Transposable elements (TEs) are selfish genetic elements whose self‐replication is contrasted by the host genome. In this context, host reproductive strategies are predicted to impact on both TEs load and activity. The presence and insertion distribution of the non‐LTR retrotransposon R2 was here studied in populations of the strictly bisexual Bacillus grandii maretimi and of the obligatory parthenogenetic Bacillus atticus atticus. Furthermore, data were also obtained from the offspring of selected B. a. atticus females. At the population level, the gonochoric B. g. maretimi showed a significantly higher R2 load than the obligatory parthenogenetic B. a. atticus. The comparison with bisexual and unisexual Bacillus rossius populations showed that their values were higher than those recorded for B. a. atticus and similar, or even higher, than those of B. g. maretimi. Consistently, an R2 load reduction is scored in B. a. atticus offspring even if with a great variance. On the whole, data here produced indicate that in the obligatory unisexual B. a. atticus R2 is active and that mechanisms of molecular turnover are effective. Furthermore, progeny analyses show that, at variance of the facultative parthenogenetic B. rossius, the R2 activity is held at a lower rate. Modeling parental‐offspring inheritance, suggests that in B. a. atticus recombination plays a major role in eliminating insertions rather than selection, as previously suggested for unisexual B. rossius progeny, even if in both cases a high variance is observed. In addition to this, mechanisms of R2 silencing or chances of clonal selection cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

Several genetic factors are assumed to influence developmental instability (DI). One is the level of heterozygosity, with higher levels often being associated with decreased DI; another is genetic incompatibility in hybrids, which in several cases has been shown to increase DI. The genus Bacillus includes species which have both amphigonic heterozygous reproducing populations and homozygous parthenogenetic reproducing populations (B. rossius rossius and B. r. redtenbacheri). Furthermore, Bacillus includes hybrid parthenogenetic species, which have very high levels of almost fixed heterozygosities (B. atticus, B. whitei, B. lynceorum). We investigated the phenotypic variance (σ2p) and the impact of hybridization and level of heterozygosity on DI in females from these populations and species of Bacillus. DI was estimated as fluctuating asymmetry (FA) for three bilateral traits: the labial palpus, the maxillary palpus and the antenna. For the labial palpus and maxillary palpus we found, in general, a lower level of DI in the amphigonic females compared with parthenogenetic counterparts from the same species and with parthenogenetic females from the three hybrid species. A higher DI of the antenna was found in the hybrid species when compared with both parthenogenetic and amphigonic populations of the nonhybrid species, suggesting that the genes controlling antenna development are located on the sex chromosomes. The development of the investigated bilateral characters in the hybrid species seemed to be affected more by factors relating to genetic incompatibilities as a consequence of hybridization than by the stabilizing force of increased heterozygosity. The allozymic characterization of several new Croatian, Greek, and Turkish samples thought to belong to different subspecies ofBacillus atticus or toatticus-like taxa is given. Several allelic combinations (zymotypes) were observed among both diploid and triploid samples; the occurrence of highly different levels of heterozygosity for the same locus among populations is also common. The biochemical-genetic features of the numerous zymotypes are interpreted on the basis of the recently assessed cytology of their parthenogenetic reproduction. Biochemical and meiotic features also allow one to suggest that both diploid and triploid cytotypes ofB. atticus are more likely interracial hybrids in origin. The new triploid Greek samples show only small genetic distances from the Turkish triploid and diploid ones; also, they do not show clear-cut morphological differences, so that all triploids and Turkish diploid samples are together referred to asB. a. carius. On the other hand, all Croatian, Greek, and Italian diploids appear to belong to the same electrophoretic cluster, biochemically differentiated at a subspecific level fromB. a. carius. This newly defined comprehensive group of diploid samples, which also morphologically show gradual patterns of variation, is referred to asB. a. atticus.  相似文献

