Over 70% of the droppings of the gleaning bat Otonycteris hemprichii can contain scorpion fragments. Yet, some scorpions found in its desert habitat possess venom of the highest known toxicity, rendering them a very dangerous prey. In this study, we describe how O. hemprichii catches and handles scorpions, quantify its flight and echolocation behaviour in the field, investigate what sensory modality it uses to detect scorpions, and test whether it selects scorpions according to their size or toxicity. We confirmed that O. hemprichi is a whispering bat (approx. 80 dB peSPL) with short, multi-harmonic calls. In a flight room we also confirmed that O. hemprichii detects scorpions by their walking noises. Amplitudes of such noises were measured and they reach the flying bat at or below the level of echoes of the loess substrate. Bats dropped straight onto moving scorpions and were stung frequently even straight in their face. Stings did not change the bats’ behaviour and caused no signs of poisoning. Scorpions were eaten including poison gland and stinger. Bats showed no preference neither for any of the scorpion species nor their size suggesting they are generalist predators with regard to scorpions.  相似文献

The structure of diverticula of the female gonads was analyzed in two scorpions from the family Scorpionidae by means of standard microscopic techniques (light microscopy, histochemistry, transmission electron microscopy). In scorpions, the female gonad, termed the ovariuterus, participates in two consecutive processes: oogenesis and embryogenesis. In sexually reproducing scorpions, the ovariuterus is also involved in fertilization. Both scorpions under study reproduce sexually. They also represent the katoikogenic type of development, which means that oogenesis, fertilization, and embryogenesis take place in the diverticula, which are sac-like outpocketings of the ovariuterine tubules. Formation of a lumen in the diverticulum is indispensable for sperm entry to enable fertilization and subsequent embryogenesis. The aim of the study was to test our hypothesis that the diverticulum lumen forms due to the engagement of the centrally located stalk cells. In this report, we show that in two species of katoikogenic scorpions, at the final stages of oogenesis, the cytoplasm of the stalk cells contains secretory organelles. In the stages preceding fertilization, secretory activity of the stalk cells and fragmentation of their apical parts lead to formation of the diverticulum lumen by a process similar to “cord hollowing” that commonly occurs for lumen formation in other morphogenesis model systems.  相似文献

Biological observations on Chaerilus philippinus were based on specimens from the region of Appari, North of Luzon in the Philippines. The total duration of embryonic development was estimated as being between 110 to 136 days, while the moults between successive juvenile instars and adulthood took place at ages that averaged 7, 39, 73, 190 and 327 days. These developmental periods are shorter and different from those previously observed among species of non-buthid scorpions. They prove to be rather similar to those observed in buthid scorpions, however. Morphometric growth values of the different instars are similar or smaller than those of other species of scorpions that have been studied. Aspects of maternal care and social behaviour are also commented.  相似文献

A survey was conducted among 160 persons aged 64 year or more in Montreal who were receiving home care. They answered at home a questionnaire on their use of health care services and drugs, and showed the interviewer all the drugs they were taking. In comparison with similar data from elsewhere, the use of health care services (an average of 8.0 encounters with a physician per person per year) and of drugs (an average of 5.3 per person) by this group seems high. Perhaps this group of people was obviously sicker than others of the same age, but this remains to be shown. Moreover, despite the reported frequency of health problems, it is uncertain whether such use of services and drugs was necessary. The question is raised whether the home care system is doing for the patient what it was intended to do.  相似文献

Abstract. Ecdysis in scorpions has some common features in all species in which it has been examined. Immature scorpions about to molt become less active, and the cuticle changes in appearance. When humidity and other conditions are suitable, the animal begins ecdysis with cheliceral and pedipalpal movements and internal processes that tear the pleural membrane just ventral to the anterior and lateral edges of the carapace. The carapace is pushed upward from within, and the animal starts to emerge through the opening made by the elevated carapace. This is usually done in the prone position. As the anterior body emerges, the pedipalps and walking legs are stretched posteriorly with their distal ends temporarily confined within the old exoskeleton. The buthid scorpions Androctonus australis and Parabuthus transvaalicus become supine before they begin to emerge. Ecdysis is completed lying supine, and the animal rights itself shortly thereafter. A turnover from upright to supine is not seen at any other time in scorpions. After prone or supine extraction, the exuvium includes the cuticle of booklungs, bristles, and sensilla and is relatively intact except for the wedge-shaped opening at the anterior end.  相似文献

