1. 1.|The effect of thyroidectomy at 12 days of age on weight gain, and on heat production and thermoregulatory ability of 4- to 5-week-old chickens at temperatures within and below the thermo-neutral zone was investigated.

2. 2.|Despit the absence of thyroid tissue, as demonstrated with radioiodine, a small amount of thyroxine was found in the plasma of some thyroidectomized (TX) birds.

3. 3.|Thyroidectomy depressed weight gain; pair-fed controls grew significantly faster than TX birds.

4. 4.|Resting heat production of TX birds at thermoneutrality (30°C) was depressed by 18% (P < 0.001) and body temperature by 0.4°C (P < 0.001).

5. 5.|At 12°C heat production of TX birds was similar to that of controls but the body temperature of TX birds was 0.7°C lower (P < 0.001).

6. 6.|Thyroidectomized birds were unable to regulate body temperature at 5°C even if thyroxine was provided on the day before and at the time of cold-exposure. This inability to thermoregulate was probably due to inadequate insulation and poor nutritional status.

1. 1. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of thermal radiation and wind on thermal responses at rest and during exercise in a cold environment.

2. 2. The experimental conditions were radiation and wind (R + W), no radiation and wind (W), radiation and no wind (R), no radiation and no wind (C).

3. 3. The air temperature was −5°C. Thermal radiation was 360 W/m2. Air velocities were 0.76, 1.73 and 2.8 m/s. Rectal and skin temperatures, heart rate and oxygen consumption were recorded. Thermal and comfort sensations were questioned.

4. 4. There are no significant effects of thermal radiation and wind on the physiological responses except the mean skin temperature. There are significant effects on the mean skin temperature (P < 0.01) and thermal sensation (P < 0.05).

1. 1.|An experiment was carried out to examine the effects of various levels of infra-red (i.r.) radiation on rectal temperature (RT) and respiration rate (RR) in New Zealand While rabbits.

2. 2.|A 4 × 3 × 6 factorial design was employed in which the factors were: four intensities of i.r. radiant heating of 0.0, 1.9, 2.1 and 2.4 MJ/m2/h, three replicates and six rabbits.

3. 3.|rectal temperature differed (P < 0.05) between treatments and were highest at the “high” level of i.r. radiation (1°C higher than for controls). At the “medium” and “low” levels of i.r. heating RTs were respectively 0.3 and 0.2°C higher than in controls.

4. 4.|At different levels of radiation RR were different (P < 0.05), with the highest (422.7 ± 218.1 breaths/min) at 2.4 MJ/m2/h i.r. radiant heating. This RR was almost 2.5 times that in controls, while at the “low” and “medium” i.r. levels RR values were respectively 1.5 and 2 times those of controls.

1. 1.|Fourteen male volunteers were examined under passive heating.

2. 2.|Electrical skin resistance (ESR) and rectal temperature (Tre) were measured during the whole period of exposure.

3. 3.|It was found that:

• —|ESR decreases rapidly with increasing air temperature. Assuming an exponential curve yields a mean time constant of 14 min.

• —|There is a correlation between the individual ESR time constants and Tre increases (r = 0.695, P < 0.005).

• —|Additional changes of ESR were noted in 8 subjects at a constant air temperature of 42°C.

4. 4.|It is concluded that ESR may be a useful indicator of the sweating response of the human thermoregulatory system during exogenous heat load.

1. 1.|Pyridostigmine administration decreased resting heart rate by 11 ± 7 beats/min and resting oesophageal temperature by 0.23 ± 12°C after 50 h (P < 0.05). In addition, red blood cell cholinesterase activity was decreased an average of 43 ± 7% after 50 h of pyridostigmine treatment.

2. 2.|The lower heart rates and core temperatures at rest were continued during high intensity exercise in a 35°C environment. Whole body sweating was 12 ± 18% higher (P = 0.20) during exercise in the heat after 50 h of pyridostigmine treatment.

3. 3.|Repeated anticholinesterase administration had little effect on cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses during high intensity exercise.

1. 1.|Dinitrophenol (DNP) was administered to rats in two equal dosages (20 mg/kg, 30 min interval); the second injection was followed immediately by exercise (9.14 m/min) in the heat (30°C) or at room temperature (21°C).

2. 2.|At 21°C control (saline-treated) rats manifested a mean endurance of 94 min which was reduced to 32 min among DNP-treated animals.

