Omitted spawning in compensatory-growing perch 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
K. Holmgren 《Journal of fish biology》2003,62(4):918-927
Individual growth trajectories of perch Perca fluviatilis in a Swedish forest lake (sampled in March) revealed growth depression at intermediate sizes, followed by enhanced, compensatory growth at larger sizes. All males of age ≥3+ years had mature, almost ripe testes. The proportion of spawning females was higher at age 3+ years (79%) than at older ages (44%), indicating that older females with non-developing ovaries were resting rather than immature juveniles. Resting females were 175–247 mm in total length ( L T ), and they were usually in a state of increasing annual growth. Spawning females were of more variable size (123–418 mm), and the larger ones had entered the faster growing state ≥2+ years before catch. Detectable growth costs of spawning indicated that resting females made a trade-off between current and future reproduction, rather than being constrained by poor feeding conditions. 相似文献

Oviposition site selection and embryo mortality in perch 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Egg strands of perch Perca fluviatilis around the margins of a lake were associated significantly with submerged vegetation. The proportion of dead embryos was significantly higher in egg strands deposited directly on the lake bottom than those on submerged vegetation. 相似文献

The development of spawning in perch, pike and roach in Lake Geneva has been studied by means of artificial spawning substrates, laid at different depths, from 1984 to 1993. In Lake Geneva, perch spawned in May. A rise of surface water temperature up to 14 °C stimulated spawning activity while bad weather (surface temperature at 10 °C) induced a spread of the spawning period over more than one month. The spawning period was delayed in years when the mean width of perch egg-ribbons was the largest; this corresponded to the biggest females. At the beginning of the spawning period (early in May), perch preferentially chose a depth of 4 m to spawn. In contrast, at the end of the spawning period, maximum spawning intensity was observed at a depth of 12 m. This phenomenon was more pronounced when water temperature rose above 14 °C in the top 4 m while it remained below 12 °C at a depth of 12 m. Pike spawned at the end of April and at the beginning of May in Lake Geneva. They preferred spruce branches among the different spawning substrates that we tested in Lake Vouglans. When the water temperature increased at the surface of Lake Geneva, pike preferred to lay their eggs on substrates set at 3 m depth where the temperature was cooler than in the surface layer (10.5 °C vs 14 °C). Roach spawned during the last two weeks of May or during the first two weeks of June in Lake Geneva, depending on water temperature. Spawning had generally been spread over a week, but a sudden decrease of water temperature could slow spawning intensity. Roach were able to lay their eggs on natural or synthetic substrates, located 0.5 m below the surface near the shore as well as, at a distance of several hundred metres from the shore. The survival of eggs was always above 90% for perch and roach and generally above 70% for pike. 相似文献

Effects of temperature on life history variables in perch 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Population structure, recruitment, mortality, life expectancy, age at maturity, gonad development, fecundity, net reproductive rate and energy storage were studied in a perch population exposed to thermal discharge. The experiment was conducted during 1978–1990 in an artificial enclosure at a nuclear power plant on the Baltic Sea coast. Abundance increased after the plant started operating, although the proportion of larger perch dropped to a low level. Recruitment improved, but adult mortality increased. This effect was accentuated as the fishes matured very early and at a very small size, reducing their ability to support a growing gonad in high winter temperatures. During the spawning period, condition dropped to very low levels accompanied by increased mortality. Surviving fish delayed the next spawning by one or more years and reduced their fecundity. Body condition thus improved in large perch at the end of the study period. Life-time fecundity was reduced, and reproductive performance shifted to youner ages. 相似文献

Ova ageing is the most important factor affecting fish egg quality after ovulation. Long-term storage of fish ova, using cryopreservation and vitrification techniques, has been unsuccessful to date. Instead, short-term in vitro ova storage has been used successfully and optimized in some cultured fish species. In vitro ova storage can drastically improve mass production of larvae and juveniles in the hatcheries by providing the possibility of the synchronous artificial fertilization for different females. To study how long unfertilized eggs of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) can retain their fertilizing ability after stripping, eggs were stored at temperatures of 4°C, 8°C and 12°C for 72 h post-stripping (HPS). The stored eggs of four female perch were separately fertilized at 0 h (i.e. control eggs fertilized before storage) and at 6-hour intervals during the experimental period of 72 h. The embryos reaching the eyed-egg and hatched-larvae stages, eyed-egg mortality and larval malformation rates were recorded as indices of egg quality. The results indicated that the maximum eyed eggs and hatched larvae (86% and 63%, respectively) were observed for eggs fertilized immediately after stripping, whereas the storage of the eggs at 4°C for 48 HPS decreased the eyed-egg and hatched-larvae rates to 46% and 17%, respectively. The use of a higher storage temperature resulted in a more rapid decrease in egg viability: eyed-egg and hatched-larvae rates of 23% and 9%, respectively, were obtained after 48 HPS storage at 8°C and 2% and 1% for eggs stored at 12°C. Eyed-egg mortality and larval malformation rates were not significantly affected by post-stripping ova ageing for at least up to 36 h. Thereafter, both values increased significantly and were measured to be the highest in the most aged ova. The present study demonstrated that stripped Eurasian perch eggs can be stored for at least 12 h at 4°C to 12°C without a significant reduction in their quality. 相似文献

