Ornithosaponins A-D, four new polyoxygenated steroidal glycosides from the bulbs of Ornithogalumthyrsoides

By analyzing the steroidal glycoside content of fresh bulbs of Ornithogalum thyrsoides (Liliaceae), we were able to isolate four new polyoxygenated steroidal glycosides, which we named ornithosaponins A-D (1-4). The structures of 1-4 were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis, including that of 2D NMR data, and the results of acidic or alkaline hydrolysis. The aglycone structure of 1-4 has not been previously reported. It is also notable that ornithosaponins B-D (2-4) have been found to contain 6-deoxy-beta-D-gulopyranose as a sugar component, which is rarely encountered in plant glycosides.     

Stereumin A-E, sesquiterpenoids from the fungus Stereum sp. CCTCC AF 207024

Five cadinane sesquiterpenoids, named stereumin A (1), B (2), C (3), D (4) and E (5) were isolated from the CHCl(3) extract of the culture broth of the fungal strain CCTCC AF 207024. Based on the sequences at the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and partial 28S rDNA, this fungus was identified as a Stereum sp. The structures of the five compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic data from 1D, 2D NMR and HRESIMS experiments, and the structures of 1 and 2 were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Compounds 1-5 showed nematicidal activities against the nematode Panagrellus redivivus at 400 mg l(-1). Among these five compounds, compounds 3 and 4 killed 84.4% and 94.9% of P. redivivus, respectively in 48 h.     

Cimiracemates A-D,phenylpropanoid esters from the rhizomes of Cimicifuga racemosa

Four phenylpropanoid esters, cimiracemates A-D (1-4), along with three known compounds, isoferulic acid, ferulic acid and methyl caffeate were isolated from the EtOAc fraction of the rhizome of Cimicifuga racemosa. The structures of the esters were elucidated by means of spectral data, including 2D NMR spectroscopy.     

5H-furan-2-ones from fungal cultures of Aporpium caryae

Four furanones 1-4 with an unusual skeleton containing an acetylene unit, named aporpinones, were isolated from the culture of the basidiomycete Aporpium caryae and their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. Compounds 3 and 4 showed weak to moderate antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.     

Cryptoporic and isocryptoporic acids from the fungal cultures of Polyporus arcularius and P. ciliatus

In a chemical study of several fungal cultures of Polyporus, a methyl ester of cryptoporic H was isolated from P. ciliatus, together with cryptoporic acid H and 5-hydroxymethylfuran-3-carboxylic acid. Furthermore, two additional compounds, named isocryptoporic acids H and I, were isolated from P. arcularius. These isocryptoporic acids are isomers of the cryptoporic acids with drimenol instead of albicanol as the terpenoid fragment; their structural elucidation was determined by application of spectroscopic methods.     

Six naphthylisoquinoline alkaloids and a related benzopyranone from a Congolese Ancistrocladus species related to Ancistrocladus congolensis

From the roots of a recently discovered Ancistrocladus taxon, with close affinities to Ancistrocladus congolensis regarding molecular ITS sequence data, six naphthylisoquinoline alkaloids, 5'-O-demethylhamatine (2), 5'-O-demethylhamatinine (3), 6-O-demethylancistroealaine A (4), 6,5'-O,O-didemethylancistroealaine A (5), 5-epi-6-O-methylancistrobertsonine A (6), and 5-epi-4'-O-demethylancistrobertsonine C (7), have been isolated, along with a likewise benzopyranone carboxylic acid, 8. The structural elucidation succeeded by chemical, spectroscopic, and chiroptical methods. Their bioactivities were tested against protozoan parasites causing severe tropical diseases. Furthermore, eight known related alkaloids were identified.     

Structural characterization of a polysaccharide and a beta-glucan isolated from the edible mushroom Flammulina velutipes

