- 1 Emerald ash borer Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) is an invasive forest insect pest threatening more than 8 billion ash (Fraxinus spp.) trees in North America. Development of effective survey methods and strategies to slow the spread of A. planipennis requires an understanding of dispersal, particularly in recently established satellite populations.
- 2 We assessed the dispersal of A. planipennis beetles over a single generation at two sites by intensively sampling ash trees at known distances from infested ash logs, the point source of the infestations. Larval density was recorded from more than 100 trees at each site.
- 3 Density of A. planipennis larvae by distance for one site was fit to the Ricker function, inverse power function, and the negative exponential function using a maximum likelihood approach. The prediction of the best model, a negative exponential function, was compared with the results from both sites.
- 4 The present study demonstrates that larval densities rapidly declined with distance, and that most larvae (88.9 and 90.3%) were on trees within 100 m of the emergence point of the adults at each site. The larval distribution pattern observed at both sites was adequately described by the negative exponential function.

Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is an invasive pest of North American ash (Fraxinus spp.) trees first discovered outside of its native range of northeastern Asia in 2002. EAB spread from its initial zone of
discovery in the Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario metropolitan areas, in large part, from inadvertent human-assisted
movement of infested ash materials. EAB infestations are now known in 15 US states and two Canadian provinces. The primary
goal of this study was to use molecular markers to characterize the population genetic structure of EAB in its native and
introduced range. This information may provide valuable insights on the geographic origin, potential host range, invasion
potential, and additional biological control agents for ongoing management efforts of this destructive wood-boring beetle.
EAB were collected from 17 localities in its native Asian range and from 7 localities in North America, and population structure
analyzed using mtDNA gene sequences, AFLP fingerprints, and alleles at 2 microsatellite loci. Analysis of mtDNA cytochrome
oxidase subunit I gene (COI; 439 bp) sequences revealed all North American individuals carry a common mtDNA haplotype also
found in China and South Korea. Additional mtDNA haplotypes observed in China and South Korea differed from the common haplotype
by 1–2 nucleotide substitutions and a single individual from Japan differed by 21 nucleotide changes (4.8%). Analysis using
AFLP fingerprints (108 loci) indicated Asian populations were more highly variable, yet had less overall population structure,
than the North American populations. North American populations appear most closely related to populations in our sample from
the Chinese provinces of Hebei and Tianjin City. Further, population assignment tests assigned 88% of the individual beetles
from North America to either Hebei or Tianjin City. 相似文献

Native to Asia, the emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) has caused extensive mortality of ash tree species (Fraxinus spp.) in the eastern United States. As of 2013, the pest was documented in 18 % of counties within the natural range of ash in the eastern United States. Regional forest inventory data from the U.S. Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis program were used to quantify trends in ash mortality rate and volume per hectare relative to the year of initial emerald ash borer detection. Results indicate that the annual ash mortality rate increases by as much as 2.7 % per year after initial detection of the pest in a county. Corresponding decreases in ash volume (as much as 1.8 m3 per hectare per year) continue for several more years until most live ash is killed. These results, while not necessarily representative of the effects on ash in urban ecosystems, document the severe impact this invading herbivore is having on forests as it expands its range in North America. 相似文献

Predicting the potential geographical distribution of a species is particularly important for pests with strong invasive abilities.
Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard, possibly native to South America, is a spider mite pest of solanaceous crops. This mite is considered
an invasive species in Africa and Europe. A CLIMEX model was developed to predict its global distribution. The model results
fitted the known records of T. evansi except for some records in dry locations. Dryness as well as excess moisture stresses play important roles in limiting the
spread of the mite in the tropics. In North America and Eurasia its potential distribution appears to be essentially limited
by cold stress. Detailed potential distribution maps are provided for T. evansi in the Mediterranean Basin and in Japan. These two regions correspond to climatic borders for the species. Mite establishment
in these areas can be explained by their relatively mild winters. The Mediterranean region is also the main area where tomato
is grown in open fields in Europe and where the pest represents a threat. According to the model, the whole Mediterranean
region has the potential to be extensively colonized by the mite. Wide expansion of the mite to new areas in Africa is also
predicted. Agricultural issues highlighted by the modelled distribution of the pest are discussed.

