Respiratory muscle fatigue develops during exhaustive exercise and can limit exercise performance. Respiratory muscle training, in turn, can increase exercise performance. We investigated whether respiratory muscle endurance training (RMT) reduces exercise-induced inspiratory and expiratory muscle fatigue. Twenty-one healthy, male volunteers performed twenty 30-min sessions of either normocapnic hyperpnoea (n = 13) or sham training (CON, n = 8) over 4-5 wk. Before and after training, subjects performed a constant-load cycling test at 85% maximal power output to exhaustion (PRE(EXH), POST(EXH)). A further posttraining test was stopped at the pretraining duration (POST(ISO)) i.e., isotime. Before and after cycling, transdiaphragmatic pressure was measured during cervical magnetic stimulation to assess diaphragm contractility, and gastric pressure was measured during thoracic magnetic stimulation to assess abdominal muscle contractility. Overall, RMT did not reduce respiratory muscle fatigue. However, in subjects who developed >10% of diaphragm or abdominal muscle fatigue in PRE(EXH), fatigue was significantly reduced after RMT in POST(ISO) (inspiratory: -17 +/- 6% vs. -9 +/- 10%, P = 0.038, n = 9; abdominal: -19 +/- 10% vs. -11 +/- 11%, P = 0.038, n = 9), while sham training had no significant effect. Similarly, cycling endurance in POST(EXH) did not improve after RMT (P = 0.071), while a significant improvement was seen in the subgroup with >10% of diaphragm fatigue after PRE(EXH) (P = 0.017), but not in the sham training group (P = 0.674). However, changes in cycling endurance did not correlate with changes in respiratory muscle fatigue. In conclusion, RMT decreased the development of respiratory muscle fatigue during intensive exercise, but this change did not seem to improve cycling endurance.  相似文献

Male Wistar rats were treadmill-trained for 8 weeks using one of the two regimens: with the constant running speed or with alternating high-speed and low-speed intervals. Both training regimens led to an increase of rat aerobic capacities and to a higher citrate synthase activity in the medial head of gastrocnemius muscle. No differences between the effects of two training regimens were observed. However, in contrast to constant-speed training the interval one resulted in myocardium hypertrophy and also in less pronounced changes in diaphragm muscle, such as slow-direction shift of myosin phenotype and reduction of muscle fiber cross-sectional area. Neither of the training regimens had an effect on corticosterone and thyroid hormones levels in rat blood, whereas the interval training resulted in a higher level of testosterone. Anabolic influence of testosterone during interval aerobic training may be favorable for heart hemodynamic capacity and force characteristics of the diaphragm.  相似文献

Hyperthermia and central fatigue during prolonged exercise in humans.   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
The present study investigated the effects of hyperthermia on the contributions of central and peripheral factors to the development of neuromuscular fatigue. Fourteen men exercised at 60% maximal oxygen consumption on a cycle ergometer in hot (40 degrees C; hyperthermia) and thermoneutral (18 degrees C; control) environments. In hyperthermia, the core temperature increased throughout the exercise period and reached a peak value of 40.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C (mean +/- SE) at exhaustion after 50 +/- 3 min of exercise. In control, core temperature stabilized at approximately 38.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C, and exercise was maintained for 1 h without exhausting the subjects. Immediately after the cycle trials, subjects performed 2 min of sustained maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) either with the exercised legs (knee extension) or with a "nonexercised" muscle group (handgrip). The degree of voluntary activation during sustained maximal knee extensions was assessed by superimposing electrical stimulation (EL) to nervus femoralis. Voluntary knee extensor force was similar during the first 5 s of contraction in hyperthermia and control. Thereafter, force declined in both trials, but the reduction in maximal voluntary force was more pronounced in the hyperthermic trial, and, from 30 to 120 s, the force was significantly lower in hyperthermia compared with control. Calculation of the voluntary activation percentage (MVC/MVC + EL) revealed that the degree of central activation was significantly lower in hyperthermia (54 +/- 7%) compared with control (82 +/- 6%). In contrast, total force of the knee extensors (MVC + force from EL) was not different in the two trials. Force development during handgrip contraction followed the same pattern of response as was observed for the knee extensors. In conclusion, these data demonstrate that the ability to generate force during a prolonged MVC is attenuated with hyperthermia, and the impaired performance is associated with a reduction in the voluntary activation percentage.  相似文献