3. 3.|At 30°C, control rats ran for 65 min (δTre/min = 0.05°C) while DNP-treated animals had a mean endurance of only 12 min (δTre/min = 0.22°C).

4. 4.|DNP-treated rats (30°C) manifested no decrements in tail-skin heat loss (δTsk/min = 0.17°C vs 0.10°C) or saliva secretion (0.78 g/min, DNP vs. 0.19 g/min, control) for their brief treadmill duration.

5. 5.|The increased metabolic heat production of DNP severely reduced performance.

1. 1.|Hypothalamic and rectal temperatures were recorded in 8 warm-reared (wr) and in 12 warm-acclimated control rats during resting in the heat and during 30 min running under thermoneutral conditions.

2. 2.|Brain and body temperatures of wr rats were significantly higher (P < 0.001) than control rats, both in normothermia as well as in hyperthermia; at rest, and also during exercise.

3. 3.|Warm-reared rats were more tolerant to heat.

4. 4.|During normothermia a weak selective brain cooling was present in control but absent in wr rats. During hyperthermia, however, the cooling intensified in control and occurred in wr rats.

5. 5.|The main strategy of adaptation to heat in wr rats is an upward resetting of the temperature set-point and increased passivity.

1. 1.|In 15 conscious Pekin ducks, 40 “warm sensitive” hypothalamic neurons were identified according to their discharge rates at 40°C Thy (F40), local temperature coefficients (Δ/ΔT) and Q10.

2. 2.|Q10 and either F40 or ΔFT were little or not related.

3. 3.|A positive correlation between F40 and ΔFT was observed which was particularly close (r = 0.94 and 0.96) when the neurons were classified according to their Q10 of <2 and >2.

4. 4.|The results suggest that neurons with positive temperature coefficients in the duck's hypothalamus mostly exhibit linear to exponential temperature-discharge relationships.

5. 5.|This is an contrast to observations on mammalian hypothalamic thermosensitive neurons and may relate to the absence of the thermosensory function in the duck's rostral brainstem.

1. 1.Preferred temperature ranges were determined for workers of 5 species of Myrmecocystus in a temperature gradient on wet sand.

2. 2.Workers of the diurnally foraging species, M. mendax Wheeler, M romainei Cole, M. depilis Forel, and M. mimicus Wheeler, were distributed between 7 and 45°C, and workers of one nocturnal species, M. mexicanus Wesmael, were distributed between 5 and 35°C.

3. 3.Mean preferred temperatures of the 5 species increased as follows: mexicanus < mendax < romainei < depilis < mimicus.

4. 4.Preferred temperatures of M. romainei and M. mexicanus were higher in the summer than in the fall.

5. 5.After 2 h in the gradient on dry sand, workers of M. romainei were distributed similarly to those on wet sand, but after 8 h on dry sand, most workers were below 12°C where the air was saturated.

1. 1.|The thermal resistance of the activity of frontal cilia in the median gills of the fresh water mussel Anodonta anatina was studied.

2. 2.|The resistance acclimation appeared in 2 days in the gills of intact animals, but not in the isolated gills kept at 4, 14 and 24°C, for between 1 to 3 days.

3. 3.|Warm-acclimation increased the ACh sensitivity of the gills of intact mussels.

4. 4.|Isolation of the gills enhanced the thermal resistance.

5. 5.|ACh, choline and tetramethylammonium enhanced the thermal resistance in the isolated gills. whereas atropine and physostigmine diminished it.

6. 6.|It is concluded that in A. anatina the control if the thermal resistance is probably neural.

1. 1.|The effect of temperature on caecal function was examined in the naked mole-rat Heterocephalus glaber, a poikilothermic mammal, which consumes a high proportion of fibre in its natural diet.

2. 2.|The temperature of optimal caecal function was determined from fermentation data measure at three specifically chosen temperatures (28, 33 and 40°C).

3. 3.|There was no significant difference between gas production at 33 and 40°C, however, gas production was significantly lower at 28°C.

4. 4.|The relative proportions of the gases produced were markedly different at 33 and 40°C (P ≤ 0.01). More methane and hydrogen were produced at 33°C than at 40°C.

5. 5.|These data suggest that microbial organisms within the caecum were active and functioning more effectively at 33°C (the preferred body temperature of the naked mole-rat) than at the other two temperatures.

