The abundance, growth, and grazing loss rates of picophytoplankton were investigated in August 2002 in Barguzin Bay, Lake Baikal. Water samples for incubation were taken once at a near-shore station and twice at an offshore station. Contributions of picophytoplankton to total phytoplankton were high (56.9–83.9%) at the offshore station and low (5.8–6.8%) at the near-shore station. The picophytoplankton community in the offshore station comprised mainly phycoerythrin (PE)-rich cyanobacteria, with eukaryotic picophytoplankton being less abundant. In contrast, as well as PE-rich cyanobacteria and eukaryotic picophytoplankton, phycocyanin (PC)-rich cyanobacteria were found in the near-shore station. At the offshore station, growth and grazing loss rates on 25 August were 0.56 and 0.43 day−1, respectively, and on 29 August, 0.69 and 0.83 day−1, respectively. At the near-shore station, growth and grazing loss rates were 1.61 and 0.70 day−1, respectively. These results show that there is a difference in the abundance, composition, and ecological role in the microbial food web of picophytoplankton between the near-shore and the offshore areas in Barguzin Bay.  相似文献

In Lake Baikal, picocyanobacteria are the most important primary producers during the summer. Freshwater picocyanobacteria are discriminated into either the phycoerythrin (PE)-rich or the phycocyanin (PC)-rich types according to their pigment composition. The distributions of these two types of picocyanobacteria were investigated in Barguzin Bay. The PC-rich type accounted for >98% of the total picocyanobacteria at the station near the shore of the bay where river water flows directly in. In the offshore area of the lake, all of the picocyanobacteria cells were of the PE-rich type. In addition, the occurrence of the PC-rich type was restricted to the station, where the attenuation coefficient exceeded 0.25 m−1. Near the shore, where the turbidity was high (>1 NTU), the cell densities of both the PE- and PC-rich types increased away from the river mouth. This indicates that the PC-rich type cells grow near the shore of the bay where turbidity is high. Since the PC-rich type could not grow well when cells were incubated in offshore lake water, restricted distribution of the PC-rich type could also be explained by their growth capability. The present study clearly demonstrated the shift in the pigment type composition of picocyanobacteria from the coastal to the pelagic zone of Lake Baikal. The co-existence of the two pigment types probably enables the abundance of the picocyanobacterial community to be stable over a broader range of environmental conditions than would be possible for a single pigment type.  相似文献

Lake Suigetsu is a typical meromictic lake in Japan characterized by a permanent chemocline at a depth of between 3 and 8 m separating the oxic freshwater mixolimnion from anoxic saline sulfidogenic monimolimnion. Dominant bacterioplankton populations in Lake Suigetsu were investigated using PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA gene fragments. The bacterial population was vertically stratified, and temporal shifts in the microbial communities were observed in both the oxic and anoxic layers of Lake Suigetsu during the sampling period. Several dominant DGGE bands were excised and sequenced. In the chemocline, green sulfur bacteria phylogenetically related to the genera Prosthecochloris, Pelodyctyon, and Chlorobium within the phylum Chlorobi were dominant; the colorless sulfur bacteria closely related to the genus Thiomicrospira were detected. These sulfur bacterial groups appear to be important in the biogeochemical cycling of sulfur and/or carbon in Lake Suigetsu. Bacterial sequences affiliated with the Bacteroidetes phylum were frequent among the dominant fragments in the DGGE profiles throughout the water column. Populations possessing a fermentative metabolism exist in Bacteroidetes, suggesting they may contribute to the degradation of organic matter in the anoxic environment of Lake Suigetsu.  相似文献