Assessment of intra-session repeatability of muscle activation pattern is of considerable relevance for research settings, especially when used to determine changes over time. However, the repeatability of lower limb muscles activation pattern during pedaling is not fully established. Thus, we tested the intra-session repeatability of the activation pattern of 10 lower limb muscles during a sub-maximal cycling exercise.Eleven triathletes participated to this study. The experimental session consisted in a reference sub-maximal cycling exercise (i.e. 150 W) performed before and after a 53-min simulated training session (mean power output = 200 ± 12 W). Repeatability of EMG patterns was assessed in terms of muscle activity level (i.e. RMS of the mean pedaling cycle and burst) and muscle activation timing (i.e. onset and offset of the EMG burst) for the 10 following lower limb muscles: gluteus maximus (GMax), semimembranosus (SM), Biceps femoris (BF), vastus medialis (VM), rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), gastrocnemius medianus (GM) and lateralis (GL), soleus (SOL) and tibialis anterior (TA).No significant differences concerning the muscle activation level were found between test and retest for all the muscles investigated. Only VM, SOL and TA showed significant differences in muscle activation timing parameters. Whereas ICC and SEM values confirmed this weak repeatability, cross-correlation coefficients suggest a good repeatability of the activation timing parameters for all the studied muscles.Overall, the main finding of this work is the good repeatability of the EMG pattern during pedaling both in term of muscle activity level and muscle activation timing.  相似文献

Muscles actuate movement by generating forces. The forces generated by muscles are highly dependent on their fibre lengths, yet it is difficult to measure the lengths over which muscle fibres operate during movement. We combined experimental measurements of joint angles and muscle activation patterns during walking with a musculoskeletal model that captures the relationships between muscle fibre lengths, joint angles and muscle activations for muscles of the lower limb. We used this musculoskeletal model to produce a simulation of muscle-tendon dynamics during walking and calculated fibre operating lengths (i.e. the length of muscle fibres relative to their optimal fibre length) for 17 lower limb muscles. Our results indicate that when musculotendon compliance is low, the muscle fibre operating length is determined predominantly by the joint angles and muscle moment arms. If musculotendon compliance is high, muscle fibre operating length is more dependent on activation level and force-length-velocity effects. We found that muscles operate on multiple limbs of the force-length curve (i.e. ascending, plateau and descending limbs) during the gait cycle, but are active within a smaller portion of their total operating range.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to estimate the differences in neuromuscular fatigue among prolonged pedalling exercises performed at different pedalling rates at a given exercise intensity. The integrated electromyogram (iEMG) slope defined by the changes in iEMG as a function of time during exercise was adopted as the measurement for estimating neuromuscular fatigue. The results of this experiment showed that the relationship between pedalling rate and the means of the iEMG slopes for eight subjects was a quadratic curve and the mean value at 70 rpm [1.56 (SD 0.65) V·min–1] was significantly smaller (P < 0.01) than that at 50 and 60 rpm [2.25 (SD 0.54), and 2.22 (SD 0.68), respectively]. On the other hand, the mean value of oxygen consumption obtained simultaneously showed a tendency to increase linearly with the increase in pedalling rate, and the values at 70 and 80 rpm were significantly higher than those at 40 and 50 rpm. In conclusion, it was demonstrated that the degree of neuromuscular fatigue estimated by the iEMG changes for five periods of prolonged pedalling exercise at a given exercise intensity was different among the different pedalling rates, and that the pedalling rate at which minimal neuromuscular fatigue was obtained was not coincident with the rate at which the minimal oxygen consumption was obtained, but was coincident with the rate which most subjects preferred. These findings would suggest that the reason why most people prefer a relative higher pedalling rate, even though higher oxygen consumption is required, is closely related to the development of neuromuscular fatigue in the working muscles.  相似文献

