Anaerobic co-digestion of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) and abattoir wastewater (AW) was investigated using anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBRs). The effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and temperature variations on digesters performances were examined. At both 20 and 10 days biogas production for co-digestion was greater thanks to the improved balance of nutrients. The high specific gas productions for the different digestion processes were 0.56, 0.61 and 0.85 l g−1 total volatile solids (TVS) removal for digesters treating AW, FVW and AW + FVW, respectively. At an HRT of 20 days, biogas production rates from thermophilic digesters were higher on average than from mesophilic AW, FVW and AW + FVW digestion by 28.5, 44.5 and 25%, respectively. However, at 10 days of HRT results showed a decrease of biogas production rate for AW and AW + FVW digestion processes due to the high amount of free ammonia at high organic loading rate (OLR).  相似文献

This study evaluated the feasibility of methane production from fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) obtained from the central food distribution market in Mexico City using an anaerobic digestion (AD) process. Batch systems showed that pH control and nitrogen addition had significant effects on biogas production, methane yield, and volatile solids (VS) removal from the FVW (0.42 m(biogas)(3)/kg VS, 50%, and 80%, respectively). Co-digestion of the FVW with meat residues (MR) enhanced the process performance and was also evaluated in a 30 L AD system. When the system reached stable operation, its methane yield was 0.25 (m(3)/kg TS), and the removal of the organic matter measured as the total chemical demand (tCOD) was 65%. The microbial population (general Bacteria and Archaea) in the 30 L system was also determined and characterized and was closely correlated with its potential function in the AD system.  相似文献

The effect of ultrasound and gamma-irradiation used as pre-treatments for the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge at both mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures was examined. Untreated activated sludge was also subjected to anaerobic digestion at these temperatures as a control. The sonication time was 90 s using a Soniprep 150 (MSE Scientific Instruments) which operated at 23 kHz and had been adjusted to give an output of 47 W and the gamma-irradiation dose was 500 krad. The digesters were operated in a semi-continuous mode, being fed with fresh sludge every 24 h at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 8, 10 and 12 days. Over the 24 h period the differences between the digesters, in terms of volatile solids (VS) reductions and biogas production, were not statistically significant for any particular set of conditions. Thermophilic digestion performed better than mesophilic digestion in terms of biogas production, VS reductions (except at HRT of 8 days) and specific methane yields and the optimum retention time was 10 days, at both temperatures. When gas production over the initial eight hours (probably the hydrolytic stage) was examined, it was found that the gas production rates for pre-treated sludges were higher than those for untreated sludges. This was most pronounced at thermophilic temperatures and a HRT of 10 days. Sonication did not affect the numbers of faecal coliforms in the sludge. However, gamma-radiation caused a 3-log reduction and, when coupled with mesophilic digestion, gave a product which contained < 100 g(-1) TS. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion produced sludges which contained < 1 g(-1) TS irrespective of any pre-treatment.  相似文献

Anaerobic co-digestion of algal sludge and waste paper to produce methane   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The unbalanced nutrients of algal sludge (low C/N ratio) were regarded as an important limitation factor to anaerobic digestion process. Adding high carbon content of waste paper in algal sludge feedstock to have a balanced C/N ratio was undertaken in this study. The results showed adding 50% (based on volatile solid) of waste paper in algal sludge feedstock increased the methane production rate to 1170+/-75 ml/l day, as compared to 573+/-28 ml/l day of algal sludge digestion alone, both operated at 4 g VS/l day, 35 degrees C and 10 days HRT. The maximum methane production rate of 1607+/-17 ml/l day was observed at a combined 5 g VS/l day loading rate with 60% (VS based) of paper adding in algal sludge feedstock. Results suggested an optimum C/N ratio for co-digestion of algal sludge and waste paper was in the range of 20-25/1.  相似文献