The spatiotemporal distribution of chlorophyll pigments (chloropigments) in the water column of a meromictic lake, Lake Suigetsu (Fukui, Japan), was investigated. Water samples were collected from the central basin of Lake Suigetsu bimonthly between May 2008 and March 2010 at appropriate depths, including the oxic surface, oxic–anoxic interface, and anoxic bottom layers. Chlorophyll a, related to cyanobacteria and eukaryotic phytoplankton, was detected throughout the water column during the years of the study, whereas bacteriochlorophyll e, related to brown-colored green sulfur bacteria, was detected in the anoxic layers below the chemocline at a maximum concentration of 825 μg L?1. The concentration of bacteriochlorophyll e was generally maximal at or just below the chemocline of the lake. The cellular content of bacteriochlorophyll e was estimated to be low in the upper part of the chemocline and tended to increase with increasing water depth. Bacteriochlorophyll a, which was presumably related to purple sulfur bacteria, was only detected at the chemocline during summer and autumn at concentrations of 5.4–16.3 μg L?1. Our analysis of the chloropigment distribution for the two years of the study suggested that brown-colored green sulfur bacteria are the predominant phototroph in the anoxic layers of Lake Suigetsu, and that these play a significant role in the carbon and sulfur cycling of the lake, especially from spring to summer.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of sulfate-reducing bacteria was investigated in a shallow, eutrophic, meromictic lake, Lake Harutori, located in a residential area of Kushiro, Japan. A steep chemocline, characterized by gradients of oxygen, sulfide and salinity, was found at a depth of 3.5–4.0 m. The sulfide concentration at the bottom of the lake was high (up to a concentration of 10.7 mM). Clone libraries were constructed using the aprA gene, which encodes adenosine-5′-phosphosulfate reductase subunit A, in order to monitor sulfate-reducing bacteria. In the aprA clone libraries, the most abundant sequences were those from the Desulfosarcina–Desulfococcus (DSS) group. A primer set for a DSS group-specific 16S rRNA gene was used to construct another clone library, analysis of which revealed that the uncultured group of sulfate-reducing bacteria, SEEP SRB-1, accounted for nearly half of the obtained sequences. Quantification of the major bacterial groups by catalyzed reporter deposition-fluorescence in situ hybridization demonstrated that the DSS group accounted for 3.2–4.8% of the total bacterial community below the chemocline. The results suggested that the DSS group was one of the major groups of sulfate-reducing bacteria and that these presumably metabolically versatile bacteria might play an important role in sulfur cycling in Lake Harutori.  相似文献

The relationships of the halocline to both water quality and phytoplankton composition in Lake Obuchi, a shallow brackish lake in northern Japan, were investigated from April 2001 to December 2004. The halocline in this lake became stronger in summer (July–September, mean maximum density gradient 4.3–5.8 ρtm−1) but weaker in spring, fall, and winter (1.9–3.3 ρtm−1). Although the difference in water quality between the upper and lower layers separated by the halocline was high in summer, nutrients (PO43−-P and NH4+-N) were eluted from the bottom sediment as levels of dissolved oxygen decreased in the bottom layer because of the strong stratification caused by the halocline formed over the long term. Moreover, phytoplankton taxa composition also differed between the upper and lower layers in summer, but was similar in other seasons. The dominant phytoplankton taxa in the upper layer in summer were Skeletonema costatum and Cyclotella spp., whereas in the lower layer, Gymnodinium spp. (Dinophyceae) and Chlorophyceae, which prefer eutrophic and low dissolved oxygen conditions, dominated. This suggests that the halocline was related to differentiations in both water quality and ecosystem components between the upper and lower layers in the brackish lake water.  相似文献

We studied microbial N2 production via anammox and denitrification in the anoxic water column of a restored mining pit lake in Germany over an annual cycle. We obtained high-resolution hydrochemical profiles using a continuous pumping sampler. Lake Rassnitzer is permanently stratified at ca. 29 m depth, entraining anoxic water below a saline density gradient. Mixed-layer nitrate concentrations averaged ca. 200 μmol L−1, but decreased to zero in the anoxic bottom waters. In contrast, ammonium was <5 μmol L−1 in the mixed layer but increased in the anoxic waters to ca. 600 μmol L−1 near the sediments. In January and October, 15N tracer measurements detected anammox activity (maximum 504 nmol N2 L−1 d−1 in 15NH4+-amended incubations), but no denitrification. In contrast, in May, N2 production was dominated by denitrification (maximum 74 nmol N2 L−1 d−1). Anammox activity in May was significantly lower than in October, as characterized by anammox rates (maximum 6 vs. 16 nmol N2 L−1 d−1 in incubations with 15NO3), as well as relative and absolute anammox bacterial cell abundances (0.56% vs. 0.98% of all bacteria, and 2.7×104 vs. 5.2×104 anammox cells mL−1, respectively) (quantified by catalyzed reporter deposition-fluorescence in situ hybridization (CARD-FISH) with anammox bacteria-specific probes). Anammox bacterial diversity was investigated with anammox bacteria-specific 16S rRNA gene clone libraries. The majority of anammox bacterial sequences were related to the widespread Candidatus Scalindua sorokinii/brodae cluster. However, we also found sequences related to Candidatus S. wagneri and Candidatus Brocadia fulgida, which suggests a high anammox bacterial diversity in this lake comparable with estuarine sediments.  相似文献

