Garole, a prolific small sized sheep breed of India was introduced in the Mutton Project of the Institute during 1997 to explore the possibility of incorporating fecundity gene into Malpura (M) sheep of semi-arid region of Rajasthan. The data on reproduction and production traits of M and Garole × Malpura (GM) half-breds was used in the study to assess the improvement in evolved crossbred stock. The overall percent gain in prolificacy in GM was 52.38, which increased to 75.73 in third parity. The GM compared to M ewes also weaned more lambs per ewe lambed (1 versus 1.41). The lambing rate averaged 91.75 and 148.21% in M and GM ewes, respectively. The twin lambing percentage was only 4.71% in M flock while; it reached up to 51.10% in GM. Moreover, 5.72% of GM ewes produced triplets also. The genetic group non-significantly affect ewe efficiency (EE), but GM produced 3.3% more total lambs weight per ewe lambed at weaning and 6.15% more total lamb weight per ewe lambed at 6-month of age. The body weights at different ages of GM half-breds were lower (P < 0.01) compared to contemporary M lambs. The parity of ewes significantly affects body weight from birth weight to 12-month of age. The survivability of GM half-breds was almost at par with the local M sheep. Results revealed that the fecundity genes responsible for increasing prolificacy have been incorporated into the GM and it might prove a valuable germplasm towards evolving a new prolific strain of sheep. The crossing of Garole with M increased the ewe efficiency.  相似文献

Effects of early weaning, lactation, and day-of-year lambing on the ability of Polypay ewes to rebreed following winter and summer lambings were evaluated. Winter lambing ewes did not successfully rebreed while lactating. However, when winter-born lambs were weaned at 31 days postpartum, more ewes rebred and produced summer lambs (35.7%) than when lambs were weaned at 41 days postpartum (23.6%). Ewes that lambed during the early part of the winter lambing period had an advantage over later lambing ewes in the percentage which subsequently lambed the following summer. This was apparently the result of a difference in length of breeding exposure rather than a higher fertility rate during the early part of the breeding period. When summer lambing ewes were rebred during the early part of the summer breeding period (late summer to early fall), stress associated with lactation did not affect subsequent winter lambing performance. Summer lambing ewes belonging to a late weaning (80 days) treatment group did not differ (P>0.05) from those belonging to an early weaning (31 days) treatment group in winter fertility, prolificacy, day-of-year lambing or lambing interval.  相似文献

A comparison was made of the relative effectiveness of subcutaneous ear implants containing 2 mg Norgestomet or vagnial pessaries containing 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) to induce estrus and conception in dry anestrous ewes. Groups of ewes were treated with one of the two progestogens for 14 d, and 500 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) was administered intramuscularly at the time of progestogen withdrawal. No significant differences in estrus induction, pregnancy rate or number of lambs born per ewe lambing were observed. Ewes treated with Norgestomet had 96% estrus, 60% pregnancy rate and 1.4 lambs per ewe lambing. Comparably, ewes treated with MAP had 94% estrus, 65% pregnancy rate and 1.7 lambs per ewe lambing. Norgestomet implants compared favorably with MAP pessaries for estrus induction and breeding of commercial, dry anestrous ewes.  相似文献

Rambouillet sheep were selected for high or low reproductive rate based on an index of reproductive rate, reproductive INDEX = dam's total lifetime lambs born/(age in years-1). Selected ewes were first born in 1969. A random bred control line was established from the remaining foundation ewes with the first ewes born in 1973. Genetic variances were estimated with REML procedures for reproductive index and number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing. Heritability of reproductive index was 0.26. Heritability for number of lambs born were 0.11 and 0.12 and for number of lambs weaned were 0.04 and 0.04 per ewe exposed for breeding and per ewe lambing, respectively. Breeding values for the reproductive index were estimated using the full animal model (BLUP) with the complete numerator relationship matrix on reproductive index, with fixed effect of year of birth of ewe and breeding values for number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing, estimated with the fixed effects of year of birth of ewe and age of ewe and the random effect of permanent environmental effect among repeated lambing records. Genetic change was estimated as the regression of breeding value for reproductive index and number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing on year of birth of the ewe. High and low lines both responded to selection for reproductive index as compared to the control line (P<0.01). The high line increased at a rate of b = 0.0134 ± 0.0006 reproductive index units and the low line decreased at a rate of b = − 0.0098 ± 0.0005 reproductive index units per year. Response to selection for reproductive index resulted in b = − 0.0074 ± 0.0007 and b = 0.0163 ± 0.0006 lambs per ewe exposed for breeding, and b = − 0.0041 ± 0.0002 and b = 0.0075 ± 0.0002 lambs weaned per ewe exposed for breeding in the low and high lines, respectively. There was a greater response to selection in the high line compared to the low line. These results indicated that the reproductive index did respond to selection.  相似文献

