Pohlia andrewsii J. Shaw in the U.S.S.R.

Abstract

P. andrewsii appears to be widespread in the arctic regions of the U.S.S.R. and also in mountains of southern Siberia, the Altai Mountains. Except in the mountains of Central and Northern Europe the range of P. andrewsii does not overlap with P. annotina and P. camptotrachela.

Immunological studies of Fe-containing superoxide dismutase (FeSOD) and glutamine synthetase (GS) have established a close relationship betweenOceanospirillum linum (the type species of the genus),O. beijerinckii, Alteromonas communis, A. vaga, and two unnamed species of marine bacteria (groups H-1 and I-1). The four latter species have, consequently, been assigned to the genusOceanospirillum asO. commune comb. nov.,O. vagum comb. nov.,O. kriegii sp. nov. (group H-1; type strain 197, ATCC 27133), andO. jannaschii sp. nov. (group I-1; type strain 207, ATCC 27135). The phenotypic properties of these species are presented together with their distinguishing traits.

Abstract

On 23 February 1979 Sir Robert Falla collapsed and died at his home in Eastbourne. He was 77. His sudden death came as a great shock to his multitude of friends and colleagues, many of whom were still sharing with Sir Robert a deep sense of loss at the death on 31 May 1978, shortly after the couple's golden wedding anniversary, of his charming wife Molly.     

Plagiochila atlantica F. Rose,sp. nov.—P. amhagiosa auct.

Abstract

The Irish plant which, following Mitten, has commonly been referred to as Plagiochila ambagiosa Mitt. is specifically different from the type of P. ambagiosa, and is therefore described as Plagiochila atlantica F. Rose, sp. nov. It is now known from very restricted areas in Western Ireland, Western Scotland and North-western France.

PHYCOLOGICAL NOTES. H. EUGLENA MYXOCYLINDRACEA SP. NOV.12

A previously undescribed species of Euglena, E. myxocylindracea, sp. nov., is described from soil in a garden and in a while pine woods in Pike County, Pa. In addition to the, type, an organism (No. 457) in the Culture Collection of Algae. Indiana University, hitherto designated E. viridis var. terricola. is transferred to E. myxocylindracea as var. terricola. Differences such as the usual absence of an emergent flagellum, or the presence of an extremely short one (ca. 3.5–4 μ), and the dominance of a palmelloid state in a variety of liquid and solid culture media in which the cells secrete dichotomously branching slimy cylinders distinguish the new species from E. viridis.     

Studies of metal-sugar complexes in the solid state by the 13C-n.m.r. c.p.-m.a.s. method

Several metal-sugar conjugates have been prepared. Chelate coordination complexes of copper(II) and zinc(II) were prepared from salicylaldimine ligands derived from combinations of methyl 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-2-amino-2-deoxy-β-d-glucopyranoside or 1,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-2-amino-2-deoxy-β-d-glucopyranose and salicylaldehyde. Similar Schiff's bases were prepared from chitosan and complexed to copper(II). Cross-polarisation-magic angle spinning ¹³C-n.m.r. spectroscopy showed that paramagnetic ions have profound effects on the resolution obtainable and, at high concentration, result in broad, featureless spectra. In contrast, diamagnetic ions have little effect on the isotropic chemical shifts of the sugar chelates.

Elatostema densistriolatum sp. nov., E. latistipulum sp. nov. and E. cyrtandrifolium var. hirsutum var. nov. (Urticaceae) from southwest China

Two new species and one new variety of Elatostema J. R. Forst. & G. Forst. (Urticaceae) are described from Yunnan and Xizang, China. Habitat details and morphological comparison with similar species are given and discussed. The new taxa proposed are: Elatostema densistriolatum W. T. Wang & Zeng. Y. Wu, E. latistipulum W. T. Wang & Zeng Y. Wu and E. cyrtandrifolium (Zoll. & Mor.) Miq. var. hirsutum W. T. Wang & Zeng Y. Wu.     

Phylogenetic classification of ten novel species belonging to the genus Bifidobacterium comprising B. phasiani sp. nov., B. pongonis sp. nov., B. saguinibicoloris sp. nov., B. colobi sp. nov., B. simiiventris sp. nov., B. santillanense sp. nov., B. miconis sp. nov., B. amazonense sp. nov., B. pluvialisilvae sp. nov., and B. miconisargentati sp. nov

Ten Bifidobacterium strains, i.e., 6T3, 64T4, 79T10, 80T4, 81T8, 82T1, 82T10, 82T18, 82T24, and 82T25, were isolated from mantled guereza (Colobus guereza), Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abeli), silvery marmoset (Mico argentatus), golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), pied tamarin (Saguinus bicolor), and common pheasant (Phaisanus colchinus). Cells are Gram-positive, non-motile, non-sporulating, facultative anaerobic, and fructose 6-phosphate phosphoketolase-positive. Phylogenetic analyses based on the core genome sequences revealed that isolated strains exhibit close phylogenetic relatedness with Bifidobacterium genus members belonging to the Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium pullorum, and Bifidobacterium tissieri phylogenetic groups. Phenotypic characterization and genotyping based on the genome sequences clearly show that these strains are distinct from each of the type strains of the so far recognized Bifidobacterium species. Thus, B. phasiani sp. nov. (6T3 = LMG 32224^T = DSM 112544^T), B. pongonis sp. nov. (64T4 = LMG 32281^T = DSM 112547^T), B. saguinibicoloris sp. nov. (79T10 = LMG 32232^T = DSM 112543^T), B. colobi sp. nov. (80T4 = LMG 32225^T = DSM 112552^T), B. simiiventris sp. nov. (81T8 = LMG 32226^T = DSM 112549^T), B. santillanense sp. nov. (82T1 = LMG 32284^T = DSM 112550^T), B. miconis sp. nov. (82T10 = LMG 32282^T = DSM 112551^T), B. amazonense sp. nov. (82T18 = LMG 32297^T = DSM 112548^T), pluvialisilvae sp. nov. (82T24 = LMG 32229^T = DSM 112545^T), and B. miconisargentati sp. nov. (82T25 = LMG 32283^T = DSM 112546^T) are proposed as novel Bifidobacterium species.     