This study examines the co-digestion of intermediate landfill leachate and sewage sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Application of leachate as a co-fermentation component increased the concentrations of soluble organic compounds (expressed as total organic carbon), ammonium nitrogen, and alkalinity in the digester influents. The biogas yield obtained from the co-fermentation of a 20:1 sewage sludge: intermediate leachate mixture was 1.30 m3 per kg of removed volatile solids (VS), while that from a 10:1 mixture was 1.24 m3 per kg of removed VS. These values exceeded the biogas yield for the sludge alone by 13% and 8%, respectively. The leachate addition influenced the proportion of methane to a minor extent. Increased methane yields of 16.9% and 6.2% per kg of removed VS were found for the two sewage sluge:intermediate leachate mixtures, respectively.  相似文献

Thermophilic anaerobic hydrogen and methane production by co-digestion of cassava stillage (CS) and excess sludge (ES) was investigated in this study. The improved hydrogen and subsequent methane production were observed by co-digestion of CS with certain amount of ES in batch experiments. Compared with one phase anaerobic digestion, two phase anaerobic digestion offered an attractive alternative with more abundant biogas production and energy yield, e.g., the total energy yield in two phase obtained at VSCS/VSES of 3:1 was 25% higher than the value of one phase. Results from continuous experiments further demonstrated that VSCS/VSES of 3:1 was optimal for hydrogen production with the highest hydrogen yield of 74 mL/g total VS added, the balanced nutrient condition with C/N ratio of 1.5 g carbohydrate-COD/g protein-COD or 11.9 g C/g N might be the main reason for such enhancement. VSCS/VSES of 3:1 was also optimal for continuous methane production considering the higher methane yield of 350 mL/g total VS added and the lower propionate concentration in the effluent.  相似文献

A semi-continuously mixed mesophilic tubular anaerobic digester was tested for the conversion of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) into biogas. The effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and the feed concentration on the extent of the degradation of the waste was examined. Varying the HRT between 12 and 20 days had no effect on the fermentation stability and pH remained between 6.8 and 7.6, but an inhibition of methanogenic bacteria was observed at HRT below 12 days. The overall performance of the reactor was depressed by changing the feed concentration from 8% to 10% TS (dry weight). By applying a feed concentration of 6% and HRT of 20 days in the tubular digester, 75% conversion efficiency of FVW into biogas with a methane content of 64% was achieved.  相似文献

Sequential anaerobic-aerobic digestion was applied to waste activated sludge (WAS) of a full scale wastewater treatment plant. The study was performed with the objective of testing the sequential digestion process on WAS, which is characterized by worse digestibility in comparison with the mixed sludge. Process performance was evaluated in terms of biogas production, volatile solids (VS) and COD reduction, and patterns of biopolymers (proteins and polysaccharides) in the subsequent digestion stages. VS removal efficiency of 40%, in the anaerobic phase, and an additional removal of 26%, in the aerobic one, were observed. For total COD removal efficiencies of 35% and 25% for anaerobic and aerobic stage respectively, were obtained. Kinetics of VS degradation process was analyzed by assuming a first order equation with respect to VS concentration. Evaluated kinetic parameters were 0.44 ± 0.20 d(-1) and 0.25 ± 0.15 d(-1) for the anaerobic stage and aerobic stage, respectively. With regard to biopolymers, in the anaerobic phase the content of proteins and polysaccharides increased to 50% and 69%, respectively, whereas in the subsequent aerobic phase, a decrease of 71% for proteins and 67% for polysaccharides was observed. The average specific biogas production 0.74 m(3)/(kg VS destroyed), was in the range of values reported in the specialized literature for conventional anaerobic mesophilic WAS digestion.  相似文献

A novel reactor configuration was investigated for anaerobic digestion (AD) of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). An anaerobic hyper-thermophilic (68 degrees C) reactor R68 was implemented as a post-treatment step for the effluent of a thermophilic reactor R1 (55 degrees C) in order to enhance hydrolysis of recalcitrant organic matter, improve sanitation and ease the stripping of ammonia from the reactor. The efficiency of the combined system was studied in terms of methane yield, volatile solids (VS) reduction, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) production at different hydraulic retention times (HRT). A single-stage thermophilic (55 degrees C) reactor R2 was used as control. VS reduction and biogas yield of the combined system was 78-89% and 640-790 mL/g VS, respectively. While the VS reduction in the combined system was up to 7% higher than in the single-stage treatment, no increase in methane yield was observed. Shifting the HRT of the hyper-thermophilic reactor from 5 days to 3 days resulted in a drop in the methanogenic activity in the hydrolysis reactor to a minimum. Operation of R68 at HRTs of 24-48 h was sufficient to achieve high VS conversion into VFAs. Removal of pathogens was enhanced by the hyper-thermophilic post-treatment. 7% of the ammonia load was removed in the hyper-thermophilic reactor with a flow of headspace gas through the reactor equivalent to four times the biogas flow produced in reactor R1.  相似文献

