Summary Mark and recapture studies were carried out for three and a half years on a population of Caiman c. crocodilus inhabiting a savanna lagoon system in the Venezuelan Guayana. Sub-adult and adult caimans migrated from permanent lagoon refuges to temporary lagoons during the wet season. A distinct homing response by artificially displaced caimans was observed.The wet season was the most significant time of the year for both feeding and growth. It was estimated that caimans take 6 years to reach a size of 97 cm. Thereafter the growth rate was variable. During a dry year there was little growth, but during a wet year a large caiman could increase in length by up to 10 cm.During the first 18 months of life, young caimans remained near the nest site. Older caimans dispersed and competed for territories which resulted in a high incidence of damage, particularly to the tails, as a result of intraspecific fighting.  相似文献

The Neotropical crocodylian species, Caiman crocodilus, is widely distributed through Mesoamerica, northern South America, and the Amazon basin. Four subspecies are recognized within C. crocodilus, suggesting some geographic variation in morphology. In this study, we utilized mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data from 45 individuals of C. crocodilus throughout its range to infer its evolutionary history and population structure, as well as to evaluate genealogical support for subspecies and their geographic distributions. Our molecular phylogenetic results identified five mtDNA haplotype clades with a mean sequence divergence of 3.4%, indicating considerable evolutionary independence among phylogeographic lineages. Our results were also broadly consistent with current subspecific taxonomy, with some important additional findings. First, we found substantial genetic structuring within C. c. fuscus from southern Mesoamerica. Second, though we confirmed the existence of a widespread Amazonian clade, we also discovered a cryptic and divergent mtDNA lineage that was indistinguishable from C. c. crocodilus based on external morphology. Third, we confirm the status of C. c. chiapasius as a distinct evolutionary lineage, and provide evidence that C. c. fuscus may be moving northward and hybridizing with C. c. chiapasius in northern Mesoamerica. Finally, our results parallel previous phylogeographic studies of other organisms that have demonstrated significant genetic structure over shorter geographic distances in Mesoamerica compared with Amazonia. We support conservation efforts for all five independent lineages within C. crocodilus, and highlight the subspecies C. c. chiapasius as a unit of particular conservation concern.  相似文献

Movements of the neck, jaws, and hyolingual apparatus during inertial feeding in Caiman crocodilus were studied by cineradiography. Analysis reveals two kinds of cycles: inertial bites (reposition, kill/crush, and transport) and swallowing cycles. They differ in their gape profile and in displacement of the neck, cranium, and hyolingual apparatus. Inertial bites are initiated by an elevation of the neck and cranium; the head is then retracted backward, the prey simultaneously being lifted by the hyolingual apparatus. Next the lower jaw is depressed, and the prey is rapidly pushed further upward by the hyolingual apparatus. Thereafter fast mouth-closure occurs with the neck and cranium being abruptly depressed, the lower jaw elevated, and the hyolingual apparatus rapidly retracted ventrally. Depression of the neck and cranium thrusts the head forward and impacts the backward moving prey more posteriorly in the oral cavity. Swallowing cycles initially involve movement of the hyoid in front of the prey followed by rapid posteroventrad retraction of the hyoid, forcing the prey into the esophagus during opening and closing of the mouth. After mouth-closure, the hyoid apparatus is again protracted. Jaws, neck, tongue, and hyoid apparatus play an active role during intertial feeding sequences. At the beginning of a feeding sequence, the hyolingual apparatus mainly moves dorsoventrally, whereas toward the end of a sequence anteroposterior displacements of the hyoid are prominent. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

From October 1986 to January 1987, feces from 119 Caiman yacare and 12 Caiman latirostris were collected in Paraguay and later examined for coccidian oocysts; 69 of 119 (58%) samples from C. yacare and 3 of 12 (25%) samples from C. latirostris contained coccidian oocysts. Two eimerians infected C. yacare and both are described as new species. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria paraguayensis n. sp. are ellipsoid, 34.0 x 23.6 (26-38 x 20-29) microns with sporocysts ovoid, 14.0 x 7.1 (10-19 x 6-10) microns. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria caimani n. sp. are spheroid, 22.4 (19-29) microns with sporocysts ovoidal, 12.9 x 6.5 (8-17 x 5-8) microns. Isospora jacarei infected C. latirostris and is redescribed. Sporulated oocysts of I. jacarei are sub-spheroid, 13.2 x 12.1 (10-18 x 10-15) microns with sporocysts ellipsoid, 10.4 x 5.8 (7-13 x 4-11) microns. To date, members of the Eimeriidae found in Crocodylia include 5 species of Eimeria and 2 of Isospora including the new species described here.  相似文献

