The relationship between two natural enemies of Coccus viridis (green coffee scale), an important hempiteran coffee pest was determined using a combination of experimental and observational approaches. Adult and larval forms of Azya orbigera, a coccinellid beetle predator were included on leaves of coffee plants with healthy scale populations resulting in lower proportions of scales infected with the second natural enemy, an entomopathogenic fungus (Lecanicillium lecanii). C. viridis populations on leaves where A. orbigera were excluded exhibited twice as much fungal infection by L. lecanii. In addition, field surveys of C. viridis populations on whole coffee plants corroborated experimental findings with eight times less fungal infection for coffee plants where A. orbigera was present than for plants where the predator was absent a month prior to surveys of L. lecanii. Despite a reduction in fungal infection in both the experiment and survey, the presence of the beetle reduced overall biological control of the pest only in the experiment where the receiver of the antagonism (L. lecanii) was more dominant in controlling C. viridis than the instigator of the antagonism (A. orbigera). In the survey, A. orbigera was dominant over L. lecanii, resulting in equal to greater levels of biological control depending on the degree to which A. orbigera was dominant over L. lecanii. Our results indicate that a negative relationship exists between A. orbigera and L. lecanii, but that contrary to expectations, this antagonism may in some cases improve overall biological control of the shared pest target.  相似文献

Many cichlid species dig spawning pits or nests in soft bottoms and exhibit many substrate oriented activities. Despite this fact being of general knowledge, captive cichlids in laboratory and aquaculture set-ups are often kept in the absence of a soft substrate that they can manipulate. This raises a potential welfare issue, depending on how the substrate is valued by cichlid fish. The aim of this study is to assess the importance of substrate for male Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) in social and non-social contexts. Preferences were established as a measure of time spent in two choice compartments, before and after the presence of a female. Locomotory activity, social interactions and substrate-related behaviours were recorded. Results show that dominant males prefer the area with substrate regardless of social context, and that female's presence strengthens this preference. The same preference is not apparent in the subordinate males, except for foraging. To draw conclusions on the importance of substrate to subordinates, preferences should also be assessed in agonistic contexts, during which substrate may serve to displace aggression. These results, together with related previous studies, show that the lack of substrate is particularly deleterious in a reproductive context, and thus it is likely to decrease the welfare state of breeding males of Mozambique tilapia.  相似文献

IS911 transposition involves a free circular transposon intermediate where the terminal inverted repeat sequences are connected. Transposase synthesis is usually driven by a weak promoter, p(IRL), in the left end (IRL). Circle junction formation creates a strong promoter, p(junc), with a -35 sequence located in the right end and the -10 sequence in the left. p(junc) assembly would permit an increase in synthesis of transposase from the transposon circle, which would be expected to stimulate integration. Insertion results in p(junc) disassembly and a return to the low p(IRL)- driven transposase levels. We demonstrate that p(junc) plays an important role in regulating IS911 transposition. Inactivation of p(junc) strongly decreased IS911 transposition when transposase was produced in its natural configuration. This novel feedback mechanism permits transient and controlled activation of integration only in the presence of the correct (circular) intermediate. We have also investigated other members of the IS3 and other IS families. Several, but not all, IS3 family members possess p(junc) equivalents, underlining that the regulatory mechanisms adopted to fine-tune transposition may be different.  相似文献

Although social behaviour can bring many benefits to an individual, there are also costs that may be incurred whenever the members of a social group interact. The formation of dominance hierarchies could offer a means of reducing some of the costs of social interaction, but individuals within the hierarchy may end up paying differing costs dependent upon their position within the hierarchy. These differing interaction costs may therefore influence the behaviour of the group, as subordinate individuals may experience very different benefits and costs to dominants when the group is conducting a given behaviour. Here, a state-dependent dynamic game is described which considers a pair of social foragers where there is a set dominance relationship within the pair. The model considers the case where the subordinate member of the pair pays an interference cost when it and the dominant individual conduct specific pairs of behaviours together. The model demonstrates that if the subordinate individual pays these energetic costs when it interacts with the dominant individual, this has effects upon the behaviour of both subordinate and the dominant individuals. Including interaction costs increases the amount of foraging behaviour both individuals conduct, with the behaviour of the pair being driven by the subordinate individual. The subordinate will tend to be the lighter individual for longer periods of time when interaction costs are imposed. This supports earlier suggestions that lighter individuals should act as the decision-maker within the pair, giving leadership-like behaviours that are based upon energetic state. Pre-existing properties of individuals such as their dominance will be less important for determining which individual makes the decisions for the pair. This suggests that, even with strict behavioural hierarchies, identifying which individual is the dominant one is not sufficient for identifying which one is the leader.  相似文献

