Data on feeding and the incidence of reproduction disorders in dairy cattle were collected and compared between 2 groups composed of 6 Kibutz dairy herds each. One group contained herds picked at random from dairies with a good overall conception rate (45% and above according to rectal pregnancy examinations) and the other group was randomly selected from those with a low overall conception rate (32% and below). The two groups differed significantly in the incidences of repeat breeder cows (5.48% and 27.35%, respectively), the percentage of problem cows not pregnant 150 days after parturition (14.62% and 38.8%), days to conception (98.5 and 113.7 days), percentage of cows culled due to infertility (5.6% and 15.33%), and in the feeding practices.During the first half of lactation (the high production period) the differences occurred in the amount of digestible protein (11.9% and 9.9% of total dry matter) and in the amount of roughage (33.5% and 20.3% of total dry matter) fed. During the second half of lactation the significant differences between the 2 groups were in the energy level (16.5 F.U. and 13.6 F.U.) and digestible protein fed (10.25% and 8.73% of total dry matter), as well as in the total dry matter fed (17.7 Kg and 15.1 Kg). In the dry period, the only significant difference was in the total dry matter fed (12.7 Kg and 10.5 Kg).It appears that the incidence of repeat breeder cows is influenced by nutritional factors, particularly by the roughage, protein, and energy levels. Proper amounts of these three constituents in the ration during the entire inter-valving period is essential for providing appropriate fertility levels in high producing dairy herds.  相似文献

A field study was performed using 15 Kibutz dairy herds, in which 4195 cows situated in northern Israel were milked to determine the influence of climatological factors and nutritional regimes on the conception rate during the summer period (July-September). The Overall Conception Rate (OCR) during summer was 28.2% (17.3-41.9%) compared to 40% in the spring (May-June). The conception rate from first inseminations (CRl) was 31.3% during summer and 45.3% during spring. The OCR of the nullipara heifers in the same herds was 59.2% in summer and 60.4% in spring. The OCR in summer was negatively correlated with the minimum temperature (r=-0.53), the relative humidity at 0800 hrs. (r=-0.47), and the relative humidity at 1400 hrs (r=-0.49), whereas the CRl during summer was negatively correlated only with the minimum temperature (r=-0.51). In 12 (13) feeding groups of cows examined in 6 herds, no correlation was found between rectal temperatures and the actual milk productions of the cows. In 14 (15) herds, the milk production in summer was lower than in spring; the decrease varied from 0.9%-18.2% (average 7.8%). A highly significant negative correlation was found between the OCR and the various parameters of protein intake: grams of crude protein/cow/day, grams of crude protein/kg FCM/day, and percentage of protein from total dry matter. Particularly high correlations were found between the OCR and the average amounts of protein/kg FCM/day in milk of all cows (r=-0.84).  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine feeding factors connected with differences in the fertility of Israeli Kibbutz dairy herds. In an epidemiological case-control survey, data from 30, low-fertility Kibbutz dairy herds having a mean overall conception rate of 35% in multiparous cows were compared with the data from 30, high-fertility Kibbutz dairy herds having a mean overall conception rate of 48% in multiparous cows. Nutritional factors accounted for 67% of the differences between low-fertility and high-fertility herds in the overall conception rate of multiparous cows, while only 4.8% could be related to the body condition during the dry period. Among the factors which occurred more frequently in the low-fertility than in the high-fertility herds were 1) a higher average protein density and lower energy/protein ratio was fed during lactation and 2) a single feeding group was maintained for all lactating cows. 3) There were phytoestrogens in the silage or alfalfa hay, fed during lactation. 4) Faulty dry period was instituted, which was defined as the presence of at least one of the following three practices: a) the daily feed was above 3 kg of high lactation mix; b) more than 15 Mcal of net energy per day was given during the first part of the dry period; c) more than 30% of the cows were obese during the dry period. Three or more risk factors were found in one high-fertility herd and in 20 low-fertility herds. This finding emphasizes the importance of identifying and removing risk factors as a possible means for improving the reproductive performance of herds.  相似文献