Neighboring upland and nutrient‐poor seasonally flooded Amazon forests were penetrated by a fire in 2009, providing a natural comparative experiment of fire damage for these widespread forest types. In upland, only 16 ± 10% (±2 SEM) of stems and 21 ± 8% of basal area were lost to fire, while seasonally flooded forest lost 59 ± 13% of stems and 57 ± 13% of basal area. Drier understory contributes to greater flammability. Much of the area occupied by seasonally flooded woody vegetation (>11.5 percent of the Amazon region) is vulnerable to fire due to high flammability and slow recovery.  相似文献

Phenanthrene-degrading bacteria were isolated from a 1-m2 intertidal sediment site in Boston Harbor. Samples were taken six times over 2 years. A total of 432 bacteria were isolated and characterized by biochemical testing. When clustered on the basis of phenotypic characteristics, the isolates could be separated into 68 groups at a similarity level of approximately 70%. Several groups (a total of 200 isolates) corresponded to well-characterized species belonging the genera Vibrio and Pseudomonas. Only 51 of the 437 isolates (<11.7% of the total) hybridized to a DNA probe that encodes the upper pathway of naphthalene and phenanthrene degradation in Pseudomonas putida NCIB 9816. A cluster analysis indicated that the species composition of the phenanthrene-degrading community changed significantly from sampling date to sampling date. At one sampling time, 12 6-mm-diameter core subsamples were taken within the 1-m2 site to determine the spatial variability of the degrading communities. An analysis of molecular variance, performed with the phenotypic characteristics, indicated that only 6% of the variation occurred among the 12 subsamples, suggesting that the subsamples were almost identical in composition. We concluded that the communities of phenanthrene-degrading bacteria in the sediments are very diverse, that the community structure undergoes significant change with time but does not vary significantly on a spatial scale of centimeters, and that the predominant genes that encode phenanthrene degradation in the communities are not well-characterized.  相似文献

The sporogony of Hepatozoon caimani has been studied, by light microscopy, in the mosquito Culex fatigans fed on specimens of the caiman Caiman c. crocodilus showing gametocytes in their peripheral blood. Sporonts iniciate development in the space between the epithelium of the insect gut and the elastic membrane covering the haemocoele surface of the stomach. Sporulating oocysts are clustered on the gut, still invested by the gut surface membrane. Fully mature oocysts were first seen 21 days after the blood-meal. No sporogonic stages were found in some unidentified leeches fed on an infected caiman, up to 30 days following the blood-meal. When mosquitoes containing mature oocysts were fed to frogs (Leptodactylus fuscus and Rana catesbeiana), cysts containing cystozoites developed in the internal organs, principally the liver. Feeding these frogs to farm-bred caimans resulted in the appearance of gametocytes in their peripheral blood at some time between 59 and 79 days later, and the development of tissue cysts in the liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys. Transmission of the parasite was also obtained by feeding young caimans with infected mosquitoes and it is suggested that both methods occur in nature. The finding of similar cysts containing cystozoites in the semi-aquatic lizard Neusticurus bicarinatus, experimentally fed with infected C. fatigans, suggests that other secondary hosts may be involved.  相似文献

Striking variation in ant occupation of a facultative ant-plant, Conostegia setosa (Melastomataceae), was found at three scales: local spatial, geographic, and temporal. C. setosa provides housing for ants and grows in groups of stems (clones). The ant occupants of 14 C. setosa clones were censused four times over a 14-mo period at the La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica, and twice over a 9-mo period at the Nusagandi Station, Panama. Twelve facultative ant species occupied C. setosa stems at La Selva, compared to six facultative and one obligate species at Nusagandi. Occupancy (as % of stems ever occupied/clone) was higher at Nusagandi (median = 89%) compared to La Selva (65%). Occupancy varied among clones at La Selva but not at Nusagandi. C. setosa clones differed between sites, with larger clones and more small stems/clone at La Selva. Occupancy was influenced by clone structure; larger clones contained more ant species at both sites and had lower occupancy at La Selva. Occupancy was highest in larger stems and lowest in small stems at both sites. Temporally, percent occupation/clone did not differ among censuses at either site, but overall occupancy was lower in the dry season at La Selva. Turnover in ant occupants was higher at La Selva than at Nusagandi. The variation observed in this study is likely due to a number of factors, including differences between sites in plant population structure and history, differences between and within sites in ant faunas and their nesting requirements, and changes over space and time in microclimatic variables. Such high variation at multiple scales draws attention to the importance of long-term comparative studies of facultative animal-plant interactions.  相似文献

