With a new approach we assessed the relative contribution of stored and current carbon compounds to new shoot growth in alpine treeline conifers. Within a free air CO2 enrichment experiment at the alpine treeline in Switzerland, 13C-depleted fossil CO2 was used to trace new carbon in the two tree species Larix decidua L. and Pinus uncinata Ramond over two subsequent years. The deciduous L. decidua was found to supply new shoot growth (structural woody part) by 46% from storage. Surprisingly, the evergreen P. uncinata, assumed to use current-year photosynthates, also utilized a considerable fraction of storage (42%) for new wood growth. In contrast, the needles of P. uncinata were built up almost completely from current-year photosynthates. The isotopic composition of different wood carbon fractions revealed a similar relative allocation of current and stored assimilates to various carbon fractions. Elevated CO2 influenced the composition of woody tissue in a species-specific way, e.g. the water soluble fraction decreased in pine in 2001 but increased in larch in 2002 compared to ambient CO2. Heavy defoliation applied as an additional treatment factor in the second year of the experiment decreased the lipophilic fraction in current-year wood in both species compared to undefoliated trees. We conclude that storage may play an important role for new shoot growth in these treeline conifers and that altered carbon availability (elevated CO2, defoliation) results in significant changes in the relative amount of mobile carbon fractions in woody tissue. In particular, stored carbon seems to be of greater importance in the evergreen P. uncinata than has been previously thought.  相似文献

Cumulative ozone uptake (COU, mmol m−2) and O3 flux (FO3, nmol m−2 s−1) were related to physiological, morphological and biochemical characteristics of field-grown mature evergreen Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.], Cembran pine [Pinus cembra L.], and deciduous European larch [Larix decidua Mill.] trees at treeline. The threshold COU causing a statistically significant decline in photosynthetic capacity (Amax) ranged between 19.6 mmol m−2 in current-year needles of evergreen conifers and 22.0 6 mmol m−2 in short-shoot needles of deciduous L. decidua subjected to exposure periods of ≥84 and ≥43 days, respectively. The higher O3 sensitivity of deciduous L. decidua than of evergreen P abies and P. cembra was associated with differences in FO3 and specific leaf area (SLA), both being significantly higher in L. decidua. FO3 was 5.9 nmol m−2 s−1 in L. decidua and 2.7 nmol m−2 s−1 in evergreen conifers. Species-dependent differences were also related to detoxification capacity expressed through total surface area based concentrations of reduced ascorbate and α-tocopherol that both increased with SLA. Findings suggest that differences in O3 sensitivity between evergreen and deciduous conifers can be attributed to foliage type specific differences in SLA, the latter determining physiological and biochemical characteristics of the treeline conifers.  相似文献

We studied the effects of applying 50 kg(N) ha?1 year?1 of nitrogen (N) on needle photosynthesis, N allocation and nutrient content in the sun- and shade crowns of the hybrid larch F1 (Larix gmelinii var. japonica × L. kaempferi). The light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) was not significantly affected by N application or crown position, although the contents of N, P, K, and chlorophyll (Chl), and the maximum rates of carboxylation and electron transport were lower in needles of the shade crown than of the sun crown. This difference was mainly due to an increase in the intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) in the needles of the shade crown. Analysis of N allocation in photosynthetic systems revealed that more N was allocated to functions related to electron transport and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) regeneration in needles of the shade crown. N allocation in needles of the hybrid larch F1 was regulated mainly by the light conditions, rather than by N application  相似文献

The CO2 and H2O vapour exchange of single attached orange, Citrus sinensis (L.), leaves was measured under laboratory conditions using infrared gas analysis. Gaseous diffusive resistances were derived from measurements at a saturating irradiance and at a leaf temperature optimum for photosynthesis. Variation in leaf resistance (within the range 1.6 to 60 s cm-1) induced by moisture status, or by cyclic oscillations in stomatal aperture, was associated with changes in both photosynthesis and transpiration. At low leaf resistance (ri less than 10 s cm-1) the ratio of transpiration to photosynthesis declined with reduced stomatal aperture, indicating a tighter stomatal control over H2O vapour loss than over CO2 assimilation. At higher leaf resistance (ri greater than 10 s cm-1) changes in transpiration and photosynthesis were linearly related, but leaf resistance and mesophyll resistance were also positively correlated, so that strictly stomatal control of photosynthesis became more apparent than real. This evidence, combined with direct measurements of CO2 diffusive resistances (in a -O2 gas stream) emphasised the presence of a significant mesophyll resistance; i.e., an additional and rate limiting resistance to CO2 assimilation over and above that encountered by H2O vapour escaping from the leaf.  相似文献