The African cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni, has a complex social system with a sophisticated social hierarchy that offers unique opportunities to understand how social rank and its physiological substrates relate to behavioral strategies. In A. burtoni, a small fraction of the males are dominant (T, territorial), as distinguished by being large, brightly colored, reproductively active, and aggressively defending territories. In contrast, the majority of males are non-dominant (NT, non-territorial), being smaller, drably colored, sexually immature, and typically schooling with females. The social system is regulated by aggressive interactions between males and behavioral responses to aggression can be direct or displaced with respect to the animal that acts. To determine whether direct and displaced behaviors are differentially exhibited by T and NT males, individuals were shown a video presentation of a dominant male displaying aggressively. Analysis of aggressive acts toward the video display and displaced activity toward a tank mate revealed that T males exhibited more direct behavior (toward the video display), while NT males engaged in more displaced behavior (toward tank mates). Because similar experiments with primates suggest that shifts in behavioral strategies are linked to changes in the stress response (as measured by circulating cortisol levels), we measured cortisol levels of T and NT males following exposure to the aggressive stimulus. Although in some animals subordinate males are reported to have higher cortisol levels, here we show that in A. burtoni the endocrine response to specific situations can vary considerably even among animals of the same status. Interestingly, NT males with intermediate cortisol levels showed more directed behavior while NT males with both high and low cortisol levels showed more displaced. This suggests an optimal physiological stress response in NT males that predisposes them to challenge aggressors perhaps making it more likely for them to ascend in status.  相似文献

Neuropeptides in the arginine vasotocin/arginine vasopressin (AVT/AVP) family play a major role in the regulation of social behavior by their actions in the brain. In mammals, AVP is found within a circuit of recriprocally connected limbic structures that form the social behavior neural network. This review examines the role played by AVP within this network in controlling social processes that are critical for the formation and maintenance of social relationships: social recognition, social communication and aggression. Studies in a number of mammalian species indicate that AVP and AVP V1a receptors are ideally suited to regulate the expression of social processes because of their plasticity in response to factors that influence social behavior. The pattern of AVP innervation and V1a receptors across the social behavior neural network may determine the potential range and intensity of social responses that individuals display in different social situations. Although fundamental information on how social behavior is wired in the brain is still lacking, it is clear that different social behaviors can be influenced by the actions of AVP in the same region of the network and that AVP can act within multiple regions of this network to regulate the expression of individual social behaviors. The existing data suggest that AVP can influence social behavior by modulating the interpretation of sensory information, by influencing decision making and by triggering complex motor outputs. A translating eye receives a radial pattern of motion that is centered on the direction of heading. If the eye is rotating and translating, visual and extraretinal signals help to cancel the rotation and to perceive heading correctly. This involves (1) an interaction between visual and eye movement signals and (2) a motion template stage that analyzes the pattern of visual motion. Early interaction leads to motion templates that integrate head-centered motion signals in the visual field. Integration of retinal motion signals leads to late interaction. Here, we show that retinal flow limits precision of heading. This result argues against an early, vector subtraction type of interaction, but is consistent with a late, gain field type of interaction with eye velocity signals and neurophysiological findings in area MST of the monkey.  相似文献