An epidemiological study was conducted in 18 dairy herds with the objective to characterize those groups of cows where skin injuries to the body and thighs occurred most frequently. Data were analyzed with multivariable logistic regression. The epidemiologic patterns were different in first and later lactations. In first lactation some degree of injury occurred among 7.7% of 1793 cows. For most cows occurrence of sole ulcer was positively associated with injury while occurrence of heel horn erosion was negatively associated with injury. The association between injury and body weight differed depending on month of calving (significant interaction). Injuries occurred most frequently among high yielding cows. Severe reproductive, metabolic, and/or infectious diseases were associated with injuries. In later lactations some degree of injury occurred among 13.4% of 832 cows in lactations 2 to 9 where severity of injury increased with lactation number. Injuries occurred least frequently at examinations made in the January to March. They occurred most frequently among cows with sole ulcers. Calving in March through October was associated with injuries especially if the cows were treated for limb disorders. Most cases of injuries occurred early or late in lactation or among high or very low yielding cows in lactations 2 to 9.  相似文献

The effects of milk yield, body condition score (BCS) and lactation number on the number of oocytes recovered and blastocysts formed were studied following in vitro maturation, fertilization and culture of bovine oocytes collected from 48 high and 46 medium genetic merit dairy cows in their first and third lactation. The cows were slaughtered between 125 and 229 d post partum. Ovaries were recovered, and 2- to 10-mm follicles were aspirated. Cleavage rate and number of blastocysts were determined at 44 h and 7 d after insemination, respectively. Oocytes from high genetic merit cows formed fewer blastocysts and had lower cleavage and blastocyst formation rates than those from medium genetic merit cows (0.36 +/- 0.19, 70.4 and 6.8% vs 0.85 +/- 0.22, 77.4 and 11.4%, respectively). The effect of milk production was tested by grouping cows in their third lactation into high and low groups. There was no difference in number of oocytes recovered and subsequent development into blastocysts between the cows in the high milk production group (4559 to 5114 kg, n = 20) and cows in the low yield (3162 to 3972 kg, n = 20) group (6.9 +/- 1.34 vs 8.9 +/- 1.32, respectively). The effect of BCS was tested by grouping cows in their first or third lactation into high and low groups. Cleavage and blastocyst formation rates were greater for oocytes from cows with a high BCS (3.3 to 4.0, n = 20) than a low BCS (1.5 to 2.5, n = 20) (75.7 vs 61.9% and 9.9 vs 3.0%, respectively). Cows in the first lactation yielded fewer oocytes (5.7 +/- 1.24) than cows in the third lactation (7.8 +/- 0.79). Thus, the quality of oocytes probably contributes to reduced fertility, often evident in high genetic merit dairy cows.  相似文献

Cows fed 0.37 Kg crude protein per day for four months before calving showed no decrease in colostral IgG, IgA, or IgM from cows fed a normal ration. Similarly, no difference in serum immunoglobulin concentration was detected in their calves. Cows in the low protein group developed significantly lower (P < 0.01) titers to Salmonella pullorum antigen than did the normal group. The data show significant positive linear regressions of calf agglutination titer to S. pullorum on the dam's colostral titers. Serum levels of IgG measured at 24 hours were significantly lower in calves from second-calf heifers than from these of other age groups. The IgA levels of serums from calves from the six-year-old cows were significantly higher than the serum levels of calves from younger dams (P < 0.01).  相似文献