The effect of dose of pregnant mares' serum gonadotropin (PMSG) on the reproductive performance of adult ewes and ewe lambs and lamb survival at birth after treatment with fluorogestone acetate (FGA)-impregnated intravaginal sponges and PMSG (250 IU or 500 IU) to synchronize estrus was evaluated. Ewes were exposed to rams for breeding at the synchronized and subsequent estrous cycles. The flock, comprised of three synthetic strains and two control breeds, was maintained in a controlled environment and exposed to an artificial light regimen which alternated at 4-mo intervals from 16h of light daily to 9h of light daily. Trials were conducted during January, May and September at the end of a 9-h daylength cycle. Adult ewes were bred in May and 8 mo later in January. Ewe lambs were bred in September at 6.5 to 7.5 mo of age. The overall reproductive performance of the adult ewes was similar at the two breedings: fertility approximately 90%, prolificacy approximately 2.7, fecundity approximately 240% and lambs born alive approximately 2.4. Dosage of PMSG had no effect. Reproductive performance of ewe lambs was lower and there was a strain x treatment interaction, suggesting greater variability in response. The results indicate there is no advantage to using a higher dose of PMSG in ewes with a natural relatively high fecundity. Moreover, the use of the artificial photoperiod appears to overcome the natural seasonal variation in reproductive performance.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of age and breed on the reproductive performance and lamb output of crossbred hill ewes relative to purebred Scottish Blackface (BF). BF ewes were compared alongside Swaledale (SW) × BF, North Country Cheviot (CH) × BF, Lleyn (LL) × BF and Texel (T) × BF ewes on six commercial hill farms across Northern Ireland, on which all the ewes were born and reared. Ewes were mated to a range of sire breeds, balanced across breeds, for up to five successive breeding seasons. Mature live weight of adult BF, SW × BF, CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF ewes was 52.8, 54.9, 60.3, 55.6 and 58.6 kg (P < 0.001), respectively. Compared with the pure BF, the number of lambs born per ewe lambed was higher with LL × BF and SW × BF (P < 0.05), whereas the number of lambs weaned per ewe lambed was greater for LL × BF and T × BF (P < 0.01). Total litter weight at birth of all the crossbred ewes was heavier (P < 0.01) than the pure BF, except in primiparous 2-year-old ewes. Lambs born to CH × BF and T × BF dams were 0.24 to 0.35 kg heavier at birth (P < 0.01) than the other ewe breeds, whereas lambs born to CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF dams were, on average, 1.7, 1.3 and 1.5 kg, respectively, heavier (P < 0.01) at weaning than those from BF dams due to their higher (P < 0.05) average daily gain. Compared with the pure BF, total weaned lamb output per ewe lambed was 3.7, 4.8, 6.7 and 5.4 kg heavier (P < 0.05) for SW × BF, CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF, respectively. However, as a result of the heavier live weight of the crossbred ewes, production efficiency (lamb output per kilogram live weight (W) and lamb output per kilogram metabolic live weight (W0.75)) was higher (P < 0.001) for LL × BF ewes only. For all ewe breeds, litter size at birth per ewe lambed, total lamb birth weight per ewe lambed and litter size at weaning increased (P < 0.001) with age up to 5 years, but decreased in 6-year-old ewes. Average lamb weaning weight and total weaned lamb output per ewe lambed increased (P < 0.001) with age up to 4 years . Production efficiency of the 6-year-old ewes was lower (P < 0.01) than the younger ewes. This study shows that adopting a flock replacement policy based on crossing BF ewes with LL, SW, T and CH sires can lead to significant improvements in the productivity of hill flocks.  相似文献

