We characterized stand structure and floristic composition of woody life forms in three, 16–18 yr old secondary stands that regenerated after pasture abandonment, and three nearby old-growth stands of tropical rain forest in lowland Costa Rica. Basal area and stem density for each of four plant size classes (seedlings, saplings, treelets, trees) were similar among stand types, but density of adult canopy palms (individuals 10 cm DBH), was lower in the secondary stands. We estimate that 15% of the basal area of stems 10 cm DBH correspond to remnant trees in our secondary stands. The observed rapid woody regrowth compared to other published studies in the lowland neotropics, can be attributed to moderate land use and possibly, to the influence of nutrient-rich volcanic soils in the study area. Overall, plant species richness was lower in the secondary stands, but this difference was less pronounced in the smallest size classes (seedlings, saplings). Median percent similarity of all pairwise stand comparisons showed that floristic composition of saplings (stems 1 m tall and 5 cm DBH) was more similar between secondary and old-growth stands than for trees (stems 10 cm DBH). Because the potential value of secondary forests in conserving woody plant diversity appears highest for the young size classes, we suggest that further studies on floristic composition, especially those addressing the dynamics of the understory component, are needed to refine our understanding of the role of this natural resource in the maintenance of plant biodiversity in disturbed landscapes.  相似文献

The natural forests of Yanbaru, in the northern part of Okinawa Island, harbor many endemic and endangered birds and mammals, and are dominated by an evergreen oak, Castanopsis sieboldii. The Simpson diversity (D) and equitability index (J) were calculated using survey data on number of stems ( 4.5 cm DBH) of each species found in sample plots.Near-climax old forests (age 50 yr, without pine trees) showed high species diversity of trees, 0.92 ± 0.01 in D and 0.83 ± 0.05 in J for trees of which DBH 4.5 cm, and 0.81 ± 0.04 in D and 0.75 ± 0.05 in J for trees of DBH 10 cm.These high values are comparable to those of tropical rain forests. Although even young forests showed high species diversity, diversity indices tended to increase with forest age.The U.S. Marine Corps leases the eastern half of Yanbaru which contains most of these near-climax forests. Conservation of natural forests in this area is recommended.  相似文献

The growth dynamics and mode of competition between adult trees 5.0cm in diameter at breast height (DBH) of nine abundant treespeciesoccupying ca. 85% of the total basal area were investigated in a 4ha study plot (200 m × 200 m) of awarm-temperate old-growth evergreen broad-leaved forest in the Tatera ForestReserve of Tsushima Island, southwestern Japan. In the plot, adult trees 5.0 cm DBH co-occurred with 35 woody plant species (except forwoody vine species). The most dominant and largest species,Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldiiexhibited a bimodal DBH distribution; it was found in both the upper and lowervertical layers. Other tree species had unimodal DBH distributionscorrespondingmostly to the lower vertical layer. We developed a model for individual growthincorporating both intra- and interspecific competition and degree ofcompetitive asymmetry. One-sided interspecific competition was detected in 17cases out of the 66 possible combinations on the scale of the 4 hastudy plot. The direction of interspecific competition was generally one-sidedfrom layer-I species to layer-II and III ones. The effects of two-sidedcompetition were detected only in layer-II and III species. OnlyDistylium racemosum exhibited one-sided intraspecificcompetition. We also found 11 cases of positive interspecific relationships.Generally, competitive relationships prevailed over positive relationshipsbetween adult trees in this warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved forest.Competition between adult trees 5.0 cm in DBH did not occurinthe same vertical layer, but occurred only between trees in different verticallayers. This suggests that competition between adult trees 5.0cm in DBH plays a key role in the variation in species coexistencebetween different vertical layers on the 4 ha scale of thewarm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved forests. Moreover, it was found bycomparing with three different forest types that interspecific competition ismore intense in warm-temperate forests than in cool-temperate or sub-borealforests. We conclude that, compared to cool-temperate or sub-boreal forests(which have little interspecific competition), warm-temperate forests supportmore complex interspecific relationships and species-specific habitatpreferences that result in higher species diversity.  相似文献