Effects on reproduction in a total of 135 dairy cows managed for calving intervals of 12, 15 or 18 months (72, 38 and 25 cows respectively) were studied. The cows were of the Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB) and the Swedish Freisian Breed (SLB) and were housed in 2 different herds with 3 different management systems (tied, loose, and tied but milked in a milking parlour; mixed). The cows in one of the herds (48 cows) were assigned for milking either 2 times or 3 times a day. When comparing conception rate at 1st insemination (AI) and the percentage of cows finally pregnant, we found no significant differences between the 3 calving interval groups, however, a tendency for a higher conception rate with a 15 months' interval compared with a 12 months' interval was found in one of the herds (50% vs 41.5%). The percentage of finally pregnant animals varied between 81% and 100%, but this variation was mainly attributed to the herd rather than calving interval group. A significantly higher percentage of cows was treated for anoestrous in the 12-month group than in the 15-month group in one of the herds (28.6% vs. 5.3%). The frequency of ovulations with external heat signs increased with ovulation number up to the 4th ovulation and thereafter remained stable. No significant difference was found in number of AIs required per conception with respect to calving intervals, breeds, or milking frequency groups. However, cows milked 3 times a day had a significantly longer interval from the 1 st AI to conception compared with cows milked 2 times a day (45.8 days vs 17.6 days, p<.01). Cows kept loose exhibited 1st ovulatory oestrous, approximately 2 weeks earlier (55.9 days vs 69.7 days, p<.05) than their herd mates kept tied. In conclusion, our study shows that lengthening the calving interval to 15 or 18 months may have a positive influence on reproduction in terms of less need for treatments of ovarian disorders and higher conception rates. Our results also indicate that milking 3 times a day may have negative effects, and keeping cows in a loose-housing management system may have positive effects on ovarian function. kw|Keywords|k]reproduction; k]extended calving intervals; k]cattle; k]milking frequency  相似文献

In the dairy industry, the dry period has been identified as an area for potential reduction in antibiotic use, as part of a one health approach to preserve antibiotic medicines for human health. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of dry cow treatment on somatic cell count (SCC), intramammary infection (IMI) and milk yield on five commercial Irish dairy herds. A total of 842 cows across five spring calving dairy herds with a monthly bulk tank SCC of < 200 000 cells/mL were recruited for this study. At dry-off, cows which had not exceeded 200 000 cells/mL in the previous lactation were assigned one of two dry-off treatments: internal teat seal (ITS) alone (Lo_TS) or antibiotic plus ITS (Lo_AB + TS). Cows which exceeded 200 000 cells/mL in the previous lactation were treated with antibiotic plus ITS and included in the analysis as a separate group (Hi_AB + TS). Test-day SCC and lactation milk yield records were provided by the herd owners. Quarter milk samples were collected at dry-off, after calving and at mid-lactation for bacteriological culture and quarter SCC analysis. Cow level SCC was available for 789 cows and was log-transformed for the purpose of analysis. Overall, the log SCC of the cows in the Lo_TS group was significantly higher than the cows in Lo_AB + TS group and not statistically different to the cows in the Hi_AB + TS group in the subsequent lactation. However, the response to treatment differed according to the herd studied; the log SCC of the cows in the Lo_TS group in Herds 3, 4 and 5 was not statistically different to the cows in Lo_AB + TS group, whereas in the other two herds, the log SCC was significantly higher in the Lo_TS when compared to the Lo_AB + TS group. There was a significant interaction between dry-off group and herds on SCC and odds of infection in the subsequent lactation. The results of this study suggest that the herd prevalence of IMI may be useful in decision-making regarding the treatment of cows with ITS alone at dry-off to mitigate its impact on udder health.  相似文献