The effects of rapid weight gain to puberty on reproduction, mammary development and milk production in ewes lambing at 13 mo of age were investigated on three trials. A total of 64 Dorset and 93 Suffolk ewe lambs were weaned at 42 d of age and their mean weight was 16 kg. These ewes were assigned, within breed groups, to either a finishing diet or a growing diet. Onset of puberty was determined by daily checks for estrus and ewes were bred beginning at 7 mo of age. In Trial 2, mammary gland development was determined in eight Suffolk ewes from each diet. Ewes on the finishing diet were younger at puberty than those on the growing diet (199 vs 206 d, P<0.05) but required more services per conception (1.3 vs 1.1, P<0.05). Dietary conception rate and lambing rate means were similar. Mean 4-h milk yield was lower (P<0.10) for ewes on the finishing diet (283 g) than for those on the growing diet (310 g). Mammary gland fat pad area was higher (P<0.05) for ewes on the finishing diet compared with those fed for growth. Gross and adjusted duct areas were higher in ewes on the growing diet, but differences were not significant. At puberty, negative correlation coefficients for milk yield with performance traits were as follows: daily weight gain, -0.184 (P<0.08); weight-to-height ratio -0.262 (P<0.01); body condition score, -0.189 (P<0.07); and body weight, -0.212 (P<0.05). Results of this study indicate that rapid weight gain to puberty impairs mammary gland development and milk production in ewe lambs.  相似文献

Three groups of ewe lambs born in May (experiment 1; n=211) or April (experiment 2; n=174) were used to evaluate the effects of selection line and induction of estrus on pregnancy rate. Experiment 1 was a single factor experiment with induction of estrus as the main effect. In early December, May-born Targhee (n=82) and Rambouillet x Targhee (n=129) ewes were randomly assigned within body weight to one of two treatment groups: control or induction of estrus. Experiment 2 was designed in a 2x2 factorial array with the main effects of induction of estrus or selection line. In early November, April-born Targhee lambs (n=174) from two distinct selection lines were either treated as controls or received an estrus induction treatment. The two lines included an unselected control line of randomly bred ewes and a line that had been selected since 1976, based on the weight of lamb weaned. Ewes from each line were randomly assigned within body weight to one of the treatment groups. In experiments 1 and 2, estrus was induced using MAP pessaries. Pessaries were inserted for 12 days. At the time of pessary removal, ewe lambs received 400 IU eCG i.m. All ewe lambs were bred in multi-sire pens. Pregnancy rate and fetal numbers were determined either by lambing data or real-time ultrasound. Body weight, lambing date and fetal numbers were analyzed by GLM, and remaining variables were analyzed by CATMOD. For experiment 1, estrus induction increased (P<0.01) pregnancy rates (61 versus 31%) and number of fetuses estimated by real-time ultrasound (79 versus 35%) compared to control ewe lambs. Pregnancy rate and fetal number were increased (P<0.01) for the 1st year compared to the 2nd year. For experiment 2, estrus induction tended to increase (P<0.07) pregnancy rate, and pregnancy rate differed (P<0.01) between selection lines. Estrus induction increased (P<0.05) fetal numbers (0.96) compared to controls (0.77). Fetal numbers were greater (P<0.01) for the selected line (1.06) compared to random bred controls (0.67). Average date of lambing was earlier in both experiments for the estrus-induced ewe lambs compared to controls. These results indicate that induction of estrus can be recommended if increased reproduction is desired for ewe lambs.  相似文献

Fifteen pinealectomized and 15 unoperated ewes were exposed to constant light for 3 weeks before and 10 weeks after lambing. Fourteen pinealectomized and 15 unoperated ewes were allowed to lamb outdoors. Five ewe lambs born in constant light to the 2 groups of dams were pinealectomized at 10 weeks of age. Ewes and lambs were then returned to the field. Puberty (determined by weekly progesterone analysis) was significantly delayed (P less than 0.05) in the pinealectomized ewe lambs. Median pubertal age in pineal-intact ewe lambs was 37 weeks compared to 49 weeks in pinealectomized lambs. Constant light during the first 10 weeks of life had no effect upon puberty onset nor did the pineal status of the dam. Control lambs entered seasonal anoestrus at the time pinealectomized ewe lambs were entering puberty. Pinealectomized lambs entered anoestrus at the same time as control lambs were beginning their second breeding season. These results confirm a key role of pineal-mediated hormonal signals in the control of puberty in the sheep.  相似文献