Leaf responses to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (Ca) are central to models of forest CO2 exchange with the atmosphere and constrain the magnitude of the future carbon sink. Estimating the magnitude of primary productivity enhancement of forests in elevated Ca requires an understanding of how photosynthesis is regulated by diffusional and biochemical components and up‐scaled to entire canopies. To test the sensitivity of leaf photosynthesis and stomatal conductance to elevated Ca in time and space, we compiled a comprehensive dataset measured over 10 years for a temperate pine forest of Pinus taeda, but also including deciduous species, primarily Liquidambar styraciflua. We combined over one thousand controlled‐response curves of photosynthesis as a function of environmental drivers (light, air Ca and temperature) measured at canopy heights up to 20 m over 11 years (1996–2006) to generate parameterizations for leaf‐scale models for the Duke free‐air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment. The enhancement of leaf net photosynthesis (Anet) in P. taeda by elevated Ca of +200 μmol mol?1 was 67% for current‐year needles in the upper crown in summer conditions over 10 years. Photosynthetic enhancement of P. taeda at the leaf‐scale increased by two‐fold from the driest to wettest growing seasons. Current‐year pine foliage Anet was sensitive to temporal variation, whereas previous‐year foliage Anet was less responsive and overall showed less enhancement (+30%). Photosynthetic downregulation in overwintering upper canopy pine needles was small at average leaf N (Narea), but statistically significant. In contrast, co‐dominant and subcanopy L. styraciflua trees showed Anet enhancement of 62% and no AnetNarea adjustments. Various understory deciduous tree species showed an average Anet enhancement of 42%. Differences in photosynthetic responses between overwintering pine needles and subcanopy deciduous leaves suggest that increased Ca has the potential to enhance the mixed‐species composition of planted pine stands and, by extension, naturally regenerating pine‐dominated stands.  相似文献

Mesophyll cells and bundle sheath strands were isolated rapidly from leaves of the C4 species Digitaria pentzii Stent. (slenderstem digitgrass) by a chopping and differential filtration technique. Rates of CO2 fixation in the light by mesophyll and bundle sheath cells without added exogenous substrates were 6.3 and 54.2 micromoles of CO2 per milligram of chlorophyll per hour, respectively. The addition of pyruvate or phosphoenolpyruvate to the mesophyll cells increased the rates to 15.2 and 824.6 micromoles of CO2 per milligram of chlorophyll per hour, respectively. The addition of ribose 5-phosphate increased the rate for bundle sheath cells to 106.8 micromoles of CO2 per milligram of chlorophyll per hour. These rates are comparable to those reported for cells isolated by other methods. The Km(HCO3) for mesophyll cells was 0.9 mm; for bundle sheath cells it was 1.3 mm at low, and 40 mm at higher HCO3 concentrations. After 2 hours of photosynthesis by mesophyll cells in 14CO2 and phosphoenolpyruvate, 88% of the incorporated 14C was found in organic acids and 0.8% in carbohydrates; for bundle sheath cells incubated in ribose 5-phosphate and ATP, more than 58% of incorporated 14C was found in carbohydrates, mainly starch, and 32% in organic acids. These findings, together with the stimulation of CO2 fixation by phosphoenolpyruvate for mesophyll cells and by ribose 5-phosphate plus ATP for bundle sheath cells, and the location of phosphoenolpyruvate and ribulose bisphosphate carboxylases in mesophyll and bundle sheath cells, respectively, are in accord with the scheme of C4 photosynthesis which places the Calvin cycle in the bundle sheath and C4 acid formation in mesophyll cells.  相似文献

