The effect of thermal acclimation for 15 days on the gametogenesis of Poecilobdella viridis was studied. Leeches conditioned at laboratory temperature (25.5°–27.5°C), when warm acclimated (32.0° ± 0.5° C), displayed a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the percentage of oocytes having a diameter of 12.5 µ and 15.0 µ and in the percentage of fully mature sperm clusters over the controls, whereas cold acclimation (10.0° ± 0.5°C) did not induce significant (p > 0.05) changes in the oocytes and sperm clusters. Thus it is concluded that in P. viridis temperature is of paramount importance in initiating gametogenesis. 相似文献

Annual reproductive cycle of the protandrous hermaphroditic freshwater leech, Poecilobdella viridis has been traced from August 1974 to July 1975. Spermatogenesis initiated a little earlier than oogenesis. The reproductive programme is as follows; commencement of spermatogenesis in February followed by oogenesis in March. Breeding begins in late March extending upto late May and early June while breeding terminated towards late June. From August to January reproductive quiescence was observed. Among the environmental factors temperature, possibly coupled with photoperiod, plays a key role in synchronising the reproductive cycle. 相似文献

Ability of the freshwater leech, Poecilobdella viridis to withstand osmotic changes was investigated by following the fluctuations of the body weight in tap-water and in different salt concentrations. The salinity tolerance limit (lethal salt concentration) of this leech was found to be 1.54% NaCl which equilibrates approximately 51.359% sea-water. There was a significant weight loss in P. viridis when kept in both, hypo- and hypertonic media. It is concluded that volume regulation (through weight changes) was slight in hypotonic media whereas in hypertonic media there was an incessant decline in body weight. Adaptive significance of these findings is discussed. 相似文献

The possible role of a brain hormone in oogenesis of Poecilobdella viridis has been investigated by brain extirpation and brain extract injections during non-reproductive (November to January) and reproductive (March to May) periods. Brain extirpation during the non-reproductive period ceased maturation of the ovary. It is inferred that brain secretion bears possibly a gonadotropic principle which governs and regulates the oogenesis during the annual reproductive cycle. 相似文献

The effect of brain homogenate of warm and cold acclimated leeches on the respiration of normal Poecilobdella viridis has been investigated. Homogenate of brain from warm acclimated leeches significantly (p < 0.05) decreased oxygen consumption rates over those of normal homogenate injections. Oxygen uptake values were significantly (p < 0.0 1) enhanced following the administration of brain homogenate of cold acclimated leeches. Hence, existence of two separate oxygen consumption controlling factors, possibly hormones, in the brain of P. viridis during thermal acclimation, is inferred. 相似文献

Annual changes in the brain neurosecretory profile of Poecilobdella viridis in relation to reproductive activity have been investigated. The changes in A cell neurosecretory activities were found to be in strong correlative correspondence with the reproductive programme. Heavy accumulation of neurosecretory material was observed in A cells perikarya during the reproductive period i.e. from March to June, 1975, with enlarged nuclei and during reproductive quiescence i.e. from August, 1974 to January 1975, the neurosecretory activity was low. 相似文献

Leeches maintained either in tap-water or under desiccated conditions show a continuous decline in body-weight. Debrained leeches show a significantly greater loss of weight than unoperated or sham-operated controls. Injections of brain homogenate (0.2 ml/leech = 3 brains/leech) significantly (p<0.01) reduces weight loss in debrained leeches, whereas saline injections are without effect. The results indicate that water (weight) loss is influenced by a neurosecretory hormone secreted by the brain of Poecilobdella viridis. 相似文献