A study was carried out on six hill farms, located in the main hill regions of Northern Ireland, over three breeding seasons to investigate the effect of sire breed on ewe dystocia, lamb survival and weaned lamb output. On each farm, groups of 26 to 40 purebred Scottish Blackface ewes (n = 3174) were crossed with Blackface, Swaledale, North Country Cheviot, Lleyn and Texel sires by natural service (year 1) and artificial insemination (years 2 and 3). Each of the mating groups was initially balanced for ewe age, live weight and condition score, and a total of 15 sires of each breed were used over the 3 years. In total, 2272 ewes were recorded at lambing, producing 3451 lambs, over the 3 years. Sire breed had a significant effect (P < 0.001) on lamb birth weight with Blackface and Swaledale the lowest and Texel the highest. The proportion of ewes with dystocia was higher with Texel sires compared with Lleyn, Swaledale and Blackface sires (P < 0.05). Ewes mated to Cheviot sires had more dystocia than those mated to Blackface and Swaledale sires (P < 0.05), while ewes mated to Lleyn sire breed had more dystocia (P < 0.05) than those mated to Blackface sire breed. Most of the incidence of dystocia was attributable to increased lamb birth weight (P < 0.001), and some to litter size (P < 0.05). Swaledale, Cheviot, Lleyn and Texel sire breeds increased the incidence of malpresentations (P < 0.05). Lamb live weight at weaning was higher with Texel- and Cheviot- and Lleyn-sired lambs compared with Blackface- and Swaledale-sired lambs (P < 0.01). The level of lamb mortality at birth was not affected by sire breed. However, lamb mortality at weaning was lower for Lleyn-sired lambs compared with the other lamb genotypes (P < 0.05). These results indicate that the use of sires from larger breeds, such as Lleyn and Texel, within the Blackface ewe flocks can increase lamb output, with no apparent detrimental effects on lamb mortality or ewe survival, but increased assistance at lambing will be required.  相似文献

Each of sixty Rasa aragonesa ewes received two embryos on Days 2-3 of the estrous cycle (Day 0=estrus) from 27 donors of the same breed that were superovulated with pFSH. The influence of several variables on fertility and prolificacy after transfer was studied by discriminant analysis. Our results showed that the main variables contributing to higher fertility were: in the donor-recipient couple, degree of estrus synchrony between them (better if donors were in estrus before recipients); in recipients, interval from FGA withdrawal to estrus onset, prolificacy in the previous lambing, age (all, better if inferior to the mean) and interval from the previous lambing (better if superior to the mean); in donors, ovulation rate (better if lower than the mean); and in embryos, developmental stage (better if superior to the mean). Likewise, the main variables contributing to higher prolificacy were: in donors, body condition score (better if higher than the mean) and weight (better if inferior to the mean); and in recipients, plasma progesterone concentration at transfer (better if inferior to the mean). The percentage of ewes correctly classified as lambing or not was 71.7% (P<0.01), and 72.5% of the ewes were correctly classified as having one or two lambs (P<0.05). Whether the criteria we have found for optimum results after transfer are applicable or not to conditions other than ours will need to be confirmed.  相似文献

The objectives were to evaluate, in anestrous ewes, the effectiveness of a CIDR-G device (0.3 g progesterone) administered for 5 d to induce estrus; and FSH (Folltropin; 55 mg NIH-FSH-P1 equivalent) in saline:propylene glycol (1:4) 24 h before insert removal (Day 0), to increase ovulation rate and prolificacy. Ewes of mixed breeding were assigned at random to 3 treatments: control (C; n = 125), 5 d progesterone (P5; n = 257) and 5 d progesterone plus FSH (P5F; n = 271). Intact rams were joined at insert removal and ewes were observed every 24 h for 3 d. On Day 14, the ovulation rates of all ewes detected in estrus in the treated groups were determined using transrectal ultrasonography. Rams were removed on Day 26 to 31. Ewes were examined for pregnancy then, and again 20 to 25 d later to detect ewes that conceived to the second service period. Percentage of ewes marked by rams was higher in progesterone-treated (77%) than in C (20%; P < 0.01), but did not differ between P5 and P5F. The ovulation rate (1.95+/-0.04) did not differ due to FSH. Conception (68%) and pregnancy (52%) rates were higher in progesterone-treated (P < 0.01) than in C (0%) ewes. Estrous response varied quadratically with time after ram introduction, and the conception rate varied quadratically with the time of observation of onset of estrus. Over two service periods more progesterone-treated than C ewes lambed (65 vs 45%; P < 0.01). Lambs born per ewe exposed (0.7+/-0.1, 1.0+/-0.1, and 1.1+/-0.1 for C, P5 and P5F, respectively) was increased by progesterone (P < 0.05). Litter size to the first service period (1.59+/-0.04) and overall (1.54+/-0.03) did not differ among treatment groups. FSH-treated ewes tended to have more lambs (1.67+/-0.1) than did ewes receiving progesterone alone (1.5+/-0.1; P = 0.06) and than did ewes lambing to the second service period (1.5+/-0.1; P = 0.06). In summary, a 5-d progesterone pre-treatment of anestrous ewes induced estrous cycles and increased the pregnancy rates. A single injection of FSH only tended to increase litter size.  相似文献