Phosphorylation of the subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2) is known to be an important translational control mechanism in all eukaryotes with the major exception of plants. Regulation of mammalian and yeast eIF2 activity is directly governed by specific phosphorylation on Ser-51. We now demonstrate that recombinant wheat wild-type (51S) but not mutant 51-Ala (51A) protein is phosphorylated by human PKR and yeast GCN2, which are defined eIF2 kinases. Further, only wheat wild-type eIF2 is a substrate for plant-encoded, double-stranded RNA-dependent kinase (pPKR) activity. Plant PKR and GCN2 phosphorylate recombinant yeast eIF2 51S but not the 51A mutant demonstrating that pPKR has recognition site capability similar to established eIF2 kinases. A truncated version of wild-type wheat eIF2 containing 51S but not the KGYID motif is not phosphorylated by either hPKR or pPKR suggesting that this putative eIF2 kinase docking domain is essential for phosphorylation. Taken together, these results demonstrate the homology among eukaryotic eIF2 species and eIF2 kinases and support the presence of a plant eIF2 phosphorylation pathway.  相似文献

Epiphytes and their contribution to canopy diversity   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
About ten percent of all vascular plant species world-wide are epiphytes and they are almost exclusively found in tropical forests. Therefore, they constitute a large part of the global plant biodiversity (10% of all species), and in tropical countries represent up to 25% of all vascular plant species. Focusing on the differences between epiphytes in the strict sense or holo-epiphytes (non-parasitic plants that use other plants – usually trees – as growing sites all through their life-cycle) and hemi-epiphytes (half epiphytes which only spend part of their life as epiphytes until their aerial roots become connected to the ground), horizontal and vertical distribution patterns of both in relation to some of their ecological requirements are compared. Vertical ecological gradients (i.e., insolation and humidity differences from the forest floor to the canopy surface) are relevant for the composition of the holo- epiphytic vegetation. For hemi-epiphytes, however, ecological differences between distinct forest habitats (i.e., horizontal gradients) are relevant, but not primarily the canopy structure, as the individual host tree structure is more important. The scale-dependence of epiphyte diversity assessment (relatively small study areas for holo-epiphytes, large study areas for hemi-epiphytes) is mainly due to the striking differences in plant sizes and related mechanical and physiological requirements.  相似文献

Physiognomy, structure and floristic composition of one hectare of lowland tropical rain forest was studied in detail at Los Tuxtlas, Mexico. Physiognomically, the Los Tuxtlas forest should be classified as lowland tropical high evergreen rain forest. The forest showed a closed canopy at 30–35 m. Of all woody, non-climbing species with a DBH1.0 cm 89.4% (94.5% of all individuals) were evergreen, 25.4% (59.5% of the individuals) had compound leaves, and over 80% of species (and individuals) had leaves in the notophyll and mesophyll size classes. The forest structure was characterized by a low density (2976 individuals with a DBH1.0 cm, 346 individuals with a DBH10.0 cm, per ha, excluding vines) with an average basal area (38.1 m2, DBH1.0 cm, 34.9 m2, DBH10.0 cm, per ha, excluding vines). This was attributed to the relative maturity of the forest on the study plot. The study plot contained 234 species (11 208 individuals with a height 0.5 m), of which 55.1% (34.8% of individuals) were trees, 9.4% (6.8%) shrubs, 3.4% (44.3%) palms, 20.1% (5.2%) vines, 6.8% (8.7%) herbs and 5.1% (0.3%) of unknown lifeform. Furthermore, 58 species of epiphytes and hemi-epiphytes were found. Diversity of trees, shrubs and palms with a DBH1.0 cm was calculated as Shannon-Wiener index (4.65), Equitability index (0.65), and Simpson index (0.10). The dominance-diversity curve showed a lognormal form, characteristic for tropical rain forest. The community structure was characterized by a relative dominance of Astrocaryum mexicanum in the understorey, Pseudolmedia oxyphyllaria in the middle storeys, and Nectandra ambigens in the canopy. Species population structures of 31 species showed three characteristic patterns, differentiated by recruitment: continuously high, discontinuously high, and continuously low recruitment. Height/diameter and crown cover/diameter diagrams suggested a very gradual shift from height growth to crown growth during tree development. Forest turnover was calculated as 138 years. Compared to other tropical rain forests the Los Tuxtlas forest had 1. similar leaf physiognomical characteristics, 2. a lower diversity, 3. a lower density, 4. an average basal area, and 5. a slow canopy turnover.  相似文献

