In many ruminant species, males dramatically reduce forage intake during the rut. To date, different hypotheses have been suggested to explain this rut‐induced hypophagia. To assess the predictions of the main hypotheses, we analysed Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) activity budget and compared the behaviour of males and females before, during, and after the rut. Only males spent significantly less time foraging during the rut than outside of it, whereas females allocated a similar proportion of time to foraging before, during, and after the rut. Our results showed that during the rut males also reduced lying time, while the ratio of time spent feeding to time spent lying did not change for males among periods. In conclusion, during the breeding season males maximized energy intake when not actively engaged in mating activities and rut‐induced hypophagia appeared to result from time budget constraints generated by mating‐related activities. Accordingly, the foraging constraint hypothesis seems appropriate to explain this phenomenon in Alpine ibex males.  相似文献

Sexually mature male and female spiny damselfish, Acanthochromis polyacanthus (Pomacentridae) were introduced to resident fish of both sexes in paired encounter trials and the effect on activity, agonistic behaviour and plasma levels of testosterone (T) and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) in males, and T and 17β-estradiol (E2) in females, and cortisol in both sexes was determined. Introduced males showed suppressed levels of T in the presence of both resident males and females, whereas resident males showed elevated T in response to introduced males but not females. Plasma 11-KT levels were unchanged in either resident or introduced males. Resident males showed increased activity in the presence of males but not females. Resident females showed an increase in activity when paired with introduced females and greater aggressive behaviour towards females than males. There were no differences in plasma hormone levels in either resident or introduced female fish. Plasma cortisol levels were low in all fish and stress effects did not appear to account for differences in T levels in males. The results of the present study show that elevations in plasma T levels in resident male spiny damselfish are associated only with male presence but that suppression of T in introduced fish occurs irrespective of the sex of the resident. In contrast resident females, which show stronger evidence of aggressive behaviour do not show changes in plasma androgen levels. This suggests that aggressive behaviour in male and female fishes may be mediated by different endocrine pathways.  相似文献

Asiatic ibex (Capra sibirica) is a threatened species in China and is distributed in the mountains of Central Asia. It is a sexually dimorphic ungulate. The males are much larger than females, and except for the breeding season, both sexes live in separate groups. Many hypotheses have been developed to explain the sexual segregation in sexually dimorphic ungulates. These hypotheses are not mutually exclusive, and in recent years, the activity budget hypothesis has received special attention. To test this hypothesis, we studied the activity budget of Asiatic ibex in the autumn of 2005. According to the activity budget hypothesis, females should spend more time feeding than the males, and the degree of activity synchronization should be higher in same-sex groups than in mixed-sex groups. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis. Both sexes of the Asiatic ibex spent most of the time feeding, and females spent a significantly longer time feeding than males, and males spent a significantly longer time standing. Activity synchronization indexes of both the female groups and males groups were significantly higher than mixed-sex groups. These results indicated that in Asiatic ibex, the activity budget hypothesis about sexual segregation is supported.  相似文献

Males of the beetle Tenebrio molitor produce a volatile sex pheromone which attracts females of the same species. The pheromone level peaks 8 days after emergence and then reaches a plateau. Elimination of endocrine centers by decapitating male adults 24 hr following adult ecdysis did not impair pheromone production. Treatment of decapitated males with juvenile hormone analogues did not make any detectable difference in the levels of pheromone activity. However, undecapitated males treated with juvenile hormone analogue showed a significant increase in pheromone activity when compared with those that had been decapitated and subsequently treated with juvenile hormone analogue. This observation is discussed in the light of published research on the effect of juvenile hormone on pheromone activity of females of T. molitor.  相似文献