The reproductive performance (fertility, prolificacy and fecundity of totally confined sheep in a controlled breeding program at the Animal Research Centre (ARC) was analyzed to evaluate the effect of pregnant mares' serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) on ewes synchronized for estrus with fluorogestone acetate (FGA). PMSG did not significantly enhance reproductive performance. Fertility for ewes receiving 500 IU PMSG was 57% and for ewes not receiving PMSG it was 47%. Corresponding values for prolificacy were 2.4 and 2.2, and for fecundity, 144 and 103%. The reproductive performance was not affected by any of the other factors (flock, strain, lighting regime, ram age or reproductive status of the ewe) indigenous to the controlled breeding program for sheep housed in total confinement.  相似文献

Limited research has suggested that higher lambing densities increase interference from foreign ewes at lambing which disrupts the ewe-lamb bond and compromises lamb survival. This may be particularly evident in mobs of twin-bearing ewes compared to single-bearing ewes because a greater number of lambs are born per day. Therefore, we hypothesised that; (i) decreasing the mob size of ewes at lambing has a greater impact on the survival of twin-born lambs than single-born lambs; (ii) the relationship between mob size and lamb survival can be explained by differences in the rate of interaction with foreign ewes and lambs at lambing; and (iii) ewes will utilise a limited area of the paddock at lambing and thus lambing density will be defined by the distribution of ewes in the paddock rather than the paddock area. Merino ewes were allocated into a 2×2 factorial combination of ewe pregnancy status (single- or twin-bearing) and mob size (high (n=130 ewes) or low (n=50 ewes)) on day 140 from the start of joining. Each treatment had two replicates excepting the low mob size for twins which had a third replicate. Ewes lambed at a stocking rate of 11 ewes/ha. Feed-on-offer during lambing exceeded 2400 kg dry matter (DM)/ha. Ewe-lamb behaviour was observed and dead lambs were autopsied over 11 days during the peak of lambing. The distribution of ewes in each paddock was recorded every 2 h during daylight hours by counting the number of ewes occupying 2500 m2 grids. The proportion of ewes and their newborn progeny which interacted with foreign ewes at lambing did not differ between the high and low mob sizes for single- (24.9% v. 20.8%) or twin-bearing ewes (14.3% v. 19.6%; P=0.74). Similarly, interaction with foreign lambs did not differ between the high and low mob sizes for single- (14.5% v. 25.2%) and twin-bearing ewes (34.5% v. 26.4%; P=0.44). The distribution of ewes within the paddock did not differ between treatments (P=0.95). On average, single-bearing ewes which lambed at the high and low mob sizes occupied 34% and 36% of the paddock during daylight hours, and the corresponding values for twin-bearing ewes were 40% and 43%. Survival of twin-born lambs was lower than single-born lambs (75.3% v. 87.9%; P<0.01), however, lamb survival was not influenced by mob size regardless of birth type. These results suggest that higher mob sizes may not compromise lamb survival when feed-on-offer during lambing exceeds 2400 kg DM/ha.  相似文献