We conducted a mesoscale transect sampling of trees 10cm DBH in the Lomako–Yekokora interfluvial forest, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Our objective was to characterize the forest landscape contained between the Lomako and Yekokora rivers in terms of its floristic composition and to investigate how representative the Lomako study site, the location of a long-term study of primates, was of the entire forest block. Fifteen transects were laid out at seven sample stations placed approximately 10km apart and alongside a 70km trail running from the Lomako study site to the margins of the Yekokora river. Three transects totaling 3.65ha were laid out at the Lomako study site and two transects totaling 2ha at each of the remaining six sample stations, amounting to 15.65ha in total. Average DBH, tree density, tree species richness and floristic composition were determined for each transect. There were 5353 trees 10cm DBH in the total sample, representing 150 species in 35 families. Caesalpinoideae trees dominated the sample followed by Olacaceae and Annonaceae. Four forest types were identified: mixed primary (57% of the sampled plots), secondary forest (9%), Gilbertiodendron (22%), and swamp (12%). The seven sample stations differed from each other in average DBH, tree density, tree species richness and floristic composition. Most of the difference, however, was due to the fact that the four forest types were not equally represented at each sample station. When forest types were contrasted independently, a marked difference in average DBH, tree density, tree species richness and floristic composition was recorded. Conversely, when only mixed primary forest was analyzed across the sample stations, no significant difference was detected except for average DBH. Thus the Lomako study site is representative of the forest landscape contained between the Lomako and Yekokora rivers only when the different forest types are treated separately. The sample stations (including Lomako) differ from each other, however, in the proportional contribution of each forest type.  相似文献

UDP-GlcNAc: Man1-6R (1-2)-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase II (GlcNAc-T II; EC 2.4.1.143) is a key enzyme in the synthesis of complexN-glycans. We have tested a series of synthetic analogues of the substrate Man1-6(GlcNAc1-2Man1-3)Man-O-octyl as substrates and inhibitors for rat liver GlcNAc-T II. The enzyme attachesN-acetylglucosamine in 1-2 linkage to the 2-OH of the Man1-6 residue. The 2-deoxy analogue is a competitive inhibitor (K i=0.13mm). The 2-O-methyl compound does not bind to the enzyme presumably due to steric hindrance. The 3-, 4- and 6-OH groups are not essential for binding or catalysis since the 3-, 4- and 6-deoxy and -O-methyl derivatives are all good substrates. Increasing the size of the substituent at the 3-position to pentyl and substituted pentyl groups causes competitive inhibition (K i=1.0–2.5mm). We have taken advantage of this effect to synthesize two potentially irreversible GlcNAc-T II inhibitors containing a photolabile 3-O-(4,4-azo)pentyl group and a 3-O-(5-iodoacetamido)pentyl group respectively. The data indicate that none of the hydroxyls of the Man1-6 residue are essential for binding although the 2- and 3-OH face the catalytic site of the enzyme. The 4-OH group of the Man-O-octyl residue is not essential for binding or catalysis since the 4-deoxy derivative is a good substrate; the 4-O-methyl derivative does not bind. This contrasts with GlcNAc-T I which cannot bind to the 4-deoxy-Man- substrate analogue. The data are compatible with our previous observations that a bisectingN-acetylglucosamine at the 4-OH position prevents both GlcNAc-T I and GlcNAc-T II catalysis. However, in the case of GlcNAc-T II, the bisectingN-acetylglucosamine prevents binding due to steric hindrance rather than to removal of an essential OH group. The 3-OH of the Man1-3 is an essential group for GlcNAc-T II since the 3-deoxy derivative does not bind to the enzyme. The trisaccharide GlcNAc1-2Man1-3Man-O-octyl is a good inhibitor (K i=0.9mm). The above data together with previous studies indicate that binding of the GlcNAc1-2Man1-3Man- arm of the branched substrate to the enzyme is essential for catalysis. Amyloid- (A) is the major protein component of neuritic plaques found in Alzheimer's disease. Evidence suggests that the physical aggregation state of A directly influences neurotoxicity and specific cellular biochemical events. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is used to investigate the three-dimensional structure of aggregated A and characterize aggregate/fibril size, structure, and distribution. Aggregates are characterized by fibril length and packing densities. The packing densities correspond to the differential thickness of fiber aggregates along az axis (fiber height above thex-y imaging surface). Densely packed aggregates (100 nm thick) were observed. At the edges of these densely packed regions and in dispersed regions, three types of A fibrils were observed. These were classified by fibril thickness into three size ranges: 2–3 nm thick, 4–6 nm thick, and 8–12 nm thick. Some of the two thicker classes of fibrils exhibited pronounced axial periodicity. Substructural features observed included fibril branching or annealing and a height periodicity which varied with fibril thickness. When identical samples were visualized with AFM and electron microscopy (EM) the thicker fibrils (4–6 nm and 8–12 nm thick) had similar morphology. In comparison, the densely packed regions of 100 nm thickness observed by AFM were difficult to resolve by EM. The small, 2- to 3-nm-thick, fibrils were not observed by EM even though they were routinely imaged by AFM. These studies demonstrate that AFM imaging of A fibrils can, for the first time, resolve nanometer-scale,z-axis, surface-height (thickness) fibril features. Concurrentx-y surface scans of fibrils reveal the surface submicrometer structure and organization of aggregated A. Thus, when AFM imaging of A is combined with, and correlated to, careful studies of cellular A toxicity it may be possible to relate certain A structural features to cellular neurotoxicity.  相似文献