We examined the cortisol responses to chemical and physical restraint stress in southern elephant seal Mirounga leonina females and their pups at three stages during lactation. In anaesthetised females the serum cortisol levels changed moderately during the 45-min sampling period following restraint, with average peaks at 23 min after anaesthetic administration. Overall, cortisol was relatively low 2 days postpartum and increased throughout lactation. In physically restrained pups serum cortisol increased rapidly after capture; the response was milder at age 2 days than at 11 days and 21 days. Levels were higher in female pups than in males. In order to test whether cortisol levels and/or responses became chronically (i.e. days to weeks) altered due to restraint, we compared the cortisol response at a late stage of lactation between three groups of mother-pup pairs previously given different levels of chemical (mothers) or physical (pups) restraint stress: control (not handled previously), moderate treatment (previously handled twice), and high treatment (previously handled 3-4 times). Pups of the three treatment groups showed similar adrenocortical responses suggesting no chronic effect of repeated physical restraint, despite the clear acute effects. Mothers of the control and moderate treatment groups showed similar cortisol responses; however, mothers of the high treatment group showed significantly attenuated responses. This indicated that elephant seals tolerated moderate degrees of handling disturbance; however, repeated (3-4) chemical immobilisations in lactating females may reduce their adrenocortical responsiveness for a period of days or weeks.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to assess the usefulness of drive nets to capture roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), Southern chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica) and Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica), comparing the results obtained with other capture methods and amongst the three species. Sixty-five drive net capture operations using beaters were conducted from January 1998 to September 2004. A total of 161 wild ungulates (31 roe deer, 95 Southern chamois and 35 Spanish ibexes) were captured. The average number of animals captured per operation was 1.07 for roe deer, 3.96 for Southern chamois and 2.92 for Spanish ibex. The average number of person–days per captured animal was 21.5, 7.1 and 10.6 for roe deer, Southern chamois and Spanish ibex, respectively. Specificity was 100% for Southern chamois and Spanish ibex (only the target species captured) and 77.5% for roe deer. Risk for the animals (mortality plus injuries) was 3.23% for roe deer, 5.27% for Southern chamois and 0% for Spanish ibex, whereas injuries to the operators occurred with 3.1% of the handled animals. Sex ratio was skewed towards females in roe deer, towards males in Southern chamois and balanced in Southern chamois. Drive nets showed good performance, although many operators were required. Safety for the animals and specificity were higher than traditionally attributed to this capture method. It is concluded that drive nets are an efficient and safe method to capture many ungulate species.  相似文献

The sense of smell plays an important role in guiding the behaviour of many animals including insects. The attractiveness of a volatile is not only dependent on the nature of the chemical, but might change with the physiological status (e.g., age/hormone or mating status) or environmental conditions (e.g., photoperiod or temperature) of the individual. Here we summarize our studies focused on the plasticity of olfactory-guided behaviour and its neurobiological basis linked with the physiological status in Lepidoptera and migratory locusts. In moths and locusts, age and juvenile hormone changed the behavioural responses to pheromones. In moths, mating had an effect on pheromone responses in males and plant odour responses in females. In all cases of behavioural plasticity studied, we found changes in the sensitivity of olfactory interneurons in the antennal lobe, whereas the peripheral system does not seem to show any plasticity in that context. Changes in the central nervous system were slow under the influence of juvenile hormone (days) or fast after mating (minutes). The olfactory system seems thus to adapt to the physiological or environmental situation of an animal to avoid a waste of energy. We discuss possible mechanisms underlying the observed plasticity.  相似文献

This experiment was designed to study the long-term behavioural effects of gonadal hormone injections into domestic ducklings. Ten male and four female ducklings were injected daily from their 4th day onwards: the males with testosterone propionate and the females with oestradiol benzoate. Five males were injected for 40 days, the other ducklings (5♀ + 4♂) for 80 days. Behavioural effects of these treatments were assessed when the birds were six months old. Social displays were strongly inhibited in the injected males as compared with control birds but no general significant effect was observed for the aggressive and sexual behaviour. The inhibition of social displays is consistent with the view that these behaviour patterns are regulated by the pituitary-gonadal axis and the different levels at which the functional inhibition could have occured are discussed. Far fewer social displays were performed by the males presented with injected females which, on the other hand, showed less sexual behaviour than the control females. This supports the idea that the female plays an important part in the social display of ducks.  相似文献