Seven cyclists exercised at 70% of maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) until fatigue (170 +/- 9 min) on three occasions, 1 wk apart. During these trials, plasma glucose declined from 5.0 +/- 0.1 to 3.1 +/- 0.1 mM (P less than 0.001) and respiratory exchange ratio (R) fell from 0.87 +/- 0.01 to 0.81 +/- 0.01 (P less than 0.001). After resting 20 min the subjects attempted to continue exercise either 1) after ingesting a placebo, 2) after ingesting glucose polymers (3 g/kg), or 3) when glucose was infused intravenously ("euglycemic clamp"). Placebo ingestion did not restore euglycemia or R. Plasma glucose increased (P less than 0.001) initially to approximately 5 mM and R rose (P less than 0.001) to approximately 0.83 with glucose infusion or carbohydrate ingestion. Plasma glucose and R then fell gradually to 3.9 +/- 0.3 mM and 0.81 +/- 0.01, respectively, after carbohydrate ingestion but were maintained at 5.1 +/- 0.1 mM and 0.83 +/- 0.01, respectively, by glucose infusion. Time to fatigue during this second exercise bout was significantly longer during the carbohydrate ingestion (26 +/- 4 min; P less than 0.05) or glucose infusion (43 +/- 5 min; P less than 0.01) trials compared with the placebo trial (10 +/- 1 min). Plasma insulin (approximately 10 microU/ml) and vastus lateralis muscle glycogen (approximately 40 mmol glucosyl U/kg) did not change during glucose infusion, with three-fourths of total carbohydrate oxidation during the second exercise bout accounted for by the euglycemic glucose infusion rate (1.13 +/- 0.08 g/min).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effect of prolonged exercise on the glycogen level in the respiratory muscles (diaphragm--D, external intercostal--IE and internal--II) has been studied in four groups of rats: 1-control, 2-fasted for 24 h, 3-treated with nicotinic acid and 4-treated with propranolol. There was a sharp reduction in glycogen level in each muscle after 30 min exercise in the control and fasted groups. Exercise till exhaustion further lowered the glycogen level in D in the control group and in IE and II in the fasted group. In the fasted group, the level of glycogen in each muscle, at rest, and after 30 min exercise, and in IE and II muscles after exercise till exhaustion was lower than in the control group. Nicotinic acid did not affect the glycogen level either at rest or during exercise as compared with the control group. Propranolol increased the glycogen level in the muscles at rest and during 30 min exercise. It partially prevented glycogen mobilization in D and IE and fully in II during exercise till exhaustion. In the control group, 24 and 48 h after exercise till exhaustion, the level of glycogen in each muscle exceeded the resting control value. It is concluded that exercise-induced glycogen metabolism in the respiratory muscles differs in some respects from that in the limb or heart muscles.  相似文献

The mitochondrial content of skeletal muscles is proportional to activity level, with the assumption that intrinsic mitochondrial function is the same in all muscles. This may not hold true for all muscles. For example, the diaphragm is a constantly active muscle; it is possible that its mitochondria are intrinsically different compared with other muscles. This study tested the hypothesis that mitochondrial respiration rates are greater in the diaphragm compared with triceps surae (TS, a limb muscle). We isolated mitochondria from diaphragm and TS of adult male Sprague Dawley rats. Mitochondrial respiration was measured by polarography. The contents of respiratory complexes, uncoupling proteins 1, 2, and 3 (UCP1, UCP2, and UCP3), and voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1) were determined by immunoblotting. Complex IV activity was measured by spectrophotometry. Mitochondrial respiration states 3 (substrate and ADP driven) and 5 (uncoupled) were 27 ± 8% and 24 ± 10%, respectively, lower in diaphragm than in TS (P < 0.05 for both comparisons). However, the contents of respiratory complexes III, IV, and V, UCP1, and VDAC1 were higher in diaphragm mitochondria (23 ± 6, 30 ± 8, 25 ± 8, 36 ± 15, and 18 ± 8% respectively, P ≤ 0.04 for all comparisons). Complex IV activity was 64 ± 16% higher in diaphragm mitochondria (P ≤ 0.01). Mitochondrial UCP2 and UCP3 content and complex I activity were not different between TS and diaphragm. These data indicate that diaphragm mitochondria respire at lower rates, despite a higher content of respiratory complexes. The results invalidate our initial hypothesis and indicate that mitochondrial content is not the only determinant of aerobic capacity in the diaphragm. We propose that UCP1 and VDAC1 play a role in regulating diaphragm aerobic capacity.  相似文献

