moss flora. The subtropical region is subdivided into the Zambezian and Afromontane Regions, and the temperate region into the Karoo-Namib and Highlands Regions. The four regions are further subdivided into eight domains: (1) the Zambezian Region into the Caprivi and Bushveld Domains; (2) the Afromontane Region into the Drakensberg and Cape Domains; (3) the Karoo-Namib Region into the Western Cape and Namaqua Domains; and (4) the Highlands Region into the Drakensberg Alpine and Upper Karoo Domains. Meaningful phytogeographical classification of the arid and semi-arid central and northwestern sectors of the study area is dependent on future plant collecting or sampling efforts.  相似文献

Adhesions between the cell and the extracellular matrix (ECM) are mechanosensitive multi-protein assemblies that transmit force across the cell membrane and regulate biochemical signals in response to the chemical and mechanical environment. These combined functions in force transduction, signaling and mechanosensing contribute to cellular phenotypes that span development, homeostasis and disease. These adhesions form, mature and disassemble in response to actin organization and physical forces that originate from endogenous myosin activity or external forces by the extracellular matrix. Despite advances in our understanding of the protein composition, interactions and regulation, our understanding of matrix adhesion structure and organization, how forces affect this organization, and how these changes dictate specific signaling events is limited. Insights across multiple structural levels are acutely needed to elucidate adhesion structure and ultimately the molecular basis of signaling and mechanotransduction. Here we describe the challenges and recent advances and prospects for unraveling the structure of cell-matrix adhesions and their response to force.  相似文献

Landscape transformation by humans is virtually ubiquitous, with several suggestions being made that the world's biomes should now be classified according to the extent and nature of this transformation. Even those areas that are thought to have a relatively limited human footprint have experienced substantial biodiversity change. This is true of both marine and terrestrial systems of southern Africa, a region of high biodiversity and including several large conservation areas. Global change drivers have had substantial effects across many levels of the biological hierarchy as is demonstrated in this review, which focuses on terrestrial systems. Interactions among drivers, such as between climate change and invasion, and between changing fire regimes and invasion, are complicating attribution of change effects and management thereof. Likewise CO(2) fertilization is having a much larger impact on terrestrial systems than perhaps commonly acknowledged. Temporal changes in biodiversity, and the seeming failure of institutional attempts to address them, underline a growing polarization of world views, which is hampering efforts to address urgent conservation needs.  相似文献