Photosynthetic traits of two-year-old Japanese larch seedlings (Larix kaempferi Carr.) grown at elevated CO2 concentrations were studied in relation to structural changes in the needles. Seedlings were grown at two CO2 concentrations, 360 (AC) and 720 (EC) mol mol–1 at high and low nutrient supply rates, high N (HN) and low N (LN). The photosynthetic capacity fell significantly in EC+LN, but increased significantly in EC+HN. Since the mesophyll surface area exposed to intercellular space per unit leaf area (Ames/A) is correlated with the photosynthetic rate, we measured Ames/A for larch needles growing in EC. Changes of Ames/A in both EC+HN and EC+LN were very similar to the changes in photosynthetic capacity. This suggests that the changes of Ames/A in EC probably caused the changes in the photosynthetic capacity. The changes of Ames/A in EC were attributed to changes in the mesophyll cell size and mesophyll cell number. The photosynthetic capacity in EC can be explained by taking morphological and structural adaptations into account as well as biochemical factors.  相似文献

Carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) were studied in evergreen and deciduous forest ecosystems in semi-arid Utah (Pinus contorta, Populus tremuloides, Acer negundo and Acer grandidentatum). Measurements were taken in four to five stands of each forest ecosystem differing in overstory leaf area index (LAI) during two consecutive growing seasons. The δ13Cleaf (and carbon isotope discrimination) of understory vegetation in the evergreen stands (LAI 1.5–2.2) did not differ among canopies with increasing LAI, whereas understory in the deciduous stands (LAI 1.5–4.5) exhibited strongly decreasing δ13Cleaf values (increasing carbon isotope discrimination) with increasing LAI. The δ13C values of needles and leaves at the top of the canopy were relatively constant over the entire LAI range, indicating no change in intrinsic water-use efficiency with overstory LAI. In all canopies, δ13Cleaf decreased with decreasing height above the forest floor, primarily due to physiological changes affecting c i/c a (> 60%) and to a minor extent due to δ13C of canopy air (< 40%). This intra-canopy depletion of δ13Cleaf was lowest in the open stand (1‰) and greatest in the denser stands (4.5‰). Although overstory δ13Cleaf did not change with canopy LAI, δ13C of soil organic carbon increased with increasing LAI in Pinus contorta and Populus tremuloides ecosystems. In addition, δ13C of decomposing organic carbon became increasingly enriched over time (by 1.7–2.9‰) for all deciduous and evergreen dry temperate forests. The δ13Ccanopy of CO2 in canopy air varied temporally and spatially in all forest stands. Vertical canopy gradients of δ13Ccanopy, and [CO2]canopy were larger in the deciduous Populus tremuloides than in the evergreen Pinu contorta stands of similar LAI. In a very wet and cool year, ecosystem discrimination (Δe) was similar for both deciduous Populus tremulodies (18.0 ± 0.7‰) and evergreen Pinus contorta (18.3 ± 0.9‰) stands. Gradients of δ13Ccanopy and [CO2]canopy were larger in denser Acer spp. stands than those in the open stand. However, 13C enrichment above and photosynthetic draw-down of [CO2]canopy below tropospheric baseline values were larger in the open than in the dense stands, due to the presence of a vigorous understory vegetation. Seasonal patterns of the relationship δ13Ccanopy versus 1/[CO2]canopy were strongly influenced by precipitation and air temperature during the growing season. Estimates of Δe for Acer spp. did not show a significant effect of stand structure, and averaged 16.8 ± 0.5‰ in 1933 and 17.4 ± 0.7‰ in 1994. However, Δe varied seasonally with small fluctuations for the open stand (2‰), but more pronounced changes for the dense stand (5‰). Received: 15 April 1996 / Accepted: 19 October 1996  相似文献