A clinical trial was performed to determine the effect of bST on reproductive performance in dairy cows on 4 Michigan dairy farms when bST was used according to labeled directions. Holstein cows (n = 555) at 4 Michigan dairy farms were randomly assigned to receive bovine somatotropin (bST) or to serve as untreated controls. Bovine somatotropin (500 mg, s.c.) was administered every 14 d beginning at 63 to 69 d of lactation and continuing until approximately 21 d prior to the end of lactation or until the producer removed the animal from the herd. A total of 229 (42.57%) animals consisting of 112 (48.91%) controls and 117 (51.09%) bST-treated cows were not diagnosed pregnant and were considered as having reproductive failure by 150 d of lactation and 92 (17.10%) of the animals consisting of 45 (48.91%) controls and 47 (51.09%) bST-treated cows had reproductive failure at the end of their lactation. No significant difference in the incidence of reproductive failure existed between the study treatment groups during either time frame. Cows with cystic ovarian disease had more instances of reproductive failure at 150 d of lactation than cows without this disease. Cows with dystocia, twin births, metritis, displaced abomasum and cystic ovarian disease had more instances of reproductive failure by the end of lactation than cows without these diseases. The bST-treated cows developed more nonspecific off feed conditions during the study lactation and had more twin births at the calving following bST administration compared to control cows. No differences were found between the study treatment groups in calculations of reproductive parameters. Logistic regression analysis found no significant effect of bST on reproductive failure; the odds ratios for the bST treatment effect on reproductive failure at 150 d of lactation and reproductive failure at the end of lactation were 0.95 (95% CI 0.67 to 1.36) and 0.95 (95% CI 0.59 to 1.54), respectively. Overall, bST was not found to have a significant impact on reproductive performance in the herds studied.  相似文献

Semiannual computer printouts of reproductive disorders diagnosed in high producing Israeli dairy herds were evaluated for a comparison of fertility indices of diseased and normal cows in low (LFH) and normal fertility herds (NFH). In 16,910 cows, conception rates to first AI in cows with reproductive disorder were >50% below those in normal cows (P<0.001). For both groups of cows, conception rates were lower in LFH (P<0.0001). A comparison of fertility indices between LFH (5, 171 cows) and NFH (14,573 cows) revealed, in addition a higher overall conception rate and a lower percentage of cows still open on Day 150 post partum (problem cows, (P<0.0001), as well as a higher pregnancy rate for NFH (P<0.001), for cows with reproductive disorder and for normal cows in these herds. In herds with predominantly uterine-related reproductive disorder, a high incidence of postpartum anestrus was seen infrequently; while in herds with a high incidence of postpartum anestrus, postbreeding anestrus was equally high (P<0.05 - 0.001). In general reproductive disorder have been shown to have long-term negative effects on fertility indices in both LFH and NFH, but with more serious consequences in LFH. Since a sizeable percentage of normal cows can be identified, reproducing normally under identical management conditions, cows in both kinds of herds with reproductive disorder must be less resistant to environmental stress. Thus, while cows with reproductive disorders maintained their general health and their high level of productivity, they responded either immediately with uterine disturbances or they refused to cycle properly, and they conceived later. A case can be made that all reproductive disorders represent disease entities influenced by management factors.  相似文献

Beef cows fed 0.37 Kg crude protein/day during the last four months of pregnancy had significantly shortened gestation (274 days vs. 282 days) and decreased weight gain (25 Kg vs. 66 Kg) compared to control cows fed 0.96 Kg crude protein/day. Calf mortality in the low protein group was associated with either dystocia (3 calves) or prematurity (2 calves). There were no deaths among control calves. It is suggested that protein malnutrition in late pregnancy may be a contributing factor to neonatal mortality among beef calves.  相似文献