In photoperiodic birds, endocrine responses to behavioural interactions between males and females may be involved in temporally "fine-tuning" the onset of reproduction to yearly variations in the environment. This study examined the endocrine and behavioural responses of male White-crowned sparrows ( Zonotrichia leucophrys ) to changes in the endocrine state of the female, as signalled by changes in her behaviour. Males on different photoperiodic regimes were paired with oestrogen-treated, sexually receptive females. Males exposed to gonadostimulatory long days mounted and copulated with oestrogen-treated females even before gonadal development was complete. These males had higher plasma levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone and maintained enlarged testes longer than control males paired with untreated, nonreceptive females. Males maintained on nonstimulatory short days also mounted oestrogen-treated females; however, testes of these males remained nonfunctional and their plasma levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone were basal. Thus, reproductive function of photostimulated males is profoundly affected by changes in the endocrine state and behaviour of the female. However, male sexual behaviours are expressed in response to visual and auditory stimuli from the female regardless of male hormonal condition or photoperiodic treatment.  相似文献

Abstract. To test the prediction that female and male tsetse should differ in their behaviour and the partitioning of their energy budgets to maximize their respective reproductive outputs, we investigated experimentally the relationship between blood intake, fat content and flight activity in virgin and mated female flies, following the same procedure as in a previous study on males. Those flies whose fat content was raised to higher levels by being fed more frequently performed more flight activity, but all females showed very little activity until day 4 after their last blood meal, thereby using only a small fraction of their fat reserves. This contrasted markedly with the large amount of flight performed by males on day 3, resulting in the depletion of their fat reserves. The difference is interpreted with respect to females flying only to find food approximately once every 3 days (and larviposition sites approximately once every 9 days), compared with males flying to find as many mates as possible during the earlier part of the feeding cycle when their energy reserves are high and feeding is a low priority.  相似文献

The effects of repeated administration of porcine follicular fluid (PFF) on the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels after castration were studied in rabbits. Steroid-free dextran-charcoal extracted PFF was administered to male and female adult rabbits at 0800 and 1600 h for four days immediately following castration. Serum levels of FSH and LH were measured before, during and after the PFF administration and compared to controls. A significant increase in FSH and LH was observed within 24 h following castration in the controls. In the PFF-treated group, a clear suppression of serum FSH levels was observed during PFF administration in both males and females. FSH concentrations returned to the control levels within 24 h after PFF withdrawal. Even through LH levels showed no differences during PFF injection, compared to controls, a significant increase was observed following discontinuation of PFF administration.  相似文献

Courtship can be costly and so selection should favour individual males that reduce courtship towards female types that have a low probability of resulting in copulation. One way males can do this is by associating previous courtship failure with the traits of particular rejecting females. We characterised changes in male Drosophila melanogaster courtship behaviour following a failed mating attempt with one of the four female phenotypes that varied in size, age or mating status. To do this, we assessed individual courtship behaviour for each male presented again with a female of the same phenotype that previously rejected him. Males reduced subsequent courtship most strongly for recently mated (sexually non‐receptive) females. More interestingly, males also significantly reduced courtship activity following a failed mating experience from old females but did not do so for control (large, young, virgin) or small females. As such, males significantly reduced courtship towards both female types possessing chemical cues associated with their phenotype (age and mating status), but not towards a female phenotype based on physical characteristics (body size). Our results suggest that males are able to modify their courtship behaviour following experience, but that they are better prepared to associate chemical traits that may be more reliable indicators of the likelihood of courtship failure.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in ovulatory activity, assessed by the measurement of plasma progesterone and plasma prolactin concentrations were monitored in 10 Spanish ibex females captured in the National Wildlife Reserve of Sierra Nevada (South Spain, 37 degrees N). Five of the 10 female ibex showed ovulatory activity with a mean (+/- s.e.m.) duration of the oestrous cycle of 19.4 +/- 1 days (range: 17-23 days). On average, the five cyclic females weighed 28 +/- 0.9 kg. Progesterone cycles occurred only in animals older than 4 years of age. Ovulatory activity extended from December to January. The duration of the breeding season was 43.2 +/- 7.7 days. Ibex females younger than 4 years of age had a body weight lower (P < 0.01 ) than that of adults and none of them displayed ovulations. Plasma concentrations of prolactin levels were significantly affected by season (P < 0.05), following a trend that was roughly parallel to daylength. The highest values occurred in the spring (119.7 +/- 21.4 ng x mL(-1)) and the summer (139.3 +/- 19.8 ng x mL(-1)), the lowest values in the autumn (26 +/- 7.4 ng x mL(-1)) and in the winter (19.7 +/- 3.2 ng x mL(-1)). Our results showed a very restricted breeding season, despite the fact that the Spanish ibex originates from and lives in a temperate latitude, revealing a remarkably good adaptation to the harsh climatic and nutritional conditions of their mountainous habitat.  相似文献