Summary Laboratory and field gas exchange measurements were made on C3 (Scirpus olneyi Gray) and C4 (Spartina patens (Ait.) Mahl., Distichlis spicata (L.) Green) species from an irregularly flooded tidal marsh on the Chesapeake Bay. Laboratory measurements were made on plants grown from root stocks that were transplanted to a greenhouse and grown under high light and high nutrient conditions. The two C4 species were similar in their laboratory gas exchange characteristics: both had higher net carbon exchange rates, higher mesophyll conductances, higher photosynthetic temperature optima and lower leaf conductances than the C3 species. The laboratory photosynthetic water use efficiency of the C4 species was approximately three times that of the C3 species.Field gas exchange responses of the above species were measured in situ a Chesapeake Bay tidal marsh. Despite differences in biological potential measured in the laboratory, all three species had similar in situ carbon exchange rates on a leaf area basis. On a dry weight basis, leaves of the two C4 species had about 1.4 times higher light saturated CO2 assimilation rates than the C3 species. Light saturation of CO2 exchange occurred at photosynthetic photon flux densities of 80 n Einstein cm-2s-1, compared with 160 n Einstein cm -2s-1 in the laboratory grown plants. Spartina patens and Scirpus olneyi had similar daily CO2 assimilation rates, but the daily transpiration rate of the C3 species was almost twice that of the C4 species. Spartina patens showed greater seasonal decrease in photosynthesis than Distichlis spicata and Scirpus olneyi. The two C4 grass species maintained higher mesophyll conductances and photosynthetic water use efficiencies than the C4 sedge.  相似文献

Observations that deciduous and evergreen conifers growing in Britain show similar annual growth increments, despite marked differences in short-term growth rates, led to a comparative study of seasonal photosynthetic capacity in established trees of four coniferous species with contrasting growth habits. The photo-synthetic data were compared with seasonal changes in environmental parameters and chloroplast ultrastructure. The maximum net photosynthetic rates (at 20°C) recorded for Larix leptolepis were higher than those for the evergreen conifers when expressed on a leaf weight basis but not when expressed per unit leaf area. The photosynthetic efficiency of new needles in the evergreen species showed an overall decline from just after needle maturity until just before budbreak in their second season, after which photosynthetic rates recovered temporarily, approaching previous maximum levels. There was no obvious correlation between seasonal photosynthetic efficiency (at 20°C) on the one hand, and daily air, and (30 cm) ground temperatures on the other, and there was no obvious winter suppression of evergreen photosynthetic rates. Evergreen needles showed starch loss and some membrane changes with the onset of winter, but there was no evidence for wintertime chloroplast clumping or membrane disruption.  相似文献

Abstract The pattern of photosynthetic carbon fixation by leaves of Amaranthus paniculatus L. (a C4 plant) and Oryza sativa L. (a C3 plant) varied with age. Younger leaves of A. paniculatus incorporated 14CO2 into malate and aspartate while senescent leaves fixed predominantly into phosphoglycerate (PGA) and sugar phosphates. Only developing leaves of O. sativa formed malate/aspartate whereas mature and senescent leaves produced PGA/sugar phosphates as the initial labelled products. Correspondingly the ratio of phosphoenolpyruvate/ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase activities was higher in younger leaves of A. paniculatus and developing leaves of O. sativa than in older leaves. However, pulse chase experiments revealed that the main donors of carbon to end products, irrespective of leaf stage, were C4 acids and PGA in A. paniculatus and O. sativa respectively. The results suggest that although an apparent change from initial β-carboxylation to RuBP carboxylation occurs during leaf ontogeny in both the plants, the overall leaf photosynthesis remains C4 or C3. The high rate of 14CO2 incorporation into PGA/sugar phosphates by senescent leaves of A. paniculatus is suggested to be partly due to the increased intercellular spaces in their mesophyll, allowing greater access of CO2 directly to RuBP carboxylase in the bundle sheath.  相似文献