1. 1.|The mitochondrial outer membrane from goldfish contains on average approximately six times more phosholipid and eleven times more cholesterol than the inner membrane.

2. 2.|When acclimation temperature was lowered the amount of cholesterol to protein significantly decreased in the outer membrane, but remained unchanged in the inner membrane.

3. 3.|Although the amount of total phosphorus to cholesterol was not temperature dependent for inner membrane, it was found to be negatively correlated (P < 0.001) with acclimation temperature for outer membrane.

4. 4.|It is concluded that fluidity in the mitochondrial outer membrane is regulated by cholesterol whereas in the inner membrane, which contain very low quantities of this lipid, cholesterol has little or no influence on the fluidity properties.

1. 1.|The difference between tissue temperatures and ambient water temperatures (ΔT) of the ectothermic Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.) ranged between 0.2 and 0.6°C.

2. 2.|For fish held at 5.7°C there were no significant differences in ΔT of exercising fish and those of controls.

3. 3.|By contrast, for fish held at 1.7°C sustained exercise led to a significant increase in ΔT of all body compartments compared with fish held in standing water (controls).

4. 4.|It is suggested that Arctic charr are capable of a limited control of metabolic heat exchange between body compartments and surrounding water when subjected to sustained exercise and ambient temperatures <2°C.

2. 2.An art, Ocymyrmex robustior comprises 65.4% of the biomass of prey consumed by the ant-lions.

3. 3.O. robustior is active between surface temperatures of 27–68°C.

4. 4.Ant-lions tolerate high body temperatures (LD50 = 53.4°C).

5. 5.By exploiting the pit microclimate and by digging below the surface during extreme thermal loads, ant-lions can capture prey at surface temperatures of 13–63°C.

1. The influence of interspecific hybridization on temperature preferences and morphology was examined in newts, Triturus carnifex and Triturus dobrogicus, before and after metamorphosis.

2. Thermoregulatory behavior was measured in an aquatic thermal gradient (5–32.5 °C) during 24 h.

3. Hybrid temperature preferences were similar to preferences of maternal species in both premetamorphic larvae and recently metamorphosed individuals.

4. Hybrid morphology (i.e., forelimb length and axilla–groin distance) was intermediate relative to parental species.

5. The mismatch between morphology and thermal preference in hybrid phenotypes indicates potential hybrid disadvantage in both intermediate and parental habitats.

1. 1.|Pinealectomy did not significantly alter the length of the mean durations of individual hibernation bouts in adult Spermophilus tridecemlineatus.

2. 2.|Similarly, no statistically-significant differences in mean durations of individual hibernation bouts between pinealectomized and sham-pinealectomized group squirrels were observed for young-of-the year S. tridecemlineatus

3. 3.|Some apparent differences of pinealectomy are suggested as they relate to age, stage of hibernation cycle and time of year during which pinealectomies are performed.

4. 4.|Daily s.c. injections of 50 μg of melatonin late in the subjective photophase induced no statistically-significant differences in mean durations of individual hibernation bouts between either adult, female pinealectomized or intact S. tridecemlineatus and their respective controls.

5. 5.|Adult, female S. tridecemlineautus with reduced titres of endogenous melatonin displayed on statistically-significant difference in the mean duration of initial hibernation bouts compared with controls.

6. 6.|It is possible that melatonin per se or that pinealectomy or melatonin titre alterations are generally failing to induce any significant changes in the torpor/arousal cycles of seasonal hibernators; or that a parameter other than the duration of torpor/arousal cycles is being modulated by the pineal complex.

1. We studied responses of adult brine shrimp, Artemia franciscana, to high temperature, including LT50 determination, induced thermotolerance (ITT), the Hsp-70 family of stress proteins and protein synthesis before and after heat shock.

2. Adults were grown in laboratory cultures from encysted embryos (cysts) obtained from San Francisco Bay (SF) and much warmer culture ponds in Vietnam (V).

3. Adults from V cysts were more tolerant of high temperatures than those from SF cysts, but this difference essentially disappeared in the second generation of adults.

4. Levels of constitutive Hsc-70 were very low in adults of both groups, but were strongly upregulated by a sublethal heat shock (37°C, 30 min), with V adults showing the greater degree of upregulation. Heat shock also induced Hsp-67, to a greater extent in V compared to SF adults

5. Incorporation of 14C-leucine into protein did not result in the “classic” heat shock response, possibly due to increased permeability of heat-shocked animals to the tracer.
