A new troodontid theropod dinosaur from the lower Cretaceous of Utah   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Background

The theropod dinosaur family Troodontidae is known from the Upper Jurassic, Lower Cretaceous, and Upper Cretaceous of Asia and from the Upper Jurassic and Upper Cretaceous of North America. Before now no undisputed troodontids from North America have been reported from the Early Cretaceous.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Herein we describe a theropod maxilla from the Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah and perform a phylogenetic analysis to determine its phylogenetic position. The specimen is distinctive enough to assign to a new genus and species, Geminiraptor suarezarum. Phylogenetic analysis places G. suarezarum within Troodontidae in an unresolved polytomy with Mei, Byronosaurus, Sinornithoides, Sinusonasus, and Troodon + (Saurornithoides + Zanabazar). Geminiraptor suarezarum uniquely exhibits extreme pneumatic inflation of the maxilla internal to the antorbital fossa such that the anterior maxilla has a triangular cross-section. Unlike troodontids more closely related to Troodon, G. suarezarum exhibits bony septa between the dental alveoli and a promaxillary foramen that is visible in lateral view.

Conclusions/Significance

This is the first report of a North American troodontid from the Lower Cretaceous. It therefore contributes to a fuller understanding of troodontid biogeography through time. It also adds to the known dinosaurian fauna of the Cedar Mountain Formation.  相似文献

Summer and winter growth rates were assessed separately for a population of the Antarctic brachiopod Liothyrella uva between early January 1992 and December 1993. Annual shell growth rates (1.6-2.3 mm yr-1 for a 5 mm individual; 0.96-1.44 mm -1 for a 20 mm specimen) were two to six times slower than those reported for temperate species. Growth in specimens less than 20 mm in length was faster in 1992 than in 1993, although differences between years over the whole size range were not significant. Surprisingly, growth was much faster in winter periods than during the summers. A 5 mm long individual grew five times faster in winter than in summer, and for a 20 mm long specimen the difference was 13 times. This runs contrary to current ideas on the effects of seasonality on the biology of polar marine invertebrates, but may be an effect of maximizing the efficiency of resource utilization. Comparisons with previous work showed shell growth to be decoupled from periods of tissue mass increase, and also from the main period of phytoplankton productivity. Oxygen consumption of 75 of the specimens used in the growth study was measured to test the hypothesis that basal metabolic rates should be inversely correlated with growth rates. Unexpectedly, an analysis of residuals produced no significant relationship, positive or negative, between growth rate and basal metabolism (F = 1.37, p=0.25, n = 75). <br>  相似文献

Background

Troodontids are a predominantly small-bodied group of feathered theropod dinosaurs notable for their close evolutionary relationship with Avialae. Despite a diverse Asian representation with remarkable growth in recent years, the North American record of the clade remains poor, with only one controversial species—Troodon formosus—presently known from substantial skeletal remains.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here we report a gracile new troodontid theropod—Talos sampsoni gen. et sp. nov.—from the Upper Cretaceous Kaiparowits Formation, Utah, USA, representing one of the most complete troodontid skeletons described from North America to date. Histological assessment of the holotype specimen indicates that the adult body size of Talos was notably smaller than that of the contemporary genus Troodon. Phylogenetic analysis recovers Talos as a member of a derived, latest Cretaceous subclade, minimally containing Troodon, Saurornithoides, and Zanabazar. MicroCT scans reveal extreme pathological remodeling on pedal phalanx II-1 of the holotype specimen likely resulting from physical trauma and subsequent infectious processes.

Conclusion/Significance

Talos sampsoni adds to the singularity of the Kaiparowits Formation dinosaur fauna, which is represented by at least 10 previously unrecognized species including the recently named ceratopsids Utahceratops and Kosmoceratops, the hadrosaurine Gryposaurus monumentensis, the tyrannosaurid Teratophoneus, and the oviraptorosaurian Hagryphus. The presence of a distinct troodontid taxon in the Kaiparowits Formation supports the hypothesis that late Campanian dinosaurs of the Western Interior Basin exhibited restricted geographic ranges and suggests that the taxonomic diversity of Late Cretaceous troodontids from North America is currently underestimated. An apparent traumatic injury to the foot of Talos with evidence of subsequent healing sheds new light on the paleobiology of deinonychosaurians by bolstering functional interpretations of prey grappling and/or intraspecific combat for the second pedal digit, and supporting trackway evidence indicating a minimal role in weight bearing.  相似文献