Rates of photosynthesis vary with foliage age and typically decline from full-leaf expansion until senescence occurs. This age-related decline in photosynthesis is especially important in species that retain foliage for several years, yet it is not known whether the internal conductance to CO2 movement (g i) plays any role. More generally, g i has been measured in only a few conifers and has never been measured in leaves or needles older than 1 year. The effect of ageing on g i was investigated in Pinus pinaster, a species that retains needle for 4 or more years. Measurements were made in autumn when trees were not water limited and after leaf expansion was complete. Rates of net photosynthesis decreased with needle age, from 8 μmol m−2 s−1 in fully expanded current-year needles to 4.4 μmol m−2 s−1 in 3-year-old needles. The relative limitation due to internal conductance (0.24–0.35 out of 1) was in all cases larger than that due to stomatal conductance (0.13–0.19 out of 1). Internal conductance and stomatal conductance approximately scaled with rates of photosynthesis. Hence, there was no difference among year-classes in the relative limitations posed by internal and stomatal conductance or evidence that they cause the age-related decline in photosynthesis. There was little evidence that the age-related decline in photosynthesis was due to decreases in contents of N or Rubisco. The decrease in rates of photosynthesis from current-year to older needles was instead related to a twofold decrease in rates of photosynthesis per unit nitrogen and V cmax/Rubisco (i.e., in vivo specific activity).  相似文献

Needles of 20-year-old Scots pine trees (Pinus silvestris L.) were permitted to photoassimilate 14CO2 for 1 h on different dates during the growing season. The loss of radioactivity from current, 1-year-old, and 2-year-old needles was followed, and the translocation of photoassimilated 14CO2 from older needle age-classes to the elongating new needles studied. The effects of good mineral and water supply on translocation were also considered. In the spring, 1-year-old and 2-year-old needles accumulated 14C. These reserves, together with current photosynthate, were utilized when the trees started growing. The 1-year-old needles exported 14C to the current needles during the first weeks of elongation of the later, while no such translocation occurred from the 2-year-old needles. Removal of the 1-year-old needles resulted in translocation of assimilates from the 2-year-old needles to the current needles. The general pattern of translocation observed in the control trees was not changed when the trees were fertilized and irrigated. The new needles started to export assimilates in the middle of July when the photosynthetic rate per needle was comparable with that of the older age-classes. This occurred about 4 weeks after positive net photosynthesis was first measured for the current shoot. The current needles of trees with good nutrient and water supply seemed to become self-sufficient in photoassimilates earlier than the current needles of the control trees.  相似文献

Summary Tundra plant growth forms can generally be characterized as consisting predominantly of low-growing perennial grasses and sedges, perennial herbaceous forbs, dwarf deciduous shrubs, and dwarf evergreen shrubs. Gross aboveground carbon allocation, leaf growth, and photosynthesis pattern studies were initiated to develop a quantitative understanding of the functional importance of these particular tundra growth forms. Photosynthetic capacities of 13 species were determined under standardized exposure conditions using a14CO2 field system and ranged between 5 and 47 mg CO2·g dry wt-1·h-1. These results, in conjunction with detailed leaf growth determinations, support the generalization that species with an evergreen growth form have lower photosynthetic capacities than species with a perennial graminoid, forb, or deciduous shrub growth form. However, these low photosynthetic capacities in evergreen shrubs are associated with relatively extended leaf longevities. Conversely, deciduous shrub forms exhibited high photosynthetic capacities, but were offset by relatively short leaf longevity periods. The perennial grasses, sedges, and forbs showed patterns intermediate to these. As a result, it appears that among tundra species of different growth form, photosynthetic capacity is inversely related to leaf longevity.  相似文献

Summary Shade needles of hybrid larch (Larix decidua × leptolepis) had the same rates of photosynthesis as sun needles per dry weight and nitrogen, and a similar leaf conductance under conditions of light saturation at ambient CO2 (Amax). However, on an area basis, Amax and specific leaf weight were lower in shade than in sun needles. Stomata of sun needles limited CO2 uptake at light saturation by about 20%, but under natural conditions of light in the shade crown, shade needles operated in a range of saturating internal CO2 without stomatal limitation of CO2 uptake. In both needle types, stomata responded similarly to changes in light, but shade needles were more sensitive to changes in vapor pressure deficit than sun needles. Despite a high photosynthetic capacity, the ambient light conditions reduced the mean daily (in summer) and annual carbon gain of shade needles to less than 50% of that in sun needles. In sun needles, the transpiration per carbon gain was about 220 mol mol–1 on an annual basis. The carbon budget of branches was determined from the photosynthetic rate, the needle biomass and respiration, the latter of which was (per growth and on a carbon basis) 1.6 mol mol–1 year–1 in branch and stem wood. In shade branches carbon gains exceeded carbon costs (growth + respiration) by only a factor of 1.6 compared with 3.5 in sun branches. The carbon balance of sun branches was 5 times higher per needle biomass of a branch or 9 times higher on a branch length basis than shade branches. The shade foliage (including the shaded near-stem sun foliage) only contributed approximately 23% to the total annual carbon gain of the tree.  相似文献