In northwestern Sicily interspecific hybrid females between Bacillus rossius and B. grandii benazzii (Insecta, Phasmatodea) are sympatric with facultatively parthenogenetic demes of the former and bisexual populations of the latter. Preliminary observations suggested that hybrid females are maintained by hybridogenetic reproduction, not by current F1 hybrid production nor through parthenogenesis. Being hybridogens, a complex of hemiclonal lineages, we informally refer to them as B. rossius-grandii benazzii, according to Schultz's proposal. In this study B. rossius-g. benazzii females were crossed with males of B. g. benazzii, B. g. grandii, B. g. maretimi, and B. rossius. Allozyme analysis of the progeny showed that the great majority of them were actually produced by hybridogenesis with a hemiclonal inheritance of the maternal B. rossius genotype (Brm) and actual syngamy with a sperm from the fathering male, so that Brm-gbp, Brm-ggp, Brm-gmp, and Brm-rp offspring were obtained in the respective crosses. All-paternal progeny (androgenetics) were also produced (Bgbpgbp, Bgmpgmp, Brprp) and two gynogenetic descendants were observed. Cytological investigations on virgin eggs that failed to hatch revealed in most of them a haploid-diploid blocked blastoderm; this rudimentary parthenogenesis appears to be an important prerequisite for further evolution of this hybridogen. Reproductive modes of descendants were also analyzed; although Brm-gp hybrids are still able to reproduce by hybridogenesis, a progressive disruption of the hybridogenetic-androgenetic system takes place in synthetic B. rossius (Brm-rp, Brprp) and abundant thelytokous parthenogenetic offspring are obtained from females of androgenetic origin. The evolutionary role of these hybridogens appears to be linked to their shift towards parthenogenesis; this has apparently occurred in the southeastern Sicilian hybrid B. whitei (=B. rossius/g. grandii), which exhibits both hybridogenesis and parthenogenesis.  相似文献

Two new Sicilian stick-insects have been discovered within the genus Bacillus. Evidence concerning the subspecific differentiation of Bacillus grandii benazzii and the hybrid constitution of B. rossius-grandii benazzii by means of allozyme analysis is given, and is consistent with morphological and karyological data on the differentiation of these two north-west Sicilian morphs from south-eastern B. g. grandii and B. whitei. B. g. benazzii is more polymorphic than B. g. grandii and B. rossius-g. benazzii embodies its genetic variability, thus differing sharply from the south-eastern parallel hybrid B. whitei ( = B. rossius × B. g. grandii). Reproductive mechanisms also appear to be different in the two interspecific hybrids, involving parthenogenesis in the latter and hybridogenesis in the former. Finally, the phyletic relationships among all Sicilian Bacillus taxa are summarized in a revised scheme, which also takes into account new evidence that B. atticus has contributed to hybrid constitution of the triploid B. lynceorum.  相似文献

