Sabellastarte Krøyer, 1856 (Sabellidae), a morphologically homogeneous group distributed in warm and temperate coasts of the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean Sea, is characterized by the presence of a unique combination of features. To date, the genus comprises eight species, but morphological characters traditionally used in diagnostics have shown intra-specific variability, making species boundaries and distributions unclear. The present study constitutes the first attempt to test the monophyly of Sabellastarte and its relationships to other sabellid genera by combining molecular (COI and 16S) and morphological data. Results include placement of a clade containing Stylomma, Sabella, Branchiomma and Bispira as the sister group to Sabellastarte. Phylogenetic analyses and genetic divergence among specimens from several localities around the world indicate the presence of at least six lineages within Sabellastarte. In the context of a discussion of species boundaries and diagnostic features, the distribution of some of those lineages can be explained by the presence of cryptic species and potential introductions.  相似文献

The question as to why some communities are more invasible than others has pro-found implications for conservation biology and land management. The theoretical issues involved go right to the heart of our understanding of species coexistence and community assembly. The experiment reported here indicates that for productive, small-scale grassland plots, species identity matters more than species richness in determining both the number of invading species and the total biomass of invasives.  相似文献

Holly leaf‐miners on two continents: what makes an outbreak species?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
1. Some herbivore species periodically undergo damaging, high‐density outbreak phases followed by less damaging low‐density phases. Others maintain steady, low to moderate density levels that do little damage to their hosts. 2. Two closely related holly leaf‐miner species were compared that share many ecological traits and have very similar life cycles, but only one of which exhibits outbreaks. Phytomyza ilicicola in the eastern U.S.A. varied widely in mortality and infestation levels, reaching local densities of over 10 mines per leaf. In contrast, Phytomyza ilicis in the U.K. showed low infestation and high mortality at all sites. Using data from the literature and from field studies, the factors responsible for these contrasting dynamics were sought. 3. Phytomyza ilicicola oviposits into the leaf lamina, and experiences weak larval competition only at high densities. Phytomyza ilicis oviposits into the leaf midrib, which leads to high mortality of young larvae before mine formation. Multiply mined leaves were therefore very common in P. ilicicola but rare in P. ilicis. 4. Differences in the parasitoid complexes of the two systems accounted for further differences in survival to adulthood. The main (larval) parasitoid, which was found to impose high, density‐dependent mortality on P. ilicis, is missing on P. ilicicola. It is replaced by an egg–pupal parasitoid, which varies in its impact at differe~t sites. Multiple emergence of adults from multiply mined leaves is therefore widespread in P. ilicicola but does not occur in P. ilicis. 5. The differences in oviposition behaviour and in the parasitoid complexes are likely to allow P. ilicicola to outbreak when habitat conditions are favourable, while P. ilicis is always tightly regulated.  相似文献

Acanthocephalans of the globally distributed genus Pomphorhynchus have been intensively studied during the past decades. In Europe, Pomphorhynchus species have shown a certain degree of variability in their morphological characteristics and behavior. Nowadays two different Pomphorhynchus species, namely P. laevis and P. tereticollis, have been described for different waterbodies in Western and Central Europe. However, until now it appears that both species do not co-occur at the same time in the same habitat. We assume that due to their very similar morphology some of the individuals that were identified based on their morphological characteristics as either of the two species might have been misidentified in previous studies. To avoid this possible source of error, we used molecular marker (ITS 1, COX genes) to identify Pomphorhynchus individuals from European eels that were sampled within a time period of 12 years from the Rhine River to elucidate the distribution of the two species in Western and Central Europe. Our results together with a re-examination of former studies provide evidence that P. laevis might have been introduced together with potential host species (intermediate, paratenic, and/or definitive) from the Ponto-Caspian region, and that it outcompeted and repelled the endemic P. tereticollis from the mainstream of the river. Our results also provide first evidence on the former coexistence of both Pomphorhynchus species in the river Rhine.  相似文献