Hydrolysis of waste activated sludge (WAS) has been regarded as the rate limiting step of anaerobic sludge digestion. Therefore, in this study, the effect of ultrasound and hydraulic residence time during sludge hydrolysis was investigated with the goal of enhancing methane production from anaerobic digestion (AD). WAS was ultrasonically disintegrated for hydrolysis, and it was semi-continuously fed to an anaerobic digesters at various hydraulic retention times (HRTs). The results of these experiments showed that the solids and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies when using ultrasonically disintegrated sludge were higher during AD than the control sludge. The longer the HRT, the higher the removal efficiencies of solids and COD, while methane production increased with lower HRT. Sludge with 30% hydrolysis produced 7 × more methane production than the control sludge. The highest methane yields were 0.350 m(3)/kg volatile solids (VS)(add) and 0.301 m(3)/kg COD(con) for 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge, respectively. In addition, we found that excess ultrasound irradiation may inhibit AD since the 50% hydrolyzed sludge produced lower methane yields than 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge.  相似文献

In the present study the increase of the organic loading rate from 2.11 to 4.25 kg VS m(-3) d(-1) in a two stage, agricultural biogas plant was investigated. The process enhancement resulted in the doubling of the plant capacity from 500 kW to 1000 kW retaining the same digester volume. Efficiency criteria showed good performance throughout the study. At the end of the monitoring, biogas yield was on the same level as before the enhancement, while volume related biogas productivity almost doubled from 1.50 to 2.91 Nm(3) m(-3) d(-1). However, as a consequence of the higher transfer of poorly degraded organic material into the effluent, the residual methane potential of the effluent multiplied by the factor 10. The results of this study show, that most agricultural biogas plants in Austria have a great potential for a significant capacity increase. However, to avoid atmospheric emissions, the effluent storage of high loaded processes has to be integrated into the gas-tight system of the digesters.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and piggery wastewater, and to identify the key factors governing the co-digestion performance. The analytical results indicated that the food waste contained higher energy potential and lower concentrations of trace elements than the piggery wastewater. Anaerobic co-digestion showed a significantly improved biogas productivity and process stability. The results of co-digestion of the food waste with the different fractions of the piggery wastewater suggested that trace element might be the reason for enhancing the co-digestion performance. By supplementing the trace elements, a long-term anaerobic digestion of the food waste only resulted in a high methane yield of 0.396 m3/kg VSadded and 75.6% of VS destruction with no significant volatile fatty acid accumulation. These results suggested that the typical Korean food waste was deficient with some trace elements required for anaerobic digestion.  相似文献

The kinetics of anaerobic digestion of cane molasses distillery slops was investigated using a continuous-flow bioreactor which contained waste tyre rubber as support, to which the microorganisms became immobilized. Hydraulic retention times (HRT) ranging from 1 to 10 days were investigated at an average influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration of 47.7?g/l. The maximum substrate utilization rate, k, and half saturation coefficient, K L, were determined to be 1.82?kg CODremoved/kg VSS day and 0.33?kg COD/kg VSS day. The yield coefficient, Y, and sludge decay rate coefficient, K d, were also determined to be 0.06?kg VSS/kg CODremoved and 0.05?day-1, respectively. Methane production was maximum (6.75?l/l day) at a 2 day HRT corresponding to a biomass loading rate of 2.578?kg COD/kg VSS day. Biogas yield ranged between 0.51?l/g COD (HRT=2 days) and 0.25?l/g COD (HRT=1?day). In addition, the methane percentage in the biogas varied between 70.5% (HRT=10?days) and 47.5% (HRT=1?day). The close relationship between biomass loading rate and specific substrate utilization rate supported the use of Monod equations. Finally, the experimental values of effluent substrate concentration were reproduced with deviations equal to or less than 10% in every case.  相似文献