We studied forest structure, composition and tree species diversity of eight plots in an environmental matrix of four altitudes (700, 1700, 2700 and 3100 m) and two types of geological substrates (ultrabasic and non-ultrabasic rocks) on Mount Kinabalu, Borneo. On both substrate series, forest stature, mean leaf area and tree species diversity (both 4.8 cm and 10 cm diameter at breast height [dbh]) decreased with altitude. The two forests on the different substrate series were similar at 700 m in structure, generic and familial composition and tree species diversity, but became dissimilar with increasing altitude. The decline in stature with altitude was steeper on the ultrabasic substrates than on the non-ultrabasic substrates, and tree species diversity was generally lower on ultrabasic substrates than on non-ultrabasic substrates at 1700 m. The forests on non-ultrabasic substrates at higher altitudes and those on ultrabasic substrates at the lower altitudes were similar in dbh versus tree height allometry, mean leaf area, and generic and familial composition at 1700 m. These contrasting patterns in forest structure and composition between the two substrate series suggested that altitudinal change was compressed on the ultrabasic substrates compared to the non-ultrabasic substrates. Tree species diversity was correlated with maximum tree height and estimated aboveground biomass, but was not with basal area, among the eight study sites. We suggest that forests with higher tree species diversity are characterized by greater biomass allocation to height growth relative to trunk diameter growth under more productive environment than forests with lower tree species diversity.  相似文献

The effect of carbonnitrogenphosphorus (CNP) ratio of organic substrates on the regeneration of ammonium and phosphate was investigated by growing natural assemblages of freshwater bacteria in mineral media supplemented with the simple organic C, N, and P sources (glucose, asparagine, and sodium glycerophosphate, respectively) to give 25 different substrate CNP ratios. Both ammonium and phosphate were regenerated when CN and NP atomic ratios of organic substrates were 101 and 161, respectively. Only ammonium was regenerated when CN and NP ratios were 101 and 10–201, respectively. On the other hand, neither ammonium nor phosphate was regenerated when CN and NP ratios were 151 and 51, respectively. In no case was phosphate alone regenerated. As bacteria were able to alter widely the CNP ratio of their biomass, the growth yield of bacteria appeared primarily dependent on the substrate carbon concentration, irrespective of a wide variation in the substrate CNP ratio.  相似文献