Over the past decade, ancient genomics has been used in the study of various pathogens. In this context, herbarium specimens provide a precious source of dated and preserved DNA material, enabling a better understanding of plant disease emergences and pathogen evolutionary history. We report here the first historical genome of a crop bacterial pathogen, Xanthomonas citri pv. citri (Xci), obtained from an infected herbarium specimen dating back to 1937. Comparing the 1937 genome within a large set of modern genomes, we reconstructed their phylogenetic relationships and estimated evolutionary parameters using Bayesian tip-calibration inferences. The arrival of Xci in the South West Indian Ocean islands was dated to the 19th century, probably linked to human migrations following slavery abolishment. We also assessed the metagenomic community of the herbarium specimen, showed its authenticity using DNA damage patterns, and investigated its genomic features including functional SNPs and gene content, with a focus on virulence factors.  相似文献

Bone damage removal and callus formation in response to fatigue loading are essential to prevent fractures. Periostin (Postn) is a matricellular protein that mediates adaptive response of cortical bone to loading. Whether and how periostin influences damage and the injury response to fatigue remains unknown. We investigated the skeletal response of Postn -/- and Postn +/+ mice after fatigue stimulus by axial compression of their tibia. In Postn +/+ mice, cracks number and surface (CsNb, CsS) increased 1h after fatigue, with a decrease in strength compared to non-fatigued tibia. At 15 days, CsNb had started to decline, while CtTV and CtBV increased in fatigued vs non-fatigued tibia, reflecting a woven bone response that was present in 75% of the fatigued bones. Cortical porosity and remodelling also prominently increased in the fatigued tibia of Postn +/+ mice. At 30 days, paralleling a continuous removal of cortical damage, strength of the fatigued tibia was similar to the non-fatigue tibia. In Postn -/- mice, cracks were detectable even in the absence of fatigue, while the amount of collagen crosslinks and tissue hardness was decreased compared to Postn +/+. Fatigue significantly increased CsNb and CsS in Postn -/-, but was not associated with changes in CtTV and CtBV, as only 16% of the fatigued bones formed some woven bone. Cortical porosity and remodelling did not increase either after fatigue in Postn -/- , and the level of damage remained high even after 30 days. As a result, strength remained compromised in Postn -/- mice. Contrary to Postn +/+ , which osteocytic lacunae showed a change in the degree of anisotropy (DA) after fatigue, Postn-/- showed no DA change. Hence periostin appears to influence bone materials properties, damage accumulation and repair, including local modeling/remodeling processes in response to fatigue. These observations suggest that the level of periostin expression could influence the propensity to fatigue fractures.

A new oviraptorosaur Nankangia jiangxiensis gen. et sp. nov. is described on the basis of a partial postcranial skeleton with a partial lower jaw collected from the Upper Cretaceous Nanxiong Formation of Ganzhou, in Jiangxi Province of southern China. The new taxon is diagnosed by: (1) a mandibular symphysis that is not turned down; (2) neural spines of the cranial caudal vertebrae that are wider transversely than anteroposteriorly, forming a large posterior fossa with rugose central areas; (3) a femoral neck extending at an angle of about 90 to the shaft; and (4) a ratio of femur to tibia length of 0.95. Phylogenetic analysis recovers Nankangia as basal to the oviraptorid Yulong, but more derived than Caenagnathus, which also has a mandibular symphysis that is not turned down. The coexistence of Nankangia jiangxiensis, Ganzhousaurus nankangensis, Jiangxisaurus ganzhouensis, an unnamed oviraptorid from Nanxiong Basin and Banji long suggests that they occupied distinct ecological niches. Nankangia may have been more herbivorous than carnivorous.  相似文献

ALL known specimens of the Recent coelacanth fish, Latimeria, are large specimens (mostly more than 100 cm total length) and only one female with eggs has been recorded1,2. Consequently, the ontogeny and the early growth stages of the Recent coelacanth are unknown. In the fossil record, one specimen of Holophagus (= Undina) from the Upper Jurassic of Solnhofen, southern Germany, has been recorded with two young coelacanths inside3. Watson has argued from this finding that the coelacanths are viviparous but it seems more reasonable to interpret this fossil specimen as a cannibal that had just swallowed two young of its own kind. This interpretation is favoured by the position of the two specimens and by the discovery of other fossil coelacanths containing large specimens of other kinds of fishes in their stomachs4.  相似文献

Lewisuchus admixtus is a basal dinosauriform coming from Late Triassic outcrops of NW Argentina. Although this taxon was recently anatomically restudied, histological data is still wanting. The microstructure of the long bones (femur and two tibie) reveals a relatively fast rate of growth, comparable with that seen in other basal Dinosauriformes and basal dinosaurs. Cortical bone is comprised of fibro-lamellar complex in one femur and tibia, but parallel-fibered matrix are observed in the other tibia. The secondary remodelling of bone is poor and there is not growth marks. The vascularization is relatively dense, longitudinal, laminar and reticular. There are some features that indicate slowdown of the growth at late age of the specimens. The fast growth of L. admixtus implies a relatively high metabolic rate. This is probably related with environmental conditions.  相似文献