To better understand how genes and hormones interact to affect behaviour in nature, I used a factorial design to test for effects of family membership, sex and testosterone level on activity and defensive behaviour of the common garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis. Behaviours (latency to move, defensive strikes, response distance) were scored prior to hormone manipulation (when snakes were 39 days of age), while sham or testosterone-containing implants were in place (190 days), following implant removal and simulated hibernation (284 days), and when snakes were 428 days of age. Family membership had pervasive effects on all three behaviours and on their ontogenetic trajectories, suggesting strong genetic or maternal components to behavioural variation. Sex had a significant effect on the number of defensive strikes; females struck more frequently than males, but ontogenetic trajectories were similar between the sexes. Testosterone manipulation also had an effect on strikes: snakes in the elevated-testosterone treatment group struck less frequently than shams while implants were in place. Sex and treatment effects on latency to move and response distance were lacking. Family*treatment interaction effects were lacking for latency to move and number of defensive strikes but were present for response distance. Possibly, genetic or maternally induced variation in strikes is mediated through variation in circulating hormone levels, whereas variation in response distance is mediated through receptor-level phenomena. Chemical signals are essential for intersexual communication in many animals, including lizards. While faeces have been suggested to contain socially relevant chemical stimuli, epidermal gland secretions are generally believed to be the leading source of chemosignals involved in lizard communication. Early research has shown that sex hormones affect epidermal gland activity, with androgens stimulating gland/pore size and/or gland productivity. However, the functional significance of hormone‐induced glandular activity in lizard chemical communication remains unclear. In this study, we manipulated testosterone (T) concentrations in male Podarcis muralis lizards. While T‐supplementation did not change pore size, it did increase secretion production substantially. Chemosensory tests showed that female conspecifics tongue‐flick at a higher rate and more quickly towards the secretion of males with experimentally increased T levels than towards the secretion of control males, suggesting that females can discriminate between males with dissimilar T levels based on chemical cues of secretion alone. Based on the scent of faeces, however, females were unable to discriminate between males with differential T levels. Also, females reacted more quickly when offered larger amounts of secretion – irrespective of whether secretions were obtained from control or T‐increased males. This result indicates that secretion quantity affects chemosignal detectability in Podarcis muralis.  相似文献

Manipulation of the opportunity to spawn was used to investigate the relationship between endocrine events, egg viability and spawning behaviour in female rainbow trout. Females were prevented from spawning by isolating them from males and gravel for up to 21 days after ovula- tion. Blood samples were taken before pairing with a male, at the onset of nesting activity, and at the completion of spawning. Plasma hormone levels of gonadotropin (GtH) and 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,2OP) were measured by specific radioimmunoassays. There were no qualitative or quantitative differences in the spawning behaviour of females paired on the day of ovulation or 7. 14, or 21 days after ovulation. There was a general decrease in the viability of eggs with increasing retention times. In females paired on the day of ovulation, or after 7 or 14 days, GtH levels increased with the onset of nesting behaviour and declined as fish reached the post-spawning condition. By day 21, GtH levels before pairing were significantly higher than prepairing levels in the other three treatment groups, and did not increase at the onset of nesting, or decrease in post-spawning fish. Plasma 17,20P remained high in prepairing and nesting samples of all four groups and declined to low levels in fish in post-spawning condition. In females paired on the day of ovulation there was a significant increase in 17,20P from the prepairing to the nesting stage. These results suggest that 17,20P plays a key role in the synchronization of behavioural and maturational events at the time of spawning.  相似文献

