The leaf life span, leaf habit (evergreenness and deciduousness), and species diversity of trees were simulated by a cost-benefit model of leaf longevity (Kikuzawa 1991), using monthly mean temperature values and their decreasing rate with altitude of 6°C with 1000 m of sites of different latitude and altitude in eastern Asia. Numbers of tree species in tropical regions with different lengths of favorable period for photosynthesis were also simulated. The following results were obtained by the model simulation.
  1. In tropical areas, evergreen forests predominate from lowlands to the altitudinal limit of forests.
  2. However, leaf longevity is shorter in the lowland than that at a higher altitude.
  3. Percentages of deciduousness are high in mid latitude, and the percentages of evergreenness again increase in even higher latitude, resulting in a bimodal distribution in percentages of evergreenness with increasing latitudes.
  4. Altitudinal distribution of percentages of evergreenness and deciduousness in mid latitude duplicates the latitudinal distribution. In low altitudes, percentages of evergreenness are high. But in mid altitudes, percentages of deciduousness become high, in even higher altitudes, however, evergreenness again predominates.
  5. Number of species is highest in the non-seasonal tropical region and decreases towards seasonal tropics and higher altitudes and latitudes.

The mechanical properties of broad-leaf tree species in a maritime-wind exposed habitat in central Japan were examined. The broad-leaf trees studied were Celtis sinensis var. japonica, Ilex integra, Eurya japonica, Pittosporum tobira, Euonymus japonicus and Cinnamomum japonicum. The results obtained can be summarized briefly as follows:
  1. At places with weaker wind, the number of species increased and the height of the canopy increased.
  2. The fracture strength σm showed no dependence on tree part or branch thickness, but was constant.
  3. The order of strength was Celtis sinensis var. japonica > Ilex integra > Eurya japonica > Pittosporum tobira > Euonymus japonicus > Cinnamomum japonicum, and these six species could best adapt to the wind pressure in the study area.
  4. Within species, fracture strength varied directly with wind strength.
  5. The strain εm decreased as the trunk became thicker.
  6. Within species, strain energy Um varied directly with wind strength.

  1. This investigation demonstrates the presence of three different species in Hessen (West Germany). By means of three maps the recent distribution is demonstrated.
  2. Astacus astacus is still present in Hessen in small populations.
  3. Austropotamobius torrentium is the rarest species and was recorded only in the Taunus-, Spessart- und Odenwald mountains.
  4. Oronectes limosus, in the rivers Rhein and Main numerous before 1950, has become scarce. In the river Fulda there have been only two recordings in 1958.

Woodcocks, Scolopax rusticola, are long-billed terrestrial wading birds (Scolopacidae; Charadriiformes) which forage primarily by probing in soft substrates for invertebrates. Visual field topography in restrained alert birds was investigated using an ophthalmoscopic reflex technique.
  1. Eye movements of significant amplitude are absent.
  2. The retinal binocular field is long and narrow. It extends through 190° in the median sagittal plane. When the head adopts a normal posture (bill at an angle of 40° below the horizontal) the binocular field stretches from 25° above the bill to 5° above the horizontal behind the head. Thus, woodcocks have comprehensive visual coverage of the hemisphere above them but the bill falls outside the visual field. Maximum binocular field width equals 12° and occurs perpendicular to the line of the bill. To the rear of the head binocular field width is less than 5° except in an area 40° above the horizontal where it increases to 7°.
  3. Monocular retinal fields in the horizontal plane are 182° wide. There is no blind sector at the margin of the optical fields.
  4. The general structure of woodcock skulls facilitates panoramic vision in a horizontal plane.
  5. Interspecific comparisons are consistent with the hypothesis that visual field topography among birds is closely associated with the role of vision in foraging. Comprehensive visual coverage of the celestial hemisphere probably occurs only in species, such as woodcocks, which rely primarily upon senses other than vision to guide foraging.