Mesophyll protoplasts of pea required only 74.1 μM CO2 for maximal photosynthesis, unlike chloroplasts, which required up to 588 μM CO2. Such a markedly low requirement for CO2 could be because of an internal carbon source and/or a CO2 concentrating mechanism in mesophyll protoplasts. Ethoxyzolamide (EZA), an inhibitor of internal carbonic anhydrase (CA) suppressed photosynthesis by mesophyll protoplasts at low CO2 (7.41 μM) but had no significant effect at high CO2 (741 μM). However, acetazolamide, another inhibitor of CA, did not exert as much dramatic effect as EZA. Three photorespiratory inhibitors, aminoacetonitrile or glycine hydroxamate (GHA) or aminooxyacetate inhibited markedly photosynthesis at low CO2 but not at high CO2. Inhibitors of glycolysis or tricarboxylic acid cycle (NaF, sodium malonate) or phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (3,3‐dichloro‐2‐dihydroxy phosphinoyl‐methyl‐2‐propenoate) had no significant effect on photosynthesis. The CO2 requirement of protoplast photosynthesis and the sensitivity of photosynthesis to EZA were much higher at low oxygen (65 nmol ml?1) than that at normal oxygen (212 nmol ml?1). In contrast, the inhibitory effect of photorespiratory inhibitors on protoplast photosynthesis was similar in both normal and low oxygen medium. The marked elevation of glycine/serine ratio at low O2 or in presence of GHA confirmed the suppression of photorespiratory decarboxylation by GHA. While demonstrating interesting difference between the response of protoplasts and chloroplasts to CO2, we suggest that photorespiration could be a significant source of CO2 for photosynthesis in mesophyll protoplasts at limiting CO2 and at atmospheric levels of oxygen. Obviously, carbonic anhydrase is essential to concentrate or retain CO2 in mesophyll cells.  相似文献

Larches (Larix spp.), deciduous conifers, occur in the northern hemisphere in cold-temperate and boreal climates – an environment normally thought to favor evergreen tree species. We compare foliar carbon isotope discrimination (Δ), instantaneous water use efficiency, total foliar nitrogen concentration, and specific leaf area (for a subset of sites) between Larix spp. and co-occurring evergreen conifers at 20 sites throughout the natural range of larches. Except for Larix occidentalis in the xeric Intermountain West, USA, Δ is significantly (P < 0.05) greater for larches than co-occurring evergreen conifers at 77% of the sites, suggesting that larches use water less efficiently. At elevations greater than 3000 m, the Δ of Larix spp. and co-occurring conifers converge, suggesting that water is not the limiting resource. Foliar nitrogen concentration and specific leaf area are two ecophysiological characteristics that are positively correlated with high photosynthetic capacity. Foliar nitrogen concentration is significantly greater for larches than evergreen conifers at 88% of the sites and specific leaf area is approximately three times greater for larches than co-occurring conifers. Future studies should examine the potential effect that global warming may have on the distribution of larch forests because the water use efficiency of larches is commonly less than co-occurring evergreen conifers and the boreal and high-latitude environments are likely to experience the greatest climate warming. Immediate export in leaves of C3‐C4 intermediates were compared with their C3 and C4 relatives within the Panicum and Flaveria genera. At 35 Pa CO2, photosynthesis and export were highest in C4 species in each genera. Within the Panicum, photosynthesis and export in ‘type I’ C3‐C4 intermediates were greater than those in C3 species. However, ‘type I’ C3‐C4 intermediates exported a similar proportion of newly fixed 14C as did C4 species. Within the Flaveria, ‘type II’ C3‐C4 intermediate species had the lowest export rather than the C3 species. At ambient CO2, immediate export was strongly correlated with photosynthesis. However, at 90 Pa CO2, when photosynthesis and immediate export increased in all C3 and C3‐C4 intermediate species, proportionally less C was exported in all photosynthetic types than that at ambient CO2. All species accumulated starch and sugars at both CO2 levels. There was no correlation between immediate export and the pattern of 14C‐labelling into sugars and starch among the photosynthetic types within each genus. However, during CO2 enrichment, C4Panicum species accumulated sugars above the level of sugars and starch normally made at ambient CO2, whereas the C4Flaveria species accumulated only additional starch.  相似文献