Allee effects have been applied historically in efforts to understand the low-density population dynamics of rare and endangered
species. Many biological invasions likewise experience the phenomenon of decreasing population growth rates at low population
densities because most founding populations of introduced nonnative species occur at low densities. In range expansion of
established species, the initial colonizers of habitat beyond the organism’s current range are usually at low density, and
thus could be subject to Allee dynamics. There has been consistent empirical and theoretical evidence demonstrating, and in
some cases quantifying, the role of Allee dynamics in the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.), invasion of North America. In this review, we examine the potential causes of the Allee effect in the gypsy moth and
highlight the importance of mate-finding failure as a primary mechanism behind an Allee effect, while the degree to which
generalist predators induce an Allee effect remains unclear. We then explore the role of Allee effects in the establishment
and spread dynamics of the gypsy moth system, which conceptually could serve as a model system for understanding how Allee
effects manifest themselves in the dynamics of biological invasions. 相似文献

The Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis is a successful invader. Whilst non-breeding adult E. sinensis have been associated with the destruction of riverbanks, little is known about the ecology of this species in its invaded
areas. This is especially true of the juveniles which are a key migratory stage. Intertidal surveys along the Thames estuary
indicated an increase in the population since the 1990s. Juvenile E. sinensis were abundant in the sampled upper tidal region of the Thames, refuging under boulders in the intertidal at low tide. Seasonal
differences in sampled populations were observed, with a significantly lower abundance of crabs found during winter compared
to summer. Mark-recaptures indicated movement in the intertidal occurring during high tide, with an influx of new crabs evident
after a single tidal cycle. Endogenous rhythms were also apparent, with peaks in activity occurring corresponding with night-time
high tide conditions. E. sinensis juveniles can successfully exclude similar sized native Carcinus maenas from shelters in the laboratory, regardless of which species originally inhabited the shelter. This may have implications
for native estuarine Carcinus populations, which can rely on such intertidal shelters for refuges. 相似文献

Development and reproduction of the predatory mite Parasitus consanguineus Oudemans et Voigts (Acari: Parasitidae) reared on a diet of first and second instars of Megaselia halterata (Diptera: Phoridae) or Lycoriella ingenua (Diptera: Sciaridae) were studied. Mites were allowed to feed on these diets until death. The developmental time of immature
stages of P. consanguineus was significantly longer when reared on L. ingenua than on M. halterata larvae (8.3 vs. 7.9 days, respectively). Survival to adulthood of P. consanguineus reared on L. ingenua or M. halterata larvae was 63 and 49%, and mite fecundity was 17.8 and 12.3 eggs/female, respectively. Adult females reared on L. ingenua lived on average 6.9 days, whereas those reared on M. halterata lived for 5.7 days. Mite survival, female longevity and fecundity were significantly different among the two diet types. 相似文献

Brassica nigra is a newly found invasive species in Zhejiang Province, China. It distributes alongside the roads, in vegetable fields and
on riversides. When it blooms, some natives there will suffer from allergic rhinitis. We designed gene-specific primer pairs
according to reported profilin genes and successfully isolated their homolog from flower bud cDNA of B. nigra. The gene, designated BnPFN, was submitted to GenBank under accession number EU004073. BnPFN was 405 bp in length encoding 134 amino acids. Expression analysis of BnPFN gene was carried out by means of RT-PCR. The results showed that BnPFN express only in anthers and pollens, and there was no detection in roots, leaves, stems, sepals, petals and pistils. We suggest
that BnPFN is a pollen-specific gene and may be responsible for pollen anaphylactic reactions in those invading areas when B. nigra blooms. 相似文献

The warty cabbage Bunias orientalis is an invasive pest in much of central Europe, including much of Germany since the 1980s, whereas in other countries, such
as The Netherlands, it is a less common exotic species. Here, healthy larvae of Mamestra brassicae, which has been found feeding on B. orientalis plants in Germany, and larvae parasitized by one of its major larval endoparasitoids Microplitis mediator, were reared on both herbivore-induced and noninduced leaves of B. orientalis originating from single large populations growing in The Netherlands and central Germany. Herbivore performance was less
negatively affected than parasitoid performance by differences in plant quality. Development times in both M. brassicae and Mi. mediator were shorter on Dutch than German plants and also shorter on noninduced than induced plants. Moreover, survival and body
size of the parasitoid was more strongly affected by plant population and induction than survival of healthy M. brassicae. Chemical analyses of defensive secondary metabolites [glucosinolates (GS)] revealed that concentrations of the major GS sinalbin
were constitutively expressed in German plants whereas they were induced in Dutch plants. However, in separate feeding bioassays
in which preference for induced and noninduced leaves was compared separately, L3 instars of M. brassicae preferred noninduced German plants over Dutch plants but induced Dutch plants over German plants, revealing that changes
in primary metabolites or an unidentified non-GS compound mediates population-related differences in plant quality. The results
reveal asymmetric effects of plant quality in exotic plants on organisms in the second and third trophic level. 相似文献