Repetitive activation of perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) sperm motility was investigated in this study. The first phase of sperm motility activation was initiated by dilution in a 260 mM glucose solution (75% motility). The second phase of motility was achieved by adding water to previously activated sperm, so that the glucose concentration dropped to 220 mM (24% motility). Finally, the third phase was obtained by further addition of water (down to 90 mM glucose) to the activated sperm suspension (15% motility). Parallel measurements of sperm ATP content were also made. The median value for nonactivated sperm was 43.9 nmol ATP/109 spermatozoa. The ATP concentration decreased significantly from 35 to 7 nmol ATP/109 spermatozoa after successive activations of motility in the above glucose solutions. Sperm velocity ranged in value from 25 to 330 μm/sec at 10 sec postactivation, from 10 to 290 μm/sec at 30 sec, and from 0 to 200 μm/sec at 45 sec. A model postulating several classes in the population of spermatozoa is developed, tentatively accounting for such successive activation. Possible further application of multiple sperm activation is discussed. 相似文献

Lake Piediluco is a naturally regulated lake used for hydroelectric purposes. Management of the lake and the eutrophic conditions
of its waters have had a negative impact on fish populations, particularly that of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.). In order to increase the natural reproduction of this species, an experimental program was undertaken from 1997 to 2003
to facilitate reproduction by providing artificial spawning substrates. In Lake Piediluco perch spawn from March to May. Egg
ribbons ranged in length from 30 to 180 cm and contained from 12,740 to 205,466 eggs. The fraction of degenerated eggs ranged
from 0.20% to 63.30% (average 10.20%). The results demonstrate the effectiveness of artificial substrates as suitable substrates
for the reproduction of perch.

Holding temperature during the breeding season influences final maturation and egg quality in common wolffish 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Mature common wolffish, Anarhichas lupus L., previously held at 8°C for several months, were exposed to 4, 8 or 12°C throughout the breeding season (November-January). Regardless of temperature, some females ovulated in early-November, but thereafter ovulation was delayed in the 8 and 12°C groups compared with the 4°C group. Temperature experienced by the adult fish also affected egg development and survival even though eggs were incubated at a common temperature of 6°C. The percentages of normally cleaved eggs (at the 32-cell stage) and egg survival to the eyed stage were significantly lower in the 12°C group (8%) than in the 4°C (73%) and 8°C (48%) groups. The differences in egg survival were also significant between the 4 and 8°C groups. Egg survival was also influenced by the length of time the broodfish had been exposed to the different temperatures: at 4 and 12°C there were significant positive and negative relationships, respectively, between egg survival and the number of days for which the female had been exposed to the given temperature prior to ovulation. Temperature experienced by the female did not affect egg size, relative egg weight, fertilization rate, relative fecundity or the number of ovulating individuals. The results indicate that both the timing of ovulation and egg quality of common wolffish are affected by the temperature experienced during the breeding season. 相似文献

The timing of spawning of perch was examined in four acidified lakes (pH 4.4–4.8) and in one circum-neutral lake (pH 6.3) in southern Finland in spring 1987. In three of the lakes, perch started to spawn soon after the ice melt (4–14 degree days > 5° C) and had spawned by the end of May at about 100 degree days > 5° C. In the two most acidified lakes, fish started to spawn later, at 35 and 60 degree days > 5° C, and had spawned in early June, at about 200 degree days > 5° C. The maturing of gonad products was delayed in both males and females. 相似文献

Effects of overripening on spawning behaviour and reproductive success of Atlantic salmon females spawning in a controlled flow channel 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The influence of overripening on salmonid egg quality has often been described in artificial breeding. However, no information exists on the impact of this factor on fish reproducing naturally, although it is likely to be critical, especially in disturbed environments. Pairs of Atlantic salmon in which the size of the male and the female was evenly matched were released in a spawning channel from 1 to 12 days after ovulation. Handling did not affect egg quality. Overripening had a negative effect on egg viability. Egg mortality, infertility and malformations increased with the number of days after ovulation. In females which had just matured, 16·7% of their recovered eggs were dead, 3·1% were unfertilized and 1·7% were malformed, as compared to 25·4, 9·7 and 5·4%, respectively, in females that had been mature for at least a week. Overripening played a role in both female spawning behaviour and capacity to spawn, as females which had been mature for over a week released their eggs more quickly while they retained more ova in their abdominal cavity than early spawning females. Thus, in studies of reproductive behaviour and in particular of sexual selection, it is critical to take into account the maturation status of females since the duration of spawning activity is used by various authors to determine female sexual motivation. Alternatively, overripening may decrease the female selectivity for mates. 相似文献

