Immunogens were found associated with particular fractions prepared from spherules ofCoccidioides immitis (Kong, Levine &Smith, 1963) and from yeast cells ofHistoplasma capsulatum (Salvin &Ribi, 1955). However,Blastomyces dermatitidis, another dimorphic systemic fungal pathogen was shown to elicit a minimal immunogenic response in experimental animals (Kong &Levine, 1967). Summary Two aerobic mesophilic species of a new genus belonging to the familyActinoplanaceae are described under the nameDactylosporangium (D. aurantiacum strainD/748 type species andD. thailandensis strainD/449). The new genus is characterized by the production of finger shaped sporangia emerging directly from the vegetative mycelium.The motile sporangiospores, three to four in number are arranged in a single straight row inside the sporangium.The genusActinoplanes of the familyActinoplanaceae was described in 1950 byCouch and is characterized by the bacteria-like, flagellated spores formed in sporangia. Other members of the familyActinoplanaceae have been studied byKarling (1954),Rothwell (1957) andCross et al. (1963) in the United States, byGaertner (1955) in Germany, byVan Brummelen andWent (1957) in Holland, byNonomura andOhara (1960) in Japan, byTaig et al. (1962),Tsyganov et al. (1963), andKoniev et al. (1965) in Russia. Except for the organisms studied byKarling and byRothwell, which undoubtedly belonged to theActinoplanes but were not studied in pure culture, the organisms studied by most of the other authors belonged to the genusStreptosporangium.Three new genera having motile spores were described more recently:Ampullariella andSpirillospora described byCouch (1963, 1964), andPlanomonospora byThiemann et al. Population changes of Heterodera avenae and crop growth in a sandy loam soil were studied from 1974 until 1978; the nematode decreased plant growth but failed in two of the years to multiply on susceptible hosts. Spring oats were the most heavily invaded cereal and produced the smallest shoots. Second-stage juveniles invaded cereal roots in decreasing numbers: spring oats > autumn oats > spring barley > spring wheat > autumn barley > autumn wheat. Numbers of females developing on the different cultivars were in a similar order. Most females developed on roots in 1976 despite poor crop growth in the severe drought. Numbers of H. avenae in soil treated with oxamyl (Vydate) at 8.8 kg/ha a. i. were less in all years except 1975. In the dry winter and spring of 1975/76 nematode multiplication was prevented in soil treated with oxamyl before drilling in the autumn. In all years large numbers of females were produced on the roots of all cultivars but in 1975 and 1978 nematode populations declined because few females survived to form cysts containing eggs and their fecundity was reduced. Numbers of cysts after harvest were not affected by formalin (38% formaldehyde) applied as a drench at 3000 litres/ha in 1977 but fecundity doubled in treated soil, and nematode multiplication increased from 3.8 × in untreated plots to 18.6 ×. When the plots were irrigated in 1978 numbers of cysts and fecundity increased in formalin treated soil resulting in an increase in multiplication from 0.3 × to 14.6 ×. Fungal parasites attacking H. avenae females and eggs are considered responsible for the poor multiplication of the nematode.  相似文献

The Monocotylidae Taschenberg, 1879 is revised based on a cladistic analysis of relationships between the constituent species and genera. The monophyly of the family is supported by three apomorphic character states: division of the haptor into one central and eight peripheral loculi; the ovary looping the right intestinal caecum; and tetrahedral eggs. The family is divided into six subfamilies: Calicotylinae Monticelli, 1903 (comprising Calicotyle Diesing, 1850, Dictyocotyle Nybelin, 1941); Dasybatotreminae Bychowsky, 1957 (comprising Anoplocotyloides Young, 1967, Dasybatotrema Price, 1938, Timofeevia n. g., Troglocephalus Young, 1967); Decacotylinae n. subfam. (comprising Decacotyle Young, 1967, Papillicotyle Young, 1967); Heterocotylinae n. subfam. (comprising Heterocotyle Scott, 1904, Neoheterocotyle Hargis, 1955, Nonacotyle Ogawa, 1991, Potamotrygonocotyle Mayes, Brooks & Thorson, 1981, Spinuris Doran, 1953); Merizocotylinae Johnston & Tiegs, 1922 (comprising Cathariotrema Johnston & Tiegs, 1922, Empruthotrema Johnston & Tiegs, 1922, Merizocotyle Cerfontaine, 1894, Squalotrema Kearn & Green, 1983, Triloculotrema Kearn, 1993); and Monocotylinae Taschenberg, 1879 (comprising Clemacotyle Young, 1967, Dendromonocotyle Hargis, 1955, Monocotyle Taschenberg, 1878). The Dendromonocotylinae Hargis, 1955 is removed from subfamilial status and the two genera previously assigned to the subfamily are reassigned to the Monocotylinae. Timofeevia is proposed for Timofeevia rajae (Timofeeva, 1983) n. comb. (formerly Dasybatotrema rajae). Mycteronastes Kearn & Beverley-Burton, 1990 and Thaumatocotyle Scott, 1904 are synonymised with Merizocotyle. Gymnocalicotyle Nybelin, 1941 is not considered a distinct taxon. Revised diagnoses and keys for subfamilies and genera of the Monocotylidae are provided.  相似文献

