Numerous techniques have been employed to monitor humeral head translation due to its involvement with several shoulder pathologies. However, most of the techniques were not validated. The objective of this study is to compare the accuracy of manual digitization and contour registration in measuring superior translation of the humeral head. Eight pairs of cadaver scapulae and humerii bones were harvested for this study. Each scapula and humerus was secured in a customized jig that allowed for control of humeral head translations and a vise that permitted rotations of the scapula about three axes. Fluoroscopy was used to take images of the shoulder bones. Scapular orientation was manipulated in different positions while the humerus was at 90° of humeral elevation in the scapular plane. Humeral head translation was measured using the two methods and was compared to the known translation. Additionally, accuracy of the contour registration method to measure 2-D scapular rotations was assessed. The range for the root mean square (RMS) error for manual digitization method was 0.27 mm - 0.43 mm and the contour registration method had a RMS error ranging from 0.18 mm - 0.40 mm. In addition, the RMS error for the scapular angle rotation using the contour registration method was 2.4°. Both methods showed acceptable errors. However, on average, the contour registration method showed lesser measurement error compared to the manual digitization method. In addition, the contour registration method was able to show good accuracy in measuring rotation that is useful in 2-D image analysis.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were: To investigate computer-assisted digital radiographic measurement of Cobb angles in dogs with congenital thoracic vertebral malformations, to determine its intra- and inter-observer reliability and its association with the presence of neurological deficits. Medical records were reviewed (2009–2013) to identify brachycephalic screw-tailed dog breeds with radiographic studies of the thoracic vertebral column and with at least one vertebral malformation present. Twenty-eight dogs were included in the study. The end vertebrae were defined as the cranial end plate of the vertebra cranial to the malformed vertebra and the caudal end plate of the vertebra caudal to the malformed vertebra. Three observers performed the measurements twice. Intraclass correlation coefficients were used to calculate the intra- and inter-observer reliabilities. The intraclass correlation coefficient was excellent for all intra- and inter-observer measurements using this method. There was a significant difference in the kyphotic Cobb angle between dogs with and without associated neurological deficits. The majority of dogs with neurological deficits had a kyphotic Cobb angle higher than 35°. No significant difference in the scoliotic Cobb angle was observed. We concluded that the computer assisted digital radiographic measurement of the Cobb angle for kyphosis and scoliosis is a valid, reproducible and reliable method to quantify the degree of spinal curvature in brachycephalic screw-tailed dog breeds with congenital thoracic vertebral malformations.  相似文献

The height of the medial longitudinal arch (MLA) is thought to be a predisposing factor to various lower extremity injuries. Discrepancy exists as to whether MLA height plays a role in injury prevention. The purpose of this study was to determine the intertester and intratester reliability, and the validity of the mirrored foot photo box (MFPB) and caliper measurements to radiographic measurements. METHODS: Thirty subjects with equal numbers of men and women were recruited. Both feet were tested (n=60) in a 90% weight bearing stance. A set of anatomic landmarks were palpated, marked, and measured using a caliper, MFPB, and radiographs. The protocol was completed by two testers on 2 days approximately 1 week apart. Intertester and intratester reliability were determined using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)(2,k) and the ICC(2,1), respectively. Validity of both measurement techniques to radiographic measurements was determined using the ICC(2,k). RESULTS: The intertester reliability ranged from 0.991 to 0.577, while the intratester reliability ranged from 0.994 to 0.527, with first metatarsal angle being the only variable with poor reliability. Most variables demonstrated acceptable validity between the MFPB and the caliper measurements, and acceptable validity between the MFPB and calipers compared to radiographic measurements. The MFPB took 51.3+/-19.6s per foot while the caliper measurements averaged 227.4+/-68.9s to complete the measurements. DISCUSSION: The MFPB is as reliable as the caliper measurements, and offers better intertester reliability. Both the caliper and MFPB measurements demonstrated acceptable validity to radiographic measurements and testing time was reduced when using the MFPB compared to calipers.  相似文献