We suggest that the ultimate outcome of interactions between native species and invasive species (extinction or coexistence) depends on the number of simultaneous negative interactions (competition and predation), which depends on relative body sizes of the species. Multiple simultaneous interactions may constrain the ability of native species to trade fitness components (i.e., reduced growth for reduced risk of predation) causing a spiral to extinction. We found evidence for five types of interactions between the adults and juveniles of introduced western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) and the juveniles of native least chub (Iotichthys phlegethontis). We added ten large (23–28 mm) and seven small (9–13 mm) young-of-the-year (YOY) least chub to replicate enclosures with zero, low, and high densities of mosquitofish in a desert spring ecosystem. Treatments with mosquitofish reduced the average survival of least chub by one-third. No small YOY least chub survived in enclosures with high mosquitofish densities. We also performed two laboratory experiments to determine mortality to predation, aggressiveness, and habitat selection of least chub in the presence of mosquitofish. Mean mortality of least chub due to predation by large mosquitofish was 69.7% over a 3-h trial. Least chub were less aggressive, selected protected habitats (Potamogeton spp.), and were more stationary in the presence of mosquitofish where the dominance hierarchy was large mosquitofish>>large least chubsmall mosquitofish>>small least chub. Least chub juveniles appear to be figuratively caught in a vice. Rapid growth to a size refuge could reduce the risk of predation, but the simultaneous effects of competition decreased least chub growth and prolonged the period when juveniles were vulnerable to mosquitofish predation.  相似文献

Several experiments were conducted to investigate the dynamics of central regulation of thyroid function in the red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, by manipulating a well-characterized circadian rhythm of T(4) secretion. In the first experiment, red drum were reared under either a long (16L:8D) or short (8L:16D) photoperiod and fed at the same time relative to dawn. The same feeding time under different photoperiods maintained the same phase relationship between T(4) cycles under each photoperiod. This suggests that the circadian clock that determines when the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis is activated is comprised of a feeding-entrained oscillator and a light-entrained oscillator that interact to determine the phase of the T(4) rhythm. Additionally, the amplitude of the main T(4) peak of the cycle was inversely related to the frequency of feeding, while the duration of the main T(4) peak was directly related to feeding frequency under a long photoperiod. Feeding time appears to modify the diurnal profile of circulating T(4) by stimulating post-prandial T(4) secretion that subsequently results in negative feedback on the HPT axis to regulate thyroidal status. In following experiments, red drum immersed in T(3), in lieu of a meal at a specific time that would diminish the main T(4) peak, exhibited a dose-dependent decline in amplitude of the T(4) cycle. This demonstrates that T(3) can exert negative feedback on the HPT axis of red drum to maintain appropriate thyroid hormone concentrations. These data are consistent with a dynamic and physiologically important central component of the regulation of thyroid function in fish.  相似文献

A visual set was used as a model to study the influence of the increased memory load on the recognition of facial expression in 70 healthy adults. In order to additionally load the working memory, we lengthened the time gap between target (faces) and trigger stimuli. Such a lengthening from 1 to 8 s resulted in an increase of set plasticity (fewer mistakes in facial expression recognition). It also led to a reduction of the reaction time and less number of contrast illusions in recognition. We analyzed theta- and alpha-band EEG changes during individual segments of the time gap and suggested that repeated trials with a certain fixed interval between stimuli formed an inner representation of the interval duration. This inner representation up-regulates the visual attention in case of anticipation of a relevant event (stimulus) and down-regulates the attention when the stimulus is not expected. In case of the plastic set, the induced EEG synchronization in the alpha band is stronger in the trials with correct recognition in the middle of the inter-stimulus time gap. We think this synchronization reflects the action of the top-down cognitive control that suppresses the influence of irrelevant information on the brain activity. Theta-band dynamics in the inter-stimulus time gap can be associated with the emotional strain caused by the fact that a person had to retain in memory (for several seconds) the result of facial expression recognition.  相似文献