It is well observed that feeding energy-dense diets in dairy cows during the dry period can cause metabolic imbalances after parturition. Especially dairy cows with high body condition score (BCS) and fed an energy-dense diet were prone to develop production diseases due to metabolic disturbances postpartum. An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of an energy-dense diet and nicotinic acid (NA) on production and metabolic variables of primiparous and multiparous cows in late pregnancy and early lactation which were not pre-selected for high BCS. Thirty-six multiparous and 20 primiparous German Holstein cows with equal body conditions were fed with energy-dense (60% concentrate/40% roughage mixture; HC group) or adequate (30% concentrate/70% roughage mixture; LC group) diets prepartum. After parturition, concentrate proportion was dropped to 30% for all HC and LC groups and was increased to 50% within 16 days for LC and within 24 days for HC cows. In addition, half of the cows per group received 24 g NA supplement per day and cow aimed to attenuate the lipid mobilisation postpartum. Feeding energy-dense diets to late-pregnant dairy cows elevated the dry matter (p < 0.001) and energy intake (p < 0.001) as well as the energy balance (p < 0.001) without affecting the BCS (p = 0.265) during this period. However, this did not result in any metabolic deviation postpartum as the effects of prepartum concentrate feeding were not carried over into postpartum period. Multiparous cows responded more profoundly to energy-dense feeding prepartum compared with primiparous cows, and parity-related differences in the transition from late pregnancy to lactation were obvious pre- and postpartum. The supplementation with 24 g NA did not reveal any effect on energy metabolism. This study clearly showed that energy-dense feeding prepartum did not result in metabolic imbalances postpartum in multiparous and primiparous cows not selected for high BCS. A genetic predisposition for an anabolic metabolic status as indicated by high BCS may be crucial for developing production diseases at the onset of lactation.  相似文献

In response to increasing efforts for reducing concentrate inputs to organic dairy production in grassland-rich areas of Europe, a long-term study was conducted, which assessed the impacts of concentrate reductions on cows’ performance, health, fertility and average herd age. In total, 42 Swiss commercial organic dairy cattle farms were monitored over 6 years (‘Y0’, 2008/09 until ‘Y5’, 2013/14). In comparison with overall data of Swiss herdbooks (including conventional and organic farms), the herds involved in the project had lower milk yields, similar milk solids, shorter calving intervals and higher average lactation numbers. During the first 3 project years farmers reduced the concentrate proportion (i.e. cereals, oilseeds and grain legumes) in the dairy cows’ diets to varying degrees. In Y0, farms fed between 0% and 6% (dietary dry matter proportion per year) of concentrates. During the course of the study they changed the quantity of concentrates to voluntarily chosen degrees. Retrospectively, farms were clustered into five farm groups: Group ‘0-conc’ (n=6 farms) already fed zero concentrates in Y0 and stayed at this level. Group ‘Dec-to0’ (n=11) reduced concentrates to 0 during the project period. Groups ‘Dec-strong’ (n=8) and ‘Dec-slight’ (n=12) decreased concentrate amounts by >50% and <50%, respectively. Group ‘Const-conc’ (n=5 farms) remained at the initial level of concentrates during the project. Milk recording data were summarised and analysed per farm and project year. Lactation number and calving intervals were obtained from the databases of the Swiss breeders’ associations. Dietary concentrate amounts and records of veterinary treatments were obtained from the obligatory farm documentations. Data were analysed with GLMs. Daily milk yields differed significantly between farm groups already in Y0, being lowest in groups 0-conc (16.0 kg) and Dec-to0 (16.7 kg), and highest in groups Dec-slight (19.6 kg) and Const-conc (19.2 kg). Milk yield decreases across the years within groups were not significant, but urea contents in milk decreased significantly during the course of the project. Milk protein, somatic cell score, fat–protein ratio, average lactation number, calving interval and frequency of veterinary treatments did not differ by group and year. In conclusion, 5 years of concentrate reduction in low-input Swiss organic dairy farms, affected neither milk composition, nor fertility and veterinary treatments. Milk yields tended to decline, but at a low rate per saved kilogram of concentrate.  相似文献

The objective of the experiment was to investigate the effect of clinoptilolite (a natural zeolite) supplementation in the ration of dairy cows on serum copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) concentrations. Fifty-two clinically healthy Holstein cows were randomly assigned to one of three groups according to their age and parity. The first group (group A) comprised 17 cows fed a ration supplemented with 1.25% clinoptilolite, the second group (group B) comprised also 17 cows was given a ration with 2.5% clinoptilolite, and the third group (group C, the control), comprised 18 cows fed the basal ration that did not contain any clinoptilolite. The experiment started when the cows entered the fourth week before the expected parturition and lasted until the end of lactation. All cows were fed the above concentrates during the entire experimental period. Blood sample were collected from each animal at the starting day of the experiment, at the day of calving, and at monthly intervals thereafter. All samples were tested for serum Cu, Zn, and Fe concentrations. The results showed that the 1.25 and 2.5% supplementation of clinoptilolite did not have any adverse effects on serum concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Fe.  相似文献