High resolution strain measurements are of particular interest in load bearing tissues such as the intervertebral disc (IVD), permitting characterization of biomechanical conditions which could lead to injury and degenerative outcomes. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging produces excellent image contrast in cartilaginous tissues, allowing for image-based strain determination. Nonrigid registration (NRR) of MR images has previously demonstrated sub-voxel registration accuracy although its accuracy and precision in determining strain has not been evaluated. Accuracy and precision of NRR-derived strain measurements were evaluated using computer generated deformations applied to both computer generated images and MR images. Two different measures of registration similarity--the cost function which drives the registration algorithm--were compared: Mutual Information (MI) and Least Squares (LS). Strain error was evaluated with respect to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and strain heterogeneity. Additionally, the creep strain response from an in vitro loaded porcine IVD is shown and comparisons between similarity measures are presented. MI showed a decrease in strain precision with increasing CNR and decreasing SNR while LS was insensitive to both. Both similarity measures showed a decrease in strain precision with increasing strain heterogeneity. When computer generated heterogeneous strains were applied to MR images of the IVD, LS showed substantially lower strain error in comparison to MI. Results suggest that LS-driven NRR provides a more accurate image-based method for mapping large and heterogeneous strain fields and this method can be applied to studies of the IVD and, potentially, other soft tissues which present sufficient image texture.  相似文献

Background

More than 1000 scientific papers have been devoted to flatfoot issue. However, a bimodal distribution of flatfoot indices in school-aged children has never been discovered. The purposes of this study were to establish a new classification of flatfoot by characteristic in frequency distribution of footprint index and to endue the classification with discrepancy in physical fitness.

Methods/Principal Findings

In a longitudinal survey of physical fitness and body structure, weight bearing footprints and 3 physical fitness related tests were measured in 1228 school-aged children. Frequency distribution of initial data was tested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality and a unique bimodal distribution of footprint index was identified. The frequency distribution of footprint index manifests two distinct modes, flatfoot and non-flatfoot, by deconvolution and bootstrapping procedures. A constant intersection value of 1.0 in Staheli''s arch index and 0.6 in Chippaux-Smirak index could distinguish the two modes of children, and the value was constant in different age, sex, and weight status. The performance of the one leg balance was inferior in flatfoot girls (median, 4.0 seconds in flatfoot girls vs. 4.3 seconds in non-flatfoot girls, p = 0.04, 95% CI 0.404–0.484).

Discussion

The natural bimodality lends itself to a flatfoot classification. Bimodality suggests development of the child''s foot arch would be a leap from one state to another, rather than a continuous growth as body height and weight. The underlying dynamics of the human foot arch and motor development will trigger research prospects.  相似文献

Measurement of static alignment of articulating joints is of clinical benefit and can be determined using image-based registration. We propose a method that could potentially improve the outcome of image-based registration by using initial manual registration. Magnetic resonance images of two wrist specimens were acquired in the relaxed position and during simulated grasp. Transformations were determined from voxel-based image registration between the two volumes. The volumes were manually aligned to match as closely as possible before auto-registration, from which standard transformations were obtained. Then, translation/rotation perturbations were applied to the manual registration to obtain altered initial positions, from which altered auto-registration transformations were obtained. Models of the radiolunate joint were also constructed from the images to simulate joint contact mechanics. We compared the sensitivity of transformations (translations and rotations) and contact mechanics to altering the initial registration condition from the defined standard. We observed that with increasing perturbation, transformation errors appeared to increase and values for contact force and contact area appeared to decrease. Based on these preliminary findings, it appears that the final registration outcome is sensitive to the initial registration.  相似文献

The symptomatic flatfoot deformity (pes planus with peri-talar subluxation) can be a debilitating condition. Cadaveric flatfoot models have been employed to study the etiology of the deformity, as well as invasive and noninvasive surgical treatment strategies, by evaluating bone positions. Prior cadaveric flatfoot simulators, however, have not leveraged industrial robotic technologies, which provide several advantages as compared with the previously developed custom fabricated devices. Utilizing a robotic device allows the researcher to experimentally evaluate the flatfoot model at many static instants in the gait cycle, compared with most studies, which model only one to a maximum of three instances. Furthermore, the cadaveric tibia can be statically positioned with more degrees of freedom and with a greater accuracy, and then a custom device typically allows. We created a six degree of freedom robotic cadaveric simulator and used it with a flatfoot model to quantify static bone positions at ten discrete instants over the stance phase of gait. In vivo tibial gait kinematics and ground reaction forces were averaged from ten flatfoot subjects. A fresh frozen cadaveric lower limb was dissected and mounted in the robotic gait simulator (RGS). Biomechanically realistic extrinsic tendon forces, tibial kinematics, and vertical ground reaction forces were applied to the limb. In vitro bone angular position of the tibia, calcaneus, talus, navicular, medial cuneiform, and first metatarsal were recorded between 0% and 90% of stance phase at discrete 10% increments using a retroreflective six-camera motion analysis system. The foot was conditioned flat through ligament attenuation and axial cyclic loading. Post-flat testing was repeated to study the pes planus deformity. Comparison was then made between the pre-flat and post-flat conditions. The RGS was able to recreate ten gait positions of the in vivo pes planus subjects in static increments. The in vitro vertical ground reaction force was within ± 1 standard deviation (SD) of the in vivo data. The in vitro sagittal, coronal, and transverse plane tibial kinematics were almost entirely within ± 1 SD of the in vivo data. The model showed changes consistent with the flexible flatfoot pathology including the collapse of the medial arch and abduction of the forefoot, despite unexpected hindfoot inversion. Unlike previous static flatfoot models that use simplified tibial degrees of freedom to characterize only the midpoint of the stance phase or at most three gait positions, our simulator represented the stance phase of gait with ten discrete positions and with six tibial degrees of freedom. This system has the potential to replicate foot function to permit both noninvasive and surgical treatment evaluations throughout the stance phase of gait, perhaps eliciting unknown advantages or disadvantages of these treatments at other points in the gait cycle.  相似文献