Scorpine and toxins specific for potassium channels of the family beta (beta-Ktx) are two types of structurally related scorpion venom components, characterized by an unusually long extended N-terminal segment, followed by a Cys-rich domain with some resemblance to other scorpion toxins. In this communication, we report evidence supporting the ubiquitous presence of Scorpine and beta-KTx-like polypeptides and their precursors in scorpions of the genus Tityus of the family Buthidae, but also included is the first example of such peptides in scorpions from the family Iuridae. Seven new beta-KTxs or Scorpine-like peptides and precursors are reported: five from the genus Tityus (T. costatus, T. discrepans and T. trivittatus) and two from Hadrurus gertschi. The cDNA precursors for all of these peptides were obtained by molecular cloning and their presence in the venoms were confirmed for various peptides. Analysis of the sequences revealed the existence of at least three distinct groups: (1) beta-KTx-like peptides from buthids; (2) Scorpine-like peptides from scorpionid and iurid scorpions; (3) heterogeneous peptides similar to BmTXKbeta of buthids and iurids. The biological function for most of these peptides is not well known; that is why they are here considered "orphan" peptides.  相似文献

The question of whether Arachnida (Chelicerata) conquered terrestrial habitats only once or several times is controversial. The key group in this respect is the Scorpiones. Several authors claim that they became terrestrial independently of other arachnid lineages. This argumentation uses two lines of evidence. One is that book lungs of scorpions and other arachnids are considered non-homologous because they occur on different segments. The other line is based on fossil evidence which suggests that early scorpions were aquatic, together with a putative sister group relationship between scorpions and the aquatic Eurypterida. To address this problem we undertook a comparative scanning electron microscopical and histological study of the book lungs of scorpions, amblypygids, uropygids, and mesothelid spiders. In addition, we included the book gills of a xiphosuran. We found several detailed similarities in the book lungs shared by all arachnid taxa studied. Based on these findings we conclude that arachnid book lungs are homologous. Furthermore, we suggest that the apomorphic book lungs of arachnids indicate a single terrestrialisation event in the stem lineage leading to Arachnida.  相似文献

Many environmental factors may influence the activity of scorpions in arid ecosystems. In this study, we examined the effects of such factors on scorpion activity at a mature and a secondary forest site in the Chancaní Reserve (Arid Chaco ecoregion in Córdoba, Argentina). Scorpions were collected using pitfall traps, and their nocturnal activity was observed by means of UV light during 14 nights. Temperature, air humidity, atmospheric pressure, and wind velocity were measured, and the percentage of visible moon was estimated. A total of 440 scorpions, representing seven species belonging to two families (Bothriuridae and Buthidae), were observed in the study area. Brachistosternus ferrugineus was the species most commonly observed using both methods. Mature and secondary forest shared slightly more than 50% of species. Surface activity of scorpions observed with the two methods differed significantly between the two areas. Surface activity of all scorpions and of B. ferrugineus were negatively related to the phase of the moon and positively related to air temperature. Physical factors thus have important effects on scorpion activity.  相似文献

Fifty-six cases of bacterial meningitides, other than tuberculous, observed in a period of one year on an active children''s hospital medical service were reviewed. All age groups were involved but most commonly infected were patients in the first year of life. There was no inordinate incidence of infection with any one kind of organism in any specific age bracket, except possibly for infection with enteric organisms which in the present series occurred preponderantly in infants less than six months old. Meningococcus and H. influenza type B were the most common organisms; they were the infecting agents in 71 per cent of cases. Of the immediate complications noted, subdural effusions were the most common (23 per cent of this series). In all except two cases, effusion was resolved by multiple aspirations. In two cases craniotomy was done with good results. Ten electroencephalograms were made and all were abnormal. In most of the patients, multiple antibiotic and chemotherapeutic drugs were used, parenterally during the first few days of hospitalization and then orally as tolerated. Intraspinal therapy was not given. Four of the 56 patients died.  相似文献