There are significant gaps in accessible knowledge about the distribution and phenology of Iberian harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones). Harvestmen accessible datasets in Iberian Peninsula are unknown, an only two other datasets available in GBIF are composed exclusively of harvestmen records. Moreover, only a few harvestmen data from Iberian Peninsula are available in GBIF network (or in any network that allows public retrieval or use these data). This paper describes the data associated with the Opiliones kept in the BOS Arthropod Collection of the University of Oviedo, Spain (hosted in the Department of Biología de Organismos y Sistemas), filling some of those gaps. The specimens were mainly collected from the northern third of the Iberian Peninsula. The earliest specimen deposited in the collection, dating back to the early 20th century, belongs to the P. Franganillo Collection. The dataset documents the collection of 16,455 specimens, preserved in 3,772 vials. Approximately 38% of the specimens belong to the family Sclerosomatidae, and 26% to Phalangidae; six other families with fewer specimens are also included. Data quality control was incorporated at several steps of digitisation process to facilitate reuse and improve accuracy. The complete dataset is also provided in Darwin Core Archive format, allowing public retrieval, use and combination with other biological, biodiversity of geographical variables datasets.  相似文献

Background

Methanobrevibacter smithii, Methanobrevibacter oralis, Methanosphaera stadtmanae, Methanomassilicoccus luminyensis and Methanobrevibacter arboriphilicus have been cultured from human digestive microbiota. Each one of these fastidious methanogenic archaea requires a specific medium for its growth, hampering their routine isolation and the culture.

Methodology/Principal Findings

A new culture medium here referred as SAB medium was optimized and tested to cultivate methanogens associated with human microbiota, as well as two mesophile methanogens Methanobacterium beijingense and Methanosaeta concilii. It was further tested for the isolation of archaea from 20 human stool specimens including 10 specimens testing positive for PCR detection of M. smithii. After inoculating 105 colony-forming-unit archaea/mL or 1 g stool specimen in parallel in SAB medium and reference DSMZ medium in the presence of negative controls, growth of archaea was determined by optical microscopy and the measurement of methane production by gas chromatography. While the negative controls remained sterile, all tested archaea grew significantly more rapidly in SAB medium than in reference medium in 1–3 days (P<0.05, Student test). Among PCR-positive stool specimens, 10/10 grew in the SAB medium, 6/10 in DSMZ 119 medium, 5/10 in DSMZ 322 medium and 3/10 in DSMZ 334 c medium. Four out of ten PCR-negative stool specimens grew after a 3-week incubation in the SAB-medium whereas no growth was detected in any of the reference media. 16S rRNA gene sequencing yielded 99–100% sequence similarity with reference M. smithii except for one specimen that yielded 99–100% sequence similarity with reference Methanobrevibacter millerae.

Conclusions/Significance

SAB medium allows for the versatile isolation and growth of methanogenic archaea associated with human gut microbiota including the archaea missed by inoculation of reference media. Implementation of the SAB medium in veterinary and medical microbiology laboratories will ease the routine culture-based detection of methanogenic archaea in clinical and environmental specimens.  相似文献

Callus tissues derived from leaf segments of Onosma echioides var hispidum on three basal media viz. Murashige & Skoog(MS), Gamborg et al (B5) and White’s containing 3% sucrose produce napthaquinone pigments in presence of and NAA.However, β-β,dimethylacrylshikonin synthesis was triggered in dark in undifferentiated parenchyma cells on B5 agar mediumcontaining 1 x10?5 M Kn and 2×10?6 M IBA when proliferated calli after 16 weeks (4th generation) were transferred to it andincubated at 23 ± 1 °C. The pigment biosynthesis increased linearly from 4th to 6th week after a lag of first 3 weeks. Callus grewexponentially after a lag of 2 weeks and diminished from 6th week onward. During 8 weeks of growth, callus grew from 0.8 to8.2 g and the β-β, dimethylacrylshikonin showed the highest level of 25.41 μg g?1 of fresh tissue. Light microscopic examinationof semi-thin sections of pigmented tissue revealed pigment accumlation between the plasma membrane and cell wall andalso in the intercellular spaces. Exposure of cultures to white fluorescent light for more than 2 h resulted in completerepression of pigment bosynthesis. The investigations suggest that the regulatory mechanism for the biosynthesis andaccumulation of napthaquinone pigment(s) may be similar to that of Lithospermum erythrorhizon. Pigment producingcapability of callus cultures of O. echioides var hispidum can be exploited as an alternative raw source for the production ofshikonin derivatives.  相似文献