The longevity of Sitobion avenae varied inversely with temperature from 25 to over 100 days when reared outdoors on barley under lantern jars, being longest between December and April–May. This was due mainly to changes in the length of the pre- and post-reproductive periods rather than the length of the period of reproduction. Fecundity varied directly with temperature, from eight to sixty-seven nymphs per female. When reared on winter wheat and sheltered from wind, rain and snow, S. avenae survived best, Metopolophium dirhodum survived less well and Rhopalosiphum padi worst; when exposed in the open none of the three species survived. Close relationships were not demonstrable between the numbers of alate M. dirhodum, S. avenae and Rhopalosiphum spp. trapped in any year, between the abundance of these aphids and weather conditions between January and April, or between the numbers of these alatae and the size of crop infestations. This was probably because insufficient information was available about their biology, both inside and outside the crop.  相似文献

Changes in the number and characteristics of patients in Canadian mental hospitals during 1955-1963 were studied in order to assess the future need for long-term hospital care.Despite marked increases in the number of first admissions and readmissions, the average number of patients in hospital decreased 6% from 49,537 in 1955 to 46,498 in 1963.Patients who were “long stay” in 1955 continued to leave hospital at the same rate during the years 1960-1963 as during 1955-1959. No “hard core” of long-stay patients with reduced potential for discharge seemed to have formed by 1963.Since 1955 the number of “admissions” remaining continuously hospitalized has progressively decreased for the elderly and for patients with psychoses. No build-up of new long-stay patients from patients with repeated short admissions was evident.The estimate of the Royal Commission on Health Services that the ratio of patients in mental hospitals could be reduced from 3.0 per 1000 in 1961 to 1.5 per 1000 by 1971 seems feasible.  相似文献

In Mediterranean regions drought is the major factor limiting spring barley and durum wheat grain yields. This study aimed to compare spring barley and durum wheat root and shoot responses to drought and quantify relationships between root traits and water uptake under terminal drought.One spring barley(Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Rum) and two durum wheat Mediterranean cultivars(Triticum turgidum L. var durum cvs Hourani and Karim) were examined in soil‐column experiments under well watered and drought conditions. Root system architecture traits, water uptake, and plant growth were measured. Barley aerial biomass and grain yields were higher than for durum wheat cultivars in well watered conditions. Drought decreased grain yield more for barley(47%) than durum wheat(30%, Hourani). Root‐to‐shoot dry matter ratio increased for durum wheat under drought but not for barley, and root weight increased for wheat in response todrought but decreased for barley. The critical root length density(RLD) and root volume density(RVD) for 90% available water capture for wheat were similar to(cv. Hourani) or lower than(cv. Karim) for barley depending on wheat cultivar. For both species, RVD accounted for a slightly higher proportion of phenotypic variation in water uptake under drought than RLD.  相似文献