This study was conducted on 110 cross-bred Hisardale x Nali ewes. The ewes were divided into two groups: one group was treated with 2 ml of polyandroalbumin subcutaneously (s.c.) twice at an interval of 28 d, with breeding rams introduced 28 d after the second injection of the drug. The second group served as the untreated controls. Of the 55 ewes in each group, 52 were mated during the 40 d breeding period. The occurance of estrus and estrous cycle length were the same in the two groups. Fortysix ewes in the treated group and 47 ewes in the control group lambed, producing 55 and 47 lambs, respectively. In the treated group, the lambing rate, fecundity and fertility were 100, 96.36 and 88.46%, while these values for the control group were 85.45, 83.64 and 90.38%. Prolificity rates were 1.15 and 0.98 for the treated and control group, respectively.  相似文献

Economic weights of production and functional traits were estimated for the dual-purpose sheep breeds Romney (RY), Merinolandschaf (ML), Romanov (RV) and Sumavska (SA). A bio-economic computer model simulating the profit function for production systems with one lambing per year was used for the calculations. First, marginal economic values were calculated which were defined as partial derivatives of the profit function with respect to the average level for each trait. Applying gene-flow methodology, absolute and relative economic weights for direct and maternal components of the traits were then estimated for pure-bred production systems and systems which included partial terminal cross-breeding. The following traits were evaluated: birth weight, daily gain till weaning and during rearing, mature weight, dressing percentage, fleece weight, conception rate of ewe lambs and ewes, litter size at lambing (total number of lambs born per ewe lambing), survival rate of lambs at birth and till weaning and productive lifetime of ewes. Standardized economic weights were calculated as the product of the economic weight and the genetic standard deviation of each trait or trait component. The total economic importance was defined as the sum of the absolute (not taking into account the sign) standardized economic weights over all traits and trait components, and relative economic weights were then computed as the standardized economic weights expressed as percentages of total economic importance. The direct components of survival rate at birth and till weaning, the direct component of daily gain till weaning and litter size had the highest relative economic weights (greater than 10%) in pure-bred systems in all four breeds. In ML and RV, the maternal component of lamb survival rate till weaning also had a relative economic weight exceeding 10%. In systems with partial terminal cross-breeding for all four breeds, relative economic weights of maternal traits and trait components were slightly larger than in pure-bred production systems, particularly for litter size. Based upon comparison of relative economic weights of traits among breeds, separate breeding goals for RY and RV are recommended, whereas a common breeding goal is deemed appropriate for ML and SA.  相似文献

Two ways of reducing the cost of replacements are increasing litter size and number of litters produced; thus, the total weight of lamb carcass output per ewe lifetime. The effects of ewe genotype on the performance of ewes lambing at 1 year and of their progeny to slaughter, and the effect of age at first joining (7 or 19 months) on BW at ~19 months and survival to joining at 19 months were evaluated over two consecutive years, using 460 ewe lambs from three genotypes: Belclare (Bel), Suffolk × Belclare (Suf × Bel) and ≥ 75% Suffolk ancestry (Suf75). Lambs from the three genotypes were at a similar proportion of mature BW and half of the lambs, within genotype, were allocated to be joined for the first time at 7 or 19 months. The ewe lambs were managed in a grass-based rotational-grazing system, except when housed from December to March on a grass silage-based diet. Belclare ewes had larger litters (P < 0.001), reared more lambs per ewe joined (P < 0.01), were lighter at lambing and at 19 months (P < 0.01), were of smaller body size at 19 months (P < 0.001) and their progeny were lighter at weaning (P < 0.05) relative to Suf75 genotype; the Suf × Bel ewes were intermediate for most traits but had a significantly lower litter size (P < 0.05) than Bel ewes. Progeny from Suf × Bel ewes were 17 days younger at slaughter (P < 0.01) relative to those from Bel ewes. Ewe genotype had no effect (P > 0.05) on lamb mortality (born dead, total mortality to weaning), lambing assistance, number of ewes that failed to lamb, or on ewe survival to 19 months of age. Increasing ewe BW at joining increased the probability (P < 0.001) of rearing at least one lamb and this effect was consistent across genotypes. There were significant relationships (P < 0.001) between ewe BW at lambing and lamb BW at birth and at weaning of 0.053 (SE 0.0089) kg and 0.29 (SE 0.049) kg, respectively. Ewes that lambed at 1 year were 2 kg lighter (P < 0.001) at 19 months of age and had a smaller body size (P < 0.01) relative to those not joined. It is concluded that ewe genotype had a significant effect on number of lambs reared, and thus lamb carcass output. Whilst lambing at 1 year reduced BW by 2 kg when joined at 19 months, it did not affect ewe survival to that stage.  相似文献