The sexually reproducing stick insects Bacillus rossius and B. grandii are sharply differentiated in terms of allozyme gene alleles; B. atticus is a polyclonal automictic parthenogen sister to B. grandii grandii. Although well differentiated for coding genes, these hybridize to produce diploid (B. whitei=rossius/grandii) or triploid (B. lynceorum=rossius/grandii/atticus) clonal forms which reproduce apomictically. Allozyme analyses of unisexual Bacillus clearly establish their relationships from bisexual ancestor species as does the existence in all of them of several clones (especially in B. atticus) whose egg maturation allows regular recombination to occur. Bacillus taxa share the Bag320 satellite DNA family within different reproductive frameworks, allowing satellite variant homogenization to be uncoupled from fixation. The nested analysis of monomers reveals different patterns of sequence diversity: sexual reproduction includes both homogenization and variant fixation, whereas the slowing of molecular turnover processes and the absence of syngamy in the parthenogens realizes a similar range of sequence diversity at the level of the individual and supra‐individual, but with no fixation. On the other hand, the actual values of sequence diversity appear mostly linked to species traits – range size, copy number of repeats, number of hybrid crosses – and possibly transposon activity, rather than to the reproductive mode. In addition, the mitochondrial genome reveals a comparable level of cox2 sequence variability in sexual and parthenogenetic taxa, thus adding to clonal variability. From Bacillus and other stick insect complexes, an overall picture of genomic diversification of parthenogens is therefore beginning to emerge. To define those animals that reproduce by non‐canonical sexual modes (i.e. parthenogenesis, hybridogenesis), but make use of egg and meiotic mechanisms, the term meta‐sexual is proposed. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. The present article extends our previous work on the phylogenetic history of Microtus (Terricola) thomasi, analysing cytochrome b, 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA and the control region in 65 Greek populations. The analysis revealed three clades: one grouping the populations from Peloponnisos (Southern Greece); the second, the populations from Agios (Ag.) Stefanos and Evvoia island (Central East Greece); and the third, all the remaining populations with no geographical substructure. Genetic distances were low for most populations, with only the populations of Evvoia and Ag. Stefanos being substantially distant. Thus, although this species has a recent colonization history and probably descends from a highly polymorphic ancestor, a monophyletic and highly differentiated lineage is formed in Greece and is distributed in Ag. Stefanos and Evvoia. Molecular differentiation, distinct geographical distribution and restriction of gene flow between this lineage and the rest of the Greek populations provide evidence for its probable subspecific status, Microtus (Tericola) thomasi atticus. A possible mechanism leading the differentiation process of the proposed subspecies is suggested, based on the displacement of this species in central Greece by its congeneric, probably better‐fitted Microtus (Microtus) guentheri and the subsequent separation of Ag. The present investigation investigated the genetic structure of a monophyletic group of endemic species belonging to the Genista ephedroides species group: G. bocchierii, G. cilentina, G. demarcoi, G. dorycnifolia, G. ephedroides, G. gasparrinii, G. insularis, G. numidica, G. tyrrhena subsp. tyrrhena, G. tyrrhena subsp. pontiana and G. valsecchiae, all distributed in the western Mediterranean. Using seven plastid microsatellites, 16 populations (288 individuals) were screened. Haplotype fixation was observed in particular for most of the Tyrrhenian taxa (i.e. G. bocchierii, G. cilentina, G. demarcoi, G. ephedroides, G. gasparrinii, G. insularis, G. tyrrhena subsp. tyrrhena and G. valsecchiae). However, although genetic diversity within populations was low [(hS = 0.132 (± 0.056)], a high level of total plastid DNA diversity [hT = 0.866 (± 0.042)] was detected, and analysis of molecular variance indicated that variation is almost exclusively expressed among populations (95.25%). The plastid microsatellites identify two groups of taxa, one including Sardinian taxa and populations of G. tyrrhena subsp. pontiana and the other including two subgroups, one of which includes Sicilian/Aeolian elements and the other with G. numidica/G. cilentina and G. dorycnifolia. Results allow us to consider G. cilentina as originating by recent anthropogenic dispersal and G. tyrrhena subsp. pontiana as a possible stabilized hybrid between local plants and members of the Sardinian group contributing the maternal lineage. Bone-marrow karyotypes of 68 specimens of the subterranean octodontid rodent genus Ctenomys from 16 different populations of north east Argentina and one from Paraguay have been studied. A surprising variety of chromosome numbers was found, ranging from 2n=42 to 2n=70. Some of the karyomorphs are clearly assigned to named species by topotypy: C. conoveris 2n=50, FN=56; C. argentinus, 2n=44, FN=54; C. perrensi, 2n=50, FN=84; C. dorbignyi, 2n=70, FN=84; C. roigi, 2n=48, FN=80; C. yolandae, 2n=50, FN=78. Four populations of Corrientes Province similar in morphology to C. perrensi were found to be polymorphic and polytypic; they maintain the same FN=84, but diploid numbers increase from 2n=54 to 2n=58 from SW to the NE, thus suggesting Robertsonian rearrangements. In the middle of this cline, a stable karyomorph of 2n=62, FN=84 was found in two different populations, suggesting to belong to an undescribed species. Another karyomorph of 2n=42, FN=76 found in Curuzú Laurel, Corrientes, may also prove to represent another undescribed species. One karyomorph of 2n=52, FN=74, and another of 2n=56, FN=78 from Paraná and Ubajaý (Entre Ríos Province, Argentina) respectively are close to C. rionegrensis. The relationships among these karyomorphs is considered in light of data on sperm morphology. The hypothesis is advanced that karyotypic rearrangements among the FN=84 group may be the result of Robertsonian repatterning from a 2n=70 original widespread form. Fixation of chromosomal variants is correlated with patchy distribution and small size of unstable demes, and may or may not have resulted in reproductive isolation.  相似文献