During the mating season, male desert scorpions are often found wandering through dune environments, presumably in search of female conspecifics. For a male desert scorpion, finding a receptive female is a potentially difficult and hazardous task, suggesting that wandering by the male may actually be a form of guided mate searching. In this study we examined whether male giant hairy desert scorpions (Hadrurus arizonensis) were capable of trailing female conspecifics using a Y-maze choice test. In three separate experiments, a significant proportion of male scorpions preferred the arm of the maze that a reproductive female scorpion had walked down. Male scorpions did not prefer maze arms that male conspecifics had walked down, indicating that this response was sex specific. When the substrate was repeatedly exposed to a reproductive female, males took significantly longer to complete the Y-maze test, exhibited an increase in pausing behavior, and displayed precourtship behaviors and a novel lunging behavior resembling sex-specific mate seizing behavior. The results from this study suggest that male H. arizonensis can orient and respond to substrate-borne signals from female conspecifics that are likely chemical in origin.  相似文献

The diet and feeding of the vaejovid scorpion Pamroctonus mesaensis Stahnke was investigated during a five-year study. Foraging and feeding behaviour are described. This scorpion is a "sit and wait" predator that eats a wide variety of cursorial, fossorial and aerial prey. Ninety-five prey species were recorded. Three year classes of scorpions exist. Each class captures a different proportion of major prey species and a significantly different average size of prey.
The proportion of each major taxon of prey in the diet is as follows: tenebrionid beetles (42%), Orthoptera (17%), other scorpions (16%) and Hymenoptera (12%). When analysed in relation to biomass, larger prey species assume more importance while smaller species are relatively less important. Although P. mesaensis ranks as the fourth most numerous prey species, they represent the most important diet item in terms of ingested biomass.
When observed, 3·75% of all scorpions were feeding. This percentage varied seasonally from a high in spring (7.0%) to a low in November and December (0.5 %). The proportions of major prey taxa in the diet also varied seasonally. Prey species were classified into three phenological categories: pulsed, seasonal and annual. In 1971, first bone bank was established at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Catholic University of Korea. The first clinical case was reported at the Journal of Korean Orthopaedic Association in 1973. Subsequently, more than 60 surgical bone banks were established in the university and teaching hospitals throughout country. In 1990, the Korea Biomaterial Research Institute (KBRI) organised the IAEA/RCA training course on tissue banking. In this course students from 17 countries participated. In 1994 the first collaboration for cadaver tissue recovery was performed. It is important to single out that the various religious groups in Korea have favourable attitudes towards tissue donation, which contributes to the success of the tissue banking programs in the country. The demands of allograft were getting increased in the Korean medical and dental society. Currently, 62 hospital based bone banks, 5 processing tissue banks, 1 regional tissue bank and more than 30 tissue distributors are working in Korea. Based on the U.S.A. usage of more than 1,000,000 grafts per year, 100,000–200,000 grafts will be needed in Korea. Those findings indicate a greatly increased need for training of tissue bank operators. The Korean society will need at least 20–30 tissue bank operators for training in every year. The National Training Centre (NTC) for tissue bank operators and medical personal using the IAEA Curriculum in the Korean languages was established in 2003. From 2004 to 2006, NTC have been trained 40 tissue bank operators. They have produced at least 10,000 tissues per year. These figures indicate a cost saving of US$ 10 million. Within 5 years, NTC will train 100 tissue bank operators. These individuals and their respective banks will provide an increasing number of high quality grafts to the communities they serve at a cost far less than if they were acquired from abroad.  相似文献

Scorpion venom has many components, but is mainly made up of water, salts, small molecules, peptides, and proteins. One can reasonably assume that the production and storage of this complex secretion is an expensive metabolic investment. However, to date, no study has addressed the costs associated with the regeneration of venom by scorpions. Using a closed-system respirometer, we examined the difference in oxygen consumption between milked and unmilked scorpions to determine the metabolic costs associated with the first 72 h of subsequent venom synthesis. During this time period, milked scorpions had a significantly higher (39%) metabolic rate than unmilked scorpions. The regenerated venom from a second milking had significantly lower (74%) protein concentration, suggesting that venom regeneration was incomplete after 72 h. The protein content in the regenerated venom was not correlated with oxygen consumption. The significant increase in oxygen consumption after milking supports existing hypotheses about the metabolic cost associated with venom regeneration and provides further insight on why scorpions appear to be judicious in their stinger use.  相似文献