The effects of the cereal cyst-nematode, Heterodera auenae Woll. on resistant and susceptible oat cultivars, with and without aldicarb treatment, were compared on a clay-with-flints soil at Rothamsted and a loamy sand at Woburn. At both sites, when H. auenae was extremely scarce, yields were not further enhanced by aldicarb. At Rothamsted aldicarb increased yields by 48–72% when H. auenae averaged 10 eggs/g soil. At Woburn, aldicarb increased yields of both susceptible and resistant varieties by 80–90% with 20 eggs/g. The resistant varieties conferred yield benefits in the following oat crop equal to the residual effects of aldicarb applied before the previous crop, demonstrating that H. auenae was wholly responsible for the yield losses. Nematode resistant oats suffered as much or more damage from root invasion by H. auenae juveniles as the susceptible varieties but the resulting decrease in nematode numbers led to considerable yield improvements in the following year. At Woburn in 1977, when formalin was an added treatment, fewer females were infected by parasitic fungi and post-crop egg numbers were greater.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine if coccinellids adjusted their distribution within spring wheat fields in response to spatial variation cereal aphid density in the fields and to describe the patterns of cereal aphid population growth that resulted. Field experiments were completed in which the physical dimensions of patches infested with cereal aphids, cereal aphid density, and access to patches by coccinellids were varied. Aphid infestations consisted of naturally occurring densities (natural patches) and much greater densities created by supplementing patches with aphids (supplemented patches). Coccinellids were denied access to some supplemented patches (exclusion patches) but allowed unlimited access to others. Densities of adult Hippodamia convergens and Coccinella septempunctata were correlated with aphid density in patches whereas density of Coleomegilla maculata was not. Aggregation by coccinellids was independent of patch area. The realized aphid population growth rate (r) was lower in supplemented than natural patches in all four trials but was significantly lower in only one trial. The lower r in supplemented patches was not exclusively caused by coccinellid predation, and emigration of aphids from patches probably also contributed. r was significantly greater in exclusion patches than supplemented and natural patches, indicating that coccinellids markedly reduced aphid numbers in patches even when aphid density was extremely high. The ability of Sphaerotheca mors-uvae to perennate as cleistocarps, and as mycelium in buds was examined during the winters of 1965-6, 1966-7 and 1967-8 in relation to its two principal hosts, gooseberry and black currant. Cleistocarps on black currant leaves were examined from August 1965 to April 1966 and from July 1966 to March 1967. In 1965 cleistocarps were first observed on the leaves on 5 August; in 1966 on 11 July. These continued to develop through August and September and by October approximately 70% contained well-defined ascospores. The ascospore content remained generally at this level until February 1966 and November 1966; then the numbers of cleistocarps with ascospores fell and by April 1966 and March 1967 few such cleistocarps remained. From 21 March 1966 and 15 February 1967, but not otherwise, discharge of ascospores from the overwintered cleistocarps was readily obtained in laboratory tests. The viability and infectivity of the ascospores was demonstrated by allowing them to discharge on to leaf discs of black currant in the laboratory and also on to leaf discs and plants in the field. Sporulating colonies of S. mors-uvae developed within 8 days. Cleistocarps from shoots of black currant were examined from 4 August 1966 to 9 March 1967, and from 27 July 1967 to 1 January 1968. They developed in a similar manner to those on black currant leaves and by September in both 1966 and 1967 over 60% contained ascospores. This level was not maintained; the number of cleistocarps with ascospores fell gradually and by 8 December 1966 and 1 January 1968 few remained. Only in one laboratory test (21 November 1967) were ascospores discharged from a sample of these cleistocarps. Cleistocarps from shoots of gooseberry were examined from July 1966 to March 1967, and from August 1967 to January 1968. The pattern of ascospore development and subsequent decline in number of cleistocarps with ascospores was similar to that observed for black currant shoots. No discharge of ascospores could be demonstrated in laboratory tests. Evidence that S. mors-uvae perennates in buds of gooseberry was obtained by dissecting buds and by inducing buds on surface-sterilized shoots to burst under conditions which precluded chance infection. Field observations also suggested that bud infection occurred on gooseberry. Similar experiments failed to demonstrate the fungus in buds of black currant, and there was no indication of bud infection of this host in the field.  相似文献

