Precipitation is projected to change intensity and seasonal regime under current global projections. However, little is known about how seasonal precipitation changes will affect soil respiration, especially in seasonally dry tropical forests. In a seasonally dry tropical forest in South China, we conducted a precipitation manipulation experiment to simulate a delayed wet season (DW) and a wetter wet season (WW) over a three‐year period. In DW, we reduced 60% throughfall in April and May to delay the onset of the wet season and irrigated the same amount water into the plots in October and November to extend the end of the wet season. In WW, we irrigated 25% annual precipitation into plots in July and August. A control treatment (CT) receiving ambient precipitation was also established. Compared with CT, DW significantly increased soil moisture by 54% during October to November, and by 30% during December to April. The treatment of WW did not significantly affect monthly measured soil moisture. In 2015, DW significantly increased leaf area index and soil microbial biomass but decreased fine root biomass. In contrast, WW significantly decreased fine root biomass and forest floor litter stocks. Soil respiration was not affected by DW, which could be attributed to the increased microbial biomass offsetting the decrease in fine root biomass. In contrast, WW significantly increased soil respiration from 3.40 to 3.90 μmol m?2 s?1 in the third year, mainly due to the increased litter decomposition and soil pH (from 4.48 to 4.68). The present study suggests that both a delayed wet season and a wetter wet season will have significant impacts on soil respiration‐associated ecosystem components. However, the ecosystem components can respond in different directions to the same change in precipitation, which ultimately affected soil respiration.  相似文献

  • 1 We used biovolume as a simple non-destructive means for estimating biomass for several tubificid and chironomid species. Biovolumes were determined by treating the organisms as cylinders and measuring body lengths and diameters; estimates were verified by measuring the displacement of water by live organisms in a 5-ml burette. In addition, factors were determined for the conversion of biovolume (V) into wet weight (WW), dry weight (DW) and ash-free dry weight (AFDW).
  • 2 For six tubificid species, regression functions between the diameter of segment XI (D11) and the biovolume enabled the prediction of any biovolume merely by measuring D11. This method, however, underestimated biovolumes of Branchiura sowerbyi by 38–47% compared with burette measurements. This difference is largely attributable to the mountant we used during identification.
  • 3 For ten chironomid species a linear relation was found between body length and the diameter of abdominal segment 5. The biovolume of Chironomus muratensis was underestimated by an average of 12% compared with burette measurements.
  • 4 Specific gravity (WW:V) amounted to 1.07 and 1.05, DW:WW ratios were 0.20 and 0.142 and AFDW:WW ratios were 0.182 and 0.129 for Oligochaeta and Chironomidae, respectively.
  • 5 The biovolume method is not yet very accurate for Oligochaeta, but to our knowledge, it is the only practical method that can be used in natural polyspecific communities that need to be treated with elucidating media for identification. For those Chironomidae that need no elucidation for identification, this method is time saving and just as accurate as the direct body shape—biomass method.

Seasonal variations in Fulton’s condition factor (K) and the length–weight relationship (LWR) were investigated for Capoeta sieboldii in the upper Çoruh River (Turkey) from March 2000 to February 2001. There was a slight seasonal variation in condition, with generally lower values in summer and winter, and higher values in autumn. LWR was calculated as W = 0.016 × L2.933, W = 0.014 ×L3.001, and W = 0.009 × L3.118 for males, females, and juveniles, respectively.  相似文献

The life history characteristics of Aristotle’s catfish, Silurus aristotelis (Agassiz 1856) were studied in Lake Pamvotis (northwestern Greece). Samples were collected on a monthly basis using gillnets, trammel‐nets and traps. Total lengths ranged from 11.1 to 36.7 cm. Sex ratio was biased toward females (F : M = 1.8 : 1) and was statistically different from unity (χ2 = 46.94, P < 0.001). Spawning is from April to June. The relationship between total length and total weight showed positive allometric growth for males (TW = 0.0035 × TL3.21, r2 = 0.93, n = 198, P < 0.001) and females (TW = 0.0066 × TL3.02, r2 = 0.95, n = 363, P < 0.001). Age was determined on the annual growth marks formed on the spine of the pectoral fin. Based on cross‐section readings of the spine, lifespan of the Aristotle’s catfish was 5 years. Age classes 1 and 2 dominated the catches (39.1 and 40.0% of the total sample, respectively). Back‐calculated lengths at age showed a rapid increase in fish size during the first year of life, reaching 61.1% of maximum attainable length, and a declining growth rate thereafter. Growth parameters were calculated as L = 36.12 cm, K = 0.37 year?1, t0 = ?0.76 year based on the observed lengths at age and as L = 28.19 cm, K = 0.53 year?1, t0 = ?0.62 year based on the back‐calculated lengths at age. It seems that some of the life history traits (longevity, growth pattern, reproductive period) are influenced significantly by adverse effects of pollution and eutrophication on the lacustrine ecosystem.  相似文献