Rasa Aragonesa ewes (n = 89) received 2 embryos on Day 6 of the estrous cycle (Day 0 = estrus) from 46 donors of the same breed that had been superovulated with FSH-p. The influence of several variables on fertility and prolificacy after transfer was studied by discriminant analysis. Our results showed that the main variables that contributed to a high fertility rate were the degree of synchrony (better outcome if donors come into estrus later than the recipients); Fluorogestone acetate (FGA) to estrus interval and interval from previous lambing in the recipients, ovulation rate of the donors and recipients (better if superior to the mean); prolificacy of recipients in the previous lambing; and difference in developmental stage of the pair of transferred embryos (better if inferior to the mean). The main variables affecting prolificacy were the ovulation rate and weight of the donors and progesterone concentrations of the recipients (better if lower than the mean); age of the donors and difference in progesterone concentrations between donors minus those of the recipients (better if higher than the mean). The percentage of ewes correctly classified into lambing or not lambing status was 73% (P < 0.001) and that of the ewes correctly classified as lambing 1 or 2 lambs was 81.8% (P < 0.001). Whether or not the criteria we have established for optimum transfer results are applicable to conditions other than our own still needs to be confirmed.  相似文献

The aim was to examine the effect of ovulation of aged follicles on embryo quality and fertility in ewes. In Experiment 1, ewes (n = 39) received a prostaglandin analogue on Day 6 of the cycle and then received either a progestagen sponge from Day 6 to 20 after estrus (Single sponge) or a progestagen sponge on Day 6 that was replaced on Day 11 and 16 and removed on Day 20 (Multiple sponges). In a subgroup of ewes, the growth of ovarian follicles was characterised using ultrasonography. Fertile rams were introduced 48 hours after sponge withdrawal; we slaughtered the ewes on Day 5 of pregnancy and recovered the embryos. The mean age of the ovulatory follicles was greater in ewes that received a single sponge compared with multiple sponges (8.7+/-0.8 days, range 4 to 14, versus 4.5+/-0.7 days, range 3 to 6; P<0.05). However, the groups did not differ (P>0.05) in ovulation rate (2.4+/-0.3 corporal lutea per ewe) or the proportion of good quality embryos recovered (71 to 82%; developed to the early morula stage or further). In Experiment 2, ewes (570 in total) received treatments similar to those in Experiment 1 but were kept until lambing. Ewes that received a single sponge came into heat earlier (P<0.05) than those that received multiple sponges, but > or = 97% of ewes in all groups (P>0.05) were bred by 48 to 72 hours after ram introduction. There was no difference (P>0.05) between groups for the proportion of ewes that lambed to first service (80 to 86%) or the number of lambs per ewe (1.94+/-0.08 lambs). We conclude that when luteolysis occurs at the beginning of progestagen synchronisation, ewes will ovulate aged follicles, but that compared to shorter duration follicles, these follicles produce oocytes that are equally competent to be fertilised and develop into good quality embryos and full-term lambs.  相似文献

Peri-parturient worm egg counts were compared in 395 Merino ewes bred for either increased (IRH) or decreased (DRH) resistance to Haemonchus contortus, or from an unselected control flock (CH). Following a 10 month period with no anthelmintic treatment, a rise in egg counts began about 4 weeks before parturition and continued into lactation. At all stages, egg counts were significantly lower in IRH ewes, even those failing to conceive. Before lambing, IRH ewes averaged 263 epg, compared with 1113 epg in CH and 1618 epg in DRH ewes. After 2 weeks of lambing, lactating ewes averaged 1050, 2173 and 3708 epg, respectively, in the three lines. At the end of lambing, egg counts had increased to 1645, 3959 and 4124 epg, respectively. Counts appeared to have peaked in IRH ewes but not in DRH ewes. Ewes with twins had higher counts than those with singles, and ewes suckling lambs had higher counts than those losing lambs. No significant variation was associated with age of ewe (2-7 years). Although there were several nematode species present, the results suggest that, in comparison with DRH ewes, IRH ewes were particularly effective in reducing pasture contamination with H. contortus, both before and during the peri-parturient period.  相似文献