Image registration, the process of transforming images such that homologous structures optimally overlap, provides the pre-processing foundation for pixel-level functional image analysis. The purpose of this study was to compare the performances of seven methods of within-subjects pedobarographic image registration: (1) manual, (2) principal axes, (3) centre of pressure trajectory, (4) mean squared error, (5) probability-weighted variance, (6) mutual information, and (7) exclusive OR. We assumed that foot-contact geometry changes were negligibly small trial-to-trial and thus that a rigid-body transformation could yield optimum registration performance. Thirty image pairs were randomly selected from our laboratory database and were registered using each method. To compensate for inter-rater variability, the mean registration parameters across 10 raters were taken as representative of manual registration. Registration performance was assessed using four dissimilarity metrics (#4-7 above). One-way MANOVA found significant differences between the methods (p<0.001). Bonferroni post-hoc tests revealed that the centre of pressure method performed the poorest (p<0.001) and that the principal axes method tended to perform more poorly than remaining methods (p<0.070). Average manual registration was not different from the remaining methods (p=1.000). The results suggest that a variety of linear registration methods are appropriate for within-subjects pedobarographic images, and that manual image registration is a viable alternative to algorithmic registration when parameters are averaged across raters. The latter finding, in particular, may be useful for cases of image peculiarities resulting from outlier trials or from experimental manipulations that induce substantial changes in contact area or pressure profile geometry.  相似文献

This study concerns secular changes of the foot of Japanese, from the prehistoric Jomon period to early modern times. The size of the talus, calcaneus and first metatarsal changed in parallel with the estimated stature, during this period. In the case of the calcanues, length-height-index, length-tuberosity height-index, Böhler's tuber-joint angle and angle of cuboidal articular surface gradually increased with time. Thus, all may take part in elevation of the longitudinal arch. With time, the relative height of the subtalar, talonavicular, cuneonavicular and first tarsometatarsal joints in the reconstructed medial arch enlarged, in parallel with the increase in the inclination angles of both the calcaneus and the first metatarsal. In addition, valgus deviation of the distal phalanx of the great toe became conspicuous in comparatively recent times. These changes no doubt were accelerated by modification in life style.  相似文献

We present a new method for magnetization transfer (MT) ratio imaging in the brain that requires no separate saturation pulse. Interslice MT effects that are inherent to multi-slice balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) imaging were controlled via an interslice delay time to generate MT-weighted (0 s delay) and reference images (5–8 s delay) for MT ratio (MTR) imaging of the brain. The effects of varying flip angle and phase encoding (PE) order were investigated experimentally in normal, healthy subjects. Values of up to ∼50% and ∼40% were observed for white and gray matter MTR. Centric PE showed larger MTR, higher SNR, and better contrast between white and gray matter than linear PE. Simulations of a two-pool model of MT agreed well with in vivo MTR values. Simulations were also used to investigate the effects of varying acquisition parameters, and the effects of varying flip angle, PE steps, and interslice delay are discussed. Lastly, we demonstrated reduced banding with a non-balanced SSFP-FID sequence and showed preliminary results of interslice MTR imaging of meningioma.  相似文献