The time course of alteration in neuromuscular function of the knee extensor muscles was characterized during a prolonged intermittent exercise. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and surface EMG activity of both vastii were measured during brief interruptions before (T0), during (30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 min: T30, T60, T90, T120, T150, T180) and 30 min after (T+30) a 3 h tennis match in 12 trained players. M-wave and twitch contractile properties were analyzed following single stimuli. Short tetani at 20 Hz and 80 Hz were also applied to six subjects at T0 and T180. Significant reductions in MVC (P < 0.05; −9%) and electromyographic activity normalized to the M wave for both vastii (P < 0.01) occurred with fatigue at T180. No significant changes in M-wave duration and amplitude nor in twitch contractile properties were observed. The ratio between the torques evoked by 20 Hz and 80 Hz stimulation declined significantly (P < 0.001; −12%) after exercise. Central activation failure and alterations in excitation–contraction coupling are probable mechanisms contributing to the moderate impairment of the neuromuscular function during prolonged tennis playing.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated the differential influence of chronic treadmill training (30 m/min, 15% incline, 1 h/day, 5 days/wk) on nitric oxide (NO) production and NO synthase (NOS) isoform expression as well as 3-nitrotyrosine formation (footprint of peroxynitrite) both in limb (gastrocnemius) and ventilatory (diaphragm) muscles. A group of exercise-trained rats and a control group (no training) were examined after a 4-wk experimental period. Exercise training elicited an approximate fourfold rise in gastrocnemius NOS activity and augmented protein expression of the endothelial (eNOS) and neuronal (nNOS) isoforms of NOS to approximately 480% and 240%, respectively. Qualitatively similar but quantitatively smaller elevations in NOS activity and eNOS and nNOS expression were observed in the diaphragm. No detectable inducible NOS (iNOS) protein expression was found in any of the muscle samples. Training increased the intensity of 3-nitrotyrosine only in the gastrocnemius muscle. We conclude that whole body exercise training enhances both limb and ventilatory muscle NO production and that constitutive and not iNOS isoforms are responsible for increased protein tyrosine nitration in trained limb muscles.  相似文献

Premature lacticacidosis during exercise in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease (COPD) may play a role in exercise intolerance. In this study,we evaluated whether the early exercise-induced lactic acidosis inthese individuals can be explained by changes in peripheralO2 delivery(O2).Measurements of leg blood flow by thermodilution and of arterial andfemoral venous blood gases, pH, and lactate were obtained during astandard incremental exercise test to capacity in eight patients withsevere COPD and in eight age-matched controls. No significantdifference was found between the two groups in leg blood flow at restor during exercise at the same power outputs. Blood lactateconcentrations and lactate release from the lower limb were greater inCOPD patients at all submaximal exercise levels (allP < 0.05). LegO2at a given power output was not significantly different between the twogroups, and no significant correlation was found between this parameterand blood lactate concentrations. COPD patients had lower arterial andvenous pH at submaximal exercise, and there was a significant positivecorrelation between venous pH at 40 W and the peakO2 uptake(r = 0.91, P < 0.0001). The correlation betweenvenous pH and peak O2 uptakesuggests that early muscle acidosis may be involved in early exercisetermination in COPD patients. The early lactate release from the lowerlimb during exercise could not be accounted for by changes inperipheralO2. The present results point to skeletal muscle dysfunction as being responsible for the early onset of lactic acidosis inCOPD.

Lower limb amputees (LLAs) have less skin surface required for sweating; thus, the ability to dissipate heat from the body may decrease and the risk of heat illness may increase during exercise in a hot environment. However, no study has compared the thermoregulatory responses during exercise between LLAs and able-body (AB) individuals with different body surface areas. This study aimed to compare the thermoregulatory responses of LLAs with those of AB individuals during exercise in a hot environment. Seven LLAs (LLA group) and 7 able-body individuals (AB group) participated in the study. A 60% peak power output of arm crank upper-body exercise was performed for 60 min in a hot environment (32 °C, 50% relative humidity). There was no difference in the increase in rectal temperature (LLA: 0.8 ± 0.2 °C, AB: 0.8  ± 0.2 °C) and mean skin temperature between the groups during the 60-min exercise. In the LLA group, the accumulated local sweat rate of the thigh during exercise was significantly higher on the non-cut side than on the cut side (64.6 ± 43.0 mg/h vs. 37.0 ± 27.2 mg/h, p < 0.05). The total sweat rate was significantly higher in the LLA group than in the AB group (1.18 ± 0.37 kg/h vs. 0.84 ± 0.10 kg/h, p < 0.05). Thermal sensation and comfort were lower in the LLA group than in the AB group. Different heat loss responses were observed in the AB and LLA groups during exercise in the heat. The LLA group compensates for sweating on the cut side due to an increase in sweat loss on the intact limb, thereby preserving appropriate thermoregulation during exercise.  相似文献