The transition period is the most critical period in the lactation cycle of dairy cows. Extended lactations reduce the frequency of transition periods, the number of calves and the related labour for farmers. This study aimed to assess the impact of 2 and 4 months extended lactations on milk yield and net partial cash flow (NPCF) at herd level, and on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per unit of fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM), using a stochastic simulation model. The model simulated individual lactations for 100 herds of 100 cows with a baseline lactation length (BL), and for 100 herds with lactations extended by 2 or 4 months for all cows (All+2 and All+4), or for heifers only (H+2 and H+4). Baseline lactation length herds produced 887 t (SD: 13) milk/year. The NPCF, based on revenues for milk, surplus calves and culled cows, and costs for feed, artificial insemination, calving management and rearing of youngstock, was k€174 (SD: 4)/BL herd per year. Extended lactations reduced milk yield of the herd by 4.1% for All+2, 6.9% for All+4, 1.1% for H+2 and 2.2% for H+4, and reduced the NPCF per herd per year by k€7 for All+2, k€12 for All+4, k€2 for H+2 and k€4 for H+4 compared with BL herds. Extended lactations increased GHG emissions in CO2-equivalents per t FPCM by 1.0% for All+2, by 1.7% for All+4, by 0.2% for H+2 and by 0.4% for H+4, but this could be compensated by an increase in lifespan of dairy cows. Subsequently, production level and lactation persistency were increased to assess the importance of these aspects for the impact of extended lactations. The increase in production level and lactation persistency increased milk production of BL herds by 30%. Moreover, reductions in milk yield for All+2 and All+4 compared with BL herds were only 0.7% and 1.1% per year, and milk yield in H+2 and H+4 herds was similar to BL herds. The resulting NPCF was equal to BL for All+2 and All+4 and increased by k€1 for H+2 and H+4 due to lower costs for insemination and calving management. Moreover, GHG emissions per t FPCM were equal to BL herds or reduced (0% to −0.3%) when lactations were extended. We concluded that, depending on lactation persistency, extending lactations of dairy cows can have a positive or negative impact on the NPCF and GHG emissions of milk production.  相似文献

Somatic cell counts of 2570 milk samples from 765 cows collected bimonthly from November 1975 to May 1976 were transformed to logarithmic values and analysed statistically. Components of variance were estimated as follows: Herds 0.033 (13 %), age groups 0.021 (8%), cows (within herds and age groups) 0.080 (31%), months 0.014 (6%), residual 0.107 (42%). Correction of actual cell counts for the influence of milk yield on the day of sampling led to only small changes in the magnitude of the various components. The coefficient of correlation between samples from the same cow was computed as 0.60 when the samples were from the same lactation, and 0.37 for samples from consecutive lactations. The proportionately small variation among herds as compared to the variation among cows of the same herd throws doubt on the efficiency of cell counting in samples of herd milk as a way of identifying cows with high cell counts.  相似文献

The concentration of urea in the milk of 510 dairy cows in 10 herds was determined at regular intervals for a year. The herds contained approximately equal numbers of Swedish Red and White, and Swedish Holstein cows. The mean ± sd concentration in the samples from individual cows was 5.32 ± 1.13 mmol/1, and the mean concentration in bulk milk was 5.39 ± 0.96 mmol/1. These values indicated that on average the herds were fed too much protein relative to their intake of energy throughout the year. Herd factors had a strong influence on the milk urea concentration. The concentration was lower during the first month of lactation than later in the lactation, and lower when the cows were housed during the winter than when they were grazing. There was a weak positive relationship between the daily milk yield and urea concentration, particularly during late lactation, but there was no relationship with either breed or age. Bulk milk urea was a reliable guide to the average urea concentration of a herd.  相似文献

