We measured the acceptance and suitability of four aphid species [Aphis gossypii Glover, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), and Schizaphis graminum (Rondani)] (Homoptera: Aphididae) for the parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Female parasitoids parasitized fewer R. padi than the other three aphid species, and fewer offspring successfully completed development in R. padi than in the other three host species. Sex ratios of emerging adults were more male‐biased from R. padi than from the other three aphid species, suggesting that R. padi is a poor quality host for this population of A. colemani. Ovipositing A. colemani encountered R. padi at a slower rate, spent more time handling R. padi, and parasitoid offspring died at a higher rate in R. padi compared to A. gossypii. Our results show that oviposition behavior and offspring performance are correlated. In each experiment, we tested the effect of the host species in which the parasitoids developed (parental host) on the number of hosts attacked, the proportion of each host species accepted for oviposition and the survival of progeny. Parental host affected maternal body size and, through its effect on body size, the rate of encounter with hosts. Other than this, parental host species did not affect parasitism.  相似文献

The symbiosis between grasses and endophytic fungi is a common phenomenon and can affect herbivore performance through acquired, chemical plant defence by fungal alkaloids. In laboratory experiments, two species of common grass aphids, Rhopalosiphum padi and Metopolophium dirhodum were tested, in a population experiment (on four plant cultivars) and individually (on one plant cultivar) for the effects of the endophyte, Neotyphodium lolii, that forms symbiotic associations with perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne. In the population experiment that lasted for four aphid generations both aphid species showed decreased population sizes when feeding on each of the four endophyte-infected cultivars. Individuals of R. padi tested individually showed reduced adult life span and fecundity when feeding on infected plants. Individuals of M. dirhodum showed no response in any of the traits measured. This suggests that R. padi individuals are more sensitive to endophyte infection than M. dirhodum individuals. However, all infected grass cultivars reduced population sizes of both aphid species over four generations. Therefore, fungal endophytes can reduce populations of aphid herbivores independent of plant cultivars.  相似文献

Many aphid species exhibit a variation in reproductive mode which is influenced by winter climate regimes, with cyclical parthenogenetic (CP)lines dominating in cold winter areas (because they produce cold-resistant eggs)and obligate parthenogenetic (OP) ones in mild winter regions (because of their parthenogenetic overwintering).Genetic studies on several aphid species have shown that the OP trait can be transmitted during sexual events involving the 2 types of lines. This genetic system could be considered as a local safeguarding mechanism for OP alleles in case severe frost would have killed all parthenogenetically overwintering individuals. However, this strategy would only be efficient in restoring local polymorphism in breeding systems if the newly hatched OP recombinants remain competitive over their CP counterparts. In this study we compared egg hatching sequences of CP and OP F1 clones from several crosses obtained for 2 cereal aphid species,Sitobion avenae (constant 5℃,8 h of light)and Rhopalosiphum padi (winter outdoor conditions). For S.avenae,we obtained F1 offspring from 6 crosses, involving 4 clones while in R.padi F1 were obtained from 11 crosses involving 14 clones. We showed that in both species proportions of OP clones were higher in the first half of the progeny relative to the second half.In addition,F1 OP clones hatched in the mean about a week earlier than their CP sibs, which gives them a demographic advantage at the start of the growth season. We then discussed the consequences of this fitness advantage for the maintenance and spread of the OP trait in aphid populations.  相似文献

Predation by two carabid species,Bembidion lampros (Herbst.) andPterostichus cupreus L., on the cereal aphid,Rhopalsiphum padi L., was described using a discrete event simulation model. The results were incorporated into an aphid population growth model. The aphid model was run using actual temperatures,R. padi emigration rates, field densities and distributions from three years with distinctly different aphid population levels. Predation was incorporated at different time periods. Predation during the arrival of emigrants and establishment of aphid populations had approximately the same effect as predation over the entire aphid period, whereas predation during the 20 days prior to peak had very little effect on resulting peak populations. We conclude that a) yearly levels ofR. padi infestation are mainly determined by the volume and intensity of emigrants; b) peak levels are sensitive to changes in predator density; and c) in some cases an outbreak ofR. padi may be prevented by the action of spring active polyphagous predators alone.  相似文献