Conventional radiography is insensitive for early and accurate estimation of the mal-alignment and wear of knee prostheses. The two-staged (rough and fine) registration of the model-based RSA technique has recently been developed to in vivo estimate the prosthetic pose (i.e, location and orientation). In the literature, rough registration often uses template match or manual adjustment of the roentgen images. Additionally, possible error induced by the nonorthogonality of taking two roentgen images neither examined nor calibrated prior to fine registration. This study developed two RSA methods for automate the estimation of the prosthetic pose and decrease the nonorthogonality-induced error. The predicted results were validated by both simulative and experimental tests and compared with reported findings in the literature. The outcome revealed that the feature-recognized method automates pose estimation and significantly increases the execution efficiency up to about 50 times in comparison with the literature counterparts. Although the nonorthogonal images resulted in undesirable errors, the outline-optimized method can effectively compensate for the induced errors prior to fine registration. The superiority in automation, efficiency, and accuracy demonstrated the clinical practicability of the two proposed methods especially for the numerous fluoroscopic images of dynamic motion.  相似文献

Mutual information (MI)-based registration, which uses MI as the similarity measure, is a representative method in medical image registration. It has an excellent robustness and accuracy, but with the disadvantages of a large amount of calculation and a long processing time. In this paper, by computing the medical image moments, the centroid is acquired. By applying fuzzy c-means clustering, the coordinates of the medical image are divided into two clusters to fit a straight line, and the rotation angles of the reference and floating images are computed, respectively. Thereby, the initial values for registering the images are determined. When searching the optimal geometric transformation parameters, we put forward the two new concepts of fuzzy distance and fuzzy signal-to-noise ratio (FSNR), and we select FSNR as the similarity measure between the reference and floating images. In the experiments, the Simplex method is chosen as multi-parameter optimisation. The experimental results show that this proposed method has a simple implementation, a low computational cost, a fast registration and good registration accuracy. Moreover, it can effectively avoid trapping into the local optima. It is adapted to both mono-modality and multi-modality image registrations.  相似文献

After a myocardial infarction (MI), an episode of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) can result in a greater impairment of left ventricular (LV) regional function (LVRF) than that caused by an initial I/R episode in the absence of MI. Membrane type-I matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) proteolytically processes the myocardial matrix and is upregulated in LV failure. This study tested the central hypothesis that a differential induction of MT1-MMP occurs and is related to LVRF after I/R in the context of a previous MI. Pigs with a previous MI [3 wk postligation of the left circumflex artery (LCx)] or no MI were randomized to undergo I/R [60-min/120-min left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) occlusion] or no I/R as follows: no MI and no I/R (n = 6), no MI and I/R (n = 8), MI and no I/R (n = 8), and MI and I/R (n = 8). Baseline LVRF (regional stroke work, sonomicrometry) was lower in the LAD region in the MI group compared with no MI (103 ± 12 vs. 188 ± 26 mmHg·mm, P < 0.05) and remained lower with peak ischemia (35 ± 8 vs. 88 ± 17 mmHg·mm, P < 0.05). Using a novel interstitial microdialysis method, MT1-MMP was directly measured and was over threefold higher in the LCx region and over twofold higher in the LAD region in the MI group compared with the no MI group at baseline. MT1-MMP fluorogenic activity was persistently elevated in the LCx region in the MI and I/R group but remained unchanged in the LAD region. In contrast, no changes in MT1-MMP occurred in the LCx region in the no MI and I/R group but increased in the LAD region. MT1-MMP mRNA was increased by over threefold in the MI region in the MI and I/R group. In conclusion, these findings demonstrate that a heterogeneous response in MT1-MMP activity likely contributes to regional dysfunction with I/R and that a subsequent episode of I/R activates a proteolytic cascade within the MI region that may contribute to a continued adverse remodeling process.  相似文献

The measurement of the spatial profile of root elongation needs to determine matching points between time-lapse images and calculate their displacement. These data have been obtained by laborious manual methods in the past. Some computer-based programs have been developed to improve the measurement, but they require many time-series digital images or sprinkling graphite particles on the root prior to image capture. Here, we have developed GrowthTracer, a new image-analysis program for the kinematic study of root elongation. GrowthTracer employs a multiresolution image matching method with a nonlinear filter called the critical point filter (CPF), which extracts critical points from images at each resolution and can determine precise matching points by analysis of only two intact images, without pre-marking by graphite particles. This program calculates the displacement of each matching point and determines the displacement velocity profile along the medial axis of the root. In addition, a manual input of distinct matching points increases the matching accuracy. We show a successful application of this novel program for the kinematic analysis of root growth in Arabidopsis thaliana.  相似文献