The European Common Agricultural Policy has promoted the intensification of productive olive orchards and the abandonment of the unproductive ones. This strategy has resulted in a significant loss of biodiversity and ecosystem functionality of this type of agroecosystem. Here, we studied the blackcap Sylvia atricapilla, a common frugivorous bird species, in an olive-dominated agroecosystem of southern Spain to assess the effects of the abandonment of olive groves and undergrowth structure on habitat selection in this species. By means of radiotelemetry, we determined habitat selection of blackcaps during both the breeding (N = 30) and the non-breeding (N = 27) seasons of 2011 and 2012. We found that outside the breeding season, olive groves were widely used by blackcaps, which invariably preferred abandoned olive groves over intensively managed ones. Additionally, deciduous woods and poplar plantation were positively selected, whereas open habitats and Pinus forests were avoided. Generally, woody habitats without undergrowth or with herbaceous undergrowth were avoided. During the breeding season, the species selected mainly riverine habitats and poplar plantations, favoring habitats with well-developed undergrowth. Our results suggest that the blackcap could benefit from maintaining patches of abandoned olive groves freely left to natural succession within intensive olive groves. In such a landscape, ecological services (i.e., seed dispersal provided by frugivorous birds) and functioning could also improve as a consequence of these measures.  相似文献

The following scheme lists the problems which have been and will continue to be encountered in grazing experiments on natural particle assemblages. In some cases there are solutions, but many of the problems listed below remain intractable. To solve them will require innovative approaches, most probably combining the use of particle counters with other techniques to approach the problem to be solved from several angles at once.   • - statistical causes (especially caused by large particles) and
  • - differences between experimental bottles and between experimentals and controls at start of experiment. Shifts in particle distribution during experiment due to
  • - increase in small particles
  • - growth of bacteria and other organisms due to excretion of grazers and
  • - breakage during handling by grazers into fragments. Processes, independent of grazing, leading to changes in particle size distribution due to
  • - primary production
  • - grazing by additional components and
  • - bacterial growth on detrital particles and the formation of detrital flocs.

    1. Rhizopod tests from 16 cores of sediments from lake Latnjajaure, in Swedish Lapland, were studied and found to show the development of the lake since its formation. Latnjajaure is a oligotrophic mountain lake.
    2. All cores contained many remains of rhizopods, most of them intact. Most broken tests could be reconstructed. Postglacial development of a lake could thus be elucidated for the first time.
    3. The sediment cores contained 24 species of Testacea, 41.6% of the recent fauna. The rank order of species forming 1 % or more of the total number in the cores is nearly identical with the rank order of recent species.
    4. The history of lake Latnjajaure is characterized by Centropyxis aërophila, an oligotrophic species. Periods of beginning eutrophication are indicated by a decrease of Centropyxis aërophila and an increase of Difflugia species, but typical eutrophic species were absent. A dystrophic phase in the development could not be ascertained by means of rhizopods.

    Pharmacological and toxicological studies undertaken on drugs that affect the brain are frequently performed in disparate species under various experimental conditions, at doses often greatly in excess of those expected to be administered to humans, and the findings are extrapolated implicitly or explicitly with scant regard to differences in the biodisposition of the drugs. Such considerations are necessary since:
    1. Species;
    2. Strain;
    3. Gender;
    4. Route;
    5. Dose;
    6. Frequency and time of administration;
    7. Temperature;
    8. Coadministration of drugs; and
    9. Surgical manipulation
    are but some of the factors that have been shown to influence the kinetics and metabolism of drugs. This article, using MDMA and other phenylethylamines as examples, provides evidence for the need to measure the exoosure of the drugs and their active metabolites in blood and brain (toxicokinetics) in order that conclusions based only on dynamic, biochemical, or histological evidence are more pertinent. Further, the combined use of toxicokinetic-dynamic modeling can lead to a better appreciation of the mechanisms involved and a more useful approach to the calculation of safety margins.  相似文献

    1. The epipelic algal standing crops were increased by the discharge of thermal effluent into Lake Wabamun, particularly in the discharge canal at station (03–04) and 05.
    2. The increase in the standing crop size of the epipelon was due to Oscillatoria amoena and O. borneti in the heated area, while the discharge canal provided the inoculum of the algae for the heated area of the lake.
    3. At station (03–04) the increased standing crop size was also a function of increased light penetration to the sediment due to the heated effluent keeping an area of the lake free of ice during the winter.
    4. The species composition of the diatoms was similar at all stations except in the discharge canal where there was a reduction in the number of diatom species.
    5. Navicula cuspidate developed best in the discharge canal in the summer where water temperatures of 31°C were recorded.
    6. Amphora ovalis var. pediculus was the dominant diatom species during the winter under ice-cover.
    7. The heated effluent had no effect upon the standing crop or species composition of the epipsammon.
    8. Results obtained from the sediment core study showed that the shallow littoral zone of the lake is very disturbed due to wind-induced wave action.