Gut content analysis is a useful tool when studying arthropod predator-prey interactions. We used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique to examine how detection of prey DNA in the gut content of predators was influenced by digestion time and temperature. Such knowledge is critical before applying PCR-based gut content analysis to field collected predators. Larvae of the two-spotted ladybeetle (Adalia bipunctata L.) were fed with the bird cherry-oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi L.) at either 21℃ or 14℃. After consuming one aphid, the predators were allowed to digest the prey for a range of time periods up to 24 hours. The influence of temperature on A. bipunctata feeding behavior was also recorded. From the fed larvae, total DNA was extracted and PCR reactions with R. padi specific primers were run. The number ofA. bipunctata that tested positive for R. padi DNA was negatively related to the length of digestion time. Temperature influenced larval feeding behavior but did not have a significant effect on R. padi DNA detection. After pooling the data from both temperature treatments we estimated the time point when R. padi DNA could be amplified from 50% of the fed A. bipunctata by PCR to be 4.87 hours. With such a rapid decrease in prey DNA detection success, positive PCR reactions will most likely be the result of predation events occurring shortly before capture. If a defined digestion temperature range has proven not to influence prey detection, PCR data obtained from predators collected within that particular range can be interpreted in the same way.  相似文献

Although aphids are the most species-rich group of invasive alien insects across the Southern Ocean Islands, their biology on the islands is poorly known. In this study, host plant-related, seasonal and altitudinal variation in the abundance of the three aphid species (Macrosiphum euphorbiae, Myzus ascalonicus, Rhopalosiphum padi) found on sub-Antarctic Marion Island is examined. Myzus ascalonicus is the most abundant of the species, reaching densities of c. 2,400 individuals per 1,200 cm2 on the indigenous Acaena magellanica (Rosaceae) and 479 individuals per 1,200 cm2 on the indigenous Cotula plumosa (Asteraceae), with lower numbers at elevations up to 300 m and a pronounced seasonal peak in December-February. Macrosiphum euphorbiae occurs on the same plant species in densities of between c. 11 individuals per 1,200 cm2 on C. plumosa and c. 200 individuals per 1,200 cm2 on A. magellanica, and with a pronounced summer peak in December. In both species, small numbers of winged forms are found (c. 1–5%), although they are permanently parthenogenetic on the island. Rhopalosiphum padi is also permanently parthenogenetic on the island and likewise shows a December peak in abundance. The current data suggest that low ambient temperatures, which are close to the lower development threshold of R. padi, and other temperate aphid species, limit development in winter, thus leading to a decline in abundance.  相似文献

The host alternating aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), feeds in summer on several different species of grasses but is monophagous on its winter host, Prunus padus L. The monophagy on P. padus could be a result of the restricted host range of the several different generations colonizing, or feeding, on this host during autumn–winter–spring. This study shows that the winter host plant specificity of R. padi is controlled mainly by the preference of the females remigrating (gynoparae) to the winter host, P. padus, in autumn. The other generations living on the winter host, i.e., sexual females, males, and spring generations, all accept a broader range of winter hosts. One alternative host plant, Prunus spinosa L., could be utilized by all generations associated with the winter host, except for the females remigrating at autumn.  相似文献

Many aphid species have shown remarkable adaptability by invading new habitats and agricultural crops, although they are parthenogenetic and might be expected to show limited genetic variation. To determine if the mode of reproduction limits the level of genetic variation in adaptively important traits, we assess variation in 15 life history traits of the pea aphid, Acyrhosiphon pisum (Harris), for five populations sampled along a north-south transect in central North America, and for three traits for three populations from eastern Australia. The traits are developmental times and rates as affected by temperature, body weights as affected by temperature, fecundity, measures of migratory tendency, and photoperiodic responses. The most southerly population from North America is shown to be obligately parthenogenetic, as are the Australian populations, and the four more northerly North American populations are facultatively parthenogenetic with the number of parthenogenetic generations per year increasing from north to south. The broad-sense heritabilities of life history traits varied from 0.36 to 0.71 for nine quantitive traits based on a comparison of within-and between-lineage variances. Using these traits, 7–13 distinct genotypes (i.e. clones) were identified among each of the 18 lines sampled from the North American populations, but the number did not differ significantly among populations. The level of genetic variation differed from trait to trait. For 4 of 12 quantitative traits, the level of variation in the obligately parthenogenetic population from North America was lowest, but significantly lower than all the sexual populations for only 1 trait. The obligately parthenogenetic population had the highest level of genetic variation for two traits, and had intermediate levels for the others. The most northerly population, which was sexual and had relatively few parthenogenetic generations each year, had the lowest level of variation for 5 of 12 traits and the highest level of variation for 2 traits. There was no decline in variability from north to south correlated with the increase in the annual number of parthenogenetic generations. The Australian populations showed no less variation than the North American populations for two of three traits, although the pea aphid was introduced to Australia only 5 years prior to the study, whereas the aphid has been in North America for at least 100 years. The mode of reproduction has not had a substantial impact on the level of genetic variation in life history traits of the pea aphid, but there are population-specific factors that effect the level of variation in certain traits.  相似文献