Experiences with the dual digestion of municipal sewage sludge   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The dual digestion process was investigated using sludge samples collected at the WWTP of Tomaszow Mazowiecki (Poland). Mixed sludge was treated in a laboratory setup under batch and semi-continuous conditions. Dual digestion with a 1d SRT aerobic thermophilic pretreatment followed by an anaerobic step with 20 d of SRT turned out to be optimal, since a 44-46% VS reduction and a biogas yield of 480 dm(3)/kg VS fed were achieved. In the course of the process, the concentration of nitrogen in supernatant increased over 5 times and its major portion was converted into ammonia. Phosphorus also entered the supernatant, reaching over 200 g/m(3). The dual digestion noticeably deteriorated the sludge dewaterability. Following completion of the process, capillary suction time measurements averaged 64 s for the raw sludge, 400 s for aerobically pretreated sludge and 310-360 for the anaerobically digested sludge. Aerobic pretreatment consistently reduced Enterobacteriaceae content to below detectable limits.  相似文献

Guinea pig is one of the most common livestock in rural communities of the Andes. The aim of this research was to study the anaerobic digestion of guinea pig manure in low-cost unheated tubular digesters at high altitude. To this end, the performance of two pilot digesters was monitored during 7 months; and two greenhouse designs were compared. In the dome roof digester the temperature and biogas production were significantly higher than in the shed roof digester. However, the biogas production rate was low (0.04 m(biogas)(3)m(digester)(-3) d(-1)), which is attributed to the low organic loading rate (0.6 kg(VS)m(digester)(-3)d(-1)) and temperature (23°C) of the system, among other factors. In a preliminary fertilization study, the potato yield per hectare was increased by 100% using the effluent as biofertilizer. Improving manure management techniques, increasing the organic loading rate and co digesting other substrates may be considered to enhance the process.  相似文献

Treatment of simulated wastewater containing 40 mg/l of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) was carried out in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor under methanogenic condition. The performance of this test UASB reactor was evaluated in terms of 4-CP removal. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) and substrate:co-substrate ratio for the 4-CP removal was optimized by varying the influent flow rate (13-34.7 ml/min) and sodium acetate concentration (2-5 g/l), respectively. A control UASB reactor, which was not exposed to 4-CP was also operated under similar conditions. Organic loading rate (OLR) was varied in the range of 2-5.3 kg/m(3)/d and 1.7-4.2 kg/m(3)/d, respectively, for HRT and substrate:co-substrate ratio studies, respectively. The optimum HRT and substrate:co-substrate ratio for the removal of 4-CP was 12h and 1:75, respectively. Removal of 4-CP achieved at optimum HRT and substrate:co-substrate ratio was 88.3+/-0.7%. Removal of 4-CP occurred through dehalogenation and caused increase in chloride ion concentration in the effluent by 0.23-0.27 mg/mg 4-CP removed. The ring cleavage test showed the ortho mode of ring cleavage of 4-CP. Change in the elemental composition of the anaerobic biomass of UASB reactors was observed during the study period. Concentration of Ca(2+) increased in the biomass and this could be attributed to the biosoftening. Specific methanogenic activity of the sludge of control and test UASB reactor was 0.832 g CH(4) COD/g VSS d and 0.694 g CH(4) COD/g VSS d, respectively.  相似文献

Different mixtures were digested in a single-stage, batch, mixed, laboratory scale mesophilic anaerobic digester at the Biomass Research Centre Laboratory (University of Perugia). The yield and the composition of biogas from the different substrates were evaluated and the cumulative curves were estimated. Two experimental campaigns were carried out, the first on three mixtures (chicken, pig and bovine manures), the second on animal and vegetal biomasses (chicken and cow manure, olive husk) with different inocula (rumen fluid and digested sludge). In the first campaign pig manure mixture showed the maximum biogas production (0.35 Nm3/kg) and energy content (1.35 kWh/kg VS); in the second one the differences in produced biogas from the different inocula were analyzed: olive husk with piggery manure anaerobically digested as inoculum showed the higher biogas (0.28 Nm3/kg VS) and methane yield (0.11 Nm3/kg VS), corresponding to an energetic content of 1.07 kWh/kg VS. All data obtained from the laboratory scale anaerobic digester are comparable to the values in literature for several biomass and in particular for olive husk, dairy manure and chicken manure.  相似文献