Aurora B kinase phosphorylates kinetochore proteins during early mitosis, increasing kinetochore–microtubule (MT) turnover and preventing premature stabilization of kinetochore–MT attachments. Phosphorylation of kinetochore proteins during late mitosis is low, promoting attachment stabilization, which is required for anaphase onset. The kinetochore protein KNL1 recruits Aurora B–counteracting phosphatases and the Aurora B–targeting factor Bub1, yet the consequences of KNL1 depletion on Aurora B phospho-regulation remain unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the KNL1 N terminus is essential for Aurora B activity at kinetochores. This region of KNL1 is also required for Bub1 kinase activity at kinetochores, suggesting that KNL1 promotes Aurora B activity through Bub1-mediated Aurora B targeting. However, ectopic targeting of Aurora B to kinetochores does not fully rescue Aurora B activity in KNL1-depleted cells, suggesting KNL1 influences Aurora B activity through an additional pathway. Our findings establish KNL1 as a requirement for Aurora B activity at kinetochores and for wild-type kinetochore–MT attachment dynamics.  相似文献

Purpose

Modern specular microscopes (SM) robustly depict the same central area of the corneal endothelium at different time points through a built-in fixation light. However, repeated image acquisitions slightly shift and rotate because of minute changes in head position in the chin and forehead rest. This prevents the manual retrieval of individual corneal endothelial cells (CECs) in repeated measurements because SM images usually lack obvious landmarks. We devised and validated an image registration algorithm that aligns SM images from the same eye to make corresponding CECs coincide.

Methods

We retrospectively selected 27 image pairs for the presence of significant image overlap. Each image pair had been recorded on the same day and of the same eye. We applied our registration method in each image pair. Two observers independently validated, by means of alternation flicker, that the image pairs had been correctly aligned. We also repeatedly applied our registration method on unrelated image pairs by randomly drawing images and making certain that the images did not originate from the same eye. This was done to assess the specifity of our method.

Results

All automated registrations of the same-day and same-eye image pairs were accurate. However, one single image incorrectly failed to trigger the non-match diagnosis twice in 81 registration attempts between unrelated images. As it turned out, this particular image depicted only 73 CECs. The average number of CECs was 253 (range 73–393).

Conclusion

Repeated non-contact SM images can be automatedly aligned so that the corresponding CECs coincide. Any successful alignment can be considered as proof of the retrieval of identical CECs as soon as at least 100 CEC centroids have been identified. We believe our method is the first to robustly confirm endothelial stability in individual eyes.  相似文献

Clinically in medializing calcaneal osteotomy (MCO), foot and ankle surgeons are facing difficulties in choosing appropriate surgical parameters due to the individual differences in deformities among flatfoot patients. Traditional cadaveric studies have provided important information regarding the biomechanical effects of tendons, ligaments, and plantar fascia, but limitations have been reached when dealing with individual differences and tailoring patient-specific surgeries. Therefore, this study aimed at implementing the finite element (FE) method to investigate the effect of different MCO parameters to help foot and ankle surgeons performing patient-specific surgeries. This study constructed FE models of a flatfoot and a healthy foot based on computed tomography (CT) images. After validating the FE models with experimental measurements, differences in plantar stress were compared between two models and a criterion was established for evaluating the performance of surgical simulations. Four MCO parameters were then studied through FE simulations. Results suggested that the transverse angle, β, and translation distance, d, affected surgical performance. Therefore, special attentions may be recommended when choosing these two parameters clinically. However, the sagittal angle, α, and osteotomy position, p, were found to have less effect on the MCO performance.  相似文献

The arterial supply of 100 human cadaver feet (87 cadavers) was investigated by stereoscopic arteriography and was compared phylogenetically to that of the macaque foot. The deep plantar arch was always well developed and complete, whereas the superficial plantar arch was usually slender and incomplete. The first proximal perforating artery arising from the dorsalis pedis artery formed the main component of the deep plantar arch in 82% of the feet. The second proximal perforating artery arising from the dorsal rete contributed to the deep plantar arch in 43% of the feet, and formed most of the arch in one foot. The dorsal rete was classified into four groups of variants based on the arterial source of the second dorsal metatarsal artery. These were the arcuate artery (25%), distal lateral tarsal artery (12%), proximal lateral tarsal artery (6%), and nondorsal rete (57%) variants. In the first intermetatarsal space, the dorsal and plantar metatarsal arteries shared a common trunk in 54% of the feet, but this did not occur in the other intermetatarsal spaces. The second dorsal metatarsal artery arose from the dorsal rete in 43% of the feet, and this artery was quite large, sometimes being the largest of all the dorsal and plantar metatarsal arteries. Variations of the arterial supply found in humans sometimes resembled the typical pattern found in the macaque.  相似文献