Explanations of the pattern of species have traditionally relied on small-scale, local processes occurring in ecological time. Differences in species richness have associated with different mechanisms avoiding competition, such as spatiotemporal heterogeneity (weaker competitors may find a more favourable place or time) or environmental stress (competition is assumed to be less intensive under difficult conditions). More recently, large-scale process have been taken into account, raising such questions as: which plant species may potentially grow in a certain community? Are evolutionary processes and species dispersal responsible for the differences between communities? The species-pool theory attempts to answer these general questions, and information about species pools is needed for the design of experiments where the number of species in a community is manipulated.  相似文献

Where possible, automation has been a common response of humankind to many activities that have to be repeated numerous times. The routine identification of specimens of previously described species has many of the characteristics of other activities that have been automated, and poses a major constraint on studies in many areas of both pure and applied biology. In this paper, we consider some of the reasons why automated species identification has not become widely employed, and whether it is a realistic option, addressing the notions that it is too difficult, too threatening, too different or too costly. Although recognizing that there are some very real technical obstacles yet to be overcome, we argue that progress in the development of automated species identification is extremely encouraging that such an approach has the potential to make a valuable contribution to reducing the burden of routine identifications. Vision and enterprise are perhaps more limiting at present than practical constraints on what might possibly be achieved.  相似文献

In view of the recent debate on the future of invasion biology, we argue that species could be regarded as invasive only when after adaptation in non-native habitats they reach yet another fitness maximum. We suggest that invasion biologists need to unambiguously clarify what constitutes being “invasive” to refute those who call for an end to invasion biology.  相似文献

Spawning marine invertebrates are excellent models for studying fertilization and reproductive isolating mechanisms. To identify variation in the major steps in sea urchin gamete recognition, we studied sperm activation in three closely related sympatric Strongylocentrotus species. Sperm undergo acrosomal exocytosis upon contact with sulfated polysaccharides in the egg-jelly coat. This acrosome reaction exposes the protein bindin and is therefore a precondition for sperm binding to the egg. We found that sulfated carbohydrates from egg jelly induce the acrosome reaction species specifically in S. droebachiensis and S. pallidus. There appear to be no other significant barriers to interspecific fertilization between these two species. Other species pairs in the same genus acrosome react nonspecifically to egg jelly but exhibit species-specific sperm binding. We thus show that different cell-cell communication systems mediate mate recognition among very closely related species. By comparing sperm reactions to egg-jelly compounds from different species and genera, we identify the major structural feature of the polysaccharides required for the specific recognition by sperm: the position of the glycosidic bond of the sulfated alpha-L-fucans. We present here one of the few examples of highly specific pure-carbohydrate signal transduction. In this system, a structural change in a polysaccharide has far-reaching ecological and evolutionary consequences.  相似文献

The loss of a species from an ecological community can trigger a cascade of secondary extinctions. The probability of secondary extinction to take place and the number of secondary extinctions are likely to depend on the characteristics of the species that is lost--the strength of its interactions with other species--as well as on the distribution of interaction strengths in the whole community. Analysing the effects of species loss in model communities we found that removal of the following species categories triggered, on average, the largest number of secondary extinctions: (a) rare species interacting strongly with many consumers, (b) abundant basal species interacting weakly with their consumers and (c) abundant intermediate species interacting strongly with many resources. We also found that the keystone status of a species with given characteristics was context dependent, that is, dependent on the structure of the community where it was embedded. Species vulnerable to secondary extinctions were mainly species interacting weakly with their resources and species interacting strongly with their consumers.  相似文献