  1. Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus, 1758) is abundant and has a broad geographic distribution. It is one of the most important cereal pests. In Brazil, the economic losses associated with this aphid result mainly from the transmission of the barley yellow dwarf viruses.
  2. Decision-making for the adoption of management measures must consider the initial population size, the potential for population increase, and the time when this population will reach levels at which the resulting damage is equal to the costs of control measures. Consequently, the establishment of management programmes and decision support systems should be based on models that estimate the potential population growth of this pest species.
  3. Temperature is one of the main factors that determine the growth rate of insect populations. Generally, controlled experiments are designed to examine the relationship of temperature at fixed intervals in relation to the development phases of insects. In nature, thermal regimes are not constant, and population growth is the result of a series of combined events.
  4. In this work, the effects of different thermal regimes on the population growth of R. padi were compared.
  5. An agent-based model was used to estimate population growth, and the parameters defined in controlled regimes were compared with fluctuating temperatures under natural conditions.
  6. The temperature-driven model presented here can serve as a tool to predict population growth and decision-making for aphid management.
  7. The model structure and the proposed experimental design allow the addition of modules and layers of factors that can progressively affect the populations of aphids to gradually improve the model.

1. Maternal and offspring diet effects on life‐history traits of the bird cherry‐oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi were tested on three wheat varieties. Using nine reciprocal combinations of wheat varieties, the effects of previous experience (maternal diet effect) on the aphid's response to resistant and susceptible varieties (offspring diet effect) were tested. Batis was susceptible, and Xiaoyan22 and Ww2730 were both resistant, but with different mechanisms. 2. Aphids produced the most alatae in the treatments with the most resistant maternal diet variety Xiaoyan22. The fecundity (F) and intrinsic rate of increase (rm) of these alatae were at their greatest in the most resistant offspring diet variety, but these traits were not influenced in the apterae. 3. There were significant interactions in the alatae production and apterae life‐history traits, such as rm, development time, weight gain, and mean relative growth rate, between the maternal and offspring diet varieties. The interactions in apterae responses between varieties, some of which were reciprocal, indicated phenotypic plasticity in these parthenogenetic aphids. 4. Rhopalosiphum padi produced more alatae on the most resistant variety; the alatae would disperse and were more fecund. The growth responses of the apterae showed phenotypic plasticity to the different combinations of maternal and offspring diet varieties. The phenotypic plasticity would allow R. padi to better utilise the variable environments represented by the small wheat plots of different varieties in China.  相似文献

Bacterial endosymbionts have enabled aphids to adapt to a range of stressors, but their effects in many aphid species remain to be established. The bird cherry-oat aphid,Rhopalosiphum padi(Linnaeus),is an important pest of cereals worldwide and has been reported to form symbiotic associations with Serratia symbiotica and Sitobion miscanthi L-type symbiont endobacteria, although the resulting aphid phenotype has not been described. This study presents the first report of R.padi infection with the facultative bacterial endosymbiont Hamiltonella defensa.Individuals of R.padi were sampled from populations in Eastern Scotland,UK,and shown to represent seven R.padi genotypes based on the size of polymorphic microsatellite markers;two of these genotypes harbored H.defensa.In parasitism assays, survival of H.defensa-infected nymphs following attack by the parasitoid wasp Aphidius colemani(Viereck)was 5 fold higher than for uninfected nymphs.Aphid genotype was a major determinant of aphid performance on two Hordeum species,a modern cultivar of barley H.vulgare and a wild relative H.spontaneum, although aphids infected with H.defensa showed 16%lower nymph mass gain on the partially resistant wild relative compared with uninfected individuals. These findings suggest that deploying resistance traits in barley will favor the fittest R.padi genotypes, but symbiontinfected individuals will be favored when parasitoids are abundant, although these aphids will not achieve optimal performance on a poor quality host plant.  相似文献