In 1981–1982 Abert Lake had an area of 200 km2, with a mean depth of 2.5 m and a total dissolved salt concentration of 82 gl-1. The spatial distribution and abundance of the brine shrimp, Artemia salina, were monitored for 1981–1982. In 1981 during the midsummer months, with sampling primarily in the eastern side of Abert Lake, brine shrimp populations showed peak densities of 2–4 ind. 1-1. In 1982, peak abundance occurred in early July and ranged between 5–8 ind. 1-1. Lakewide estimates of brine shrimp derived from 14 collecting stations and assuming a uniform distribution over the lake resulted in estimates of lakewide abundance of 3 × 1011 adults with a total biomass of 7 × 106 kg. The major algal species in the lake was a benthic filamentous green alga (Ctenocladus circinnatus).  相似文献

1. Abundance and bacterial production (BP) of heterotrophic bacteria (HBact) were measured in the north and south basins of Lake Tanganyika, East Africa, during seasonal sampling series between 2002 and 2007. The major objective of the study was to assess whether BP can supplement phytoplankton particulate primary production (particulate PP) in the pelagic waters, and whether BP and particulate PP are related in this large lake. HBact were enumerated in the 0–100 m surface layer by epifluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry; BP was quantified using 3H‐thymidine incorporation, usually in three mixolimnion layers (0–40, 40–60 and 60–100 m). 2. Flow cytometry allowed three subpopulations to be distinguished: low nucleic acid content bacteria (LNA), high nucleic acid content bacteria (HNA) and Synechococcus‐like picocyanobacteria (PCya). The proportion of HNA was on average 67% of total bacterial abundance, and tended to increase with depth. HBact abundance was between 1.2 × 105 and 4.8 × 106 cells mL−1, and was maximal in the 0–40 m layer (i.e. roughly, the euphotic layer). Using a single conversion factor of 15 fg C cell−1, estimated from biovolume measurements, average HBact biomass (integrated over a 100‐m water column depth) was 1.89 ± 1.05 g C m−2. 3. Significant differences in BP appeared between seasons, especially in the south basin. The range of BP integrated over the 0–100 m layer was 93–735 mg C m−2 day−1, and overlapped with the range of particulate PP (150–1687 mg C m−2 day−1) measured in the same period of time at the same sites. 4. Depth‐integrated BP was significantly correlated to particulate PP and chlorophyll‐a, and BP in the euphotic layer was on average 25% of PP. 5. These results suggest that HBact contribute substantially to the particulate organic carbon available to consumers in Lake Tanganyika, and that BP may be sustained by phytoplankton‐derived organic carbon in the pelagic waters.  相似文献

The annual cycle of phytoplankton in saline, meromictic Ace Lake (68°2S.4S, 78°11.1E) in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica, was studied from January, 1979 to January 1980. Ace Lake has permanent gradients of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and hydrogen sulphide, and is ice covered with up to 2 m of ice for 10–12 months each year. The phytoplankton community had low diversity, consisting of only four species, all flagellates — a prasinophyte Pyramimonas gelidicola McFadden et al., a cryptophyte of the genus Cryptomonas; an unidentified colourless microflagellate, and an unarmoured dinoflagellate. These were restricted to the oxic zone of the lake from the surface to 10 m.The phytoplankton had a cycle of seven months of active growth over spring and summer. Low numbers of cells survived in the water column over winter. Spring growth was initiated below the ice by increased light penetration through the ice into the lake, enhanced at the time by the removal of surface snow which accumulated on the ice over winter. Peak phytoplankton biomass production was by the shade adapted P. gelidicola and occurred at the interface of the oxic and anoxic zones where substantial available nitrogen as ammonia is found. The three dominant phytoplankton species displayed distinct vertical stratification over the oxic zone. This stratification was not static and developed over spring as the flagellates migrated to preferred light climate zones. Mean cell volume of two of the flagellates varied significantly over the year. Minimum volumes were recorded in winter and volume increased progressively over spring to reach maximum mean cell volume in summer. Mean cell volume was positively correlated with light intensity (maximum ambient PAR at the respective depth for date of sample). Low cell volume in winter may be related to winter utilization of carbohydrate reserves by slow respiration, and may represent a survival mechanism.  相似文献