Background

Soil microbial communities are in constant change at many different temporal and spatial scales. However, the importance of these changes to the turnover of the soil microbial communities has been rarely studied simultaneously in space and time.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In this study, we explored the temporal and spatial responses of soil bacterial, archaeal and fungal β-diversities to abiotic parameters. Taking into account data from a 3-year sampling period, we analyzed the abundances and community structures of Archaea, Bacteria and Fungi along with key soil chemical parameters. We questioned how these abiotic variables influence the turnover of bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities and how they impact the long-term patterns of changes of the aforementioned soil communities. Interestingly, we found that the bacterial and fungal β-diversities are quite stable over time, whereas archaeal diversity showed significantly higher fluctuations. These fluctuations were reflected in temporal turnover caused by soil management through addition of N-fertilizers.

Conclusions

Our study showed that management practices applied to agricultural soils might not significantly affect the bacterial and fungal communities, but cause slow and long-term changes in the abundance and structure of the archaeal community. Moreover, the results suggest that, to different extents, abiotic and biotic factors determine the community assembly of archaeal, bacterial and fungal communities.  相似文献

The methylmercury (MeHg) content in the Second Songhua River was investigated in this study. Compared with the former data, the following trends in temporal variation were observed. The MeHg content decreased in relation to the distance from the pollution source in 1977; it showed a decline in 1983 after the pollution source had been shut off for one year and continued to decline from 1983 to 1991 when the Second Songhua River was in a cleansing period. The MeHg content in most segments investigated in this study was higher than in 1991. Along the river, sediment samples were collected from the Baishan Segment to the Sifangtai Segment, and from the surface to the underlying layer to check the vertical trend. The MeHg content was high in the segments upstream due to the gold mines existing, with highest content in the Toudaogou Segment (10.0 ng/g). The MeHg content declined from the Jiapigou Segment (6.2 ng/g) to the Hongshi Segment (0.69 ng/g), and it gradually increased from the Hongshi Segment (0.69 ng/g) to the Hadawan Segment (1.8 ng/g). It was still lower than upstream. The MeHg content gradually decreased from the Hadawan Segment to the Zhaoyuan Segment. However, there was no clear trend from the Zhaoyuan Segment to the Sifangtai Segment, where the order of the MeHg content was the Sanzhan Segment > the Sifangtai Segment > the Zhaoyuan Segment > the Laozhou Segment. The vertical variation in sediments showed that the MeHg content in the surface layer was higher than in the underlying layer in all segments with the exception of the Hongshi Segment and the Zhaoyuan Segment. The pollution index of MeHg content in the Second Songhua River was also discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The hypothesis that water depth, plant species, and the presence of submerged substrates influence seed dispersal by water was tested in a whitewater tributary of the Tocantins River of the Amazon Basin. Seed dispersal was greatest when water depth was greatest, which occurred during the new moon. Seeds of buoyant species with smaller seeds required less water for dispersal than large seeded species. Submerged objects reduced the distance dispersed but not the probability of dispersal.  相似文献