In order to update existing life history parameters, age and growth patterns were determined for Giant Kelpfish, Heterostichus rostratus sampled from nearshore kelp forest and estuary habitats in southern California (USA) from April 2012 through June 2015. Fish were collected by pole spear, beach seine, beam trawl, purse seine, and square enclosure. Using age‐at‐length data derived from otolith readings, Giant Kelpfish were found to have a relatively short life span with the largest examined fish reaching a maximum total length of 413 mm at an age of 5 years. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated for this species were: L = 45.1 cm, = 0.25, t0 = ?0.66. Standard length (SL, cm)‐total length (TL, cm) and total length (TL, cm)‐weight (W, g) relationships were described by the equations: SL = 0.90 TL – 1 and = 2.21 × 10?3 TL3.39, respectively. Wild juvenile Giant Kelpfish collected for this study had a higher growth rate than laboratory‐reared fish from a previous study.  相似文献

The study investigated the age, growth and sex ratio of Tinca tinca L., 1758 in Seyhan Dam Lake, Turkey and determined its first population structure data in the lake. Fishermen had introduced tinca into the lake between 2001 and 2002. A total of 1284 T. tinca (778 males and 506 females) were captured between January and December 2007 by gill nets of various mesh sizes. The sex ratio was 1 : 1.53 females to males. Total lengths and weights ranged from 12 to 29 cm and 27 to 403.3 g. Ages in both sexes ranged from 1 to 5 years. For all individuals the length‐weight relation and von Bertalanffy growth parameters were W = 0.063 × L2.51 (r = 0.981), and L = 50.86 cm, k = 0.112 year?1, to = ?1.551 year.  相似文献

This article identifies marginal land technically available for the production of energy crops in China, compares three models of yield prediction for Miscanthus × giganteus, Panicum virgatum L. (switchgrass), and Jatropha, and estimates their spatially specific yields and technical potential for 2017. Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis of land use maps estimated that 185 Mha of marginal land was technically available for energy crops in China without using areas currently used for food production. Modeled yields were projected for Miscanthus × giganteus, a GIS‐based Environmental Policy Integrated Climate model for switchgrass and Global Agro‐Ecological Zone model for Jatropha. GIS analysis and MiscanFor estimated more than 120 Mha marginal land was technically available for Miscanthus with a total potential of 1,761 dry weight metric million tonne (DW Mt)/year. A total of 284 DW Mt/year of switchgrass could be obtained from 30 Mha marginal land, with an average yield of 9.5 DW t ha?1 year?1. More than 35 Mha marginal land was technically available for Jatropha, delivering 9.7 Mt/year of Jatropha seed. The total technical potential from available marginal land was calculated as 31.7 EJ/year for Miscanthus, 5.1 EJ/year for switchgrass, and 0.13 EJ/year for Jatropha. A total technical bioenergy potential of 34.4 EJ/year was calculated by identifying best suited crop for each 1 km2 grid cell based on the highest energy value among the three crops. The results indicate that the technical potential per hectare of Jatropha is unable to compete with that of the other two crops in each grid cell. This modeling study provides planners with spatial overviews that demonstrate the potential of these crops and where biomass production could be potentially distributed in China which needs field trials to test model assumptions and build experience necessary to translate into practicality.  相似文献

This study investigated the age and growth of damselfish, Chromis notate, from Jeju Island in Korea. Samples were collected monthly by lift net from September 2013 to August 2014. Total lengths of the damselfish ranged from 6.4 to 15.3 cm. The relationship between total length and wet weight was WW = 0.0125TL3.1631 for females, and WW = 0.0091TL3.2769 for males. The slopes in the relationship between length and weight were not significantly different between sexes, but were significantly different in the intercepts. There were more female than male specimens (1.3:1). Age determination was conducted using the otoliths. Marginal increment (MI) declined in summer and winter, which suggests that two rings are formed each year. Ages of sampled individuals ranged from 1 to 5 years. Length‐at‐age data were fitted using the von Bertalanffy growth model. The estimated growth functions were Lt = 19.93 [1 ? exp?0.21 (t + 0.811)] total length and wet weight was females, and Lt = 16.47 [1 ? exp?0.32 (t + 0.499)] for males.  相似文献