Polyphagous predators (e.g. Araneae, Carabidae and Staphylinidae), collected from spring barley fields during 1981-85, were examined by either gut dissection or a R. padi-specific antiserum in enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in order to detect predation of Rhopalosiphum padi during the aphids' establishment and exponential growth phases. Overall 18% of c. 3000 carabids dissected were shown to feed on R. padi during the aphids' pre-peak period. No overall relationship was found between percentage carabids with R. padi in the diet and peak R. padi densities. Relatively high proportions of Bembidion spp. (particularly B. lampros) and Pterostichus cupreus fed on R. padi during the aphids' establishment phase, and proportions of those predator taxa containing R. padi increased with increasing R. padi densities in both high and low aphid density years. P. melanarius and Harpalus rufipes mainly fed on R. padi during the aphids' exponential growth phase. Overall 11% of c. 1350 predators examined in ELISA gave positive reactions to the R. padi antiserum. Relatively high proportions of linyphiid and lycosid spiders were positive throughout the aphid pre-peak period. Several Acari, Opiliones, Trechus spp. (Carabidae), Philonthus spp. (Staphylinidae), Cantharidae and Chilopoda were positive mainly during the aphids' exponential growth phase. Sample sizes were small, however. Very few of the Bembidion spp. tested in ELISA were positive compared with those examined by gut dissection. The maximum period of R. padi protein (antigen) detection in B. lampros was related to temperature, i.e. 8.5 h at 30°C, 20.5 h at 20°C and 34.5 h at 10°C, respectively. It is suggested that the rate of R. padi protein digestion in B. lampros is faster at higher temperatures than the rate of elimination of prey solids from the guts. Several key predators (in this case B. lampros, P. cupreus and linyphiid spiders) which are abundant in spring cereal fields at a time when R. padi emigrants arrive in the crop and which feed on R. padi during the aphids' establishment phase, are identified. The results are compared with those from similar investigations elsewhere with predators of Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum.  相似文献

The value of three cereal aphid species as food for a generalist predator   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The value of the cereal aphid species Metopolophium dirhodum (Wlk.), Sitobion avenae (F.) and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) as prey for the linyphiid spider Erigone atra (Bl.) was assessed. Fecundity of females was determined for spiders fed on eight experimental diets: three single‐species aphid diets, a mixed diet of all three aphid species, three mixed diets with each aphid species in combination with fruit flies Drosophila melanogaster (Meig.), and pure D. melanogaster as a high quality comparison diet. The development and survival of first‐instar juveniles fed on three diets of single aphid species, and on a diet of Collembola were compared with those subjected to starvation. Prey value for adult females was assessed by egg production, hatching success and offspring size. In pure diets all three aphid species were of low value to the spiders, causing a rapid decline in egg production and supporting no growth of significance of first‐instar juveniles. No difference in value of aphid species of single‐species aphid diets was found in the fecundity experiment, while a ranking of aphid species of M. dirhodum > R. padi > S. avenae was revealed in the survivorship experiment. A mixed‐aphid diet was not found to be advantageous compared with single‐species aphid diets, and no advantage of including aphids in mixed diets with fruit flies was found. Metopolophium dirhodum and R. padi were neutral in mixed diets, while a diet of S. avenae and fruit flies caused reduced egg production compared with the pure diet of fruit flies, revealing a toxic effect of S. avenae on the spider. The value‐ranking of aphid species in mixed diets was similar to that of single‐species diets. A similar ranking of aphid species was found for different fitness parameters (fecundity of adult females and development of juveniles). A ranking of aphids by offspring size of mothers on aphid‐only diets was S. avenae > M. dirhodum > R. padi. All aphid‐fruit fly diets resulted in larger offspring than a diet of only D. melanogaster, with the overall largest offspring being produced on the diet of M. dirhodum and fruit flies.  相似文献