Growth (length, weight) of yellow perch Perca flavescens in western and west-central Lake Erie began between June and July, possibly reaching asymptotic size by early winter. Energy density (kJ g−1 ) of somatic tissue increased markedly from June to September, then declined to low levels by the following spring. Consequently, energy mass (kJ) of somatic tissue increased to September and then declined slowly until March. Ovarian growth began in October, and the size of the ovaries was maximal in April, just before spawning in May. The energy density of ovaries, however, increased to a peak in December, and then declined. The increase in ovary size in the winter, therefore, resulted largely from an allocation of tissue of low energy density. Fecundity and gonad size were correlated with somatic and gonadal energy density. A bioenergetics model was used to describe the monthly allocations of energy to respiration, growth, excretion, and reproduction. Most direct reproductive costs (80%) were incurred from September to December, corresponding to the cycle in the activity of the liver. Energy acquired in the early summer may be critical for determining maturation, fecundity, and egg quality. From 1978 to 1990, <80% of the females from the western and west-central basins of Lake Erie were classed as spent in July. 相似文献

Effect of water temperature and size of females on the timing of spawning of perch Perca fluviatilis L. in Lake Geneva from 1984 to 2003 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effects of water temperature on the timing of spawning of perch Perca fluviatilis in Lake Geneva were assessed in a 20 year survey (1984–2003). Spawning started at the end of April or at the beginning of May, when the water temperature rose to >10° C, but most of the spawns were laid when water temperature exceeded 12° C. This led to a positive correlation between the date of the mid-spawning period and the date when the water temperature rose to >12° C. Large perch had a tendency to spawn later than the small ones, which led to a positive correlation between the date of mid-spawning period and the yearly mean width of perch egg-ribbons. The coefficient of multiple determination between the date of mid-spawning period and the mean width of the ribbon of spawn, combined with the date when the water temperature rose to >12° C was r 2 = 0·77. The perch generally chose deeper spawning places (12 m) at the end of the spawning period than at the beginning (4 m), which was related to water temperature. 相似文献

Based on egg collection records, spontaneous spawning activity of sea bass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch), reared in floating net cages followed a semilunar cycle. The peak of multiple spawnings coincided with declining spring tides of quarter moon periods. Maximum diameter of intra-ovarian, ripe oocytes (0.51–0.55 mm) occurred in synchrony with the quarter moon periods. Smaller oocytes (0.44–0.47 mm) were sampled during the new and full moon periods. Two structural analogues of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRHa) (des-Gly10 , d -Ala6 -LHRH ethylamide and d -Ala6 , Pro9 -Nethylamide-LHRH), in pelleted or dissolved form, induced mature female sea bass with a mean egg diameter of at least 0.40 mm to spawn at any day during the lunar cycle. The onset of spontaneous and LHRHa-induced spawnings occurred during low tides in the evening until dawn (from 19.00 to 05.00 hours). These results demonstrate that LHRHa can effectively induce mature sea bass to spawn independent of the highly predictable semilunar spawning rhythm. In addition, the occurrence of both spontaneous and hormone-induced spawnings at a precise period of the day suggest a tidal and diurnal cue entraining spawning of mature female sea bass. 相似文献

The perch foraging pattern in a Finnish lake (64) N) was crepuscular and they moved into littoral areas at dusk and returned to deeper waters by dawn. Predation on vendace larvae was guided by environmental cues, mainly temperature and light periodicity, which affected the density and foraging activity of perch in the littoral area. The availability and the vulnerability of different food categories were both responsible for the perch diet. The hypothesis that perch have a generally decisive role in the regulation of vendace larval abundance through predation at the time of high vendace larvae concentration in the littoral area was not supported. We emphasize the need to evaluate biological phenomena, such as predator–prey relationships, in the light of the relevant physical variables, and to do so within appropriate time and space scales, instead of relying on indirect estimates of the predator and prey population abundance and using their reciprocity as evidence of the interaction. 相似文献