Summary The effect of temperature on the response properties of primary auditory fibres in caiman was studied. The head temperature was varied over the range of 10–35 ° C while the body was kept at a standard temperature of 27 °C (Ts). The temperature effects observed on auditory afferents were fully reversible. Below 11 °C the neural firing ceased.The mean spontaneous firing rate increased nearly linearly with temperature. The slopes in different fibres ranged from 0.2–3.5 imp s–1 °C–1. A bimodal distribution of mean spontaneous firing rate was found (<20 imp s–1 and >20 imp s–1 at Ts) at all temperatures.The frequency-intensity response area of the primary fibres shifted uniformly with temperature. The characteristic frequency (CF) increased nearly linearly with temperature. The slopes in different fibres ranged from 3–90 Hz °C–1. Expressed in octaves the CF-change varied in each fibre from about O.14oct °C–1 at 15 °C to about 0.06 oct °C–1 at 30 °C, irrespective of the fibre's CF at Ts. Thresholds were lowest near Ts. Below Ts the thresholds decreased on average by 2dB°C–1, above Ts the thresholds rose rapidly with temperature. The sharpness of tuning (Q10db) showed no major change in the temperature range tested.Comparison of these findings with those from other lower vertebrates and from mammals shows that only mammalian auditory afferents do not shift their CF with temperature, suggesting that a fundamental difference in mammalian and submammalian tuning mechanisms exists. A novel migratory polymorphism evolved within the last 60 years in blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla) breeding sympatrically in southwestern Germany. While most individuals winter in the traditional areas in the Mediterranean, a growing number of blackcaps started migrating to Britain instead. The rapid microevolution of this new strategy has been attributed to assortative mating and better physical condition of birds wintering in Britain. However, the isolating barriers as well as the physical condition of birds are not well known. In our study, we examined whether spatial isolation occurred among individuals with distinct migratory behaviour and birds with different arrival dates also differed in physical and genetic condition. We caught blackcaps in six consecutive years upon arrival on the breeding grounds and assigned them via stable isotope analysis to their wintering areas. Analysis of the vegetation structure within blackcap territories revealed different microhabitat preferences of birds migrating to distinct wintering areas. Blackcaps arriving early on the breeding grounds had higher survival rates, better body condition and higher multilocus heterozygosities than later arriving birds. We did however not find an effect of parasite infection status on arrival time. Our results suggest that early arriving birds have disproportionate effects on population dynamics. Allochrony and habitat isolation may thus act together to facilitate ongoing divergence in hybrid zones, and migratory divides in particular.  相似文献

Traditional dryland agriculture in the Pacific island was often labor-intensive and risky, yet settlement and farming in dry areas played an important role in the development of Polynesian societies. We investigate how temporal and spatial climatic fluctuations shape variation in agricultural production across dryland landscapes. We use a model that couples plant growth, climate, and soil organic matter dynamics, together with data from Kohala, Hawai'i, to understand how temperature, rainfall, nitrogen availability, and cropping activity interact to determine yield dynamics through time and space. Due to these interactions, the statistical characterization of rainfall alone is a poor characterization of agricultural yield. Using a simple linear model of human population dynamics, we show that the observed yield variation can affect long-term population growth substantially. Our approach to analyzing spatial and temporal fluctuations in food supply, and to interpreting the population consequences of these fluctuations, provides a quantitative evaluation of agricultural risk and human carrying capacity in dry regions.  相似文献

The axial musculature of the brown caiman was investigated in detail with particular attention to the nerve supply, using a binocular stereomicroscope. Due to the prominent development of the longissimus (Lo) and the iliocostalis (IC) muscles of the caiman, the pattern of distribution of the spinal nerves in the body wall was unique; there also was less differentiation of the external intercostalis. There were four primary divisions of the spinal nerves in the thoracic region of the caiman, from ventral to dorsal: the intercostal nerve, the IC nerve, the Lo nerve, and the dorsal main trunk. Thus, the classic concept of the organization of the spinal nerves may not be suitable for the caiman. These findings suggest that evolutionary changes in the dorsolateral axial musculature have brought about the rearrangement of the organization of the spinal nerves. In addition, each clearly segmented myotome of the Lo and IC was innervated by more than two segments of the spinal nerves (plurisegmental innervation). The manner of formation of the myotome and its innervation is discussed from the viewpoint of comparative and developmental anatomy.  相似文献

Tree island ecosystems are important and distinct features of Florida Everglades wetlands. We described the inter-relationships among abiotic factors describing seasonally flooded tree islands and characterized plant–soil relationships in tree islands occurring in a relatively unimpacted area of the Everglades. We used Principal Components Analysis (PCA) to reduce our multi-factor dataset, quantified forest structure and vegetation nutrient dynamics, and related these vegetation parameters to PCA summary variables using linear regression analyses. We found that, of the 21 abiotic parameters used to characterize the ecosystem structure of seasonally flooded tree islands, 13 parameters were significantly correlated with four principal components, and they described 78% of the variance among the study islands. Most variation was described by factors related to soil oxidation and hydrology, exemplifying the sensitivity of tree island structure to hydrologic conditions. PCA summary variables describing tree island structure were related to variability in Chrysobalanus icaco (L.) canopy cover, Ilex cassine (L.) and Salix caroliniana (Michx.) canopy cover, Myrica cerifera (L.) plot frequency, litter turnover, % phosphorus resorption of co-dominant species, and nitrogen nutrient-use efficiency. This study supported findings that vegetation characteristics can be sensitive indicators of variability in tree island ecosystem structure. This study produced valuable, information which was used to recommend ecological targets (i.e. restoration performance measures) for seasonally flooded tree islands in more impacted regions of the Everglades landscape.  相似文献