    Most of the 33 fungal metabolites tested provoke:
    1. Bacterial growth inhibition of Bacillus thuringiensis similar to lethal effect of antibiotics.
    2. Positive response in the ‘Rec’ assay using strains of Bacillus subtilis; this fact shows that these toxins are DNA modifying agents.
    3. Enlargement of cell volume in the first bacteria species; this cell-abnormality induction resembles those obtained with mitomycin C.
    Correlation between elongation of cells (filamentation) and in vivo carcinogenicity of mycotoxins is discussed. The filamentation should be an expression of a perturbated DNA replication (S.O.S.-error prone repair) as the consequence of DNA damages induced by genotoxic agents (i.e. carcinogens).  相似文献

    Most endangered plant species in a fragmented forest behave as a unique source population, with a high dependence on frugivorous birds for recruitment and persistence. In this study, we combined field data of dispersal behavior of birds and GIS information of patch attributes to estimate how frugivorous birds could affect the effective dispersal pattern of Chinese yew (Taxus chinensis) in a fragmented and disturbed forest. Nine bird species were observed to visit T. chinensis trees, with Urocissa erythrorhyncha, Zoothera dauma and Picus canus being the most common dispersers. After foraging, six disperser species exhibited different perching patterns. Three specialist species, P. canus, Turdus hortulorum, and Z. dauma stayed in the source patch, while three generalist species, U. erythrorhyncha, Hypsipetes mcclellandii, and H. castanonotus, could perch in bamboo patches and varied in movement ability due to body size. As a consequence of perching, dispersers significantly contributed to the seed bank, but indirectly affected seedling recruitment. Moreover, the recruitment of T. chinensis was also affected by patch attributes in a fragmented forest (distances to source patch, patch type, size). Our results highlighted the ability of unique source population regeneration of T. chinensis in a fragmented forest, with high dependence on both frugivorous birds and patch attributes, which should be considered in future planning for forest management and conservation.  相似文献

    1. Growth of the floating aquatic weed, Salvinia, in sterile culture was exponential for at least 2 weeks under standardized conditions.
    2. Increase in light intensity or in CO2 resulted in increases in growth rate, but did not extend the exponential period of growth.
    3. This aquatic plant, like many others, discriminates against calcium relative to strontium.
    4. In culture Salvinia exhibited luxury consumption of N and P.
    5. Because of high C/N ratios, Salvinia may not be a favorable source of animal food, but might be useful in nutrient removal schemes.
    6. In sterile culture, S. molesta produced fewer leaves than S. minima, but maintained a significant increase in leaf area and dry weight. This may be correlated with the ability of the first species to rapidly spread over tropical waterways.