ObjectiveInvestigate the influence of apprehensive gait on activation and cocontraction of lower limb muscles of younger and older female adults.MethodsData of 17 younger (21.47 ± 2.06 yr) and 18 older women (65.33 ± 3.14 yr) were considered for this study. Participants walked on the treadmill at two different conditions: normal gait and apprehensive gait. The surface electromyographic signals (EMG) were recorded during both conditions on: rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), gastrocnemius lateralis (GL), and soleus (SO).ResultsApprehensive gait promoted greater activation of thigh muscles than normal gait (F = 5.34 and p = 0.007, for significant main effect of condition; RF, p = 0.002; VM, p < 0.001; VL, p = 0.003; and BF, p = 0.001). Older adults had greater cocontraction of knee and ankle stabilizer muscles than younger women (F = 4.05 and p = 0.019, for significant main effect of groups; VM/BF, p = 0.010; TA/GL, p = 0.007; and TA/SO, p = 0.002).ConclusionApprehensive gait promoted greater activation of thigh muscles and older adults had greater cocontraction of knee and ankle stabilizer muscles. Thus, apprehensive gait may leads to increased percentage of neuromuscular capacity, which is associated with greater cocontraction and contribute to the onset of fatigue and increased risk of falling in older people.  相似文献

The effects of menstrual cycle phase and carbohydrate (CHO) supplementation were investigated during prolonged exercise. Nine healthy, moderately trained women cycled at 70% peak O(2) consumption until exhaustion. Two trials were completed during the follicular (Fol) and luteal (Lut) phases of the menstrual cycle. Subjects consumed 0.6 g CHO. kg body wt(-1). h(-1) (5 ml/kg of a 6% CHO solution every 30 min beginning at min 30 of exercise) or a placebo drink (Pl) during exercise. Time to exhaustion during CHO increased from Pl values (P < 0.05) by 14.4 +/- 8.5 (Fol) and 11.4 +/- 7.1% (Lut); no differences were observed between menstrual cycle phases. CHO attenuated (P < 0.05) the decrease in plasma glucose and insulin and the increase in plasma free fatty acids, tryptophan, epinephrine, and cortisol observed during Pl for both phases. Plasma alanine, glutamine, proline, and isoleucine were lower (P < 0.05) in Lut than in Fol phase. CHO resulted in lower (P < 0.05) plasma tyrosine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, and phenylalanine. These results indicate that the menstrual cycle phase does not alter the effects of CHO supplementation on performance and plasma levels of related substrates during prolonged exercise.  相似文献

Despite the wide use of surface electromyography (EMG) recorded during dynamic exercises, the reproducibility of EMG variables has not been fully established in a course of a dynamic leg exercise. The aim of this study was to investigate the reproducibility of eight lower limb muscles activity level during a pedaling exercise performed until exhaustion. Eight male were tested on two days held three days apart. Surface EMG was recorded from vastus lateralis, rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis, semimembranosus, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius lateral, gastrocnemius medianus and tibialis anterior during incremental exercise test. The root mean square, an index of global EMG activity, was averaged every five crank revolutions (corresponding to about 3 s at 85 rpm) throughout the tests. Despite inter-subjects variations, we showed a high reproducibility of the activity level of lower limb muscles during a progressive pedaling exercise performed until exhaustion. However, RF muscle seemed to be the less reproducible of the eight muscles investigated during incremental pedaling exercise. These results suggest that each subject adopt a personal muscle activation strategy in a course of an incremental cycling exercise but fatigue phenomenon can induce some variations in the most fatigable muscles (RF).  相似文献