Two polysaccharides were isolated from the basidiomycete Flammulina velutipes, via successive hot extraction with water, 2% and 25% aq. KOH, and then submitted to freeze-drying. The precipitate formed by repeated freeze-thawing from the 2% aq. KOH extraction PK2 was analyzed by determination of its monosaccharide composition, as well as by methylation analyses using GC-MS, mono- ((13)C, (1)H NMR) and bidimensional ((1)H (obs.), (13)C HMQC) spectroscopy, and controlled Smith degradations. It was established to be a branched beta-glucan, with a main chain of (1-->3)-linked-Glcp residues, substituted at O-6 by single-unit beta-Glcp side chains. The precipitate formed by repeated freeze-thawing from the 25% KOH extraction PK25 contained Xyl, Man, and Glc and was heterogeneous by HSPEC and extraction with DMSO gave a soluble xylomannan (XM). It was homogeneous with a molar mass 30.8 x 10(4)g/mol (dn/dc=0.186). Using the above chemical analyses, it was a xylomannan with Man and Xyl in a 3:2 molar ratio. Its main chain consisted of (1-->3)-linked alpha-Manp units, mainly substituted at O-4 by beta-Xylp units or with some beta-Xylp-(1-->3)-beta-Xylp groups.     

Chromone and chromanone glucosides from Hypericumsikokumontanum and their anti-Helicobacter pylori activities

Chromone glucosides, takanechromones A-C (1, 2 and 5) and chromanone glucosides, named takanechromanones A and B (3 and 4), were isolated from the methanolic extracts of Hypericumsikokumontanum together with 27 known compounds. Their structures were established based on spectroscopic evidence. The isolated compounds and some chromone derivatives were assayed for antimicrobial activity against Helicobacter pylori and cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines.     

Two new species of Amblypsilopus Bigot with a key to species from Taiwan (Diptera, Dolichopodidae)

The following two new species of the genus Amblypsilopus Bigot from Taiwan are described: Amblypsilopus flavellussp. n. and Amblypsilopus ventralissp. n. One species, Amblypsilopus crassatus Yang, 1997, is newly reported from Taiwan. A key to the species of the genus from Taiwan is given.     

JM47, a cyclic tetrapeptide HC-toxin analogue from a marine Fusarium species

The known metabolite, enniatin B, and a cyclic tetrapeptide, JM47, which is a new natural product, were extracted from brown rice cultures of a marine fungus, identified as a Fusarium species, isolated from the marine alga Codium fragile. NMR studies, including 15N HMQC and 15N HMBC, established the structure of JM47 as cyclo(Ala-Ala-Aoh-Pro), where Aoh is the amino acid, (2S,9S)-2-amino-8-oxo-9-hydroxydecanoic acid. The absolute stereochemistry of the Aoh side chain carbinol centre was determined using Mosher ester methodology. Analysis of NOESY data assisted by molecular modelling revealed an alternating L-, D-, L-, D-configuration for the tetrapeptide core. The absolute stereochemistry of the core was determined by acidic hydrolysis and chiral TLC analysis of the proline residue. JM47 belongs to the HC-toxin family of cyclic tetrapeptides which possess a 2-amino-8-oxo-9,10-epoxydecanoic acid residue in place of the Aoh unit. This is the first report of an analogue of HC-toxin from a marine Fusarium species.     

Review of the species of Michotamia from China with a description of a new species (Diptera, Asilidae)

Three species of Michotamia are recorded from China. Of these Michotamia aurata (Fabricius, 1794) was previously reported from Hainan and Taiwan. Michotamia assamensis Joseph & Parui, 1995 is recorded from China and Laos for the first time, and Michotamia yunnanensissp. n., is described and figured. A key to the known species from China is provided. A new name, Michotamia subnigra, is given to Michotamia nigra Scarbrough & Hill, 2000, which is preoccupied by Michotamia nigra (Meijere, 1911).     

Phylogenetic analysis of Cystoisospora species at the rRNA ITS1 locus and development of a PCR-RFLP assay

The ITS1 sequences for C. suis, C. belli, C. rivolta, C. felis, and C. ohioensis-like oocysts were determined and a diagnostic PCR-RFLP assay specific for Cystosisopora species was developed. Phylogenetic analysis of ITS1 sequences of Cystosisopora species along with ITS1 sequences for Toxoplasma, Neospora, Sarcocystis and Eimeria spp. using distance, minimum evolution and parsimony-based methods confirmed previous studies, which suggested that the genus Cystoisospora does not belong to the family Eimeriidae, but should be classified together with the cyst-forming coccidia in the family Sarcocystidae.     