Question: Do regional species pools, landscape isolation or on‐site constraints cause plants from different guilds to vary in their ability to colonize restored wetlands? Location: Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota, USA. Methods: Floristic surveys of 41 restored wetlands were made three and 12 years after reflooding to determine changes in local species pools for eight plant guilds. The effect of landscape isolation on colonization efficiency was evaluated for each guild by plotting local species pools against distance to nearby natural wetlands, and the relative importance of dispersal vs. on‐site constraints in limiting colonization was explored by comparing the local species pools of restored and natural wetlands within the region. Results: Of the 517 wetland plant taxa occurring in the region, 50% have established within 12 years. The proportion of the regional species pool represented in local species pools differed among guilds, with sedge‐meadow perennials, emergent perennials and floating/submersed aquatics least represented (33‐36%) and annual guilds most represented (74‐94%). Colonization‐to‐extinction ratios suggest that floating/submersed aquatics have already reached a species equilibrium while sedge‐meadow and emergent perennials are still accumulating species. Increasing distance to nearest wetlands decreased the proportion of the regional species pool present in local pools for all guilds except native annuals and woody plants. The maximum proportion predicted, assuming no distance constraint, was comparable to the lowest‐diversity natural wetlands for most perennial guilds, and also lower than what was achieved in a planted, weeded restoration. Conclusions: A biotic constraints seem to limit the colonization of floating/submersed aquatics into natural or restored wetlands, whereas all other guilds are potentially constrained by dispersal or biotic factors (i.e. competition from invasive species). Using species pools to evaluate restoration progress revealed that immigration potential varies considerably among guilds, that local species richness does not necessarily correspond to immigration limitations, and that some guilds (e.g. sedge‐meadow perennials) will likely benefit more than others from being planted at restoration sites.  相似文献

The cushion–star Parvulastra exigua (Lamarck, 1816) is a widely distributed member of the temperate intertidal fauna in the southern hemisphere. In South Africa, it occurs in sympatry with the endemic Parvulastra dyscrita (Clark, 1923), the two species being differentiated predominantly by gonopore placement. Several recent studies have suggested that there may be additional cryptic species within the Parvulastra exigua complex in South Africa, based variously on color morphology, genetic evidence and the differential placement of the gonopores. This paper attempts to resolve whether one or more species are represented within Parvulastra exigua. A total of 346 Parvulastra exigua and 8 Parvulastra dyscrita were collected from sites on the west and south–west coasts of South Africa; morphological, anatomical and genetic analyses were performed to determine whether cryptic species and/or Parvulastra exigua specimens with aboral gonopores were present. Results show that neither cryptic species nor Parvulastra exigua specimens with aboral gonopores occur at these sites. This study thus refutes previous claims of the existence of aboral gonopores in South African Parvulastra exigua, and suggests that a single species is represented. The distinction between Parvulastra exigua and Parvulastra dyscrita is also confirmed, and features separating these two species are clarified and documented.  相似文献

The paper provides the first estimate of the role of abiotic and anthropogenic variables driving both alien plant species richness and composition covering the whole region of the European Alps. To establish and spread in a new area, alien plants must be able to tolerate the prevailing climatic conditions. We therefore tested the hypothesis that climatic requirements modified by bioclimatic origin and elevational distribution influence the distribution of alien plants in the Alps. Despite most alien plant species showing a relatively restricted distribution in the Alps, some regions, however, were already more strongly invaded. Most of these species were adapted to warmer conditions, probably constrained by climatic factors. Environmental heterogeneity was the most important predictor of alien plant species richness, followed by anthropogenic disturbance. Due to the political/artificial delineation of the administrative districts in the Alps (i.e., ignoring ecological conditions) we did not find a direct influence of climatic constraints on alien distribution. Anyway, northern Holarctic alien species showed a broader climatic tolerance and the capability to grow across a wide environmental range. Our results also reveal a strong influence of human pressure on warmer tropical species, despite their low adaptability to anthropogenic habitats. To this aim, managers would profit from early warnings to prevent future invasions. Considering bioclimatic origin, our study can aid in identifying potentially invasive species in a more regional setting.  相似文献