Less than a decade after being observed off Florida, the invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish is now widely distributed off the
southeast coast of the United States. As a step towards measuring invasion impacts to native communities, we examine the magnitude
and extent of this invasion by first, compiling reports of lionfish to provide range information and second, estimate lionfish
abundance from two separate studies. We also estimate native grouper (epinepheline serranids) abundance to better assess and
compare lionfish abundances. In the first study we conducted SCUBA diver visual transect surveys at 17 different locations
off the North Carolina coast in water depths of 35–50 m. In the second study, we conducted 27 Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV)
transect surveys at five locations from Florida to North Carolina in water depths of 50–100 m. In both studies, lionfish were
found to be second in abundance only to scamp (Mycteroperca phenax). Lionfish were found in higher abundance in the shallower North Carolina SCUBA surveys ( ha−1) than in the deep water ROV surveys ( ha−1). Lionfish reports continue to expand most recently into the Bahamas, raising the specter of further spread into the Caribbean
and Gulf of Mexico. The potential impacts of lionfish to native communities are likely to be through direct predation, competition
and overcrowding. The high number of lionfish present in the ecosystem increases the potential for cascading impacts throughout
the food chain. Within the southeast region the combined effects of climate change, overfishing and invasive species may have
irreversible consequences to native communities in this region.

Maianthemum bifolium Schmidt (May Lily) is a woodland species with low colonisation ability and high demands for seedling establishment conditions. To study the colonisation process, we analysed the clonal organisation and population structure of Maianthemum bifolium populations in a number of forest fragments using AFLP. A total of 129 genets were identified. Most (41/53) patches of M. bifolium in recent (less than 80 years old) and old (at least 175 years of age) parts of the woodlands contained single genets. Only one of the 12 patches with multiple genotypes showed intermingled growth. Besides seed dispersal also dispersal of vegetative material contributed to colonisation since five genotypes were found in more than one patch, with patches up to 51 m apart. Population differentiation between populations in different forests was significant (FST = 0.10) and indicated low gene flow. This level of differentiation was already found between populations in different parts of the same forest, just over 200 m apart. In fact, only two adjacent populations were not significantly differentiated, one population located in old forest whereas the other was established next to it on a former pasture re-forested after 1916. Limited gene flow is also consistent with the decrease of genetic similarities with physical distance, which relationship is highly significant but only for distances up to 400 m. 相似文献

Two repeated DNA sequences isolated from a partial genomic DNA library of Helianthus annuus, p HaS13 and p HaS211, were shown to represent portions of the int gene of a Ty3 /gypsy retroelement and of the RNase-Hgene of a Ty1 /copia retroelement, respectively. Southern blotting patterns obtained by hybridizing the two probes to BglII- or DraI-digested genomic DNA from different Helianthus species showed p HaS13 and p HaS211 were parts of dispersed repeats at least 8 and 7 kb in length, respectively, that were conserved in all species studied. Comparable hybridization patterns were obtained in all species with p HaS13. By contrast, the patterns obtained by hybridizing p HaS211 clearly differentiated annual species from perennials. The frequencies of p HaS13- and p HaS211-related sequences in different species were 4.3x10(4)-1.3x10(5) copies and 9.9x10(2)-8.1x10(3) copies per picogram of DNA, respectively. The frequency of p HaS13-related sequences varied widely within annual species, while no significant difference was observed among perennial species. Conversely, the frequency variation of p HaS211-related sequences was as large within annual species as within perennials. Sequences of both families were found to be dispersed along the length of all chromosomes in all species studied. However, Ty3 /gypsy-like sequences were localized preferentially at the centromeric regions, whereas Ty1/ copia-like sequences were less represented or absent around the centromeres and plentiful at the chromosome ends. These findings suggest that the two sequence families played a role in Helianthusgenome evolution and species divergence, evolved independently in the same genomic backgrounds and in annual or perennial species, and acquired different possible functions in the host genomes. 相似文献

Rice brown spot, caused by Bipolaris oryzae, can be a serious disease causing a considerable yield loss. Trichoderma harzianum is an effective biocontrol agent for a number of plant fungal diseases. Thus, this research was carried out to investigate
the mechanisms of action by which T. harzianum antagonizes Bipolaris oryzae in vitro, and the efficacy of spray application of a spore suspension of T. harzianum for control of rice brown spot disease under field conditions. In vitro, the antagonistic behavior of T. harzianum resulted in the overgrowth of B. oryzae by T. harzianum, while the␣antifungal metabolites of T.␣harzianum completely prevented the linear growth of B. oryzae. Light and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations showed no evidence that mycoparasitism contributed to the aggressive
nature of the tested isolate of T. harzianum against B. oryzae. Under field conditions, spraying of a spore suspension of T. harzianum at 108 spore ml−1 significantly reduced the disease severity (DS) and disease incidence (DI) on the plant leaves, and also significantly increased
the grain yield, total grain carbohydrate, and protein, and led to a significant increase in the total photosynthetic pigments
(chlorophyll a and b and carotenoids) in rice leaves. 相似文献