Electrophoretic analysis of the distribution of various electromorphs at different -glucosidase zones was carried out in natural populations ofA. nidulans, theA. nidulans group, and various species belonging to the genusAspergillus from diverse geographical areas of India. The data show the existence of three segregating zones for -glucosidase, designated -GluI, -GluII and -GluIII. All three zones are present in wild isolates ofA. nidulans, and only two, i.e., -GluI and -GluIII, in theA. nidulans group and -GluII and -GluIII in different species ofAspergillus exceptA. terreus, A. flavus, andA. brevipes, where only -GluIII is present. Overall nine electromorphs are observed at -GluI, three at -GluII, and six at -GluIII zones, respectively, It can be concluded that there may be three structural genes for -glucosidase coding the three polymorphic zones inA. nidulans.This research work was supported by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi.  相似文献

Summary -Glutamylamine cyclotransferase, an enzyme found in a number of animal tissues and cells, catalyzes the conversion of -(L--glutamyl)-L-lysine to free lysine and 5-oxo-L-proline as well as the release of free amines and the formation of 5-oxo-L-proline from a variety of other L--glutamylamines. Among its substrates are both the mono- and di--glutamyl derivatives of putrescine, spermidine and spermine, and a derivative of -(L--glutamyl)-L-lysine in which both the -amino group and the carboxyl group of the lysine moiety are blocked. The enzyme does not act on most -glutamyl--amino acids, nor is it active toward the -lysyl derivatives of L-aspartic acid or D-glutamic acid. Derivatives of -(L--glutamyl)-L-lysine in which the -amino or the -carboxyl function of the glutamyl moiety is blocked also do not serve as substrates. The specificity of -glutamylamine cyclotransferase is in accordance with the proposal that it functions biologically in the latter stages of the catabolism of products of the action of transglutaminases. Some suggestions as to the manner in which -glutamylamine cyclotransferase serves this function are made based on present knowledge of protein degradation.  相似文献

Relationships between spatial distributions and site conditions, namely topography and soil texture, were analyzed for two congeneric emergent trees, Dryobalanops aromatica and Dryobalanops lanceolata (Dipterocarpaceae), in a tropical rainforest in Sarawak, East Malaysia. A 52-ha permanent plot was divided into 1300 quadrats measuring 20m×20m; for each Dryobalanops species, the number and total basal area of trees 1cm in d.b.h. were compared among groups of quadrats with different site conditions. Because spatial distributions of both Dryobalanops and site-condition variables were aggregated, Monte-Carlo permutation tests were applied to analyze the relationships. Both single and multifactor statistical tests showed that the density and basal area distributions of the two species were significantly non-random in relation to soil texture and topographic variables. D.aromatica was significantly more abundant at higher elevations, in sandy soils, and on convex and steep slopes. In contrast, D.lanceolata preferred lower elevations and less sandy soils. In the study plot, there were very few sites (3 of 1150 quadrats tested) where the models of Hayashis method predicted the co-occurrence of the two species. These results suggest that between-species differences in habitat preferences are so large that they alone explain the spatially segregated distributions of these two species within the 52-ha study plot.  相似文献

Hypoxia has been shown to activate the pleiotropic cytokine TNF in the lung. TNF in turn, is known to induce pulmonary vasoconstriction. Additional effects of this cytokine in hypoxia mediated cardiopulmonary remodeling are poorly understood. To further evaluate the role of TNF in chronic hypoxia we exposed TNF null (TNF–/–) and wild-type mice to three weeks of hypobaric hypoxia (10% O2). Equivalent erythocytosis (Hematocrit increased by 40%) developed in both genetic backgrounds. In contrast, right ventricular systolic pressure increased in response to three weeks of hypoxia in the wild-type mice ( 75%), yet was unaltered in the TNF–/– mice. Concomitantly right ventricular hypertrophy was attenuated in the TNF–/– mice (35 ± 5% increase) when compared to wild-type mice (124 ± 6% increase p < 0.001, n 20). Interestingly in both strains the lung wet weights increased to a similar degree in response to hypoxia. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that TNF is an integral autocoid in chronic hypoxia mediated right ventricular hypertrophy. Moreover, additional components of cardiopulmonary remodeling may be regulated by TNF signaling as suggested by the negligible right ventricular systolic pressure response to hypoxia in the absence of TNF.  相似文献