Recent theory suggests that much of the wide variation in individual behavior that exists within cooperative animal societies can be explained by variation in the future direct component of fitness, or the probability of inheritance. Here we develop two models to explore the effect of variation in future fitness on social aggression. The models predict that rates of aggression will be highest toward the front of the queue to inherit and will be higher in larger, more productive groups. A third prediction is that, in seasonal animals, aggression will increase as the time available to inherit the breeding position runs out. We tested these predictions using a model social species, the paper wasp Polistes dominulus. We found that rates of both aggressive "displays" (aimed at individuals of lower rank) and aggressive "tests" (aimed at individuals of higher rank) decreased down the hierarchy, as predicted by our models. The only other significant factor affecting aggression rates was date, with more aggression observed later in the season, also as predicted. Variation in future fitness due to inheritance rank is the hidden factor accounting for much of the variation in aggressiveness among apparently equivalent individuals in this species.  相似文献

Compounds mutagenic toward Salmonella typhimurium strain TA98 in the presence of rat-liver homogenates (S9) were formed when fish flesh was fried at 199 degrees C. Three species of Hawaiian fish commonly consumed in Hawaii (skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis; yellowfin tuna, Neothunnus macropterus; and milkfish, Chanos chanos) were cooked in an electric skillet, along with samples of sole (Microstomus pacificus). Organic extracts of the fish were tested in the Ames Salmonella mutagenic assay using tester strain TA98 and S9. Basic organic extracts of fried, but not raw, samples exhibited significant mutagenicity. The levels of mutagenicity were also higher among the red flesh Hawaiian fish ('ahi, aku and awa) than with the white flesh sole. Creatine and creatinine contents were highest in the Hawaiian fish and lower in the sole. Creatine levels in the fish were 50-100 times greater than the creatinine content and varied from a high of 645 mg/100 g wet weight of fish for yellowfin tuna to a low value of 251 mg/100 g for sole. Mutagen levels are only approximately related to creatine/creatinine levels suggesting that other components contained in these fish may be as important as the guanidines in determining the levels of mutagen in the cooked fish.  相似文献

Background

It is often suggested that psychosocial factors, such as stress, or one''s social position, may play an important role in producing social gradients in human disease. Evidence in favour of this model of health inequalities has relied, in part, on studies of the health effects of the natural social hierarchies found among non-human primates. This study aimed to assess the strength of this evidence.

Methodology/Principal Findings

A systematic review was carried out to identify all studies of psychosocial factors and coronary artery disease (CAD) in non-human primates. We searched databases (MEDLINE, PsycInfo, EMBASE, and Primatelit from inception to November 2010) to identify experimental and observational studies of the impact of social reorganisation, social instability, and disruption of dominance hierarchies on primate CAD outcomes. We also handsearched bibliographies and examined the citations to those studies in public health articles. Fourteen studies were found which presented evidence on CAD and social status and/or psychosocial stress. These suggested that the association between social status and disease may be sex-specific: in female monkeys dominant status may be protective, with subordinate females having a greater extent of atherosclerosis. In male monkeys the reverse may be the case.

Conclusions/Significance

Overall, non-human primate studies present only limited evidence for an association between social status and CAD, Despite this, there is selective citation of individual non-human primate studies in reviews and commentaries relating to human disease aetiology. Such generalisation of data from monkey studies to human societies does not appear warranted.  相似文献

Met-myoglobin is oxidized both by H2O2 and other hydroperoxides to a species with a higher iron valency state and the spectral characteristics of ferryl-myoglobin. Glutathione (GSH) reduces the latter species back to met-myoglobin with parallel oxidation to its disulfide (GSSG) but cannot reduce met-myoglobin to ferrous myoglobin. Under aerobic conditions, the GSH-mediated reduction of ferry-myoglobin is associated with O2 consumption and amounts of GSSG are formed far in excess over that of the peroxide added. Under anaerobic conditions, this ratio is close to unity. These results are interpreted in terms of a one-electron redox process involving the reduction of ferryl-myoglobin to met-myoglobin and the one-electron oxidation of GSH to its thiyl radical. Further reactions of thiyl radicals are influenced by the presence of oxygen which will be the determining factor in the ratio H2O2 added/GSSG formed. It is suggested that, when oxygen is limiting, myoglobin may serve as a protector of muscle cells against peroxides and other oxidants.  相似文献