During the mid-1980s, Sitobion avenae became recognised as an important vector of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) in the Vale of York. A field trial at the University of Leeds Farm, North Yorkshire, was carried out during the autumn/winter of 1984-85 to evaluate different control procedures against S. avenae-transmitted BYDV and to investigate its epidemiology. Winter barley was sown on three dates in September, and plots were sprayed with either deltamethrin, demeton-S-methyl or pirimicarb on one of three dates between mid-October and mid-November, making a factorial design. Rhopalosiphum padi, the main vector of BYDV in southern England, were rarely found during the experiment, but the numbers of S. avenae were much higher, reaching a peak of 21% of plants infested in the unsprayed plots of the first sowing date. Single applications of each insecticide reduced populations of S. avenae to zero. Some treatments, particularly in the early sown plots and those treated with pirimicarb, however, did allow some recolonisation, and thus led to increased virus incidence and decreased yields. Sprays applied before the end of the migration of S. avenae were more efficient at controlling BYDV if the insecticide was persistent, otherwise a spray after this period, in November, was more effective. Virus incidence, although reduced by sprays, was generally low in plots sown on 18 and 27 September. In contrast, about 11% of plants were infected in unsprayed plots sown on 6 September and a small yield benefit was obtained with insecticidal treatments. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of plants taken from the plots indicated that MAV- and PAV-like strains were present, and were most likely to have been transmitted by S. avenae.  相似文献

Small amounts (5.6 or n-2 kg a.i./ha) of aldicarb or oxamyl, incorporated in the soil before potatoes were planted in spring, controlled potato cyst-nematodes (Heterodera rostochiensis and H. pallida) on susceptible cultivars equally well in sandy, peaty and silt loam soils. In soils treated with either nematicide, nematode numbers increased little or decreased; in untreated soils nematode numbers increased greatly. In contrast organophosphate nematicides, similarly applied, fenamiphos (proposed BSI common name for O-ethyl-O-(3-methyl-4-methylthiophenyI)-isopropylamido-phosphate), ethoprophos (proposed BSI common name for (O-ethyl S, 5-dipropyl phos-phorodithioate), CGA 12223 (O, O-diethyl O-[i-isopropyl-5-chloro-i,2,4-triazoIyl-(3)] phosphorothioate) and Dowco 275 (O, O-diethyl O-(6-fluoro-2 pyridyl) phosphorothioate), were ineffective at one or more of the experimental sites. Potato yields were greatly increased by oximecarbamate or organophosphate nematicides only in soils heavily infested with the nematodes.  相似文献

Summary An investigation of phytoplankton in Astotin Lake was made between mid-May of 1966 and September of 1967 with particular attention to the ice-free seasons. Astotin Lake is a typical, small eutrophic, kettle lake with shallow, landlocked, hard water in the Canadian prairies. High concentrations of nutrients supported heavy blooms of blue-green algae throughout the summer. The spring communities were dominated by Asterionella formosa in 1966 and by Cyclotella meneghiniana in 1967. Oxygen depletion under ice-cover probably explains the failure of an Asterionella formosa population to appear in 1967. Deficiency of silica and a rise in water temperature apparently caused the decline of the spring pulses of diatoms. Relatively high summer water temperature favoured the blue-green algal blooms and resulted in a high concentration of organic matter. The decomposition of dead Anabaena cells played an important part in the development of subsequent waterblooms, i.e., Microcystis aeruginosa and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. The sequence of waterblooms of those species was closely related to the change in water temperature. A flos-aquae became incompatible with M. aeruginosa when the temperature fluctuated in a wide range. Most of the non-blue green algae apparently were inhibited by these cyanophyte blooms. Great species diversity appeared intermittently between blooms and a few species of the Scenedesmaceae and the Oocystaceae were relatively compatible to these blooms.Part of a thesis submitted to the Department of Botany, University of Alberta, Edmondton, Alberta, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the M. Although ascidians are conspicuous members of the fouling community not much is known regarding their recruitment patterns in coral reefs. A 1-year study was carried out along the Red Sea coast of Israel to examine the effects of season and spatial distribution on ascidian recruitment to artificial marine structures. In general, autumn and spring were characterized by higher coverage with a significantly higher percentage of cover of Didemnum granulatum in autumn and higher numbers of Herdmania momus in spring. These species contributed the most to similarity between treatments consequently setting the pattern for each group (colonial and solitary). Halocynthia spinosa had significantly higher numbers during winter and Phallusia nigra was absent in spring and winter. H. momus showed a preference for horizontal surfaces. P. nigra and Ascidia cannelata showed a preference for floating units. It is concluded that the ascidian recruitment patterns are species-specific and vary between seasons, orientation and position on the substrata and in the water column.  相似文献