In this study, the population structure, growth and reproduction characteristics of 414 chub (Leuciscus cephalus L., 1758) from the ?kizcetepeler dam lake were investigated monthly between January and December 2000. Age groups ranged between I and VI for this species in the reservoir, with the second and third year‐classes dominating. Sex ratio was 1 : 1.4 (M : F), corresponding to 58.4% males and 41.6% females. Females attained greater size and age than males. The largest female captured was 24.8 cm FL, the largest male was 24.1 cm FL, both age VI. The von Bertalanffy growth equations and length–weight relationships were found as: Lt = 28.89[1 ?e?0.224(t+1.55)] for females, Lt = 26.71[1 ? e?0.259(t+1.55)] for males; Wt = 347.386[1?e?0.224h (t+1.55)]2.86 for females, Wt =286.48[1?e?0.259 (t+1.55)]2.92 for males; W = 0.0227 × L2.87 for females and W = 0.0194 × L2.92 for males. Significant statistical differences in condition factors between age classes and sexes were not found (P > 0.05, t‐test). Spawning period of this species in the lake was between April and May.  相似文献

The overall goal of this study was to characterize the age, growth, condition, and total catch of lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens in a remnant population associated with a Lake Michigan, USA tributary. Lake sturgeon were captured (2008–2013) using large‐mesh (25.4 and 30.5 cm) and small‐mesh (6.4 and 7.6 cm) gill netting in Muskegon Lake (which connects the Muskegon River to Lake Michigan), and adults were captured with boat electrofishing in the Muskegon River. A total of 268 unique lake sturgeon (24.8–191.0 cm total length; <0.1–59.5 kg weight) were captured. Of these, 180 fish were aged using pectoral fin rays, representing 27 age cohorts and a mean age of 7.6 years. The weight–length relationship for lake sturgeon was log10 (W) = 3.446·log10 (L) ? 6.163 and the von Bertalanffy growth model was = 180.719 [1?e?0.093(+ 0.902)], where W was wet weight (kg), L was total length (cm), and t was age (years). Mean growth rate of juveniles (ages 3–6) recaptured in successive years was 8.6 cm/year and 558 g/year. Annual catch of adults during the spawning migration suggested that the number of spawners each year was low (i.e., probably <50 individuals in most years). Natural reproduction appeared to be occurring given the catch of juvenile lake sturgeon in Muskegon Lake. However, recovery of this remnant population is uncertain given the population age structure and low rate of adult recruitment during the study.  相似文献

Samples of Paralonchurus brasiliensis Steindachner, 1875 (627 females; no males) were taken monthly from June 1997 to May 1998 at the fishing pier of Cidreira – Rio Grande do Sul (30°08′S; 50°11′W) in southern Brazil. The fish were captured by sport fishermen using different sizes of hook‐and‐line. The reproductive period of P. brasiliensis extends from August to March, presenting greater activity from October to February. Females reach first maturation at 15.4 cm total length (TL). Of the 466 scales analyzed, one to six annuli were found. Growth annuli are formed between June and August, corresponding to the winter period (southern hemisphere), with the first visible annulus being formed when the fish are 1.5 years old. The length growth curve for P. brasiliensis females is described as: Lt = 20.0 (1 ? e?0.564×t), TL in centimeters and age in years. The undersize asymptotic length may be a result of excessive fishing mortality on the studied population.  相似文献

Abstract

Potential effects of anthropogenic activities on different boreholes around Thulamela Municipality, South Africa, were evaluated by quantifying the bacteria indicators and physicochemical parameters during summer, autumn, and winter. The purpose was to determine whether the borehole water in this region is safe for domestic use across the seasons. The concentrations of physicochemical (Temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity, and nitrate) and bacteriological (both Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis) contaminants in the borehole water samples were determined using standard microbiology methods. The mean concentration of NO3 for most of the boreholes failed to comply with the recommended guidelines throughout the season. High microbial load of E. coli (2.0?×?101 – 4.6?×?103 CFU/100?ml) and E. faecalis (2.0?×?10° – 6.0?×?102 CFU/100?ml) was recorded in the wet season than in the dry season (0.0 – 7.0?×?102 and 0.0 – 1.0?×?101 CFU/100?ml, respectively). Sanitary inspection and water source classification showed that most boreholes are prone to chemical contaminants during summer and autumn due to rainfall and this correlates with the measured microbial contamination. The result is significantly important because water from these boreholes is used for domestic purposes without treatment and could pose major public health risks to the consumers.  相似文献