Aims Because rhinolophids have been hypothesized to use echolocation call frequency to recognize conspecifics, sympatric species calling at similar frequencies should be subject to acoustic character displacement, i.e. a drift in frequency values to minimize the risk of misidentification of conspecifics. However, it has been proposed that insufficient geographical separation between populations in sympatry and allopatry may counter the establishment of frequency differences by character displacement. Here we tested the hypothesis that insular populations should exhibit acoustic divergence, and this should be revealed by comparing call frequencies with those observed in mainland, allopatric populations of conspecifics. We also tested whether the evolutionary pressure towards acoustic divergence should be especially strong at sites where rhinolophid species emitting similar call frequencies roost together in order to minimize interspecific frequency overlap. Location Sardinia and southern Italy (Campania, Lazio, Abruzzo). Methods Time‐expanded echolocation calls and body size were recorded from Sardinian populations of Rhinolophus mehelyi Matschie, Rhinolophus hipposideros (Bechstein) and Rhinolophus euryale Blasius. Both call frequencies and forearm length of insular R. hipposideros and R. euryale were compared with those of populations from mainland areas of Italy where R. mehelyi is absent, to explore the hypothesis that the presence of the latter species (which calls at frequency values intermediate between the other two) may determine acoustic divergence in the other species. For Sardinian R. mehelyi and R. euryale, we also carried out intraspecific comparisons of call frequencies between bats from monospecific colonies and those from mixed colonies. Results As hypothesized, Sardinian R. hipposideros and R. euryale called at frequencies higher and lower, respectively, than in the peninsula. In this way, overlap with R. mehelyi is avoided. Body size showed no difference between insular and peninsular populations, i.e. frequency differences are not a by‐product of difference in body size determined by insularity. Frequency values in Sardinian R. euryale from monospecific colonies did not differ from those of bats roosting together with R. mehelyi. However, R. mehelyi showed frequency values significantly higher when associated with R. euryale, possibly to minimize the risk of species misrecognition. Main conclusions At least under geographical isolation, character displacement may be a causal mechanism for shifts in call frequency of sympatric rhinolophids. Species recognition and facilitation of intraspecific communication (with possible implications for mate recognition) constitute the best candidate factors for the phenomenon we observed.  相似文献

Studies of the level and the structure of the genetic diversity of local varieties of Phaseolus vulgaris are of fundamental importance, both for the management of genetic resources and to improve our understanding of the pathways of dissemination and the evolution of this species in Europe. We have here characterized 73 local bean populations from Sardinia (Italy) using seed traits and molecular markers (phaseolins, nuSSRs and cpSSRs). American landraces and commercial varieties were also included for comparison. We see that: (a) the Sardinian material is distinct from the commercial varieties considered; (b) the variation in the seed traits is high and it mostly occurs among populations (95%); (c) compared to the American sample and the commercial varieties, the Sardinian collection has a low level of diversity; (d) the majority (>95%) of the Sardinian individuals belong to the Andean gene pool; (e) the Sardinian material shows a strong genetic structure, both for cpSSRs and nuSSRs; (f) the nuSSRs and cpSSRs concur in differentiating between gene pools, but a lack of congruence between nuclear and chloroplast has been observed within gene pools; and (g) there are three putative hybrids between the Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools. Despite the relatively low level of diversity, which is probably due to a strong founder effect, the Sardinian landraces are worth being conserved and studied further because of their distinctiveness and because hybridization within and between the gene pools could generate variation that will be useful for breeding. The Segregation Distortion (SD) phenomenon is a typical case of non-Mendelian segregation in Drosophila melanogaster, due to the dysfunction of sperm bearing a non-SD homologous chromosome. In nature, several factors involved in the expression of the SD phenomenon have been described; among these, a genetic modifier carried by chromosome 3, which enhances the distortion effect of the SD chromosomes. The analysis of natural Sardinian populations, carried out in order to evaluate the presence of chromosome 3 bearing these enhancer factors, has enabled us to ascertain that (a) also in these populations chromosomes 3 with enhancer factors are present, although with frequencies lower than those previously reported in other publications; (b) among these enhancer chromosomes 3, some increase the k of certain chromosomes 2 from values of chromosomes considered non-distorting (k0.66) to values typical of SD chromosomes. The data obtained also allow us to put forward some considerations regarding the dynamics of the SD phenomenon in Sardinian populations, where the frequency of SD chromosomes is fairly elevated.  相似文献