Summary The subunit composition of glutenin was analysed by SDS-polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis using two varieties of contrasting pedigrees. Maris Widgeon, a variety of good bread-making quality, was shown to contain 2 glutenin subunits not present in Maris Ranger, a much higher yielding variety that is unsuitable for making bread. A third subunit was only found in Maris Ranger glutenin. To determine if any of these subunits are directly related to bread-making quality, 60 randomly-derived F2 progeny from a Maris Widgeon x Maris Ranger cross were analysed for bread-making quality and for glutenin subunit composition. A strong correlation was demonstrated between the presence of one of the two subunits inherited from Maris Widgeon, and quality. This subunit (termed subunit 1 glutenin) had an approx. mol. wt. of 145,000. It was also found in Maris Freeman, a bread-making variety selected from the same cross previously made in 1962. In further crosses involving Maris Widgeon or its descendants, more bread-making varieties have been produced in the last decade at the Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge and all but one have inherited glutenin subunit 1. The subunit has been traced back through Holdfast to White Fife, a Canadian hard spring wheat of excellent breadmaking quality. Some 67 varieties were screened for the presence of glutenin subunit 1 and it was found in 31% of them. Several unrelated varieties of good bread-making quality did not contain subunit 1 glutenin.  相似文献

Paddy levees form networks of narrow linear habitats and play various roles in cultural landscapes. Traditional landscapes on the west side of Lake Biwa consist of paddy field terraces and both stone and soil levees that have been maintained by paddy field management using local resources. Paddy levees in this study site are principally classified into five different types. Our study points out how differences in paddy levee structure as well as in management practices influence the plant species. Seventeen paddy levee transects were split into four habitat types based on their species components by TWINSPAN. Spatial characteristics and physical structures of paddy levees depended on natural conditions and human activities. The species–area curves of each levee type showed a clear distinction: the soil, stone and abandoned curves were steep, while the concrete and consolidated ones were gentle. The vegetation on consolidated levees was utterly different from the vegetation on traditional levee types from the aspect of species richness and species components. Soil type levees contained various woody plant species and included more diverse and indigenous plant species than abandoned type levees.  相似文献

Tree biodiversity data is presented for a 1-ha permanent study plot on a low slope position of the Kuala Belalong valley in Temburong District, Brunei, Borneo. This is the first study in the region to document the tree flora of a low slope. All trees 5cm at 1.3m were mapped, measurements of dbh and height taken, and identified to species and morpho-species level. The total and relative values of each family for density, diversity, dominance and Importance Value Indices were calculated. A total of 1062 stems were recorded on the plot (1019 live, 43 dead) with a total of 278 species representing 110 genera in 49 families. The most ecologically significant family as determined by the Family Importance Value (FIV) was Euphorbiaceae with a value of 40 and'the'most significant species, using the Importance Value (IV), was morpho-speciesFordia splendissima with an IV of 29. The total basal area of all living trees was 31.43m2. Forest structure was marked by a few tall (>45m) emergents, for example,Koompassia excelsa, Crypteronia griffithii and two species of the Dipterocarpaceae family, however, lower understorey and sub-canopy species dominated the plot with the average height of all individuals over the hectare being 11m.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the epiphyte biomass, measured both as chlorophyll a and as cell volume, and species composition were compared on Potamogeton richardsonii and on a similar plastic plant grown together in a shallow bay of Lake Memphremagog (46°06'N, 72°16W). Both substrates exhibited two periods of high biomass during the June to September growing season; one in June, when the community was dominated by loosely attached species with a strong planktonic component (up to 37%), and one in September, when the epiphytes were characterized by species tightly attached to the leaves. Although this seasonal trend was similar, the loosely and tightly attached communities were best developed on the natural and artificial plants, respectively. The diversity of the epiphytes was significantly higher on the natural than on the artificial leaves from July on. Both the diversity differences and differences in community structure appear to be the result of the summer accumulation of CaCO3 observed only on the upper leaf surfaces of the natural plants. Consequently, P. richardsonii appears to affect epiphyte development largely by its precipitation of CaCO3, with no evidence for either direct inhibition or stimulation of the epiphytes by the natural plants. The reduced epiphyte biomass on growing tips was no different from that on artificial plants of the same age and exposure and is attributable to an insufficient time for colonization rather than to inhibition by the macrophyte.Contribution No. 8, Lake Memphremagog Project, Limnology Research Group  相似文献