Investigations on the biology of the red snapper Lutjanus analis (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1828) were made in three different areas along the Colombian Atlantic Coast. Egg counting was carried out on 16 females. The numbers of eggs were correlated with the length and the weight of the fish. The results are presented in graphs, average values and regression equations. To find the best mathematical relation between the fecundity, the length and the weight, linear and exponential equations were used. The best approximation to the relation between the number of eggs and the weight of the individuals was calculated by the parabola equation F = 20803 × G0.303, whereas the relation between the number of eggs and the length of the animals was most closely approached by the parabola equation F = 2922 × L1.1. Juvenile red snappers of a total length of 10 to 40 cm are very common in shallow-water grass beds. The adult fishes migrate to offshore reefs and into deeper waters. The sex ratio of the red snapper was about equal in all catches. The largest fishes we have found were males.  相似文献

Monthly samples of Abra ovata were collected during February 1983-January 1984 in the Evros Delta (N. Aegean Sea). Population density (mean annual value = 2407.5 ind · m−2) was characterized by seasonal variation. An analysis of the length frequency distributions shows that one annual recruitment of juveniles (> 2 mm) occurred in October-January; and also that, throughout the year, two age groups existed in the population. One growth ring was formed on the shells of the oldest age group during July-August. Mean growth in shell length can be described by Bertalanffy function. A positive correlation existed between shell length and decalcified dry weight. Secondary production in A. ovata, calculated by the instantaneous growth method, showed a mean biomass of 29.221 g dry weight m−2yr−1, a productivity of 17.086 g dry weight m−2yr−1 and an annual turnover ratio of 0.59.  相似文献

Randall’s threadfin bream, Nemipterus randalli, first recorded in Iskenderun Bay in Turkey in 2008, seems to have increased in the region. The species, widespread in the western Indian Ocean and with a rapid expansion, appears to have migrated to the bay via the Red Sea. Although its presence in the region has been published, there has been little or no information as to age and growth parameters of this Lessepsian migrant in its new habitat. The present study aims to determine the basic age and growth parameters of the species colonized in the region. A total of 379 collected individuals were studied from November 2007 to October 2008. Total specimen lengths ranged from 4.80 to 21.50 cm, and weights from 1.10 to 138.36 g. Maximum age was 3 years for both sexes. The length–weight relationship was described as W = 0.0011 × L3.061 (r2 = 0.982). The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L = 34.96 cm; K = 0.214 year?1; t0 = ?1.244 year for the entire population. These data were compared with results from studies made in other geographic areas.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the production of chitin and chitosan from both the exuvium and whole body of mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) larvae. Chitin from the exuvium and whole body of T. molitor larvae was chemically extracted with acid and alkali solutions to achieve demineralization (DM) and deproteinization (DP), respectively. The average DM (%) and DP (%) on a dry weight (DW) basis was 32.56 and 73.16% from larval exuvium, and 41.68 and 91.53% from whole body, respectively. To obtain chitosan, chitin particles from the exuvium and whole body of T. molitor larva were heated at various temperatures in different concentrations of NaOH. Average chitin yields were 18.01% and 4.92% of DW from the exuvium and whole body, respectively. The relative average yield of chitosan from whole body was 3.65% of DW. On average, over 90% of chitosan derived from whole body was deacetylated. The viscosity of chitosan from whole body was ranged from 48.0 cP to 54.0 cP. The chitin content of dry and wet byproducts from whole body were 17.32% and 16.94% respectively, compared to dry weight. The chitosan contents of byproducts on a DW basis were 14.48% in dry and 13.07% in wet byproduct. These results indicate that the exuvium and whole body of T. molitor larva may serve as a source of chitin and chitosan for use in domestic animal feed.  相似文献

This paper deals with the size, age, and sex structure of population and growth of the Japanese littleneck clam Ruditapes philippinarum in Amursky Bay (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan). One-year-olds and individuals with a shell length less than 19.8 mm were not found in the population under study. The population consisted mostly of 3-4-year-old clams (72.4%) with a shell length of 35–45 mm (67.8%). The maximum recorded age of R. philippinarum was 7 years, and maximum shell length was 52.7 mm. The male to female ratio was approximately 2: 1. Hermaphroditism (2.1%) and parasitic castration (1.4%) were observed. Linear growth rates of clams were found to increase until the age of three years old (11.6 ± 0.6 mm/year). Mollusks reach a commercial size of over 35 mm in shell length in the fourth year of life. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation describing group linear growth were L = 56.6 mm, k = 0.302 year?1, and t 0 = 0.468 year. The relationship between the shell length and the wet body weight is described by the equation W = 0.000253L2.954.  相似文献

Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) causing anthracnose is a potent pathogen of chilli resulting in significant yield loss. The in vitro root colonisation study showed an increase in root bacterial count by 10 × 105 colony forming units/cm root for Bacillus subtilis after 15 days of germination. Population level of the antagonist was stable in talc till the 180th day (30°C – 1.6 × 108; 4°C – 1.9 × 108) and in lignite till the 150th day (30°C – 1.5 × 108; 4°C – 1.3 × 108). Combined application of B. subtilis and carbendazim enhanced all biometric parameters with reduction in disease incidence. Soil, seed, root dip and foliar spray treatment significantly enhanced the growth parameters of chilli in B. subtilis inoculated treatments in comparison to the untreated control. Seed application resulted in highest plant fresh weight (76.84 g) and dry weight (34.17 g) compared to the untreated control (50 g and 21 g fresh and dry weight, respectively). Highest plant height ranging from 70 cm (soil application) to 77 cm (dip treatment) with Bacillus inoculation was comparable with carbendazim treatment (61 cm with soil application) and 78 cm (dip treatment) and significantly higher than the untreated control (58.2 cm with soil and 61 cm with application, respectively). Dip treatment resulted in significant increase in root length with B. subtilis (33 cm) and carbendazim (32.5 cm) in comparison to untreated control (15 cm). Co-inoculation of pathogen with B. subtilis (singly and with carbendazim) not only reduced the disease incidence but also improved all the biometric parameters in comparison to challenge inoculation. Root dip application was effective in promoting growth while seed application was effective in disease control.  相似文献

Age and growth estimates for sand tiger sharks, Carcharias taurus, in the western North Atlantic were derived from 96 vertebral centra collected from sharks ranging from 94 to 277 cm total length (TL), and compared to previously published age and growth data. The oldest female and male sand tiger sharks aged in this study were 17 and 15 years of age, respectively. von Bertalanffy growth parameters derived from vertebral length-at-age data are L = 295.8 cm TL, k = 0.11 year−1, and t 0 = −4.2 years for females, and L = 249.5 cm TL, k = 0.16 year−1, and t 0 = −3.4 years for males. Sexual maturity is estimated to be 9–10 years for females and 6–7 years for males. Weight-to-length relationships determined for female and male sand tiger sharks in the western North Atlantic are; W = 1.3 × 10−4 × L 2.4 (r 2 = 0.84, n = 55) and W = 9.0 × 10−5 × L 2.5 (r 2 = 0.84, n = 47), respectively, and 7.9 × 10−5 × L 2.5 (r 2 = 0.84) for the sexes combined. Our results show sand tigers possess a slower rate of growth than previously thought. This information is crucial for accurately assessing this population’s ability to recover, and further justifies the need for this species to be fully protected.  相似文献

Sporophytes of Ecklonia cava Kjellman (Laminariales, Phaeophyta) with a stipe length of 22–102 cm were collected at 6–9 m depth in Nabeta Bay, Shimoda, central Japan by scuba diving in February (winter) and in August (summer) 1998. Dark respiration of the intact stipe of E. cava was measured at various water temperatures ranging from 15 to 27.5°C in winter and 15–30°C in summer in a closed system by using a dissolved oxygen meter. The stipe respiration was compared on whole stipe, length, surface area, volume, wet weight and dry weight bases. On each basis, the stipe respiration always increased with a rise in water temperature within the temperature range investigated. The stipes showed similar respiration rates on each basis of length, surface area, volume, wet weight and dry weight at each temperature, irrespective of the stipe length. The mean respiration rates in winter (at 15–27.5°C) were: length, 16.7–32.5 μL O2 cm?1 h?1; surface area, 3.2–6.2 μL O2 cm?2 h?1; volume, 7.6–15.0 μL O2 cm?3 h?1; wet weight, 6.2–12.2 μL O2 g (wet weight)?1 h?1; and dry weight, 43.8–88.0 μL O2 g (dry weight)?1 h?1. Those for summer (at 15–30°C) were: length, 17.1–32.0 μL O2 cm?1 h?1; surface area, 3.6–6.8 μL O2 cm?2 h?1; volume, 9.7–18.7 μL O2 cm?3 h?1; wet weight, 7.6–14.6 μL O2 g (wet weight)?1 h?1; and dry weight, 49.4–95.8 μL O2 g (dry weight)?1 h?1. This is the first report of the intact stipe respiration of E. cava at various temperatures.  相似文献