Improving reproductive performance is one of the most important factors affecting the profitability of dairy herds. This study investigated the effect of feeding a high starch (HS) diet and body condition score (BCS) at calving on blood metabolites, fertility and ovarian function and milk production in Holstein dairy cows. One hundred seventy-four multiparous cows were fed common close-up and early lactation diets during the first 15 days in milk (DIM). Cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 experimental diets from 16 until 50 DIM (n = 87 per group); normal starch (228 g/kg diet DM; NS) or HS (270 g/kg diet DM; HS) diets. Each treatment group was further subdivided based on BCS at calving as normal BCS (BCS ⩽ 3.5; normal BCS (NBCS); n = 45) or high BCS (HBCS) (BCS ⩾ 3.75; HBCS; n = 42). A significant difference was detected for increased milk production (47.24 v. 44.55 kg/day) and decreased milk fat (33.93 v. 36.33 g/kg) in cows fed HS or NS, respectively. Plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were significantly higher in cows fed the HS compared to the NS diet. Diets significantly affected DIM at first artificial insemination (AI, 79.51 ± 3.83 v. 90.40 ± 3.83 days for cows fed HS and NS diets, respectively). High BCS groups had greater milk fat content and elevated plasma nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), β hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and bilirubin concentrations. In general, feeding higher starch diets to normal BCS cows during the first 50 DIM improved productive and reproductive performance of early-lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

This study was carried out in central Tanzania on a group of 45 Zebu and 37 crossbred cows which were 4 to 10 years old. At calving time, the animals were allocated to one of the 4 treatment groups. In addition to free access to grazing for all cows in the study, in group H: AR (n = 18), cows were fed a high level of concentrate supplementation (4kg/day) and calves were artificially reared; in group H:RS (n = 24), cows were fed a high level of concentrate supplementation (4kg/day) and calves were only allowed restricted suckling up until the weaning age of 6 months. In group L:AR (n = 23) cows were fed a low level of concentrate supplementation (2kg/day) and calves were artificially reared; and in group L:RS (n = 17) cows were fed a low level of concentrate supplementation (2kg/day) and calves were only allowed restricted suckling up until the weaning age of 6 months. Milk progesterone was used as a means of determining the postpartum resumption interval (PRI) and the interval from parturition to conception (PCI). The overall PRI was 47.4 ± 0.4 days and was significantly affected by breed but not by calving season, with crossbred cows exhibiting a shorter PRI than Zebu cows. The effect of the treatments was significant, with cows in the group H:AR displaying a significantly shorter PRI than those in the other groups, while cows in group L:RS showed a significantly longer PRI than those in the other groups. The overall PCI was 149.5 ±3.7 days, and was not significantly affected by breed or calving season. The effect of the treatments was significant, with cows in the group H:AR having a significantly shorter PCI than cows in the other groups, while cows in group L:RS showed a significantly longer PCI than those in the other groups. Crossbred cows had higher live weights at calving (299.4 kg) than Zebu cows (272.6 kg), while all cows gained weight during the first 3 months after calving. The treatments had a significant effect on weight gain, with cows in the group H:AR gaining significantly more weight than those in the other groups. Cows which had high live weights at calving exhibited significantly shorter PRI and PCI than the lighter cows. Animals which had gained more than 5 kg during the first month after calving, or which had gained more than 8 kg during the first 3 months after calving, showed significantly shorter PRI and PCI than cows which had gained less weight. The results show that the calf rearing system and the level of feed supplementation interact with each other and can influence the postpartum anoestrous period in Zebu and Zebu crossbred cattle. Increasing the level of nutrition in restricted suckling cows tended to improve the postpartum anoestrous period, but the positive effects of supplementation could not completely compensate for the negative effects of suckling.  相似文献