In many bird species, the female participates in defending a pair's breeding territory, however, the endocrine control mechanism of female aggressive behavior is largely unknown. The general statement that androgens are involved in the regulation of aggressive behavior is based on studies conducted only in males. Here, we tested whether paired female stonechats show a hormonal response to a simulated male territorial intruder. Since in males of territorial bird species androgen levels usually increase following a male-male encounter, we measured androgen-levels before and after a simulated male intrusion. In addition, we measured estradiol, the main gonadal hormone in females, and corticosterone, a stress hormone. The results show that a male intruder does not affect any of the measured hormones in females. In a second experiment, we also tested whether the endocrine state of the male partner affects the hormonal response of females to a male intruder by comparing the hormonal response of females paired with pharmacologically castrated males and females paired with control males. Females paired with pharmacologically castrated males had lower corticosterone levels both before and after the intrusion than females paired with control males. Additionally, in both groups, female corticosterone levels were increased following a male intrusion. We suggest that the differences found between females paired with pharmacologically castrated males and females paired with control males are due to differences in intra-pair interactions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Topical application of the juvenile hormone mimic, Altosid, to Hippodamia convergens (Guérin-Méneville) (Coccinellidae) stimulated a significant increase in long-term flight behaviour in both males and females. Altosid treatment also stimulated ovarian development in females. Topical application of precocene II to H.convergens inhibited flight activity in treated animals of both sexes for about 10 days. Altosid treatment to precocene-treated beetles significantly increased their migratory behaviour over that of precocene-treated or acetone-treated controls. These results indicate that juvenile hormone stimulates migratory flight behaviour in this species along with reproductive development. It is likely that the hormone serves to coordinate migration with reproduction in the young adult.  相似文献

Previous research has shown that exposure to testicular hormones during the peri-pubertal period of life has long-term, organizational effects on adult sexual behaviour and underlying neural mechanisms in laboratory rodents. However, the organizational effects of peri-pubertal testicular hormones on other aspects of behaviour and brain function are less well understood. Here, we investigated the effects of manipulating peri-pubertal testicular hormone exposure on later behavioural responses to novel environments and on hormone receptors in various brain regions that are involved in response to novelty. Male rodents generally spend less time in the exposed areas of novel environments than females, and this sex difference emerges during the peri-pubertal period. Male Lister-hooded rats (Rattus norvegicus) were castrated either before puberty or after puberty, then tested in three novel environments (elevated plus-maze, light–dark box, open field) and in an object/social novelty task in adulthood. Androgen receptor (AR), oestrogen receptor (ER1) and corticotropin-releasing factor receptor (CRF-R2) mRNA expression were quantified in the hypothalamus, hippocampus and medial amygdala. The results showed that pre-pubertally castrated males spent more time in the exposed areas of the elevated-plus maze and light–dark box than post-pubertally castrated males, and also confirmed that peri-pubertal hormone exposure influences later response to an opposite-sex conspecific. Hormone receptor gene expression levels did not differ between pre-pubertally and post-pubertally castrated males in any of the brain regions examined. This study therefore demonstrates that testicular hormone exposure during the peri-pubertal period masculinizes later response to novel environments, although the neural mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated.  相似文献

The results we have got on the mouse-killing behaviour of the rat point out the remarkable percentage difference between control males and control females, between integral males and males castrated at birth, and between normal females and females under the effects of androgens. Such results make us believe that the appearance of the killer behaviour is affected by the presence of testosterone in the first days of life of the rat.  相似文献