This work aimed to co-digest various wastes to assess the best combination of all mixing ratio, also at choosing the best ratio between untreated primary sludge (UPS) singly from two sources, (South valley University (SUPS) and Abu tesht wastewater station (AUPS) and raw chicken manure (RCM) and comparing the results in either case. The co-digestions of untreated primary sludge from Abu tesht wastewater treatment stations with different levels of raw chicken manure (0:100, 10:90, 30:70, 50:50, 90:10, and 100:0) to obtain the best mixtures. Also, co-digestion of untreated primary sludge from south valley university with different levels of raw chicken manure at the same ratios, to obtain the best mixtures. Batch digestion tests were applied in 2.5 L digester with a working volume of 2.0 L. The samples in triplicates were separately loaded into the digesters locally fabricated and kept for 20 days as a retention period and diluted with the same amount of water. Mesophilic under 35 °C was adopted for untreated primary sludge as well as mixtures with raw chicken manure based on total solids (TS) and volatile solid (VS) proportions. The average biogas yields from AUPS/RCM mixture obtained ranged from 8570 to 5600 ml, by the following descending order, 10: 90 > 90:10 and so on >100:0, and the average biogas yields from SUPS/RCM obtained ranged from 6330 to 5635 ml, in the order of 90: 10 > 10:90 and so on >100:0. The results showed highest biogas yield from AUPS/RCM and SUPS/RCM mixtures with mixing ratio of 10:90 and 90:10, respectively, however, the lowest biogas production detected in separate digestion of AUPS and SUPS. The results indicated that co-digestion between the sludge and raw chicken manure could increase total biogas production volume, enhance sludge treatment process, and produce eco-friendly sludge because of co-digestion process than separate processing of each feedstock.  相似文献

Anaerobic batch co-digestion of sisal pulp and fish wastes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Co-digestion of various wastes has been shown to improve the digestibility of the materials and biogas yield. Batchwise digestion of sisal pulp and fish waste was studied both with the wastes separately and with mixtures in various proportions. While the highest methane yields from sisal pulp and fish waste alone were 0.32 and 0.39 m3 CH4/kg volatile solids (VS), respectively, at total solid (TS) of 5%, co-digestion with 33% of fish waste and 67% of sisal pulp representing 16.6% of TS gave a methane yield of 0.62 m3 CH4/kg VS added. This is an increase of 59-94% in the methane yield as compared to that obtained from the digestion of pure fractions at 5% TS.  相似文献

Compared to low concentrations of anionic surfactants (AS) in activated sludge process effluents (ASP) (<0.2 mg/L), upflow anaerobic sludge blanket-polishing pond (UASB-PP) effluents were found to contain very high concentrations of AS (>3.5 mg/L). AS (or linear alkylbenzen sulfonate, LAS) removals >99% have been found for ASP while in case of UASB-PP it was found to be < or = 30%. AS concentrations averaged 7347 and 1452 mg/kg dry wt. in wet UASB and dried sludges, respectively. Treated sewage from UASB based sewage treatment plants (STPs) when discharged to aquatic ecosystems are likely to generate substantial risk. Post-treatment using 1-1.6d detention, anaerobic, non-algal polishing ponds was found ineffective. Need of utilizing an aerobic method of post-treatment of UASB effluent in place of an anaerobic one has been emphasized. Natural drying of UASB sludges on sludge drying beds (SDBs) under aerobic conditions results in reduction of adsorbed AS by around 80%. Application of UASB sludges on SDBs was found simple, economical and effective. While disposal of treated UASB effluent may cause risk to aquatic ecosystems, use of dried UASB sludges is not likely to cause risk to terrestrial ecosystems.  相似文献