The behaviour ofMyrmecia desertorum Wheeler andMyrmecia dispar (Clark) was studied in the field at intervals during winter and summer from 1963 to 1967. The daily and seasonal pattern and type of activity of the species differed considerably. In winter, the workers foraged in the late morning and afternoon, while in summer they foraged in the early morning and late afternoon. Both species foraged largely on nearby trees. Most of the worker population in twoM. dispar nests left to forage. The diet of both species was very dissimilar in summer when the workers foraged in large numbers.Field observations on orientation suggest that the workers memorize the position of trees on which to forage and that visual stimuli are important for capturing prey. Migration to new abodes by two colonies ofM. desertorum and transportation of workers are described.  相似文献

Synopsis Potential coexistence of the native Yaqui topminnow, Poeciliopsis occidentalis sonoriensis, with introduced mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, was examined in spring pools and streams in San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge, southeastern Arizona. Poeciliopsis never exceeded 12% of total poeciliid numbers in a spring pool where Gambusia was present. Body size, fecundity and reproductive effort of Poeciliopsis were significantly higher in this pool than in similar spring pools where Gambusia was absent. Where Poeciliopsis and Gambusia were syntopic in a stream, numbers of Poeciliopsis declined over 1.7 years, until none were collected. Poeciliopsis then increased to > 60% of total poeciliid numbers following flash flooding. Persistence of Poeciliopsis with Gambusia in the spring pool appeared to be a result of compensatory increase in reproductive output, while in the stream it was associated with recurrent flash flooding and a uniform temperature springhead which provided refuge.  相似文献

A study has been made on the distribution of crustaceans along a profile of 6–9 stations from depths of less than 2 m to 20 m, in summer, autumn and early spring. The species composition, abundance, size-frequency distribution, biomass and diurnal dynamics were estimated. Many species abundant in the pelagic zone were found to be absent or scarce out to depths of 5 m. In the daytime, at depths out to 3 m, crustaceans greater than 1.0 mm were seldom found, while those 0.15–0.40 mm long were most abundant. At depths out to 5 m, not only was the total average size of crustaceans found to be smaller, but also that of individual species, including small ones: Ceriodaphnia and Chydorus. The biomass of crustaceans in shallow water and in the open lake differs in summer by more than 100 times, and in late autumn and early spring by more than 10 times. At the depth of 1 m, in none of the seasons did it exceed 0.026 mg l-1. All the crustaceans except for nauplii and Chydorus considerably increased in numbers in the shallow water at night. The impoverishment of the littoral plankton in Lake Glubokoe is regarded as a specific case of the well-known phenomenon of ‘avoidance of the littoral’ by euplankton (Hutchinson, 1967; Kiselyov, 1980). It is pointed out that there is a possible relationship between diurnal horizontal migrations of plantivorous fish and the impoverishment of plankton near the shore. An attempt has been made to substantiate the assumption that the ‘avoidance of the littoral’ by pelagic crustaceans is due to high numbers of fish in shallow water.  相似文献

On a site infested with V. dahliae the incidence of wilt was low consistently in strawberry cvs Talisman and Redgauntlet, high in Merton Herald and Gorella, and very high in Merton Ruby, Cambridge Vigour, Prizewinner, Templar and Crusader. Changes in mean volume per plant for the whole population of each cultivar were closely related to disease incidence and therefore differed between high-resistance and low-resistance cultivars. Height and spread measurements of diseased and symptomless plants in certain cultivars showed differences in the severity of the effect of the pathogen on growth that were not closely related to wilt incidence. Gradients of disease incidence and plant growth in 1966 and 1967 were associated with a transition from one soil series to another. Review of two earlier experiments on the same site revealed a similar gradient of disease incidence in 1963-64, but a reversed gradient in 1960-62. Variations related to soil conditions were smaller in the earlier experiments than in 1966-67.  相似文献