Barbronia weberi were collected from Hydrilla verticillata purchased from aquarium suppliers in Melbourne, Australia and additional B. weberi were obtained from aquatic plants in Canberra, ACT, Australia. Adult leeches fed Tubifex sp. ad libitum successfully reproduced under laboratory conditions (21 ± 5?°C ). Reproductively mature B. weberi produced cocoons every week for up to three months at which time the adults began to senesce. Cocoons contained one to five ( barx=2.41±0.78 SD, N=58) eggs with juveniles leaving the cocoon within 27 ± 3.4 SD days ( N=13) of cocoon production. Juvenile B. weberi reached reproductive maturity within four months ( N=7) of hatching and had a maximum growth rate of 1.10 mm 2 d ?1 once they left the cocoon at around 30 days. Individual egg volume ( r=0.63, scaling exponent = 1.21) and cocoon volume ( r=0.65, scaling exponent = 1.24) showed a significant ( P<0.001) and nearly isometric relationship when scaled with maternal body size. Because this species can grow rapidly and produce a large number of eggs over a short period of time and can piggyback with plant species and travel through the aquarium trade, there is potential for B. weberi to rapidly invade new localities. 相似文献

We investigated the effects of acute and acclimation temperature on the locomotor performance and behavior of the tardigrade Macrobiotus harmsworthi collected from Qinling Mountains in central China. Tardigrades were acclimated to either 10 or 25 °C for 2 weeks. Then we recorded their walking speed, percentage of time moving, and the maximum distance covered by continuous locomotion at either 10 or 25 °C as the rate parameters of locomotor performance. The walking speeds of M. harmsworthi varied from 1.98 to 4.8 mm min –1. The locomotor performance rates were significantly influenced by both acclimation temperature and performance temperature and by the interaction of the performance temperature and acclimation temperature. The data from our studies support the Beneficial Acclimation Hypothesis (BAH) which predicts that animals acclimated to a particular temperature have enhanced performance or fitness at that temperature in comparison with animals acclimated to other temperatures. The data, at least potentially, also support the Warmer is Better Hypothesis which predicts that organisms raised at high temperatures have higher relative fitness across all temperatures than do those raised at intermediate or cool temperatures. Some of the results from our studies testify the inference from the BAH that performance temperature that deviates from the acclimation temperature could cause the reduction of the locomotor performance rate. 相似文献

The temperature dependency of activity of the entire set of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (protein synthetic translases) has been studied in the laboratory rat and in toadfish ( Opsanus tau) acclimated to 20 δC or to 10 δC. The complex temperature responses of these enzyme systems reveal the presence of multiple forms for the translases of most amino acids and show adaptive behavior of these systems with respect to body temperature of the animal. The phenylalanine translase system has been studied in detail, and adaptation of this system at low temperatures correlates with adaptation in the elongation factor system. All known protein synthetic components appear to be coordinated in adaptive responses with the exception of ribosomes. Our data indicate no rôle for ribosomes in adaptation of the protein synthetic system and apparently no rôle for ribosomes in protein synthesis at all in rat and fish. This finding may solve some long-standing paradoxes in the protein synthesis field concerning the mechanism by which ribosomes participate in protein synthesis. 相似文献

1. 1.Rana perezi adult frogs were acclimated to cold (10 ± 2°C) and warm (29 ± 1°C) temperatures for 4 months. 2. 2.After acclimation, a partial compensation of the oxygen consumption of the animals was found because of a reduction of its thermal sensitivity. 3. 3.Activities of liver and lung catalase, selenium (Se)-dependent and Se-independent glutathione peroxidases were not changed by thermal acclimation. 4. 4.Tissue peroxidation (TBA-RS) increased in the liver of heat acclimated animals. 5. 5.Hydroperoxide detoxifying enzyme activities did not show inverse compensation of temperature during acclimation. It is proposed that the pattern of thermal compensation shown by these enzymes in different species depends on a variety of factors including: (a) the thermal sensitivities of hydroperoxide producing and scavenging systems; (b) the changes induced by acclimation in the rate of hydroperoxide generation.