The endemic Sardinian chalk hill blue butterfly, Polyommatus coridon gennargenti, is considered vulnerable to extinction because of its low genetic variation and restricted distribution. The species also has a fragmented distribution, which follows the patchy distribution pattern of its larval host-plant. A preliminary investigation of the population structure of P. coridon gennargenti was carried out on a small network of four local populations by means of capture–recapture methods. Estimated population sizes and movement rates among the four adjacent local populations suggest that this taxon has a metapopulation structure composed of loosely connected small local populations. Natural fragmentation, isolation, and traditional land use contribute to the vulnerability of P. coridon gennargenti to extinction. Low effective population sizes and restricted movement between habitat patches lead to inbreeding and an increased vulnerability to extinction of this island population.  相似文献

Coccinella septempunctata L., the seven spot ladybird is widely distributed across the Paleartic region. Based on a few morphological characteristics and geographical origin, some populations are recognized as distinct species, e.g., the North African Coccinella algerica Ková? and Japanese Coccinella brucki Mulsant later considered to be a subspecies –C. septempunctata brucki. The objective of this study is to discuss the taxonomic status of the seven spot ladybird, in particular whether it is a complex of species or the same species throughout the Paleartic region. The relationship between populations was clarified by using a combination of molecular and limited morphometric data and assessing potential reproductive barriers by means of cross breeding. Although there is considerable variation in the size of the spots on the elytra, the results of this study confirm that all studied populations belong to the same species.  相似文献

Four Alectoris species inhabit the Mediterranean area, where they represent important gamebirds subject to human manipulations. The Sardinian partridge is peculiar in Europe, in that it belongs to the African species Alectoris barbara. Nevertheless, no comprehensive study has as yet investigated its genetic status as regards both the extant levels of genetic diversity and the possible contamination due to introgressive hybridization with other Mediterranean species. For the purposes of this study, we analyzed 65 samples of Sardinian partridges, 40 of which came from the wild population and 25 from captive stocks. No one of them showed a mtDNA polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism haplotype assigned to another species than A. barbara, thus, ruling out a possible introgression in the maternal line. In addition, we compared these samples with 94 partridges from other circum-Mediterranean populations using a set of eight chicken (Gallus gallus) microsatellites. A low level of genetic variation was observed in the Sardinian population (H E = 0.310; k AR = 2.69), comparable only to that observed in the Sicilian rock partridge (A. graeca). The comparison with the Tunisian population showed that its present genetic composition is consistent with a historical introduction from North Africa, showing possible effects of a post-introductional genetic drift. Bayesian tests assigned all but one individuals with >90% probability to A. barbara, thus, providing evidence that no or only a few exotic Alectoris genes have introgressed into Sardinian partridges.  相似文献

We investigate the probability of fixation of a chromosome rearrangement in a subdivided population, concentrating on the limit where migration is so large relative to selection (m ? s) that the population can be thought of as being continuously distributed. We study two demes, and one- and two-dimensional populations. For two demes, the probability of fixation in the limit of high migration approximates that of a population with twice the size of a single deme: migration therefore greatly reduces the fixation probability. However, this behavior does not extend to a large array of demes. Then, the fixation probability depends primarily on neighborhood size (Nb), and may be appreciable even with strong selection and free gene flow (≈exp(-B ≈ Nbs) in one dimension, ≈exp(-B ≈ Nb) in two dimensions). Our results are close to those for the more tractable case of a polygenic character under disruptive selection.  相似文献