    1. An ecological study of the Ponggol Estuary was conducted from July 1965 to June 1966 and the seasonal data on physical, chemical and biological characteristics were presented.
    2. The Ponggol River represents a short, narrow and shallow estuary in Singapore. The river mouth is open throughout the year and water from eastern Johore Straits drains in twice a day at high tide. The upper reach, however, is left exposed at low tide.
    3. The Ponggol River was classified as a vertically and laterally homogeneous estuary and was found to exhibit a mesohaline to polyhaline environment.
    4. Significant hydrological gradients from the river mouth 10 the upper reach were noted in the river system. Salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH increased towards the mouth of the river and other parameters such as nutrients, dissolved organic matter and turbidity increased towards the source.
    5. Although the river received organic pollutants at the upper reach the estuary was able to discharge them fairly rapidly through regular flushing by the tides. The transient rise of organic matter did not appear to impart any serious affect on the biota in the estuary.
    6. Over 98% of the phytoplankton consisted of diatoms, most of which were brought into the estuary from eastern Johore Straits. Freshwater forms were relatively few.
    7. Phytoplankton biomass was considerably higher than the adjoining waters. and was reduced at the upper reach due to high turbidity of the water.
    8. 80% of the zooplankton was composed of dinoflagellates,Difflugia, copepods and bivalve larvae dominating at all sections of the estuary.
    9. Percentage composition of the zooplankton showed that dinoflagellates and copepod nauplii predominated at high tide whileDifflugia and bivalve larvae were abundant at low tide.
    10. Zooplankton standing crop, in general, was higher towards the source at high tide but the reverse was found at low tide, i.e. standing crop increased towards the river mouth. This was attributed to the process of concentration.
    11. Species composition of zooplankton was found to be more or less similar to that of the eastern Johore Straits.
    12. The nekton consisted predominantly of small and juvenile fish. Close correlation of fish and copepods was found to be statistically valid and it was concluded that the fish entered the estuary to feed rather than to spawn.
    13. The squids formed an important catch of the beach seine unit and were caught throughout the year.
    14. The fish population could be grouped into four categories: estuarine components, euryhaline components, marine components and migratory components.
    15. Benthic invertebrates were abundant. Commercially important species consisted of prawns,Metapenaeus andPenaeus, and crabs,Neptunus pelagicus andScylla serrata.
    16. The river bed was inhabited predominantly by molluscs and the distribution resembled that of the sheltered shore of muddy-sand type.

    1. Specific activity of amylase, cellulase, protease and lipase in the intestines of the air-breathing catfish, Clarias batrachus (Linn.) has been studied.
    2. Excepting amylase and protease, the activity of lipase and cellulase showed practically no changes with change in the nutritional status of the diets.
    3. pH optima of all enzymes were between 6.9 and 7.6
    4. There is reason to believe from cellulase and high amylase activity in the intestine of the species that its culture operation could be done more economically by giving them a supplementary diet from indigeneously available raw material particularly from plant origin.

    Phytoplankton species composition, horizontal distribution, seasonal- and long-term dynamics are investigated in relation to some environmental factors, based on about 700 samples taken between 1968 and 1992 in the shallow, turbid, turbulent, saline Neusiedlersee (Austria/Hungary). We deduced:
    1. The phytoplankton is relatively poor in species which is attributable to high salinity and turbidity. Blue-green algae of picoalgal size, meroplanktonic diatoms, green algae either with gelée or elongated form are the most important groups in the plankton;
    2. No consequent horizontal differences in the distribution of phytoplankton biomass were found; the high contribution of diatoms (69%) and green algae (22%) is characteristic;
    3. Despite the low percentage contribution (0.54%) of phytoplankton dry weight in total seston, the two variables correlate closely because of simultaneous resuspension after wind actions. The prevalence of both low phytoplankton/seston ratio and significant correlation between these two variables is indicative to the presence of a meroplankton;
    4. Phytoplankton biomass, especially that of diatoms, varies within wide limits in the short term as a combined effect of growth/loss, transport by horizontal water currents and periodic resuspension from the sediment surface. Diatoms like Fragilaria, Surirella and Campylodiscus are involved especially. Parameters of population dynamics (growth rate, annual cycles, length of stationary phases, standing crop) were estimated based on moving averages. Growth rates were smaller than those of ‘normal’ planktonic species; however, the similarities of seasonal pattern suggest that the carrying capacity of the lake is very constant;
    5. Picoalgal biomass is very high in the lake; its contribution to total biomass can exceed 75%, especially in spring. The large cellular chlorophyll a content of Neusiedlersee's phytoplankton can most probably be explained by this high picoalgal standing crop, which is not included in the routine biomass estimations;
    6. Concerning long-term changes of phytoplankton, periodic appearances and disappearances are very characteristic. Annual average biomass of most species is growing for several (3–5) years, then declining with a similar rate and these periods are recurrent. Climatic drying-out periods, during which water level lowers, conductivity increases, nutrients and their ratios change following trend-like periodicities, and they are supposed to be responsible for the observed longterm periodicity of dominant species. An increased nutrient load in the seventies was superimposed on this cyclicity;
    7. Most of the species can be found in smaller or larger amounts in the littoral microhabitats (canals, inner ponds) of the lake in periods when they are absent or very rare in the open water. Thus, these littoral microhabitats play a very important role in the survival and recruitment of planktonic populations to the open water.