Summary To assess the role of photosynthetic acclimation in the response of tropical understory herbs to treefall light gaps, photosynthetic response curves were determined for three species of herbaceous bamboo growing in treatments of sun and shade at Barro Calorado Island, Panama. Increased maximum photosynthetic capacity did not always accompany higher ramet production in the sun treatment. Pharus latifolius reproduced abundantly in both treatments, and produced more ramets and developed higher maximum photosynthetic capacity under higher irradiance. Streptochaeta spicata also produced a high percentage of reproductive ramets in both treatments and produced more ramets in the sun, did not show any significant differences in photosynthetic parameters between treatments. Streptochaeta sodiroana did not change maximum photosynthetic capacity in the sun, and had higher photosynthetic efficiency and lower mortality in the shade. Stable carbon isotope composition of leaves indicated that all three species developed higher water-use efficiency under higher irradiance. Photosynthetic flexibility may contribute to the ability of P. latifolius to reproduce in treefall gaps, whereas S. spicata and S. sodiroana may maintain the ability to fix carbon efficiently in low irradiance even when growing or persisting in gaps. 相似文献

Abstract. Populations of Marenzelleria viridis in the Chester River (Kent County, Maryland) experience temperatures ranging from over 30°C in summer to near freezing in winter. Interestingly, M. viridis swims actively in winter. This observation led us to examine the relationship between locomotor capacity and temperature in individuals of M. viridis . Juvenile specimens were collected in February ("cold animals") and June ("warm animals"). Video analysis revealed that swimming is achieved by flexing the body in cyclic, helical waves. Wave frequencies were measured as an index of locomotor capacity at 5°C, 15°C, and 25°C. The mean wave frequencies of cold animals were 5.4 Hz at 5°C and 7.1 Hz at 15°C (Q 10= 1.3); the mean wave frequencies of warm animals were 6.1 Hz at 15°C and 7.8 Hz at 25°C (Q 10= 1.3). The effects of changes in water viscosity on wave frequency between 5–25°C were not significant. These results demonstrate that the temperature sensitivity of locomotor capacity in juvenile M. viridis is quite low. We conclude that low temperature sensitivity enables M. viridis to be active throughout the year. 相似文献

In the present contribution the distributive pattern of phosphatases and non-specific esterase amongst the constituents of the leech eye has been revealed and the significance of the enzymatic locales in relation to the visual processes has been discussed. All the phosphatases studied demonstrate absence of the activity in the lens. Activity of the phosphatases, however, is restricted to the plasma membrane and associated cytoplasm to varying degrees. The significance of the phosphatases in the nerve impulses and transmission has been highlightened. The observation of considerable significance relates the demonstration of a high degree of non-specific esterase activity in the lens, which has defied all the phosphatases. Another observation relates to the positive activity of 5-nucleotidase in the group of axons constituting optic nerve. The significance of this observation has also been discussed. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if 6-month acclimation would enable accurate evaluation of hematological, biochemical data, and ECG recorded under restraint for conscious rhesus monkeys of both sexes. Periodic evaluation of these parameters was made during the 6-month period of acclimation. The platelet count, alkaline phosphatase, glucose, and sodium levels significantly decreased, whereas creatinine increased, compared with pre-acclimation values. The heart rate was significantly reduced compared with pre-acclimation values. QT-RR relation followed the square root regression function, which means modification of Bazett's QTc formula can be applied even if the ECG is recorded under restraint. In conclusion, 6-month acclimation was effective for stabilizing the blood data and for allowing accurate evaluation of the ECG even under restraint. Current results show that an acclimation period at least 3 months may be necessary prior to using rhesus monkeys for chronic studies. 相似文献

The influence of desiccation and temperature on the respiratory metabolism of P. viridis have been investigated. There was a significant (p < 0.05) downfall in the respiratory rates as the period of desiccation increased, but for after 18 hours where it was enhanced significantly. The respiration augmented significantly (p < 0.03) when the temperature of the medium increased. Q 10 was significantly high at 32–28°C and was low between 35 and 32°C and 20–10°C Functional significance of these changes to the leeches in combating environmental hazards is briefly discussed. 相似文献