A compilation of the known distribution of Boophilus ticks in Africa and Latin America is presented, together with details on climate preferences. B. annulatus is recorded mainly in the western part of a strip from the equator to parallel 20° N. It associates with woodlands and forests (lowland rain forest and secondary grassland). This species is also present in the Mediterranean region, associated to woodland and open areas. B. decoloratus extends southern to parallel 20° N, in woodland with montane vegetation and Zambezian miombo; some records have been collected in the highveld grassland. B. geigyi is mainly collected in the western range of a stripe extending between parallels 5° N and 18° N, associated with Sudanian woodland, lowland rain forest with secondary grassland and woodland. Confirmed records of microplus in Africa are restricted to Malagasy region and south and eastern Africa, being predominant in the Zambezian miombo, deciduous forest with secondary grassland, and woodland. In Latin America, microplus is abundant in the Mesoamerican corridor to Venezuela and Colombia, and southern in Brazil and Argentina. The tick is mainly associated to the biomes of Chaco and Pampas in Argentina, the North-central moist Andes, the Atlantic forest (southern range) and the moist Meso-American vegetation (northern range). Most collections of B. annulatus and B. geigyi came from areas where winter minimum temperature is above 15 °C, maximum temperatures remain between 33 and 36 °C and maximum rainfall is recorded between June and September. B. decoloratus and African B. microplus are recorded in sites with low temperatures in May–September. Minimum temperature requirements are similar for both B. decoloratus and African B. microplus, and both are around 4 °C less than the value recorded for collections of Latin-American B. microplus. The rainfall pattern observed for decoloratus shows a minimum in May and June. The requirements of total rainfall are highest for B. microplus in Latin America, while records of African B. microplus are concentrated in areas of low rainfall between May and October, and high rainfall between November and March (low rainfall in the same period for B. decoloratus). Statistical analysis revealed the existence of populations (demes) with ecologically different requirements within each tick species. Both B. annulatus and B. decoloratus showed many different demes clearly associated to defined areas. The collections of Latin American B. microplus are very homogeneous according climate preferences and well separated from the African counterpart.  相似文献

Laboratory crosses among wild caught individuals of the chromosomal races “atticus” and “thomasi”, were performed to analyze the degree of interracial reproductive isolation. The fertility of the studied specimens was evaluated by taking into consideration the reproductive success, the litter size and performing comparative histological examination of the testicular material. All studied populations were submitted to classical cytogenetic and mitochondrial analysis (cytochrome b gene), providing new evidences to the potential phylogenetic relations and taxonomical status of the two chromosomal races. The previously described “atticus” populations are divided in two genetically distinct, geographically and reproductively isolated lineages (2.9% total and 2.4% net divergence), which probably derived from different glacial refugia of Southern Greece. Here, we suggest that the lineage, consisting of the populations from Attiki and Evia Island, should be distinguished as a valid species, named Microtus atticus, including the two chromosomal races “atticus” and “evia”. On the contrary, the ex-“atticus” populations from North Peloponnesus belong to the same mitochondrial lineage with the other Microtus thomasi populations and should be considered as a chromosomal polymorphism inside the chromosomal race “thomasi”.  相似文献

Genetic variation among populations of chewing lice (Geomydoecus actuosi) was examined in relation to chromosomal and electrophoretic variation among populations of their hosts (Thomomys bottae) at a contact zone. Louse demes were characterized by low levels of genetic heterozygosity (H? = 0.039) that may result from founder effects during primary infestation of hosts, compounded by seasonal reductions in louse population size. Louse populations sampled from different hosts showed high levels of genetic structuring both within and among host localities. Microgeographic differentiation of louse populations is high (mean FST = 0.092) suggesting that properties of this host–parasite system promote differentiation of louse populations living on different individual hosts. Among-population differentiation in lice (FST = 0.240) was similar to that measured among host populations (FST = 0.236), suggesting a close association between gene flow in pocket gophers and gene flow in their lice.  相似文献

Geographic variability and genetic interactions in the contact zone between the fire-bellied toads, Bombina bombina and B. variegata, were studied using analysis of morphological and genetic variation in sixteen samples from the Slovak Karst and Aggtelek Karst regions. Genotype frequencies at four marker loci (Ldh-1, Mdh-1, Adk, Hem) demonstrate the existence of a hybrid zone with highly variable population structures. While some samples appear to represent panmictic hybrid populations, other samples are very heterogeneous. Pure individuals of both species occurred together with hybrids at one site. Habitat segregation among genetically differentiated demes probably causes this heterogeneity of population structures. Increased frequencies of the allele Ldh-1M, which is present in low proportion in B. bombina south of the contact zone, were found in some hybrid populations.  相似文献