Much research has focused on effects of plant parasites on host-plant physiology and growth, but little is known about effects of host physiological condition on parasite growth. Using the parasitic dwarf mistletoe Arceuthobium vaginatum subsp. cryptopodum (Viscaceae) and its host Pinus ponderosa, we investigated whether changes in host physiological condition influenced mistletoe shoot development in northern Arizona forests. We conducted two studies in two consecutive years and used forest thinning (i.e., competitive release) to manipulate host physiological condition. We removed dwarf mistletoe shoots in April, before the onset of the growing season, and measured the amount of regrowth in the first season after forest thinning (Study I: n=38 trees; Study II: n=35 trees). Thinning increased tree uptake of water and carbon in both studies, but had no effect on leaf N concentration or δ13C. Mistletoe shoot growth was greater on trees with high uptake of water and carbon in thinned stands than trees with low uptake in unthinned stands. These findings show that increased resource uptake by host trees increases resources to these heterotrophic dwarf mistletoes, and links mistletoe performance to changes in host physiological condition. 相似文献

Tomato is the most important vegetable crop in Spain. The mirid bug Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) commonly appears in large numbers in protected and open-air tomato crops where little or no broad-spectrum insecticides
are used. Nesidiocoris tenuis is known to be a predator of whiteflies, thrips and several other pest species. However, it is also considered a pest because
it can feed on tomato plants, causing necrotic rings on stems and flowers and punctures in fruits. Our objectives were to
evaluate predation by N. tenuis on sweetpotato whitefly Bemisia tabaci Gennadius under greenhouse conditions and establish its relationship to N. tenuis feeding on tomato. Two different release rates of N. tenuis were compared with an untreated control (0, 1 and 4 N. tenuis plant−1) in cages of 8 m2. Significant reductions of greater than 90% of the whitefly population and correspondingly high numbers of N. tenuis were observed with both release rates. Regression analysis showed that necrotic rings on foliage caused by N. tenuis were best explained by the ratio of B. tabaci nymphs:N. tenuis as predicted by the equation y = 15.086x − 0.6359.

The present paper reports a protocol for minimum growth conservation of Drosophyllum lusitanicum (L.) Link. in vitro. Double-node cuttings were maintained for 4, 8 and 12 months at 5 or 25 °C in the dark. The effects of sucrose either alone
at 5, 20, 30, 40 and 60 g dm−3 or at 20, 40 and 60 g dm−3 in combination with 20 g dm−3 mannitol, on survival and post-storage shoot multiplication efficiency were investigated. The cultures could effectively
be conserved under minimum growth at 5 °C for 8 months on Murashige and Skoog’s medium supplemented with 60 g dm−3 sucrose, 20 g dm−3 mannitol and 0.91 μM zeatin. Following extended conservation, the cultures could be successfully regenerated into new shoots,
and they were morphologically similar to those of non-stored controls. 相似文献

The evolution of increased competitive ability (EICA) hypothesis predicts that release from natural enemies in the introduced
range favors exotic plants evolving to have greater competitive ability and lower herbivore resistance than conspecifics from
the native range. We tested the EICA hypothesis in a common garden experiment with Sapium sebiferum in which seedlings from native (China) and invasive (USA) populations were grown in all pairwise combinations in the native
range (China) in the presence of herbivores. When paired seedlings were from the same continent, shoot mass and leaf damage
per seedling were significantly greater for plants from invasive populations than those from native populations. Despite more
damage from herbivores, plants from invasive populations still outperformed those from native populations when they were grown
together. Increased competitive ability and higher herbivory damage of invasive populations relative to native populations
of S. sebiferum support the EICA hypothesis. Regression of biomass against percent leaf damage showed that plants from invasive populations
tolerated herbivory more effectively than those from native populations. The results of this study suggest that S. sebiferum has become a faster-growing, less herbivore-resistant, and more herbivore-tolerant plant in the introduced range. This implies
that increased competitive ability of exotic plants may be associated with evolutionary changes in both resistance and tolerance
to herbivory in the introduced range. Understanding these evolutionary changes has important implications for biological control
strategies targeted at problematic invaders. 相似文献

The interaction between Shigella dysenteriae or Shigella sonnei and Acanthamoeba castellanii was studied by viable counts, gentamicin assay and electron microscopy. The result showed that Shigella dysenteriae or Shigella sonnei grew and survived in the presence of amoebae for more than 3 weeks. Gentamicin assay showed that the Shigella were viable inside the Acanthamoeba castellanii which was confirmed by electron microscopy that showed the Shigella localized in the cytoplasm of the Acanthamoeba castellanii. In conclusion, the relationship between Shigella dysenteriae and Shigella sonnei with Acanthamoeba castellanii is symbiotic, and accordingly free-living amoebae may serve as a transmission reservoir for Shigella in water. 相似文献