The relative fitness rule states that parasitoid females should adopt risk‐prone reproductive behaviours when expecting low reproductive success. Temperature influences the reproductive success of insects by affecting their basal metabolic rate during development, their egg load at emergence, and their life expectancy as adults. Using an aphid–parasitoid model system, we investigated the influence of developmental and adult temperature on the risk‐sensitive decision‐making of females. We considered the use of a low‐quality host nymphal instar by the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi to be a risk‐prone behaviour. Immature females were reared at 12, 20 or 28 °C and had access to the four nymphal instars of the potato aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae for oviposition at one of these temperatures. Host selection behaviour was continuously recorded during exploitation of an aphid patch. We observed that warm‐developed females and parasitoids foraging at high temperature attacked low‐quality hosts more frequently than females from other treatments. These results support the hypothesis that a decrease in expected parasitoid reproductive success resulted in risk‐prone behaviours. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental evidence suggesting that temperature influences host stage selection and risk‐sensitive making decision in parasitoids, and the present study is the first to support the relative fitness rule. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, ●●, ●●–●●.  相似文献

Although aphids are among the most injurious of all agronomic insect pests, much remains unknown about how their feeding alters plant physiology. Two experiments were conducted to examine the physiological responses of wheat, Triticum aestivum L. and barley, Hordeum vulgare L. to injury by Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Gas-exchange parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence, and chlorophyll content were examined at 3, 6, and 9 days post-infestation on control and aphid (D. noxia and R. padi) infested treatments. In general, chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (non-variable minimal fluorescence, maximal fluorescence, and variable fluorescence) were not significantly affected by either aphid species. Photochemical and non-photochemical quenching coefficients were significantly impacted by both aphid species, suggesting that aphid feeding may influence the photoprotective xanthophyll cycle altering the thylakoid membrane pH gradient. Feeding by both aphid species resulted in an increase in electron transport rate, but at different time periods. Wheat plants infested with D. noxia had accelerated declines in photosynthetic capacity when compared to R. padi-infested and control plants. These plants exhibited decreased values for Amax, which was accompanied by decreased values for Vcmax and Jmax Neither aphid species negatively affected the photosynthetic capacity of the barley plants until day 9. At this time, aphid-infested plants had decreased values for Amax which was accompanied by decreased values in Jmax. Although R. padi feeding does not typically result in visual damage symptoms as previously demonstrated, clearly this aphid does have an impact on the gas-exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence of its host plants. The acquisition and transmission of cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) by six aphid species and three clones of aphids was studied and compared with that of turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) with Myzus persicae. Two clones of Aphis fabae were unable to transmit CaMV, but the other species, Acyrthosiphon pisum, Brevicoryne brassicae, Megoura viciae, M. persicae and Rhopalosiphum padi transmitted in a bior multi-phasic manner. There was no statistical evidence of a bimodal transmission pattern. R. padi is recorded as a vector of CaMV for the first time. The transmission efficiency of CaMV varied with time of acquisition and suggested that accumulation of the virus occurred with two peaks of efficiency within the anterior region of the insect gut. The time at which these two peaks occurred varied between the species, but the basic pattern was common to all transmitting aphid species in this study. This pattern contrasted with that of TuMV. The transmission data are discussed in terms of bimodal transmission, the influence of feeding behaviour, the role of a helper protein associated with both TuMV and CaMV and the evidence for site specific attachment of CaMV.  相似文献