Organisms and parts of an organism like eggs or individual cells developing in colder environments tend to grow bigger. A
unifying explanation for this Bergmann's rule extended to ectotherms has not been found, and whether this is an adaptive response
or a physiological constraint is debated. The dependence of egg and clutch size on the mother's temperature environment were
investigated in the yellow dung fly Scathophaga stercoraria. Smaller eggs were laid at warmer temperatures in the field and the laboratory, where possible confounding variables were
controlled for. As clutch size at the same time was unaffected by temperature, this effect was not due to a trade-off between
egg size and number. Temperature-dependent egg sizes even persisted within individuals: when females were transferred to a
cooler (warmer) environment, they laid third-clutch eggs that were larger (smaller) than their first-clutch eggs. The fitness
consequences of these temperature-mediated egg sizes were further investigated in two laboratory experiments. Neither egg
and pre-adult survivorship nor larval growth rate were maximized, nor was development time minimized, at the ambient temperature
corresponding to the mother's temperature environment. This does not support the beneficial acclimation hypothesis. Instead,
this study yielded some, but by no means conclusive indications of best performance by offspring from eggs laid at intermediate
temperatures, weakly supporting the optimal temperature hypothesis. In one experiment the smaller eggs laid at 24 °C had reduced
survivorship at all ambient temperatures tested. Smaller eggs thus generally performed poorly. The most parsimonious interpretation
of these results is that temperature-mediated variation in egg size is a maternal physiological response (perhaps even a constraint)
of unclear adaptive value.

Observations on mass atresia and skipped spawning in northern Atlantic cod, from Smith Sound, Newfoundland 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Atlantic cod Gadus morhua were collected from Smith Sound, Newfoundland in January 1999. Visual examination of females (n=150) and males (n=126) revealed that some large fish (42–79 cm) had underdeveloped gonads. Histological examination of underdeveloped ovaries indicated that the majority of these females were undergoing mass resorption of oocytes and would not have spawned in 1999. Fish in this condition included females that were aborting their first attempt at maturation and females that had spawned the previous year but were failing to re-ripen. Somatic and liver condition were significantly lower (P<0·05) for fish undergoing mass oocyte resorption than ripening females, suggesting that the interruption in the maturation cycle may have been related to insufficient nutrient storage. In males, testes of some adult fish were considered to be non-reproductive as they showed no signs of ripening and probably would not have spawned in 1999. Liver condition was significantly higher (P<0·05) for non-reproductive males than those that were ripening. Disruptions in male and female reproductive cycles may also have been related to water temperatures that were too cold (0–0·5° C) for successful gamete development. Immature gametes (perinucleolar oocytes in females; spermatogonia in males) showed no signs of breakdown in non-reproductive individuals, suggesting that they retained the potential to develop and spawn gametes in 2000. 相似文献

The fat content of muscle, liver and eggs of vendace (Coregonus albula L.) were measured during the maturation of ovaries in summer. The fat content of eggs was at its highest in July and that of muscle in August during the optimal feeding season. Significant differences were not found in fat content between lakes Suvasvesi and Southern-Kallavesi in central Finland. There were no essential differences in fatty acid composition between muscle, liver and eggs of Lake Suvasvesi vendace. During the last month before spawning in October the gross energy and fat contents of eggs decreased in Lake Suvasvesi vendace. The fat and vitamin C contents of muscle as well as the liver index of females decreased during this time also. In males the corresponding decrease did not occur, indicating that spawning is a greater stress for females than for males. The egg quality and condition of Lake Inarijärvi vendace were about the same as those of Lake Suvasvesi vendace. The unfavourable conditions of Lake Inarijärvi, located in northern Finland, are reflected in the size of ovaries, which is known to be smaller (gonadosomatic index < 20%) than in Lake Suvasvesi (GSI 26–27%). Vendace, then, maintain the quality of eggs at the expense of their number. 相似文献

1. For many fish species, survival during early life stages is linked to the size and energetic condition of females prior to reproduction. For example, females in good energetic condition are often more fecund and produce larger eggs and offspring than those in poor condition. 2. We measured the characteristics of female yellow perch (Perca flavescens) that may influence annual population fluctuations. From 2005 to 2007, we measured spatial variation in female reproductive traits, such as age, length, mass and energy density (J g?1) of somatic tissues and ovaries among four spawning aggregations of yellow perch in western and central Lake Erie. 3. Maternal traits, such as somatic energy density and spawner age distribution, differed between the western and central basin, whereas reproductive traits, such as fecundity and ovarian energy density, differed across years. 4. To understand the implications of observed differences in demographic rates (growth and mortality rates) between basins, we developed a deterministic model to simulate the total egg production in the western and central basins under different scenarios of fishing mortality. 5. High growth rates and low mortality rates combined to produce higher modelled estimates of total egg production in the central than in the western basin, and a larger proportion of eggs were produced by old age classes in the central basin than in the western basin. 6. Our results demonstrate that changing harvest levels for populations with different demographic rates can influence total reproductive output through complex interactions between age‐specific mortality, growth and size‐specific fecundity, which has implications for the population dynamics of yellow perch and related species across a broad geographic range. 相似文献