IntroductionPreviously, a finite element (FE) model of the proximal tibia was developed and validated against experimentally measured local subchondral stiffness. This model indicated modest predictions of stiffness (R2 = 0.77, normalized root mean squared error (RMSE%) = 16.6%). Trabecular bone though was modeled with isotropic material properties despite its orthotropic anisotropy. The objective of this study was to identify the anisotropic FE modeling approach which best predicted (with largest explained variance and least amount of error) local subchondral bone stiffness at the proximal tibia.MethodsLocal stiffness was measured at the subchondral surface of 13 medial/lateral tibial compartments using in situ macro indentation testing. An FE model of each specimen was generated assuming uniform anisotropy with 14 different combinations of cortical- and tibial-specific density-modulus relationships taken from the literature. Two FE models of each specimen were also generated which accounted for the spatial variation of trabecular bone anisotropy directly from clinical CT images using grey-level structure tensor and Cowin’s fabric-elasticity equations. Stiffness was calculated using FE and compared to measured stiffness in terms of R2 and RMSE%.ResultsThe uniform anisotropic FE model explained 53–74% of the measured stiffness variance, with RMSE% ranging from 12.4 to 245.3%. The models which accounted for spatial variation of trabecular bone anisotropy predicted 76–79% of the variance in stiffness with RMSE% being 11.2–11.5%.ConclusionsOf the 16 evaluated finite element models in this study, the combination of Synder and Schneider (for cortical bone) and Cowin’s fabric-elasticity equations (for trabecular bone) best predicted local subchondral bone stiffness.  相似文献

Background

The Troodontidae represents one of the most bird-like theropod groups and plays an important role in our understanding of avian origins. Although troodontids have been known for over 150 years, few known derived troodontid specimens preserve significant portions of both the forelimb and the hindlimb.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here, we report a new troodontid taxon, Linhevenator tani gen. et sp. nov., based on a partial, semi-articulated skeleton recovered from the Upper Cretaceous Wulansuhai Formation of Wulatehouqi, Inner Mongolia, China. L. tani has an unusual combination of primitive and derived character states, though our phylogenetic analysis places it in a derived clade within the Troodontidae. As a derived taxon, L. tani has a dromaeosaurid-like pedal digit II, and this species also possesses a humerus that is proportionally much shorter and more robust than those of most other troodontids.

Conclusion/Significance

The combination of features present in Linhevenator indicates a complex pattern of character evolution within the Troodontidae. In particular, the discovery of Linhevenator suggests that derived troodontids have independently evolved a highly specialized pedal digit II and have significantly shortened the forelimb over the course of their evolution.  相似文献

Cyclocarya paliurus is a unique plant growing in central China with hypoglycaemic and hypolipaemia effects. To make better use of this functional food resource, cell suspension cultures and triterpenic acid accumulation were studied. Stable and uniform cell suspension cultures were established in liquid basal Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (0.5 mg/L), naphthalene acetic acid (0.3 mg/L) and cytokinin (1.0 mg/L). According to the growth curve and triterpenic acid accumulation curve, the 8 ~ 10th day postinoculation was the optimum time for subculture, and the 14th day was the optimum time for harvest. Murashige and Skoog medium and woody plant medium were suitable for both cell growth and triterpenic acid accumulation. 3% sucrose (w/v), 60 mM total nitrogen (NO3 ?/NH4 + = 2/1), 1.25 mM KH2PO4, 2 mM CaCl2, and 2 mM MgSO4 were all found to be fit for cell growth and triterpenic acid accumulation in a cell suspension culture of Cyclocarya paliurus. Total triterpenic acid, ursolic acid and oleanolic acid content in suspended cultured cells were all significantly higher than that of leaves and calluses (P ? 0.01), with levels up to 6.24, 2.28, and 0.94% (of dry weight), respectively. The betulinic acid content of suspended cultured cells also reached 0.82%, which was significantly higher than that of calluses. These results suggest that suspended cultured cells of Cyclocarya paliurus were rich in triterpenic acids and could be used for the production of total triterpenic acid, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid and betulinic acid.  相似文献

Although physiological saline (0.15 M NaCl aqueous solution) has been used as a storage solution to prevent bone specimens from drying, there have been reports that Ca2+ ions dissolve from bone specimens during the storage in saline. In order to determine whether such storage has a marked effect on mechanical properties, the relaxation modulus of bovine cortical bone stored in physiological saline was compared with that stored in a buffer solution containing a sufficient amount of Ca2+ ions. After storage in saline, the modulus value of specimens was significantly reduced from that before storage. On the other hand, the modulus value of specimens soaked in the solution containing sufficient Ca2+ ions did not change after storage. The relaxation rate of a bone specimen stored in physiological saline was larger than that of a specimen stored in Ca2+-buffered saline solution and that of the control specimens. The results suggest that by the dissolution of Ca2+ ions from a bone specimen during storage in physiological saline, percolated paths of mineral phase and of reinforced matrix phase are disjoined, resulting in reduction in the elastic modulus and change in the viscoelastic properties of bone.  相似文献