With current losses of saltmarsh running at > 100 ha per year in the UK, creation of new intertidal habitats through managed realignment is likely to be increasingly used. Potentially, this has biodiversity as well as engineering benefits. However, assessing the conservation value of many of the current UK schemes is difficult as the biological monitoring has been generally poor, with a few notable exceptions. At the Tollesbury and Orplands realignment sites, Essex, bird communities were dominated by terrestrial species during the first year of inundation and waterbird communities rapidly developed during the second and third years. Five years after the initial breach in the sea wall, communities were similar to surrounding mudflats but with some notable exceptions. Dunlin Calidris alpina and Common Redshank Tringa totanus that prey on the early colonizing Nereis and Hydrobia used the sites in the first 2 years. Eurasian Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus did not occur on the realignment site as there were no large bivalves, whereas Red Knot Calidris canutus used the site after 4–5 years coincidentally with the appearance of Macoma balthica . The differences in the bird communities occurred because UK sites are often small, enclosed and poorly drained. If at a suitable height in the tidal frame, UK managed realignment sites are successful in that they have developed saltmarsh and biologically active mudflats but they may lack the full range of biodiversity found in surrounding natural intertidal habitats, even decades after inundation.  相似文献

Elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) and energycane (Saccharum spp. hybrid) are high‐yielding C4 grasses that are attractive biofuel feedstocks in the humid subtropics. Determining appropriate harvest management practices for optimal feedstock chemical composition is an important precursor to their successful use in production systems. In this research, we have investigated the effects of harvest timing and frequency on biomass nutrient, carbohydrate and lignin composition of UF1 and cv. Merkeron elephantgrasses and cv. L 79‐1002 energycane. Biomass properties under increased harvest frequency (twice per year) and delayed harvest (once per year after frost) were compared with a control (once per year prior to frost). There were no differences between elephantgrass entries in structural carbohydrates; however, elephantgrasses had greater structural hexose concentration than energycane for single‐harvest treatments (avg. 398 vs. 366 mg g?1), a trait that is preferred for biofuel production. Delayed harvest of energycane decreased structural hexose compared with the control (374 vs. 357 mg g?1) because nonstructural components accumulated in energycane stem as harvest was delayed. Frequent defoliation (2X) increased N, P, and ash concentrations (75% for N and P and 58% for ash) in harvested biomass compared with single‐harvest treatments. We conclude that multiple harvests per year increase the harvest period during which feedstock is available for processing, but they do not result in optimal feedstock composition. In contrast, extending the period of feedstock supply by delaying a single harvest to after first freeze did not negatively affect cell wall constituent properties, while it increased length of the harvest period by ~30 days in the southeast USA.  相似文献

Sclerophylly and synthesis of phenolic compounds are active responses of plants subjected to environmental stress (drought, low nutrient supply, u.v.-B radiation, ozone). Here we describe the morphological and histochemical alterations occurring in field-grown leaves of Fagus sylvatica L. from three sites located along an ecological gradient: from a site in cool and protected conditions to one located on a mountain ridge, where the trees grow on a thin layer of soil and are exposed to the wind and to intense solar radiation in summer. The morphological data show that, as the ecological conditions of the stand worsen, individual leaf surface decreases, while the thickness of the leaves and their specific d. wt (i.e. d. wt per unit leaf area) increases. Histochemical and ultrastructural tests show a marked increase of phenolics during the course of the year. These substances, present primarily in the leaves of trees growing in stress conditions, have been identified mainly as tannins. They accumulate in the vacuoles, especially those of the upper epidermal layer and the palisade mesophyll; at a later stage they appear to be solubilized in the cytoplasm and retranslocated, eventually impregnating the outer wall of the epidermal cells amidst the cellulose fibrils, where they cluster together and form an electron-opaque layer between the wall and the cuticle. Observation of the epidermal cells also reveals that the outer cell wall is thicker. The paper discusses the roles of secondary metabolites in protection and detoxification processes; the possible ecological significance of these alterations in the ecophysiology of beech trees.  相似文献

In this study I review the subject of biological rhythms in scorpions. This will include only some of the diel rhythmic endogenous physiological functions and not the locomotory rhythmicity, which will be dealt separately. Most studies reported here were conducted on 13 scorpion species that were studied in 39 different studies. Most of these (66.7%) were studies on a single species (Heterometrus fulvipes). Being a scorpionid, it sits and waits near its burrow not being very active, especially the females. The fact that experimenting was carried out irrespective of species diversity, gender, ecological or physiological conditions, and was usually done on animals kept in captivity for some time before the experimenting had started, is a major drawback to this kind of study. Although the main conclusion appears to be that enzymes reached their peak activity at 20.00 h, there are some exceptions showing otherwise that need further study in order to explain them.  相似文献