Riccia rhenana Lorb. ex. K.Mill. in Britain

Abstract

A single, small moss leaf has been found among very small amounts of contents extracted from the Tyrolean Iceman's colon. It belongs to the species Neckera complanata Hedw., a woodland moss of low to moderate altitudes. The leaf was accidently ingested and not consumed as food.

Abstract

Two little known species of Cheilolejeunea, C. microscypha (Hook.f. & Taylor) M.Wigginton, comb. nov. (a reinstated St Helena liverwort), and C. rotalis (Hook.f. & Taylor) M.Wigginton comb. nov., endemic to St Helena, South Atlantic Ocean, are described and illustrated, and oil bodies of C. ascensionis (Hook.f. & Taylor) Grolle are newly described and illustrated.     

Minuartia aksoyi sp. nov. and M. buschiana subsp. artvinica subsp. nov. (Caryophyllaceae) from Turkey

Two new taxa of Minuartia L. (Caryophyllaceae) from Turkey, Minuartia aksoyi M. Koç & Hamzao?lu sp. nov. and Minuartia buschiana Schischk. subsp. artvinica M. Koç & Hamzao?lu subsp. nov. are described and illustrated. Their taxonomic positions are discussed and they are compared with allied taxa. The distributions of the new and closely related taxa are given. Seed structures were examined by SEM.     

Yeasts from U.S.A. soils

Summary Investigations of yeasts from 38 U.S.A. soils samples show the occurrence of 22 different species (16 sporogenous and 6 asporogenous).The most widespread species were Pichia fermentans and Hansenula anomala. The other isolated species were Saccharomyces ellipsoideus, Torulaspora delbrueckii, Pichia membranefaciens, Saccharomyces smittii, Saccharomyces carlsbergensis, Saccharomyces uvarum, Torulaspora rosei, Zygosaccharomyces rouxii, Zygosaccharomyces n. sp., Hansenula saturnus, Hansenula californica, Hansenula n. sp., Hansenula suaveolens, Debaryomyces n. sp., Torulopsis glabrata, Torulopsis n. sp. Candida tropicalis, Candida robusta, Rhodotorula glutinis, Trichosporon cutaneum and Trichosporon cutaneum var. multisporus.     

C.P.-M.A.S. 13C-N.M.R. study of some solid-state inclusion complexes of cyclomalto-oligosaccharides with para-substituted benzenes

Cross polarisation—magic-angle sample spinning ¹³C-n.m.r. spectral have been measured in the solid state for p-nitrophenol, p-iodophenol, and their inclusion complexes with cyclomaltohexaose, cyclomaltoheptaose, and methylated cyclomaltohexaose. Analysis of the line-shapes of the resonances and the dipolar-dephasing experiments indicate that the guest molecules undergo motion in the host cavities, whereas the host molecules are almost static. The mode and rate of guest motion depend on the size of the cavity.

Validation of Hygrohypnum Lindb. sect. Dilatatae Szafr.

Abstract

A number of chemical habitat parameters for the species Scorpidium scorpioides, S. cossonii and S. revolvens were investigated in three areas in northern and southern Sweden. S. revolvens occurs in a much narrower range of some parameters, especially pH and conductivity, than the other two species. When pH and conductivity are considered together, S. revolvens and S. cossonii are almost completely mutually exclusive.     

Opalinidae in African Anura. II. Genera Protozelleriella n. g. and Zelleriella

During 1988 and 1989, 409 specimens of southern African Anura, comprising 50 species in 9 families, were checked for opalinids in the cloaca. Protozelleriella devilliersi n. g., n. sp. was found in three of four Capensibufo rosei (Bufonidae); Zelleriella africana Sandon, 1938 in two of three Bufo angusticeps and one of 20 B. garmani (Bufonidae) plus three of 12 Phrynobatrachus natalensis, 12 of 19 Tomopterna cryptotis, seven of 14 T. delalandii, three of seven T. krugerensis and one of six T. natalensis (all Ranidae); Z. gambieri n. sp. in one of six T. natalensis; Z. garlandi n. sp. in two of six Kassina maculata (Hyperoliidae); Z. sandoni n. sp. in two of 20 B. garmani, two of six K. maculata, one of seven K. senegalensis and one of four Leptopelis mossambicus (Hyperoliidae) plus one of five Phrynomerus bifasciatus (Microhylidae) and two of 19 T. cryptotis. It is suggested that the Ranidae (in particular the genus Tomopterna) and the Hyperoliidae are among the major carriers of Zelleriella in the Afrotropical Region.