Recent evidence linking intracellular reactive oxygen species to cell survival and/or proliferation signals has resulted in a paradigm shift from the age-old dogma implicating reactive oxygen species exclusively in cell damage and death. It is now accepted that reactive oxygen species play important roles in normal physiological states and that depending on the species involved the effect could be highly varied. In this regard, the effects of the two major reactive oxygen species, superoxide and hydrogen peroxide have been extensively studied. During normal cell growth a tight balance between the two species is kept under check by the cells' anti-oxidant defense systems. Deficiency or defect in this defense armory is invariably associated with neoplasia, thus rendering the intracellular redox status in a state of imbalance and generating a "pro-oxidant" milieu. A variety of model systems have underscored the relationship between a pro-oxidant state and cancer promotion and progression. In this review, we present evidence to support the hypothesis that the effect of intracellular reactive oxygen species on oncogenesis is dependent on the ratio of intracellular superoxide to hydrogen peroxide in that a predominant increase in superoxide supports cell survival and promotes oncogenesis whereas a tilt in favor of hydrogen peroxide prevents carcinogenesis by facilitating cell death signaling.  相似文献

Activated phagocytes produce "reactive oxygen, halogen and nitrogen species" that help to kill some types of microorganism. How these species destroy microorganisms remains, however, an enigma: both direct oxidative damage and indirect damage (whereby reactive species promote the actions of other antibacterial agents) are involved, and no single mechanism is likely to account for the killing of all microorganisms. Phagocyte-derived reactive species are known to injure human tissues and to contribute to inflammation. Recently, however, we have learned that they can also be anti-inflammatory by modulating the immune response. These data have implications for the proposed use of antioxidants to treat inflammation.  相似文献

Taxonomic analysis of a group of morphologically similar and phylogenetically related ponyfishes (Perciformes: Leiognathidae) establishes the Equulites elongatus species group comprising three valid species: Equulites aethopos sp. nov., currently known only from southern Red Sea; Equulites elongatus (Günther 1874), known from northern Australia, Indonesia and Myanmar; and Equulites popei (Whitley 1932), known from Japan, Philippines, Malaysia (Sabah), Thailand (Gulf of Thailand), Oman, the Red Sea, and Mozambique. Although E. popei has previously been regarded as a junior synonym of E. elongatus, the present mitochondrial DNA analysis revealed that these two nominal species are different and that they constitute a monophyletic group separate from other species of Equulites. The E. elongatus species group can be defined by the following of characters: slender body (20–30% in standard length), deeply incised posterior margin of the adipose eyelid, and ventral surface of breast completely scaly. Equulites aethopos sp. nov. differs from the other two species in having smaller eyes (eye diameter 53–68% of postorbital head length vs. 78–137%) and tips of neural and hemal spines of the fourth preural centrum distinctly expanding (vs. slightly expanding). Equulites elongatus is distinguished from E. popei by: scales above and below the lateral line 5–9 and 9–14, respectively (vs. 8–13 and 12–19), anus anteriorly located (distance from the pelvic-fin insertion to the center of anus 30–42% of the distance from the pelvic-fin insertion to the anal-fin origin vs. 35–50%), and more numerous dorsolateral dark marks (1–9 ring marks and 0–14 dark spots smaller than a half of pupil diameter vs. 0–2 and 0–5).  相似文献

Some communities are susceptible to invasions and some are not. Why? Elton suggested in 1958 that the ability of the community to withstand invading species – its biotic resistance – depends on the number of resident species. Later contributors have emphasized the habitat's ability to support species, as well as the contribution of individual species to the resistance. In this study we use information from 184 introductions of Arctic char into Swedish lakes to study both abiotic and biotic aspects of the resident community's ability to resist introductions. We find that the best model included the proportion of forest cover and the proportion of agricultural land cover in the watershed in combination with the presence versus absence of northern pike. Thus, the most important biotic factor to explain the outcome of introductions of Arctic char is the presence of northern pike, a large piscivore. This means that one single species explains the outcome of the introductions better than does the species richness or the saturation level of the community.  相似文献