    Receptor neuron responses to plant volatiles, trapped by head-space procedures, were examined in the pine weevil Hylobius abietis, using gas chromatography linked with electrophysiological recordings from single neurons. Seventy-two receptor neurons were tested 173 times for various plant volatile mixtures, either via a polar or a non-polar column.
    1. All responses appeared as increased firing rates which followed the concentration profiles of the GC-eluted compounds.
    2. The neurons were classified separately for the two column types in 17 and 19 groups respectively, according to the compounds they responded to. It suggests that the plant odour information is encoded by a large, but limited number of receptor neuron types.
    3. Most neurons responded to a limited number of compounds (1–5) and showed a marked best response to one of them, whereas additional responses to several other components which seems to be structurally similar, was recorded for some neurons. It suggests that the plant odour receptor neurons are rather narrowly than broadly tuned, and that each neuron is specialized for receiving information about one or a few related compounds.
    4. Most neurons responded to monoterpenes, whereas the other neurons responded to compounds of other categories.
    5. Both major and minor plant volatile components activated specifically receptor neurons.

    1. A collection of polychaetous annelids made by the Japanese research vessel ‘Umitaka-Maru’ in December 1968 from the Arabian Gulf was examined.
    2. Seventeen species, belonging to twelve families, are identified.
    3. Two pelagic families (Alciopidae, Tomopteridae) and five species (Plotohelmis capitata, Tomopteris sp.,Autolytus cf.A. longistaffi, Lysidice ninetta, Pista cristata) are recorded new to the fauna of the Arabian Gulf.

    EPR spectroscopy is a powerful tool to identify at a molecular level, the different steps of catalyst preparation, and of catalytic reactions:
    1. Deposition of paramagnetic transition metal ions onto a support is monitored, and the coordination sphere of the metallic center is characterized by EPR.
    2. The catalyst is also characterized after activation (thermal oxidation or reduction):
  • - the distribution among the different sites in zeolites can be determined;
  • - the dispersion of the active phase may be appreciated;
  • - the unsaturation degree of the active site may be evaluated using probe molecules such as water or13C enriched carbon monoxide.
    1. The catalytic mechanisms can be investigated by studying the elementary steps of the catalytic reaction, as illustrated for methanol oxidation over Mo/SiO2 catalysts whose EPR results have extended the reaction mechanism proposed on the basis of kinetic data. In addition, reaction intermediates may be isolated inquasi-in situ conditions as in the case of olefin oligomerization catalyzed by Ni/SiO2 systems.

    1. From 40 waters of the Abisko-district (Sweden, Lapland) 58 samples were collected (essentially samples from sediments).
    2. It is not possible to clear the origin of all discovered tests of sediments. The bottom of most waters was covered with mosses, from which vegetation, tests can come into the sediments. But also tests from other biotopes, can be found at the bottom.
    3. Nevertheless we can recognize typical characters of those species living in sediments. The prevalent type is the “Difflugia-type”. Those species of Centropyxis which immigrated into sediments demonstrate a trend towards the “Difflugia-type”. The immigration is possible from Aufwuchs, mosses and soils. 62,7% of the recorded tests belong to Difflugia, 17,8% to Centropyxis.
    4. The prevalent species in the sediments of the Abisko-district is Difflugia elegans var. teres, the next is D. glubolosa.
    5. A great number of investigated waters contained the oligotrophic species Centropyxis aërophila. Only one lake (Ruontenjaure) shows the association of dystrophic lakes.
    6. Some species are described taxonomically, for instance: Centropyxis nauwercki n.sp. C. nauwercki is very much like Difflugia, but is also connected with C. platystoma. The new species shows a trend from Centropyxis to Difflugia.
    7. C. aërophila can also immigrate into the Aufwuchs. There the species has membraneous tests.
    8. Geographical aspects of the sediment colonization are discussed.