Activities of the detoxification enzymes esterase, glutathione S‐transferase, and of superoxide dismutase in aphids and aphid‐infested cereal leaves were assayed using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and a spectrophotometer to elucidate the enzymatic mechanisms of aphid resistance in cereal plants. A chlorosis‐eliciting Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), and non‐chlorosis‐eliciting bird cherry‐oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), and four cereals were used in this study. The four cereal genotypes were ‘Arapahoe’ (susceptible) and ‘Halt’ (resistant) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), ‘Morex’ (susceptible) barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), and ‘Border’ (resistant) oat (Avena sativa L.). Esterase isozymes differed between the two aphid species, although glutathione S‐transferase and superoxide dismutase did not. Esterase, glutathione S‐transferase, and superoxide dismutase activities in either aphid species were not affected by the level of resistance of a cereal to D. noxia. The assays of cereal leaf samples showed that D. noxia feeding elicited an increase in esterase activity in all four cereal genotypes, although R. padi feeding did not. The increase of esterase activity in cereals, however, was not correlated to aphid resistance in the cereals. The time‐series assays of aphid‐infested cereal leaves showed that D. noxia‐infested Morex barley had a significant increase in esterase activity on all sampling dates (3, 6, and 9 days) in comparison with either uninfested or R. padi‐infested barley. No difference in glutathione S‐transferase activity was detected among either aphid infestations or sampling dates. The electrophoretic assays, however, revealed that aphid feeding elicited a significant increase in superoxide dismutase activity, which served as the control of glutathione S‐transferase activity assays. The increase in esterase and superoxide dismutase activities suggested that D. noxia feeding imposes not only toxic, but also oxidative stresses on the cereals. The ramification of using these enzyme activity data to understand the etiology of D. noxia‐elicited chlorosis is discussed.  相似文献

Morph determination in the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi L   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Both crowding and poor nutrition induce the appearance of emigrants in Rhopalosiphum padi L. No emigrants developed when the aphid was reared in isolation for six successive generations on actively growing leaves of bird cherry. However, emigrants developed as soon as the leaves ceased to grow or when the aphids became crowded. Crowding of mothers and postnatal crowding of the nymphs of apterous exules both influenced the induction of alate exules. The highest proportion of alate exules developed when both mother and offspring were crowded. Short day-length induced the appearance of gynoparae and males. For 50% production of gynoparae and males, over the range of temperature 10–18d?C, a 1.75 h reduction in day-length is required for every 4d? increase in temperature. At 18 d?C, even at day-lengths as short as 6 h, exposure for three generations is required before all offspring become gynoparae or males. Low temperature and short day-length was ineffective in inducing the development of gynoparae or males in the first three generations developing from the fundatrix.  相似文献

Banker plants, a type of open-rearing unit, are increasingly used in greenhouse crops to sustain natural enemy populations at times of low pest abundance. The most common banker plant system is a non-crop, cereal plant which supports Rhopalosiphum padi L. as an alternative host for Aphidius colemani Viereck. Although bottom-up effects of plants are known to affect natural enemies, this aspect has generally been ignored in previous investigations of banker plant efficacy. Here, we tested four cereal plant species with three varieties each to investigate host plant effects on R. padi and A. colemani. Though limited differences were observed in laboratory experiments spanning one aphid or parasitoid generation, longer greenhouse experiments spanning several generations revealed significant plant effects on both insects. R. padi performed poorly on oats (Avena sativa L.), resulting in wasps with the longest female development time, lowest emergence rates, and the lowest number of wasps produced per unit. Rye (Secale cereal L.) – intermediate in terms of aphid performance – produced a significantly male-biased wasp population with the smallest males. Conversely, R. padi placed onto either wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) performed consistently well in terms of aphid and parasitoid fitness and abundance, though neither species was obviously superior over the other. Overall, cultivars within each plant species did not significantly affect outcomes. As each plant species tested had different positive effects on aphid and parasitoid phenotypes, the potential benefits of mixing of cereal species is an area for future investigation.  相似文献

We studied the food quality of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi to the pirate bug Orius majusculus using Ephestia eggs as high-quality comparison prey. Several performance parameters were tested on individuals that had been reared and maintained on each of the two single-prey diets or on a mixed diet. All fitness parameters were lower in individuals fed aphids only, indicating poor food quality of this prey. Compared with the pure Ephestia egg diet, the mixed diet enhanced teneral mass, while adult survival and female starvation tolerance were negatively affected and all other traits were unaffected. Body protein proportions were constant across diets, whereas lipid proportion was low in the aphid treatment. Preference for aphids was lower following a monotypic aphid diet than when reared on Ephestia eggs or a mixed diet. The results confirm that R. padi is low-quality food for O. majusculus as it is for other generalist predators, even though O. majusculus may contribute significantly to population suppression of the aphid.  相似文献