Quantitative zooplankton sampling was carried out biweekly during 16 months in Lake Nyahirya, a Western Uganda crater lake. Six out of 24 rotifer species recorded from the lake were quantitatively important (Horaella brehmi, Brachionus angularis, B. caudatus, Keratella tropica, Filinia longiseta and F. opoliensis, and three others were common (Brachionus falcatus, Asplanchna sieboldi and Conochiloides natans). Rotifer peaks were correlated with rainy periods and relatively clear water, which coincide with the European spring and autumn. All species were able to deal with hypoxic conditions. A clear niche separation can be observed between different genera and between species of the same genus. The population dynamics of the rotifers seem to be ruled by repeated irregular environmental fluctuations. Rainfall appears to be a primary steering factor.  相似文献

Methane production in meromictic Ace Lake,Antarctica   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Methane occurred in the monimolimnion, at depths greater than 11 m, of an antarctic meromictic lake, Ace Lake (depth 24.7 m). Although the water of the lake was of approximate marine salinity, bottom waters were depleted in sulfate (less than 1 mmol 1–1). The temperature of the bottom waters of the lake were constantly between 1 °C and 2 °C. Rates of methanogenesis from 14C-labelled precursors (bicarbonate, formate and acetate) were determined in time course experiments with the detection of 14CH4 produced by a gas chromatography-gas proportional counting system. Rates of 14CH4 production were difficult to determine as the reactions were always near our limit of detection.Reliable determinations of rates of methanogenesis at some depths using some precursors were obtained, the fastest rate being 2.5 µmol kg–1 day–1 at depth 20 m. Assuming constant rates of methanogenesis with time, this would equate to a turnover of methane in the lake every two years. The slow rate of methanogenesis suggests that the methanogens in Ace Lake may be working at well below their optimum temperature although definitive statements regarding the presence of psychrophilic methanogens in this antarctic lake must await isolation attempts or longer field studies using alternative methodologies.  相似文献

Seasonal variation through one year in total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), phytoplankton biomass, phytoplankton species composition and other environmental factors were examined in Lake Sonachi, a tropical meromictic soda lake. Mean concentrations of TN and TP were 11 000 µg N l-1 and 100 µg P l-1, respectively. Maximum concentrations of TN and TP occurred in the monimolimnion. Phytoplankton biomass ranged from 350 to 1260 mg m-3. Synechococcus bacillaris, a small coccoid cyanophyte, dominated the phytoplankton. The mean chlorophyll a concentration of 37 mg · m-3 was a modest value when compared with those of other tropical soda lakes. High TN:TP ratios indicated phosphorus limitation in the lake.  相似文献

Vertical distribution of planktonic rotifers is described in relation to temperature and oxygen in Lake La Cruz, a single-doline, closed karstic lake (121 m diameter and 25 m maximum depth) which shows iron meromixis. Samples were taken by peristaltic pumping at 10 cm depth intervals in the oxycline zone from June 1987 to September 1988. A model of rotifer vertical structure in stratified lakes is proposed. Rotifers concentrate their populations at the depths with intense gradients. As stratification develops some rotifer populations show a downward migration following the thermocline and some others show an upward migration following the oxycline. The production-respiration balance in the lake, and so the position of the oxycline with respect to the thermocline and the layer of maximum production, depends on meteorological conditions. A shift in the dominance of congeneric or related species can occur in consecutive years. In Lake La Cruz, mixing conditions and subterranean inflow in spring were much more intense in 1988 than 1987, and the distance between production and decomposition depths was smaller in 1988. Anuraeopsis miraclei, an oxycline-bound species with high abundance in 1987, was displaced by A. fissa in 1988. A. fissa, which was a metalimnetic species during early summer, reached peak densities (3 × 104 ind l–1) at the oxycline, equaling the abundance of A. miraclei the preceeding year.  相似文献