Absolute configuration of tropane alkaloids from Schizanthus species by vibrational circular dichroism

The absolute configuration (AC) of 6β-hydroxy-3α-senecioyloxytropane (1), 3α-hydroxy-6β-tigloyloxytropane (2), 3α-hydroxy-6β-senecioyloxytropane (3), and 3α-hydroxy-6β-angeloyloxytropane (4) was assigned as (1R,3R,5S,6R) using density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/DGDZVP level of theory in combination with experimental vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) measurements and comparison with the spectra of similar tropanes. The AC of 1 followed from a sample isolated from Schizanthus grahamii, while those of the mixture of 2 and 3, isolated from the same source, were determined by comparing the VCD measurement to a weighted calculation of the individual VCD spectra according to a 69:31 ratio of 2:3 determined by ¹H NMR signal integration. In turn, Schizanthus pinnatus provided a 7:3 mixture of 1:4 whose AC was determined using the experimental VCD absorptions in the 1150-950 cm⁻¹ spectral region which were compared with those observed for 1-3 and with those described for other 3α,6β-tropanediol derivatives.     

A new species of ferret-badger, Genus Melogale, from Vietnam

Ferret-badgers, genus Melogale, are distributed in the Indochinese region, Java, Bali and NE-Borneo. There are currently four species described each having very similar phenotypes. In March 2005, a living ferret-badger of a different phenotype was confiscated by rangers from Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam. This individual died and the carcass was not preserved. In January 2006, a newly deceased individual of the same phenotype was found at the Endangered Primate Rescue Center, Cuc Phuong National Park. Due to several different characteristics these individuals vary greatly from the current species. Thus, we describe an additional species, M. cucphuongensis sp. nov. from northern Vietnam, which occurs sympatrically with M. moschata and M. personata, but differs from both species clearly in skull morphology and other features.Based on a 423 bp-long fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene, M. cucphuongensis sp. nov. is a member of the genus Melogale and represents a sister lineage to a clade consisting of M. personata and M. moschata.     

Description of two new species of Cossidae (Lepidoptera) from China

Two new Cossidaespecies from China's Zhejiang and Sichuan provinces are described. The new species Phragmataecia monikasp. n.and Patoptoformis rimsaitesp. n. superficially resemble related congeners but can be distinguished by differences in wing pattern, genitalia and distribution. Checklists of the genera Phragmataecia and Patoptoformis are presented.     

A review of Rheocricotopus (Psilocricotopus) chalybeatus species group from China,with the description of three new species (Diptera,Chironomidae)

The Rheocricotopus (Psilocricotopus) chalybeatus species group from China is reviewed. Three new species, R. (P.) brochus sp. n., R. (P.) rotundus sp. n. and R. (P.) serratus sp. n. are described as adult males. R. (P.) imperfectus Makarchenko & Makarchenko, 2005, R. (P.) robacki (Beck & Beck, 1964) and R. (P.) valgus Chaudhuri & Sinharay, 1983 are recorded from China for the first time and annotated. The diagnosis for the species group is emended and a key to adult males of the species group in China is presented.     

A new species of Ocydromia Meigen from China,with a key to species from the Palaearctic and Oriental Regions (Diptera,Empidoidea, Ocydromiinae)

Previously only one species of the genus Ocydromia Meigen was recorded from China. Here a second species of the genus from China, Ocydromia shanxiensis sp. n., is reported. A key to the species of the genus from the Palaearctic and Oriental regions is presented.     

A new species of Megoura (Hemiptera,Aphididae) from Japan

A new species of the genus Megoura, M. lathyricola sp. n., was collected from Lathyrus japonicus subsp. japonicus (Leguminosae) in seashore areas of northern and southern Japan. This species is described and illustrated, and a revised key to the identification of the world species of Megoura is presented.     

Taxonomic studies on genus Tetramorium Mayr (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) with report of two new species and three new records including a tramp species from India with a revised key

Two new species of Tetramorium Mayr, namely Tetramorium shivalikensesp. n. and Tetramorium triangulatumsp. n. are described. Tetramorium triangulatumsp. n. belongs to the inglebyi-species group and is described based on worker, queen and male caste, while Tetramorium shivalikensesp. n. belongs to the ciliatum-species group and is described based on worker caste only. Three species viz., Tetramorium caldarium (Roger), Tetramorium tonganum Mayr and Tetramorium urbanii Bolton represent first records from India. The male caste is described for the first time in the case of Tetramorium tonganum. Among these, Tetramorium caldarium is a tramp species which extends its limit to India as well. A revised key to the Indian ants of this genus is also provided herewith.