Olive (Olea europea L) is one of the most valuable and widespread fruit trees in the Mediterranean area. To breed olive for resistance to salinity, an environmental constraint typical of the Mediterranean, is an important goal. The photosynthetic limitations associated with salt stress caused by irrigation with saline (200 mm ) water were assessed with simultaneous gas‐exchange and fluorescence field measurements in six olive cultivars. Cultivars were found to possess inherently different photosynthesis when non‐stressed. When exposed to salt stress, cultivars with inherently high photosynthesis showed the highest photosynthetic reductions. There was no relationship between salt accumulation and photosynthesis reduction in either young or old leaves. Thus photosynthetic sensitivity to salt did not depend on salt exclusion or compartmentalization in the old leaves of the olive cultivars investigated. Salt reduced the photochemical efficiency, but this reduction was also not associated with photosynthesis reduction. Salt caused a reduction of stomatal and mesophyll conductance, especially in cultivars with inherently high photosynthesis. Mesophyll conductance was generally strongly associated with photosynthesis, but not in salt‐stressed leaves with a mesophyll conductance higher than 50 mmol m?2 s?1. The combined reduction of stomatal and mesophyll conductances in salt‐stressed leaves increased the CO2 draw‐down between ambient air and the chloroplasts. The CO2 draw‐down was strongly associated with photosynthesis reduction of salt‐stressed leaves but also with the variable photosynthesis of controls. The relationship between photosynthesis and CO2 draw‐down remained unchanged in most of the cultivars, suggesting no or small changes in Rubisco activity of salt‐stressed leaves. The present results indicate that the low chloroplast CO2 concentration set by both low stomatal and mesophyll conductances were the main limitations of photosynthesis in salt‐stressed olive as well as in cultivars with inherently low photosynthesis. It is consequently suggested that, independently of the apparent sensitivity of photosynthesis to salt, this effect may be relieved if conductances to CO2 diffusion are restored.  相似文献

Photosynthesis rates of detached Panicum miliaceum leaves were measured, by either CO2 assimilation or oxygen evolution, over a wide range of CO2 concentrations before and after supplying the phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase inhibitor, 3,3-dichloro-2-(dihydroxyphosphinoyl-methyl)-propenoate (DCDP). At a concentration of CO2 near ambient, net photosynthesis was completely inhibited by DCDP, but could be largely restored by elevating the CO2 concentration to about 0.8% (v/v) and above. Inhibition of isolated PEP carboxylase by DCDP was not competitive with respect to HCO3, indicating that the recovery was not due to reversal of enzyme inhibition. The kinetics of 14C-incorporation from 14CO2 into early labeled products indicated that photosynthesis in DCDP-treated P. miliaceum leaves at 1% (v/v) CO2 occurs predominantly by direct CO2 fixation by ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase. From the photosynthesis rates of DCDP-treated leaves at elevated CO2 concentrations, permeability coefficients for CO2 flux into bundle sheath cells were determined for a range of C4 species. These values (6-21 micromoles per minute per milligram chlorophyll per millimolar, or 0.0016-0.0056 centimeter per second) were found to be about 100-fold lower than published values for mesophyll cells of C3 plants. These results support the concept that a CO2 permeability barrier exists to allow the development of high CO2 concentrations in bundle sheath cells during C4 photosynthesis.  相似文献