This study investigated the spatiotemporal abundance and diversity of the α-subunit of the dissimilatory sulfite reductase gene (dsrA) in the meromictic Lake Suigetsu for assessing the sulfur-oxidizing bacterial community. The density of dsrA in the chemocline reached up to 3.1 × 106 copies ml?1 in summer by means of quantitative real-time PCR and it was generally higher than deeper layers. Most of the dsrA clones sequenced were related to green sulfur bacteria such as Chlorobium phaeovibrioides, C. limicola, and C. luteolum. Below the chemocline of the lake, we also detected other dsrA clones related to the purple sulfur bacterium Halochromatium salexigens and some branching lineages of diverse sequences that were related to chemotrophic sulfur bacterial species such as Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense, Candidatus Ruthia magnifica, and Candidatus Thiobios zoothamnicoli. The abundance and community compositions of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria changed depending on the water depth and season. This study indicated that the green sulfur bacteria dominated among sulfur-oxidizing bacterial population in the chemocline of Lake Suigetsu and that certain abiotic environmental variables were important factors that determined sulfur bacterial abundance and community structure.  相似文献

The vertical distributions of planktonic bacteria, chroococcoid cyanobacteria, and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) were examined in Lake Toya, an oligotrophic lake located in Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, at monthly intervals from May 1993 to May 1994. The abundances of bacteria, cyanobacteria, and HNF during the study period ranged from 104 to 105,102 to 104, 10 to 102 cells ml−1, respectively. The range of bacterial abundances was among the lowest previously reported from other oligotrophic lakes. The vertical distributions of both bacteria and cyanobacteria were influenced by thermal stratification: they were homogeneous throughout the water column during the circulation period (January to April) and heterogeneous during the period of stratification (June to November). During the period of stratification, the cyanobacterial abundance decreased toward the surface in the euphotic zone while the frequency of diving cells (FDC) increased, suggesting that grazing pressure was high near the surface. This hypothesis was supported by the relatively high abundance of HNF at the surface and the negative correlation between HNF and cyanobacterial abundances in the euphotic zone (r = −0.503, n = 33, P < 0.05). On the other hand, multiple regression analysis revealed that 52% of the variation in bacterial abundance in the stratified period can be explained by chlorophyll a concentration, water temperature, and HNF abundance (df = 3, 45; F = 16.2; P < 0.01), suggesting that both substrate limitation and grazing loss by HNF were important factors controlling bacterial abundance in the lake. Microbial sulfate reduction in a brackish meromictic steppe lake   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Patterns of sulfate reduction were studied in water and sediments of Lake Shira, South Siberia, Russia. The lake was characterized by a high level of sulfate (91-116 mM). The concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the anoxic waters of the lake reached 0.6 mM. In summer the sulfate reduction rate in the water column, measured by radiometric technique, varied from 0.25 to 9.81 mol sulfate l-1 d-1. There were two peaks of sulfate reduction activity: just below the chemocline and near the sediment surface. Sulfate reduction rate in the profundal silts ranged from 4.1 to 90.6 mol l-1 d-1. The zone of the most active sulfate reduction was restricted to the surface sediment layers. The acceleration of sulfate reduction rate (up to 236 mol l-1 d-1) and the increase of density of viable sulfate reducers (up to 2 x 105 cells ml-1) were recorded in the littoral sediments adjacent to the mouth of the Son River and sewage discharge. It was apparently caused by the input of allochthonous organic substrates and also by a high environmental temperature. On an areal basis, sulfate reduction rate in the water was approximately 8 times higher than that in the profundal sediments. Sulfate reduction was the most important process of anaerobic oxidation of organic carbon in Lake Shira. In summer in the profundal zone of the lake, sulfate reducers were able to mineralize about 67% of the daily integrated primary production of phototrophic and chemotrophic organisms.  相似文献

We investigated the distribution of chloropigments in a small meromictic lake, Lake Kaiike, south-west Japan. In the water-column, concentrations of Chl a related to cyanobacteria, BChl a related to purple sulphur bacteria, and three types of BChl e homologues (BChls e1, e2 and e3) related to brown-coloured green sulphur bacteria, were maximal at the redox boundary. Below the redox boundary, absolute concentrations of Chl a and BChl a gradually decreased with depth, whereas BChls e remained rather constant. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) at the deeper region of the anoxic water-column was enriched in highly alkylated BChl e homologues compared with SPM at the redox boundary. The shift in the relative content of highly alkylated BChl e homologues beneath the boundary was associated with community related adaptation of brown-coloured green sulphur bacteria to changes in light quality/quantity, resulting from the optical absorption and reflectance of SPMs in the overlying water-column. Benthic microbial mats were characterized by high abundances of BChls e, in which highly alkylated homologues were substantially abundant. This suggests that the BChls e in the microbial mat may be derived from the low-light adapted brown-coloured green sulphur bacteria forming the bacterial mat.  相似文献
